Broadly speaking, it may be said that the engineer has two major responsibilities: One is to recommend the choosing of proper machinery and equipment; the other, to assist in the simplification of design, determination of method, and advise about the most suitable material to be used. The products of powder metallurgy enter broadly into both these fields. The oil-cushion, self-lubricating bearing surface on a machine part makes for better machinery and factory equipment, often proves a life-saver in curing difficulties where bearings are overloaded or inaccessible for lubrication, or on installations that with normal practice constitute a problem entailing frequent repairs. On the other hand, other parts may require low porosity approaching solidity. In the second field, powder metallurgy provides many possibilities for improved products, improved performance, solving of technical problems, saving of weight, quiet operation, higher factors of safety, greater flexibility, attractive economies, and so on. Parts We of the automotive industries are making many powdered-metal war-machine parts, both ferrous and nonferrous, including gears, external and internal; ratchets, both external and internal; levers; pillow blocks; sliding blocks; cams; gibs; hubs with external and internal splines, and similar units. Powdered metals play an important part in our war work, as they did in peacetime in the manufacturing of passenger cars and trucks. The art of powder metallurgy is not a panacea. Although on certain parts such operations as turning, boring, facing, reaming, counterboring, milling, countersinking. chamfering, broaching, hobbing, profiling. trepanning, gear cutting, grinding, etc., can be eliminated, there will always be the need for machine tools. Advantages of Powder Metallurgy Simple machining operations often are eliminated by using powdered metal, and also many other intricate operations, some of which are of the type impossible to perform on the most modern production equipment; for instance, an external spline on a flange hub, where the spline must continue to the flange face and at full depth. Another important feature is that some of the machine parts may require a self-lubricating surface at one or more points; for example, proper lubrication of a sliding splined spool, while ordinarily most digcuit, is accomplished automatically with a self-lubricating powdered-metal bearing. Frequently machine parts are made with physical, mechanical and technological advantages unobtainable from cast or forged metals of similar analysis. Thus powder metallurgy offers the designing engineer broader latitude. Similarly, the engineer may take advantage of powder metallurgy in his teamwork with other departments. Another important advantage in powder metallurgy for machine parts is the relatively short time required for tool-up.

A major obstacle to the use of wetting agents in .secondary recovery by water flooding is the adsorption of the agents on the sand. As a result of adsorption, the surfactant always lags behind the floodwater front. Consideration of the chromatographic theory of adsorption indicates that the detergents will not lag as much if used in very high concentrations. An investigation was made of the possibility of using high concentrations economically by flowing slugs of wetting agents followed by normal flood water. The experiments consisted of adsorption studies on Alundum powder and Berea sandstone. Flow rests on a 12-in. Alundum core and 22-in. Berea core were used to determine rate of detergent movement. The results of the flow experiments indicate that the relative rate of surfactant advance is, indeed, sensitive to the concentration of the agent. A 10 per cent slug moved with a rate that war 78 to 95 per cent as fast as the rate of advance of the flood water. By contrast, one with 25 ppm (the number of parts of commercial detergent in a million parts of water on a weight basis) concentration moved less than one-fourth as fast as the flood water, and calculations indicate that in very long porous systems the rate of movement of the lower concentrations will be a small fraction of the rate of advance of the flood front. The results. of the adsorption studies were utilized to calculate the rate of advance of the detergent when only the initial concentration was known. The calculated rates showed substantial agreement with the experimental flow tests in the high concentration ranges. The adsorption results were also used to estimate the cost of the materials for a slug-type surfactant flood in the field. In addition to the faster rates of movement, the concentrated detergent slugs removed much more oil than the dilute solutions. However, the effectiveness of the slug process depends on many variables. The quantity of oil removed is increased markedly by increasing the flooding rate. The efficiency is also influenced by the type of crude, type of reservoir rock and initial water saturation. Therefore, a careful analysis of each reservoir system is required before the economic value of the process can be determined. INTRODUCTION It is well known that the displacement of oil by invading water during water flooding is far from complete. It is generally agreed that the unrecovered oil is retained in the porous medium by the capillary forces which may be relatively large compared to the forces generated by the flowing water. Therefore, it was logical that some early workers should turn to surface-active materials to reduce the capillary forces to facilitate the release of oil. As early as 1927,' a patent was granted for the use of surface-active materials in water flooding. In 1932, when soap solutions were passed through Bradford and Venango sands, it was reported that the results were inconclusive, erratic and that "further investigation is needed to determine exactly the function of the solution and to obtain a clearer insight into the phenomena involved."' Some of the modern scientific reports conclude with a similar statement,' showing that the lack of agreement on the mechanism of oil removal by wetting agents is still very widespread even though several comprehensive studies have been reported.'." Although there is a lack of agreement as to the general effectiveness of the detergents for water flooding, most investigators do agree that all of the common detergents are strongly adsorbed onto the solid surfaces of the reservoir. In the early calculations it appeared that all additives would be lost before reaching much of the formation area which contained the additional oil to be removed. Experiments indicated that if the usual small waterflood concentrations of wetting agents were used, the rate of advance of detergent through the formation would be only a small fraction of the rate of advance of the flood front. Indeed, some investigators4 felt that the use of wetting agents would never be economically feasible because of their adsorption. For example, DunningG estimated that the wetting agent in concentrations of 25 ppm, would advance only 0.05 times as fast as the flood front. Ojeda, et al,' found that a surfactant in a concentration of 10 ppm moved less than 0.01 times as fast as the flood front. It is significant, however, that both investigators found that increased concentrations of wetting agents moved faster, relative to the flood front, than solutions at the lower concentrations. Ojeda showed that an extrapolation of his data indicated a relative rate of 0.5 at 1 per cent concentration, while Dunning6 estimated a relative rate of 0.46 for a 1 per cent concentration. It was obvious that these concentrations could not be used for continuous injection because the cost of the injected detergent would far exceed the value of additional oil produced. THE Fall Meetings of the Institute of Metals Division and of the Iron and Steel Division were held in Cleveland from Tuesday, Oct. 20, to Thursday, Oct. 22, as a part of the National Metal Congress. The registration at the technical sessions was something over 450 and the attendance at the joint dinner of the two Divisions on Wednesday evening taxed the capacity of the dining room. The president of the British Institute of Metals, W. R. Barclay, consulting metallurgist to the Mond Nickel Co., Ltd.; of London, was in attendance at several of the technical sessions and was one of the after-dinner speakers at the banquet. He commented on the desirability of greater international amity and cooperation in these troubled times and of the role that technical societies, such as the A. I. M. E. and his own British Institute of Metals, can and indeed are playing in bringing this to pass, with their membership and contacts reaching to all parts of the world. He also referred to the new reciprocal membership arrangements in effect between the A.I.M.E. and the British Institute of Metals.

Phosphate rock is a natural rock containing one or more phosphate minerals usually calcium phosphate, of sufficient purity and quantity to permit its use, either directly or after beneficiation in the manufacture of commercial products.1 The principal minerals in phosphate rock have the apatite structure which may be represented by the type formula: Ca10(X2) (PO4)6 where X represents the hydroxyl group (OH), chlorine or fluorine, either singly or collectively. The calcium may be partly replaced by sodium, magnesium, and other positive ions such as manganese, strontium, lead, uranium, cerium, yttrium and other rare earths. The PO4 radical may be partly replaced by small quantities of UO4, AsO4, SiO4, CO3, SO4, or Vo4. A typical commercial rock is usually a calcium phosphate containing 3 to 4 pct fluorine, the major impurities being limonite or other iron oxides, clay, aluminum phosphates and silica as quartz sand. A little vanadium is present in most of the domestic rock deposits (except the Tennessee Brown Rock), according to Jacob, Hill, Marshall and Reynolds! A little uranium occurs in the Florida leached zone, as will be brought out later. The chemical analyses are reported as P205, or tricalcium phosphate Ca3(PO4)2, the latter often designated by the trade name BPL (bone phosphate of lime). Commercial analyses usually report iron and alumina as oxides, lime as CaO and silica or insoluble. Colony3 examined many samples of apatite, staffelite, dahlite and American phosphorites and concluded that all have identical X-ray diffraction patterns. The phosphates in the phosphate rock have very minute crystalline structures. The mineral apatite Ca3(F.Cl) (PO4) 3 is the principal primary source of the element phosphorus, and occurs widely distributed in igneous rocks but rarely in a minable mass. Only about 12 pct of the world production of phosphate rock comes from primary apatites; the remainder is derived from secondary phosphorites. These phosphorites have been formed by the alteration of sediments by solutions containing phosphoric acid. Such solutions have come from the weathering or leaching of igneous rock containing apatite, bone deposits of prehistoric animals, marine life or guano deposits. These phosphorites are mostly alterations of phosphatic limestones. The sedimentary phosphate deposits are of marine origin and may have been enriched by subsequent solution of the more soluble calcium carbonate by waters containing carbon dioxide, by physical concentration by wave action, and by redeposition of the dissolved phosphate ions. Uses of Phosphate Phosphorus is the spark of life and is the structure builder and one of the main elements of plant food (fertilizer). Without phosphorus, life cannot exist. A "complete" plant food[t] in addition to phosphorus compounds contains potash, which acts as a catalyst to convert nutrients to useful forms, nitrogen to supply the growth element and many minor elements. The cycle of supply of phosphorus is from the apatite to solution and soil, absorption of plant life, decay and return to the soil or by animal life feeding on the plants. DURING the past fourteen months, this committee has had under consideration and study the subject of the licensing or registration of engineers. The fifteen members of the committee as appointed by Council, were selected from thirteen states, viz., Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, Louisiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, California and Washington, and therefore represent practically all sections* of the United States, as well as mechanical, electrical, mining, hydraulic, municipal, sanitary, railway and' structural engineering, and also colleges of engineering. The first work of the committee was to investigate the general subject and to collect, so far as possible, avail¬able material bearing upon the subject in hand,. in-' eluding opinions from many engineers as to the need or desirability of legislation, as well as copies of all state laws passed and proposed, having to do with licensing or registration of engineers, architects and surveyor, This preliminary investigation disclosed that very pronounced views were held by engineers throughout the country, both for and against state licensing or registration. The general sentiment one year ago was more opposed to such measures than it is today. The older members of the profession did not as a rule favor licensing nor did they feel there was need for state regulation of engineering practice, while among the younger men there was a feeling that licensing or registration by the states would add prestige to professional engineers and in many ways benefit -the profession, as well as individual engineers.

A THOROUGHLY modern coal-handling system has been installed at the Pittsburgh Terminal R. R. & Coal Co.'s new No. 8 shaft, or Coverdale mine, about 11 mi. (17.7 km.) from Pittsburgh on a spur f the Montour R. R. The Pittsburgh seam, which is the one worked, is reached at a depth of 342 ft. (104 m.). Power is delivered to the mine at 22,000 volts over a transmission line of the bow-arrow type of construction. A private telephone line connecting the various mines and the main office in Pittsburgh is carried on the same poles. The high-tension line is brought to an outdoor, step-down, transformer substation, where three 833-kv.-a., single-phase, 60-cycle, oil-insulated, self-cooled transformers reduce the potential to 2300 volts. The transformers are protected by electrolytic, aluminum-cell lightning arresters, horn gaps, and choke coils. High and low-tension busses, together with fuses, choke coils and air-break horn-gap switches with their remote-control operating mechanism are mounted on a substantial structural-steel tower 25 ft. (7.6 m.) in height. MINE SUBSTATION The transformer substation is adjacent to a pressed-brick building that houses direct-current substation equipment together with switchboards, etc., for the control and distribution of power. This building also contains the hoist for the men and supplies.

New data on the distribution of silicon between slag and carbon-saturated iron at 1600Oand 1700OC are presented which, in combination with previously published data, permit the determination of silica activities over a broad range of compositions in the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 system. The distribution of silicon between graphite-saturated Fe-Si-C alloys and blast furnace-type slags in equilibrium with CO has been described in previous publications.1"3 In this past work the silica-silicon relation was established at temperatures of 1425" to 1'700°C for slags containing up to 20 pct A12O3. This paper presents the results of additional studies at 1600" and 1700° C which extend the silicon distribution data at these temperatures for CaO-A12O3-SiO, slags over a range from zero pct Al2O3 to saturation with Al2O3, or CaO.2Al2O3. The upper limit of SiO2 is set by the occurrence of Sic as a stable phase when the metal contains 23.0 or 23.7 pct Si at 1600" or 1700°C, respectively. The activity of silica over the expanded range is determined directly from the distribution data.3 Recently4-7 other investigators have studied the activities of SiO, and CaO, principally in the binary system, using different methods and obtaining somewhat different results. EXPERIMENTAL STUDY The experimental apparatus and procedure have been fully described in previous publications.1, 3 Six new series of experimental heats have been made, four at 1600° and two at 1700°C. Master slags of several fixed CaO/Al203 ratios were pre-melted in graphite crucibles, and these were used with additions of silica to prepare the initial slag for each experiment. Slag and metal were stirred at 100 rpm and CO was passed through the furnace at 150 cc per min. The initial sample was taken 1 hr after addition of slag at 1600°C or 1/2 hr after addition at 1700°C. The run was normally continued for 8 hr at 1600°C or 7 hr at 1700°C, and the final sample was taken at the end of this period. Changes in Si and SiO2 content indicate the direction of approach to equilibrium, and in a series of runs where the approach is from both sides this permits approximate location of the equilibrium line. Fig. 1 shows the results of such a series of 15 runs at 1600°C for slags of CaO/Al,O3 = 1.50 by weight. Figs. 2 and 3 record other series at 1600°C and Fig. 5 a series at 1700°C with fixed CaO/Al0 ratios. The results of the experiments at 162003°C have been reported in part in a preliminary note.3 In the experiments recorded in Figs. 4 and 6, the slags were saturated with A12O3 (or with CaO.2A12O3 within its field of stability) by suspending a pure alumina tube in the melt during the course of the run. The final slag analyses were used to establish the liquidus boundaries8 in the stability fields of CaO.2Al2O3 and of Al20,. ACTIVITY OF SILICA The free-energy change in the reaction has been calculated by Fulton and chipman2 from recent and trustworthy data including heats of formation, entropies, and heat capacities. The more recent determination by Olette of the high-temperature enthalpy of liquid silicon is in satisfactory agreement with the values used and therefore requires no revision of the result which is expressed in the equation: SiO2 (crist) + 2C (graph) = Si + 2CO(g.) [1] &F° = + 161,500 - 87.4T The standard state for silica is taken as pure cristobalite and that of Si as the pure liquid metal. Since the melts were made under 1 atm of CO and were graphite-saturated, the equilibrium constant for Eq. [I] reduces to K1 = asi /asio2. The value of this constant is 1.77 at 1600°C and 16.2 at 1700°C. Through K1, the activity of silica in the slag is directly related to the activity of silicon in the equilibrium metal.

Many investigations have been made on the effect of the variables of pressure, sintering temperature and sintering time on the physical and microstructural charactcristics of metal-powder compacts. Severa1 such investigations have indicatcd that pressure is the least important of these three factors in an attempt to secure a dense. strong compact by a simple coltl-pressing and sintering procedure. However, it was felt that a further study of the effect of pressure on pressed and sintered metal powder compacts might prove interesting, for the following reasons: In work done in the past on the effect of pressure, temperature. arid time, the, metal-powder compacts were subjected to long sintering periods, and temperatures right up to the melting point of the metal were applied. It was thought that pressure might exert a more profound effect under short-time simtering and within narrower ranges of temperature. such as normally would be applied in large-scale production of metal-powder parts. 2. It was hoped that something further might be learned of the nature of the bond in pressed and sintered metal-powder compacts. 3. It was thought that interesting infor mation concerning the work-hardening effect of pressure on the crystal structure. of sintered metal-powder compacts would be obtained. Procedure Rectangular bars, 2 by 1/2 by 1/4 in. were molded from the following metal powders: Atomizcd till powder, 325-mesh Atomized aluminum powder, 325-mesh Reduced copper powder, 100-mesh Electrolytic iron powder, 100-mesh Atomized 70-30 brass powder, l00-mesh The, till powder was molded at various pressures up to 40 tolls per sq. in. This was the maximum, because at higher molding pressures there was considerable extrusion of tin into the die wall, jamming the die plungers. The tin specimens were not -in tered, as this phase of the work was- done merely to see how much a very sold metal could be compressed. The aluminum powder was compressed at various pressures up to 50 lons per sq in. Higher pressures could not be used because of extrusion into the die wall The compacts were sintered one hour at 000 in pure dry hydrogen. The copper powder was molded at vari-ous pressures up to 96 tons per sq. in. One set was sintered at 750°C., another at 050 C. for one hour in pure dry hydrogen. The electrolytic iron powder was molded at various pressures up to 00 tons per sq. in. and sintered, one set at Soo°C and one set at 1300°C for one hour in pure dry hydrogen. Extra 325-mesh specimens were also prepared to study the effect of reduced particle size on grain structure. The brass powder was molded at various pressures up to 96 tolls per sq. in. and silltered for one hour. one set at 65o°C. and one set at 800°C, in pure dry hydrogeu.

THE activity of the principal oil fields of Rumania followed the same course as in 1939. It was marked by (1) collaboration between the various companies, particularly in exploiting oil at great depths with a view to rationalizing the exploitation and decreasing the difficulties inherent in very deep drilling; and (2) economy in the exploitation of the older pools in reducing to a minimum the cost of the extraction and working over of wells by the concentration of productive wells in groups. The pooling arrangement continued at Tintea as a measure of conservation, and exploitation of the unitized region went forward on the basis of the norms established in 1939. The same methods were applied in the fields of Liesti, Ceptura and Boldesti. The petroleum industry had some difficulty in providing the necessary material and the hands for work. Importation of material and machines from the United States was virtually stopped. Substitutes were provided from Germany but particularly useful were certain dispositions made by the local metallurgical industry. Despite the higher cost of the production of local material and machines, they were superior to the German product, the difference in quality justifying the higher price charged as the materials were found to be particularly adapted for the purposes of the petroleum industry. The cost of production was still further raised by the work that was imposed for national defense. The rise in costs per meter drilled was 50 per cent over those of 1939. According to bimonthly tables furnished by the Moniteur du Petrole Roumain, the deepest well completed in 1940 was an exploratory well, No. 201 of the Concordia company, drilled at Tintea and suspended at 3338 meters. This depth was reached toward the close of 1939 and the well was not deepened in 1940 became of large deviation from the vertical. The record for productive wells had been held by No. 429 at Tintea, drilled by Unirea to a depth of 3200 m., and in 1938 well No. 317 Cocorasti-Mislea, of the Colombia company, but these records were passed in 1940 by well No. 613 Liliesti of the Con-cordia company, which reached a depth of 3294 m. and had an initial production of 10 tons per day. In 1940, the same number of wells, II, had been drilled to a depth of over 3000 m. as in 1939. Five of these wells are at Tintea and six at Liliesti. Table I lists these very deep holes in the order of their depth. Using- galvanic cells of the form Sn(liq)/Sn" (LiCl-KC1-SnCl,)/Sn-Ag (alloy), measurements have been made of relative thermodynamic properties of the a, C, E, and liquid phases of the Ag-Sn alloy system. Partial heats of solution of the components in the liquid alloys lzave also been observed by direct cal-orimetric measurement in an isoperibol calorimeter. The thermodynanzic quantities are disczlssed in relation to structural and other properties and the existence of anomalous minor fluctuations in the partial heats and entropies of solution in liquid alloys is tentatively suggested. In the course of a recent electro motive-force study of the thermodynamic properties of Sn-Ag-Pd liquids,' some measurements were also performed on the Ag-Sn binary system. Most previous thermodynamic studies of this system have been concerned with the liquid state. Measurements confined to the limiting heat of solution of silver in liquid tin have been made by many calorimetric workers2 while high-temperature calorimetric measurements of the heats of formation of the full range of liquid alloys are reported in the early work of Kawakami~ (1323°K) and more recently by Wittig and Gehrin~(1248°K). Electromotive-force studies on liquid alloys have been made by Yanko, Drake, and Hovorka' (606" to 686°K; 86 to 99.4 at. pct Sn) and by Frantik and Mc Donald' (900°K; 30 to 90 at. pct Sn). The only known measurements on the solid state are of heats of formation of the a, £, and c phases; these values were obtained using tin-solution calorimetry, at 723"K, by Kleppa,~ whose investigation also yielded heats of formation of liquid alloys containing more than 64 at. pct Sn. The present experiments on the Ag-Sn alloys include a re-examination of the liquid phase and, because of the dearth of free-energy data for the solid state, attempted measurements on the a, c, and E phases. The principal new feature of electromotive-force results obtained for the liquid phase was an indication of anomalous fluctuations in the partial heats and entropies of solution of tin at certain compositions. However, since the values for these thermodynamic quantities were determined from the temperature coefficients of cell potentials, which are commonly subject to considerable error, confirmation by calorimetric measurements was considered desirable. A detailed investigation of the partial heats of solution of the components in the binary liquids was made using a liquid metal solution calorimeter. I) GALVANIC CELL STUDIES a) Experimental Details. Measurements were made, as a function of alloy composition and temperature, of the potentials of reversible galvanic cells of the form: ~n(liq)/~n++/~n-Ag (solid or liquid alloy) Details of the apparatus and experimental techniques have been given elsewhere.' so that a brief account will suffice here. Molten salt, 58 mole pct LiC1-42 mole pct KC1, containing small amounts (1 to 2 mole pct) of stannous chloride was used as the electrolyte. The salts were dehydrated by pre-electrolysis and vacuum -drying techniques. Cells were established under an argon atmosphere by immersing tin and alloy electrodes in the molten salt contained in a large silica tube, heated in a vertical resistance furnace. The tube was sealed at the top by a head plate provided with openings permitting the simultaneous insertion of six electrodes, a central thermocouple sheath, and connections to vacuum and argon lines. Temperatures were controlled to *0.2"C over prolonged periods, with maximum variation over the electrodes at any time of 0.l°C. Temperatures were measured with a standardized Pt/13 pct Rh-Pt couple. The electromotive force of this and the cell potentials were measured on a Cambridge Vernier potentiometer and short-period galvanometer. Alloys were prepared from Pass "S" tin (99.999 pct) and Johnson-Matthey high-purity silver (99.999 pct) by melting in evacuated silica capsules and quenching in cold water. For liquid phase experiments, pieces of the resulting alloys were remelted into prepared silica electrode units, while solid electrodes were prepared by remelting into 3-mm bore tubing, inserting a cleaned molybdenum lead wire, and quenching to produce uniform rods about 3 cm in length, with soundly attached leads. In all cases remelting was done under an argon atmosphere. The solid electrodes were subsequently annealed in evacu ated silica tubes for 14 days at about 20°C below the solidus and quenched. Analyses showed that these techniques produced uniform electrodes with no significant change from weighed out compositions. b) Results and Discussion. Measurements were made on about forty alloys in the solid and liquid states, over varying ranges of temperature between 550" and 1050°K. High-temperature creep experiments were carried out on indium, lead, and on binary substitutional alloys of In-Pb, In-Sn, In-TI, In-Cd, In-Hg, Pb-Bi, Pb-Sn, Pb-In, and Pb-Cd. The stress at which the power law creep equution breaks down was found to be much smaller for indium and lead than for metals with larger elastic moduli. The exponent over the stress in the power law creep equation was found to decrease upon alloying from values close to 4.5 to values near 3. THIS paper describes a set of high-temperature creep experiments made on high-purity lead and indium and on lead-rich and indium-rich single-phase binary alloys of various metals. These ex- periments were carried out to check two predictions of some creep equations derived by us"2 from a dislocation creep model due essentially to Mott. This model is shown in Fig. 1. Here dislocation loops are emitted from sources, not shown, situated on different slip planes. As the loops expand they come into each others' stress fields and are stopped. Activities, free energies, and heats and entropies of mixing of liquid Pb-Zn alloys have been obtained by the electrode-potential method between 400° and 650°C. The large positive deviations observed from Raoult's law are in agreement with the phase diagram, which indicates a wide immiscibility field. A vapor-pressure method was used to extend the activity measurements to 900°C, allowing the maximum of the immiscibility gap to be estimated by thermodynamic calculation. Data on the mono-tectic and eutectic points compare favorably with previously existing work. SEVERAL long-standing methods have been in use for the study of phase diagrams from measurement of the activities of the component metals.' The use of thermodynamic analysis for interpreting equilibria data is comparatively recent, however. Such analysis is usually undertaken by first evaluating the principal thermodynamic functions as, for example, the enthalpy, entropy, and free energy of the alloy constituents. These, in turn, quite often can be correlated with the interatomic potential energies and atomistics of the system, from which a clearer understanding of the causes leading to deviations from ideal behavior is gained. The present study of liquid Pb-Zn alloys is concerned with a determination of these quantities by electrode-potential and vapor-pressure measurements, using these values in calculations involving phase equilibria and to obtain a theoretical insight into an alloy system exhibiting strong positive deviations from ideal metallic solution. A considerable portion of the previously reported work is based on thermal analysis. Supplemented by optical studies of solid alloys, these techniques have revealed the essential nature of the immiscible mixtures that are formed. It is difficult, however, using the phase-

ASIDE from being the youngest of the Porphyries-from a producing, not a geologic standpoint-Andes probably presents the most finished piece of engineering, considering the enterprise as a whole: The various units of the mining and reduction works are well designed and efficiently operated, but that is true also at most of the other properties. Some mills or smelters may be superior to those at Andes; but as a complete mechanism for the exploitation of a big copper orebody, the Andes plant stands in a class by itself in many respects. Chuquicamata and Braden, as well as the properties in the United States, grew piecemeal. Capacities were increased and new plants were built as expansion progressed. Andes, on the other hand, existed on paper essentially as it is today before a start was made on actual construction of the reduction plant. More than $35,000,000 had been spent in developing and equipping the mine, and in building the concentrator and smelter, before the first ton of blister copper was produced on January 14, 1927. And another $12,500,000 was spent during the next two years in building the leaching plant and completing other construction. The orebody had been fairly well developed and tentative plans for the erection of reduction works had been made when the post-war depression descended on the copper industry and dictated deferment of the construction of a plant. This delay, however, gave the engineers opportunity to study the problems thoroughly in preparation for the design of the reduction works. The task was performed at Anaconda, Montana, under the direction of Frederick Laist, metallurgical manager, and Wilbur Jurden, chief designing engineer, of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company's staff. THE problem of handling the large quantities of water encountered in the Old Dominion mine presents many features of interest. In the present paper are discussed the probable sources of water, the pumping equipment, the increased flow into the mine in the early part of 1915, culminating in the flooding of the 18th and 16th levels in March of that year, and the difficulties that were met with during the high-water period. I. PRELIMINARY The Old Dominion mine, situated 1 mile north of the town of Globe, Ariz., has long been one of the prominent copper producers of the State, and until the opening up of the copper schist deposits in the neighboring mines of Miami, was responsible for the greater part of the copper output from the Globe district. As the gradual exhaustion of its orebodies near the surface led to the downward development of the mine, more water was encountered in the western portions directly underlying the dacite formation until the drainage problem became a serious factor in the operation of the mine and in the economical extraction of the ore. A heavy inrush of water on the 10th level of the mine in 1906, preceded by still earlier water difficulties, rendered imperative the immediate installation of a pumping equipment capable of handling large flows of water. While the Old Dominion has been recognized as a wet mine since its early clays and one in which the complete control of the water situation was of paramount importance in the development of the lower levels, it is chiefly in the last nine years, since the installation of the increased pumping equipment, that the mine has developed and handled large quantities of water.

WHEN semiconducting materials are made into doped crystals by the normal freezing method,&apos; they usually exhibit doping variations along the growth axis. If a) there is no dopant diffusion in the solid, b) the dopant is distributed uniformly in the melt, and c) the distribution coefficient, k, does not vary with composition, then the doping variation along the growth axis is represented by the equation: where C is the doping level in the solid at a point where a fraction g of the original liquid has frozen, and Co is the mean concentration. When the dopant is either a singly ionized shallow donor or shallow acceptor, C also represents the carrier concentration. Even though this equation accurately describes the dcping profiles of a large number of normal freeze systems, there are several special systems for which Eq. [I] does not apply. One such system is the horizontal Bridgman method for preparing oxygen-grown GaAs crystals using quartz vessels. Several workers2"* have shown that GaAs crystals grown by the horizontal Bridglnan method using quartz vessels are generally contaminated with silicon in concentrations in excess of 5 < 10lG atoms per cu cm. This contamination is ascribed to a reaction: occurring at the walls of the crystal-growth vessel which liberates silicon into the melt and Ga2O vapor. It has been shown4 that this reaction, and, hence, the silicon contamination, can be suppressed by the addition of oxygen to the crystal-growth apparatus. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a special apparatus capable of yielding single crystals of GaAs grown in the presence of oxygen and to describe both the kinetics of silicon suppression in this system and the relationship between the carrier concentration profile and the silicon concentration profile. EXPERIMENTAL-CRYSTAL GROWTH A schematic diagram of the apparatus used in the oxygen addition experiments is shown in Fig. 1. The most important features of this apparatus are: a) the use of a sand blasted quartz boat, h) a quartz rod of length 1, with a hole of cross section A, that is placed near the boat to limit the free space volume V, over the melt during the growth, and c) the temperature gradient at and near the solid-liquid interface. Sand blasting the boat is necessary to prevent wetting of the melt. The quartz rod retards the diffusion of the GazO vapor away from the melt to the colder portions of the ampoule. A crystal is prepared by first loading a 5.5-in. boat, which has been cleaned in aqua regia, with 40 g of 99.9999 pct Ga along with 1 to 8 mg of Ga203 powder. GazO3 is a convenient source of oxygen since it reacts with gallium at the melt temperature to form Ga20 vapor, the species which apparently controls the suppression of silicon contamination. The loaded boat, the quartz rod, and the 99.9999 pct As are placed in the ampoule as shown in Fig. 1. Generally, GaAs seeds were not used since most of the unseeded growths resulted in monocrys-tals. The ampoule is evacuated to 10-5 Torr and sealed off. The GaAs melt is synthesized by placing the ampoule into a two-zone horizontal Bridgman furnace. The two zones are separated by several sandwiched layers of -in. Fibre-Fax board drilled with holes slightly larger than the OD of the ampoule. This causes a very large temperature gradient between the two zones, which is necessary for single-crystal growth. The two-zone furnace is mounted on a stand fitted with a roller bearing which allows uniform motion of the furnace in a horizontal direction. A uniform velocity of the stand is achieved by the use of a windlass device which winds up a wire attached to the stand. Movement of the solid-liquid interface is accomplished by fixing the position of the ampoule and moving the stand. Growth rates investigated in this experiment were between 0.4 and 1.2 in. per hr.
