The continuously growing coal mining industry of India presently includes shovel dumper combinations in open cast mines, sometimes with dragline mining of overburden, together with the whole range of longwall and bord and pillar underground mining, continuously undergoing fuller mechanisation. This transition from "low tech" to "high tech" systems is now monitored for reliability and provides bases for comparisons of downtime relative to age and make of equipment, whether imported or indigenous, including spare parts, as well as frequencies of particular failures to allow analysis and progressive improvement. Varying geologies complicate technology and equipment requirements, especially in underground mine,s with minimal technological standardisation, but now, reliability in South Eastern Coalfields Limited has been given more importance and superior technological back-up is being developed.

Wheal Gawler was Australia's first metal mine. This leader was followed by an army of other metalliferous underground mines and surface operations in Australia. As a mine it was not highly significant economically because its small total production of nearly pure galena had low multiplier effects on the economy of South Aus- tralia. Its importance lay in its symbolism: here was a silver-lead mine close to the new town of Adelaide posing the question of what other min- erals lay in the Mount Lofty ranges and in the fields beyond.

The Company's main current activities are the exploration and evaluation of the Pajingo Gold Property situated some 50 kilometres south-east of Charters Towers and in the northern Drummond Basin.The discovery of the Pajingo gold mineralisation by the Company was the indirect result of a regional program established to evaluate Carboniferous age volcanic plugs in north Queensland for gold mineralisation.

The flotation properties of acetic acids modified by xanthic and dithiocarbamic fragment in regards to copper and ferrous minerals and their noble metal containing ores have been investigated. The effectiveness of the co-using of these reagents with xanthates and dithiocarbamates has been shown, ie using of proposed reagent regimes for the flotation of Au-containing ores increases gold recovery by 4.2 - 4.7 per cent, and in the case of flotation of copper Re-containing ores copper recovery increases by 3.3 per cent, rhenium recovery - by 15.5 per cent. The mechanism of the action of these reagents has been explained by the data of UV and ESR-investigations of their sorption on mineral surface. The information on structure and properties of co-ordination compounds of some metals with (Diethyldithiocarbamato) acetic acid were used also for the explanation of flotation mechanism.

The modern jig with a state-of-the-art control system is much more effective than its older version. This improved control system is used to modulate the amplitude and the frequency of the jig cycle. These two prime parameters are optimised with respect to feed characteristics for best jigging performance. Based on this understanding any jigging plant can be optimised. In addition to these established facts present study shows process efficiency improves further through optimisation of the feed quality.

A discussion of the necessity for oil property valuation isgiven. A brief 'discussion of the four most common methods is included and the engineering method is explained in more detail. As an example of oil property valuations, a producing oil lease in Shackelford County, Texas, USA is evaluated.' The total systems model for underground oal mining planning and design is a set of omputer programs which encompasses a realis- ic reproduction of the interaction between he geological, environmental, equipment, meth- ds and the health and safety aspects of the ining plan. The total system includes nine ajor subsystems - Geology and Reserves, Meth- ne Generator, Roof Support, Subsidence, Pro- uction, Rail Haulage, Cost, Water Generator, nd Ventilation. The subsystems themselves re divided into two categories based on the requency with which they are executed. Event riented Subsystems are executed either inde- endently, or at discrete intervals when cer- tain specific events occur. Dynamic subsystems 'unction interactively during the production :ycle. They transfer data to or request data `rom event oriented subsystems only when spe- ific events occur. Three specific areas for iodel application are in the measurement of system performance, the development of the '_ nterrelationships of the components of deep Wining process and the evaluation of new and Lnnovative mining technology.

Natural gas is a comparatively new fuel in Australia. It was first used in small quantities in Queensland in 1965, but it was not until 1969 that natural gas reached the capital cities Brisbane, Melbourne, and Adelaide in that order; then in 1971 it reached Perth. By the mid seventies, natural gas had secured a significant proportion of the energy markets in Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia and in 1976 supply commenced in Sydney. In that year - 1976 - gas supplied about 12.5% of the total demand for primary energy in Australia excluding transport. In the current financial year - 1981/82 - natural gas is expected to supply nearly 19% of the market and forecasts for 1990 range up to 25%. From a starting point in the late 1960's when manufactured gas supplied a small but important proportion of the non-transport energy market - less than 3% - we have exper- ienced an average growth of nearly 24% per annum up to the present time.

The impact of non-ferrous smelters on their local surroundings is well monitored and guarded by various actors: the owners looking for profitability, the villagers looking for employment, the consumers asking for ever cheaper products and services, the government collecting taxes and all cherishing the environmental impact. Recent challenges facing the industry are various new doomsday projections: that we will be running out of base metals, that the ground we dwell on will be contaminated by the use of products. Smelters, such as BolidenÆs R÷nnskSr Smelter have a long history of increasing non-ferrous resources by recycling. It is shown that extraction and recycling of metals together with energy recovery can be integrated in a modern, profitable and clean smelter. Examples of efforts to further improve the business will be discussed such as flowsheet rationalisation, environmental investments, new feed from recycling and energy utilisation.

Operations at two open cut mines have so far commenced on two out of the five potentially mineable seams in the Fair Hill - German Creek Coal Measures. Due to seam splitting, up to seven mining units are present in the Dysart Seam interval at Peak Downs giving a total of 12 mining units in the section. The coal is low to medium volatile type and produces strong coke. Rank increases and fluidity decreases in the southern part of the area.

Argyle Diamond Mines Pty. Limited (ADM), manager and operator of the Argyle Diamond Mines Joint Venture (ADMJV) will recruit approximately 400 employees during 1985 to operate the new large-scale, open-cut diamond mine and treatment plant being developed at Argyle, in the East Kimberley Region of Western Australia. These employees will live in Perth or environs and will commute to work at Argyle via chartered jet aircraft. On site, they will be accommodated in self-contained single person's quarters, with central messing and recreational facilities. Rostering systems have not been finalised, but it is likely employees will rotate through a cycle of 14 days at site and seven-days on leave in Perth. ADM spent three years evaluating residen- tial options before deciding to commute its workforce from Perth. Another 70 senior staff will reside in Kununurra (the nearest established town, 250 km from Argyle) and commute to the mine daily by air.

The Sons of Gwalia Mine in Western Australia is situated about 140 miles north from Kalgoorlie in arid country, where supplies of fresh water are difficult to obtain.Mine salt water is used throughout the treatment plant, whilst fresh water for domestic, boiler, and power purposes is pumped from a number of shallow outlying wells. The waters from all wells are constant in character, although they vary in the quantities of salts contained.An average sample of mixed waters gave the following analysis (Gr. per gal.):Sodium chloride 70.82Magnesium chloride 33.03Calcium chloride 26.98Calcium carbonate .. 11.57Calcium sulphate 22.71Iron oxide and alumina 2.10Silica and insoluble 4.58When this water is used in the boilers in its natural state it is scale-forming and intensely corrosive.

The behaviour of cationic and anionic collector mixtures in the feldspar-quartz flotation system has been investigated througl conductivity, surface tension, zeta-potential and flotation studies. Tht results show the formation of molecular complexes between oppositel; charged collector ions through charge neutralisation. The molecular complexes are found to have a higher surface activity than the individua components. The mole ratio of the mixed composition is found to have, significant effect on flotation. Control of silicon in produced through the submerged-arc furnace can result in reduced power and coke consumption in addition to improving the quality of the hot metal. A thermo-chemical analysis of the production of ferro-chromium was carried out to devise strategies to control the recovery of silicon during the manufacture of ferro-chromium. The presence of three thermochemical zones in the furnace with respect to the reduction of silica was recognised from this analysis. Any strategy for the control of silicon recovery has to take cognizance of these thermochemical zones. The effect of various strategies on the silicon level in the hot metal have been evaluated. Possible strategies, such as the reduction of coke level in the charge; the replacement of quartz; pre-reduction of the ore and the control of the temperature profile are discussed in this paper.

Separation in magnetic fluids is one of the modern techniques that offer a unique approach to material manipulation in a broad spectrum of industries. Its wide-scale application has been restricted so far for a variety of reasons, including limited throughput, inefficient recovery of magnetic fluids and the cost of commercially available magnetic fluids. This situation has changed recently. Very selective separators, with automated density control, capable of treating a variety of materials in a wide spectrum of densities and particle sizes have been built by DebTech and applied in the diamond industry. Technology for the recovery of magnetic fluids has been developed and low-cost magnetic fluids, with high magnetisation and low viscosity are being produced on a production scale. Scale-up of the technology has been addressed and units capable of treating large tonnages of material have been designed. Such a development thus offers the minerals industry a technology that surpasses the existing technologies in selectivity, efficiency and versatility

This paper is concerned with the application of a probabilistic approach to the risk assessment of mining projects.In current practice, sensitivity analysis is the most commonly used deterministic approach of accounting for the uncertainties involved in mining project evaluation, while Monte Carlo simulation is considered to be the best probabilistic method available for the same purpose. The methodology of the approach proposed in this paper is as simple as that of sensitivity analysis. However, the results obtained can be more comprehensive than those obtained from Monte Carlo simulation. Various important statistical features, such as correlation and skewness, of the basic random parameters can be easily taken into account by the proposed approach. Example studies are demonstrated. Lotus 123 was employed for the associated probabilistic calculations.

Fluidised Bed Combustion technology has expanded since the first fluidised bed boiler steamed in 1974 with 58 companies currently supplying units. In Australia the market has been in small boilers and the goal of a limited attendance coal fired boiler has been achieved. On the world scene, the major incentive for development has been emission control with sulphur capture and low NOX. The potential of significant reduction in plant size is encouraging development of pressurised fluidised bed combustion.

Refractory application in the major iron and steelmaking units are discussed. Mechanis- ms of refractory consumption as revealed by pre- vious studies are reviewed and current practice is evaluated. Deficiencies in refractories now in use are noted and some lines of development are indicated. The iron and steelmaking units discussed are generally restricted to those subject to slagging, structural change or erosion at steel or iron making temperatures, and include the Blast Furnace, Hot Blast Stoves, Hot Metal Ladles, Basic Oxygen Furnaces, Continuous Cast- ing Units and Steel Teeming Ladles.

The thermodynamically-based pyrometallurgical simulation software STEPSOL (Version 3.0) provides for the modelling of activities using the Interaction Parameter Model, the Regular Solution Model, the Sub-Regular Three Suffix Margules Model, the Sub-Regular Four Suffix Margules Model and various simpler polynomial models. These are briefly reviewed, along with the major sources of data available in the literature, and the implementation of the models in the program.
