FRONTIERS of geological knowledge retreated further this past year before an ever-widening geophysical attack, as governments and endowed institutions continued to take an increasing practical interest in the geophysical line of approach to the study of earth phenomena. A year ago I opened this annual review with a brief account of the efforts to discover what formations lie concealed beneath the deep sediments which form the superficial portions of the Continental Shelf off the eastern United States. That work was but the beginning, and 1938 saw its continuation and expansion. With the assistance of a Guggenheim Fellowship, Maurice Ewing pushed his researches in the development of instruments and techniques for deep-sea seismic refraction studies. Ewing's early refraction profile from the Virginia Capes to the edge of the Continental Shelf has been followed by a similar traverse in Great Britain from the coast of Cornwall to the edge of the Continental Shelf southwest of England. This showed that the thickness of the sedimentary mantle and the rates of slope of the basement surfaces there are comparable to those in the Virginia Cape district.

THE anodic treatment of aluminum presents problems of scientific as well as of commercial interest.1-3 Of particular interest is the fact that, during the anodic oxidation process, the oxide continues to form at the metal-oxide interface under any oxide previously formed. This has led to speculation as to the mechanism involved in the formation of the relatively thick oxide coatings that are used commercially for decorative or protective purposes. Furthermore, the ability of certain types of oxide coatings to adsorb dyes and other substances has stimulated research to determine the actual structure of these adsorptive coatings. It has been found that anodic oxide coatings on aluminum are composed essentially of aluminum oxide. They are formed by the action of oxygen ions penetrating to the metal surface during the electrolytic oxidation treatment. These coatings can be formed in a number of different electrolytes, as for example, those which contain sulphuric acid, chromic acid, oxalic acid, or boric acid. These are the commonest and most useful electrolytes employed commercially. Except for certain specific conditions of formation, the coatings in general have been found to be amorphous alumina, as far as can be determined by X-ray or electron-diffraction methods. Anodic oxidation processes can be arranged in three rather general classes if they are grouped in relation to the solvent action of the electrolyte on the coating.4 In the first class, the electrolyte has little or no solvent action on the coating that is formed. In general, coatings produced under such circumstances are nonporous and non- adsorptive. In the second class, the electrolyte exerts an appreciable solvent action on the coating. These coatings are porous and adsorptive. Finally, for the third class, the electrolyte tends to dissolve the coating about as rapidly as it is formed. This action produces electrolytic brightening or anodic polishing of the aluminum surface and at most leaves only a very thin film of oxide. The nonporous and nonadsorptive type of oxide film is represented by the coatings that are formed when solutions of boric acid are employed as the electrolyte. It is especially significant that these impervious films are formed in electrolytes that exert little or no solvent action on the coating. Where a boric acid electrolyte is used, the coating tends to form rapidly, with the result that the flow of current is soon reduced to substantially zero. This indicates that the growth of the coating has stopped. As a rule, the thickness of the coating is roughly proportional to the voltage employed for formation and the coatings of this type are exceedingly thin. RELATIVELY few data have been collected on the rates of diffusion in ternary solid solution systems. In general it does not seem worth while to gather extensive data for such systems until the factors that determine the rates of diffusion in binary systems are better understood. But the rates of diffusion in a ternary system of limited solid solubility, in which the terminal solid solution is in equilibrium with an intermediate phase and may thus be represented as a quasibinary system, represents a case of special interest. In this case, where by reason of the association of the two solute metals in an intermediate phase a special attraction of the two solute atoms may be safely assumed, some interaction of these atoms during simultaneous diffusion in the solvent lattice might be expected. It has frequently been proposed that molecular solid solutions exist in quasibinary and in other ternary (and binary) solid solutions. There is no direct evidence for such solid solutions; arguments based upon the supposed anomaly in certain physical properties1 are hardly important; unexpected density relationships have proved deceptive ;2 suggestions of molecular solid solutions have been made on the basis of solution laws in their application to certain systems, but without result;3 attempts to find lattice parameters in the solid solution Al-MgZn2, which cannot be calculated from the separate effects of magnesium and zinc and might therefore be taken as evidence for a molecular aggregation, have given negative results.4 Fundamentally, methods for the determination of the state of molecu¬lar aggregation in solution depend upon the kinetic behavior of the par-ticles constituting the system. If it could be shown that the two solutes in a quasibinary ternary system diffuse in molecular proportions, despite a radical difference in the separate rates of diffusion of each solute when diffusing alone in the solvent lattice, some basis for the concept of molecu-lar solid solution would be afforded. INTRODUCTION IN the sinking of bore holes, there are but two fundamental operations -drilling and hoisting,-which determine in the main the character of drilling mechanism and structures. There are endless ramifications, however, in the execution of these fundamental operations, according to the purposes for which the bore holes are drilled, their maintenance after completion, the protection and convenience of workmen, etc. The three main lines of use for bore holes are in mineral exploration, the sinking of water and salt wells, and the exploitation of petroleum and natural gas. This paper has to do more especially with the last. Here again there are many divergences. Wells may be drilled by either the percussive, the hydraulic, or the abrasive method. Finally, each of these methods, as applied by drillers of diverse nationalities, has followed somewhat different lines of development. The American system of cable-tool drilling has perhaps had the widest application; the hydraulic rotary is also in extensive use; but the Canadian system, the Galician system, and the Russian free-fall system all have their points of recognized merit and are preferred by operators accustomed to their use. These differences in drilling procedure, which rest ultimately on essential variations in geological conditions, are reflected in the chilling structures as well as in the drilling mechanism. The purpose of the present paper is to record those stages in the development of the application of steel to the construction of drilling mechanism and structures with which the writer has been intimately associated, and to contribute to the history of the art of drilling other data acquired in the course of his personal investigations. It is necessarily limited by reason of space to American practice, with especial reference, therefore, to the cable-tool system and the hydraulic rotary method of drilling wells for oil and gas.

SINCE my communication to the Institute at the Baltimore meeting in 1879,* in which I took the lead in emphasizing the importance of a new method in the manufacture of soda, already practiced to some extent in England and on the Continent of Europe, five years have passed. I.then referred particularly to the advantages offered in the United States for this peculiar method, by the ammonia process, namely: 1. At the present time, at least, we have but one mine in this country where rock-salt is mined, namely, at New Iberia, La. On the other hand, we have many localities where brine of various degrees of strength, up to that of cold saturation, is obtained in large quantities. 2. We have excellent fuel, in close proximity to most of the brinecenters. 3. Our supplies of pyrites, to use in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, for use in the manufacture of soda by the Leblanc process, are mostly too far from the brine-centers to permit competition in that line with the more favorable conditions existing in England. 4. Unlike our foreign rivals, we have no large and costly plants, erected on the Leblanc plan, which must be abandoned and exchanged for new but cheaper plants, before the ammonia-soda process can be adopted. 5. We have a constantly increasing demand for soda, which is almost entirely supplied by importation. If slow progress has been made hitherto in this country in the extension of this manufacture (only one plant at Syracuse, erected . under the Solvay patent, having as yet been placed in operation), I still feel gratified in saying that developments in England, and particularly on the Continent of Europe, give ample proof of the

INTRODUCTION The administrative processes of coal mines are becoming increasingly complex. As society evolves into a more complicated structure with greater emphasis on individuality, government regulations reach deeply into every activity in an effort to force individuals into a standardized mold. These contradictory pressures add an extra burden to the administration of a mining operation. Recent years have brought a substantial change in the skills needed by mine supervisors and managers. As a result, a better understanding of the administrative functions is necessary. The mine superintendent has the overall responsibility for the mine; for effective operation he must be sufficiently knowledgeable to oversee all the complex functions that make up the mine. This chapter does not cover all the administrative requirements because of the variation in mine operation and in company policies and organizational structure. It does attempt to identify the administrative functions that would be required at a large mine with a preparation plant. It is assumed that the mine operation is decentralized with very little duplication of functions at the organizational levels above the mine. Thus each function is assumed to be relatively complete at the mine and under the general supervision of the mine superintendent. EMPLOYMENT PROCEDURES Throughout the mining industry, in deep or surface mining, in union or nonunion companies, the success or failure of an organization is directly related to the caliber of employees who make up the organization. THE problem of surface support in coal mining is naturally divided into three branches: 1. Surface covered with improvements of such value as compared with the value of the underlying coal, or with such elements of danger to mining, that absolute support is essential. 2. Surface with improvements of less value than the underlying coal such that moderate settlement may be permitted, but destructive settlement must be avoided, either by reason of danger to human life or unwarranted property damage. 3. Surface of relatively small value as compared with the underlying coal where destructive settlement may be permitted. First Problem In the first case it is evident that the original support must be maintained either (a) by leaving ample pillars and confining the coal recovery to a very conservative first mining, (b) by so supporting less conservative first mining by filling or flushing that the gradual deterioration of the pillars may be prevented and subsidence avoided, or (c) by incompressible support as masonry either as an adjunct to insufficient pillars or in place of the original coal support. a. From tests made by the Scranton Engineers Club, it appears safe to figure on 2000 lb. per sq. in. as the safe squeezing strength of coal pillars in place, provided that these are, as usual, not higher than their least horizontal dimension; and from this figure the percentage of pillar to be left for various depths may be easily calculated. EARLY this year the Board of Directors announced that, through the generous gift of past-president W. L. Saunders, a gold medal to be awarded for distinguished achievement in mining had been estab-lished. At the December meeting of the Board the medal committee reported that it recommended that the first medal be awarded to David William Brunton for "development and exposition of the principles and prac-tice of ore sampling; for systematic daily mapping of mine geology; for the Brunton mining compass; and for engineering achievements in connection with great tunnels." The formal presentation of the medal will be at the din-ner, on Feb. 16, in connec-tion with the annual meet-ing. Mr. Brunton, like several other prominent Institute members, was born in Can-ada, and came to the United States when he was twenty-four years old. He had then been in civil en-gineering work for three years and after a year more of it, deciding that mining was more attrac-tive he spent two years at the University of Michigan doing advanced work in geology a n d chemistry. His first mining engage-ment was with the Dakota and San Juan Mining Co., at Mineral Point, Ouray County, Colo. That was in June, 1875, and the young engineer had to travel 230 miles by trail from the then nearest railroad station at Pueblo. Having to come out because the company did not get in enough supplies to last through the winter he became metallurgist for the Hunt, Douglas & Stewart Co., at Georgetown, Colo. When the Hunt and Douglas plant proved a success, H. A. Taylor, the father of Mr. Brunton's later partner, Frank M. Taylor, engaged him to build the Clear Creek Reduction Works. Eighteen months later he built the Native Silver Mining Co. mill at Caribou and a year later a mill at Silver Peak, Nev., that was so successful that the principal owner shut it down to freeze out the minority stockholders. The winter of 1879 found him at Leadville where he did engineering work for the Robert E. Lee, Duncan, Wolftone, A. Y. & Minnie, and Dinero mines, eventually becoming manager of the Colonel Sellers. In 1886 he was called in on apex-side-line litigation at Aspen with the result that he went there to develop the mines for economic and legal pur-poses, and later became the manager of three of them. THE present note, which was given in the form of a Research in Progress item,' traces the origin of secondary recrystallization grains produced on annealing a cold rolled bicrystal specimen. The investigation began with the realization that a recently acquired conception for the origin of secondary grains produced on annealing cold rolled single-crystal specimens might require modifications for the case of polycrystalline materials. The stated conception2,3 begins with several conditions to be met by primary recrystallization: 1—a primary re-crystallization structure to consist of many small primaries and relatively few large primaries (diam- eters two or three times the average); 2—a primary recrystallization texture to consist of one strong preferred orientation or component and one or more weak components; and 3—a primary recrystalliza-tion structure-texture combination with some of the large primaries belonging to the weak components of the texture. It has been suggested, for some time, that the behavior of metals under high-temperature creep conditions is strongly influenced by the behavior of the grain boundaries present in the material. This has led to a number of investigations1-6 in which attempts were made to measure the properties of the grain boundaries themselves, both to determine their contribution to the creep process and to obtain further knowledge of their intrinsic structure and properties. The present investigation was undertaken to extend the observed data under more closely controlled experimental conditions and to attempt to clarify sonie of the discrepancies in the literature. A brief report of the preliminary results has been published.7 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE For the present investigation, controlled orientation specimens were used having plane boundaries which terminated at the specimen surface. Trierys-tal specimens were used instead of the bicrystal type of Puttick and King,' in order to simplify the gripping technique required to apply a shear stress along the boundary. The aluminum used was obtained from the Aluminum Francaise and was of 99.994 pct purity, containing 0.002 pct each of Cu, Fe, and Si. The aluminum tricrystals were grown horizontally from the melt, in graphite boats, and in an argon atmosphere, following the technique developed by Chalmers.' The orientation of the tricrystals was controlled by using seed crystals separated by mica inserts. Thermal conditions were adjusted to produce tricrystals having boundaries which were macroscopically straight, parallel to the growth direction, and perpendicular to the top surface. Following growth, the tricrystals were carefully cut with a jeweller's saw to the test specimen shapes shown in Fig. l(a) and l(b). In Fig. 1(a), the boundaries subjected to shear stresses are indicated AB and CD: Points A and C are the ends of the mica inserts separating the seed crystals; points B and D are at lateral cuts made in the specimen. It was found that the slots left by the mica inserts at A and C had to be enlarged slightly, by cutting, to ensure that the boundary terminated freely at these points. A shear stress was applied to the boundarks by gripping the upper two legs in file-faced Inconel grips and suspending a weight from the lower part of the specimen held in similar grips, as shown schematically in the diagram. THE origin of the Mine-Rescue Service of the State of Illinois can be traced to two distinct sources, the work of the Rescue Station at Urbana and the Cherry disaster. During the early part of the year 1909, the Technologic Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey, now the Bureau of Mines, in connection with the Illinois Geological Survey and the College of Engineering of the University of Illinois, established at the University of Illinois, in Urbana, a branch rescue-station to supplement the work of the Pittsburg station of the Geological Survey. As a result of the work of training at the station in Urbana by R. Y. Williams, mining engineer, and James Webb, foreman of the Bureau of Mines, and the use of the helmets at several mine-accidents in the State of Illinois, . the people of the State were somewhat familiar with oxygen-helmets when the Cherry disaster occurred, in November, 1910. The oxygen-helmets were successfully used in connection with that disaster, and upon the recommendation of the Illinois Mining Investigation Commission, the Legislature of the State, assembled in special session during the winter of 1910, passed a bill appropriating $75,000 for the erection and maintenance of three rescue-stations, stipulating that they should be located in the northern, central, and southern parts of the State. The Act also provided that the stations should be in charge of a Commission of seven, two representing the United Mine Workers of Illinois, two the mine-operators, one the Federal Bureau of Mines, one the State mine-inspectors, and one the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Illinois. A simple physical model has been developed to fit carrier-removal data in silicon irradiated near room temperature with reactor spectrum neutrons. Commonly observed donor and acceptor defect energy levels are assumed to be introduced linearly with neutron fluence. The donor levels (in ev) are Ev + 0.16, Ev + 0.27, and Ev + 0.31 and the acceptor levels are Ec - 0.55, Ec - 0.40, and Ec - 0.1 7, where Ev and Ec are the valence and conduction band energies, respectively. The introduction rates of each level are adjusted to fit literature initial carrier-removal rate data. When normalized with respect to the Ev +0.27 level, the relative values of introduction rates are 5.3, 1.0, 3.1, 1.0, 2.0, and 20.0, respectively for the six levels indicated above. To fit p-f (hole concentration vs neutron fluence) and n-f (electron concentration us neutron fluence) data, the introduction rates are multiplied by a factor which preserves the relative values given above. This factor depends upon irradiation temperature, reactor energy spectrum, neutron fluence calibration, and oxygen content of silicon. An extensive study of the effect of neutrons on carrier-removal in silicon irradiated with reactor spectrum neutrons (E > 10 kev) has been given by Stein and Gereth1 (SG) and Curtis, Bass, and Germano' (CBG). They measured initial carrier-removal rates for both p- and n-type silicon over an impurity range typical of silicon devices. In this work, we attempt to fit a simple theory to this data to establish a usable relationship between hole and electron concentration, p and n, respectively, and neutron fluence f. The p-f and n-f relations are needed to assist in the design of neutron tolerant silicon devices and are needed to clarify presently used empirical resistivity-fluence relationships.3 Neutron damage in silicon produces a variety of defects ranging from simple point defects to defect clusters. For the purpose of this treatment, we assume that simple point defects dominate carrier-removal effects. In contrast to this view, stein4 has proposed that defect clusters are responsible for a significant portion of carrier-removal effects. In the following section, it is shown that the carrier-removal effect in n-type silicon with an electron concentration less than 1015 cm-3 can be explained adequately by assuming that the divacancy is the dominant defect and that its introduction rate is independent of the electron concentration. For electron concentrations greater than 1015 cm-= an additional acceptor defect center is needed, and for simplicity the A-center (vacancy-oxygen pair) has been chosen. Although the E-center (vacancy-phosphorus pair) can account for some of the results, the A-center was chosen because the E-center requires a more involved treatment which the presently available data do not justify. In p-type silicon three radiation-induced donor levels are assumed, namely the divacancy and two other centers of unspecified nature located at Ev + 0.16 ev and Ev to 0.31 ev. The donor divacancy at Ev + 0.27 ev is assumed to be introduced at the same rate in p-type as in n-type. However, this rate is too low to fit p-type initial carrier-removal data. The dominant centers in p-type silicon are assumed to be the Ev + 0.16 ev and Ev + 0.31 ev levels where the latter is not the divacancy. The introduction rates are chosen to fit initial carrier-removal rate data. Assuming that the introduction rates are independent of Fermi level, the ratio between them is fixed for subsequent p-f and n-f calculations. Using the same ratios, the initial carrier-removal rate data1,2 as well as p-f and n-f data1,5 can be fit provided the absolute value of the introduction rates are adjusted to account for irradiation temperature, reactor energy spectrum, neutron fluence calculation, and the oxygen content of silicon. THEORETICAL ANALYSIS This analysis is basically the same as that used by Hi116 to analyze electron damage in silicon except we express the degree to which an impurity level is ionized not in terms of the Fermi level, but in terms of carrier concentration. Landis and pearson7 have used the latter approach to analyze y-damage in silicon. Neutron-induced defects responsible for carrier-removal at room temperature are assumed to be simple point defects with no interaction between defects so that they may be represented by discrete energy levels. It is also assumed that no constituent of a defect complex is used up and defects stabilize shortly after irradiation. Defects are assumed to be introduced linearly with fluence according to the product Rtf where Rt is the defect introduction rate and f the neutron fluence. Taking into account the ionization of defects according to Fermi statistics, and considering charge neutrality where minority carriers are neglected, the n-f relation is where no is the preirradiation electron concentration. The parameter Nt is the electron concentration at which the ionized defect concentration is one-half the total defect concentration (Rtf) or where Et is the defect energy level. For silicon at 300°K, ni = 1.45 X 1010 cm-3 and Ei = Ev+ 0.542 ev which was determined using Ec — Ev = 1.11 ev and me* = 1.07 mo and mh* = 0.558m0. THE equilibrium diagram of the indium-thallium system was of interest to us in connection with a study of the superconducting properties of metallic solid solutions in progress at this Institute. For this purpose, a series of alloys was prepared covering the range from pure indium to 75 atomic pet TI, and X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained. Roughly speaking, the results indicated a region of continuous decrease in the axial ratio of the face-centered tetragonal structure from the value ca. 1.08 in pure indium to unity at about 23 atomic pct TI. From this concentration to the solubility limit, the structure was face-centered cubic, a form not reported by Hansen.1 At this point we became aware of the work of Valentiner,2 who had found the same structures at room temperature but had not investigated further the relationship between them. To study the transformation f.c.c.??f.c.t., and to clarify the phase diagram, we undertook the work reported in this paper and that which follows." Preparation of Alloys Pure indium and thallium* (both about 99.9 pct, as estimated from spectroscopic analyses) were weighed out in quantities sufficient to prepare 10 to 25 g of alloy of the desired concentration. (Occasionally indium was mixed with a previously pre- pared solution.) The metals were melted over a flame, in an open graphite crucible, stirred with a graphite rod, and poured into a graphite trough. The rough slug was hammered and swaged into a rod of 2 to 3 mm diam, and annealed in a drying oven at about 125°C for 1 to 2 days. Samples were taken from the rod for analysis, as well as for diffraction and other measurements. The thallium was determined by electrometric titration, using a modification of the method of Beale and co-workers.' The precision of analysis was generally about 2 0.2 pct of the thallium content. The rods were sometimes found to vary in thallium content as much as 1.5 pct from end to end, but since analyses were also made close to the segments used in the various studies, the composition was usually known as accurately as the analyses could be made. Where one less significant figure is given, the error is estimated to be ±0.4 pct of the thallium content. X-Ray Diffraction Measurements Three different cameras were used: (1) A 7 cm Debye camera, with oscillating specimen (manufactured by the Picker X-ray Corp., Cleveland, Ohio); (2) a 9 cm diam Debye camera of the type designed by Bradley;" (3) a 10 cm diam symmetrical focusing back-reflection camera (manufactured by Geo. C. Wyland, Ramsay, N. J.). Samples were prepared from the homogenized rods, either by filing under liquid nitrogen, or more often, in the form of wires or foils made by working at room temperature or liquid nitrogen temperature. Sharp patterns were obtained from specimens annealed at room temperature, although higher annealing temperatures were also used (cf. below). For a great many years fusion welding has been used in and around petroleum refineries, but it is only within six or seven years that the more important pressure vessels have been constructed by this process, because before that time the properties of fusion welds would not withstand such rigorous service. Since the adoption of fusion welding for the construction of this equipment, the refiner has required pressure vessels suitable for operation over a very wide range of conditions. On the one hand, vessels must operate at extremely high temperatures, in the range of 950" to 1000° F., and on the other vessels must be suitable for operation at sub-zero temperatures down as low as —75" F. Also, vessels are required suitable for operation at pressures upwards of 1000 lb. per sq. in., and as low as a 29-in. vacuum. In addition, vessels are required to withstand the attack of very corrosive mediums. It has been a rather difficult task for the fabricator to meet all of these requirements, but as a result of the extensive research carried on by steel manufacturers and several fabricators of class I vessels, practically all of these demands have been met. In order to meet the refiners' requirements for this wide range of conditions, the fabricator has worked closely with the metallurgist. This has enabled him to choose the proper base metal for each service condition, but it has been the fabricator's problem to develop a welding rod and welding technique, as well as a heat-treatment, that would produce in the welded vessel characteristics in and around the weld comparable to those in the base metal. Where corrosion is not a serious problem, and where the operating temperatures are not too high, ordinary carbon steel has served very well. But, when corrosion is serious, and/or when the temperatures are either very high or very low, it is necessary to use some form of alloy steel to give satisfactory service.
