THE irregularity of the Mount Morgan ore body presents problems other than those for mining only. For irregularity of outline is coupled with irregularity of grade, and the ore varies so rapidly from profitable to non-profitable, and from highly siliceous to highly pyritic, that the task of estimating quantities and values of ore reserves is manifestly rendered a difficult one, while the actual disposal Of the broken ore demands constant supervision.Four classes of ore are handled. The oxidized ore, cheaply mined and cheaply treated, is obtained by quarrying from the top of the mountain. Below the 315-ft. mine level (measured from the original summit) sulphide ore comes in, and this is divided into siliceous sulphide ore (too siliceous for economic smelting), sulphide ore suitable for smelting, and ore too poor either to be smelted or to be treated by wet process with the siliceous ore. Well planned and executed environmental management plans can reduce life-of-mine operating costs and the need to deal with major environmental issues at the time of mine closure. With proper planning during the exploration, feasibility and execution phases of a project, final closure costs can be reduced. The reduction of closure costs should be considered during exploration and initial feasibility studies and when process facilities, waste rock dumps and tailings impoundments are designed. During the mining of the resource, closure cost reduction will depend on effective and efficient environmental management plans for ongoing land clearance, segregation of mine waste materials, management of mine site water and workshop wastewaters, and the establishment of progressive rehabilitation strategies. These issues are the responsibility of planning, production, technical support and maintenance personnel at an operating site. The successful implementation of environmental plans will ensure that all impacts are reduced and that closure issues with major cost implications are addressed prior to closure of the mine.

Sinter has been used as part of the metallic charge in large-scale blast furnaces for many years with the well-known benefits in terms of productivity and fuel consumption. However, because of the high investment in a conventional sinter plant, small blast furnaces and the associated integrated mini steel plants have not taken the advantages of using sinter. Recently KTS Korf Tecnologia Siderurgica, a division of Mannesmann Demag Ltda in Brazil, has developed a mini sinter plant for which the investment is compatible with small blast furnaces. Consequently, it is of great interest to evaluate the economical impact of using sinter in such small-scale integrated steel plants. In order to compare two alternatives, ie 100 per cent ore and 70 per cent sinter in the blast furnace burden, mass and heat balances for the entire operation from sinter plant through the blast furnace and EOF-based melting shop, were performed to evaluate the final production cost of the liquid steel. It was found that, depending on the sinter feed price, substantial savings can be obtained with the use of sinter.

A summary of a proposal to develop a 20 000 tpa underground gold operation in a Forest Park. The environmental constraints are severe and affected the mine development planning and choice of mining method. The mine will use trackless methods to access the narrow 1.5 m ore shoots, and to mine ore by cut and fill methods. The use of Microscoop and CT 1700 HE electric LHDs for mucking, together with special drilling attachments for drilling, is central to efficiency and small Kubota diesel haulers will be used for carrying ore to surface.

The following paper describes the refining practice for the production of lead, silver and gold at the works of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd., Port Pirie, South Australia.The refinery is situated on the wharf frontage and is built parallel with it. The refinery occupies an area of approximately 3380 square yards. (Fig. 8)There are two buildings, one containing the softening and de-silverising sections, measuring 225 ft. x 57t ft., while the other building, which measures 225 ft. x 90 ft. covers the de-zincing, lead moulding, retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections. (Fig. 1)The retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections are completely isolated from the rest of the plant by strong small-mesh wire gratings welded to steel uprights. The dore parting plant and generator room are further isolated by a brick wall, built up to the roof. The two main buildings are steel structures, with outer walls and roof of "Robertson" corrugated sheeting; the side and end walls are open for some distance above the ground, and this, coupled with the high roof which is 50 ft. from ground level, ensures the free access of air and light. Conditions are such that operators work in a clear atmosphere.

"Compared with conventional roasting and magnetic separation processes, higher reduction temperatures and stronger reducing atmospheres are used in reduction technologies to reduce iron oxides to metallic iron, which is often liberated during reduction and amenable to magnetic separation. Reduction and magnetic separation of an Australian refractory iron ore was therefore studied as a function of reduction temperature, time and coal addition. It was found that during reduction, the particle size of the reduced iron increased with reduction temperature and time. Subsequent magnetic separation tests were further conducted on the reduction products. A reduced iron powder with a Fe grade of 85.67 per cent was obtained at a Fe recovery of 87.82 per cent under optimum reduction conditions where a metallisation rate of 85.82 per cent was achieved. In preparing a paper such as this it was thought that the Newstan Colliery Company Ltd., being comparatively new, would need some introduction to mining people in general.The Newstan Company was formed by the Joint Coal Board in December, 1948 during a period of acute coal shortages. The Company took over the holdings of what were known as the Olstan and Northumberland Collieries, situated at Fassifern, alongside Lake Macquarie and adjacent to the Great Northern Railway, within easy rail access of Sydney and Newcastle, as shown on the locality plan (Fig. 1).The Company was developed in order to produce steaming coal for the power house trade and has continued its activities in the steaming coal trade since its inception. The Olstan and Northumberland collieries were together producing some 300 tons per day when the Company was formed, and it was from this foundation that the colliery was built. The planned development of the Company has been along the lines of producing coal by modern, highly mechanised methods, together with the preparation of theproduct for the consumer, to the highest degree possible consistent with up to date methods.In the comparatively short time of 5t years the mine has developed from a small hand-won coal unit to a high capacity modern mine, one of Australia's largest producers, with an output capacity as high as 3,000 tons per shift.

Cobalt/tungsten mineralization at Mt. Cobalt, located 170 km southeast of Mt. Isa in northwestern Queensland, is described. Mineralization occurs in the Kuridala Formation of the Mary Kathleen Group, which is composed dominantly of pelitic schists, carbonates and acid and basic volcanics.Rocks in the region are metamorphosed to amphibolite facies and affected by two generations of tight to isoclinal folds and a third, more open generation of folds. The region is divided into three meridionally trending belts on the basis of structural style, with mineralization concentrated in the central, more highly strained belt.Deformation and metamorphism is probably younger than 1670 m.a., and the rocks are intruded by granitic rocks dated at 1509 ± 22 m.a.Mineralization occurs in shear zones at the contact between an amphibolite and enclosing pelitic schists, and within the amphibolite itself. Mineralization consists of cobaltite and scheelite with lesser chalcopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, i1menite, allanite, xenotime and apatite. The mineralizing event involved addition of K, Cl, CO2 W, As, Cu, Ni, Au and rare earths and depletion of Ca and Na. It altered a hornblendeandesine/labradorite host assemblage to a biotiteoligoclase/andesine-scapolite assemblage. Though tourmalinealteration also occurs, it is probably not related to mineralization.It is concluded that the mineralization and alteration assemblages formed by reaction of saline fluids with amphibolite close to the peak of amphibolite facies metamorphism.The fluids are probably metamorphically derived, and their movement was channelled through high strain zones in the sequence. The material carried by the fluids was derived from the metasedimentary/metavolcanic pile as a whole.Other deposits in the Mt. Cobalt-Selwyn area have characteristics comparable with Mt. Cobalt, and the mechanism for the genesis of Mt. Cobalt may have applications at other areas in the region.

OWING to two large falls of ground which resulted in serious accidents occurring towards the end of 1908, it became evident that the "open chamber" system then in use was unsuitable for the conditions existing in the Mount lVIorgan mine. It will be admitted that in all mining operation, the first consideration is the economy of the system adopted, combined with its safety and ability to give the desired output. A sectional system with square sets has been introduced into the mine, in which due attention has been paid to these factors. In this paper a brief description of this system will be given. An outline of those previously used will be ineluded, as it is necessary to understand the eonditions which existed in the mine at the initiation of the sectional system. Outside the actual mining methods employed, various points that might prove of interest will be touched on.The square set system of mining has been in use throughout the stopes in the gold ore in the upper levels of the mine since underground operations were started in Mount Morgan.

Past successes of low impact mineral exploration and rehabilitation of mined areas in developed land of subdued contour provide little guidance for similar activity in more sensitive high country or mountain environments. Land management agencies and environmental pressure groups have expressed considerable concern about mineral development in these areas by land especially where the land involved has high environmental or productive values. Mineral explorers are responding with detailed proposals for integration of environmental assessment and mineral exploration at an early stage. A model programme for Fiordland National Park presented in this paper illustrates this approach.

In the plumbing of vertical shafts the methods employed and equipment used, are generally made to best suit existing conditions. Undoubtedly, there is no method that can be called standard or that can be used with equal ease and success on all shafts. At the Mount Isa Mines Limited property in Northern Queensland, Australia, local conditions have presented no major difficulties to be overcome in shaft plumbing work. In fact, compared to those at many shafts, the problem has been rather simple. There are three vertical shafts connecting main mine workings, with the greatest plumbing depth for any single lift, 350 ft.Other conditions pertaining to plumbing work have been generally normal.The method we have employed is, in principle, similar to the Weisbach orientation method with a variation that does not necessitate damping of the wires to bring them to rest. Although conditions encountered have not been such that damping the wires would have been inconvenient, we feel we have saved much time and eliminated unnecessary...

The Coal Mining Engineering Branch of the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Mineral Resources, in its continuing effort to improve coal recovery from underground coal mining operations, has undertaken a study of the mechanics of sub-surface deformation caused by caving of the extracted area behind retreating longwall faces. The strata movement was monitored by a multi-wire borehole instrumentation system consisting of mechanical anchors installed at different horizons in a borehole extending from the surface to the coal seam. The mechanical anchors were connected to the suspended weights on the surface by stainless steel multi-strand wires. The movement of these weights was monitored as the longwall face approached and retreated past the borehole. The anchors started subsiding as soon as the face retreated past the borehole and continued to subside until the subsidence levelled off when the face retreated 900 m past the borehole. The zone of major caving and bed separation extended to roughly 10 to 13 times the extracted seam thickness and high tensile strains developed inthis zone. The bulking factor of broken strata was less than 1.14 which indicated that the roof layers collapsed in big blocks. The goaf compaction was almost complete when the face retreat was 200 m. Low tensile strains prevailed in the strata overlying the zone of caving and bed separation.

The paper is a general review of practice in design of sub-level open stopes in Northern Rhodesian copper mines and gives examples of some interesting developments during the last five or six years. It discusses the effect of hangingwall subsidence and the methods used to combat rock pressure on working areas.INTRODUCTIONAll producing mines on the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt have large ore reserves and are designed for high rates of production. The three mines (Mufulira, Rhokana Corporation, and Roan Antelope) where sub-level open stoping is used, hoist from 250,000 to over 400,000 short tons of ore a month so that any stoping method used must be adaptable to concentrated' mining. Conservation and environmental issues are raising their profile with respect to both demand restraint and electricity supply options. In New Zealand, conservation pressures and energy efficiency need to be seen in relation to the supply system currently in place which has capacity for economic supply of electricity in quantities substantially in excess of the current market. Consequently, energy efficiency and conservation need to be interpreted in relation to the supply system as well as in relation to end use. The relationship between the environment and conservation is strongest when new generation is required. New Zealand's electricity supply system consists of a large proportion of hydro production and this has significant environmental benefits when considered in relation to concerns of global wanning and the greenhouse effect. However, environmental trade-offs in supply options need to take account of both the efficiency of electricity end use, the trade-off between hydro and thermal generation and the inter-regional effects of shifting development options from one region to another. The Electricity Corporation has a high level of consciousness with respect to environmental and conservation issues and this paper demonstrates its own moves to maximise energy efficiency and illustrate the environmental trade-offs for supply.

This paper presents the art of on-stream particle size and elemental analysis used at iron ore concentrators, followed by the results and experiences from several sites.Online particle size analysis is rather common at medium- to large-sized concentrators. Online X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis, however, is only used in some iron ore concentrators, while it is a routine practice in base metal concentrator plants. Online XRF analysis is applicable for process monitoring and control down to four to five per cent silica by measuring Fe assays accurately. With lower silica content, direct measurement of silica and other light elements is required. Some light element analysers that are based on the prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) method have been developed, but they have not performed up to expectations with slurry analysis. Other methods have been tried though these have not been used beyond prototype installations. Operating online light element slurry analyser installations are not common in iron ore applications.There is an economic incentive to mine lower and variable grade iron ore resources, which require concentration and removal of several impurities to produce high-quality concentrates for pellet production. Monitoring such operations by on-stream analysis has significant economic benefits, and there is a need to develop a dependable slurry online analyser for Si, Al, Mg and other light elements. Cross-belt samplers are designed to sample particulate material in processing plants, usually when there is no space to install a conventional linear falling stream sampler. Most of the available cross-belt samplers are mounted on the top of conveyor belts, and remove each increment from a loaded moving conveyor with a 360° rotation of an open faced cutter, in a plane perpendicular to the material flow. Despite the practicality of this equipment and the fact that it occupies very little space in the plant, cross-belt samplers are well known for collecting biased samples, especially due to the increment extraction error. Sampling consultants around the world tend to condemn this sampling equipment, claiming that it is incapable of collecting the fine material from the bottom part of the load, and, since the sampling probability is not uniform for all fragments and depends on its position in the stream, this kind of sampler generates biased samples and its use should be avoided. Furthermore, the greater the segregation effect between particles, the larger the bias. However, some plants, whose initial design did not plan for the installation of a falling stream sampler, must rely on cross-belt samples for process control and reconciliation. For the past years, sampling equipment manufacturers have been putting effort in modifying the cross-belt sampler design in order to comply with the principles of correct sampling. Changes to the cutter material, shape, position, speed and movement in relation to the material flow have been made, and are continually being tested for different types of ore with various chemical and physical characteristics. New Zealand Steel Mining Limited operates two independent sand mining operations on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Waikato North Head 30 km south of Auckland supplies ironsand concentrate as the raw feed for New Zealand Steel's works at Glenbrook and Taharoa 70 km further south, exports ironsand concentrate to Japan.   Taharoa uses two sets of six low pressure Warman centrifugal pumps in series to load bulk ore carriers 3 km off shore through two underwater pipelines. Waikato North Head delivers the ironsand to Glenbrook 18 km through a 200 mm ID buried pipeline using two stages of high pressure positive displacement (HPPD) pumping.   A high level of operating and maintenance expertise has been developed since commissioning the two systems which are proving to be reliable, efficient and of minimal impact environmentally.

Up to the end of World War n, flat-back cut and fill stoping with or without square sets was the universal method of ore extraction. Rapid changes in practice occurred during the post-war years; first, ore extraction was fully mechanized; secondly, the stope design for new levels, notably No. 17 Level Zinc Corporation Ltd. and No. 19 Level New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd., was modified to suit this mechanization; and thirdly, sub-level and shrinkage stopes were developed in orebodies where cut and fill methods would be uneconomical. The following is a brief survey of the changes that have occurred-most of which were inaugurated during the last five years.ROCK DRILLINGDuring 1951 open stoping was investigated in detail. In order to reduce steel handling problems, forged steel onepass detachable bits were introduced, but were soon superseded by the "Swedish method". Investigation showed that when using a bar and arm mounted 3-in. drifter the overall drilling time was approximately 6 min. per ft. compared with 4 min. per ft. using the light jackhammer-airleg combination with 1-in. hex. by 4-in. collared shank tungsten carbide-tipped steel.Although competitive with tipped steels on a cost per foot drilled basis (excluding miner's time), detachable steel bits proved most unsatisfactory for hard drilling conditions.Rapid blunting necessitated frequent bit changes and thus caused lost drilling time. IN previous discussions on the occurrence of gold in the Bendigo quartz reefs the opinion has been put forward that the gold shoots are primary concentrations in the quartz reefs during the period of vein-formation. The view has been based upon the constant features of the gold shoots in a large number of individual reefs, independent of their depth below the surface. These features include the mineral associations accompanying the gold, the appearance and association of the gold in the quartz, the similarity in all respects (excepting mineral content) between richly gold-bearing quartz and poor quartz, and the variations in mineral content in the reef apart from gold. The view has been supported by a relation of the gold shoots to faults, together with the dependence of the reefs on the existence of pre-mineral faulting. The secondary deposition of gold has only been observed in a few instances .associated with the younger monchiquite dykes, and is of no economic importance.
