Spots Goblenski fluffed up his pork chop sideburns, checked the angle of his wide brim Stetson and ambled off the airplane. The pert Braniff hostess stood smartly at the door. "Goodbye now, take care," she said in the special airline stewardess voice superimposed on a Texas drawl. Spots smirked, "You betcha, Peaches, you too." It was a crystal clear, sunny day which New York can have at any season of the year (but rarely gets credit for) and being in high spirits Spots did not mind being captured by a cab driver. That is the cab driver brushed aside all other conversation to give a continuous colorful commentary on New York politics, revealing in the process that only the very wealthy and cab drivers share the same political views in that city. After installing himself in the fading opulence of the Hotel Roosevelt, he finished the day with a steak dinner with baked potato under sour cream and hearts of lettuce salad with Roquefort dressing at the Black Angus restaurant. The next morning he had an appointment with Hemphill, Frye and Louderdock. The offices of this prestigious firm of management consultants are high in the Pan Am Building. He was courteously received by a lacquered receptionist and was soon escorted into the presence of Mr. John Smith. "Ah, Mr. Goblenski; Spots, isn't it? Hope you had a good flight. Lovely weather we are having. Just make yourself comfortable over there, Spots." Smith seemed cordial and Spots slipped comfortably into the interview. He had always thought that management consultants were evolved from the "efficiency experts" made famous by the radio team, Amos and Andy. He associated the modern version with computers, PERT and other systems approaches. He was surprised that one of these firms was apparently acting as an employment agency. "Of course" continued Smith, "in evaluation of basic criteria of performance moduli, the human element enters, Spots, and that brings us to you." Spots sat up and focused his attention.

This paper was prepared as a supplement to the general review by Dr. N. G. W. Cook. His analysis of the problem in terms of the strain energy involved in making the excavation is excellent. It will contribute much towards a clearer understanding of rock behavior and control. Several of the practical applications described herein can be directly related to Dr. Cook's theories and conclusions, and are based on the very same principles. CONTROLLED BLASTING IN ROCK EXCAVATION Generally speaking, the natural rock is a relatively strong and competent structural material, if we conserve its inherent good properties and perhaps reinforce its weak spots. The difficulty often lies in blasting out the tunnel or chamber without damaging the walls and roof we wish to have remain afterwards. Much progress has been made in the last five years in better understanding the controlled excavation of rock. The specialized techniques known as smooth wall blasting and presplit blasting have now developed from the status of curiosities of rock excavation to the point where these techniques are specified in contracts drawn up for such rock excavation projects as tunnels, underground pourer houses, etc. These techniques have been well described and discussed in previous publications; there is no need to reiterate here. It might be well to point out that recent research has demonstrated the effect that inherent rock stress may have on presplitting in certain directions. Material can be presplit most readily parallel to the direction of maximum compressive stress, and this may not always be in the direction desired. Inherent rock stress measurements by stress relief over coring, etc., may have important value in deciding how to best presplit proposed excavations. The existence of a grain size stabilization effect on martensitic type reactions as shown by Scheill in an iron-29 pct nickel alloy and by Troiano and Tokich2 in cobalt prompted a review of other martensitic reactions to determine if this stabilization effect is characteristic of all martensite type reactions. Preliminary work has shown this effect to be present both in the gamma —+ epsilon transformation in an iron-20 pct manganese alloy and the martensite transformation of SAE 4140 and 3 pct Cr-O.40 pct steels. No appreciable effect was found in an SAE 2340 steel. The M, temperature for the gamma —+ epsilon transformation was lowered from 380°F to about room temperature by varying the annealing treatment following cold work as shown in Table I. The effect of austenitic grain size on the M, of three steels is shown in Table 2. M, was deter- mined by the conventional quench-temper method of Greninger and Troiano. In a single crystal the change in external shape concomitant with the homogeneous shear mechanism of the martensite transformation can take place unhindered. In a polycrystalline specimen a restraint of these changes must occur at the grain boundaries. Therefore, the smaller the grain size the greater the shear strain energy necessary for the formation of a martensite crystal. The degree of lowering of M, due to the reduction of grain size is much greater when the change in crystal structure involves only a small energy change, such as face-centered cubic —+ close packed hexagonal (that is, CO and Fe-20 pct manganese alloy). The maximum lowering of M, observed in the steels investigated was 50°F with a change in the ASTM austenitic grain size of 1-2 to 8-9. In comparison, the crystal structure change face-centered cubic —+ body-centered tetragonal involves a considerable energy change. There is little doubt that with much finer grain sizes the increased grain boundary restraint would greatly enhance this stabilization effect. The implications of this phenomenon are multifold. In the winter of 1895 to 1896, during the construction of the Jackson and Cincinnati railroad, running from Addison, Lenawee county, Mich., to Jackson, Mich., in a northerly direction, I had occasion to observe some interesting geological features, described below, in a cut of this railroad made through the low ridge of gravel and sand, dividing the valley of Silver Lake and Silver Creek from the Goose Lake and Goose Creek valley, in Lenawee county. The surface-deposits of this part of the county are, as is well known, of glacial origin. Gently rounded, long ridges of sand, gravel and clay intervene between the marshy bottoms and the lakes of the valleys. The nature of the deposits, varying from a sandy clay or clayey sand to fine and coarse gravel and pure siliceous sand on the one hand, and to a very tough, fine, uniform and often indurated clay on the other, as well as the irregular and sudden changes, sharply divided, between these materials composing the ridges, in the cuts made through them by the railroad, would admit of no doubt that this country owes its present surface-configuration primarily to the action of the last glacial period, which covered its surface with an immense ice-sheet. The well-known ice-markings on the huge granite, schist, greenstone and conglomerate boulders found everywhere imbedded and protruding from the surface, add their testimony to the other characteristics mentioned. Most of the cuts made by the railway through the ridges showed in a marked degree the irregular arrangement and the sudden changes of and between the materials mentioned above. On August 4, 1844, J. C. Fremont made the first record found of coal in Wyoming. On the North Fork of the Platte River, beyond Medicine Butte, in Carbon County, he noted: "in the precipitous bluffs were displayed a succession of strata containing fossil, vegetable remains, and several beds of coal. In some of the beds, the coal did not appear to be perfectly mineralized; and in some of the seams, it was compact and remarkably lustrous." A little later he noted, "longitude 111°, latitude 4 1/2°-Muddy R.--coal."1 In 1848, Clayton reported coal on Sulphur Creek near the site of old Bear River City, in Uinta County.2 Maj. Osborne Cross in his journal, on July 1, 1849, records seeing coal on Deer Creek and in one of the hills near Crooked Muddy Creek, in Converse County; on July 7, he records that the country from Deer Creek to the Sweetwater River abounds in coal, probably in Natrona and Carbon Counties.3 A letter from Asst. Quartermaster Van Vliet to General Jessup dated July 25, 1850, asked an appropriation for building shops at Fort Laramie for making repairs for the emigrants, and mentions "coal and timber," but undoubtedly meant charcoal, as no other mention of stone coal is made in the records of the fort.4 Stansbury, in 1852, placed on his map of this section the words: "Great Coal Basin," extending from the west bank of Bear River, near the present Evanston, to Point of Rocks in Sweetwater County. In 1859, a military coal reservation was established near here, but the coal was never worked to any great extent, although probably some was hauled to Fort Bridger for smithing purposes. When the fort was abandoned this reservation returned to the public lands .2 In the same year (1859), Hayden traced the lignite formation uninterruptedly from the upper Missouri Valley to a point on the North Platte River, about 80 miles northwest of Fort Laramie.5 On August 25, 1865,

Peche1bronn.—So far Pechelbronn is the only producing district. Figures are given in Table 2 covering the main features of the field, but these figures call for the following remarks: First, Pechelbronn should not' be considered as a single unit, it appears, but as a succession of small oil fields, each of which is affected by very variable conditions. Consequently, certain figures concerning production per acre, production per acre-foot, pressure conditions and thicknesses of oil sands would be so misleading that they have been omitted here. Second, as regards production methods, attention is drawn especially to the fact that 42 per cent of the oil is extracted by the use of shafts and galleries and the remainder by pumping wells. Exploitation, formerly confined to Oligocene sands, has been extended recently to Jurassic and Triassic oil-bearing formations. Gabian.—This small oil field, discovered in 1924, is almost exhausted. Exploitation to date is restricted to three wells. There were no drilling activities in 1933. Exploration.—During 1933, two exploration holes have been started in France. The first, in the vicinity of Lavelanet (Ariége) on the Dreuille anticline, has reached the depth of 2400 ft,.; the second, in the Autun Permian Basin, is drilling at 1300 feet. Northern Africa Morocco.—Drilling operations have been on a large scale in Morocco. In the Gharb district (Souk el Arba area), the deepest well was abandoned in 1933 at 7014 ft. Small irregular productive horizons were encountered in the Miocene at shallow depth, oil and gas showing in the Eocene, but no commercial oil field has been discovered. In the Djebel Tselfat, near Petitjean, a small production of oil was obtained from a Jurassic horizon. In the meantime deeper formations are being explored and a new structure in the vicinity is being tested. In Eastern Morocco, a well is drilling near Taza. Production in Morocco, about 2400 bbl., has not been listed on Table 2, owing to its origin—exploration wells.

HE orientations of 137 crystals of copper pro-T duced by secondary recrystallization in a cube texture matrix have recently been obtained. Although the crystals were not prepared for the purpose of determining a secondary recrystallization texture, the orientations obtained proved to be rather interesting, as they confirmed, in part, published results and also disclosed additional preferred orientations in the texture. The investigation of Dahl and Pawlek,&apos; Bowles and Boas,&apos; and Kronberg and Wilson3 showed respectively that the orientations of secondary grains growing in a cube texture matrix were related to those of the primary grains by a rotation of approximately 30" about [001], the rolling direction, by 30" about a <111> direction, and by either 22" or 38" about a <111> direction. Kronberg and Wilson also obtained a component of the texture similar to that of Dahl and Pawlek except the angle of rotation about [001] was 19". When the cube texture matrix was deformed a small amount, Kronberg and Wilson also obtained large grains on subsequent annealing corresponding to a rotation of 15" about the normal to the sheet, but these grains should not be classified as secondary recrystallization grains since they were produced subsequent to mechanical straining. The particular texture obtained, of course, depends on the composition of the copper and the processing schedule employed, since these factors markedly affect the primary recrystallization texture and the sharpness of any cube texture produced. In the present investigation, pieces of OFHC copper in the form of M in. round bars were cold forged to a thickness of about 0.40 in., annealed 1 hr at 350°C in an atmosphere of hydrogen, and cold rolled crosswise to a thickness of 0.200 in. These pieces were given a penultimate anneal of 1 hr at 350°C in hydrogen and a 90 pct cold-rolling reduction lengthwise to a thickness of 0.020 in. Indentations generally were put in one end of the as-cold-rolled strips to promote earlier formation of secondary grains.

Measurements of current efficiency at an iron anode during the electrolysis of FeO-CaO-SiO2 melts contained in an iron crucible indicate that compositions of high SiO5 content conduct current almost entirely by ionic mechanisms. Hozueuer, compositions of high metal oxide content give euidence for considerable nonionic conduction that can be attributed to p-type semicon-duction. Measurements of transference numbers in a Hittorf-type cell show that both calcium and iron ions are important contributors to ionic conduction. ELECTROCHEMICAL properties such as conductance, transference numbers. and oxidation or reduction at an electrode have been studied as means of delineating the structure of simple silicate melts that are related to the more complex slags encountered ir steelmaking processes.&apos; Measurement of these properties has strengthened the concept that molten silicates are constituted of metal ions and of silicate networks. Typically, the magnitude of electrical conductivity and the extent of agreement with Faraday&apos;s law have given evidence for ionic structures, and transference numbers have shown cations to be the exclusive carriers of electrical charge. However, melts containing oxides of iron, FeO in particular, have been found to exhibit nonionic conduction of curx,ent. The work by Inouye, Tomlinson, and chipman&apos; demonstrated semiconduction, presumably of the p-type, in molten wüstite. Simnad, Derge, and George3 and Dukelow and Derge,4 in studying the electrolysis of FeO-SiO2 and FeO-MnO-SiO2 melts, concluded that p-type semi-conduction occurs in these systems, although ionic conduction is generally favored by increased percentages of MnO or SIO2. CONSIDERING the hazard involved in mining operations, statistics show, that a very small percentage of accidents is chargeable to electricity. These accidents do represent quite a large percentage of those that are preventable and they are the direct result of the introduction, for purely economical reasons, of a dangerous element. The introduction of electricity in mines should decrease the hazard, and in no case should electricity be applied to the mechanical operation of equipment if by so doing the dangers incidental to mining are increased. The greater number of accidents are the result of persons coming in contact with exposed conductors at potentials varying from 250 to 500 volts direct current. The use of alternating current at higher potentials than these is quite common in large mines, but it is very rare that an accident happens from this source. This is explained by the fact that where these high voltages are warranted, proper precautions are taken, and the installations are directed by those who fully appreciate the dangers incidental to the work. Direct current is in much more general use than alternating current because of its adaptability to haulage locomotives and the low cost of installation in small operations. We are, however, coming to a more extended application of alternating current for the operation of mechanical devices used in connection with mining. Our underground direct-current wiring system is an evolution from the surface trolley and feeder systems. This is probably due to the fact that our earlier successful applications were electric locomotives, which required the use of a trolley wire. The trolley current has been almost banished from industrial establishments on the surface because of the hazard involved, yet we use it indiscriminately underground, where the dangers from accidental contact or fire are infinitely greater. This does not mean that the underground trolley systems should be eliminated, but it does imply the proper safeguarding of such equipment as is necessarily a part of the trolley systems.

ELECTROLYTIC, production of cadmium at the Great Falls plant started in the first part of the year 1925. Prior to that time, an experi¬mental unit had been in operation for a few months during the year . 1922. At present the plant is the largest producer of cadmium, not only in the United States but in the world. Electrolytic cadmium is characterized by its very low content of impurities. The main impurities, which are lead, copper, zinc, and iron, do not aggregate more than 0.05 per cent., leaving a cadmium content better than 99.95 per cent. The consumption of cadmium has increased rapidly since the war, with the growing use in the plating industry. Cadmium plating has come into prominence because of its connection with the automobile and radio industries. As a protective coating, a deposit of, cadmium is superior to zinc. Cadmium is also used extensively in alloys. Important among these is the alloy with copper used in telephone and trolley wire. In proportion of 0.5 to 1.2 per cent., cadmium adds materially to the strength and wearing qualities. Practically all commercial zinc concentrates contain a small amount of cadmium. In the electrolytic zinc process, the cadmium that is dissolved in the regular leaching operation is removed from solution with metallic zinc, generally added in the form of zinc dust. This precipitate also contains the copper taken into solution and the excess of zinc dust, which is required in order to insure a complete removal of all impurities. The precipitate is treated by a separate process to recover the copper, cadmium and excess zinc. In order to make the metals more soluble and to render insoluble such impurities as iron, arsenic and antimony, the precipitate is roasted. The roasting is carried out in gas-fired McDougall furnaces, with a roasting temperature of about 700° C.

SALT bodies in the form of rolls, horses (sometimes called horsebacks), folds, wants and pinches1 have been encountered while driving entries and mining out rooms during the development of the potash mines in New Mexico. Superficially these sporadic salt occurrences appear to be much alike, but closer examination reveals individual characteristics, and after four years of observation it seems possible to divide them into three general groups that may tentatively be called "depositional," "erosional," and "structural." The data collected are not yet sufficient to permit forecasts of their probable location, so that the annoyance of having to mine salt instead of potash could be avoided or lessened. However, the information so far available appears to throw some light on the occurrence of the sylvinite2 bed now being mined, and it is as a progress report that the writer presents the results of his observations. The mines of the United States Potash Co. and the Potash Company of America are about 20 miles northeast of Carlsbad, in Eddy County, N. M. They are on the southwestern flank of the Permian salt basin, which underlies western Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, south-central Nebraska, southeastern Colorado and eastern New Mexico. The cuttings from many oil wells and the cores from the potash tests drilled in this basin indicate that this salt series approached its greatest thick-ness (about 4000 ft.) in the southeastern part of New Mexico and the adjoining portions of Texas, and that the most advanced stages of

A CONSIDERABLE number of experiments in recent years have definitely established the fact that the internal friction or mechanical hysteresis of a metal under cyclic stress is a property that is highly "structure sensitive." Because of this fact, it has been suggested that an observa-tion of this property, which often is referred to as "clamping capacity," might he a useful indicator of structural changes taking place when a metal or alloy is subjected to any of a number of metallurgical treatments. Damping capacity is of interest to both engineer and metallurgist, but from a rather different point of view, and the information that each desires from such observations is of a different nature. The metallurgist is in search of various external indications of changes taking place in the interior of a metal; changes which are in themselves not directly observa-ble. Even if the observed phenomenon cannot be explained in funda-mental terms, it may be empirically related to certain characteristics of the material and prove of real value in research. Internal friction or mechanical hysteresis occupies such a position, and, although it is not well understood in terms of basic metallic theory, an observation of its changes can serve in a very useful capacity. Of course, there is nothing new in the measurement of damping, but the use of this property in metallurgical research constitutes a vast field, which has received all too little attention. The present work is essentially of an exploratory nature in this field and is an attempt to evaluate the process as a research tool. The phenomenon of age-hardening was chosen as a typical example of a structural change and one method of measuring damping was examined in considerable detail.

The fusion-point of clay has usually been considered to be influenced chiefly by the quantity of fluxing impurities which the clay contained. Those clays which contain a high percentage of fluxes, such as ferric oxide, lirne, magnesia, and alkalies, fuse at a low temperature. Aside from the percentage of fluxing-impurities, the size of the grains exerts an important influence. Yet, while this fact has, no doubt, been recognized by many, practically no attempts have been made to prove it by actual experiment, although in the case of fire-clays, Prof. H. O. Hofman has rather disputed it. To illustrate the point more clearly, suppose a clay to be made up of a mixture of very refractory grains, such as kaolinite, and some fusible ones. If this clay be heated, the more easily fusible grains will melt first on the surface, and the softening under heat will gradually extend from the surface of the grain to its center. The larger, therefore, the size of the grain, the longer the time required for the heat to penetrate it. Now, if two samples of clay contain the same volume of flux, but of unequal size, the one containing the smaller-sized grains should fuse first, because the fluxing materials are more evenly and thoroughly distributed through the clay, so that they will more or less surround the refractory grains, which tend to act as a framework and hold up the clay-mass when heated. In order to demonstrate the effect of fineness of grain on the fusibility of clay, several mixtures were made up, consisting of white clay and other minerals. The white clay used was a very refractory type from Georgia, the fusion-point of which lay about cone 35 of the Seger series. The mixtures were formed into small bars 1* inches long, and set on a narrow surface, so that the ends were free to bend as soon as the mass softened. They were burned in a Seger gas-furnace.

Introduction In 1956, the first mobile crusher was installed in a limestone quarry in Hover, Germany. These early mobile crushers solved the problem of wet and soft ground conditions that did not permit the use of haulage trucks due to the high cost of building and maintaining the haulage roads. Quarry operators also wanted to take advantage of continuous belt conveyor haulage systems and the resulting cost savings. European mines, particularly the coalfields, are in soft materials that allow use of bucket wheel excavators and their following continuous haulage system of belt conveyors. Quarry operators, with this background knowledge of belt conveyors in mining, easily accepted the conveyor concept, once in-pit mobile crushing solved the problem of size reduction of mine-run-rock required for conveyor application. Four years after the initial mobile crusher installation, the first report published on the subject appeared in the December 1960 issue of Mining Engineer (Kochanowsky, 1960). With this early background and basis for direction, mobile in-pit crushing and conveying have increased to more than 74 installations. The capacity, type of crusher, and material being processed appear in Table 1. These data in Table 1 indicate that experience to data has been heavily influenced by limestone installations of less than 1 kt/h (1102 stph). Most of these installations were directly fed by a mine face excavator because of the limestone quarry ground conditions. Crusher Configurations Crushers systems developed to date have varying mobility capabilities. These range from fully mobile units that are used continuously in this mode to fixed, permanently located in-pit crushers. The following terms are presented to help distinguish the range of mobility within the configurations of "mobile" crusher systems planned or now in use. Mobile Crusher The crusher works at the mine face, is directly fed by an excavator, and moves in unison with the excavator on its own transport mechanism as the mining progresses. An example is the unit delivered in 1976 to Yamama Cement Co. in Reyadh, Saudi Arabia.

THE aluminum oxide known as corundum has several varieties that have been used as gem materials since ancient times. These include the red variety called ruby, the blue variety sapphire, and the asteriated types of ruby and sapphire. Asteriated sapphire was known to the ancients under the name of astrios, and descriptions of this gem were given by Pliny and other early writers. The relation of these gem materials to each other as varieties of a single species, corundum, was first clearly established by Haüy in 1805 and J. M. Güthe&apos; in 1809. Natural gem corundum is obtained principally in Ceylon, Siam, Burma, India, and Australia. Star sapphires and rubies always have been highly prized and in recent years have become particu- larly popular in the United States. Natural star rubies of large size and fine quality are extremely rare and rank with large and fine emeralds and diamonds as the most valuable of gem stones. Interest thus attaches to the recent success in commercially synthesizing star sapphires and rubies of a size and perfection unmatched by nature. Corundum was first synthesized as crystals in 1837 by A. Gaudin, who fused alum and aluminum oxide with potassium sulphate. Numerous other syntheses have been reported in more recent years. Summaries of this work are given in Doelter&apos;s Hand-buch der Mineralchemie, Mellor&apos;s Compreheizsive Treatise of Inorganic Chemistry, and other reference works. The methods employed include the reaction in the gaseous state at high temperatures of halogen compounds of aluminum with water vapor or boric oxide; the crystallization of aluminum oxide from fusion in potassium molybdate, potassium dichrom-ate or borax; and crystallization from highly aluminous silicate melts. A. SILVERMAN,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-Prof. Richards has described a very interesting process. In addition to the method described, electroplating and a number of other processes have been used. In one, the two metals were heated and united under hydraulic pressure; in a second, the steel was coated with an alloy, brass for example, and the molten copper cast around this. The process that I would like to bring to the attention of the metallurgists present consists simply of pouring molten copper, brass, or cupronickel around a clean red-hot steel billet. &apos;It is covered by the Roth patents. The 8-in. cylindrical billet containing about 70 per cent. steel (core) and 30 per cent. copper is hot drawn or rolled until several inches in diameter and afterward cold drawn or rolled to rod, wire of any desired diameter, or sheet. The wire is used for electrical conduits where conductivity and high tensile strength are required, also for the manufacture of cables and screen cloth. The sheet is employed for the manufacture of spouting, molding, shells, etc. The last application is particularly interesting. In testing rifle cartridges, which usually contain lead-filled copper noses, pine boards 1 in. thick, covered with ¼ -in. rawhide, are placed 1 ft. apart. The value of the cartridge depends on the number of boards penetrated by .the bullet. In government tests made with copper-coated steel noses (15 per cent. copper on either side of the steel) the penetrating power was found to be approximately double that of pure copper noses. The advantage of copper-coated steel over cupronickel lies in the fact that the- former does not require any special heat treatment during the punching. Rifle cartridges were prepared from copper-coated steel in a number of government arsenals. The value of the combination was attested by the awarding of a contract for the construction of a $3,300,000 plant. Unfortunately, the contract was signed on the day preceding the signing of. the armistice and was cancelled several days later. Tests were conducted for about 1 yr. before the contract was awarded to determine the value of this combination of metals. Since the war a number of cartridge and shell manufacturers have signified their intention of using copper-coated steel.

The western coal industry, long overshadowed by the petroleum and metallic minerals industries, has been revitalized by several new coal mining operations, with the promise that this is only the beginning of a tremendous surge in production of coal that will carry into the next century. The content of this paper is confined to the coal fields and recent developments in eastern Montana, northeastern Wyoming and western North Dakota. The area is commonly referred to as the Powder River-Fort Union region although the Powder River Basin and the Fort Union formation are separate entities and are not coextensive. Coincidentally or otherwise, the extent of the subbituminous part of the coal region coincides approximately with the Powder River Basin. Environmental considerations together with the low sulfur content of much of the western coal have triggered demand since this coal could not compete at present with eastern and midwestern coal solely on a delivered-cost-per-million-btu basis. However, increasing costs of underground mining and the comparatively thin seams of the eastern and midwestern deposits may soon bring a balance to these costs regardless of the sulfur content. Another factor which has made western coal competitive at this time is the use of the unit-trains to significantly reduce the cost of transportation. Fast loading and unloading facilities and trains of 100 cars or more in turn-around service are the keys to success in this effort.

The focus of attention during 1939 was on increasing the octane number of gasoline. The "octane race" resumed full swing. The averagc octane number of house-brand gasoline by the end of the year had easily reached two numbers higher, with several companies in the field actually purveying house-brand gasoline of 78-80 "research" octane number, equivalent roughly to from 74 to 77 A.S.T.M. octane rating, compared with the 70 A.S.T.M. ceiling of two or more years ago. Whether this trend toward much higher octanes is the result or the cause of the many t,echnical developments in the motor-fuel field of recent, years, progress has really been startling. In addition to the advance in catalytic cracking and catalytic re-forming, other important contributions to the technical ability to produce higher octane values include: installat>ions involving increased capacity in thermal re-forming, with improved economic status both as to yields and octane number, by coupling with catalytic polymerization; more widespread adoption of catalytic and thermal polymerization, and a surge toward extensive installations of newly developed alkylation processes for making iso-octane, neo-hexanr and other high antiknock products; and greater use of improved desul-phurization processes, and application of superfractionation methods for segregation of practically pure hydrocarbons with superior octanr qualities from gas and highly volatilc liquids. The approaching of practical limits in the use. of tetracthyl lead (t,hr well-known "law of diminishing returnsn coming into the picture at the higher octane levels being approached) has given impetus to development of the methods listed above. In particular, processes that improve the octane rating and also increase ethyl lcad sc.nsitivity have had considerable study durirlg the year. UNEMPLOYMENT no longer finds its cure in pros-perity. Not only is there surplus labor in over-developed industries -like coal -mining, but more and more man, power is being released by technical im-provements in production. A new problem in industry has arisen: What is to be done with the labor dis-pensed with by better methods and more highly de-veloped equipment? Are luxury industries the logical outlet for our new unemployed? There has been a marked decline in employment in the manufacturing industries during 1927. Its extent is shown by the Bureau of Labor Statistics index, which receded from a high of 91.4 in March to 87.3 in October, with an estimated figure of approximately 85 in De-cember. This was a drop between the high and low points in the year of about 7 per cent, which means roughly that at the close of 1927 there were approxi-mately 600,000 fewer persons employed in manufac-turing industries than in March -of 1927, and upward of 400,000 less than in December, 1926. Does this de-cline reflect a swing toward industrial depression? Paradoxically it does not; the cause of unemployment at this time does not lie in a lack of prosperity, but rather is largely traceable to prosperity. Capital has been abundant and has gone back into production in the form of great increases in mechanization and new processing. Management is more than ever on the alert to improve methods, as well as to cut costs through reduction of personnel. Properly applied incentives and employee cooperation also have increased produc-tion per man. A new phenomenon in the industrial world-technological unemployment-is the result. Of course, there are added to those unemployed be-cause of the reasons just considered those affected by the coal strike, the period of shutdown at the Ford plants, and the reduction in expenditures by railroads and public utilities. This whole situation suggests that the problem of unemployment is not entirely solved by ironing out seasonal variations or by achieving business prosperity.

Determination of the solid solubility of gases in metals is usually done by one of two methods. The first is an additive method, in which measurement is made at temperature of the maximum amount of gas absorbed by an initially degassed piece of the metal. Gas additions are made until the dissolved gas first comes into equilibrium with a compound. This method is most useful at relatively high temperatures where the amount of gas absorbed is relatively large and where equilibration of the dissolved gas with the gas atmosphere can be achieved in a relatively short time. The second is a precipitation method. A supersaturated solution of the gas in the metal is held at temperature until equilibrium is established between the gas atoms in solution and a compound. The quantity of dissolved gas is then determined by some physical measurement which is sensitive only to the gas in solution. This method is generally useful in low temperatures. This paper describes measurement of solubility of nitrogen in tantalum whereby measurements at low temperatures using internal-friction methods are plotted together with existing measurements at high temperatures. The solubility is thereby known from less than 0.5 at. pet at 350°C to near 13 pet at 2300°C. Several measurements have been reported of the solubility of nitrogen in tantalum. These are collected in Fig. 1. Three single determinations by Ke,1 Andrews,2 and Brauer and zapp3 are plotted along with a series of measurements by Vaughn, Stewart and schwartz4 and Gebhardt, Seghezzi, and Fromm.5 Although not much doubt exists about the solubility being in excess of 10 at. pet above 2000°C, the solubility indicated at low temperatures depends on whose data are selected as being most reliable. The variation is enormous, being at least an order of magnitude at 500°C. Accordingly, a measurement was begun to examine this discrepancy.
