It is now recognised that rotary sample division is by far the best laboratory tool for extracting subsamples from a lot of material. In terms of sampling theory, rotary division, by virtue of the fact that it can extract many increments from the lot during the division process, radically reduces the variance due to distributional heterogeneity in the sample being divided. There are a number of occasions in sample preparation when it is necessary to extract a subsample of a target mass. To do this with rotary dividers taking a fixed fraction of the starting mass is a tedious task. In response to this problem, a variable split sample divider has been designed and built for the mineral industry. This paper discusses the utility of the device and presents test data showing that the machine is capable of making accurate mass split while overcoming segregation in the material being divided.

An 18-month project was undertaken to test the effectiveness of controlled daily tidal exchange augmented with hydrated lime treatment of surface waters as an approach for remediating a severe acid sulfate soil disturbance at East Trinity, Cairns, north Queensland. Actual acid sulfate soils were producing hazardous levels of acid and heavy metal contaminants and degrading approximately 720 of the 940 ha East Trinity property and the adjacent foreshores. A government-led research team established a series of research projects with the aim of characterising the site (soils, water, terrain) and testing the effect of the lime-assisted tidal exchange management strategy on soils, water, sediments and biota.

There is a significant amount of past evidence that links blasting and occurrences of slope failure. Particularly of great concern at Telfer Gold Mine is the effect of open pit blasting on the stability of the footwall slope above the underground portal and the stability of underground structures. For this reason, Newcrest Mining Ltd invited JKMRC to conduct necessary field measurements and numerical modelling with the following objectives:assess the dynamic stability of the footwall slope above the portal; assess the characteristics of current and future blasts in the open pit; and prepare open pit blasting guidelines that will minimise the detrimental effect of blasting on slope stability. To achieve these tasks it was necessary to develop a scaled distance attenuation curve for blast vibrations. In order to validate the developed vibration attenuation curves it was necessary to monitor vibrations from a production blast. Using JKMRC blast design software tools, the vibration of the production blast was also modelled from the blast design and vibration results from single hole blasts. The intention was, assuming that the observed and modelled vibrations were close in terms of frequency and amplitude, to use the software tools to model the vibrations of future blasts and assess their likely effect on slope stability. Numerical modelling of the dynamic stability of the footwall slope was done using the FLAC finite difference code and the UDEC distinct element code. The results of the numerical modelling and of the field measurements of the blast induced ground vibrations were combined into the blast design rules that relate distance between the slope and the blast, charge weight per delay and number of blasts necessary to cause failure of the slope.

The design of entrainment control processes in copper SX plants has been studied by use of models based on achievable plant performance. A number of alternatives have been assessed for their suitability in minimising the transfer of deleterious species from PLS into the electrolyte. The position of the wash (scrub) stage in the circuit, either before or after the loaded organic tank, has been the subject of considerable debate. The modelling shows that at ænormalÆ entrainment levels, the performance of the circuits are very similar. However at high entrainment levels the selection of the wash after the loaded organic storage has significantly lower transfer of contaminants. When considering the inclusion of a loaded organic coalescer the results of the modelling again show that the best circuit has the loaded organic storage/coalescer before the wash stage. The overall control of EW contaminants includes both a wash stage and an EW bleed flow. The total water use for these two flows is shown to go through an absolute minimum. The minimum flow rate is not greatly dependant on the total entrainment from the SX settlers. This can be a useful operating strategy if the quantity of high quality water for make up is limited by the capacity of the water treatment plant (eg RO). However the minimum cost option is to maximise the flow of water to the wash stage and minimise the EW bleed stream. The main driver for this is the cost of the cobalt sulphate contained in the electrolyte. Some results from the latest circuit modifications at the Nifty and Girilambone Copper Projects are presented to confirm the benefits of using both coalescing systems and a wash stage. The EW bleed has been reduced to a level that is less than the loss internally in the SX stage to stage entrainment. There has been an occasional need to add chloride to the EW to maintain sufficient concentration to act as a growth modifier.

The seismic velocities of intact rock are dependent on the applied stress. Unfortunately, the low susceptibility of seismic velocity to stress changes mean that changes in seismic velocity have to be measured extremely accurately to infer stress changes from them. Previously, it was thought that measurements of this accuracy could only be made with active sources or repeating earthquakes. In this paper, we show that the noise generated by mining activity can be used to construct virtual seismic signals with which we can measure changes in seismic velocity accurately enough to see the short- and long-term effects of a production blast on the surrounding medium. The time-dependent velocity variations achieved with this method show that the blast caused weakening of the rock mass for the rock within a radius of 200 m of the blast. The weakening is healed by confining stresses over a period of five days, after which permanent changes in the seismic velocity can be seen. The size and spatial distribution of the seismic velocity changes were compared to modelled changes in static volumetric stress, which supported the notion that seismic velocity changes can be used to measure the redistribution of stress after a blast. The results of this study indicate that this method can be a powerful tool to evaluate the evolution of stress in a mine at a relatively low cost as the data that it uses would normally be discarded.CITATION:Olivier, G, Lynch, R A and Brenguier, F, 2016. As the global mining industry continues to grapple with ‘black swans’ (high consequence / low frequency events) for health, safety and environmental losses, the focus is shifting from risk assessment of these events to risk management using selected purposeful controls that reduce the risk.Fundamental to critical control management (CCM) is a soundly based rationale for selecting the right controls for each and every risk. The approach should be based on a thorough understanding of the dynamics of the event: What causes it? How frequently will it occur? How likely is the consequence to be realised? This is typically done through a bowtie and methodical numerical risk analysis. Core to this step, then, is the structure and content of the bowtie; specifically, the analytic architecture that is used to construct the bowtie. Different architectures yield different constructions, and bowties are no different.Although bowties for operational health and safety (OHS) hazards appear to have a common architecture, they are not generic. It is important to stress that they contain site specific information, are prepared by site based operational teams, and vary from site to site to reflect each site’s operational conditions. They are often a product of the knowledge and understanding of the operational teams involved, may be prone to human error, and potentially miss latent hazards that may have been embedded early in the planning, design or construction phase of a mine or facility, or within the mining equipment. Overcoming these deficiencies through constant re-evaluation of the risks, and challenging the content on the bowtie will help to minimise the chance that something will be missed.This paper will cover key themes in bowtie architecture, introduce the concept of barrier models for high consequence event (HCE) bowties and present a relevant case study to illustrate the issues that determine quality in bowtie construction and critical control (barrier) selection and management.CITATION:Mills, R, Andrew, M and Reynolds, H, 2016. The four-dimensional (4D) network relaxation method, originally developed by Akaike in 1999, uses Lagrange relaxation and is known for its ability to include the price change and possible better outputs, but the computation time is huge. However, the continuous advancement in computer technologies allows the use of higher-speed computers with more memory capacity. Therefore, in this paper the authors have tried to implement the method with adjustments and improvements in its algorithm to suit the current computing system. As a result, the computation time has been drastically reduced and more constraints can be included, which makes the scheduling a more realistic one. The case study of an open pit gold mine with 129 500 blocks can be solved considering the capacity constraints in 71 seconds. In previous case studies, the mined ore had to be processed or disposed of immediately. Now, stockpiling can be included as another option. Since the details of the algorithm are still being improved, the computation time is a little longer than the previous cases without the stockpiling option. However, it is found that scheduling with the stockpiling option is possible in a reasonable time. In conclusion, the 4D network relaxation method has become more useful with advances in computer technologies and provides better results.

Economic mathematical methods have been developed and applied in the design, planning, development and managing stages in the mining industry. Economic and technological efficiency is achieved with the aid of a large range of probability models, which are used to enable decisions to be made progressively during the different stages. The entire operation is considered as a total system made up of sub- systems and the models representing these are consecutively interrelated with each other. Algorithms and programmes representing the economic mathematical models for all the stages involved were tested and were found to be applicable to the various important mines in the Donetsk basin. Currently, these models are accepted and widely used.

The pressure oxidation of molybdenite concentrates in acidic and alkaline media has been studied. The conditions of the selective oxidation of copper and iron sulphide minerals with a quantitative copper leaching by ferrous-ferric-sulphate solution have been found and explained from the point of view of electrochemical kinetics. The partly oxidised residue consisting of molybdenite and (hydro-) oxide of iron (III) was then decomposed by oxygen in alkaline media. Effects of the main parameters, such us oxygen pressure, leaching temperature, solid-liquid phase ratio, autoclave stirring speed as well as lixiviants nature on the molybdenite oxidation rate have been established.

Mexican epithermal deposits can be broadly grouped into two types based on their contained metals, distribution, associated igneous rocks and fluid inclusion compositions. Silver-gold deposits (e.g. Tayoltita) mostly occur in the western part of northern Mexico where host rocks consist of Eocene, intermediate composition volcanic and intrusive rocks; fluid inclusion studies indicate that mineralizing fluids were _10 eq. wt. % NaCl). The distribution of these two deposit types, crosscutting major major crustal sutures, and the close spatial-temporal relationships between mineralization and magmatism, together suggest that magmatic processes were more important in the formation of mineralizing solutions, as a source of both ligands and metals, than the segments of crust hosting deposits.

The biohydrometallurgy of gold is based on different processes which could be grouped into four main groups (Attia, Litchfield and Vaaler, 1985; Karavaiko et al, 1988; Groudev, 1990): 1. bacterial oxidation of gold-bearing sulphide minerals by chemolithotrophic bacteria to facilitate the subsequent chemical extraction of gold; 2. solubilisation of gold from oxide ores by means of heterotrophic bacteria; 3. recovery of gold from solutions by biosorption; and 4. microbial modifications of the surface of gold-bearing sulphide minerals to improve the subsequent gold concentration by physical dressing methods (eg flotation, oil agglomeration).

The studies of pulp electrochemical flotation separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite were made from the thermodynamics, mineral natural oxidation rate, property of mineral surface oxidised material and pulp electrochemical flotation tests. The results showed that although pyrite and arsenopyrite possessed similar thermodynamic stability, significant differences of two minerals were observed in natural oxidation rate, property of surface oxidised material and its influence to dixanthogen formation on the oxidised mineral surface. Based on the non-thermodynamic differences, the pulp electrochemical flotation technology was successfully used to separate arsenopyrite from pyrite in pilot test.

As a society, the retiring age of workers is increasing. Individuals are having to consider working to an older age (beyond 55 years), the reason being to æpay offÆ debt, maintain a quality of life or, as a bigger picture, because society simply cannot afford the aging population. The Government is encouraging and promoting those approaching retirement to work to an older age to alleviate the financial burden of an aging population. In a working context those aged 55 years and over accounted for ten per cent of the Australian workforce in 1998 with this age group expected to account for half of the growth in the workforce between now and 2016. For the 60 - 64 years which account for less than three per cent in 1998, this group is expected to account for 15 per cent of the growth in the same period. As a result of individuals who have worked all their lives and in some cases æphysically hardÆ, they do not fully enjoy their years of retirement as a time when they get to choose what they want to do rather than what they have to do. Of particular interest are the physical or health related conditions that individuals end up with and the restrictions that ensue resulting in an individual being incapacitated either physically or with respect to the state of their health.

The Broken Hill orebodies have 'traditionally been mined by cut and fill trethods. In the mid-1950's New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited experimented with sublevel longhole open stoping but did not pursue the method due to inefficient loading and poor fragmentation. The introduction of longhole open stoping in 1968 was a radical change and was necessary to enable the profitable extraction of lower grade orebodies and this method is now used for 55% of the production from The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines.

A computer simulation has been developed to model the flow of copper ore in Isa Mine. It simulates extraction of copper ore from the 1100 orebody by load-haul-dump (LHD) units to ore passes, haulage from chutes on 19 level by Rockflo trains to crusher bins, crushing and hoisting. It can assess in terms of the tonnage and head grade of ore hoisted, the effect of varying operating strategies, as well as measur- ing shortfalls in required capacities of any of the operations (extraction, hauling, crushing and hoisting). The simulation was designed as a modular, deterministic, steady-state model with parameter input allowing complete flexibility in its use. Queuing theory is used extensively to evaluate the effect of interference at potential bottlenecks. The model has been used to determine the effect on production of varying train sizes, maintenance policies on the haulage circuit, orepass capacities, and extraction operations.

The effect of various methods of conditioning on subsequent flotation performance was reviewed, where complex interactions involving attrition, aggregation, dispersion and surface cleaning were discussed. The present study focussed on the influences of standard laboratory cell conditioning, ultrasonic dispersion and high intensity conditioning on copper mineral flotation characteristics. The effect of substituting demineralised water for the WMC plant water was also examined. It was found that higher copper concentrate grades were often obtained using demineralised water, however the use of high intensity conditioning in mill water gave the highest copper recovery and highest flotation rate constant. This process should be considered if copper grade and recovery in this section of the plant drops, especially if the drop is due to surface oxidation of the copper minerals. Other methods of conditioning (cell and ultrasonic techniques) improved the rate of copper flotation above that obtained in the virtual absence of conditioning, showing the importance of conditioning on subsequent flotation operations.

The detonation pressure of ANFO can be significantly reduced by the addition of low density materials such as polystyrene, bagasse, swadust or perlite. Laboratory and field test results have shown that homogene- ous mixtures of these low density explosives can be produced in a bowl truck and loaded into a blasthole without segregation. The detonation pressure of the mixture can be altered to be more compatible with the material in which it is being used by varying the quantity of low density additive incorporated into the mixture. Field results have shown that these low density explosives can lead to significant cost savings without com- promising fragmentation or production.

While the potential for the discovery of new high grade resources exists, it is almost inevitable that the ore resources used to provide society's ongoing demand for primary metals will deteriorate over time as the higher grade reserves are exploited first and are progressively depleted. This deterioration in quality of metallic ore resources will bring about significant interactions with other resources such as energy and water, resulting in an increase in the amount of these resources required per unit of primary metal production. In this paper it is shown that as ores deteriorate in quality, the contributions of the mining and mineral processing stages to the life cycle-based embodied energy and water of primary metal production will increase significantly. Therefore efforts to reduce the impact of deteriorating ore resources on energy and water consumption should focus on these stages.   The results from life cycle assessments of the production of various metals by a number of different processing routes, particularly copper and to a lesser extent nickel, have been used to identify a number of opportunities and technologies for reducing the energy consumption in the mining and mineral processing stages, including: comminution, eg high pressure grinding rolls, stirred mills, ore sorting, preconcentration, advanced blasting techniques, advances in diesel technology for loading and hauling, alternative processing routes, eg heap leaching, in situ leaching, water treatment and re-use, water quality 'fit for purpose', dry processing, floating modules to reduce evaporation, and paste thickeners. All the above and existing developed flotation technologies can impact on the mineralogy of the concentrate supplied to the smelter. Removal of gangue minerals early on in processing may have further downstream process implications on fuel and water requirements. The above technologies are in various stages of development, with some more advanced than others. However, all can be expected to play their part in improving the sustainability of the Australian mining industry.

The paper addresses certain mining provisions of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 and the development of Mining agreements negotiated pursuant to Section 43 of the Act. Difficulties for miners and Land Councils alike arising out of the operation of the Land Rights Act will be discussed. Possible scenarios for the resolution of these difficulties will be proposed.
