ANY metal which contains even a small percentage of aluminum possesses certain peculiarities of appearance and properties which are exhibited both when the metal is melted and after it solidifies. Pure aluminum, or an alloy containing a small proportion of aluminum, can be melted without flux-except for a layer of charcoal-because a film of aluminum oxide and metal forms at the surface of melted aluminum. Although very thin, this film is air-proof, and it prevents the metal underneath from oxidizing. This oxidized film does not move easily on account of its toughness and high surface tension. One very important point in connection with this process of still casting has not been strongly enough stressed, namely, that the same kind of surface film with the same peculiarities forms over the surface of all melted alloys that contain even a small proportion of aluminum. Experienced foundrymen know how desirable it is to cast aluminum under its "skin" or-under the surface of the film which tends to remain still. In the case of red copper, when in fusion, the surface shows pure copper only. This is due to the fact that liquid copper constantly absorbs the copper oxide which forms on the surface. By closely examining melting copper the oxide can be seen dissolving in the bath, and going into solution just as pulverized sugar dissolves in water. When copper is cast in the open, either in wire bars or cakes, the surface of metal exposed to the air is covered by a film of black, oxide that cannot be absorbed by the metal.

If the tonnage of merchantable iron ore remaining in the Lake Superior district is divided by the average of the annual shipments for the past 20 years, it will be found that this ore supply will be exhausted in approximately 35 years. This computed exhaustion period would be an indication of the future activities of the iron-mining industry if it were not for the fact that merchantable ore is being manufactured from low-grade ore, of which there is an almost inexhaustible supply in the Lake Superior district. It is true that at present only the simplest of these low-grade ores are being concentrated to any considerable extent, but progress is being made with the treatment of the more complex ores, and now, in addition to 20 washing plants on the Mesabi Range, three plants are equipped with jigs for the treatment of ore that cannot be concentrated simply by washing. The latest addition to the ore-treating plants of the Mesabi Range is a magnetic roasting and concentration plant at Cooley, Minn., in which ore that cannot be concentrated either by washing or by jigging is roasted to the magnetic state and concentrated on magnetic separators. This plant is beginning its third season of operation, and while it is too soon to make definite predictions, there are strong indications that this new process may make commercially possible the manufacture of high-grade, merchantable iron ore from large quantities of low-grade ore now considered worthless. After the iron oxide contained in an ore has been converted to magnetite, almost any desired grade of concentrate can be produced, using magnetic-concentration equipment of the types now in general use for the concentration of the natural magnetites of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The conversion of hematite (Fe203) to magnetite (Fe3O4) is easily accomplished by heating the ore to a dull red temperature in a reducing atmosphere. The reaction is slightly endothermic, and while it requires 200 B.t.u. to heat to 900' F. one pound of hematite ore containing 45 per cent Fe, it requires only 100 B.t.u. to convert the oxide into magnetite. The work to be described was undertaken at various periods from 1937 to 1939 on the Busia gold field, in the eastern province of Uganda. It was decided to examine the possibility of reef prospection by the resistivity method, for it was not known how far the usually disintegrated nature of most reefs in the ubiquitous laterite near the surface would obscure indications obtained by resistivity traverses. The work at the commencement was therefore largely experimental, but the results obtained thereby were satisfactory, and a survey was started at the Government closed area at Amonikakine. With the limited time and resources at the writer's disposal, it was not possible to complete the survey to his satisfaction or to follow up exhaustively all the geophysical indications, but some of the results of the experimental work and the survey were of sufficient interest to be worth recording; in particular the relation between the width of reef, electrode separation and shape of the curve, and the interference effect of constant separation curves over zones of float are significant and useful. Three new veins were located, but only one contained sufficient gold to warrant detailed prospection. This was called the Geophysical reef, and was uncovered over a strike distance of 1140 ft., and there are indications that it extends over a distance of 1990 ft. These results and the recom- mendations consequent therefrom were embodied in a special report to the Uganda Geological Survey. History OF the Field The Busia field is in the southeastern corner of Uganda near the Kenya-Uganda border, and is about 17 miles north of the northeastern corner of Lake Victoria. Gold was first discovered in the area in the stream beds by Davies1,2 in 1932. Subsequently numerous small alluvial claims were worked by prospectors and the area was prospected for reef by a company for periods varying from three to nine months, but was finally abandoned, as the results were considered unfavorable. Further prospecting by the Geological Survey in 1935-1936 under Davies8 and later under the writer4 uncovered three reefs with sufficient gold values to be of economic interest. These were finally taken over by a company known as Borderland Syndicate, which still owns the area, and from September 1937 to the end of 1941 about 13,000 oz. of gold was extracted from reefs of the area proved by the Geological Survey. Opencast mining operations are still proceeding (February 1943). The Amonikakine area lies to the immediate north of that of Borderland Syndicate. A certain amount of prospecting had been done when the writer started work there. As a result of his report, this area was taken over by another syndicate, but little further work was accomplished before it ceased operating because of difficulties of wartime working.

Twinned metal crystals are usually designated as either deformation twins or annealing twins. If twins are to be classified according to the treatment the metal has undergone just prior to the observation of the twins, there are two other possible groups: (1) solidification twins,† when observed in the as-solidified or as-cast condition, and (2) transformation twins,† when observed in a metal which has been cooled from above an allotropic transformation temperature. McKeehan has demonstrated that ferrite does, occasionally at least, contain twinned structures2. The twins, which he studied by optical methods, were obtained during the preparation of iron single crystals by very slow cooling through A3. He proved that the twin relation was actually that which previous investigators had predicted; namely, twinning along three planes of the form (112). Since McKeehan's discovery, little or no attention has been given to this transformation twinning of alpha iron, or to the possibility that it might occur at all speeds of cooling from above A3 instead of merely during the preparation of single crystals. McKeehan's twins were evidently regarded as interesting only in proving that a body-centered cubic metal could form twinned structures—at least under certain conditions. It is generally believed that iron seldom if ever forms annealing twins. Certainly the straight-line banding which is so abundant in annealed face-centered cubic metals is characteristically absent in iron annealed below A3. However, O'Neil13 has studied "twin-like" crystals in annealed alpha iron and concludes that the specimen he studied actually contailled a few annealing twins. Tamura4 as reported "twin-like" crystals both in wrought iron and mild steel; specimens of the latter were annealed above and below A3 and showed "twin-like" crystals after both kinds of treatments.

The Phosphoria formation of the northwestern states presents a stimulating challenge to workers in every field of mineral technology. In addition to its large reserves of phosphate, the formation has been found to contain important amounts of fluorine and several metals, such as vanadium, nickel, and molybdenum. Because these minor metals in the Phosphoria do not have their usual glitter, concentrations of them are not easily discovered nor appraised. Like the phosphate itself, production of these metals very likely can be achieved only through use of costly chemical methods, for their mineralogy precludes treatment by the usual methods. In addition, in much of the area the containing rocks lie in complexly folded and faulted structures, which complicate mining and increase its cost. Yet the chain of research necessary to establish what elements are present; their geographic and stratigraphic distribution and reserves; the most suitable methods for recovering them; the combination of beds which, when ruined and processed, will yield the greatest recovery of the most valuable elements; and the methods most adaptable to their profitable extraction may well lead to the development of an important mineral industry and may make possible a significaut reduction in the cost of fertilizer this in itself would be an achievement of momentous importance—and at the same time make the nation more self-sustaining in critical materials. WITH the exception of pneumatic processes and ii few special beneficiation methods of comparatively limited application, all mechanical coal-cleaning and mineral- dressing processes involve the admixture of solid particles with a liquid, generally water. Upon completion of the beneficiation process the solids must be reclaimed from the water. With coarse particles separation of solids from water is accomplished readily by the simple expedient of screening, but recovery of fine solids presents a much more difficult problem. Thickening and dewatering are practiced so generally, both within the mineral industry and else- where, that they have been the subject of study through the years and a number of processes for making the solid-liquid separation have been developed. Dorr-type thickeners have been standard equipment for many years, and more recently driers employing centrifugal force have gained in popularity. 1 A cyclone device employed to thicken the loess suspension is a novel feature of the loess heavy-medium coal-cleaning process developed by the Netherlands State Mines in the thirties. The cyclone thickener was first mentioned by Driessen2 in 1939 in a paper describing the loess process and has been the subject of two more recent reports by the same author.3 The cyclone does not differ greatly from cyclone dust collectors used in this country for years, except that it is operated wet rather than dry. Advantages of the cyclone over other thickening devices are its simplicity of construction, high capacity, and the fact that, having no moving parts, it is simple and inexpensive to operate. The Bureau of Mines became interested in the cyclone after one of the present authors observed it in operation in the Netherlands in 1945. The first experimental work with the cyclone conducted by the Bureau of Mines was an investigation of the unit functioning as a heavy-medium cleaner for fine coal-a use for the cyclone that was conceived long after it had been perfected as a thickener. The results of this investigation were published last year.4 The present investigation deals exclusively with operation of the cyclone as a thickener. OBJECT AND SCOPE OF INVESTIGATION Although the cyclone thickener has been dealt with in three reports by Driessen, its use as a thickener was not the principal subject of any of these reports and therefore neither the cyclone itself nor its operation was described completely. The design of the cyclone was described only in a very general way, only limited operating results were given, and virtually nothing was disclosed about the influence of the various possible operating variables. Moreover, the Netherlanders apparently had employed the cyclone exclusively for thickening loess and had not employed it on coal slurries. Some attention should be given to definitions. The term "unit operation " may have at least two meanings. One meaning is the merging of titles and the development and operation of the unitized area, as if it were one tract of land held under a single oil and gas lease, according to a definite program intended to accomplish a maximum recovery from the pool as a whole at a minimum of cost. It is incomplete when the royalty owners do not also merge their titles to their oil and gas rights in the area, and is complete when they do. The other meaning is not accompanied by any merger of titles, but the development and operation of the area is in accordance, as nearly as reasonably practicable, with such a program. This second conception may be nothing more than a cooperative development and operation plan, but in this paper it is regarded as more than that. If there cannot be unit operation without a merger of titles, it would seem that the state cannot require unit operation, for it cannot require a merging of titles; but if it may consist in requiring each and all of the leaseholders to develop and operate or to submit to a development and operation according to some such common plan as is referred to above without at the same time requiring a merger of titles, it would seem that unit operation may be required by the state. Whether the states have this power is the subject to be herein considered. If the state can so bind the several lessees, it also can so bind the several lessors. The writer does not know what would be an ideal plan for the development and operation of a pool; but it takes into account the fact that the accumulation of gas and oil is not uniform throughout the formation; that often free gas, highly compressed, occupies the upper portions of the reservoir, the oil with compressed gas in solution coming next in order; that at places oil is not overlain by free gas, and sometimes there are peaks where free gas is not immediately underlain by any oil; and the fact that these substances are held under a uniformly distributed pressure, generally referred to as "rock pressure." It also recognizes that the most efficient utilization of this naturally existing reservoir pressure in the recovery of the oil requires that there be no operation of wells completed into areas where gas only has accumulated, for this diminishes the

2.1-1. The Exploration Function in the Mineral Industry. With regard to a new mine, exploration can be technologically defined as all the activities and evaluations necessary before an intelligent decision can be made establishing size, initial flowsheet, and annual output of the new extractive operation based on a certain mineral deposit. The activities that follow such a decision are called first development, then operation (90). Thus, in the U.S.A., exploration may continue in the technological sense after a mineral property has entered the "development stage" as defined for tax purposes. Regulations under Sections 1.615.1 and 1.616.1 of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code state that the "development stage" has been reached when "deposits of ore or other minerals are shown to exist in sufficient quantity and quality to reasonably justify commercial exploitation by the taxpayer" (95). There are, of course, many instances where additional later exploration discloses additional reserves which justify a plant much larger, more efficient and more profitable than the minimum feasible commercial operation. After a surface mine is put into operation, additional search generally will increase the reserves and thus warrant expansion of the rate of output and/or extend the life of the operation. The methods and techniques in such search are similar to those used in predevelopment exploration. This activity has produced a major part of new reserves for all mineral commodities but is not considered as exploration in the context of this chapter. The objective of exploration is, briefly stated, to find and acquire a maximum number of new economic mineral deposits with a minimum cost and in minimum time. The search must be so organized as to maximize the overall probability of discovering commercial mineral concentrations within a minimum time with the funds available. As shown by Celasun (27) these statements are neither adequate nor complete from a pragmatic point of view. The nickel-chromium alloys form the base for many industrial heating alloys, so that this system is of considerable practical importance. The literature on these alloys, however, contains much conflicting evidence, not only regarding the solubility limits of the terminal solid solutions at different temperatures but even regarding the number of phases existing in the system. Part of the difficulty undoubtedly arises from the fact that chromium of sufficiently high purity has been available only during the last few years. A second and possibly even more important difficulty arises from the ease with which chromium reacts with silicon and carbon compounds and the atmosphere to form silicides, carbides, nitrides and oxides. Pilling and Kihlgrenl in 1929 reviewed the existing scanty information. They did not consider the diagram by which they summarized the various bits of information to be entirely satisfactory. Matsunaga2 investigated the system by thermal analysis, microscopic examination and other means. Electrolytic nickel of 99.9 per cent purity and thermit chromium containing 0.30 per cent Al, 0.40 per cent Fe, 0.25 per cent Si and 0.04 per cent C were used. A Tammann furnace with hydrogen flowing through it was used for melting. Sekito and Matsunaga3 reported an X-ray investigation, presumably on these same alloys, which, as far as can be judged from the abstract, essentially confirmed the thermal and microscopic results. Nishigori and Hamasumi4 found compositions for the terminal solid solutions in equilibrium at the eutectic temperature which agreed fairly

KNOWLEDGE of the theory underlying the behavior of mixtures of fluids in reservoir rocks is essential to the proper solution of certain types of problems in petroleum pro-duction, but is as yet incompletely devel-oped. The object of this paper is to show the application of well established thermody-namic and physical principles to these prob-lems, and thus to assist in the development of the basic theory. For convenience the problems to be considered here may be divided into two groups: I. Static problems, involving only the static balance between capillary forces and those due to the difference in densities of the fluids; i.e., gravitational forces. 2. Dynamic problems, involving analysis of the motion of mixtures of immiscible fluids in porous media under the influence of forces due to gravity, capillarity, and an impressed external pressure differential. CAPILLARY EQUILIBRIUM IN SANDS Under this heading the static type of problem will be discussed and the results of experimental investigations on the capillary properties of unconsolidated sands will be presented. Although the discussion of this section is, in a sense, prefatory to the treat-ment of problems of mixture flow, the con-cepts developed here have considerable intrinsic importance apart from their ap-plication to flow problems. For, it is reason-able to postulate that the reservoir fluids are, owing to their long existence in undis-turbed mutual contact prior to exploitation, in substantial equilibrium. It follows that their distribution in the reservoir at the time of tapping should be entirely predict-able from the theory of capillary equi-librium, provided certain experimentally measurable properties of the reservoir rock are known. Knowledge of the distribution of the several fluids in the reservoir is, of course, helpful in the estimation of reserves and in other problems. It is to be emphasized that throughout the discussion of capillary statics it is as-sumed that the fluids are in equilibrium from the capillary standpoint. Thus, water, where it is referred to as being in a reser-voir, will be understood to be interstitial water, present at the time of drilling the reservoir, commonly termed "connate" water. The theory developed here is perfectly general for any porous solid, whether a carefully prepared unconsolidated sand or a natural sandstone from an oil reservoir. At present, however, only problems in-volving clean, unconsolidated sands can be made to yield numerical solutions, since only such sands have been adequately in-vestigated experimentally. Experimental evaluation of the pertinent properties of natural reservoir rocks will permit the ex-tension of the numerical treatment to prob-lems involving these materials. We shall now consider in some detail the static equilibrium of fluid mixtures in porous solids; that is, the manner in which the reservoir fluids are distributed vertically when the forces due to capillarity are just balanced by those due to gravitation.

THE scope of this article covers only the mathematical principles involved in discounting to present worth future expected profits and it is believed answers definitely two questions, which were raised at a recent meeting of the Committee on Methods of Valuing Coal Properties, as follows: 1. The accumulative effect of carrying charges on the value of coal mines showing definitely the number of years beyond which the coal may not be mined at a profit and subsequent to which the possession of any unmined coal will be a liability rather than an asset. 2. The effect on the valuation of coal mines, in the presence of the carrying charges described in question 1, of an increase in plant capacity and production. In general, in considering these questions, it may be stated that the consideration of an increase in plant capacity and production follows as a matter of course after a determination has been made of the year beyond which no profits are to be realized (giving the carrying. charges accumulative effect, or in other words capitalizing the carrying charges, as shown hereinafter). For example, if it is determined that any coal that is unmined after 45 years will have no value or less than no value, the question immediately arises as to whether or not a plant should be constructed that would result in a yearly production great enough to extract the entire tonnage in a time less than 45 years, and if so the number 'of years less than 45 years that would, from a financial stand-point, be the most desirable, all under the assumption that the market for the product or the transportation facilities are such that the yearly production can be increased to the desired amount.

A process has been developed which produces spodumene concentrates assaying 6.0 pct Li2O and 0.45 pct Fe2O3, with 70 to 75 pct recovery of spodumene. Two flotation separations are required: the simultaneous removal of mica, feldspar, and quartz as a froth product using a cationic collector, and the subsequent removal of iron-bearing minerals as a froth product while spodumene is depressed as a tailing. SINCE the close of World War II there have been numerous developments resulting in the increased use of lithium by industry. Notable among these has been the development of an industrial lubricant, based on lithium stearate, which is fluid at low temperatures, stable at high temperature, and insoluble in water. A new bleaching agent, lithium hypo-chlorite, has also been developed recently.' Other well-known uses are listed below: 1—Lithium oxide in ceramics reduces firing time, lowers melting temperatures, lowers thermal expansion, raises refractive index, and improves chemical resistivity. 2—Lithium carbonate and lithium strontium nitrate are used in pyrotechnics for their brilliant red color.' 3—Lithium chlorides and fluorides are used as fluxes for welding aluminum and magnesium.' 4—The affinity of lithium for nitrogen is the basis for a process used in purifying helium." 5— Lithium chlorides and bromides are used in air conditioning for their powers to absorb organic amines, ammonia, and smoke.6-—Lithium hydride has been used as a source of hydrogen to inflate life rafts and balloons used by the Air Forces and Navy.' 7— Lithium metal and lithium hydride are useful in the atomic energy program in connection with the production of the isotopes of hydrogen." During the 1942-45 period of World War 11, Solvay Process Co. operated a flotation plant with a daily capacity of 300 tons of ore for the production of spodumene concentrate near Kings Mountain, North Carolina. The operation was shut down upon reduction of wartime demand for lithium chemicals, and until recently there has been no production from the Carolinas. In April 1950 an investigation of the problem of spodumene flotation from North Carolina ores was begun at North Carolina State College Minerals Research Laboratory at Asheville, N. C. This laboratory, operating under the combined auspices of North Carolina State College, North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, undertook the spodumene project at the request of Foote Mineral Co. of Philadelphia. The work, involving a period of 15 months of intensive batch and pilot plant investigation, was completed in June 1951 and resulted in development of a process for concentration of spodumene by flotation which has been hereto unrecorded in the literature. A similar approach has been used before on iron, ilmenite, and other minerals, but the literature shows no record of its having been applied to spodumene. Parts of the process are now being used on a commercial scale at the Foote Mineral Co. plant near Kings Mountain, N. C., which has been in production since July 1951. It is the purpose of this paper to describe some of the results of the investigation. The Orebodies Spodumene-bearing pegmatites occur in a narrow belt 24.5 miles long and 1.8 miles wide extending southwestward from Lincolnton to Grover, N. C. According to statements judged to be conservative, the tin-spodumene belt of the Carolinas contains an estimated 4,300,000 tons of pegmatite ore averaging 15 pct spodumene. This amounts to "a reserve of at least 650,000 tons of spodumene (more than 20,000 tons of metallic lithium) to a depth of 100 ft."' This figure includes only bodies having an average thickness of 35 ft and length of 550 ft. There are hundreds of pegmatites in the belt, many of which are less than 10 ft wide. Natural gas has been known to exist for many years in the St. Lawrence Valley, between Quebec and Montreal, and more partirularly in the vicinity of Louisville and Three Rivers, 74 and 94 miles respectively northeast of Montreal, and 98 and 78 miles respectively southwest of Quebec; the distance from Montreal to Quebec along the St. Lawreuce River being about 175 miles. It was not until 1880 that any practical explorations were begun with the hope of finding gas in sufficient quantities for commercial uses. In this year Messrs. Piret and Genest, of Three Rivers, sank a well near St. Maurice to a depth of 50 feet, where solid rock was encountered. A similar well was drilled through the glacial and allavial drift, in the same district, in 1883, by the Messrs. Renaud Freres and Dubois, to a depth of 70 feet before solid rock was encountered. In this latter well a strong flow of gas was obtained. The gas was an outflow from a very limited reservoir in the porous glacial gravel, which had been filled from the gas resulting from the decomposition of vegetable remains, which had been buried in the gravel at the time of its deposition. Subsequently, other wells were sunk in the same way, with the hope of getting gas in commercial quantities from similar reservoirs. The dependence of the electrical and crystalline properties of silicon containing ion implanted boron atoms have been studied as a function of the incident dose, substrate temperature, and annealing tempera-ture. Hall effect studies show that the compensation due to defects is negligible after annealing at and above 500°C for a dose of 1013 ions per sq cm. Steps occur in the isochronal annealing curve for the sheet resistance at 300°C and 800°C and the mechanisms responsible for these steps are discussed. The range of the ions at 150 kev is 3500 * 5001. Electron diffraction studies on samples implanted with 150 ker ions show the existence of damaged (polycrystalline) silicon closer to the surface than the range of the ions. Etching and subsequent annealing of etched and unetched specimens suggest that the poly crystalline silicon is closer to the surface than the bulk of the distribution of ions. THE purpose of this study is to investigate some electrical and crystalline properties of ion implanted boron in silicon. Sheet resistance, Hall measurement, depth distribution by chemical staining, thermal probe and electron diffraction have been used to study the properties of samples implanted in a random direction with ions having energy up to 150 kev. The boron-silicon system has been the subject of considerable study'-7 due to its possible application in the fabrication of electronic devices. The implanted ions produce considerable crystalline damage to the substrate crystal before they lose most of their primary energy and come to rest. Fortunately, most, if not all, of this damage can be removed by subsequent annealing or by holding the substrate at an elevated temperature during the implantation process. Sheet resistivity measurements of the p-type layers produced by boron implantation into room-temperature silicon, reveal that the annealing occurs in a two-step process: the first occurring at -300°C and the second at -800°C.' Electron-microscope and low-angle electron diffraction studies of this damaged material indicate that the bombarding ions produce an amorphous silicon region about the trajectory of each ion.' At high doses, these damaged regions overlap and an amorphous surface layer results. Furthermore, the 800°C annealing step, appears to be associated with the elimination of this gross damage. The depth distribution of the as-implanted and also the annealed samples have been studied by an angle lap and staining technique as well as by Hall measurements.3-7 We find the experimentally determined ranges of the boron are less than those calculated by the Lindhard-Scharff-Schiott theorys (hereafter referred to as the LSS theory). Our results are in essential agreement with pre- vious results. In addition, we have made Hall measurements on samples bombarded with a low dose (2 x 1013 ions per sq cm) to minimize impurity banding effects, and find that deep ionized levels influence the carrier concentration and room-temperature hole mobility until the sample is annealed at temperatures above 500°C. Above this temperature, the data corresponds to that obtained when silicon is doped with boron by conventional techniques. We have also made a depth distribution determination of the crystalline damage due to the implanted boron by using glancing angle electron diffraction techniques. It was found that the gross damage depth distribution of heavily implanted samples is closer to the surface than the depth distribution of the electrically active boron. By removing this gross damage, without affecting the distribution of the implanted boron, we have determined that the 800°C annealing stage is not exclusively due to the improvement in the crystalline perfection of the amorphous material but also appears to be associated with the annealing of some point defects. These results and their relation to previous results are discussed in the following sections. Rocks In the area include a pyroxene granite, a hornblende granite, a quartz-oligoclase gneiss and a pegmatite and its host rock, a lens of amphibolite which becomes a sulfide-rich pyroxenite near the ore zone. The ore-bearing zone occurs along the hanging wall and foot-wall contact of the pegmatite which was emplaced discordantly into the amphibolite-pyroxenite.
