New Zealand Steel's Taharoa titano-magnetite mine, south of Auckland, set two national load records when it transported around 2000 t of mining equipment three kilometres overland on time, under budget and without safety incident. It was the first time in New Zealand that four platform trailers were assembled end-to-end to transport a load. It was also the first time that a single load of 1000 t was transported on platform trailers. The need for the relocation of all equipment was realized five years ago. It took two years of planning and specialist advice to relocate the mine's 250 t dredge, 500 t surge bin, 1000 t concentrator plant and ancillary equipment from the Southern Mining Region across a specially designed haul road to the Central Mining Region. The project was carried out during a six-week shutdown in early 2001. Two dry docks were constructed, one at each end of the relocation route. The equipment was floated into a dismantling pond that was interconnected with the dry dock in the Southern Region. Through pumping, the water levels were controlled to allow transfer of the separated units from the dismantling pond into the dry dock. Once drained, sets of self-elevating platform trailers were used to transport the main units, one at a time, between the dry docks. Five prime movers were used to pull the loads. At the receiving end, the units were off-loaded in a dry dock interlinked with ,the first mining pond. The equipment was relocated because the reserves in the Southern Mining Region were mined out. A natural watercourse û the Wainui Stream û defines the northern boundary of the Southern Region and the objective became to relocate the mining plant to the other side of the stream and re-establish in the Central Region. The project team selected the trailers as the most effective means of transporting the equipment, particularly given the non-invasive means of crossing the Wainui Stream. Negotiations with prime contractor Tranzcarr Heavy Haulage Ltd commenced in mid-2000. The remainder of 2000 was spent in developing concepts with the contractor, detailed designing, preparing the dry docks, haul road and initial mine plan for the Central Region. These activities occurred with no conflict to the normal site production.

The state-of-the-art in cave seismic monitoring is reviewed, with the latest developments in active seismic monitoring included. Seismic monitoring systems are routinely used by most of the world’s block and panel caving mines to track the cave initiation and progression. The current best practice is to use the cloud of seismic event locations as a proxy for cave growth somewhere below. Problems with event location reliability due to seismic ray bending around the (unknown) cave are side-stepped by using sensors installed above the cave. However, the aseismic gap – the (unknown) distance between actual cave back and seismic event cloud – currently hinders reliable estimation of cave geometry.Velocity inversions using the passive seismic data are inexpensive and should be undertaken more routinely. The straight-ray methods should be used with caution, as the underlying assumptions are invalid in caving environments. The double-difference method is more correct for the caving situation, and there have been some promising results published. Constrained geometric inversions make a lot of sense, but have yet to be demonstrated successfully.Two active seismic source have recently been developed for use in the caving environment: a piezoelectric source for ranges up to a few hundred metres and a pneumatically-powered source for ranges up to a kilometre. These sources produce signals on standard mine seismic sensors that can be used to measure seismic velocity variations down to 0.01 per cent resolution. This allows the cave progression to be monitored by measuring tiny changes to seismic velocities as the rock above the cave is fractured and destressed.CITATION:Lynch, R A, 2016. It is the purpose of this paper to produce some evidence on the accuracy to be expected from normal assay procedure using the usual first class equipment, and to examine the effect that many assaying inaccuracies have on reported metallurgical recoveries.Generally speaking, the evaluation of the gold content of a mineral ore sample by the fire assay method is a relatively simple process.A weighed quantity of finely ground ore is fused with suitable fiuxes including litharge and a reducing agent to give a button of lead and a quantity of slag. The shower of lead produced by the reduction of the added litharge collects the gold and silver present in the ore, concentrating the values into the lead button.The button of lead, after separation from the slag, is, on heating in an absorbent cupel in a current of air, reoxidised to litharge and absorbed into the cupel leaving a gold and silver bead in the cupel. This bead' is heated in a solution of nitric acid to dissolve the silver, leaving the gold undissolved to be dried and weighed. Knowing the original weight of the ore and the weight of the gold prill the value of the ore is easily calculated.Summarising1. Fusion Process.-Ore plus fiuxes give a slag plus lead button.2. In Australia, responsibility for abandoned mines can be unclear. With a few exceptions, state and territory governments have become responsible for abandoned mines on Crown land and private landholders are responsible for abandoned mines on freehold land. Abandoned mines pose risks and opportunities across the full suite of sustainability themes (environmental, human health and safety, socio-economic and community development) after mining ceases.Across Australia, there are more than 50 000 abandoned mines recorded, ranging in size from individual shafts to large polluting open cut mines. Addressing the safety and environmental impacts of these sites, as well as the socio-economic development opportunities of significant rehabilitation projects, requires the implementation of effective policies and programs. Qualitatively defined graded scales or ‘rubrics’ have been used for many years in student assessment and increasingly in the performance assessment of other sectors (Davidson, 2005). While risk-based maturity models have been used for safety prioritisation (Westrum, 1993; Hudson, 2007; DRET, 2008; Hancock, 2010) and evaluation of organisational development (Esteves et al, 2010), this paper is the first to adapt maturity models for the evaluation of abandoned mine rehabilitation programs in Australia.In this paper, we used indicators based on the national policy for abandoned mines to assess the maturity of abandoned mine programs. Fourteen elements of maturity were identified (Unger et al, 2012) under the five chapters of the national policy for abandoned mines (MCMPR and MCA, 2010). Jurisdictions were then evaluated and ranked on their maturity on the basis of information that was web-accessible. Information transparency of abandoned mines policies and programs is in itself one element of the maturity chart. Each jurisdiction in Australia was compared with one another and with a Canadian jurisdiction; the British Columbia (BC) Crown Contaminated Sites Program (CCSP), which represents leading practice (Unger, 2009; Unger et al, 2012).Our research found that in some jurisdictions in Australia there is little or no information on abandoned mine programs or individual abandoned mine sites on government websites, while other jurisdictions provided very detailed program information on planning, funding and implementation. Each jurisdiction in Australia, for which web-based information was available, had some elements where they were more mature than other Australian jurisdictions. For some elements, maturity ranked equivalent to the BC CCSP, but most Australian jurisdictions were less mature. There was only one element where a single Australian jurisdiction ranked higher than the BC program in maturity. Legacy mine policies, programs, priorities and funding information via departmental websites are easier to find in some jurisdictions, indicating progression toward greater transparency and more mature programs. A systematic approach to monitoring and evaluating abandoned mines programs is essential for accountability as it can demonstrate liability reduction over time and continual improvement. Principal component analysis of the variation of Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Mn, and Cr in a control group of 96 samples of surface ironstone from the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia, was used to derive a simple graphical method, based on only Cu, Ni, and Cr, for discriminating between massive nickel gossans and other ironstones.When the graph was tested by plotting 400 control samples, it failed to correctly classify only nine out of 176 gossans and 11 out of 224 other ironstones.

Trends in Test Filtration to Respond to Decreasing Sample Size There has been a steady decline in the quantity of samples available for testwork when developing new mining processes due to the maturing mining technology and the increasing costs of pilot testing. Larox, a supplier of filtration equipment and its co-operation partner Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) have been actively developing new equipment, testing methodologies and tools to plan test campaigns with the objective of being able to determine the optimum filtration technology and the parameters for sizing full scale equipment with a minimum sample size. With smaller sample sizes, the test scale diminishes from pilot scale to bench scale, and the small equipment size has implications for scale-up. Redesigning the equipment to simulate full scale equipment rather than to match filtration theory has led to some interesting developments. Comparisons between bench scale equipment and production units help identify the limitations of bench scale testing. The nature of filtration is such that it is unreliable to estimate filterability theoretically, and different testing methodologies have been investigated to be able to test the feasibility of filtration from samples as small as few grams. While not optimising the filtration technology, these methodologies provide an adequate level of accuracy for scoping studies. Together with improvements in equipment, a software tool has been developed to reduce the number of tests necessary to optimise filtration technology and parameters for sizing.

Iron ore is AustraliaÆs largest commodity export and is vitally important to AustraliaÆs current and future prosperity. However, while major expansions are currently in progress to satisfy demand, the industry is also undergoing major transformations. Reserves of traditional high-grade Brockman ores that have underpinned the Australian iron ore industry since its inception are slowly being depleted and alternative ore types such as Marra Mamba bedded iron deposits, Yandi and Pannawonica channel iron deposits and magnetite deposits are now being developed. However, the impurity levels in some of these alternative ores are higher and they require blending and/or upgrading as well as an advanced knowledge of their downstream processing characteristics to facilitate cost-effective utilisation by overseas customers. The research challenge is to use advanced techniques for mineral exploration, ore characterisation, mineral beneficiation, agglomeration and sustainable processing to identify and develop innovative and breakthrough options for locating, unlocking and enhancing the value of AustraliaÆs iron ore resources. Furthermore, to sustain the steel industry and hence secure the demand for iron ore, there is a growing need to enhance the environmental and business performance of the industry through reductions in wastes and emissions. Therefore, cost-effective breakthrough and enabling technologies that massively cut waste generation, CO2 emissions and water consumption are also being developed. These include the use of renewable fuels and reductants, waste heat recovery and conversion of by-product slag into a saleable substitute for Portland cement. People in economically developed societies demonstrate inherent human care for Earth and want to stop pollution. Yet efforts to clean Earth seem bogged in confusion from wildly contradictory and alarmist predictions of æclimate crisisÆ. Supposed experts openly disagree yet weÆre told thereÆs universal agreement humans are causing æthe end of life as we know itÆ. The turmoil combines with peopleÆs feelings of fear, guilt, anger, hopelessness and even resignation and apathy to trigger æclimate alarmÆ. The paper enables people to rediscover clarity, hope and support for Earth by understanding how climate alarm and confusion were created and how they actually increase pollution. Many people seem to think global warming is as serious as pollution and worry that questioning alarm will enable pollution. Yet theyÆre different. We need be even more concerned about climate alarm because history shows repeatedly that when buried by ignorance and panic real problems grow overwhelming. Environmental credibility is endangered by confused politicians and sensationalist media. When weÆre willing to re-evaluate what weÆve been told we replace fear and confusion with facts and freedom to identify opportunities. Combining this with practical understanding of human behaviour and leadership enables opportunities to be identified and action taken. The paper shows how confident, informed leadership leads and supports higher productivity and effective care for the natural environment.

The main orebody of the Bodangora mine is a metalliferous quartz reef within a major fault plane in the strongly folded and faulted volcanic rocks of the Ordovician-Silurian Oakdale Formation. The similarity of the type of mineralization to that of other pyrometasomatic deposits in this area suggests that the mineralizing fluids originated in the nearby Wuuluman Granite.The associated Mitchell's Creek West or Dick's reef is discussed briefly.

The notes from which this paper has been prepared were set down at the time of the author's departure from Australia in 1935. Mr. Frank Forman, Government Geologist of Western Australia, who has very kindly read the paper in manuscript, affirms that the views here set forth are now accepted by most geologists. Thus, Forman's recent presidential address before the Royal Society of Western Australia (1937) mentions sediments in the Kalgoorlie Series "including banded jaspers and jaspilites."While it may, therefore, be superfluous to belabour the question further at this time, Mr. Forman has encouraged the author to publish this paper as a summary or both past and present views.To those specially interested in the subject of the paper, a study of pertinent Plates attached to Western Australian Geological Survey Bulletin No. 71, 1917, is suggested.The type of rock which is variously called "jasper bar," jaspilite, or "ferruginous quartzite" is familiar to all mining men who have worked in the West Australian goldfields.In its typical form it is a "striped" rock consisting of alternate layers of white or pinkish silica with red to brown bands of iron-bearing silica.In the course of geological work in many parts of Western Australia I studied exposures of jasper bar and was repeatedly impressed with the similarity of much of the material to the sedimentary "banded iron formation" of Canada. It was, therefore, a surprise to learn that the jasper bars were not generally regarded in Australia as sedimentary horizons. Codelco’s Salvador Project has been operating a block/panel caving mine for more than 50 years. This underground mining method dynamically mixes the ore and dilution. As a result, forecasting grades is difficult and achieving 100 per cent extraction of the reserves is practically impossible. A substantial volume of the ore mixed with dilution becomes remnant ore and remains to be subsequently extracted.A potential open pit mine is under evaluation at Codelco’s Salvador Project, which includes the extraction of remnant ore post-block caving extraction. An effective methodology has been implemented to estimate what is left behind once the underground mine has closed. A new mixing method using the Cellular Automata (Alfaro and Saavedra, 2004) approach has been used to allow estimation of the remnant ore with a sufficient level of confidence to be included as part of the open pit reserve.A remnant block model is created using elements such as in situ block model, drawpoint layouts, historical production records and the drawpoint extraction. Using this information, simulations of the extraction of the mine by month from 1959 to 2019 were completed, using different mixing scenarios and trying to replicate the tonnage and grade extracted.Finally, the remnant block model is categorised using a score card with four inputs to assess the risk of the estimation of this material into a category class (measured, indicated and inferred).CITATION:Villa, D and Farías, F, 2016. The alluvial gold industry of New Zealand is based on the placer deposits in Otago and on the West Coast. Production from these since discovery in the 1850s has been an estimated 480 t (15 Moz) of gold. Annual output has expanded continuously since 1980 and is expected to be over 2 t of gold for 1989. Following a historical review, the characteristics of typical operations, which use hydraulic excavators and mobile trommel units are discussed. Descriptions are then given of alluvial activities in Otago and on the West Coast.

It is not the primary object of this paper to treat with the scheme of prospecting in detail, but it is considered that a brief description of the broad lines is necessary so that the significance of the points to be discussed later may be appreciated.The finding of payable gold reefs on the Bendigo field resolves itself into a two-fold problem, firstly the location of quartz bodies, and secondly the location of gold shoots in such bodies. The country rock of the field has been folded and faulted, and the occurrence of known reefs is associated with the fold axes and the faulting. The "lines" of the field are the anticlinal axes, and practically all known reefs are at or near centre country. Very little work has been done on the synclines, which may have some potential value.Quartz has been introduced along the fracture systems, and gives rise to the three main types of reef met with on the field, namely, the "back," which is similar to a bedded quartz reef and is formed along a bedding plane fault; the "saddle," which forms at the crest of the anticline and has the typical shape from which it takes its name; and "spurs," which are irregular masses of quartz, making off reefs of the first two types.As the fracturing throughout the field is widespread and fairly intense, the first problem, that of finqing quartz, is comparatively simple, and any regular system of blocking out the ground will be productive of quartz bodies.*Field Superintendent, Bendigo Mines Ltd. The use of carbide tipped integral drill steels and detachable bits is discussed in relation to the means of drilling or cutting employed. It is stressed that only by correct use can the full value of these tools be realised.Factors affecting carbide quality, the design of shanking steels and the requirements and techniques of brazing in inserts are considered.It is essential that the brazed jointing between carbide and steel be strong but ductile. The methods used for the manufacture of carbide tipped tools are briefly outlined.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years the application of tungsten carbide to various mining tools in the mining industry, has developed to the stage where it is now regarded as an essential item in the production of coal and metal ores. In fact it is claimed that certain mining operations would not be possible if it were not for the benefits obtainable from the characteristic properties of tungsten carbide. The advantages of this hardmetal have, to some extent, influenced manufacturers to revise design specifiations of some machines, while againsome machines have actually been designed with tungsten carbide as their basic medium for operation.In general the applications fall into the following three categories:(a) Drilling hard rock by percussive means.(b) Drilling soft rock and coal by rotary means.(c) Coal cuttingThis paper is concerned with tungsten carbide tools associated with these three activities in Australia, the effectiveness of their application and significant points in their design and manufacture.

No iron ore deposits were reported before 1961 from the Hamersley Ranges, Western Australia, although low-grade bedded iron formations, associated with ferruginous jaspers and cherts, were known to occur in the local Nullagine Series of Precambrian age.In January-March 1961 preliminary investigations in the area drained by the Turner River, Duck Creek and Serpentine Creek revealed the presence of over 1000 million tons of dense botryoidal or pisolitic limonite, forming flat-lying orebodies with 50-57 per cent iron.Large bedded hematitic orebodies were also discovered in the same area in August-October 1961. These have a porous, biscuity texture and an iron content of 60-61 per cent. They occur at a welldefined stratigraphic level (Brockman Iron Formation), normally in synclines where they have been upgraded by circulating meteoric waters during an old cycle erosion.In 1962 systematic geological studies and mapping, together with sampling and scout drilling, indicated larger reserves of biscuity hematitic ore and led to the discovery of massive hematite deposits at Mt. Tom Price. These were extensively drilled in 1963, proving the persistence of' high-grade mineralisation to a depth of 200 ft and over.To date the total indicated reserves of the Hamersley deposits, within the area held by Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, are of the order of 4960 million tons and thus rank among the more important of the world. The reserves are composed of 600 million tons of bedded dense hematite ore with 64-66 per cent iron, 2900 million tons of bedded biscuity hematite-limonite with 60-61 per cent iron, 1360 million tons of limonite (goethite) ranging in grade from 50 to 57 per cent, and 100 million tons of canga (conglomerate) iron ore containing 53-63 per cent iron. In all cases harmful impurities are comparatively low.

Uranium ore at Sleisbeck, N.T., occurs as lenticular bodies associated with zones of bleached carbonized schists lying between walls of closely folded quartzite. The ore consists mainly of uranium micas with Borne pitchblende.INTRODUCTIONThe Sleisbeck uranium prospect is about 70 miles E. of Pine Creek, and 160 miles S.E. of Darwin (Fig. 1). The prospect consists of a well-defined, E.-W. trending line of hills, about I! miles long. The line is composed of 3 major hills called the Eastern, Central and Western hills, with minor interconnecting hills and outcrops (Fig. 2).

Owing to improvements in computer capacity, it is now possible to undertake fully coupled or partially coupled, three-dimensional (3D) hydromechanical Finite Element (FE) simulation of mines, including explicit representations of large numbers of discontinuities. The analysis requires fewer assumptions than uncoupled analysis or two-dimensional (2D) analysis, but may require a change in how hydrological data is collected. The way hydrological data is incorporated in stability assessment and the approach to uncertainty in hydrological information also requires discussion. The current procedures for this type of analysis are discussed, along with some practical difficulties and teachings from early applications. A work flow for integration of 3D hydromechanical modelling with pit planning and some considerations for the management of uncertain data are also proposed.

The paper deals with the metallographic tudy of heat treated chromite and chromite-coke composite briquettes. The briquettes, prepared from chromite concentrate of Orissa Mines using molasses-lime, dextrinelime and tamarind seed as binders, were subjected to different temperatures and examined metallographically. The change of phase with temperature was analysed by X-ray diffraction.

PACMANUS is an actively-forming seafloor analogue of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide orebodies, situated on the crest of an andesite-dacite-rhyodacite ridge overlying rifted older arc crust in a back-arc basin. Hydrothermal deposits range from Mn-oxide crusts to Cu-Zn-rich massive sulfide mounds and chimneys containing significant Au and Ag. Preliminary data suggest a substantial magmatic component to fluids and metal sources, and we speculate that PACMANUS is the cap to a complete hydrothermal system including subvolcanic and intrusive-related mineralisation.
