THE results are presented of an investigation to discover the fundamental atomic conditions existing in Corson's high-copper alloys hardenable by means of silicide solution and reprecipitation. The study attracted the writer because it offered a very convenient example of the general type of hardenable alloys exemplified by duralumin, Sykes' iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum alloys and the hardenable lead antimony. SUMMARY OF RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS In brief, the investigation shows that very perfect crystallinity exists in the solid solutions prepared at high temperature to contain as much dissolved silicide as possible. The lattice parameter of copper is altered very little by the amount of cobalt, nickel or chromium, and silicon dissolved. The hardening by drawing at a temperature to initiate precipitation of excess silicon and metal produces a remarkable change in the atomistics of the solid solution. The old perfection of crystallinity in the solid solution is destroyed and the new atomic spacings are of variable magnitude even in one grain, and a condition in a measure resembling that found in martensite is observed. Were no particles whatever precipitated by the drawing action, still ample causes for hardness would be in evidence in the solid solution alone. The lack of plane continuity in the crystal grains would oppose slip in a very effective manner. Complete annealing restores the crystalline perfection in large measure. In these alloys even the most sensitive methods failed to reveal the characteristic pattern of the silicide precipitated by the anneal, but this was largely to be expected as the amount is relatively small.

This paper describes the results of volumetric efficiency tests on oil well pumps handling gas oil mixtures. The work was performed in a large scale, above ground unit wherein test conditions could be accurately controlled and measured. The main variables studied were gas/oil ratio (including gas from solution and free gas mixed with oil), pump compression ratio, pump stroke length, pump speed, and clearance volume between the valves at their closest approach. Results are presented for two different pumps and for oils of two viscosities. Relatively small amounts of gas entering the pump resulted in large decreases in volumetric efficiency. Under conditions where the pump was operating at reduced efficiency because of the presence of gas, it was found that variation in the clearance volume between the standing and traveling valves had a considerable effect on pump efficiency level. This effect of the valve clearance volume was found to be significantly altered by the viscosity of the oil used in the tests. The effects on pump efficiency of the other variables studied were found to be relatively small over the range of conditions utilized. INTRODUCTION The production of oil by pumping is often hampered by low volumetric efficiency. A direct increase in lifting costs results from low volumetric efficiency. An indirect increase in lifting costs, probably greater than the direct increase, results from additional wear and tear on pumping equipment and from the down-time necessary for the repairs which can be traced to low-efficiency operation. Both increases in lifting costs tend to reduce economically recoverable oil. A number of different factors can contribute to low pump efficiency. A known basic cause of low efficiency is the presence of free gas in the pumped fluid. Pump volumetric efficiency is calculated only on the basis of liquid pumped and because any free gas pumped is discounted, this volume of free gas would represent a loss of pump efficiency. However, gas also causes a reduction in pump efficiency because it is a highly compressible fluid. It is known that pumps some- times "gas lock" because of excessive gas-to-liquid ratios in the pump barrel. Little is known of the role of gas compressibility in the intermediate case where the pump is operating at low efficiency. The opinion exists, however, that oil-well pumps tend to operate at higher efficiency with long stroke lengths at low speeds, but no quantitative studies of these pumping variables have been reported. It was believed that a much better understanding of the variables which control pump volumetric efficiency could be obtained and that possibly some suggestions as to the methods for increasing efficiency might be found from a study of the operation of pumps handling gas under closely controlled conditions. Previous investigators have studied the effects on pump efficiency of such factors as oil viscosity, oil temperature, slippage of oil. past pump plungers, pump submergence, valve size and spacing, pressure above pump plunger and fluid vapor pressure. However, none of these published investigations were conducted with pumps being subjected to large amounts of gas such as might be the case in a pumping well, nor did any of the investigations study the effect of variation in stroke length or pump speed. A large-scale teat unit was therefore constructed for studying the operation of pumps handling gas and for evaluating effects of such variables as pump stroke length and pump speed. PROCEDURE AND EQUIPMENT A schematic diagram of the pump testing equipment is given in Fig. 1. A 45-ft length of 6-in. casing is mounted vertically in a 65-ft tower. Sight ports are mounted in the casing at intervals near the location of the pump intake and the liquid level in the casing. These sight ports are fitted with Lucite windows sealed by neoprene "0" rings. The Lucite windows are machined to conform to the I.D. of the casing so that no obstruction to flow is present along the casing wall. The casing is fitted with a tubing head and 2-in. tubing is hung inside the casing. Pumps are seated in a shoe attached to the 2-in. tubing. A 1-in. polish rod is attacked directly to the pump without any intervening sucker rods. The top of the polish rod is attached to the weight carrier, which contains a number of weights to be used to force the polish rod in against tubing pressure on the down-stroke. THE annual dinner-dance was held in the large ball room of the Commodore hotel Wednesday evening. A total of 577 were seated at the dinner, over which President Eavenson presided as chairman and toastmaster. In introducing George C. Stone, the James Douglas Medalist, W. R. Ingalls outlined the former's association with the zinc industry. He said, in part In designing and building Palmerton, Stone erected a metallurgical monument and won the title of chief engineer of the New Jersey Zinc Co., with transferal to its New York office in 1900. There lie held forth in dignity, efficiency, and with appreciation until his retirement from active service in 1929. After a few years lie was diverted from the position of chief engineer for his company to the superior one of chief metallurgist and that gave to Stone his next big chance.... This was the conception of a research department and the ability to persuade his directors to adopt it. I shall not pretend to summarize the great things that afterward developed. I shall mention only the institution of the manufacture of lithopone in this country, the charging of the Wetherill furnace with briquets, the mechanicalization of the Wetherills, the accomplishment of continuous distilling, and most recently the introduction of reflux-refining.

The effect of the height of a retaining-wall-supported berm on the slope stability of an idealized mine-tailings dam was investigated. The material in the dam was idealized as a two-layered system with the phreatic surface delineating the boundary between the layers. In each layer the tailings were assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic. The effect of variation in height of the berm was examined for tailings dams with three different, commonly occurring slopes. The stresses and displacements were obtained using the finite element method. An incremental analysis technique was employed to simulate sequential construction of both the tailings dam and the retaining-wall-supported berm. A one-dimensional element was used to represent all interfaces and discontinuities in the finite element model. Assuming a hyperbolic model, the nonlinear stress-strain relationship for the tailings was approximated using the method of successive increments. The stresses obtained in the finite element analyses were used in conventional slope stability analyses assuming circular failure surfaces. The results of the study show that the use of a retaining-wall-supported berm is an effective means of improving the stability of a tailings dam. This increased stability is greater for dams with steeper slopes. In addition, the increase in factor of safety is particularly notable for berm heights less than 25% of the height of the dam.

ONSIDERABLE time and effort have been ex- pended recently in research designed to provide a better understanding of the solid state transformations leading to the permanent magnet qualities of many commercial alloys. The knowledge derived from these investigations has resulted in the development of new magnetic materials as well as improvements in some of the older materials. The permanent magnet qualities of the newer alloys having high residual inductions and high coercive force values, have been attributed to the precipitation of a second phase or an order-disorder transformation in a solid solution. The ternary Co-Fe-V alloys provide an interesting group of magnetic materials having a wide range of magnetic properties. The low vanadium alloys' possess soft magnetic properties similar to the binary Co-Fe alloys, while at higher vanadium contents (about 10 pct) interesting permanent magnet properties are obtained.2,3 Previous work by Nesbitt' on the ternary Co-Fe-V permanent magnet materials, resulted in the conclusion that the precipitation of a second phase, ?, was responsible for the permanent magnet qualities of these alloys. However, unlike the conventional precipitation hardening alloys, the ? phase, which is stable at high temperatures, is precipitated in the low temperature a phase upon aging. Recent work by Geisler and Martin"." has established that the order-disorder reaction inherent in the binary Co-Fe alloys is also present in the ternary Co-Fe-V alloys. On the basis of their investigation, it was proposed that ordering of the a phase is also a possible explanation of the mechanical and magnetic hardening in these alloys. Thus, it appears that the Co-Fe-V alloys are rather unique in that two solid state transformations are taking place which may account for the properties of these alloys. In view of these facts, the present investigation was undertaken to study the mechanism of mechanical and magnetic hardening in the 10 pct V-Co-Fe alloy with particular reference to the role of the ? phase; and to correlate the results of this study with other magnetic properties. In addition, the influence of increasing vanadium contents on the transformation of Co-Fe alloys was also undertaken to supplement the main objective of the investigation. Experimental Procedure The Co-Fe-V alloys used for study consisted of: 1—a commercial lot of Vicalloy I, a 10 pct V alloy, and 2—alloys prepared by powder metallurgy and containing 52 pct Co and 0 to 14 pct V, balance iron. The commercial alloy was received in the cast and forged condition and was used primarily for the detailed study of hardness, electrical resistivity, and magnetic properties of the 10 pct V alloy. The powder metallurgy alloys were prepared from electrolytic iron, commercial cobalt, and ferro-vanadium powders. The processing cycle was as follows: 1—Elemental powders were weighed and mechanically mixed for 24 hr. 2—Mixed powders were pressed at 60,000 psi into the form of bars 5/8 x 5/8 x 5 in. 3—Bars were sintered in an atmosphere of purified dry hydrogen for 24 hr at temperatures ranging from 1380" to 1340°C, depending upon the vanadium content. The as-sintered bars were cut in half; and one half was machined to 7/16 in. diam for thermal analysis. The remainder of the bar was hot forged to approximately 0.050 in. for X-ray diffraction analysis. Additional details of sample preparation are presented subsequently according to the type of test performed. Thermal Analysis Measurements One of the simplest and most widely used tools for determining phase relations as they change with temperature and composition is to study the rate of change of temperature of a material as heat is supplied or extracted at a constant rate. The thermal analysis method used in this investigation is the inverse-rate method described by Smith.'

A CHARACTERISTIC, and, to Americans, an amusing discussion of the three-high rail-mill, arose out of the reading of Mr. Lauth's paper on three-high plate-mills, at the Glasgow meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute. To meet the demands of the planned development of Turkish steel industry an Iron ore processing plant is under construction at Divrigi, Anatolia and is planned to be commissioned mid of 1978. The plant has been designed for an annual capacity of 4 million tons of crushed magnetitic ore. About 1.9 million tons of coarse concentrate of 25-2 mm size and 1.3 million tons of pellet feed concentrate will be produced by wet screening, dry magnetic concentration of coarse size fractions and wet magnetic concentration of fine size fraction. The fine magnetic concentrate will be reground and filtered to prepare the feed for the pelletizing plant.

These properties, owned by Mr. William A. Butcher, of Philadelphia, are in the Panuco Mountain, which lies about thirty miles southwest of the town of Candela. It is a granite which penetrates the surrounding limestones and contains the famous copper-mine to which it gives its name. This mine, which is the property of a company in Philadelphia, has long been known to produce gold as well as copper from almost all its parts; and in corroboration of this be it said, that the undersigned has washed gold from a number of places where the works of the mine or natural sections had exposed the decomposed granite to view in the state of kaolin. It is well known that these junction- or contact-planes between two different formations are often the lodging-places of much freemilling gold, which through fissures are sometimes carried long distances perpendicular to the strata and into the interior of the formation. The structure of the Panuco Mountain, with its outlying spurs and adjacent foot-hills, forms a most instructive and unusual study. At a rough guess the area covered by this mountain will equal, perhaps, twenty-five to thirty square miles ; but its singular feature is the intimate welding together of two formations into one topographical unit. The lines of division between the granite and the calcareous sandstone are of such complicated character that they could not be mapped on a small scale. Unlike the majority of such contacts, the divisions between formations are not always marked in the Panuco Mountain by gulches, valleys, and streams (or the dry beds of the latter), but in the portion of the mountain which lies south of the Panuco copper mine, the lines of junction of these formations cross the gulches and promontories, and, in some instances, cannot be traced by any such topographical features. EVER since the technique of quenching metals and alloys from the melt (splat cooling) was perfected a decade ago, it has been recognized that the grain size of products solidified by this technique may be extremely small.' The further observation that fcc metals quenched from the liquid state contain very few dislocations has led to the inference2 that metals are subjected to negligible or no stresses during the rapid solidification characteristic of the "gun" or "piston-and-anvil" technique. Evidence for the incidence of appreciable densities of stacking faults has, however, been obtained in case of some splat-cooled fcc and hcp alloys,3 although not for pure metals. In the light of these earlier observations it was considered desirable to study X-ray line-broadening effects, if any, in fcc metals rapidly cooled from the melt. In the present work pure silver (>99.99 pct), aluminum (>99.99 pct) and lead (>99.9 pct) were quenched from the liquid state from temperatures about 50°C above the melting point by the "gun technique" and the resulting foils were subjected to X-ray examination in a Philips Diffractometer. The quenched foils (up to -10 u thick) did not generally stick to the substrate surface and could be easily transferred to the Diffractometer without introducing any plastic deformation. The profiles of the first five reflections from the foils were recorded in each case with Cu Ka, radiation at the slowest available scanning speed of 1/8 deg per min. To correct for instrumental broadening, profiles were also recorded from the metals annealed in vacuo at suitable temperatures. The integral breadths of the X-ray reflections were arrived at by a procedure described earlier.' There was a distinct suggestion of preferred orientation in the recorded intensities of reflections from aluminum and lead foils. Such an effect was not observed in case of silver. In addition, the integral breadths of X-ray reflections from splat-cooled aluminum and lead were not significantly different from those recorded for the annealed metals. The analysis was therefore continued only for silver where the X-ray line broadening was appreciable. The pure diffraction broadening, B, was evaluated for each X-ray reflection (hkl) from silver from the observed, B, and instrumental, b, breadths with the aid of each of the three equations due to Scherrer,5 Anantharaman and Christian,6 and Warren and Biscoe,7 respectively: Bs= B-b BAC=B- b2/B Table I gives the values of particle size, 71, the lattice strain, E, arrived at by the use of the following well-known relations and on the assumption that all observed diffraction broadening could be attributed to lattice strain or particle size, respectively: E = 1/4 cos ? n= B cos ? where A is the wavelength of X-radiation and 0 is the Bragg angle. As no significant peak shifts or asymmetry could be detected in the profiles from the foils, the possibility of any significant contribution due to twins or stacking faults was ruled out. The absence of faults is by no means surprising since pure silver is known to develop stacking faults only on severe deformation and the stacking fault densities recorded so far for even silver filings have been extremely low.' The very low values for percentage mean deviation from the mean value for the particle size in Table I strongly suggest that all observed broadening in splat-cooled silver can be attributed only to small particle size. This conclusion receives further support from the lowest mean deviation recorded for data computed from the Scherrer equation based on Cauchy profiles that are considered characteristic of particle size broadening. Further analysis for separation of particle size and lattice strain effects was considered unnecessary in view of the very large mean deviations obtained for strain values and also the earlier results suggesting absence of even detectable strain in metals and alloys quenched from the melt. It is to be stressed in this connection that the particles are actually grains and not cells formed by walls of high dislocation density usually encountered in deformed samples. The US began exporting coal in the late 1800s, at first in very small quantities to Canada and, beginning in 1897 and 1898, to the east coast of South America. Shipments to European countries began on a very limited basis in 1902 and these shipments increased gradually until World War I when shipments overseas increased from 7.3 Mt/a to 20 Mt/a. After the war exports dropped as fast as they had increased and, with the exception of exports to Canada, remained at very low levels until just after World War II when the US again emerged as a major coal exporter. World War II left the coal industries of Europe in ruin. As the US was the only country able to supply large quantities of coal at reasonable prices needed for reconstruction of the European economy, the US coal exports overseas expanded rapidly to 38.6 Mt in 1947. Additionally, we shipped 23.8 Mt of coal to Canada in that year for a total export of 62.3 Mt. Unfortunately, that level was not reached again until 1957 when exports reached an all-time high of 69.3 Mt - a high that has not been reached since. Over the years the level of US coal exports has fluctuated fairly widely. Approximately 80-90% of all US coal exports are high quality metallurgical grade coal so our exports level depends directly on world-wide economic conditions and world steel production levels.

The stability of a 70/30 Mn-Cu alloy aged to peak damping has been investigated using electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and torsional pendulum measurements. Storage at room temperature or at 100" C causes a reduction in damping capacity. This is shown to be due to the formation of subdomains which "lock" the main domain structure and so hinder their movement. After storage the damping capacity can be restored by a retransformation treatment, which generates structures identical to those found in newly aged specimens. Plastic deformation by rolling also causes a decrease in damping capacity. In this case the damping capacity can only be restored by retransformation if the amount of deformation is less than about 5 pct. THE general metallography and structure of these high damping capacity alloys has been discussed in Part I of this work.1 Part II deals with some of the variables that affect the damping capacity. In particular, the stability of the damping capacity of a 70/30 alloy aged for 2 hr at 425° C and quenched has been investigated. The temperature sensitivity of the damping capacity of a 70/30 alloy aged for 2 hr at 450° C has been reported by Birchon.2 The damping capacity begins to decrease with increasing temperature, and is very low above the M, temperature of 125°C. The cubic — tetragonal transformation is completely reversible and there is no apparent thermal hysteresis associated with the change in damping capacity. Another important effect was first reported by Dean and his coworkers.3 They noticed a decrease in the damping capacity with time for specimens of a quenched tetragonal alloy. More recently workers at the Admiralty Materials Laboratory 4 have studied the stability of an aged 70/30 alloy. They found that the damping capacity decreased to half its original value after about 1000 hr at room temperature. EXPERIMENTAL The techniques used for electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction have been described in Part I. The damping capacity was measured by means of a torsional pendulum, using rectangular specimens, 3 by 0.3 mm with a 6 cm gage length. The specific damping capacity, S.D.C., was calculated as a percent amplitude decay in free vibrations over 10 cycles, starting at an amplitude which corresponded to a 700 psi surface shear stress. Because of the stress dependence of the damping,' the values obtained were about a third those reported for a 5000 psi surface shear stress.' RESULTS a) Effect of Aging Temperature. The effect of aging temperature on the damping capacity is shown in Fig. 1. The damping capacity reaches a peak of 12 pct after aging at 400° to 425°C) then begins to decrease as the volume fraction of a Mn increases. At higher aging temperatures the structure becomes cubic again with a low damping capacity. b) Stability of the Aged Structure. The damping capacity of the aged alloy decreases with time at room temperature. This process could be accelerated by storing at 100°C, when about 100 hr were required for the damping to fall to half its original value. The results of room temperature and 100°C storage, for times up to 1000 hr, are shown in Fig. 2. The damping capacity starts to decrease after about 24 hr at 18° C and 1 to 2 hr at 100°C. It was found, however, that the damping could be almost completely restored by retransformation. The specimens were held at a temperature above the M, for a short time, 250° C for 5 min, and then quenched. THE Wisconsin zinc district, also known as the Upper Mississippi lead and zinc district, is an area of about 2500 sq. mi. in the southwestern portion of Wisconsin and adjacent parts of Illinois and Iowa. It includes Iowa, Grant and Lafayette counties in Wisconsin, Jo Davies County in Illinois, and an irregular strip of Clayton and Dubuque counties in Iowa, parallel to the Mississippi River. During periods of high metal prices mining has been quite active in this district, but recently the lower metal prices have caused many companies to suspend, so that at the present time there are only a small number of mines operating. The short life of these mines and the low mineral content of the zinc deposits limit the investment in development and equipment, and necessitates the operation of this equipment at maximum running time and maximum capacity. The tonnage of rock handled (locally termed dirt) is large in comparison with the tonnage of concentrate produced. Moreover, the zinc content of the concentrate is low, varying from 25 to 40 per cent zinc, and the value per ton is correspondingly low. The life of the mines varies greatly. An exception-ally good deposit may produce 2,000,000 tons of rock during a period of ten years, market value permitting, from which will be obtained 100,000 to 150,000 tons of concentrate. One property which might be con-sidered as fulfilling the requirements of a profitable operation was developed and equipped in 1925, oper-ated continuously for a period of two and a half years, produced 484,292 tons of rock, from which was obtained 37,659 tons of zinc concentrate, 34.4 per cent Zn, and 1155 tons of lead concentrate, 67 per cent Pb. During the war period prices of ore permitted the mining of lower grade ores than has been possible in the past few years. The maintaining of a higher grade mill-feed has resulted in reducing the size of stopes formerly carried in the old mines and confining the workings within narrower limits.

The Tooele plant is situated at the mouth of Pine Canyon, five miles northeast of Tooele City. The site forms one terminus of the Tooele Valley railway, which runs southwest through Tooele City to Warner, a station on the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad, thirty-five miles southwest of Salt Lake City. An aerial tramway, four miles in length, crosses the Oquirrh mountains and connects the plant with the Bingham district. The plant consists of a lead-zinc flotation concentrator, lead smelter and copper smelter.

I (New York Meeting, February, 1912.) FLUE-DUST, to most blast-furnace operators, means a troublesome by-product, the formation of which should be curtailed, if not prevented entirely. However, with the increasing use of fine ores, larger furnaces, and high-pressure blast, the production of flue-dust is constantly increasing, and amounts annually in the United States to from 3,000,000 to 3,500,000 tons, An exceedingly high tonnage, of which a large part has been discarded as valueless. As a result of greater economy in the iron industry, the attention of our furnace-men has been directed towards the utilization of this enormous amount of waste material, a problem which had also been given due consideration by metallurgists abroad. Flue-dust is generally a fine material containing considerable coke and iron-ore, with a small admixture of lime and silica, depending upon the burden. The iron-ore is partly reduced, which shows that the dust originates largely in the reducing-zone of the blast-furnace. In the United States this dust usually contains 20 per cent. of coke and more than 40 per cent. of iron. Estimating coke to be worth $3.25 per ton, and iron-ore 7 cents per unit, a ton of flue-dust, unless made available, represents a loss to the furnace-man of $3.50. This accounts for the first efforts to recharge the flue-dust into the furnace, either by moistening it clown with an excess of water, or mixing it with clay to form balls of pulp, or treating it with lime-water. These methods, however, have been practically discarded, as they failed to produce the desired economies. To recover, in the blast-furnace, all the values represented by the material contained in the flue-dust, the following con¬ditions should be complied with
