The diffusivity of carbon (0.1 wt pct C) in Fe-Nz alloys (0 to 100 pct Ni) has been determined for the temperature range 860° to 1100°C. As a function of nickel content, the diffusivity has a maximum near 60 pct Ni (the maximum diffusivity being about 1.3 times that in the absence of nickel); the activation energy has a maximum between 40 and 50 pct Ni and a maximum between 80 and 90 pct Ni. The difference between the minimum activation energy and that in iron is about 3000 cal pev g-atom; Do has a minimum between 40 and 50 pct Ni and a maximum between 80 and 90 pct Ni. The results cannot be rationalized by an approximate thermodynamic treatment. THE diffusivity of carbon has been determined in a number of iron alloys over a limited concentration range. It seemed desirable to investigate a system which allows an extended range of alloy composition within a single-phase region. The Fe-Ni system is ideal in this respect, in that all alloys from 100 pct Fe to 100 pct Ni are fee in a convenient temperature range.&apos; The carbon diffusivity was determined by a decar-burization method. The experimental procedure was identical with that used to determine the diffusivity of carbon in y Fe-Co alloys.2 The experimental data are given in Table I. A small correction (order of a few percent) has been made to the measured carbon loss to correct for the carbon lost from the ends of the cylinders.&apos; Since the diffusivity of carbon varies with carbon content the measured diffusivity is an average value for a carbon content between zero (surface) and that at the center of the sample at the end of the decarburization periods. In making the correction in D to 0.1 wt pct C it is assumed that the measured D corresponds to the arithmetical mean of the carbon content at the surface and at the center of the sample at the end of the decarburization period.3 Since this correction is small (<4 pct in D) and since for our decarburization times the changes in carbon content at the center of the sample was small the mean carbon content could have been taken as half the initial value. It is further assumed that the change in D with carbon content for the alloys is the same as that for the diffusion of carbon in iron. From the data of Wells, Batz, and Mehl4 and of smith5 the correction of D from the mean carbon content to 0.1 wt pct C is 0.3 (0.1 - mean wt pct C). The results for iron are given in Ref. 2. Within the experimental error log Do.l%C for each alloy is a linear function of 1/T; the constants for the equation determined by the method of least squares are given in Table I. The deviations of the experimental points from the least-squares line are of the order of 2 pct in D. A comparison of our results for the diffusivity of carbon in nickel with those of other investigations is shown in Fig. 1. The lower curve in Fig. 1 is a linear extrapolation of values calculated* from the equation of Diamond6 for the relaxation time (temperature range 100° to 500°C). The results indicate a small increase in the activation energy over the temperature range 100° to 1400°C; however, it is difficult to say whether the change in Q is real or experimental error. Certainly the change in Q is less than the variation of 5 kcal per g-atom in the diffusivity of carbon in a iron.6 The experimental data for all the alloys are plotted in Fig. 2. As a function of nickel content the diffusivity has a maximum near 60 wt pct Ni at all temperatures investigated and possibly a minimum between 80 and 90 wt pct Ni for temperatures below 1000°C. The activation energy, Q, and log Do are plotted as a function of the nickel content in Fig. 3. Due to the limited temperature range of our experiments neither Q nor Do can be determined precisely; the activation energies appear to be consistent to ±0.3 kcal per g-atom; however the deviation from the absolute values may be considerably larger, see Table II. The Do values probably have little significance. The solid line for Do in Fig. 3 represents the values required to reproduce the experimental values for D when Q has values represented by the upper solid line The diffusivity of carbon may be expressed in terms of the mobility B22, the activity coefficient r2,

THE indexing of a field-ion micrograph is in many cases similar to the indexing of the poles of a stereo-graphic projection.* If one has a standard projection as a guide, the task of indexing is relatively simple. In this way, field-ion micrographs of bcc and fcc wires have been oriented from projections available in most any text on X-ray diffraction. These books always illustrate the projections for the bcc and fcc structures and even for a particular hcp structure. There is no "standard" hcp projection because the angles between planes depend on the c/o ratio of the unit cell. In order to index field-ion micrographs of hcp metals, one must compute the angles between various planes—a rather laborious task. In recent work,, we have had to identify the structure and index the orientation of field-ion micrographs of the compounds WC and W,C. To overcome the problem of computing angles by hand or calculator, a program was written in Fortran lV for use on the IBM 360, Model 50 which will compute all angles between planeswith indices (hlklll) and (17,k,l2) in the range from (447) to (444) for any given c/o ratio. The program, which is more specific than that of Camp and clum, was so written as to take advantage of the multiplicity of the hexagonal system, and, for the limits defined above, only 26,649 values out of a possible 265,721 values had to be computed. This is a 90 pct saving in time (and cost) and was accomplished in the following way. Because the lattice parameters of the hexagonal crystal system are defined such that: a = b * c [1] the I index does not enter into the multiplicity (i.e., it cannot be transposed with the h or k indices), and all possible values of h and I, from 4 to 4 must be used—a total of eighty-one combinations. The index h2 varies the most—it must assume values from - Ill,: to 3Ihl. The indices kl and k2 are always equal and vary

Extensive progress has been made in the metallurgy of alloys for die castings. Enthusiastic proponents of some alloys are inclined to make extravagant claims for their materials, which may be justified by physical tests on test bars made from the respective alloys but are seldom justified by the results obtained with commercial die castings made from those alloys. Chemical analysis of the test bars and castings fails to determine the cause of these variations, since they are due to other physical factors entering into the commercial production of die castings. In this paper, an attempt will be made to outline some of the factors in commercial die-casting practice to which these variable results may be attributed, in the hope that the manufacturer of die castings, recognizing the importance of these factors, will devote more attention to them in the design and construction of dies and equipment. In 1914,l the author defined die castings as "metal castings made by forcing molten metal, under pressure, into metallic molds or dies." This definition was given in order to differentiate die castings from other molded metal products such as "permanent-mold" castings, L&apos;slush" castings and similar products that are sometimes erroneously termed die castings. The term "die casting" could be interpreted to include all castings made in metal molds or dies; but since this term, like most of our technical nomenclature, has been developed by commercial practice we must look to this practice for its proper definition. The Germans, with their usual devotion to desecriptive names, have adopted the name of sprilzguss (squirt cast) for die castings. Undoubtedly this name is more descriptive of the die-casting process, where the metal is literally squirted into the die and serves to differentiate this process from other metal mold processes, where the metal is poured into the die. In the earlier paper mentioned, the author also emphasized the fact that the definition given for die castings indicated clearly that the satisfactory operation of the process must comprise three factors, all of which must be considered of vital importance to the successful operation of the die-casting process:

The concepts of nucleation and of growth have adequately described the isothermal phase transformations to which they have been applied.ls2 However, these concepts have not yet been used successfully to describe the kinetics of a number of transformations that are not observed to take place isothermally. A typical reaction of this type is the austenite to martensite transformation in steels, for which the new phase appears only during cooling of the parent phase. If the cooling is interrupted, transformation ceases; yet had the cooling continued, transformation would also have continued. Nuclei of a new phase do not leap into existence all at once by the simultaneous cooperation of a large number of atoms or molecules of the parent phase; rather they are formed at finite rates by gaining or losing atoms one at a time from the surrounding materiaL3,4 Further thermo-dynamic considerations require a finite concentration of small transitory nuclei of all unstable phases to exist at equilibrium in a stable phase.= For steel in particular, nuclei of ferrite (a iron) exist at equilibrium in austenite (y iron) at temperatures where austenite is the stable phase. If a high-temperature phase a be cooled sufficiently rapidly from temperature TI above the a-ß equilibrium temperature To, to temperature T-1 below To where ß is the stable phase, the equilibrium distribution of ß nuclei corresponding to the high temperature will be retained. There are two limiting possibilities of particular interest: I. The steady state rate of nucleation of ß may be appreciable at T_1, and may require a concentration of sub-critical nuclei exceeding that retained from the high temperature. Time will be required then for the concentration of nuclei to build up to the steady state value, and an induction period will be observed during which the rate of nucleation will increase to the steady state value. 2. The steady state rate of nucleation of ß may be negligible at T-l, while the critical size for continuous growth of ß nuclei, which decreases with increased subcooling of the a phase, may reach a value so small that some. of the retained high-temperature nu-

IN THE past year, Jaffee and Campbell&apos; and Finlay and Snyder2 reported on the mechanical properties of titanium-base alloys, some of which were in the same ranges of composition as are covered in this paper. In this paper, evidence confirming that given by Finlay and Snyder on the effects of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen on titanium will be presented; and, in addition, new data will be given on the effects of these elements on the flow properties and phase transformation of titanium. Materials and Preparation of Alloys The preparation and general properties of iodide titanium have been adequately described elsewhere.&apos; , As-deposited iodide titanium rod, prepared at Battelle, of Vickers hardness less than 90 was employed as the base metal in the present work. This was the same material as that used by Finlay and Snyder.2 The probable analysis reported by them for standard quality metal holds here also: N 0.005 pct, 0 0.01 pct, C 0.03 pct, Fe <0.04 pct, A1 <0.05 pct, Si <0.03 pct, and Ti 99.85 pct. Carbon was added in the form of flake graphite supplied by the Joseph Dixon Crucible Co. Oxygen was added in the form of c.p. grade TiO, powder, produced by J. T. Baker Chemical Co. Nitrogen was added in Ti3N4 powder, supplied by the Remington Arms Co. Individual ingots weighed 7 or 8 g. Carbon, oxygen, or nitrogen was added by placing the corresponding powder in a capsule made from as-deposited iodide titanium rods and melting the capsule with the balance of the charge. The charge was are-melted with a tungsten electrode on a water-cooled copper hearth under a partial vacuum of very pure argon (99.92 pct minimum). Melting was practically contamination free. Vick-ers hardness increases of less than 10 points were normal for unalloyed iodide titanium control melts. Nitrogen analyses of are-melted iodide titanium showed a nitrogen content of 0.005 pct, about the same as is present in the as-deposited rod. No tungsten pickup was found in a melt of iodide titanium analyzed for tungsten. Weight losses in melting nitrogen-free alloys were very small and varied consistently from nil to 0.015 g (0 to 0.2 pct). This permitted the use of nominal composition for these alloys. Chemical analyses made for carbon, which can be analyzed conveniently by combustion methods, justified this procedure. Where nitrogen was added, considerable splattering took place. Here it was necessary to analyze for nitrogen by the Kjeldahl method. The ingots were hot rolled at 850°C to about 0.045 in. thick. After hot rolling, the strips were descaled by mechanical grinding, and then given a cold reduction of 5 to 10 pct to insure a uniform thickness throughout the length of the specimen. The edge strips and the tensile strips were annealed in a vacuum of 1x10-4 mm Hg pressure for 3 1/2 hr at 850°C and furnace cooled. Methods of Investigation Hardness Measurements: At least five Vickers hardness measurements were taken using a 10-kg load on each sample in the following conditions: (1) top and bottom of each ingot, (2) top and bottom surface of as-rolled and annealed sheet, and (3) on cross-section of annealed sheet and all quenched specimens. Tensile Tests: Tensile tests were conducted on Baldwin-Southwark testing machines having load ranges of 600 or 2000 lb. Tests were made on 1-in. gauge-length specimens, 3 1/4-in. overall length, 1/2 in. wide, 0.040 in. thick, with a reduced section 1 1/4 in. long and 0.250 in. wide. Two SR-4, A-7 strain gauges, one mounted on each side of the specimen, were used to measure the strain over a limited range to determine the modulus of elasticity. After the modulus of elasticity readings had been taken, load vs. strain readings were taken, using only one strain gauge, at increments of 0.0001 in. until the yield points were passed and then at 0.001-in. increments to the limit of the strain-gauge indicator (0.02 in.). Strain readings above 0.02 in. per in. were taken every 0.01 in., using dividers to measure the strain between the 1-in. gauge marks until the maximum load had been reached. Crosshead speed, when using the SR-4 gauges, was 0.005 in. per min, and, when using dividers, 0.01 in. per min. Flow Curves: Flow curves were determined using the true stress-true strain data obtained during the tension test. The usefulness of this type of information has been dealt with very adequately elsewhere by L. R. Jackson,&apos; J. H. Hollomon,6 and many others. Flow curves of true stress vs. true strain could be converted to the more conventional cold-work curve of 0.2 pct offset yield strength vs. percentage of cold reduction by means of the transformation, 1/1 = 1/1-R, where R is the fraction reduction in cold working. Thus, the true strains corresponding to percentage reduction can be calculated, and the 0.2 pct offset yield strengths scaled off the — 6 curve by taking the true stresses corresponding to the values of 6 + 0.002 strain. Heat Treatment: For the transformation studies, the alloys were heat treated in a horizontal-tube furnace using a dried 99.92 pct argon atmosphere, and quenched into water. Essentially no contamination was found after several hours of heat treatment at temperatures up to 1050°C. Metallography: Specimens were prepared in the

The effectiue distriblltion coefficient has been Measured in a series of vertical, normal freezing experirtzents with large current densities passing through the solid-liquid interface. The results indicate that the effect of the current on solute redistribution is due to electvotransport in the liquid. The high currents produced extensive mixing in the liquid which was considerably reduced by solidifying in small lubing. Analysis of the convection indicates that it probably vesulls from a horizontal temperature gradient produced by the Joule heating- of the electvic crirver~t. Due to the strong dependence of this convection upon the specimen radius, it is conclnded that only for specit~ens with radii of less than somewhere between 1 and 2 mm wilt electric field freezing be getlerally effec-tire at enhancing the purification of zone-melting experittierats in loe-melting alloys. Experiments on 0.8-mm lubes illustrate some interesting potential applications of this techniqne as a means of solute control on smcrll specimens. In a number of papers published within the last few years&apos;-4 it has been found that passage of large dc currents through the solid-liquid interface of a freezing alloy produces a change in the solute redistribution accompanying the solidification. It had been predicted theoretically by Hucke et al.s and by Pfann and Wagner that such an effect would occur as the result of electrotransport within the liquid boundary layer at the solid-liquid interface. These authors independently derived the following relation between the effective distribution coefficient and the variables of the process: Where k0 is the equilibrium distribution coefficient, V is the mobility of the solute relative to the solvent, E is the electric field intensity, D is the solute diffusion coefficient, R is the rate of interface motion, and 6 is the boundary layer thickness. Both groups of authors show that this equation predicts the possibility of extending the purification ability of zone-melting experiments by the addition of an electric current. However, there are other effects in addition to electro-transport which could be produced by the high dc current and might, perhaps, invalidate the applicability of Eq. [I]. For example, high electric current might affect the interface reaction or perhaps the equilibrium distribution which was assumed to exist at the interface. It was the purpose of this work to determine the applicability of Eq. [I] by systematically investigating a simple system for which all of the necessary parameters were known. It was of particular interest for speculating on the potential usefulness of this technique to determine the maximum practical field intensities obtainable, and the effect of these high fields upon convective mixing in the liquid. The initial work in this study was published in a previous paper3 which will be referred to as I. In that work, a current density of 2000 amps per sq cm was used with specimen diameters of 5 mm. The results gave a qualitative confirmation of Eq. [I.], and also showed that a large amount of convective mixing was produced in the liquid by the current. The present study is an extension of that work to smaller specimen diameters and higher current densities. Two points were overlooked in I and will be emphasized here: a) the value of ko has not been well-established in the Sn-Bi system and b) the observed convection could be due to thermal convection produced from the Joule heating. EVALUATION OF k0 To evaluate Eq. [ I.] it is necessary to know the value of the equilibrium distribution coefficient, k,. Tn I the value of k, was taken as 0.3 from a published phase diagram.7 According to ansen&apos; the best data on the phase boundaries of the Sn-Bi system are those of Davidson.5 The data of Davidson give a k, value ranging from 0.21 to 0.25 for the compositions studied in this work, or an average value of around 0.23. In a recent publication, Rigaud and Tougas&apos;10 determined ko by means of a solidification technique. For an alloy of approximately the same composition as that used in this work they obtained a ko value of 0.39. Hence, there is considerable uncertainty in the value of ko and, consequently, a series of experiments were made to determine k, more accurately.

Equations are derived from statistical considerations to represent the activities of each component of an interstitial solution, and of a compound with a wide homogeneity range as a function of composition and temperature, based on the interaction energies between the various components, Eij. The equations are checked on the binary systems Fe-C, Ta-H, and Y-H, the ternary systems Ti-O-H, liquid Fe-C-0, and the compounds TiO, MnO, COO, and YH,. In all cases the present model represents the experimental data well. THE aim of this paper is to derive from statistical considerations the thermodynamic behavior of non-substitutional solid solutions. "Nonsubstitutional solid solution" means either an interstitial solid solution (carbon in iron, oxygen and hydrogen in hexagonal and bcc titanium, and so forth) or deviation from stoichiornetry in compounds (introduction of vacancies—removal of atoms in one or both lattice sites of compounds FeO, MnO, TiO, NbO, YH2). wagnerl and Fowler and Guggenheim considered the theory of compounds with small deviation from stoichiometry; Anderson includes larger deviations from stoichiometry, the defect being present in one component only, as vacancy and interstitial. Rees considers only vacancies in one of the components and introduces various kinds of sites for the component where the defect occurs; the various sites interact with different energies, thus giving isotherms with two or more plateaus. Both Rees and Anderson are mainly occupied in determining the limits of two-phase regions, and the defect interaction energy is determined from the critical point. Darken and Gurry5 gave a brief treatment of carbon solution in iron; Speiser and spretnak calculated the configurational entropy for binary interstitial solid solutions by assuming that each interstitial atom in the solution excludes a certain number of neighboring interstitial sites from occupancy. Use will be made of this concept later. Hoch et al treated transition metal oxides of the NaCl-type structure, and also oxygen solution in titanium.&apos; The main aim was to determine the behavior of the activity of one of the components as a function of the composition in the single-phase region. In the present paper, the various interaction energies are discussed in detail and the similarity between interstitial solid solutions and deviation from stoichiometry in ionic compounds is shown. Both types of systems have in common that at least on one kind of lattice site only one kind of atom occurs; this gives a fixed frame to the system, permitting a much easier statistical treatment than for the substitu-tional solid solutions. (The theory is also applied to ternary systems.) The difference between an interstitial solution and deviation from stoichiometry can be explained as follows. In an interstitial solution in the pure or standard state the host atom or host structure is present alone and all the interstitial sites which are going to be filled when the interstitial atom is introduced are empty. The interstitial solution is now created by introducing atoms into this empty lattice. In the deviation from stoichiometry, both kinds of lattice sites are already occupied in a special fashion (all lattice sites occupied, or the same fraction of lattice sites empty, or one kind completely filled, the other only two-thirds). Deviation from stoichiometry removes atoms from lattice sites, adds them, or removes atoms from one kind of lattice site and introduces them on the other lattice site. Though both cases (interstitial solution and deviation from stoichiometry) lead almost to the same equations, they are treated separately. The treatment given below corresponds to the "regular solution"10 treatment of substitutional solid solutions. Speiser and spretnak&apos;s6 treatment is similar to the athermal solution in the substitutional use. a) INTERSTITIAL SOLID SOLUTIONS Theory. It will be assumed that there are N lat-tice sites occupied by the host atom (denoted by 1). Corresponding to those N lattice sites there are N octahedral and EN tetrahedral interstitial sites. A study has been made of the decarburization of low-carbon sheet steels at temperatures from 1100" to 1475°F in mixtures containing hydrogen, nitrogen, water vapor, and in some instances carbon monoxide. Decarburization occurs principally by the reaction C (in steel) + H20 = CO + H2 and follows a first-order rate law. The decarburization rate appreciably increases with an increase in temperature up to about 1325°F, but the increase in rate is small with fur- Use of a dry hydrogen atmosphere results in a relatively slow decarburization of steel and use of a wet hydrogen atmosphere results in relatively rapid decarburization. It is now generally recognized&apos; that the reaction C (in steel) + H2O = H2 + CO [l] accounts for most of the decarburization that occurs in wet hydrogen-containing atmospheres. The present article is concerned with the decarburization of low-carbon sheet steel in H2-N2 atmospheres ther increase in temperature. The limiting rate of decarburization can be predicted from a knowledge of the solid solubility and diffusivity of carbon and this rate is approached as the water-vapor content of an atmosphere is increased. Hydrogen contents above about 8 pct are beneficial only in that they permit higher levels of water vapor to be used without oxidation of the steel. A buildup of CO in the atmosphere lowers the rate of decarburization. containing various amounts of water vapor and carbon monoxide. The effectiveness of these atmospheres and the influence of temperature on decarburization rate will be considered. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The chemical compositions of the three steels used in decarburization-rate studies are listed in Table I. Steel A was a commercially hot-rolled rimmed steel that was cold-reduced at the Laboratory to furnish specimens 0.025, 0.041, and 0.059 in. thick. The obligation of an employer to the State requires certain things of him as matters of good citizenship: for instance, that his workmen shall have a living wage, that child labor shall not be employed, that injuries from accidents shall not make workmen a charge upon the State, and that the laborer&apos;s children shall have opportunity for education and to become good and useful citizens. Affairs of this kind are not taken up as philanthropy, for the officials of a corporation or a large manufacturing concern may not feel at liberty to spend the funds of their company as prompted simply by motives of kindliness; but they may spend company money on such matters because it is good business. For years, the poisonous effects of lead, phosphorus, and dust have been emphasized in books on industrial hygiene and their elimination has been urged; but the more important and everyday physiology of the workman himself has been neglected. Part of my object in writing this paper is to show how our knowledge of physiology may be applied to working conditions in everyday life. In the interest of industrial laborers, accident compensation laws have been enacted in 33 States. This has been carried forward rapidly, because it has been shown that it pays both employer and employee. A further step is the recognition of sickness and disablement independent of accidents, not only because of their immediate cost to the worker and to the employer, but because continued efficiency in work and business depends largely upon health. Some measure of the importance of health in industry can be gained by the knowledge that records kept by some companies which now make this the subject of careful inquiry show that the time lost by employees, through illness, is several times as much as that lost as the result of industrial accidents. It is true that accidents frequently result in permanent disability or death, but it is equally true that illness is also a cause of permanent disablement or death. Thus the chief difference is that the loss to the employee through accidents occurring in the course of his employment is now generally recognized as a cost

The possible sources of potash salts in the United States have been considered from many points of view during the last several years, but it is only within the last two or three months that the situation has become acute. We import from Germany, the only sourcc of large supply, more than $10,000,000 worth of potash salts annually, and this business has been badly crippled by the European war. If there was ever a time in our industrial existence when the necessity of providing for our own needs was more acute than it is now, we are not aware of it. One has only to study the price lists of chemicals sent out by the large supply houses to see the change wrought within a very short time. Whether or not these prices are to maintain for a considerable time, no one can say; but it appears to be probable that we shall not see prices materially lower for a period of uncomfortable length, to say the least. It is not my purpose at this time to discuss the various sources of supply of potash salts that have been suggested or recommended. Some of them might afford a pleasing relief but all of them combined would not affect the situation seriously. If we are to have our own sources of potash salts, they will have to compare, in some efficient manner, with the sources upon which we have drawn during the last 20 or 30 years; i.e., they must exist in minable quantities. It seems to me to be quite idle to speculate upon our domestic sources of potash if those sources are not of a character similar to those upon which we have so long depended. A few thousand or, perhaps, a few hundred thousand dollars&apos; worth of chemically derived potash may be produced under the stress of present conditions, but when we consider that each year demands more than $10,000,000 worth, we must look to underground sources; we must look to mines similar to the famous Stassfurt and Halle deposits. If we cannot mine potash salts, we shall have to do without them for a while.

In my paper on " End-Lines and Side-Lines in the Mining Law," read at the New York meeting of February, 1889 (Trans., xvii., 787), I discussed certain points involving the rights of a locator, B, who had located and surveyed a piece of ground, X + Y, of which only Y was properly subject to location, X being already held by another claimant, and had applied for and received a patent, granting X + Y, " excepting and excluding X." The paper concluded with the following questions : " Is there any difference in effect between the grant to him of Y simply and the grant of X + Y, &apos; excepting and excluding X&apos; ? Why should any mining locator stake out his boundaries upon another location, and thus appear to assert a claim which he immediately withdraws? What is the legal force of such boundaries, established upon the land of another?" After calling attention to the fact that the entrance upon another&apos;s land for such a purpose is a trespass, and the principle that no trespasser can create by his trespass any right which he would not have without it, I reserved to another occasion a review of the history of the absurd practice of imaginary boundaries for mining claims, and a discussion of their legal effect. This practice is founded, of course, in the regulations and decisions of the United States General Land Office. There is nothing in the Revised Statutes which hints at it. On the contrary, the terms of Section 2322, giving to a locator " the exclusive right of possession and enjoyment" of the surface of his claim, seems clearly to forbid the use of that surface for the boundary-stakes of another locator. But the Act of 1866, though it provided for the issue of patents upon payment to the Government of so much per acre, and really by implication (as I have always believed) involved the absolute grant of the surface, was not so construed by the courts generally, or by the Land Office. DOES hand-sorting of mill feed pay? The fact that the practice is so general would seem to indicate that there must be good reasons for following it; yet, to my mind, the advantage in many cases is doubtful enough to invite a thorough discussion of the subject, in an effort to determine under what conditions hand-sorting does pay. A typical sorting plant in the Coeur d&apos;Alene district handles about 800 tons of mine-run ore per day. The material is run over a grizzly with about 4-in. opening; the oversize is crushed to about 4-in. size and joins the undersize, and the whole product is washed and screened on trommels with about 1 ½ -in. openings. The oversize from these trommels is spread on a belt and the waste and first-class ore are sorted out by hand, the residue being further crushed, and passes, together with the trommel undersize, into the mill feed bins. About 50 tons of shipping ore and 150 tons of waste are sorted out per day, leaving about 600 tons of mill feed. To sort out this material requires 20 ore sorters and five bosses and repairmen. The normal cost of hand-sorting is about 16 c. per ton of run-of-mine ore, or 65 c. per ton of material sorted out. I believe that straight crushing and milling of the run-of-mine ore, in this case, is not only cheaper, but is metallurgically moree canonical and efficient than hand-sorting followed by milling of the residue. At one of the Bunker Hill rock-houses, 1250 tons of run-of-mine ore are reduced to pass 30-mm., or about 1 ¼ -in. opening in six hours, requiring five men. The equipment and the power consumed are not greatly different from that required in a sorting plant of the same capacity, and the normal cost of thus preparing the feed for milling is under 3 c. per ton of mine product. The relative cheapness of this method as against hand-sorting is thus clearly established, the saving being about 13 c. per ton. If there is any virtue in hand-sorting, then, it must lie in the metallurgical results achieved.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THROUGH wide experience at numerous mills in the United States I have found that there is a decided difference of opinion among the producers of steel as to what constitutes commercially sound steel. Some metallurgists insist upon having, for certain grades of steel, a so-called "open steel," -i.e., one which contains numerous blowholes of varying sizes, and consequently but little volume of true pipe, although a central intermittent shrinkage cavity often extends well down into the ingot: Such blowholes and pipe are expected to weld up during rolling or forging, because their surfaces are not oxidized. Even if this be admitted, included slag particles and a high degree of segregation are bound to be present in the product of such ingots. Blowholes are the result of an oxidized heat, and all heats, unless made or finished in the electric furnace, are oxidized more or less. Subsequent deoxidation, or rather degasification, either in the ladle or in the mold, or in both, is necessary to reduce or prevent blowholes. As is well known, a greater yield of billets or sheets is secured from the ingot by allowing the formation of blowholes, but this is undoubtedly obtained at the expense of the quality of the product. Decided segregation of carbon, phosphorus, and sulphur, as well as small included slag particles, undoubtedly exists throughout the greater portion of all so-called open steel, and cannot be removed by cropping. The first requisite for sound, homogeneous steel ingots and blooms is therefore, in my opinion, so to treat the steel in the furnace, ladle, and mold that "piping" steel is produced. The line of demarcation between harmful and so-called "harmless" blowholes is practically impossible to define. Is it not, therefore, the better and safer practice to use means for the elimination of blowholes and correspondingly reduce the segregation and allow the formation of a well-defined shrinkage cavity or pipe .at the upper end of the ingot? D. R. MITCHELL*—The Chairman mentioned that we have had many papers on cleaning of fine coal and treatment of wash water solids. There are, of course, two reasons for that. One is that we have legislation, particularly in the east. that is making us go into these things whether we want to or not. It just so happens at the present time that I have four plants that are going up under my general direction, three new and one rehabilitation job, and in all of them, we have these problems. Therefore, I was very happy to be able to listen to these papers, because some of the things that are in them are going to help me solve some of the problems that I am facing. Of course, the second reason why we are concerned about fine coal recovery is the fact that coal has become a luxury item in a good many places, particularly in the anthracite region, so that we cannot afford to have it go to waste like we did in former years. There is a third minor reason, and that is that we are finding how to handle and use the extremely fine sizes that we did not know how to use in former years. Now, I have a couple of questions that I would like to ask. First, what are the maximum solids that you could have in a pulp going to one of these launder screens? I realize that it would be for anthracite. Second, of course the life of these screen surfaces is not very long— with brass or bronze, I believe it is a week, and with stainless steel, a month. Would it be possible to use screen surfaces like the Bixby-Zimmer round rod for the small sizes and possibly increase the life? Have you experimented with that? Another point that I would like to bring out, both in Mr. Parton&apos;s paper and in some of the others, in studying cyclones and any settling apparatus where we use orifices, the life of the orifices is very short, and that is a problem that still has to be solved. The following notes may serve to bring before your Institute an idea of the iron-ore resources of Pictou County. Enough work has been done to permit an estimate to be formed of their quality and probable extent. As yet the systematic mining and smelting of ironore in Nora Scotia is confined to the operations of the Steel Company of Canada, in Colchester County. Although the locality I am about to describe appears, in many respects, well adapted to iron smelting, etc., no attempts have yet been made to begin work. Nora Scotian capital is more readily turned to lumbering, fishing, and shipping ventures; and such an investment appears equally foreign to the rest of the Dominion. I need not, however, go further into this part of the subject, and can only hope that my notes may prove serviceable as indicating a probable field for future development. The accompanying map shows the position of the harbor of Pictou relative to the coal and iron-ore fields, and to the railways which intersect them. The branch of the Intercolonial Railway, running from Truro to Pictou, forms the western boundary of the iron-ore district, which extends beyond the point where the New Glasgow and Cape Breton Railway crosses the French River. The iron-ore district may be roughly described as a triangle formed by the ore-outcrops and the two railways, the former making the base, and the latter the sides of the triangle, the apex resting on the coal-field at New Glasgow. The drainage of the country is toward the Gulf of St. Lawrence, through the Middle, East, Sutherland&apos;s, and French rivers; and the surface is undulatory, seldom exceeding two hundred feet above the sea-level, except in the district lying between Glengarry and the upper waters of the French and Sutherland&apos;s rivers, where a maximum height of about five hundred feet is reached at several points. Geologically speaking, the district embraces two divisions, the Carboniferous and the Silurian, the latter resting on strata provisionally considered to be of pre-Cambrian age. As no geological
