Geostatistics is now widely used in the mining industry in the estimation of ore reserves and terms like kriging, variogram and estimation variance are becoming well known. Ordinary Kriging (OK) has been found by some practioners to be a superior tool compared with other ore reserve estimators. However, kriging hasn't been the ultimate solution to difficulties which may arise in ore reserve estimation. Several additional geostatistical techniques have been recently developed for more efficient ore reserve estimation in some deposits, especially gold and other precious metals. These include indicator kriging and probability kriging which are useful tools to work with in a selective mining operation.

The object of this paper is to show in some detail the mining challenges that have been presented and overcome during the successful development of the main exhaust ventilation drive that will service the Ballarat East mine during its 20+ year lifespan. Topics to be discussed in this paper include the ground support regimes employed, the ground conditions encountered during construction, how the heading was recovered after falls of ground and the effectiveness of geotechnical probe drilling at Ballarat.

Total extraction is a misnomer and invariably some coal losses occur in the mining of pillars. "Fulls" pillar extraction is by the pocket and fender method, the splitting method or the open end method, with extraction in the pillar, and in rows of pillars in planned sequence, using combinations of coal and timber and roof-bolts for support. Where circumstances dictate, partial extraction is used, leaving behind portions of pillars in large blocks for support. The use of such extraction plans and supports as minimum guidelines has contributed greatly to safety in United States Coal Mines.

Projected cooling requirements for ERPM led to the first proposals for the large- scale use of ice for mine cooling in the early 1980's. Following successful research into ice conveying and ice melting a large ice plant was commissioned at Harmony in 1985 and a much larger 6000 ton per day plant is presently under construction at ERPM. A brief description of the mining project is given, followed by general descriptions of the surface ice plants and the ice conveying system, the systems for using the ice for mine cooling, and the control of the whole ice cooling System.

This paper discusses a long range mine plan development at the Santa Fe Pacific Gold Twin Creeks Mine based on the reserves of Mega pit. The key constraints of the schedule development included two types of mill ore targets (sulphide and oxide mill ore), consideration of blending of six chemical constituents (sulphide sulphur, carbonate, organic carbon, the ratio of iron/[arsenic, antimony]), and mining of acid generating and acid neutralizing waste at pre-defined proportions. Solution approaches, selected results, and project experiences are discussed.

Fine grinding in an air-swept ball mill working in closed circuit with a forced vortex air classifier has been investigated first in continuous laboratory and then in industrial scale. Results from the laboratory circuit have shown significant influence of mill load (powder filling) on the capacity of the circuit. In laboratory scale the mill load was measured and controlled by a weighing platform placed under the complete mill set-up. The mill load of the industrial air-swept ball mill has till now been controlled by measuring the power consumption of the mill motor. Thus, it was necessary to operate far from the range of optimal mill filling. To improve the circuit performance, alternative ways of mill load measurement were investigated. An important factor was investment cost, as many fine grinding mills operate in relatively small circuits that do not wan-ant large investment. In this case the task was accomplished by using a piezoelectric strain transducer, which detected strain changes in the mill shell. It was installed in the midpoint of the shell, where the highest deformation was obtained. As the transducer was on the top position, it indicated compression, and on the bottom position it measured tension. By taking the difference between the readings, it was possible to calculate total strain variations, directly proportional to the mill load. The signal from the transducer was sent to a control room via a cordless infrared communication system, employing a microprocessor control card, which could further regulate other operating parameters of the circuit according to the software model. The installation required very low investment cost and provided simplicity of application as well as stability and reliability of characteristics under severe industrial condition. The measurement system made it possible to optimise the mill load and thus increase the production from 3.2 to 3.7 dh (15 per cent), and stabilise the circuit operation.

Increasing concern with the emission of sulphur dioxide from smelters and roasters has caused renewed interest in processes which can use waste sulphur dioxide, such as the sulphation of nickel laterite ores. The process described here proposes to by-pass the production of sulphuric acid and react laterite directly with a sulphur dioxide containing atmosphere. A thermodynamic analysis identified operating windows in which nickel sulphate forms while iron oxide (the major impurity in most laterite ores) remains stable. The initial assumptions included unit activity of all species except nickel oxide. The lowest possible nickel oxide activity (while maintaining selectivity) increased with increasing temperature, indicating that selective sulphation is favoured by low temperatures. The temperature of interest was found to be between 500 and 800¦C. Calculations show that a feed gas containing ten per cent SO2, five per cent 02, balance N2 requires a temperature greater than 650¦C for selective sulphation of nickel. Laboratory experiments showed that the assumption of unit activity of ferric sulphate was unrealistic above about 680¦C due most likely to the formation of solid solutions which decreased the ferric sulphate activity. Results are presented which illustrate the limiting equilibrium sulphur trioxide partial pressures at 700 and 730¦C below which selective sulphation occurs. Cobalt extraction was usually between 80 and 95 per cent under conditions yielding selective sulphation, whilst nickel extraction was about 50 to 75 per cent depending on temperature and choice of upper limit of iron extraction. An operating diagram is presented for a limonite ore and shows that the optimum reaction conditions are 680¦C and an input gas containing 20 per cent SO2. Under these conditions nickel, cobalt and iron extractions are 73, 95 and two per cent respectively.

The effect of accurate detonator delay timing on blast results can now be studied with the development of the ICI Electronic Detonator. This detonator has an accuracy and precision orders of magnitude greater than the current range of pyrotechnic delay detonators. A series of field trials have been conducted to quantify the effect of delay accuracy and timing on blast performance. These trials have demon- strated that delay timing can have a marked influence on blast fragmen- tation, muckpile displacement, blast vibration and airblast.

Most coal mines in Chongqing Area are highly gassy mines and liable to outburst of coal cnd methane. In order to harness mine environment and raise the Prodction capacity, methane predrainage is generally taken as a main preventive measure against outburst by all mines. In the recent ten years, the drainage volume per year has increased from 38.25 million m3 to mote than 100 million m3 with a volume over 12 m3 per tome of coal. In some mines, the draining rate is approaching to 50 percent, the rate in mining districts is up to 60 to 70 percent. The predrainage volume accounts for one fourth of total drainage volume. All these have effectively prevented the occurrence of coal and methane outbursts.This is the current situation of methane predrainage in coal mines in Chongqing area, the methods of predrainage to prevent outbursts and related parametres comprise:1. methods, technologies, supervision and effect of predrainage in different geological and mining conditions,2. the change of methane parametres pre-and post-drainage and the analysis of the effect of methane predrainage to prevent outbursts, and3. ways to improve the effect of methane predrainage.Thus the safety, reliability and production of Changqing Coal Mines will be enhanced.

Direct reduction of iron ore (DR) is one of the promising technology emerging in the world's steel industry. Kinetics and Mossbauer studies of DR with hydrogen have been carried out at two temperatures of 600¦C and 800¦C in this investigation. The results show that different controlling steps govern the reduction rate at different temperatures. The mechanism was also found to vary during the reduction. The Mossbauer spectra of the samples reduced in various time intervals were studied to determine the phase changes during reduction.

Today the application of computer programs for planning of mine-ventilation and for safety- analysis of ventilation systems is widespread practice in German mining. The computer program for network calculat- ion, developed at the "Mine Ventilation Testing Centre of the Westfalische Berggewerkschaft- skasse" allows the distribution of airflow and pressure in mines to be calculated. In a physically well founded manner it takes into account the natural ventilation as well as changes of volume-flow in the mine, which both are dependent on pressure and temperature. Compared to an incompressible treatment of the mine air these circumstances are of increasing importance with the increase of depth, air temperatures and fan-pressures'. This especial- ly holds for the calculation of airflows during failures of fans or for assessing the influence of open mine-fires on ventilation. The application of the program is very easy and its structure is made to fit the requirements of practice. For instance it takes into account the fan characteristics of all fans. Key blocks occur on the surface of excavations and on the walls of the ornamental stones and limestone quarries due to the formation of joint planes, fissures, microfaults and quarrying operations. Movements of these key blocks have produced numerous important failures and are responsible for routine overbreak and rock falls accounting for great costs. The thrust of this work is to demonstrate how to delimit zones of poten- tial key blocks (danger zones) in the wall of Bani-Khalid quarry of lime- stone by using the block theory technique (stereographic projection). The final result of this study indicated that, there are three potential key blocks, the most critical one has been determined. To treat the problem, we sug- gest either to provide timely support to prevent the movement of this block, or to analyze it further in hopes that available friction on the faces will hold it safely in place.

The United States Steel Mining Co., Inc. recently experienced a major mine fire at the Cumberland Mine. This mine is located in Greene County, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. and is mining a high volatile bituminous coal seam (Pittsburgh Seam). The mine fire was success- fully controlled and extinguished without loss of life or serious injury to any miner or mine rescue personnel and finally reopened within 40 days of its inception.

The Dome Mine of Timmins Mining company is located in South Porcupine, N.W. Ontario. The orebody being mined partially lies in the No. 3 shaft pillar. Stability analysis has been carried out to establish the influence of nearby mining on ground movement in the shaft vicinity. Mathematical modelling of shaft displacement has been done for stope layout at depths from 180-210 m and distances of 10-50 m from the shaft. Analysis indicated that ground displacement around the shaft is below 1 mm/m and one third less for cut and fill than in the case of open stope mining. The result of the investigation was later confirmed by cut and fill mining of this orebody.

"Decision-making in mining is a challenging task. Optimal decisions regarding shovel and truck allocations, aligned with the optimal short-term production schedules, are crucial in keeping the operations in line with the company’s long-term objectives. In this paper, we present two main modelling components as the means to achieve near-optimal operational plans: a mixed integer linear goal programming model to allocate trucks and shovels to mining faces over a shift-by-shift basis so that operating costs are minimised and resource utilisations are maximised through the planning horizon a discrete-event simulation model to investigate the behaviour of a truck-and-shovel haulage system in the presence of uncertainty within mining operations. The goals integrated into the mathematical model are to: maximise production minimise deviations from the target head grade minimise deviations in tonnage feed to the processing plants from the desired feed minimise operating cost.The mathematical model provides shovel assignments and the target productions as an input to the discrete event simulation model while meeting the desired goals and constraints of the mining operation. We illustrate the applications of the discrete event simulation model by presenting a large-scale oil sands case study. The New England Fold Belt forms the easternmost and youngest section of the Tasman Fold Belt System of eastern Australia. From middle Palaeozoic to Early Cretaceous time it was the site of extensive episodic calc-alkaline magmatism related to W-dipping subduction. The oldest rocks may have formed at least partly in a volcanic island arc, but from the Late Devonian, the fold belt developed as a convergent Pacific-type continental margin. For Late Devonian-Carboniferous time, parallel belts representing continental margin volcanic arc, forearc basin and subduction complex assemblages can be recognised. Major dextral transform faulting may have offset parts of the fold belt in the Late Carboniferous. In addition, some structural blocks which appear to be out of place in the overall palaeogeographic setting are possible exotic or suspect terranes. A great variety of lode deposits ranging in age from middle Palaeozoic to Early Cretaceous is present in the New England Fold Belt. The vast majority of these are related to emplacement of extensive granite plutons and eruption of continental silicic volcanics in Late Permian-Late Triassic time. However, volcanogenic massive sulphides and volcanic hosted epithermal gold-silver deposits in older rock sequences include one major orebody (Mount Morgan) and several important ones (Mount Chalmers, Cracow, Silver Spur, Cangai and Halls Peak). Some problematical deposits are best classified as metamorphic-hydrothermal. These include gold-bearing quartz reefs and stockworks in sedimentary host rocks, the most important of which are at Gympie, and antimony-gold- tungsten mineralisation in the New England area, mainly at Hillgrove.

The Mount Kasi gold deposit in Vanua Levu represents an epithermal, high sulphur, gold-enargite system occurring within a volcanic caldera of Middle to Upper Miocene age. High level breccia pipes flare upward and form flat lying, near surface, mushroom shaped sheets parallel and near to the present land surface. The upper portions of the pipes contain explosion breccias which are capped by sandy siliceous sinter-like beds and are cut by alunite veins. Outlying intercalated scoriasceous lavas and breccia sheets show evidence of subsidence within a shallow basin. Detailed mapping of breccia types, intensity of silicification and the presence of multiple quartz veining and enargite abundance outlined blocks of more consistent gold mineralization within the breccias. This work has provided a model for mineralization which will aid future exploration and ore reserve estimations. A significant eluvial concentration of gold occurs in soils overlying the breccia sheet.

I lamata is within the Morobe Goldfield (7¦ 25' S, 146¦ 39' E) on the Wau (SB 55-14),1:250,000 scale map sheet (Fig 1). The deposit is 13 km SW of Wau, within the headwaters of the Upper Watut River, at an average elevation of 2000 m. The steep mountainous terrain is covered by dense tropical rainforest and access is by helicopter or by foot track. The deposit has been described previously by Wells and Young (1991) and 1)enwer. Leach and Mowat (1995). Data collected to late 1996 have been used to estimate an Inferred Resource of 9.2 Mt at 3.1 g/t gold using a cutoff of 0.5 g/t. This contains a high grade portion for which an Inferred Resource of 1.2 Mt at 9.7 grt gold has been estimated using a 5.0 g/t cutoff.

AND INTRODUCTION The Lochiel coal deposit, a large Tertiary soft brown coal deposit in the mid north of South Australia, is currently being investigated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) as a potential source of fuel for a base load power station. Feasibility studies indicated that the proposed dragline method of overburden removal was viable but economically sensitive to both highwail and dump batter angles. The unusual properties of the unconsolidated overburden sediments and the groundwater regime posed a number of intimately related hydrogeological and geotechnical questions which were addressed before and during the excavation of a trial pit. All strata at Lochiel are of soil strength, and artesian aquifers occur above and below the coal. From the initial evaluation of the deposit a number of hydrogeological questions were defined. These related to the rate at which the pore pressure in the silts is reduced by dewatering, the extent of the reduction in pore pressure due to prestripping, and the feasibility of dewatering and depressurising carbonaceous silty sand sequences. The site of the trial pit was selected to answer these and other questions from the basis of a detailed geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical understanding. The trial pit dewatering system simulated a full scale mine dewatering system and included ten pumped wells, twenty drainage wells, and nearly 400 monitoring instruments. It operated from September 1986 to June 1987. The excavation was carried out between February and May 1987.
