Recently, Gilvarry1,2 has given a rigorous derivation of the proper distribution function for fragment size in single fracture, based on a closely defined physical model and deduced strictly by the laws of probability. The physical point of departure is Griffith's theory of brittle strength, identifying sub-microscopic flaws as the cause of the low strength of a solid in comparison with values implied by cohesive energies. Gilvarry and Bergstrom,4-7 and Gilvarry8 have compared the predictions of the theory with experiment, and have found excellent agreement, in general. The purpose of this communication is to sketch the extension of the theory to the case of comminution, and to indicate the applications to some examples in nature. The present treatment represents an amplification of a brief discussion appearing elsewhere. 9 Although the basic ideas of the Griffith theory are perfectly general for rupture of brittle solids, it was originally formulated with very brittle materials such as glass in mind. Moreover, Griffith's original experimental work was carried out on glass specimens. Recently, however, the theory has been extended by race" to apply directly to rocks. This extension makes the theory immediately applicable to the materials generally of interest from the standpoint of comminution. GENERAL CASE To obtain the distribution function for fragment size in single fracture, three assumptions are made, that: 1) Fracture proceeds by activation of preex-istent Griffith flaws in the volume, faces, and edges of a fragment; 2) the distributions of flaws of these three types are independent of each other; and 3) activated flaws of a particular type are distributed at random, individually and collectively, in the sense of Fry.11 The last assumption implies that each distribution is separately of Poisson type.

PETROLEUM'S importance in World War II can perhaps be better realized by the recitation of a few facts and figures: Gasoline needs in this war are already eighty times greater than in the last war. It takes nearly three pounds of gasoline to deliver one pound of bombs, filled with petroleum explosives, on an enemy objective. Every American soldier overseas requires an average of more than fifty gallons of petroleum products per week, with the oil used by Navy and supply ships and America's Allies boosting the consumption of oil per soldier to an even higher figure. Every oil well in the United States now must produce each day an average of four barrels of oil for war and combat jobs. More than fifty million gallons of gasoline, fuel oils, lubricants, and other petroleum products are now going directly to the fighting forces every day.

INTRODUCTION The Empress Nickel Mine is situated forty-eight kilometres west of Kadoma in the Zhombe Communal Land of Zimbabwe. The mine came into operation in late 1968 based on a proved and probable ore reserve of twenty million tonnes. The initial production rate was 55 000 tonnes per month from underground. This was boosted to 85 000 tonnes per month in mid 1970 when the opencast operation came into production. The mining method at Empress is sub-level open stoping with main haulages mined at ninety metre intervals and sub-levels at eighteen metres. The extremely wide ore body of up to one hundred metres in width has necessitated leaving extremely large rib pillars and sill pillars in position to maintain mine stability and to act as regional support of the hanging wall. In early 1976 the opencast operation had reached its final economic depth and it was then necessary to increase underground production to 85 000 tonnes per month. Since a large portion of the ore reserve remained in both rib and sill pillars, it was necessary to embark on a positive pillar recovery programme. For this reason it was decided to introduce a sandfilling programme for the mined-out stopes and a modified system of sub-level open stoping with post filling of the lower stopes. ORE BODY GEOLOGY AND GEOMETRY The Empress orebody outcrop has a strike length of nine hundred and fifty metres on a north west - south east axis. It is a steeply dipping (65' - 75') tabular orebody of gabbroic rock which has been extensively altered. THE 143d* meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held in New York, Feb. 19-22, 1934. It consisted of the annual business meeting, 45 technical sessions at which 217 papers were presented (more than ever before), two sessions of the Board of Directors, two meetings of Section delegates, three formal lectures, luncheon Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for members and guests, three group dinners and five group luncheons, eight committee meetings, the annual reception and dinner dance, an informal dance, a smoke-dinner and the annual meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary. Attendance showed an improvement over the previous year, as follows: Total, 1534 in 1934, and 1475 in 1933; dinner dance, 543 and 426; smoker-dinner, 425 and 394; informal dance, 295 and 250; women's registration, 160 and 133; luncheons, 1034 and 734. The Coal Division held a general session and three sessions on Coal classification. It also met jointly with the Committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence. At the general session, John B. Dilworth presented a report of the Committtee on Methods of Valuing Coal Proper- ties and R. H. Sweetser a report of the Committee on Evaluation of Coal for Blast-furnace Coke. C. B Huntress, Executive Secretary of the National Coal Association, was the principal speaker at a luncheon on Monday, at which Eli T. Conner, Chairman of the Division, presided H. N. Eavenson, newly elected President of the Institute, and Edward W Parker, Secretary-Treasurer, of the Anthracite Institute, also spoke. The Executive Committee of the Division met Tuesday afternoon. The Sectional Committee on Classification of Coal met on Thursday morning and the Technical Committees on Scientific and Use Classification of Coal on Thursday afternoon. The Committee on Mining Methods held two general sessions, one for presentation of a half-dozen interesting papers on strictly mining subjects, the other on Aerial Transportation. It also participated jointly in a session on ground movement and subsidence with the committee of that name and the Coal Division The Institute's Standing Committee on Aviation had its inception at the session on Aerial Transportation

The new Track Etch technique for uranium exploration has been utilized in several survey programs conducted during the last few years. The results from these programs have been very encouraging, and new uranium ore bodies have been discovered by using this new technique. The method is being used in several exploration programs in various locations around the world. This exploration technique utilizes small pieces of special radiation-sensitive plastic film to detect the presence of radon gas which is released by uranium ore bodies. Because of the selectivity and sensitivity of the technique, ore bodies not normally detected with other surface or airborne monitoring methods are found. Since no large equipment or special training of personnel is needed, the technique is easily used in field operations. The basis for the Track Etch method, its application in field exploration programs, and the results obtained to date in locating uranium ore bodies are discussed.

Circumstances determine whether it is better to make analyses in the field or in a permanent laboratory. The rubeanic acid test described in this article has been designed primarily for field use: it is simple and virtually foolproof, and it requires a minimum of field kit.* It is sensitive, easily detecting 4 ppm of readily extractable copper in a soil. This is by no means a quantitative test, but it is accurate enough to provide a valuable indicator of copper anomalous areas for both prospectors and field geologists. The easiest method for detecting metal deposits that do not produce visible float or stains is to make a simple chemical test for the metal in overlying soil, or in the silt of a stream that may have picked up metal farther upstream.

INTRODUCTION Kaolin clay, consisting largely of the mineral kaolinite, is widely used as a white pigment. In the United States, for instance, pigment kaolin production was nearly 6,000,000 tons in 1976 (1). Production for this year should be significantly above this level. Current prices for kaolinite 'pigments range from about $20.00/ ton to$260.00/tony,depending on the amount of processing needed to make the final product. Although much of this pigment kaolinite is used as an inert filler where product specifications are not very rigid, a large quantity of kaolinite is converted to products where very restrictive specifications exist. These specifications set severe limits on such properties as viscosity in a water suspension, particle size distribution, color, and brightness. This discussion will concentrate on methods available to improve the color and brightness of pigment kaolin and will review the advantages and problems associated with these various methods. The term "brightness" refers to the reflectance of the pigment to blue light (2). Since even the brightest commercial kaolins have a somewhat yellowish color, the blue reflectance (or brightness) is a reasonably good measure of their nearness to a perfectly white material. WHEN a single crystal is annealed following plastic deformation recrystallization usually occurs rather than polygonization. Consequently, re-crystallization has received the overwhelming amount of attention albeit the intrinsic mechanisms by which dislocations rearrange and annihilate one another are just as well revealed by crystal polygonization. It is the purpose of this note to demonstrate the usefulness of studying the polygonization process by means of an etch-pit technique in sodium chloride. Sodium chloride deforms easily (the slip system is of the [110], (110) type), readily cleaves on (100) planes, and can be chemically etched so as to reveal the intersection of dislocations with a free surface. Thus it is possible to observe the distribution of dislocations after a crystal has undergone a specific deformation and annealing cycle. Various phases of the polygonization process

MINING interests in the Western mountains are very seriously affected by the danger to property and life from destructive snowslides and avalanches. This is a danger which the miner has largely brought upon himself by an improvident stripping of the timber from the mountain slopes, and, therefore, he might be expected to take an interest in the reforestation of the areas thus devastated. A canvass was lately undertaken by the writer to ascertain approximately the extent of the damage suffered from this source, but the difficulty of obtaining reliable data has proved too great to permit, as yet, even an approximation. So much, however, is certain : that the loss of life is considerable, and that much property is destroyed almost every winter. True, neither the number of avalanches, nor their destructiveness, nor the amount of loss compares with what Switzerland experiences. This is due not only to the greater precipitousness of the Alps and to different climatic conditions, but also to the fact that in Switzerland a larger number of settlements is exposed to these dangers. A very complete and interesting official report on the very numerous and destructive avalanches occurring in Switzerland during the season of 1887-1888 has just been published as a contribution to the inquiry, whether and how these dangers can be averted. Peculiar weather-conditions, in addition to heavy falls of snow, were the reasons for the frequency of the phenomenon during that winter. This report records 1094 avalauches, by which 850 houses were destroyed or severely damaged; 84 persons and 752 cattle were buried; traffic on railroads and on highways was greatly interrupted, and the damage to personal property alone was valued at over $100,000. One of these snow-masses covered about half an acre, with a cone 250 feet in height. During the same year in Tyrol the number of avalanches was 3647. Mineral engineering student enrollment in U. S. and Canadian schools for 1955-1956 is 11,408, an increase of 11 pct more than last year. The undergraduate and graduate engineering students in both countries number 251,765, or 13 pct more than last year. These figures have been released by the American Society for Engineering Education. The largest increase in the undergraduate mineral engineering group in the U. S. is in ceramic engineering, with 676 students, or 31 pct more than last year. The next largest increase is in mining which shows a gain of 13.5 pct, compared with a gain of 13.1 pct in the total undergraduate enrollment in all engineering schools approved by the Engineers' Council for Professional Development. This figure is 190,355, which approaches the prewar figure. Metallurgical undergraduates increased 13 pct; geological, 5 pct; and petroleum, 2.5 pct. This year the figures for geophysics are combined with those for geological engineering, making a total of 1610 undergraduates, of which the geophysicists comprise about one seventh.

Bruckner's revolving cylinders for roasting ores, etc., are now used at a number of the mills in Colorado and New Mexico, for the purpose of roasting and chloridizing silver ores, with highly satisfactory results, even from those cylinders of small size, erected before the many improvements of recent date. AS examples of the larger improved cylinders, reference can be made to those erected at the Tennessee Reduction Works, Silver City, Grant County, New Mexico, and those which were built, in 1871, at the celebrated Caribou Silver Mill and Mines, Colorado, a mining enterprise which has proved so satisfactory as to have been lately sold to a Holland company for an enormous amount. These cylinders, as now constructed by Messrs. Lane & Bodley, of Cincinnati,,Ohio, are shown in Plate 111, in which Fig. I is an elevation in perspective, Fig. 2 a longitudinal, and Fig. 3 a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a sketch of a mill, with Bruckner's cylinder. The exterior of the cylinder is a shell of boiler iron, 12 feet long by 5 feet 6 inches in diameter. The ends are partially closed with similar material, leaving in the centre a circular opening about 2 feet in diameter, bounded by a flange projecting several inches. Upon one side is placed an opening closed by a hinged door. Upon the outside of the cylinder are bolted three bands, as shown in Fig. 1, in which the section of the first is square, and that of the third semi- . circular; the second, or middle band, is a strong spur gear. Passing through the cylinder are six pipes parallel to one another, in a plane at an angle of 15" to the axis of the cylinder; these pipes also lie in this plane at an angle of from 30" to 35' to the longitudinal .axis of the plane, as shown in Fig. 2, where the internal arrangement of the cylinder is seen, a perforated diaphragm being formed through part of the cylinder by means of perforated plates placed between

AT THE New York meeting of the Institute of Metals Division in February, 1927, Jeffries and Tarasov presented a paper on Tungsten and Thoria,1 in which the experimental facts were interpreted in accordance with the prevailing point of view that the thorium is present as the oxide, thoria. In discussing that paper the writer of this article stated that his own investigations, which had been unavailable to Messrs. Jeffries and Tarasov, showed that the so-called "thoriated" tungsten filament failed to disclose any sign of the oxide when subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis, but did give plenty of evidence of the presence of metallic thorium and, in certain cases, of a material believed to be an alloy of tungsten in thorium. Since these results were completely at variance with the results reported in the paper under discussion and with other papers which had preceded it from time to time in the past, it was felt that further discussion should be withheld until the new evidence could be presented adequately. Arrangements were therefore made to present that evidence at this meeting. MATERIAL EXAMINED The material examined was high-emission filament such as is used in radio tubes, supposed to contain about 0.75 per cent. thoria. The actual analysis was not stated. SCOPE OF THE INVESTIGATION The investigation was undertaken because of a feeling that the thorium present in filamentary material of this type exists as metallic thorium or as an alloy of thorium and tungsten and not as the oxide. Attention was therefore directed to determining: 1. The minimum amount of thoria detectible in a mechanical mixture of thoria powder and finely divided tungsten. 2. The amount of thoria detectible in the filament. 3. The condition of any thorium present in other form than as thoria. 4. The amount of thorium dissolved in the tungsten.

The aging characteristics of a titanium alloy containing 13 pct V, I1 pct Cr, and 4 pct A1 have been investigated by hardness measurements, X-ray diffraction, and metallography. The P phase decomposes into 0 + a, and 0 + a, + TiCr, above about 1050°F; below this temperature a transition phase, believed to be w, precipitates first, followed by a, and TiCr,. The observed hardening is attributed to these reactions. Cold working of solution-treated specimens accelerates hardening and raises the hardness level attained. A TTT diagram is proposed. NEW titanium-base alloys, designated as "all-beta," have recently been developed. These alloys contain large amounts of P-stabilizing elements such as molybdenum, chromium, or vanadium. When cooled from the solution temperature, they consist only of P; in particular, the martensitic a,' phase does not form.

The Mather mine of The Negaunee Mine Co. embraces nearly all of Sections 1 and 2, T47N, R27W. within the limits of the cities of Negaunee and Ishpeming on the Marquette iron range of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Operations of the Negaunee Mine Co., the stock of which is jointly owned by Bethlehem Steel Co. and The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., are under the direction of the latter company. The opening of the Mather mine was described by C. W. A1len. Mather "A" shaft was completed to an initial depth of 2352 ft in early 1943. The shaft capacity of over one million tons yearly is in prospect of being realized by orderly development and mining, and sinking of the second or "B" shaft then started in accordance with previous planning. Mather " B, " also a vertical shaft, was designed as a twin to Mather "A" shaft and the sinking technique developed at Mather "A" was utilized in "B" shaft operation.

For electrolytic recovery of silver from dilute aqueous solutions improved mass transfer is necessary to achieve favourable current efficiencies and high space-time yields. The many cell designs proposed for this application can be divided into two different groups: cells from which the silver must be redissolved and cells from which the deposit can be reclaimed as a metal. Introduction Electrolytic silver recovery methods have proven advantageous under technical and economic aspects for the treatment of rinse water, still rinses and spent silver solutions in the electroplating and surface finishing industry, of exhausted fixing baths from photographic processing, bleed electrolytes from silver refining processes and leach liquors. Examples of the compositions of typical dilute silver solutions are listed in Table I.

THE amount of gold that occurs in a ton of milling ore from most of the large-scale copper mines is so small that unusual care and special attention are necessary to recover it. In some cases the gold is not considered important enough to warrant daily assays of the various products. Considering the large tonnage of copper ores that are now concentrated by flotation, as computed in a recent review, the gross gold content is surprisingly large, probably amounting to over 10 million dollars per year in the United States. The indications are that in many of the copper-milling operations with gold content under $1 per ton, only 50 per cent. of the gold is recovered in the flotation concentrates. Lime is generally used as a depressant for pyrite in the flotation circuit. The authors have shown that high lime or a solution high in calcium ions is also a depressant for gold. Their experiments on several well-known ores show that by careful regulation of the alkalinity of the mill solutions, a higher flotation recovery of the gold can be obtained, together with equally good copper recovery in a good grade of copper concentrates. In cyanidation for the recovery of gold, the best accepted practice demands that the mill solutions be tested and regulated by simple chemical reactions at definite periods during treatment or with each change in the treatment. It is similarly important for the recovery of gold that the solution in the flotation circuit be analyzed for calcium ions at regular periods and at each step in the flotation practice. The lime should be added when and where needed and not in excessive amounts at the head of the mill.

There is a difference of opinion among engineers on the subject of depreciation in general, and still more on its application to any given case The committee which was appointed by the American Society of Civil Engineers to make a report on Valuation of Public Utilities, states "There is no subject connected with valuation about which there are more diverse views than those relating to depreciation;" and in the discussion which took place upon the presentation of the preliminary report of this committee in January, 1914, that part of the report dealing with depreciation called forth more discussion than any other. From this discussion it was evident that the word "depreciation" was not always used in the same sense, so it is quite important that some definition be adopted. As this paper relates to the proper method of treating depreciation by corporations or individuals operating oil properties, both of which must make a return of annual net income to the government in connection with the income tax, it will be in order to adopt the definition of the Internal Revenue Bureau. Under date of Mar. 29, 1910, the Commissioner of Internal Revenue of the Treasury Department stated "Deduction on account of depreciation of property must be based on lifetime of property, its cost, value and use." Again, on Form 1035, "Return of Annual Net Income" for miscellaneous corporations (Section 2, Act of Congress approved Oct. 3, 1913), a deduction from gross income is allowed for "Total amount of depreciation for the year." This item is defined more particularly as follows: "The amount claimed under Item No. 5 (b) for depreciation should be such an amount as measures the loss which the corporation actually sustains during the year in the value of buildings, machinery, and such other property as is subject to depreciation on account of wear and tear, exhaustion, or obsolescence. The amount taken credit for on this account in order to be allowable should be so entered on the books as to constitute a liability against the assets of the corporation. The amount claimed under this item should not cover losses in the value of stocks and bonds. Decrease in the book value of securities owned, so far as such decrease represents a decline in the actual value of such securities, should be deducted under item 5 (a) of the return. The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from Sept. 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library, freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

AS THE outstanding contribution of the Committee on Correlation of Research of the Institute of Metals Division for 1932, may be mentioned the publication of Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6637, entitled "Research Activities in the Mineral Industries of the United States." This circular was compiled by A. C. Fieldner and Alden H. Emery, members of the Committee, in cooperation with the Bureau, and comprises a285-page list of research problems reported to the Bureau as engaging the attention of the various mineral industries. To obtain this information questionnaires were sent to 106 governmental agencies, 338 trade and professional associations, 524 colleges and universities, 9 endowed research institutions, and 1847 private companies and consulting laboratories. In order that the returns should be as complete as possible, the original mailing list included names from which it was not expected much pertinent information would be obtained. However, the procedure was justified as significant returns were obtained from many of these.
