In 1976, a decision was made to install a conveying system to transport ore 10.3 km (6.4 miles) from the new Eisenhower mine to Twin Buttes. The system, supplied and installed by Cable Belt Ltd., of England, represents a radical departure from conventional conveyor systems. The driving tension is applied through two endless wire ropes while the belt acts only as the carrying medium. Features of the system are a single 2240-kW (3000-hp) drive and a 60° angle bend. Construction was completed in two years and full production was attained alter several mouths operation.

IT is well known that the oxide of beryllium was identified as a new "earth" in 17971 and the metal first isolated in 18272. The history of the many difficulties encountered by early investigators, the laboratory achievements of Lebeau3, Fichter4 and Oesterheld5, and the eventual development of methods for commercial production are well covered in the literature, particularly in the authoritative published work of Siemens and Halske6 reviewing their comprehensive investigation of the element. Accordingly it has seemed desirable to restrict this paper to the properties and uses of beryllium and its alloys.

The Mercur Gold Mine is located 56 km (35 air miles) southwest of Salt Lake City in north central Utah; In July 1981 Getty Mining Company made the decision to put Mercur into production. The first gold bar was poured in April 1983. This paper provides details on: 1) the history of the camp, 2) past production, 3) geology of the deposit, 4) the exploration and development program, 5) ore reserve estimates, 6) detailed geologic pit mapping, 7) production blasthole sampling techniques and 8) the use of geostatistics (kriging) in handling assays and gold extractions to produce the required mill feed.

By 1968, Cyprus Pima was milling 34.5 kt /d (38,000 tpd) of copper ore using a conventional flowsheet consisting of three stages of crushing, rod milk and ball, mills. A 13.6 kt /d (15,000 tpd) expansion was put onstream late in 1971 using primary crushing, semiautogenous milk, and ball mills. Identical ore is treated in both concentrators. This paper shows the weight and life of each liner for each crusher and each mill over a four year period from 1974-1977. Media consumption is shown for the same period and a comparison is made between the two reduction methods.

THE oil-producing industry may logically be 'divided into four independent branches: (1) Acquisition of possible productive lands by lease, fee purchase, concession, or otherwise and the perfection of titles thereto. (2) Studies of the geology of the properties, leading to the location of exploratory wells. These involve reconnaissance and detailed surveys and the use of geophysical instruments, where conditions do not permit surface determination. (3) Drilling of exploratory or test holes and, later, exploitation wells. (4) Actual recovery of the oil from the wells by flowing, pumping, or other methods. These four divisions of the industry are unrelated in detail of accomplishment, but they are entirely complementary, one to the other, and must, in any efficient' organization, harmonize in their respective efforts toward the desired ultimate end. The relative order for the first two branches is not necessarily the proper one; in fact one should have knowledge of the favorable possibilities of a given property before it is acquired, and preferably, also, final opinions as to then proper location for an exploratory well, if such is justified in the light of

Detailed stratigraphic studies in the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa district have made it possible to map the folds and faults that controlled the deposition of the zinc-lead ore. Prospecting on the basis of this mapping and prospecting in lower zones that are potentially ore-bearing have led to discoveries of ore. GEOLOGIC studies for the Federal and State governments in the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa zinc-lead district were begun in 1835, and subsequent surveys were made in the three states at intervals until 1916, see Table I. The current study of the district, Fig. 1, by the U. S. Geological Survey was begun in 1942 in the hope that a systematic investigation would help increase production of zinc and lead, then in extremely short supply. Major emphasis of the USGS program was on detailed mapping of the geologic structure and ore deposits. Preliminary maps and reports covering localities of intensive mining activity have been published during the course of this study, Fig. 2. By 1950 the objectives of the study by the USGS were revised; 71/2-min quadrangles of relatively unprospected localities as well as intensively mined localities are now being mapped in Wisconsin. Since 1945 the investigation in Wisconsin has been made in cooperation with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, and since 1951 the geologic mapping of areas of particular interest in Iowa has been performed in cooperation with the Iowa Geological Survey. At intervals since 1943 the Illinois State Geological Survey has mapped the geologic structure and ore deposits of localities in the Illinois part of the mining district, see Fig. 2. Geology was applied by mining company personnel as early as 1853, but only sporadically, with periods of greater application between 1890 and 1925. Much of the so-called geologic work was in reality mining engineering. Since 1946 the major mining companies in the district have employed geologists who have successfully applied geologic techniques in the search for ore. History of Mining Occurrence of galena in the district was known as early as 1658 or 1659, when French explorers heard of lead mines that were apparently in the vicinity of Dubuque, Iowa. In 1690 a trading post was established near Dubuque to obtain galena. The first significant attempt at mining by white men took place in 1788 when the Indians granted to Julien Dubuque mining rights for 20 miles along the west side of the Mississippi River, including the vicinity of Dubuque, Iowa. By 1805 lead was being mined near Galena, Ill. In 1819 permanent settlement of the region was begun, and most of the important lead-producing areas had been found by 1830, see Fig. 3. Lead production in the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa district between 1830 and 1871 far exceeded that of any other district in the U. S.' Smithsonite was first mined in 1859, and sphalerite was mined as early as 1867. After 1873 the production of sphalerite exceeded that of smithsonite. In 1873 annual zinc production from the district first equaled lead production, and from then until 1893 production of zinc and lead was roughly the same. Since 1893 the ratio of zinc to lead mined has generally ranged between 5:l and 20:l. In 1942 the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa zinc-lead district ranked 14th among zinc-producing districts of the U. S. Soon after the search for uranium ores on the Colorado Plateau began in earnest, thousands of feet of drill core ranging from 1 1/8 to 2 1/8 in. diam became available for study. Although significant advances had been made in the technique of quantitative gamma-ray borehole logging, instrumentation was in the development stage, and complete reliance could not be placed on gamma-ray logs alone to interpret quantitatively the meaning of radioactivity in a drillhole. A method that would be faster than chemical analysis and still give reproducible and reliable results for various drill core sizes was desirable to provide additional information on the enormous footage of drill core being accumulated. A solid phosphor scintillation drill core scanner was designed and constructed. Basically the instrument was developed to measure radiation from a drill core which would not be clearly recorded by a gamma-ray logger using a Geiger tube as the sensitive element. Such data would be beneficial in constructing isorad maps to delineate ore-bearing zones. A calibration in the range 0.01 to 0.1 pct eU.,O, was provided; above 0.1 pct eU3O8 gamma-ray logs were available and were being used to calculate grade and tonnage of ore reserves. The core scanner, however, has been used to estimate equivalent uranium content of ore-grade materials containing as much as 2.2 pct eU3O8 with an accuracy of ± 10 pct, the sample being in the form of a BX drill core. Actually, an apparent calibration of eU3O8 vs counts per unit time is a straight line with a slope that is a function of the sensitive element and the geometry of the counting assembly. A true calibration that will show the expected departure from a straight line is due principally to the random nature of the pulse from a radiation source and the nonlinearity of the electron circuitry. Design and Construction: Three methods of detecting radioactivity were considered and applied in developing the core scanner now in use: 1) the Geiger tube, 2) liquid scintillation phosphors, and 3) solid scintillation phosphors. The desired sensitivity and long-term drift characteristics needed for this operation could be attained only by using solid scintillation phosphors. All three methods are discussed. Before scintillation counters were common, nine beta-gamma sensitive Geiger tubes 7/8 in. diam by 12 in. long were used, arranged to surround the drill core with tube axes parallel to the axis of the core. This arrangement of Geiger tubes was en- closed in a lead shield 1 in. thick, and provision was made to slide a 6-ft length of drill core manually into the counting chamber, one foot at a time. A count for each segment was taken with a scaler while the core remained stationary. The equivalent uranium content of the different sections of drill core could then be estimated with the aid of a calibration curve of counts per unit time vs percent equivalent uranium (eU). In rare cases the effects of the radioactivity concentrated in small areas within the core introduced errors in the readings made with the Geiger tube arrangement owing to the geometry of the measurement. The variability of counting rate due to a localized concentration of radioactivity in a spot in the wall of a drill core is illustrated in Fig. 1. This effect and the inherent low efficiency of the Geiger tube were considered major disadvantages of this counting arrangement. When liquid scintillation phosphors became available the core scanner in Fig. 2 was constructed to make a more accurate measurement of the equivalent uranium content of a sample. This instrument contains about 4 liters of liquid phosphor in a stainless steel coaxial cylinder 1 ft long, with inner and outer walls 0.060 in. and 0.125 in. thick, respectively. Four end-window type photomulti-plier tube with cathodes of 2 in. diam, immersed in the solution at right angles to the axis of the core, were used to observe light flashes in the phosphor. The liquid phosphor offered equal sensitivity to radiation originating at any point in the enclosure and represented geometrically the optimum in design. However, providing a semi-permanent leak-proof seal between the glass envelope of the phototube and the metal walls of the container proved to be a serious problem in constructing the equipment. The most effective seals were especially machined O-rings from sections of large tygon tubing. The tygon took a permanent set owing to cold flow characteristics and in most cases sealed completely. The light absorption characteristics of the liquid phosphor changed gradually with time, and after one month the counting rate had decreased to half the original value. The most sensitive liquid phosphor tested proved to be a solution containing 4 g of 2.5-diphenyloxazole and 0.01 g of 2-(1-naphthy1)-5-phenyloxazole per liter of toluene. With fresh solution in the chamber and with all photomultiplier tubes operating in parallel, the counting rate contributed by any one of the four photomultiplier tubes was about 85 pct of the counting rate from a single tube operated individually. From these observations it was concluded that owing to coincident loss and light attenuation within the liquid phosphor, the apparent sensitivity could not have been materially increased by additional phototubes. The chromalographic effect refers to the separation of constituents in a moving fluid phase which occurs when the phase is passed over a stationary phase, either solid or liquid, or large areal extent. In performing chemical analyses, the large surface contact areal is provided in the case of gas-solid chromatography by-passing the gas over a porous solid and for gas-liquid chronla tog rap hy by-passing the gas over a porous solid which has been coated with a nonvolatile liquid. The porous medium is usually placed in a cylindrical tube, although it may be a relatively flat sheet as in paper chroma-tography. According to one theory,' the separation results from the difference in time spent by various components in the stationary phahe. A gaseous component which is conlpletely insoluble in the stationary phase, or is not adsorbed on the solid, proceeds unimpeded through the column. The versatility and power of the various types of chromatogruphy for the analysis of complex mixtures are evident from their widespread use in performing chemical analyses and from the large number of symposia, books, and papers devoted to the subject in recent years. Associated developments are the application of chromatography to the determination of heats of solution, heats of adsorption, solubilities orK-values, etc. Gas-liquicl chromatography analyses may be characterized by the manner in which the samples are introduced and displaced from the column'. The three techniques used are known as (1) frontal analysis, (3) displacement analysis, and (3) elution analysis. The frontal analysis is performed by displacing an inert gas from the column by a continuous stream of the sample. As indicated in Fig. l(A), all but the first fraction leaving the column represent mixtures rather than pure components. The displacement analysis is conducted by filling the column with a sample, then displacing it with a more strongly adsorbed or absorbed vapor. The resulting chro-matogram is illustrated by Fig. 1(B). Finally, in the elution analysis a small sample of the mixture to be analyzed is introduced as a "plug" into a Rowing stream of carrier gas to give an elution-type chromato-gram. Fig. l(C). The three techniques may be used to provide models to which Row patterns in other physical situations may be compared. PURPOSE OF THE INVESTIGATION The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether natural reservoir rocks, when coated with crude oil, provided sufficient surface areas to give rise to a chromato-graphic separation of light hydrocarbon constituents. The tests were conducted with the light hydrocar-bons in the gaseous state. SANDS TESTED Two sands of widely different permeabilities have been studied: (1) Ventura core (16 md), and (2) Torpedo sandstone core (578 md).Table 1 gives a description of the cores that were tested. With the exception of one frontal-type flow arrangement which was performed on Core 3, the tests were of theelution-type in which a methane-propane mixture was eluted through the core by means of helium. The Ventura core, when impregnated with a weathered crude from the same field, became so impermeable to gas flow that it was necessary to conduct the tests on the granulated cores (Cores 2 and 3).

Pronounced porosity, decreasing with distance from the fracture surface, is found in the necked region of tensile specimens tested at room temperature or liquid nitrogen temperature. A hydrogen solution treatment followed by a quench prevents pore formation in tests at —196°C, but has little effect on tests made at room temperature. Reduction of area values at —196°C are strikingly improved by the same treatment, but show no improvement in room temperature tests. The experimental results support the hypothesis that strain-induced porosity results with hydride initially present or, in material containing less than 50 ppm H, with hydride precipitated by strain aging. ZIRCONIUM'S advent as an engineering material in nuclear reactor construction has brought forth many investigations concerned with the properties of this metal and its alloys. Some attention has been given to the ductility of the metal.1, 2 Particularly, the effect of hydrogen on the impact strength was noted," indicating a pronounced dependence of ductility on the hydrogen content and its distribution in the metal. Micro graphic:' and X-ray diffraction studies' have shown that a precipitated hydride phase causes embrittlement in zirconium,' which implies a distinctly different mechanism from that causing hydrogen embrittlement in steels."-' In the latter case, it is assumed that atomic hydrogen diffuses to rifts, where it forms molecular hydrogen under such internal pressures that it causes the rifts to enlarge, leading to fracture. Thermo-dynamic studies of the Zr-H system8, 9 also indicate that the internal pressure of molecular hydrogen would be too low to cause any damage to the zirconium at room temperature, and the formation of a zirconium hydride (d phase) is favored." It is noteworthy that this phase has a face-centered-cubic structure and nearly 18 pet larger molar volume than close-packed-hexagonal a-zlrconlum' Other features of the ductility of zirconium are the absence of a typical cup-cone failure upon tensile testing, a pronounced strain-induced porosity in the necked region of a tensile bar, Fig 1, and the associated spongy appearance of the fracture surface A tremendous improvement in ductility at liquid nitrogen temperature can be observed following a heat treatment that retains the commonly present quan- tities (10 to 50 ppm) of hydrogen in solution. Such tests show a typical cup-cone failure and the absence of strain-induced porosity, Fig. 2. The present paper reports results of an investigation into the causes of strain-induced porosity in zirconium. Room temperature tensile fractures of mild steel, aluminum, and titanium have also been examined for strain-induced porosity. In each case porosity could be detected, but the amount was orders of magnitude less than was found in zirconium. Of the three metals, titanium showed the strongest effect. Material, Specimens, and Preparation The greater part of this investigation was done on Westinghouse crystal bar zirconium, are-melted, forged, and hot-rolled. Chemical analyses of the hot-rolled plates are given in Table I, along with those of the Foote crystal bar zirconium used in this work. The specimens were machined from the hot-rolled plate (1550°F) of 1/2 in. thickness and subsequently heat-treated according to one of the treatments shown in Table IS. When I first went to Arizona in 1925, mining was primarily an underground job. Ajo, Sacramento Hill in Bisbee and Jerome were the only open pit operations in the state. Thousands of men, however, were employed in underground mining at Morenci, Miami, Inspiration, Globe, Ray, Bisbee, and Superior. The grade of ore in the larger operations was about 1-1/2% copper while a few of the smaller ones mined ore better than 2% Cu. In Utah, the Bingham pit was doing well and growing; in Montana, the vein mines of Butte still yielded ore running 6% Cu.

The 38 companies listed below are those substantially engaged in the mining of metals, non- metals, or coal which appeared among the country's top 500 (on the basis of sales volume) listed in the July 1966 issue of Fortune. General Motors, with $20.7 billion in sales, heads the entire list, and a prominent member of the mining industry, Island Creek Coal, occupies the 500th spot with sales of $109.6 million. The lists of "industry medians" following mining's "Top 38" reveal how well the mining industry fared in 1965 in various salient categories of business performance.

RECENT investigations1 3 of the products of marten-sitic transformation in Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-C alloys have made use of light microscopy to describe mar-tensitic fine structure. The application of conventional metallographic techniques to this problem was possible because of the similarity of distributions of parallel striations developed by etching polished surfaces to distributions of transformation twins which are positively identified in thin films by transmission electron microscopy. The surface striations frequently are not well-defined, and could also be due to, for example, rows of etch pits which are not resolved by the light microscope. This note describes the etching effects revealed by examination of surface replicas of mar-tensite in the electron microscope. The application of a replica technique both extends the observations of fine structure made with the light microscope and allows the results of conventional metallography to be used with more confidence. Samples of an Fe-33 wt pct Ni alloy were used for this study because of the detailed knowledge of the fine structure of martensite which has been developed'-4 for alloys of about this composition. Samples transformed to martensite at -120°C, and transformed samples heated to 340°C to effect a small amount of reversal of martensite to austenite, were examined. Surfaces were first prepared for replication by elec-tropolishing in a chromium oxide-acetic acid electrolyte at a current density of 0.1 amp per sq cm and a temperature of 15°C or a perchloric acid-acetic acid electrolyte at a current density of approximately 2 amps per sq cm and a temperature of 15°C. The polished surfaces were then etched for 4 to 7 sec by immersion in a solution of equal parts HC1, HNO,, and H20. Application of the etchant for this period of time produced discrete attack of certain features without loss of resolution due to overlapping of areas most susceptible to etching. The etched surfaces were replicated by 1) preshadowing with Pt-Pd alloy at an angle of 20 to 30 deg, 2) depositing a thin carbon film, and 3) stripping the film and shadowing material by immersion in a 5 pct nital solution. Two types of etching effects were observed by examination of the surface replicas in the electron microscope: l) continuous striations centered at the bottom of long grooves or the tops of pyramidal elevations on the sample surface, and 2) high densities of fine etch pits. Examples of both types of features are shown in Figs. 1 to 4. The striations are in each case continuous and have the same characteristic configurations as do transformation twins in martensite. Fig. 1 shows that the density of grooves decreases toward the edge of a martensite plate and Fig. 2 shows a region where the striations are of varying length. Similar examples of transformation twin arrangements determined by transmission electron microscopy of thinned foils of martensite have been shown in the literature,'~ and, based on these similarities, the striations and their associated grooves or mounds are considered to be evidence for the presence of transformation twins. The transf~rmation twins in martensite are on the order of l00 A thick, much too fine for resolution by the light microscope. USE of geophysical methods as an aid to prospecting for new oil pools and in the exploration of already discovered pools continued to increase and reached a new high during 1934. As in previous years, the scene of greatest activity was the Gulf coastal plain of Texas and Louisiana. Seismic crews working by the reflection method increased from some thirty crews at the first of the year to forty crews at the end. An increased demand for torsion balance work at the beginning of the year occurred and practically all available instruments were put into service. Some thirty crews with approximately eighty balances continued throughout the year. Both the pendulum and gravimeter methods of gravity surveys registered their initial successes and equipment was increased from five to seven pendulums and from one to three gravimeters during the year. Approximately five magnetometer parties continued to work throughout the year. No surface surveys by the electrical method are known to have been made. SINCE the early work of Gough with Hanson and Wright,l-3 the study of fatigue has been characterized by experiments on single crystals only in recent times.9-10 Now, increasing attention is given to this aspect of fatigue research for the insight that it may provide into details of mechanism. The investigations have concentrated to a large extent on the development of deformation markings on fatigued crystals, and have shown the cracks to originate in slip bands possibly preceded or accompanied by slip-band extrusions. Experiments of special interest to the present work were conducted by paterson5 on copper crystals and involved both metallographic examination and measurement of change in flow stress. Crystals were cycled in alternating tens ion-compress ion with a constant plastic shear-strain amplitude of approximately 0.8 pct, and were particularly revealing for their demonstration of hardening with accumulated strain similar to that in unidirectional straining, through an easy-glide stage I followed by a stage II of rapid hardening; deformation was not continued beyond 40 cycles, however, so that the eventual course of the hardening curve could not be decided. For the conditions used by Paterson, surface slip markings were similar to those observed in unidirectional straining, but there were no X-ray asterisms and no deformation bands on the surface. In current thinking about the nature of fracture in fatigue, two views relative to mechanism are generally acknowledged, with the reservation that both could apply simultaneously in some measure. As one possibility, fracturing across a slip plane is regarded as a result of loss of cohesion from the creation of many point defects by dislocation movement under the cyclic loading.'' On the other hand, fracture has also been taken to follow as a consequence only of the geometry of slip at a free surface, consisting of offsets and crevices which eventually become fatigue cracks.12, l3 The work of McCammon and Rosenbergl4 showing fatigue in polycrystals at 4.2oK makes clear that any long-range diffusion of point defects is unnecessary, yet studies such as those of Forsyth and stubington15 show that accelerated diffusion may be a characteristic of deformation under fatigue loading. Interest in obtaining data of possible use for resolving such questions led to the experiments described below. Copper crystals were conveniently loaded in alternating four-point bending at constant deflection, a test condition shown to approximate a constant plastic strain amplitude for a wide range of axial orientations. The method of testing was not readily adapted to extensive study of temperature effects, but an investigation of the geometry of crack formation could simply be made by orienting,the slip direction at different angles to the surface. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Single crystals were grown by a modified Bridgman method in a stationary gradient furnace under an atmosphere of purified dry nitrogen. Purity of as-grown crystals was 99.999 pct as determined by spectrographic analysis plus vacuum fusion and gravimetric analyses for oxygen and sulfur, respectively.
