THE TRANSACTIONS of the Institute for the early years display but Little interest in physical metallurgy-indeed, it is striking how thoroughly process metallurgy absorbed attention until quite recent years. The first volume carries no article that can be strictly described as physical metallurgy, unless one on the rolling and hammering of ingots be doubtfully so described. Nor does the second volume contribute more the interest then was in mining, and in production methods, both ferrous and nonferrous, with much attention to the new methods of making steel. The third volume records papers on: the condition of carbon in gray and white iron, a paper devoted to chemical rather than microscopic analysis; the annealing of spiegeleisen; phosphorus and carbon in iron and steel, similarly chemical. Much attention was given, and continued to be given for years, to the manufacture and behavior of rails. The question of the nature of steel appeared early (Vol. 11)-What is Steel, by A. L. Holley-where arguments on nomenclature were already active; and Holley also bemoans, in modern spirit, the Inadequate Union of Engineering Science and Art; Pearse wrote on cast iron for guns (reflecting again the ironic beneficence of war in metallurgy), and said that Captain Walbach was the first to insist on chemical analysis of gun irons; he quotes Major Wade's study of comparative hardness, using penetration hardness measurements (Brinell was to come later), and quotes the important Reports on the Strength and Other Properties of Metals for Cannon, by H. C. Baird, Philadelphia, 1855, in which the advanced state of tensile testing at the time is shown. In the course of a recent investigation1 to develop a more satisfactory white-metal bearing alloy, a number of alloy systems were studied. The cadmium-nickel system showed characteristics desirable in a bearing alloy, and the system was therefore studied in some detail. Experimental Method Alloying cadmium with nickel offered no serious difficulty. After melting the cadmium, clean sheet nickel was added while the temperature was maintained at 500" to 600" C. A few crystals of ammonium chloride2 served to clean the nickel when the latter did not "wet" readily. In preparing the individual alloys for thermal and microscopic investigation, a "hardener" containing about 10 per cent nickel was used. Thermal Experiments and Apparatus Time-temperature cooling curves were made by standard methods. Globe electrolytic cadmium was added to the hardener to make a melt of the desired composition weighing between 100 and 200 grams. This charge was placed in a Pyrex test tube, 1 by 10 in., closed with a rubber stopper carrying a thermocouple sheath and quartz stirring rod. The assembly was lowered to a depth of about 4½ in. into an electric resistance pot furnace containing a No. 0000 clay-graphite crucible (to catch the melt in case of a break in the test tube). After the tube was clamped in this position, an asbestos-magnesia mixture was loosely packed in the furnace around the tube and a "halved" cover of transite placed on top. This left at least 5 in. of the test tube protruding from the furnace. When the alloy had melted, the thermocouple was adjusted so that the hot junction was l! in. from the bottom of the test tube. The melt was stirred thoroughly for several minutes to insure composition homogeneity and absence of thermal gradients.

Measures appropriate for the control of the silicosis hazard in mining cannot be formulated precisely, but sufficient knowledge1-l9 has accumulated during the past quarter century to permit the suggestion of useful, though partly empirical, rules for its alleviation. The industrial hygienist today recognizes that the peril incurred by the inhalation of harmful dust is a function of two variable factors—the degree of harmful exposure and the specific susceptibility of the exposed individual to pulmonary injury. Control of the danger arising out of prolonged contact with pernicious airborne particulate matter is consequently best exercised by influencing both of these recognized variables. Obviously the problem has two broad aspects—one, medical; the other within the province of the engineer. I—Factors Comprising Degree of Individual Susceptibility Thorough investigations conducted among miners who have labored for years in the presence of recognized silicosis hazards usually reveal an impressive difference in the injury incurred by men whose exposure to dust has been nearly identical. After a quarter century underground, one individual is short of breath and incapacitated with miners' complaint, while a fellow workman suffers no pulmonary embarrassment and is in good health. Physicians ascribe this oft-observed difference in reaction to individual susceptibility and express a universal regret when they deplore the fate that chose to make the predisposed youth a miner rather than a farmer. To trust the health of miners to fate at the present time is even more unfortunate, because many of the factors that influence man's susceptibility to dust are known, and can be accurately determined by competent medical methods. Among the most important factors comprising susceptibility to injury by dust are the anatomical peculiarities of the individual's respiratory mechanism, his physiological response to the inhalation of dust, his previous dust, exposure, the existence of pulmonary infections or other pathological processes in his lungs, his age,

The critical resolved shear stress of aCu-A1 single crystals has been investigated as a function of composition, testing temperature, and strain rate. The strength, and its temperature and strain rate dependency increase markedly with aluminum content. The solid solution strengthening at 4.2°K is much larger than at room temperature. The activation energy for the low temperature dislocation cutting process increases from about 0.17 ev for a 0.5 at. pct A1 alloy to about 0.50 ev for a 14 at. pct A1 alloy. This result is attributed to an increase in the width of extended dislocations due to the known decrease in the stacking fault energy. In addition, the activation volumes at 4.2 and 77°K decrease with aluminum additions. Concerning the solid solution strengthening in the 296° to 373°K range, no definite conclusions are reached, but it is suggested that subgrains and cutting of subgrains are important. In a previous paper,' the authors reported that adding aluminum to copper produces two types of strengthening: a yield point effect and an increase in the lower yield stress. This behavior is illustrated in Fig. 1 by shear stress-shear strain curves of furnace-cooled single crystals of pure copper and Cu-14 at. pct A1. The yield point effect, At, was thoroughly studied previously1 and shown to be associated with short-range order. The present paper reports an investigation of the lower-yield stress in aCu-A1 single crystals as a function of composition, testing temperature, and strain rate. At its meeting in the fall of 1937, the Executive Committee of the Coal Division considered the growing scarcity of young engineers entering coal mining with serious intentions. This scarcity was the cause of considerable alarm and a committee consisting of C. T. Hayden, E. A. Holbrook, C. E. Lawall and L. E. Young, with the writer as chairman, was appointed to gather factual data on the current trend. A questionnaire1 was designed and mailed to the heads of the 60 mineral technology schools listed by Prof. W. B. Plank in his article in September 1937.2 Replies were received from 46 institutions, not all from heads of coal-mining courses but all from men that at one time or another have had experience with some kind of coal-mining curricula and know current student impressions. Our committee is indebted to all of these gentlemen for their cooperation. Our committee hoped by this means to quickly reach the root of the trouble and make a set of comprehensive recommendations to the Coal Division for relieving the industry immediately from the growing dearth of youth who yearn for coal-mining careers, but the condition is more serious than at first diagnosed. We must now refer the question back to the Coal Division, with the recommendation that the Division get the industry's permission for still another major operation on its frame of mind. In addition to 10-year statistics on the first pay received by graduates in coal mining and other technical work, we requested enrollment data for 20 years from all schools with either mining engineering or mineral technology curricula. Nine leading questions were also plied, as shown in the Appendix. Every one of the answers was significant and interesting. Fortunately, we encountered positive frankness that was extremely helpful.

Y.-That this paper deals with a real problem is illustrated by a statement made to the speaker a few months ago by the manager of a silver-lead property: "Our ore contains 60 per cent. silica on which the smelters are penalizing us heavily, and they are not able to take all our stuff even then. We have simply got to find some method other than smelting for getting the silver and lead out of our ores. We have had experts down here and have investigated flotation, leaching and volatilization, of which processes the latter is by far the most promising. We are continuing investigation." I was somewhat concerned in certain chloride volatilization experiments which we carried on in Denver in 1903, working on a carload of ore from Butte. Now being connected with the Cottrell process, by which method the fumes will undoubtedly he recovered if they solve the volatilization problem, I have looked into the matter again, and believe it can be developed into a commercial process. On a laboratory scale, working With silver-lead ores, experimenters have obtained a volatilization of over 90 per cent. of the total values in 30 to 60 min, on quantities of 1 to 5 lb., using a roasting dish and a muffle. That looks very good, and would be entirely commercial. On attempting to duplicate these results in a reverberatory furnace, they found that it is more likely to take 8 hr. firing to yield 75 per cent. extraction, which is not commercial at all, as it requires too much time, labor, and fuel, and the whole process is too slow. Of course it can be done, because we have done it in the laboratory.

The time effect in reheating certain steels below the critical range is very marked. The increased toughness, shock-resisting power, and machinability of steel subjected to a long, high drawing temperature has been thoroughly demonstrated and is of practical importance, particularly in the manufacture of L'smokeless" rifle-barrel steel. The time effect in tempering is most important when a maximum drawing effect is desired, in which case the highest physical properties as well as ease of machining are important considerations. These are the conditions in drilling a rifle barrel. A hole, 0.30 in. in diameter and 24 in. long for the Springfield rifle, and 30 in. long for the Russian military rifle, has to be drilled in the heat-treated material. This barrel-drilling operation is probably the most difficult one in rifle manufacture, and anyone who has been connected with rifle manufacture knows how seriously production is affected when "hard" or non-uniform steel for barrels is encountered. The importance of high physical properties (tensile strength, toughness and resilience) in a rifle barrel is obvious. The physical properties of two different lots of barrel steel are given below. The first lot, No. 1, gave serious trouble in the drilling operation; the second gave no trouble at all. Residual deposits occur both as products of weathering and as products of hydrothermal decay. Products of Weathering That climatic conditions affect greatly both the rate and the results of weathering, is shown in temperate, polar, arid, and tropical regions, each of which will be considered separately. Weathering under Temperate Climates The decomposition of any rock is accomplished by the removal of the more soluble bases, and a concentration of the relatively insoluble oxides of iron, aluminum, and silicon. By reason of its somewhat greater solubility, silica is much more subject to removal than iron and alumina. The two important residual end products of weathering are sands and clays, the former consisting essentially of quartz, and the latter of kaolin and limonite.l When such deposits are formed in situ, the sands and clays are not separated, but remain as mixtures, which can be more or less perfectly separated by treatment with water. In such a separation, the ferric oxide or hydrate tends, by reason of its fine state of division, to remain with the clays and silts rather than the sands. While ferruginous sandstones are everywhere common, they are rarely rich enough in iron to become an ore without secondary concentration. Since the silica of these sandstones is completely crystalline quartz, it is much less liable to removal by solution than are the more soluble forms of partly amorphous chert and jasper, which have been removed on so large a scale from the Lake Superior iron formations.2 Moreover, the iron cement of sandstones, which constitutes the chief iron content of these rocks, is often a result of later infiltration, and not of original sedimentation. As THE time allotted is short, we can present only a general idea of the oil laws in the Latin-American republics, as a supplement to Bulletin 206 of the Department of the Interior compiled under the direction of J. W, Thompson of the Bureau of Mines and entitled "Petroleum Laws of All America." We shall not discuss the European colonies in Latin-America nor the island republics. As to the countries discussed, we shall attempt to give the main features of such special petroleum legislation as has been adopted prior to the early part of this year; where no special petroleum" laws exist, we must look to the mining codes for light on the petroleum policy. As the laws and regulations for the extraction of the metals are often difficult of application to, and are lacking in many essentials for, the petroleum industry, it is best for persons or companies desiring to enter, on . a large scale, into the petroleum exploration and development of countries not having special petroleum legislation, to obtain a concession contract from the executive of the country under consideration, and to have the concession approved by the congress. If this concession, which would then be a special law, contains nothing contrary to the constitution of that country and does not infringe on vested rights of third parties, it should be reasonably safe. If in such country there is some doubt as to whether the petroleum subsoil is owned by the nation or the private surface owner, only public lands should be covered with the concession. Guatemala is the only republic in the group that discriminates directly against foreigners. Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela require waivers of diplomatic protection.1 Colombia requires foreigners to agree to be bound by its alien law. , In addition,Mexico makes it unlawful for foreigners to acquire direct ownership of real estate, including mines, within a zone of 50 km. along the coasts and one of 100 km. along its land

Ore production from the property of the Miami Copper Co. began early in 1911. Until 1925 this ore came from the so-called high-grade orebodies, which contained a little over 2 per cent. copper. This ore was mined by the following methods: 1. Top slicing after mining the peaks by square setting, which produced 4,524,347 tons, including ore from square setting. 2. Shrinkage stoping with sublevel caving of the pillars, which produced 2,230,577 tons. 3. Undercut caving with hand tramming, which produced 15,427,672 tons. Estimating December tonnage, the total ore mined to the end of 1929 will amount to slightly more than 43,000,000 tons. The first method was described by E. G. Deane' and the second by D. B. Scott,' and the third, together with a general description of the mine, by J. H. Hensley, Jr.' The geology of the district has been worked out by Dr. F. L. Ransome.2 The author acknowledges also the assistance of R. W. Hughes, assistant mine superintendent, E. V. Graybeal, chief mine engineer, A. J. McDermid and S. R. Burdick, engineers of Miami Copper Co., Miami, Arizona. Factors Influencing Selection of Mining Methods The mining method described herein was selected primarily with a low mining cost in view and was developed to avoid as far as possible dilution of the already very low-grade ore. In 1924, with the exhaustion of the high-grade orebodies in sight, it was decided to develop the low-grade orebody, which at that time contained 36,000,000 tons of ore assaying 1.06 per cent. copper, and had an area of 50 acres with an average thickness of 206 ft. overlain by an average thickness of 320 ft. of barren capping.

WITH the exception of the work of Vogel,&apos; and Rolla and Iandelli, very little information has appeared in the literature on titanium binary systems with the rare earth elements. Rare-earth additions to titanium alloys may possibly parallel the beneficial effects on the physical properties of certain steels. Having this in mind, some knowledge of solubility limits and intermediate phases, if any, would be useful. An investigation of the titanium-rich Ti-Ce system was started. Alloy Preparation The iodide titanium from the New Jersey Zinc Co. and the cerium metal from the Institute for Atomic Research Ames Laboratory used in this work were supplied with the typical analysis shown —iodide titanium: 0.0065 pct Mn, 0.0022 pct Fe, 0.0015 pct Cu, and 0.0042 pct Pb; cerium metal: <0.01 pct Fe, <0.03 pct Si, <0.05 pct Ta, <0.02 pct Pr, <0.03 pct Ca, <0.02 pct Mg, with no trace of Nd, La, or Th. The cerium metal, stored in oil, was washed and scraped just before weighing into capped cups machined from iodide titanium. The cold hearth helium-arc furnace described by Schramm et al3 was used for melting. The alloy buttons from the arc-melted cup were cut in two, mounted, and examined. Homogeneous alloys were demounted and rolled to approximately 1/4-in.sq bars. Sections l/8 in. thick were cut from the bar to provide samples. The Ti-Ce alloy buttons analyzed for cerium were of the following composition: 0.19, 0.36, 0.48, 0.61, 1.15, 2.52, 3.06, 3.70, 4.30, 9.20, 14.26, and 18.50 wt pct. Nominal

The more stringent ventilation requirements of the 1969 Act have created a greater need for improved network analyses. More air is required at the last open crosscut (9000 cfm) and for the first time a minimum quantity is specified for the face (3000 cfm). Severe restrictions are placed on both belt and track haulage, and the intake air cannot contain more than 2 mg per cu m of respirable dust, to be reduced to 1 mg later. Larger tonnage and longer life mines are the trend today, necessitating multiple fans and shafts. Yet relatively little engineering goes into designing the mine ventilation system. In this paper a ventilation system is designed for a typical Pittsburgh block system, manual calculations are made and then checked by a computer solution. The computer is the ideal tool to try out proposed changes on paper to insure that the entire mine is properly ventilated and no costly adjustments need be made by dumping air. While it is theoretically possible to solve complex ventilation network problems by hand, it is not practical to do so because of the tremendous man-hours required and the many opportunities for errors. Thus the digital computer is indispensible to the ventilation engineer and newer improved ventilation programs are being developed to more realistically model mine ventilation networks. Suggested ventilation changes to comply with the new regulations are also critically evaluated.

There is only one way to transport natural gas and that is by pipe lines. In the past few years, these lines have been extended rapidly into areas which previously had been served mainly by solid and liquid fuels. In the subject given me, this extension is referred to as an invasion, which implies a rather forceful entry. Whether or not such an implication may be applied to recent natural-gas developments is unimportant. It is the fact of the extension, not its definition, which is important. For centuries, natural gas has been utilized for various purposes in many parts of the world. It was the foundation of fire worship at Baku. The Chinese used it for the evaporation of brine in salt manufacture. In our country, its history seemingly dates back 110 years to the vicinity of Fredonia, N. Y., where seepage gas was assembled and used for lighting purposes. A few years later, a %inch pipe was laid to a lighthouse on Lake Erie, and the early records of the Lighthouse Service tell of the difficulties surrounding this use. With the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania, there followed further development; the town of Titusville was piped with natural gas and, some few years later, gas was made available for manufacturing plants adjacent to the oil fields. Want of knowledge on the part of experts from abroad respecting the amalgamation-system, known as the Mexican or patio process, has been the cause in this country of trouble to many foreign mining companies. This process has not been looked upon by their managers as a satisfactory method of treating silver-ores, and they prefer to employ others, which, although more modern, and often more profitable in other countries, have not proved to be so under the exceptional conditions of this country, where labor is cheap and paid in silver, while fuel is very dear. The cause of this error of judgment is probably the inexact information which has been furnished by several authors respecting the economical results of the patio process. This treatment is not suitable for silver-ores of every kind. Simple sulphides of silver are best adapted to it, and, next to these, the combinations of complex sulphides, viz., pyrargyrite, polybasite, stephanite, proustite, etc. Chlorides, bromides and iodides of silver are considered rebellious ; argentiferous galena, blende, bournonite, as also argentiferous arsenical pyrites of iron and copper, are absolutelg unsuited to this treatment. Experience has proved that high-grade ores do not give as satisfactory results as those of mediurn grades, as, for instance, carrying from 1 to 2 kilos of silver per metrical ton. The patio process, as actually practiced in this district, comprises the following operations: 1. The ore is crushed in a dry state in a roller-mill, reducing it to pea-size, from which uniform samples, and, in consequence, correct assays, can be obtained. 2. It is then thrown into the arrastra, and pulverized with water, so fine that it will pass through an 80-mesh screen.

The Philippine Islands have produced no oil commercially; nevertheless, oil is known to be present at various places in the is1ands.l Although all attempts to produce oil commercially have failed, no intelligent, persistent exploration has been carried out. How can the petroleum resources of an entirely undeveloped area like the Philippines be estimated, where not even the areal extent of the various geologic formations is known? Obviously no calculated figure for assured future production can be derived. Yet a study of the evidence of the occurrence of petroleum, the character of the possible reservoir beds, the probable source rocks, the character and size of favorable structures, and the area over which petroleum-bearing rocks are known to occur, will throw some light on the question. The fact that rocks of the same geologic age and similar composition have been explored and are producing in Borneo, Sumatra, and Java to the south and in Formosa and Japan to the north also affect the problem, so that one can obtain some idea of the quantity of petroleum that may reasonably be expected from the Philippines. It is this measure of the possibilities rather than a definite calculation of petroleum reserves that is presented herewith. This paper will not attempt to describe, nor even to enumerate in detail, the occurrences of petroleum in the Philippines, as such data have already been published. IN a previous communication,l the quaternary system Ni-Cr-Ti-A1 was described in detail and it was shown how certain alloys used for high-temperature applications could be construed as consisting of Ni,Cr suitably modified by the addition of aluminum and titanium in relatively small amounts. With the correct aging treatment, the ordered face-centered-cubic Berthollide phase, y&apos;-Ni,Al, could be precipitated from the face-centered-cubic primary y-solid solution. By increasing the proportion of titanium with respect to aluminum, it was also possible to precipitate the very brittle hexagonal-close-packed Daltonide phase, ?-Ni,Ti. From the nature of the system it seems reasonable to expect the y and y&apos;-phases to take appreciable amounts of cobalt and iron into solid solution. In the case of the present investigation it was decided to confine the work to iron additions only. This element may be introduced in two quite distinct ways: 1) as a simple replacement for nickel; and 2) as a replacement for chromium, titanium, and aluminum. The second method of iron addition forms the basis of the present investigation, which is, in effect, a study of the pseudo-quaternary system Ni,Cr-NiPe-Ni,Ti-NLAl. For purposes of reference, Figs. 1, 2, and 3 have been included and illustrate the quaternary system Ni-Cr-Ti-A1 described in the previous paper along with sections through N&Cr-Ni,Ti-Ni,Al at 750" and 1000 "C respectively.
