The Vanderbijl Park sinter plant in South Africa was investigated to determine the reason for the production of very fine sinter not acceptable as feedstock for the blast furnace. A procedure was designed to generate representative samples and to prepare the samples for chemical and mineralogical analyses. Results from a mineral analyser showed that the samples are extremely heterogeneous and therefore the sampling and sample preparation methods had to be tested in order to produce representative samples. The high production capacity at the sinter plant could also give rise to sampling errors. The method designed involved sampling of the conveyor belt at the sinter plant every four hours for the duration of three days. The samples were then milled and split into smaller sections appropriate for analysis. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and X-Ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses were conducted on the samples. The results showed a standard deviation of less then one per cent, which indicates that the samples were representative and that the method used was therefore adequate. Systematic differences in the phase proportions between normal and fine sinter samples were detected, with the fine sinter containing more haematite than the normal sinter. The sampling method employed gives added confidence that the differences are real.

Carbonate replacement tin deposits in the areas studiedhere are genetically related to biotite granites. Biotite in the granites is distinguished by distinctive compositional features. High MgO content is found in biotite in the Renison Bell granite; high MnO and A1203 contents in the Gejiu granite; and high FeO content in the Xinlu granite. The compositional features of biotite in the granites are reflected in skarn minerals formed around the granites.Granites associated with these tin deposits are characterized by different accessory minerals. Magnetite-bearing granite in the Xinlu deposit is related to the andraditic garnet (andradite 40-45 mole%)-hedenbergite skarn, with tin mineralization occurring in the contact skarn only. The sphene-bearing granite in the Gejiu deposit is related to the grossular garnet (grossular 50-60 mole%, almandine 20-30 mole%) -salite skarn, with tin mineralization occurring in the contact skarn, as well as stratabound replacement orebodies in the distal skarn. The ilmenite-bearing granite in the Dachang deposit and the Renison Bell deposit is related to the grossular-diopside skam, with tin mineralization occurring 500-1500 metres vertically and 1.5-3 km horizontally away from the granite contact.

Plant data are presented which indicate a relationship between flotation rate constants and pulp density in zinc cleaning circuits at Broken Hill. The data were obtained from down the bank sampling of cleaner and recleaner banks at North Broken Hill and New Broken Hill Consolidated Concentrators. It was found that, under normal plant operation, flotation rate constants increased at the lower pulp densities existing in the later cells of cleaner banks. The addition of dilution water to the feed to the bank increased flotation rate constants, thereby confirming the relationship. It is shown that the relationship between flotation rate constant and pulp density is size dependent, being most pronounced for larger sized particles. In contrast, the effect is not markedly dependent upon mineral type. Possible consequences of this relationship for control of cleaner operation are discussed with the aid of some simulated results.

Over the last few years several important developments have taken place in the Electro- lyte Purification Plant at Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd. A fully automated system for the continuous removal of arsenic has been develop- ed. A submerged combustion process for the removal of nickel has been developed to a stage where patent coverage has been obtained in most of the copper producing countries. A plant has recently been commissioned for the production of Tetra Cupric Arsenate, which it is hoped will find a ready market in the timber preservation industry.

Pulverised coal firing was pioneered in the cement industry prior to the turn of the century. Ash from the coal is absorbed into the mix in the kiln and replaces secondary materials. With high purity limestone coal with high ash content can be used. Fuel cost is a major part of the total manufacturing cost. Cement plants are thus quick to respond to fuel price changes and will use low grade fuels if there is a price advantage. Combustion conditions in a cement kiln differ markedly from a boiler. Flame length is determined by air/fuel mixing but because of fixed secondary air conditions this depends on primary air momentum. Volatile content has some effect on flame length but this can be offset by coal fineness. Much of the heat for cement production is for limestone calcination which is a low grade energy requirement. By allowing long residence time in separate direct fired vessels which then feed the high temperature kiln the energy of materials such as oil shale, tyres and lump lignite can be utilised.

The automated optical image analysis software Mineral4/Recognition4 (M4/R4) is capable of performing comprehensive characterisation of different materials throughout the iron ore value chain, including ore fines, lump, sinter, pellets and coke. It has been successfully used by CSIRO for industrial and research projects and has been independently licensed to several world leaders in iron ore production and ironmaking. The M4/R4 software was strongly integrated with a Zeiss microscope to make use of the company’s powerful AxioVision software. This required users to own both Zeiss microscope hardware and AxioVision software in order to be able to use M4/R4 to its full image acquisition and analysis capacity. Therefore, it was not available to the users of equipment produced by other major microscope manufacturers. In recent times however, Zeiss has indicated that the AxioVision software will no longer be supported. To overcome this limitation, CSIRO has proceeded with the next generation of this software, Mineral5/Recognition5 (M5/R5). Importantly, the M5/R5 system has been developed without any dependence on a specific microscope hardware/software platform. Furthermore, the image analysis functionality is now based on openCV open access software and has been fully rewritten using stateof- the-art software development tools to allow reading and processing of all major image formats. Although past applications have been specific to iron ore and ironmaking applications, other improvements, such as an increased number of minerals allowing better gangue segmentation, flexible mineral definitions, improved software modules behaviour and refined analysis routines enables the platform independent M5/R5 image analysis system to be used by researchers in any area of mineralogical or materials research.

The properties along Ida Avenue in Mosman stand 10 m above the road on an outcrop of Sydney sandstone. Access to the houses is generally via a long steep staircase. The owner of 22 Ida Avenue identified an opportunity to use the natural strength of the rock beneath his property to excavate an underground garage and to provide access to the basement of his property via a 10 m elevator shaft from the back of the garage. This paper will describe the design and construction of this unique and innovative urban development.

The Ravenswood Batholith in the Charters Towers -Ravenswood area of north Queensland, was formed by three main episodes of granitoid emplacement between the Early Ordovician and the Early Permian. Granite to granodiorite plutons of the first phase of intrusions in the Early to Middle Ordovician, probably formed by partial melting of a thin continental crust as a result of the emplacement of mafic material derived from the mantle. Some of this mafic material subsequently intruded the Ordovician granitoids as gabbro to diorite complexes. The early granitoids were deformed and metamorphosed prior to emplacement of second phase granodiorite to tonalite plutons in the Late Silurian to Early Devonian. These later plutons have generally not been deformed or recrystallised. Geochemical and isotopic data suggest the Siluro-Devonian plutonism may have been generated by a partial melting of the tholeiitic material emplaced in the lower crust during the Ordovician. A third intrusive phase consists principally off Late Carboniferous to Early Permian gabbro-granite complexes, high level granite to granodiorite complexes, and rhyolitic plugs and diatremes near the batholith margin. Gold mineralisation in the batholith is associated with two major events: mesothermal vein formation in the Early Devonian and porphyry types in the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian.

A co-operative research project, combining Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) research scientists findings and company iron ore geologists' expertise, resulted in new concepts about the origins, distribution and complexitie of iron ores and their parent rocks (banded iron-formation or BIF) in the Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia. Understanding these problems was important to the efficiency of exploration, development and ultimate mining of iron ores. This genetic model, based on a detailed mineralogic background, was modified by Mt Newman geologists to obtain a user oriented classification for practical application in the field.The proposed Pilbara Iron Ore Classification (PIOC) gives iron ore geologists a basis from which to understand, identify and record the various mineralogic and physical characteristics of the many genetically different ore types occurring within and between orebodies in the Pilbara. More definitive quality control over ore products can be achieved based on the detailed understanding of ore types which the PIOC allows, compared to current classifications which deal only with the physical nature of ores. Of equal importance, the classification remains sufficiently simple to enable owners, operators and buyers to achieve a basic appreciation of ore type variations.With little modification, it is believed the classification has applications beyond the Pilbara, to iron ore worldwide.

A scheme is presented whereby the complexities of design and operation of a hydraulically powered coalmine support are modelled using the finite element method. This enables predictions to be made of the interaction of the support with its environment in a variety of operating conditions. The model is a two dimensional representation. The modelling scheme was applied in two case studies. In the first, the performance of a four leg support was uprated by increasing the front leg force. The finite element model enabled changes in overall support performance to be verified. In the second case study, the change in lateral force developed by a two leg support was assessed with changes in support operating height and floor foundation stiffness. The modelling scheme is capable of further development with the possibility of extending the model into three dimensions and the addition of control elements that would enable an actual mining sequence to be Represented.

Electronic detonator technology has been under development for the last two decades. Currently, there are a number of systems commercially available with several others still under development, each with its own unique features. This technology can offer a significant advantage to the drill and blast engineer through their ability to initiate an explosive charge at the æplannedÆ time. This new technology has created huge interest within the drill and blast community and also raised their expectations to produce better blasting outcomes. In many cases, specifications (or even expectations) of desired blast results are not properly defined. Interaction between the input variables (rock mass characteristics and blast design) and results (fragmentation, throw, damage, ground vibrations, etc) and their mechanisms, or relationship to one another, are not very well defined or understood. That is why rock blasting is still considered by many as an art rather than science. With one of the few remaining variables (cap scatter) now controllable, todayÆs blaster finally has the ability to apply science to his trade. Even though electronic detonators are available and becoming more commonly used, current field practices are not always conducive to extracting or deriving the maximum benefit from this new technology. In the authorÆs opinion, the following need to be understood to derive and sustain the maximum value: clear definition or specification(s) of desired outcomes from a given blast; impact of different features in an electronic detonator system (precision, accuracy, flexibility, reliability, etc) and their impact on the desired blasting outcomes; interaction of blast design variables (energy, energy distribution, timing, blast geometry) and their impact on desired outcomes; impact of rock mass variability and quality of blast implementation on the desired blasting outcomes; and critical need to utlilise appropriate tools and systems in order to measure and quantify benefits.In the authorÆs opinion a scientific implementation process is the key to derive the benefits. This paper analyses the industryÆs preparedness to derive the benefits from this technology and proposes a scientific methodology to understand, evaluate and sustain the value from this technology.

The Barrick Gold Granny Smith underground operation located at the Wallaby deposit is currently in a transition period from a near surface operation in ramp up mode to a fully operational deep mining operation with annual production exceeding 1 Mt/a. A key element in this process has been the project execution of the Wallaby Deeps project from initial scoping study in 2007 to the major production component of the Wallaby operation by 2013.The Wallaby Deeps project serves as an example of how an ongoing detailed study program can be integrated into a day to day mining operation assessing risk and mining application in a perceived challenging narrow vein geotechnical environment prior to mining. A detailed study phase to feasibility level is carried out prior to the mining each zone of Wallaby with mining approval only granted on study completion with full justification.A central element in this process is an optimisation study that utilising the Mineable Shape Optimiser (MSO) and Schedule Optimisation Tool (SOT) software tools developed by AMIRA Ltd PRIMO research project is used to carry out an NPV value based option study. This optimisation process being then tempered to reality by a predefined practicality assessment process utilising extensive peer review by operational and study team members as well as industry experts.Other challenges facing the Wallaby Deeps project include the requirement to maintain the ramp up production profile to full production by 2012 without disruption but with pressures of an ongoing geological resource to reserve conversion program essential for the study process and mining approvals and also development rate achievement.To date these challenges are being met with integrated planning and the value of the study program itself. Opinions vary widely within the community on what are legitimate environmental social respon- sibilities. The extreme conservationists see the responsibility as the total preservation of the natural environment achieved by opposition to all forms of industrial development that would disturb it. The `growth-at-any-price men' consider it more important to stimulate economic growth, develop new industries, and maximize profit letting the environment take care of itself: within this wide spectrum of concern are the middle-of- the-road men, part of the vast majority, fully aware of the need to compromise to achieve a satisfactory economic growth rate whilst pre- serving to the greatest extent practicable the con- ditions upon which we depend for a balanced self-perpetuating existence. Environmental change is not new. It is the inevitable accompaniment of human activity. Plato wrote in the 5th Century B.C.* of the devastating changes wrought by man and his animals on the ancient world of the Mediter- ranean. GHD-Black & Veatch (GHD-BV) have completed design and specification of the ash thickening plant at Tarong Power Station, including operation of a pilot plant. Construction of the plant is in progress and commissioning is planned for early-2004. The objective of the new plant is to convert the low concentration (lean phase) ash slurry currently generated by the power station into concentrated slurry which will then be pumped to the existing ash dam. Water recovered from the lean slurry will be returned to the power station for reuse. The drivers behind this project are to extend the life of the ash dam and to reduce water pumping costs. A maximum flow of 1000 litres per second is expected in the thickening plant. The process involves a screening phase, which removes large material that could cause blockages or equipment damage. A 50 metre diameter thickener then concentrates the screened lean ash slurry to 55 - 60 per cent w/w solids. In addition, the thickener plant will allow the harvesting of floating cenospheres (hollow, spherical ash particles) from the lean slurry. Cenospheres are currently collected from the surface of the ash dam and drained on a pad adjacent to the dam. The new system will use a surface skimmer to remove the cenospheres from the thickener and transfer them to settling ponds for further classification. The settling ponds simulate the detention on the existing ash dam, and allow entrained fine ash and slow settling cenospheres time to settle. As settling occurs in ponds, the slow settling cenospheres can be completely recovered whereas when they settle in the dam, the opportunity for recovery is lost. Cenospheres are a valuable by-product produced during the combustion process, and recycling of this material reduces the waste generated by the power station. Water recovered from the thickener drains to a three megalitre reservoir. Water is drawn from the reservoir for thickener plant service water and various other uses in the power station. The bulk of the water is used to sluice ash from the power station to the thickening plant. In the current configuration, surface water from the ash dam is reused but must be pumped several kilometres back up to the power station. The dam also holds an inventory of several thousand megalitres of water and has significant evaporative losses. Therefore the current raw water make up demand is substantial. In addition, some areas of the power station traditionally using raw water will be modified as part of this project to allow the use of recovered water, further reducing the raw water demand. The design incorporates many features of sustainable water management. By more effectively recovering water from the lean ash slurry, the amount of raw water make up required by the system will be significantly reduced. This method of water recovery provides a more sustainable and energy efficient ash-transport mechanism.

HukkiÆs law is an empirical law, which does not take into account several events of energy loss during the fragmentation processes. Since experimental results are very difficult to obtain, for a large range of fragment sizes, the verification of the law is very difficult. The relation between fractures and fragmentation processes with fractal geometry was proposed some decades ago. Empirical laws known in this context show basic features of fractal geometry, mainly self-affinity and power law behaviour. Thus, in this work a model was developed to simulate the fragmentation process and to check the relation between energy consumption and fragment sizes. The model is represented on a regular lattice. Links can represent pathways for fracture processes. The events of fragmentation have energy given by a probability distribution function. In the model there is no mass loss. Propagation of fractures occurs as self-avoiding random walks on the regular lattice.

With the rapid increase and development of high-speed trains (HSTs), the problems such as train-induced ground vibration and its dynamic effects on nearby structures have become a major environmental concern in urban areas. Ground-born vibrations produced by high-speed trains pose a great challenge for engineers to build structures in such areas that is applicable for residents. In order to study the effect of train-induced ground vibration on nearby buildings, an advanced three-dimensional finite element model for train-induced ground vibrations has been developed using PLAXIS 3D Ultimate. The results of the in situ measurements which was previously carried out by the authors were used to validate the numerical model. The field test for ground vibration due to the passage of a high-speed train was carried out on the Istanbul-Ankara high-speed railway in Turkey with a train speed of 250 km/h. An in-depth analysis was achieved to investigate the effect of different soil properties on the train-induced ground vibrations by using the verified model. According to the result of the vibration analysis, the relative vibration response curves in all directions (x, y, z) for different soil conditions were obtained comparatively. The obtained results of the vibration analysis are discussed in order to figure out some useful conclusions.

Cable bolts and rock bolts are used as primary and secondary anchoring systems in many underground mines. Reports on the premature failure of cable bolts and rock bolts due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in underground coalmines have been increasing in the past two decades. The previous studies found that the SCC in both rock bolts and cable bolts occur as a consequence of atomic hydrogen diffusion into the material, which is known as hydrogen-induced stress corrosion cracking, HISCC (Craig et al, 2016; Wu et al, 2018b). While research to understand the process of SCC occurrence in underground mines is still required, finding a prevention solution to protect the bolts from HISCC is crucial. In this study, we analyse a variety of commercially available coatings for steel corrosion prevention, including barrier coating (ie epoxy, polyester TGIC) and sacrificial coating (hot-dip galvanising). We test the coating on coupons manufactured from rock bolts and cable bolts used in the coal mining industry.

The professional skills shortage is intensifying, and commentators are predicting a shortfall in supply of qualified professionals for the mining industry, ranging from thousands to tens-of-thousands by 2020 (Tuckwell, 2011; Scoble, 2011; Laurence and Hebblewhite, 2011). Human resources are already stretched, and university graduates arriving in the workplace are often moved rapidly into management positions where there is limited scope to develop their engineering proficiency. This process may well be developing excellent young managers, but our industry is producing fewer excellent young engineers (Munro and Tilyard, 2009). Many believe that it is engineering excellence that is likely to be the key to our industryÆs success in the decade to come. An innovative in-house graduate development program has been created by specialists at the JK Centre in partnership with two mining companies. This program, known as MetSkill«, has been running throughout 2012. Groups of graduates have had to identify a process plant optimisation opportunity and embark on a structured program of data collection and analysis, facilitated by a æteaching teamÆ of researchers and consultants from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and JKTech. This group project culminates in a report-back session to senior company officials. Along the way, a series of short workshops and other activities provide opportunities to work on specialist skills, and support is also offered by senior technical specialists from the companies involved.This paper outlines key features of the MetSkill« program, along with a report-card on progress in 2012 and plans for further program development in 2013.CITATION:Drinkwater, D and Bianco, N, 2012.
