Strategic because suitable substitutes for many of its alloys have never been developed. Strategic because of certain uses and potential uses of a classified nature in our nuclear energy program. In this field, substitutes have been developed, but only at the expense of a reduction in efficiency.

The figures on enrollment in the engineering schools of the United States and Canada indicate that the total number of students in these schools for the current year, 1949-50, is about 10% less than it was a year ago. This year, 226,533 undergraduates and graduate students are studying engineering in the United States and Canada as compared with 249,913 students last year. This investigation considers the penetration of a crack through an interfacial boundary separating two materials. The interface is assumed to be an imperfect bond characterized by frictional resistance and the cracks are assumed to be pressurized. The formulation is achieved through the use of complex variable methods together with the application of dislocation solutions. The Northern West Virginia Region of Consolidation Coal Company consists of ten underground mines. The Pittsburgh seam of coal is being mined. This seam is approximately seven feet in thickness in our area. The mining equipment consists of twelve longwall systems and a combination of Joy and Jeffrey ripper type miners. There are a few boring type machines still in use, but these are rapidly being phased out. The auxiliary ventilation fans being utilized vary in type from single stage carriage mounted 20 horse-power Joys to 40 and 50 horsepower two-stage Joys, Buffalo Forge, and Peabody brands. The particular fans that we have primarily been working with on noise reduction are the two-stage 40 and 50 horsepower types.

The writer's experience at Falconbridge has led him to the belief that only through detailed work, and by careful correlation of both geological and geophysical results, can geophysical prospecting methods be applied successfully to mining exploration problems.
