A new elution process has been developed for the recovery of gold thiosulfate from ion exchange resins. This is a synergistic system which utilises a base eluent, such as nitrate or trithionate, along with an additive that improves the elution of gold. The use of the additive enables lower eluent concentrations to be adopted, as well as weaker eluents such as chloride. With the chloride + additive system, complete gold elution can be achieved within 12 BV when utilising an eluent flow of 5 BV/h. When the eluent flow is reduced to 2 BV/h, complete elution is achieved within 8 BV. Similar results are obtained when using nitrate or trithionate as the base eluent. A copper pre-elution process has also been developed, whereby the majority of copper can be stripped within 5 BV prior to gold elution. This method is a significant improvement on the ammonia + oxygen pre-elution previously suggested. The development of a new analytical procedure based on ion chromatography with UV detection is also described for the quantification of polythionates in leach solutions and loaded on resins. This enables analysis to be carried out for resin-in- leach type processes where the polythionates are being formed in solution and simultaneously adsorbed onto the resin.

The capital cost of major items of mining equipment is very high. The operating cost of such equipment is also high. It is therefore important that such expensive equipment is used productively. To this end mine management uses production data systems and management accounting systems to monitor events and provide data for analysis to enable management to make operating and business optimisation decisions. This could be done better if there was an understanding of productivity in terms of its utilisation and efficiency components. What has been missing has been a methodology to properly account for the productivity of equipment in terms of its contribution in dollars to the costs and profit of the mine. An explanation of the Productivity Accounting methodology will be given. It will then be shown that productivity has two components, that of capacity utilisation and efficiency. These are defined and the dollar contribution of each to costs and profit shown. The efficiency component tracks the effect of proportional changes in input cost quantities used in the mining process as mining production changes. The capacity utilisation component tracks the effect of step changes in the input cost quantities used in the mining process as mining production changes.

Deep lead mining by methods other thanconventional open-cut techniques has not been effectively employed in Australia in -the second half of this century. The reasons for this are essentially economic, and are related particularly to the labour intensive nature of the methods involved as well as the high consumption of support materials. These methods have been adapted in recent times to undertake bulk sampling programmes in deep leads. Although some consideration is given to surface-oriented hydraulic and solution mining applications, the prime function of this paper is to investigate the possible application of modern underground methods to deep lead exploitation. As deep leads are not currently being worked (with the exception of some minor operations on the Eastern seaboard), these applications remain essentially untested. They have, however, been conceptually developed following several years of small scale deep lead development. Current mineral economics, particularly with respect to gold, combined with the known extent of partially - or totally - unexploited mineralised leads demonstrates the necessity to investigate all possible means of ore extraction.

Harmony Gold operates the Mount Marion underground gold mine near Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The mine consists of two ore zones, East and West, and mining of these zones is currently conducted using the sublevel caving method. When mining commenced in the Western zone, the span was insufficient to induce caving of the country rock above. Dyno Nobel, together with Harmony and 360 Drilling, developed an innovative drill and blast solution in order to promote cave propagation and improve the safety of personnel at the operation. The solution involved a series of shallow angle drill holes up to 90 m into the hanging wall of the West zone. These were charged with Titan« 7000 underground bulk emulsion and the HotShotÖ electronic initiation system. The blast used over seven tonnes of emulsion and 46 detonators and achieved the desired result without damaging nearby mine infrastructure.

Optimising a mining or a quarrying operation about the overall cost is quite a challenge as there never is a situation where we have exactly the same conditions regarding rock properties, explosives' performance, mining equipment or evironmental restrictions. The amount of endless influencing parameters and variables make the evaluation process difficult. The enormous progress we have seen during the recent two decades in computing has however significantly increased our ability to evaluate and process the information gathered, and refine our existing prediction models. Refined models demand an increasing volume of good quality information to show reliable conformity with reality. There is a great need for co-operative work in the mining and quarrying society if we shall be able to screen all available data, systematically find the key-parameters influencing the results and to build robust scientific models. No organisations today have all the skilled people needed or can afford to hire the necessary specialists in all the overlapping branches. This paper highlights some on-going work where the Dyno Explosives Group is adding some new pieces to the giant jigsaw puzzle representing the ultimate model of the mining and quarrying operations we all of this society would like to see completed.

FINANCE FOR EXPLORATION Two factors have basic importance in relation to the availability of finance: the apparent success of continuing exploration activity and tax concessions. It is not proposed to discuss the effect of existing tax incentives, as these have already been outlined and are generally accepted as being reasonably attractive; certainly not a deterrent to possible investors. However, it is obvious that the greater the tax incentives, the greater the amount of money that will be attracted, and the wider the number of people who can be brought into the pool. If, as is suggested, the chance of discovery is related to expenditure and effort, then the more money attracted, the better the prospects of significant finds. It is probably correct to assume that the largest expenditure in mining will come from, or be induced by, people expert in the field, people who are fully aware of the risks and benefits and perhaps making conservative decisions because of this awareness. Insofar as the general public is concerned, while in the first burst of enthusiasm it will frequently follow any promoter, in the long run it too will become more sophisticated and will strongly support only those promoters and companies of good repute and proven record.

There is a wide variety of industrial pastes or non-settling slurries pumped in mining, dredging and reclamation projects as products, refuse and tails. The types and/or names of some of the common ones are alumina red mud, phosphate clays, tar sands mature fine tails, tar sands (CT) consolidated clays and fly ash. The pipeline performance or friction of these varies dramatically with the type, its concentration and the particulars of the actual slurry making it difficult to select pumping equipment and to design associated pipelines. The GIW Hydraulic Laboratory in Grovetown Georgia has tested a number of these slurries over the last 30 years for various mining customers. Where available in the public domain and/or where permission has been obtained, the results of those tests are presented in this paper in a form usable for pipeline and pump system designers and users.

A common problem for many mines is insufficient total primary airflow or insufficient airflow in the correct places as the mine changes over its life. This has a number of impacts on the business operation and may result in the need for a major and unexpected capital upgrade of the system, cancellation of a planned production increase, reduction in production targets, increased operating costs, failure to provide contracted metals to customers or acceptance of substandard conditions in the workplace. In some cases, it can even result in premature closure of the mine. In recent times, higher metal prices have given an expected economic boost to many mines, potentially prolonging their life but simultaneously requiring the mine to develop to deeper depths or requiring assets such as shafts and fans to have their service life extended. Insufficient primary airflow is a particular problem in deeper mines as the ventilation circuits become longer, more convoluted, have higher shock losses and the actual airflow requirements increase due to a combination of leakage, dispersion of the workings and the problems of managing the additional heat loads due to higher virgin rock temperatures and autocompression. This paper discusses the reasons why mines experience unexpected shortfalls in primary ventilation capacity with its associated impacts on metal targets, profits and frequently on the health, safety and morale of the workforce, as well as its productivity.

Mining and metallurgy are more capital intensive than all other industry in Australia. Capital demands are met by domestic and foreign sources of finance for whom the major constraints are the supply of funds and factors of risk and uncertainty. in both mineral development and institutional financing policies, specific options are available to administrators which would allow mining to benefit from a more reliable supply of capital. The strength of major partners involved and overseas participation are important aspects of financing mineral developments. Future changes in financing for the mineral industry are considered most likely in variable interest rate funding, in the leasing of major plant items, and in the development of flexible techniques to ease the burden of infrastructure costs. In a consultancy sense, financiers are available to mining to assist with and to advise on optimal develop- ment of mineral industry projects.

The new South Australian Mining Act be came operative in July, 1972. It provides appropriate updated legislation covering pro- specting, exploration and development of mining properties. Anomalies inherent in earlier legislation which provided for the private ownership of minerals in certain areas have been overcome by the vesting of the property in. all minerals in the Crown. Appropriate transition- al and long term provisions protect the right of individuals thereby divested of their former property in minerals. In the matter of pro- specting for and quarrying of extractive minerals, the rights of landowners have been formally recognized, and the concept of rehab- ilitation of quarried areas has been introduced utilizing money provided from a royalty fund especially established for this purpose. Con- temporary company exploration practice is catered for under a new exploration tenement and at the same time the legislation makes provision for the interests of individual pro- spectors. Special provisions have been enacted to cope with the rapidly developing opal mining industry. A feature of the new Act is the introduction of legislation which recognizes enlightened contemporary thinking on the matter of environmental considerations. The gold industry has been revolutionized in the last decade by market forces and technological changes. The latter are discussed in this paper, with particular emphasis on carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and heap leaching. The nature and scope of the process development aspects of a gold project are considered, and factors which determine process decisions are outlined, including the choice of CIP versus carbon-in-leach (CIL), agitated leaching versus heap leaching and treatment of ores containing copper and silver. Likely directions for development of gold processing in general are discussed, and metallurgical process options for treatment of ores of platinum group metals (PGM) are outlined.Metallurgical process development for gold and platinum group metals proceeds through a number of well defined stages, with input from various disciplines and information sources. The orientation phase will include preparation of a general project overview; careful consideration of the issue of sampling and sample preparation; characterisation of the resource in terms of ore types, mineralogy, chemical composition; development of appropriate methodology; and development of an understanding of the potential metallurgical unit operations.The process definition phase will be-'directed to development and definition of a notional process flowsheet, and will include identification and appraisal of process options; development of, notional process flowsheets; testing of flowsheets against ore types; ranking of flowsheets; initial engineering, including preliminary mass balances, equipment selection and plant layout; and broad-brush economic appraisal.

Flue gases from electrical power station boilers, roasting, metallurgical and chemical plants could be treated by flotation using conventional flotation machines. The flue gases are introduced into the pulp instead of the air. The flotation media is a suspension of Ca(OH)2 or CaCO3 or a solution of NH4OH etc containing Na oleate as collector and frother. The SO2 and dust content of the initial flue gases were experimentally reduced by 100 to 1000 times in one flotation operation. The velocity of the flue gases through flotation machines could reach approximatively 0.4 to 0.5 m/s and more against 1.5 m/s reached in scrubber absorbers used for this purpose, but the quality of purification is expected to be better for flotation, which is essential for the cases of heavy polluted metallurgical and chemical flue gases. For some chemical plants the flue gases flotation media may be different and more suitable as compared to the above mentioned media. The proposed flotation method could be used for separation of dry grinded ores in the form of aerosols, with a realisation of flotation from a closed space (gas bubble in the pulp) onto the interface liquid-air where the particles are attached inside the bubbles.

Northeast of Brazil is situated in the polygon of drought. It covers some very important states like Bahia,Pernam- buco, Paraiba, Rio Grande do Norte, Cea- ra and Piaui , which have a potential for mineral production. Of them the main contributions that comes from Rio Grande do Nor to , Ceara and Paraiba are the scheelite and im portant quantities of granitic pegmatite mine- rals like tantalite-columbites, micas, beryls, precious stones, lithium minerals etc. On the other hand flourishing mineral economy in gold, tin, emeralds, chromium, lead, apatite is most- ly from Bahia; and potassium, salts, and petro- leum are from Sergipe, Alagoas and Bahia res; pectively. The most interesting aspect coninues to be the nucleus of the drought zone constituted of the Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba and Ceara sta- tes.The first two authors have worked for twel- ve years in the region and have dedicated atten tion and time to two systems, namely skarns and granitic pegmatites. Their mineralogy,petrogra- phy, geochemistry, origin and economy is being worked upon from time to time to accompany the progress that is being achieved both in the sec tors of geology and economy. Besides, during the field campaigns, evidences have been sought to find the best guide horizons for mineralisa- tion and options for the location of target areas and prospection methods for scheelite, tantalites and other pegmatite minerals.

The replacement of diphenylguanidine (DPG) for separating INCO Bessemer matte with a water soluble collector requires a frother since most collectors do not have frothing properties. The objective of this study was to identify a non persistent frother which produced a deep froth and collapsed rapidly, while maintaining acceptable metallurgical separation. Incremental rougher flotation tests failed to differentiate any metallurgical benefit through the use of a specific frother, so other tests were employed to identify the candidate frother. The equilibrium froth height and rate of froth collapse (froth stability) of several commercial frothers were evaluated as a function of frother concentration using a 'frothmeter' apparatus. Frothers evaluated were methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), Pine Oil, triethoxy butane, Dowfroth SA1263, Dowfroth 250C, Dowfroth 200 and Allied Colloids CRNI-1002. Dowfroth SA1263 produced the largest froth height, and TEB had the greatest rate of froth collapse. Frothers with properties similar to Dowfroth SA1263 and Dowfroth 250 were rejected due to their persistent froths. TEB was rejected because it has a low flash point and Pine Oil could be a nuisance to add to a flotation column. Therefore, the preferred frothers were declared to be Dowfroth 200 or Allied Colloids CRNl-1002.

The Australian industrial relations system is in a state of constant change. We are undergoing a transformation from a compulsory arbitration and an award based system to one which is fundamentally rooted in the concepts of enterprise bargaining. This is true both at the State and Federal level. The structural changes which facilitate the movement away from the predominance of Awards to enterprise agreements has been fostered by both sides of the political spectrum and is a cornerstone of their respective industrial relations platforms.In determining what form or combination of forms of industrial instrument(s) should apply to the individual enterprise, employers must have regard to the viability and sustainability of each form in the changing industrial climate. In particular employers should have regard to the needs and agendas of their employees and unions which may purport to represent Them.

This paper presents a case study to reduce the operational cost on the secondary ball mill circuit in the Lead/Zinc Concentrator at Mount Isa Mines. The circuit includes two five-metre diameter ball mills each closed with a cluster of ten 15-inch cyclones. The operating cost for both ball mills is about six million Australian dollars per annum.The concentrator achieves 75 per cent of the plant design capacity with one ball mill operating, but will have to use two ball mills when 100 per cent plant capacity is required. The optimisation study on the circuit identified a new flowsheet that enabled the concentrator to reach 100 per cent of the capacity by using one of the two secondary ball mills. The success of the project utilised the existing equipment rationally and saved the operational cost for one ball mill at full concentrator capacity. A further simplified secondary circuit is proposed using the IsaMill for the secondary grinding duty. Performance of the IsaMill circuit and the potential cost savings are predicted.

Experimental data on the production of fines as a function of specific grinding energy consumption show that in general the energy utilisation in a choke fed high-pressure roll mill is higher than in a ball mill, but lower than in the single-particle mode of comminution under slow compressive loading. There is some evidence to suggest that the presence of water in feeds improves the energy efficiency of pressurised roll milling somewhat. Within a wide range of energy input, the size distributions of the ground product are self-similar, the logarithmic median size decreases linearly with the amount of fines produced and the inverse of the median size increases linearly with the energy spent. The production of fines as a function of energy expended follows essentially the same pattern as the one frequently encountered in media mills. The kinetics of grinding in the high-pressure roll mill can be simulated satisfactorily by modifying the standard particle population balance equation in order to account for energy dissipation in the tightly compressed bed. Common characteristics and important differences in grinding by the media mill and the high-pressure roll mill are highlighted.

Modern technology and the need for published results have created the tendency for exploration to concentrate on drilling and assaying rather than building a broader geological understanding. Though grade is vitally important to a resource estimate, density and volume are also very important aspects that require equal consideration. Wet tropical nickel laterites are developed in humid environments over ultramafic bedrock where the nickel and cobalt are enriched to economic levels by weathering, leaching and supergene processes. These laterites often occur over rugged terrain at higher elevations where there is sufficient rain and stability for the long lateritisation process to occur. For nickel laterite profiles, the variable terrain and significant material type changes within the relatively thin profile make density and particularly volume estimation, just as significant as grade in resource estimation and assessment of resource risk. Drilling alone is generally not a cost-effective way to reduce the risk in laterite volume estimation to acceptable levels. Surface geological mapping, high resolution topographic data and other information such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) can be used very effectively to improve volume estimates. These data types are all differently structured, have different data density and quality and may potentially overlap. Integration of these disparate data types provide the most cost-effective approach to modelling wet tropical nickel laterite volumes and minimising risk. The search for economic mineral deposits is becoming more difficult as exploration goes deeper in the established mining camps and spread out to the surrounding covered areas, which may have an `overburden' some hundreds of metres thick. Geophysics is finding an ever increasing role in such exploration. When the target is zinc, the task often becomes even more difficult since sphalerite, the most commonly mined mineral, is non-magnetic, resistive, and relatively light compared to other sulphides. Fortunately, sphalerite commonly occurs in association with other sulphides, which are magnetic and/or conductive and/or heavy, thus most zinc-rich orebodies have at least one contrasting physical property to aid exploration. This paper presents the physical properties of sphalerite and other potentially important zinc minerals. Results of petrophysical measurements of samples from various zinc-rich ores are presented together with examples of geophysical surveys over a number of zinc deposits. The results show that the physical properties are not merely dependent upon the properties of the orebodies' constituent minerals. For example, the small (0.4 Mt) and low-grade (five per cent Zn + three per cent Pb + two per cent other sulphides) Flying Doctor deposit at Broken Hill, New South Wales (NSW) is much more conductive than the large (3+ Mt) and high grade (14 per cent Zn + five per cent Pb) Cadjebut deposit in Western Australia (WA). Ranger Uranium Mines Pty. Ltd. operates an open pit mine and ore treatment plant in the Northern Territory designed to produce 3 000 tonne/yr of U308 in yellowcake from 3 500 tonne/day of mill feed. The construction of this project was completed in 1981, 12 years after the discovery of the orebody. Wright-Davy, a Joint Venture of Wright Engineers and Davy McKee Pacific, were the Project Managers and Designers of the $270 million ore treatment plant and associated infrastructure. The project was designed in Sydney in -an office integrated with the Client, staffed by 35 key personnel drawn from Wright Engineers and Davy McKee, supplemented by personnel hired for the project. The peak Wright-Davy workforce in Sydney of 200 contained 113 design staff. The design principle of using the best practicable proven technology resulted in a plant which easily produces its design output using ore types outside the design criteria. The structuring of the project systems and industrial relations policies contributed to construction being completed within time and under budget. The plant was built without any major industrial dispute occurring and no dispute arose due to the uranium issue.
