An important problem occurring in the iron and steel industry of Egypt is the presence of manganese oxide and chlorine with different percentages in the Bahariya Iron Ore Deposit, Western Desert, Egypt. In this work we used a geostatistical method known as the Volume- Variance Relationship to predict grade fluctua- tions of Fe% , Mn% and Cl% in the ore after blasting a certain volume from the ore deposit, on the other hand, if we have a certain limit for each of these chemical components, we can select the bench blasting dimension to give these limits.

We are all no doubt aware that with today's high costs it is more important than ever to get the maximum possible return on capital invested in the mining industry. Screening is an important and often costly process in the size classification of industrial minerals and for this reason alone it is essential for both managers and operators to fully understand what type of screening equipment is best suited for a particular application and why. The advent of elastic materials such as rubber and polyurethane have added a new dimension to the process of screening. It is important to understand why the physical properties of these materials can be of benefit in the screening process, and recognise which type of screening applications best take advantage of these orooerties.

Production scheduling is often reliant on an estimation of a mineÆs trucking capacity. While this mechanistic approach is relatively simple, it often over-estimates actual throughput resulting in under-utilisation of downstream process and a shortfall in revenue. An alternate approach has been developed that recognises the interdependency between processes in the mine production system including materials loading, haulage and crushing. This approach incorporates a heuristic model based on queuing theory that accounts for the variability in performance of individual processes and that this paper presents the results of a study comparing the conventional approach to mine scheduling with a capacity constrained model at a large open cut mine having a truck and shovel fleet. The capacity constrained model consistently predicted a lower material throughput compared to the conventional approach. Differences in throughput between the two approaches were found to increase with loading time, for example when loading time exceeded 3.9 minutes there was a shortfall of up to 40 per cent in estimated throughput. Longer travel times tended to ameliorate any differences. When applied to a mine schedule that extended over a two and a half year period, the difference was equivalent to a shortfall of nearly eight per cent in total material movement.

The Permo-Triassic Bowen Basin developed during the final stages of the Tasman Orogenic Phase in eastern Australia. The basin has considerable economic value as a source of coal, natural gas and precious metals. The basin, which is of controversial origin, is preserved as a north-south trending, asymmetrical syncline bounded in places by faults. It is here interpreted as a retroarc foreland basin which developed on the landward (west) side of a continental arc associated with continent-ocean plate convergence. Initiation of the basin occurred via back-arc extension in Early Permian times, coincident with a phase of talc-alkaline arc volcanism. Early Permian, mostly marine sedimentation gave away to extensive coastal and alluvial plain depositional systems in Late Permian times, coincident with a resurgence of arc volcanism. Triassic sedimentation was almost entirely alluvial and coeval with westward propagation of thrust sheets from the eastern basin margin. Compressive tectonics climaxed in Middle to Late Triassic times, terminating sediment accumulation and uplifting the entire area.

The geologic settings, geochemistry of host rocks, mineralogy and metal values in modern back-arc volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) mineralisation are very similar to those in many ancient polymetallic VHMS deposits. The geology, distribution and styles of seafloor mineralisation in modem back-arc basins, especially the eastern Manus and Lau Basins, southwest Pacific, are compared to VHMS deposits in the Mount Read and Mount Windsor districts of Australia . Based on exploration and research in modem back-arc settings, geologists are now observing the direct analogues of the polymetallic VHMS deposits currently being exploited in ancient back-arc volcanic belts throughout Australia and the world.

In the early stages of the planning of a new exploitation, the error in ore reserve estimation is an important factor that must not be disregarded. As this error can be computed by geostatistical methods, the risk of the venture can be calculated for different recognition patterns in a certain assumption of economical conditions. A case story is described for an open pit phosphate deposit in which grade/tonnage curves and their confidence intervals are related to an economic function for three drilling patterns and decisions are taken on the basis of cost and value of supplementary information.

Better quality at lower cost is today's formula for remaining competitive in a world market. For an integrated steel company, high quality low cost steel production must originate before the blast furnace. In 1979, when U.S. Steel initiated a Quality Management Program throughout its steelmaking operations, efforts began at the coal, ore and flux mines. The objective was to improve the quality and reduce the variability of the critical parameters for steelmaking raw materials, to get the blast furnaces, and subsequently the melt shops, under optimum control. The general details of U.S. Steel's Quality Management Program are discussed and how it was used to promote the desired improvements in steelmaking raw materials. Some of the outstanding results obtained by the cooperative efforts between the mines and the steel plants are reported. The lessons learned by U.S. Steel were through upgrading existing operations and facilities. These principles should now be applied to new projects and the benefits of good quality management should commence from the time new projects are Commissioned.

This paper describes the conver- gence and load measurements carried out in inclined seams at five longwall faces, two of which were supported by hydraulic props and the other three by conventional timber supports in Karadon-Gelik mine. The minimum support capacities determined in this study are compared with the results obtained from two empirical approaches suggested by Wilson (1975) and Jacobi (1981). The characteristics of hydraulic props to be used and support patterns in the longwalls are found, conclu- sions are drawn and suggestions are made. Design nomograms are prepared for field engineers, in order to be able to approach the problem more confidently and realistically.

edicted increase in, Aluminium production and the possibility of a diminishing supply of petroleum coke for anode electrodes in alumina reduction cells makes it desirable to find alternative electrode materials. Brown coal char, with a lower ash content and with an elemental purity similar to petroleum coke, has been produced by leaching in hydrochloric acid, washing with water and charring at 115000. The cost of processing is estimated to be competitive with petroleum coke. Without further processing the bulk density and real density were undesirably low, but. by briquetting the coal before charring and crushing, the bulk density was improved to 92 per cent of the petroleum coke value and the Particle density was improved to 92 per cent of the density of petroleum coke by water-displacement or 75 per cent by mercury displacement. Pre-baked electrodes were prepared from the char alone, mixtures of petroleum coke and char and from petroleum coke alone, all bonded with coal tar pitch. The electrodes were tested for the usual physical properties and were, evaluated for performance in a laboratory size alumina reduction cell. Electrodes based on brown coal char alone were found to be inferior in physical properties, and performance, but mixtures of the char and petroleum coke, despite poorer density, electrical resistivity and carbon consumption on a theoretical basis, in performance tests gave up to 17 per cent better carbon consumption per weight of aluminium produced and 21 percent better electrical current efficiency than the electrodes based on petroleum coke alone. It is suggested that larger scale tests are warranted.

The quartzite added at the blast furnace for the purpose of adjusting the chemistry of the burden inputs is shown to have a disproportionate impact on both the level and the variability of the hot metal silicon (HMSi). This conclusion is supported not only by direct correlation involving data from five blast furnaces, but also by mass balances. In one case the R2 correlation coefficient was 0.96 and the mass balance was accurate to within five per cent for a wide range of quartzite additions. The results indicate that as much as 43 per cent of the silicon in the added quartzite reports directly to the hot metal. Indeed, silicon from quartzite was found to be much more likely to report to the hot metal compared to silicon from regular sources (eg coke and sinter), reflecting differences in the activity of the silicon source.

Secondary steelmaking (or ladle metallurgy) has been developed as a post- steelmaking ladle treatment to produce steel of superior quality. Its rapid growth has resulted from quality improvements, productivity increase, operational flexibility and process route economics. Advances in secondary steelmaking are very impressive during the past decade, and many commercial systems have been developed for performing one or more of the following unit operations: degassing, atmosphere regulation, reheating, refining with synthetic slag, rinsing gas treatment, injection of solid materials and alloying. The metallurgical requirements imposed by the current competitive steel market include more precise analysis tolerances, minimum level of detrimental elements, improved cleanness, demanding service performance and better processability. In most cases, these requirements could only be realized by the application of appropriate secondary refining facilities. Continuing developments in simplicity of design, cost advantage, quick cycle time, improvements in peripheral services such as refractories, instrumentation and in-situ analysis, extensive exploration of new applications, and the use of computer, can be expected. An exciting future is predicted for the widespread adoption of secondary steelmaking to perform most of the major refining functions over a variety of steel quality. It will also become a vital link in the total steelmaking process for production of tonnage steel at the large integrated steelworks and the mini-steelmills.

Until recently, nickel laterite projects have been largely ignored, due to their supposedly higher treatment costs compared with sulphides, and to their perceived processing difficulties. A number of laterite projects in the 1970s were abandoned because of high capital and operating costs, while others experienced severe technical difficulties. Conventional wisdom had it that laterites would not be exploited until most of the sulphide orebodies had been depleted. Why then, have Australian mining and exploration companies started a resurgence of interest in the treatment of nickel laterites? It all began with the Bulong project, which has been under study since 1987, while more recently two further projects, Murrin Murrin and Cawse, have been initiated and are being fast-tracked to take advantage of the current high nickel and cobalt prices. A further project in NSW, Syerston, has also been investigated at bench-scale, but no further development has yet been announced. All these projects have the following advantages: 1. Good location near a major mining centre and,reasonably close to power, water, roads, accommodation and a developed service industry. 2. Straightforward, low cost mining. 3. Low cost of acid or sulphur. 4. Good to very good cobalt credits. In addition, there have been significant technological developments in the design and operation of high pressure autoclaves and high rate thickeners, as well as solvent extraction and electrowinning technology. This has helped to decrease capital costs and technical risks, and has allowed the development of alternative flowsheets to the existing laterite operations (Taylor, 1996).

Conflicting claims and views on the priming of ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) are reviewed; certain fallacies and misconceptions are rectified. Optimum priming systems for a range of blasthole conditions are indicated. Moves towards optimum priming lead to reductions in the combined cost of drilling, blasting and handling the material. With shallow blastholes, two-point priming is rarely warranted. Best blasting results from single priming are usually obtained when the primer is located near, but not at, the bottom of the blasthole. As blast- hole depth increases, two-point priming becomes more reliable and effective than single priming. For two-point priming, primers should be located such that detonation waves in the ANFO collide at grade level or, if preferred, within a hard band in the burden. Where blastholes are very deep and/or strata variations can be appreciable, three or more spaced primers are often justified. The effectiveness of a primer varies with its detonation pressure, diameter and length. Primer properties influence the velocity of detonation (VOD) near the primer, but do not affect the final (steady-state) VOD in the ANFO. Solution transport of gold and silver has occurred as a result of the chemical weathering of many Western Australian epigenetic gold deposits. Evidence for the remobilization of gold exists in the form of small crystalline octahedra, mustard gold, flake gold, and coatings on iron-oxide. This "secondary" gold is of high purity (low silver content). It is believed that the high chloride content of laterite profiles combined with the acid produced by the oxidation and hydrolysis (ferrolysis) of iron has caused dissolution of Au/Ag and Au/Te alloys. Gold, and less frequently silver, is subsequently reprecipitated in the profile nearby.Pyrite, which is a ubiquitous accessory of gold in vein or lode systems, is probably an important source of iron for the development of acidity. Where carbonate is abundant in the primary assemblage, neutralization directs the oxidation of sulphide to a path which produces thiosulphate, and an alternative type of Au/Ag oxidation process. Sulphide/carbonate ratios in the vein system, and adjacent wallrock are seen as important in determining the course and extent of remobilization in the oxidized zone of gold deposits.

An improved method of sample recovery for use with rotary percussion drilling has been developed. Cuttings can be recovered continuously from either dry or wet drilling, and the recovery under dry conditions is seldom below 99% of the cuttings brought to the surface by the rig. The system is designed for use with top drive drilling rigs using flush-jointed drill rods. The key feature of the system is a self-aligning mechanical seal around the drill rods. The sealing unit is removably fixed to a collar section of cas ing. the cuttings are recovered in a plastic bag attached to the bottom outlet of a cyclone. A valve at the bottom of the cyclone permits the cuttings representing various depths to I,e recovered separately for examination eind 0(iclysis. The Rio Capim kaolin district, located in the north-east of Parß State, Brazil, constitutes one of the worldÆs largest high-whiteness kaolin reserves for the paper coating industry. It contains, at the base of the main ore, a soft kaolin that gradually changes at the top into a ferruginous duricrust followed by a flint kaolin. The flint kaolin is completely discarded during the exploitation of the soft kaolin. With the view of a more complete beneficiation, aiming at a sustainable development of the minerals industry, the use of this residual flint kaolin has been considered for the manufacturing of zeolites. Zeolites were synthesised from the flint kaolin through a reaction between metakaolinite with soda at 80¦C, for durations of 24 to 144 hours. The transformation into metakaolinite was carried out at 800¦C and was not affected by the titanium oxides. For a synthesis time of only 24 hours, a zeolite 4A very close to its theoretical definition was obtained, whereas for synthesis times longer than 96 hours, a slight formation of hydro-sodalite was also observed. The synthesised zeolites were tested as cationic adsorbents on 0.5 molar solutions of Cu, Pb, Cd and Zn. The adsorption was measured for contact durations of one and three days. It was noted that the exchange kinetics were slow and that the retention was significantly greater after three days than after one day. The retention was greater than 50 per cent of the theoretical exchange capacity for Pb, Cd and Zn, which was different to Cu, where the retention exceeded its theoretical exchange capacity.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand own and operate an opencut mine supplying coal to on-site power stations at Mae Moh, 600 km North of Bangkok. The mine is being expanded from an annual production of 1.5 million tonnes per year in 1982 to over 9.5 million tonnes per year by 1991. The mine will be amongst the largest open pit operations in the world. It is technically difficult to operate and plan due to complex geology, weak strata and surface constraints including reservoirs, forests and traditional villages. This paper presents a case study of mine planning for the above project including associated collection and processing of geological and geotechnical information. The existing operation is described, as well as the strategy adopted for the mine at expanded production. The planning covers various phases of mine planning including a Conceptual Study, a Definitive Study and detailed short term planning. Each stage incorporated new information and reflected a higher level of confidence in the data and resulting plan. Sophisticated computer techniques were required including geological modelling, calculation of volumes, geotechnical analysis, scheduling and costing. The planning was undertaken on site by a team of Australian and Thai Engineers as part of the Thailand-Australia Lignite Mines Development Project which is a four year programme of assistance funded by the Australian Government.

The intention of this work was to con struct a machine on a pilot scale which could hoist a mixture of ore and water through a height of 300 metres and to operate the mach- ine to determine the parameters which affect the success of upscaling the machine to a pro- duction unit size. The investigation into this form of hoist- ing was stimulated by the interest shown by Roan Selection Trust (RST) into the Mills Pulse vessel system. Agreement was reached between these two parties that RST would in- vestigate the Mills System and determine if this system, shown to be successful on a Lab- oratory scale, would be successful as a pro- duction unit. The investigation has shown, however, that for practical reasons, the Mills System is not satisfactory. As a consequence, the RST system was invented and developed which on a pilot plant scale would be capable of lifting 7,000 tonnes of ore per month. The inventions included amongst other things, a valve to control the flow of the abrasive mixture of ore and water, a new pumping system employing a filter mechanism, and a method of changing the downward direction of flow of the pipe mixture through the plant to an upward flow in the hoisting pipe. The valve has operated to pressures equivalent to 300 metres
