CRAFTS,* Toronto, Canada (written discussion?).-During the forging of 9.2-in. shells -for the United States Army, it was noticed that better results were obtained in certain instances when test bars had been held sometime before pulling. An investigation, therefore, was made by our metallographer, Mr. F. M. Arnold, to determine the effect of seasoning. The forging consists of a single operation, piercing a solid cast blank. The test sections were cut from the walls by an oxyacetylene flame, one piece from the nose end and one from the base on the opposite side. The test pieces were not heat treated in any way and the tests and seasonings were carried on at normal atmospheric temperatures. The specifica-tions were as follows: Standard 2-in. test bar, 0.505 in. in diameter; elastic limit, over 19 long tons, or 42,500 lb.; ultimate stress, 39.6 to 49.1 long tons, or 87,500 to 110,000 lb. per sq. in.; elongation, over 13 per cent. As a preliminary test two heats were selected; BP555, which was tested and reported failed on elongation on Aug. 20; and B01771, which was tested and reported failed on Aug. 24. On Aug. 29, retests were cut and machined from the same shells and held till Sept. 3 (5 days) when they were pulled. Both sets of results are given below.

UNQUESTIONABLY, the outstanding feature of the piping for the sulphide plant is the large amount which had to be done in almost every size from instrument tubing to 84 in. OD pipe. In this article the piping will be considered under the main headings of Yard Piping and Building Piping. Tables I and II give data concerning the individual systems. In the case of yard piping the figures pertaining to lengths and weights are approximately correct; those for building piping are given only for the concentrator and smelter buildings where the amounts were the most extensive. Yard Piping The installation specifications for yard piping called for all sizes larger than 12 in. to have welded joints made with outside welding rings. This type of joint was selected over butt-welded joints because less time would be needed for lining up, damaged pipe ends would be less of a problem, and deflections up to 6° per joint could be made when necessary. These advantages were thought to outweigh the disadvantage of the greater amount of welding required. Yard piping in sizes of 3 to 12 in. was specified to have butt-welded joints made with inside welding rings which were intended to facilitate lining up and keep welding material out of the lines. Screwed connections were specified for sizes under 3 in. No protective coatings or wrappings were required on pipe to be buried because of the dry climate at Chuquicamata.

In the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute for the year 1878, in the account of the proceedings of the annual meeting in March of that year, when Mr. Bell read his paper On the Separation of Phosphorus from Pig-Iron, occurs the following statement, as part of the reported discussion of that paper: " Mr. Sidney Thomas stated that he had succeeded in effecting the almost complete removal of phosphorus in the Bessemer process. Experiments had been carried on at Blaenavon, with the co-operation of Mr. Martin, on quantities varying between 6 lbs. and 10 cwt., and some hundred analyses made by Mr. Gilchrist (who had the conduct of the experiments from the first) showing the removal of from 20 per cent. to 99.9 per cent. of phosphorus in the converter. He believed the practical difficulties in the way had been overcome, and that Cleveland pig might be made into good steel without any intermediate process. He hoped on a future occasion to lay full details before the Institute." I was present at that meeting, and I doubt if any one in the hall knew, either by sight or name, the young man who had dared to rise in that august body and claim that he had accomplished that after which the great metallurgists of Europe had been unsuccessfully striving ever since Mr. Bessemer's great discovery. INTRODUCTION Most works on flotation of ions and precipitates from solutions have been summarized recently (1-3). Flotation is more desirable than thickening or centrifuging because of higher recovery, productivity, simplicity of apparatus and better economics in general. Electrolytic flotation that utilizes gases is more favorable than other flotation processes because of the following: higher dispersity of gas bubbles, low coalescence of the bubbles, possibility of gradual regulation of the dispersity and other parameters of flotation (4-5). Flotation from solutions is mostly based on the use of alkaline reagents as precipitants (5). Flotation from acid solutions is less common. We used multicomponent solutions with more than 2-3 components, unlike previous research methods. Acidic flotation allows recirculation of solutions to previous operations such as leaching, etc. REAGENTS FOR PRECIPITATION Electroflotation was studied over a wide range of pH with the addition of ferrocyanide, oxyquinoline, hydroxide and carbonate precipitants. In recent works (1,2,6,7) on flotation of Ni, Cu, Zn from alkaline solutions, mostly ferrocyanides were applied. Our choice was oxyquinoline because of the following: 8-oxyquinoline is a nonspecific reagent for many metals, it is readily soluble in acids and alkalis, oxyquinolates of the studied metals are in soluble compounds, the reagent works over a wide range of pH, it is widely available, oxyquinolate precipitates are stable when exposed to air, are readily floatable, and are easily converted to oxides of the metals by sintering.

FERRITES are sintered metallic oxides of the spinel structure type1 and belong to the class of soft ferromagnetic materials. Similar to a ceramic, they can be formed and fired to a dense body, exhibiting a high electrical volume resistivity ranging from 102 to 102 ohm-cm as compared with 10-6 ohmcm for some of the metallic magnetic materials. This high resistivity, with resulting low eddy current losses, finds special application at high frequencies. The dispersive susceptibility of ferrites at microwave frequencies has also led to many applications in this field. Where high resistivity with high permeability is desirable, ferrites are used in low frequency applications. During the last few years ferrites exhibiting rectangular hysteresis loops have been developed for computer and magnetic memory systems. The general formula for ferrites is MeFe2O4 where Me is a divalent metal ion such as Ni, Zn, Mg, Mn, Cu, Cd, and Fe. Only two of these ferrites are nonferromagnetic, namely, those with Zn and Cd. Solid solutions can be formed between different ferrites, and it is of interest to note that solid solutions of a ferromagnetic ferrite with a nonferromagnetic ferrite yield much better magnetic materials than the basic ferrite body. In general, it can be said that the solid solution formation between ferrites has widened the field of ferrite synthesis and has led to methods of preparing materials with a large variety of magnetic properties.

Detailed underground geologic mapping at a scale of 1:1200 has been carried out at the Crown II Mine of Freeman United Coal Mining Co., which operates in the Herrin (No. 6) Coal Member. The roof sequence, upward from the coal, includes (1) soft, medium -to dark-gray shale; (2) hard, black, fissile shale; (3) argillaceous nodular- bedded limestone, and (4) fine-pined, shaly, water-bearing sandstone. The first unit is highly lenticular, and any or all may be missing at a given locality. The sandstone has a sheet facies and a channel facies. The Herrin Coal is eroded in channels near the Crown II Mine. Structural features mapped at Crown II include normal and strike-slip faults and limestone "bosses." Less stable roof and wet conditions are encountered where the limestone is thin or missing or where it is broken by natural fractures or by artificial openings that intersect the water-bearing strata above the limestone. Geologic mapping of the underground workings has allowed us to predict faults, fracture zones, and channels ahead of the face for this mine. Some lithologic and structural pattern apparently are random and cannot now be projected. Conventional exploratory drilling is entirely inadequate to map faults or lithology of the roof, but it does indicate the range of lithologic variability, which can be used to project needs for roof supports. Drilling also is useful in locating channels and in mapping regional variation in thickness and facies of the sandstone.

COULOMB' and Coulomb and Lacombe2,3 have recently discussed secondary recrystallization in soft iron (99.5 pct Fe). They found that the appearance of this phenomenon was dependent on both the presence of impurities and the thickness of sheet specimens. They concluded that impurities such as carbon, sulfur, and oxygen in the soft iron stabilized the matrix structure and allowed growth of a few grains of specific orientations. They also found that secondary recrystallization ceased when the final thickness was small and attributed this complete inhibition of growth in thin sheet to the restraining action of thermal grooves. When purer iron (99.99 pct Fe) was used, normal grain growth but not secondary recrystallization was obtained. On the other hand it is known that the necessary stabilization of the matrix structure for secondary recrystallization in high-purity silicon iron probably does not depend on impurities but more likely results from the specimen thickness effect of Beck et al.,4 according to evidence and ideas advanced by Walter and Dunn,5,6 and Detert.7 Furthermore, Mullins8 has indicated that if a gas-metal surface energy difference exists across a grain boundary equal to or greater than about 3 pct of the grain boundary energy, then such a grain boundary should not become stuck. In recent years there has been interest displayed in the precipitation phenomena occurring in austenitic alloys based on the binary Fe-Ni system.1'2 Previous communications have been extended covering the kinetics of clustering in the Fe-Ni-Ti system and the effect of cluster size on subsequent mechanical properties.3'4 To a great extent the question of coherency, which has a dominant role in determining the mechanical properties, is dictated by the degree of misfit between the precipitate and matrix. Thus, the change in lattice parameter of the matrix with composition is an important variable that should be examined. The lattice parameter, ao, of austenite was determined for Fe-29.75 Ni-1 to 6 Ti and Fe-27 Ni-1 to 10 Ti alloys in this study. The alloys used in this investigation were melted in a vacuum induction furnace from a starting stock of plast iron (99.95), electrolytic nickel (99.9), and ti- tanium sheet (99.5) in a MgO crucible. The alloy compositions in atomic percent are given in Table I and their relative position in the Fe-Ni-Ti ternary is indicated in Fig. 1. The chemical analyses were taken from the homogenized bulk materials treated in a manner related earlier.3 A diamond file was used to obtain powder from the bulk. The thermal expansion characteristics of aluminum alloys have been examined by several investigators, among whom may be mentioned Shakespear,' Schulz,2 Hidnert13 Hidnert and Sweeney4 and McCullough.' Shakespear compared the expansion of a series of aluminum alloys containing 14 per cent copper, with separate additions of about 1 per cent each of manganese, tin and zinc with that of pure copper. Schulz examined the expansion of aluminum and zinc and some aluminum-zinc alloys. Hidnert determined with a high degree of precision the exp:tnsion characteristics of pure aluminum, some aluminum-copper, aluminum-zinc, aluminum-silicon and some commercial alloys.' Hidnert and Sweeney examined the expansion characteristics of aluminum-beryllium alloys. McCullough, by an interferometer method, determined the expansivity of some aluminum-copper, aluminum-magnesium, aluminum-iron, aluminum-nickel, aluminum-silicon and aluminum-manganese alloys. Incidental to an investigation carried out during the past six years and leading to the development and exploit,ation of an aluminum piston alloy of relatively low thermal expansivity, the expansion characteristics of a wide variety of alloys were examined. Some of the data which might be of general interest are gathered in this paper. Experimental Procedure The apparatus used was essentially similar to those developed by the Bureau of Standards6 and Howard Scott,? with a few minor changes for expediency. Few men in the coal-mining industry have had experience in metal mining as well, as has Carroll A. Garner. He went to the Arizona copper country immediately after graduating from Penn State in mining engineering in 1910, and worked in the engineering departments of the Miami and Inspiration companies for two years. Then he came back to Penn State far a year as an instructor in mining engineering before embarking in the coal industry. He was born in Ashland, Pa., July 6, 1889, and reared there, in the heart of the anthracite district, which undoubtedly influenced his choice of a professional career. The green Pennsylvania hills were preferred to the Arizona cactus country. His first coal-mining job was with the Lehigh Valley Coal Co., of which he was division engineer at Hazleton when he joined the Institute in 1917. He gave that up to go to Ohio as head of the Fernwood Mining Co. in 1921, but even that was too far west and after two months he was back in Pennsylvania as assistant general manager of the company that has since monopolized his services the Jeddo Highland Coal Co. Since 1927 he has been vice-president in charge of operations of both the Jeddo-Highland and the Hazle Brook Coal Companies, Jeddo, Pa. Between them they normally produce about 1,500,000 tons of what Mr. Garner will readily admit is the very highest grade of anthracite, utilizing the services of some 2600 men.

THE first press was installed in June, 1910, and the second in March,1911. They produce 1,000 briquettes per hour, weighing 5 kg. (11.05 1b.) each, under a pressure of about 400 kg. per square centimeter (5,689.2 lb. per square inch). The chloride of magnesium is received from the potash mines at Hanover in tank cars in approximately a 35 per cent. solution. The quantity of solution added to the flue dust varies between 2 and 3 per cent., so that the briquettes contain about 1 per cent of MgCl2. To fresh dust as much as 10 per cent. of coke breeze may be added and bri¬quettes made that still have a crushing strength of from 25 to 30 kg. (377 to 426.6 lb. per square inch) after 36 hr., and 45 kg. (639.9 lb. per square inch) after six days. After having treated 140,000 tons of the material, the reports of the blast furnaces show that the briquettes improved the action of a furnace and produced less dust than did Minette ore. As much as 35 per cent. of briquettes is added to the furnace charge without bad effects on operations. The presence of chlorine did not produce any corrosion in the furnace, downtakes or other piping. The presence of a certain amount of chlorine in the dust reduces the amount of chloride of magnesium which it is necessary to add for briquetting.

Since the original paper, two methods have been introduced to compute the parameters of the three parameter size distribution equation: [ ] Both of them are based on graphical means, which are time-consuming and of little statistical significance. A program has been developed, using the Gauss-Newton method to compute by nonlinear regression analysis the parameters of the equation. Although the method is quite general in curve-fitting applications, it does not appear to be used in the field of size analysis, and a brief description is given. As applied here, the Gauss-Newton method involves the minimization of the least squares: [ ] where n is the number of sieves used. THE wide variation in tension and compression properties' which exist between the a,ß and ? phases of plutonium indicate that a study of the impact properties would give a greater insight into the variables affecting the mechanical properties and formability of plutonium. In tension the a phase is quite brittle with elongations less than 1 pct. The ß phase at normal test speeds is unusually ductile; elongations up to 621 pct have been obtained. However, the ß phase is quite sensitive to strain rate; elongations decrease rapidly as strain rate is increased. The y and 6 phases are less ductile than the ß phase, with the 5 phase the more ductile of the two. Neither are very sensitive to strain rate. Considering the brittle nature of a Pu in tension and compression and the strain rate sensitivity of ß -phase Pu, both unnotched Charpy specimens and standard V-notched Charpy specimens were fabricated for testing. In addition, since iron in amounts greater than 500 ppm forms a Pu-PlgFe eutectic network which inhibits microcracking in as-cast plutonium,' it was decided to prepare impact specimens with low and high iron contents. Chemical analysis and density data for the impact specimens are presented in Table I. A total of 55 impact specimens, 32 unnotched and 23 with the standard Charpy V-notch were tested at temperatures from —45' to 330°C. The test results for both unnotched and notched specimens are illustrated in Fig. 1.

Having shown1 the difficulty of assaying so-called cyanide bullion and the extreme variations often found in the results, an investigation was undertaken to discover, if possible, the causes of these variations by a series of tests upon the specific action of various metals during cupellation. Zinc.—In order to test the effect of zinc, 48 assays were made in sets of 6, 2 rows of 3. The charge for the middle cupels consisted of 500+ mg. Au, 1,125 mg. Ag, 10 mg. Cu. To the end cupels 50, 75, 100 and 125 mg. Zn were added, and a set of each proportion was cupelled with 4 and 8 grams Pb.
