ANYONE who has been confronted with the problem of predicting the performance of a sand-pump installation is vitally aware of the dearth of precise information that has been published on this important subject. Such data as have been collected are not readily available in a concise and readily usable form, so that many operators would find it a considerable chore to find the pertinent information required to undertake a detailed study. The purpose of this paper is to assemble such established data, correlate them with field experience and outline the factors that must be appraised in the determination of a satisfactory pump installation. The transportation of solids in solution is of vital interest to every mill superintendent and operator, and many of the factors that are involved in this hydraulic problem vary widely from installation to installation, and in some cases even from time to time on any one installation.. These include: type of solids (including shape of particles), size of solids (grind), percentages of fines (slimes), dilution of pulp, contour of pipe line, type of pipe, age of pipe line, effect that diameter of pipe has on characteristic flow conditions, and other factors. Some of these have been fairly well determined by experimental work but many still must be established through interpolating or extrapolating between values that have been derived from known field conditions. Most problems primarily concern the transportation of a definite weight of dry solids from one specific location to another. The type of material, shape of particles, grind and percentages of fines are established and very often the dilution at which the solids must be handled as well. The problem then evolves into a determination of the size, type and contour of the pipe line and the net effective head against which the pump must operate. Before discussing the determination of the head, it might be well to review the interrelationship between the pump discharge (capacity), the head developed by the pump and the pump speed, which will apply to any centrifugal pump installation. EFFECT OF PUMP SPEED Basically, the head developed by a centrifugal pump varies as the square of the pump speed and the discharge as the first power of the speed. However, even at constant speed a centrifugal pump will operate over a wide range of capacities, depending upon the head that must be developed to deliver the liquid or pulp to the end of the pipe line. This is shown graphically in Fig. I. If the pump in question is being driven at a constant speed of 900 r.p.m. it will deliver 500 U. S. gal. per min. against a head of 56 ft., 800 U. S. gal. per min. against a head of 50 ft., and so on. In other words, at this speed the capacity of the pump will be determined and limited by

Before direct or wet smelting of copper concentrate was adopted at the McGill smelter, in November 1932, actual furnace smelting tests had indicated the possibility of smelting between 400 and 500 dry tons of wet concentrate per furnace day. Under calcine smelting practice, solid charge up to 116; tons per furnace day had been smelted. It was realized that in order to smelt wet tonnage in equivalent amount per furnace day, a higher combustion rate and higher temperatures would be necessary within the furnace. The reverberatory furnace considered in the following history of wet-smelting developments is a unit rz7 ft. long and 28 ft. 8 in. wide, inside dimensions (Fig. I). This furnace was in operation through all the years from 1934 to date. During 1933, the first complete year of direct or wet smelting, the plant was on a curtailed copper-production basis and the available concentrate tonnage to be smelted was limited. The average coal-firing rate in the reverberatory for that year was 124 tons per furnace day. This rate was lower than the average for years immediately preceding under calcine smelting practice. With this coal-firing rate, an average of 391 tons of new metal-bearing material (N.M.B.M.) was smelted per furnace day. The following year, 1934, the coal-firing rate was increased to 139 tons and the smelting rate increased to 448 tons N.M.B.M. per fur- nace day. In succeeding years production required that either more tonnage be smelted in the one furnace or an additional furnace be placed in operation. With this situation confronting the smelting department, it was determined to continue the program of increasing the coal-firing rate and also to intensify the temperature in the smelting zone of the furnace. In order to accoinplish this, various improvements were made to aid combustion within the furnace. The burners were enlarged, increased primary air was supplied to the burners, and changes were made in the furnace to enlarge and streamline the outlet, thus increasing the furnace draft. The coal-firing rate was increased yearly until 1937 when the firing rate averaged 210 tons per furnace day. Thereafter the firing rate fluctuated according to character of charge and production requirements. In general, however, with the same character of charge the smelting rate increased in almost direct proportion to the increases in firing rate. Table I shows the average coal-firing rate, smelting rate, and other pertinent data for the direct-smelting years of 1933 to 1939 inclusive, the first fivc months of 1940 and May 1940. These figures show that the water evaporated in the waste-heat boilers was in almost direct proportion to the coal-firing rate. In making comparisons in the table, it should be borne in mind that the figures, except for May 1940, are yearly averages. A basic problem in connection with manganese is to find economical ways to utilize domestic resources. As a part of its program to conserve domestic mineral resources and to reduce dependence of foreign sources, the Bureau of Mines had conducted extensive research to broaden manganese technology and to find economical, technically-feasible processes for recovering manganese from these low-grade resources. This paper analyzes some of the major difficulties which have been encountered in previously proposed processes for treating low-grade manganese ores and discusses a process which may circumvent many of these difficulties. Vast deposits of low-grade manganese ore exist in the U.S., yet domestic production is insignificant compared to the more than 2 million tons of ore imported yearly into this country.' A basic problem in connection with manganese is to find economical ways to utilize domestic resources.2 As a part of its program to conserve domestic mineral resources and to reduce dependence on foreign sources, the Bureau of Mines has conducted extensive research to broaden manganese technology and to find economical, technically feasible processes for recovering manganese from these low-grade resources. Although a great many processes have been proposed for treating domestic manganese resources, a failing of many of them is that too many steps are involved for economical operation.' Some of the major processes that have been proposed were reviewed by Norman and Kirby.3,4 Chlorination processes have become increasingly useful as a means of recovering valuable metals from raw materials, because the relative cost of chlorine (Cl2) and hydrogen chloride (HC1) has decreased through the years, and because the corrosion resistance of materials of construction has been improved. The objective of these processes is to form metal chlorides that are more volatile or water-soluble than are the corresponding oxides or sulfides; these compounds then can be separated from the gangue or other minerals by volatilization or leaching. Several chlorination processes for the recovery of manganese have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines5-8 and others; the major chlorination processes were reviewed in 1963, and their main features were compared.4 In all these processes, the simultaneous leaching or volatilization of iron chlorides with manganese chloride (MnCl2) is a problem, and the more iron that is present, generally the greater the problem. The leaching step is not highly selective, and the product of this step is, at best, suitable only for the production of ferromanganese or for further processing to remove iron. The product of the volatilization step is, in all cases, a mixture of iron and manganese chlorides that contains too much iron even for ferromanganese production, and must undergo additional processing steps for iron removal. THERMODYNAMIC CONSIDERATIONS The literature indicates that the desired chlorination reactions will proceed at practical rates at temperatures near 1200°K (927°C). Free energy changes at 1200°K for the critical steps of the reduction and chlorination reactions9-11 follow: Most of the research on chlorination processes for manganese recovery has been done with HC1 rather than with C12, for the following three main reasons: 1) Recycling of the chlorinating agent, which is economically vital, appeared to be easier for HC1

Since the first atomic bomb exploded over Japan, a great deal of speculation has been published about the use of atomic energy instead of coal for the production of power. Atomic energy, in time, may displace coal for this purpose, but atomic energy will not displace coal in supplying chemical raw materials to the rapidly expanding carbon-chemicals market. Modern civilization demands large quantities of carbon compounds and the logical source of many of these is coal. Consequently, many progressive operators are considering the possibilities of the utilization of coal as a chemical raw material as never before. Furthermore, the demand for clean, smokeless, and ashless fuels will continue to increase and the only way to handle coal under those conditions is to take it apart, just as crude petroleum is taken apart. One can readily imagine where the petroleum industry would be now if it had insisted on selling customers only crude oil, perhaps emulsified with a little salt water to correspond to the moisture and mineral matter in raw coal. The time seems to be coming at an accelerated Dace when mine operators will find that competing for a highly selective fuel market by producing a larger tonnage at smaller cost will be less profitable than to increase the value of a smaller tonnage many fold by producing something more valuable to industry and civilization than raw coal. For example, about 750,000 tons of carbon black selling for $50 to $60 per ton was produced in the United States in 1945. This tonnage is insignificant compared with the total production of coal in the United States, but a very tidy tonnage, together with the coal necessary to operate the process, for any mine operator fortunate enough to obtain a method of producing a better carbon black from coal. From the point of view of tonnage, the manufacture of coke of various kinds and its by-products is at present the most important source of carbon chemicals from coal. Nearly 20 per cent of the coal mined in this country is used for this purpose. A large proportion of the coke is used for the production of iron and steel, but even in this operation a considerable part of the coke is used for a chemical purpose; that is, the reduction of the ore to metallic iron. In addition, large quantities of coke are used in manufacturing many important products that find their way into the market. Possibilities of Acetylene One of the important chemicals manufactured from coke is calcium carbide, from which many products are made. One of these is acetylene. This hydrocarbon can also be manufactured from natural gas or from waste oil-refinery gas and these industries will probably offer competition for the manufacture of acetylene. On the basis of metallographic analysis, incipient melting data, thermal analysis work, and X-ray diffraction, phase relationships in the 0 to 50 atomic pct alloy content were carefully resolved. Phase relationships in the higher alloy content regions were outlined. A single intermediate phase, peritectically formed, of the form ZrX2 was established in each system. A eutectic and a eutectoid were found in the zirconium-rich region of both systems. Appreciable solubility of molybdenum and wolfram was found in ß zirconium, but only a slight solubility in a zirconium. PREVIOUS work on these systems was limited to X-ray investigations of the intermediate phases1, 2 and preliminary surveys of the zirconium-rich alloys." The diagrams presented were determined principally by metallographic, thermal analysis, and incipient melting techniques. In accordance with the Atomic Energy Commission contract requirements, phase relationships up to 50 atomic pct molybdenum or wolfram were carefully resolved, while only a limited amount of work was done to outline the 50 to 100 atomic pct alloy region. A description and analysis of the metals used in the preparation of alloys for this study are included in Table I. A "low-hafnium" zirconium crystal bar, produced by the decomposition of a volatile iodide onto a hot filament, was employed for these studies. Westinghouse "Grade 3" crystal bar was used for all alloys. The zirconium, as received, was coated with corrosion product from a standard autoclave test by which its grade designation is determined. This was removed by a sand-blasting and HF-HNO, pickling technique developed by the Atomic Energy Commission. The bars were cold rolled to approximately 1/32 in. sheet, pickled for iron removal, sheared to 1/4 in. squares, washed with acetone, and stored for furnace charge. Molybdenum sheet. 0.003 in. thick, 0.001 to 0.005 in. wolfram wire, and M in. wolfram rod crushed to granular form, from Fansteel Metallurgical Corp., were used as alloying stock. Melting Procedure A nonconsumable electrode arc furnace identical to that described in detail by Hansen et al.4 was used. The source of power for melting Zr-Mo alloys was a 400 amp dc welding generator, while a 900 amp dc generator was used for preparing Zr-W alloys. Electrode tips of the same material as the alloy addition were employed in both systems, i.e., molybdenum tips were used for Zr-Mo alloys, and wolfram tips for Zr-W alloys. This precluded any possible electrode contamination during arc melting. Ingots of 20 to 30 g of Zr-Mo alloys were melted under high purity helium in the cavity of a copper block insert in a spun copper crucible. Homogeneity was insured by remelting all ingots four to six times without opening the furnace. Due to the large difference between the melting points of wolfram and zirconium, direct melting of the charged metals as above generally yielded ingots containing unmelted wolfram particles. This was overcome, after many variations in technique, by melting a pure wolfram charge at high power levels (700 to 900 amp) and slowly adding zirconium to form a master alloy. Such master alloys were sectioned and remelted several times, then crushed to serve as melting stock for alloys of lower wolfram content. Master alloys containing 26, 50, 52, 70, and

The Institute conducts jointly with the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers, certain activities as listed below, and is joint owner with them of certain properties. United Engineering Trustees, Inc.* When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society but the name has now been changed to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which own equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. The interest of each of the Founders societies, aside from especial trust funds, is now valued at $493,352. The A. I. M. E. trustees are Arthur S. Dwight, J. V. N. Dorr and H. A. Guess. George D. Barron will succeed Mr. Guess as trustee at the end of this year. The President of the Board is Francis Lee Stuart and the Secretary, Alfred D. Flinn. The Engineering Foundation The Engnieering Foundation was established in 1814 as a result of a gift of $200,000 made by Ambrose Swasey. It is intended not only "for the Furtherance of research" along broad lines but also "for the advancement of" a wide variety of other activities of benefit to engineering as need arises. The endowment fund, which now amounts to $630,000, is administered by the United Engineering Trustees, Inc. Through The Engineering Foundation board, on which the Institute is now represented by J. V. N. Dorr, John M. Callow and Galen H. Clevenger, the income of the endowment, approximately $28,000 a year, and funds contributed for special projects are appropriated for the purposes intended. H. C. Bellinger will succeed Mr. Callow on the board at the end of this year. Alfred D. Flinn is Secretary- and Director. Researches of wide interest in many lines have been aided by Engineering Foundation. . A grant from it to the Mining Methods Committee assisted in the preparation of Volume 72 of the Transactions. For several years the Foundation has aided in support of the study of Blast-furnacc Slags by R. 8. McCaffery at the University of Wisconsin, sponsored by the Institute. The Foundation has raised over $230,000 to support the Alloys of Iron Research endorsed by the Institute and George B. Water-house is serving as Chairman and Director of the Iron Alloys Committee which has been brought together to direct this work. The Foundation has also on recommendation of the Institute made a grant in aid of the studies of Mining and Strata being conducted at Columbia University by P. B. Bucky, which promise information of great usefulness relative to mine subsidence and support of ground. John Fritz Medal Board of Award The medal was established in 1902 and lias since, been awarded not oftener than annually by a hoard of sixteen members, four representatives each from the American Societies of Civil, Mining and Metallurgical, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers.

The oil and gas fields of Michigan that have been under development since 1925 are in an area that extends across the middle of the lower peninsula from northeast to southwest, a distance of about 200 miles, and with a width of about 80 miles. In 19 years 70 fields have been discovered. Most of these are relatively small when compared with other oil-producing areas. This is borne out by the fact that since the first wells were drilled these fields have produced a total of only 204,000,000 bbl. However, Michigan is still maintaining its production, for during the past five years the annual production has remained fairly constant at approximately 20,000,000 bbl. Production for 1943, as reported by the Bureau of Mines, was 20,682,000 barrels. Roughly, one third oi Michigan's production in 1943 came from the Reed City field, which was discovered in 1941. During the year, 237 oil wells were completed in Michigan in 1943. The decrease of 56 from the 1942 total is probably due to the continuance of Government regulations requiring a 40-acre spacing pattern over most of the state. Fig. I shows the principal oil and gas fields of Michigan, and the columnar section, Fig. 2, shows the principal producing horizons in relation to the section drilled. The data of Table I and Table 2 have been carefully checked with previous reports to eliminate errors. Six new producing areas were discovered during 1943 and five areas discovered in 1942 were developed during the year. Both the new discoveries and the 1942 discoveries that were developed appear to be small and relatively unimportant. Goodwell Field.—The best discovery of the year is the Goodwell field, T. 14 N., R. 11 W., Goodwell township, Newaygo County. This small structure was located by core testing done by The Pure Oil Co. in 1942 and early 1943. The first producing well, C. R. Harris No. I, was completed on July 5, 1943, ill the Traverse limestone at a total depth of 2742 ft., with ail estimated potential of 1100 bbl. per day. By the end of the year, 18 wells had been completed in this field and approximately 281,000 bbl. of oil produced. The field operated under proration of 262 bbl. per day per well from Oct. I to Dec. I; 150 bbl. per day per well after that date. Woodville Field.—The small Woodville pool, T. 15 N., R. 11 W., 3 miles north of the Goodwell field, was discovered by core testing by the Ohio Oil Co. The discovery well was completed on May 5, 1943, flowing 650 bbl. of fluid, including 18 per cent salt water the first 18 hr., from the Traverse limestone at a depth of 2810 to 2815 ft. Seven wells had been completed by the end of the year and 67,000 bbl. of oil had been produced. Development is now practically at a standstill because further drilling does not aDDear economically iustified.

THE present program of increased production of armament and lend-lease material for mechanized war has created a problem for the shops that must do the machining. They have naturally turned to the steel producers to provide them with a steel that can be accurately machined with the greatest possible speed. The adding of sulphur to steel as an aid to machinability has long been practiced; however, it may cause red shortness in rolling and may result in billets with seams and cracks, which must be removed before rolling can be continued. This conditioning of billets slows down production and' adds to the cost of making steel. Experience with various grades of sulphur steel made to different specifications has shown that Bessemer sulphur steels roll better than similar grades made in the open hearth, and also that low-carbon steels that are open or semikilled .as tapped roll better than completely deoxidized or killed steels. This has led to the belief that oxygen plays an important part in the rolling qualities of sulphur-bearing steels. It is generally held that the red shortness of sulphur steels is due to the low melting point of the sulphide compounds that separate out at the grain boundaries when the steel solidifies. At the rolling temperature of steel these sulphide compounds melt and cause cracking. ADDING SULPHUR AS A SULPHITE These difficulties can be avoided if sulphur is introduced into the steel by means of an anhydrous sulphite, such as sodium sulphite or sodium bisulphite, which-upon decomposition-forms sulphur dioxide. It is assumed that, in this case, the oxygen of the sulphur dioxide forms part of the sulphide inclusions in the steel, and raises their solidification temperature enough so that the formation in the steel of a low-melting eutectic is prevented. The result is the prevention of hot shortness and a more uniform distribution of inclusions. Fig. I shows photomicrographs of steels made with sulphur, while Fig. 2 illustrates the structure of steels made with sodium . bisulphite. These samples were cut from the steels as cast-that is, before rollingand were polished and lightly etched to bring out the grain boundaries. Fig. I shows that sulphide -inclusions segregate more or less at the grain boundaries, and it can be seen how the continuity of these low-melting inclusions would cause red shortness. Fig. z shows that the sulphide inclusions are more or less uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. This arrangement of inclusions has no apparent effect on the rolling qualities of a steel. This statement has been substantiated by the observation of the rolling of over 6000 tons of steel made with a sulphite addition. The North Texas district, as herein defined, includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Kiiox, Montague, Wichita, Wil-barger, and Young. Jack and Young Counties are included for the first time so that this district will correspond with District No. 9 of the Texas Railroad Commission. This area covers generally the crest and south flank of a system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift. The oil and gas accumulations along this feature are in traps, which, although localized by structures incident to the regional uplift, usually are modified by stratigraphic changes in the sediments. The structural deformation caused by the Red River uplift is modified by the Rend arch, which is a broad anticline plunging northward from the Llano uplift in central Texas through Young and into Archer Counties. The fields in southern Archer, southeastern Baylor, southwestern Clay, and western Jack Counties arc on the extreme north end and along the flanks of the Bend arch and have generally the same type of oil and gas accumulation as the other fields in this district. Recent exploration has been along the flanks of the Fort Worth syncline, which is east of the Bend arch and south of the Red River uplift and extends into southeastern Clay and southwestern Montague Counties and along the eastern part of Jack County. The larger part of past oil and gas produc- tion has come from Pennsylvanian strata, with less important amounts lrom the Permian, and minor quantities from the Mississippian and Ordovician. Developments during 1943 About 1100 wells were drilled in the district during 1943 and more than 500 oil wells were completed, an increase from 1942. of approximately 12 per cent in the number of successful drilling operations of the total wells drilled. The addition of Jack and Young Counties to this district accounts for part of this increase, almost 150 wells being completed in the two counties. Production increased slightly over the previous year as a result of an increase in the number of producing wells and a greater demand for this high-gravity, sweet crude oil. The average depth of discovery wells was about 400 ft. deeper than in 1942. Although more discoveries produced from horizons below the base of the Strawn series than from those above the Straw, the deeper horizons, including the Bend series of the Pennsylvanian, the Mississippian limestone and Ellenburger of the Ordo-vician, largely were dissappointing from the viewpoint of major additions to oil reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was in the basal Strawn sand in the Walnut Bend field, Cooke County. During the year, 31 wells were completed, both in the field and as cxtensions. The most active arca Was Jack County, in which five fields or potential fields were discovered, although only 44 oil wells were completed.

The year 1939 in Kansas, with a production of 57,944,300 bbl. from 19,669 wells, shows a slight recession from the peak of oil production reached the previous year, when slightly over 59,000,000 bbl. of oil was marketed. The previous peak had been reached in 1917 with 45,451,000 bbl. marketed. Another still earlier peak had been reached in 1904, when slightly less than 5,000,000 bbl. was produced and sold. The production of gas probably reached a new peak during 1939 with a total of over 69 billion cubic feet. Between the peak of the year 1908, when over 80 billion cu. ft. was produced, and that of 1939 the production dropped to 16 billion cu. ft., in the year 1921. During the year 1458 wells were drilled. This figure is somewhat lower than that given in several trade journals, because it does not include wells that were deepened or recompleted in a different geological horizon. Nearly 75 per cent (1029) of the total number of wells were completed as commercial oil wells (824 in western and 205 in eastern Kansas). The commercial gas wells completed number 71, of which 24 are in eastern Kansas and 47 in western Kansas. The remaining completions include 154 dry holes in eastern and 204 dry holes in western Kansas. Based on daily potential capacity the new discoveries of the year accounted for a cumulative initial production of 264,000 bbl. in eastern and 1,158,827 bbl. in western Kansas. It is interesting in this connection to note that the number of wells completed in the state rose gradually to a first peak in 1904, when 2782 were drilled. The number dropped off rapidly to 368 three years later, but rose to the second and highest peak in 1918, when 4671 wells were completed. In the period between 1904 and 1912 more gas wells than oil wells were completed. Between the high peak of 1918 and the somewhat lower peak of 1937, the low point was reached during 1931 with the completion of only 470 wells. In the matter of new pools discovered, Kansas again ranks high. The exact number depends somewhat upon the interpretation of a "new" area—whether it should be called a new pool or a long extension of an older pool. In some places this determination cannot be made until more wells are drilled within the area. Therefore, the figures given

IN a recent study1 of the deformation of metastable beta copper-zinc and beta copper-tin crystals, it was established that the parallel markings that appear on the surface of these crystals after slight deformation represent lattice transformations. Stereographic analysis showed that in beta copper-tin, the poles of these markings deviated one or two degrees from poles of the form 1133). In beta copper-zinc the plane delineated by the markings corresponded to no one crystallographic plane of the matrix lattice; the marking poles deviated from 5° to 11° from poles of the form {110}, and were displaced only a few degrees from (110) zones. Inasmuch as the new transition lattices produced as the result of the deformation are different for each alloy, it was thought at first that the habits of the markings might be the result of a cooperation between matrix lattice and transformed lattice. (Both matrix lattices are body-centered cubic.) Such a cooperative effect is thought to obtain in the formation of Widmanstätten figures, for it is well known that the matrix lattice alone does not determine the habit assumed by a segregate phase. On the other hand, it is not inconceivable that the dissimilarity in marking habit might be due to differences in deformation characteristics of beta brass and beta bronze. Barrett and co-workers2 have shown that slip-line habits in pure iron are markedly different from those in high-silicon ferrite; and although it has been repeatedly demonstrated that plates of a segregate phase do not necessarily form on the slip planes of the matrix lattice, deformation characteristics may be more intimately allied with plate formation when a transformation is made to occur as a result of plastic deformation. However, there is the fact that the orientation of markings in metastable beta copper-zinc is the same whether the markings be produced by quenching, deformation, or liquid-air cooling; likewise, quenching and deformation markings in metastable beta copper-tin are oriented in the same way with respect to the beta matrix. Twice in the past two years and in two widely separated localities—ane near Williamsville, Mo., and the other in the Allard Lake district of Quebec— the Contract Drilling Division of the Longyear Company has experienced perplexing difficulties in drilling granitoid igneous rocks. The rocks in both places are characterized by appreciable amounts of feldspar intimately inter-grown with quartz particles of microscopic dimensions. The disappointingly slow rate of advance and the exceptionally high bortz loss, obtaining during the life of these two projects, are ascribed largely to the resistance to abrasion of these two minerals when arranged in this intergrown pattern. Whether all intergrowth-bearing igneous rocks would offer extraordinary resistance to bit progress cannot be stated with assurance on the strength of these experiences alone. More data on diamond drilling this sort of material in a number of localities are needed before any generalizations can be made safely. It should be pointed out that the lack of time and funds made it impossible for the writer, or other persons interested in correlating the details of bit histories with the kinds of rocks drilled, to be present during the performance of the contracts. However, the records kept in the normal course of drilling are deemed complete enough to be reportworthy. This information is presented here together with the findings made in studies of the rocks involved, with the thought that it may attract the comments of others who may have encountered similar refractory drilling conditions. A pooling of knowledge on the problem would be of material aid in devising more efficient cutting tools and procedures for penetrating this kind of rock. Drilling Blastholes in the Williamsville Granite Due to the unsatisfactory perform- ance of pneumatic percussion drills in boring blastholes on a construction contract near Williamsville, Mo., tests were made with a diamond drill. The poor progress achieved and the excessive loss of diamonds, however, soon led to the abandonment of these trials. The diamonds, in all of the bits tried, lost their cutting edges and acquired a polish after being in service for distances ranging from a few inches to a few feet. Coring bits containing surface-set, whole-stone bortz in a tungsten powder matrix were employed. The cost assignable to bortz wear averaged $7.17 per foot. This item of expense is several times the amount normally expended in diamond drilling in firm, unfractured, granitic rocks. Diamond-impregnated, tungsten carbide bits also were used without success. The diamond wear was at the rate of $0.98 per foot, but the diamond chips became too polished for further duty in less than a foot of drilling. The Williamsville granite is pink and medium-grained. In the hand specimen, it has a fresh, sound appearance; it is seemingly composed almost entirely of interlocking grains of feldspar and quartz and has no discernible features suggesting a greater durability than is usually found in rocks with this composition and texture. Microscopic examination, however, reveals a predominance of feldspar grains with more or less regularly distributed and sharply angular masses of quartz (see Fig 1). The pattern assumed by the two minerals in this mode of occurrence is referred to as a "graphic intergrowth," as it bears some resemblance to the cuneiform characters of ancient Persian writing. The other principal constituents are quartz-free feldspars (microcline and orthoclase) and quartz. All of these constituents are in nearly equidimensional grains, ranging up to about 3 mm in length. In diamond or churn drilling for the prospecting of ore bodies, two products can be used for quantitative analyses; i.e., the core and the cuttings, or sludge. Some operators prefer an assay of core; others insist that the sludge be sent for analysis. Both must recover the sludge for check samples or for assays if there is no core recovery for any particular section of the diamond-drill hole. The Freeport Sulphur Co. found that numerous cumbersome sludge boxes or barrels were inconvenient and delayed drilling. The sludge settled slowly in the ordinary shallow, rectangular diamond-drill boxes and its total removal from the container was difficult, time-consuming and unsatisfactory; and sampling of deposits of which the metal contents are easily concentrated, as in ores containing cinnabar, gold and silver, is subject to error if the boxes are not thoroughly cleaned. Mr. Charles Ballard, dredge superintendent at Freeport's operation at Grande Ecaille, Louisiana, developed a portable cone while he was in charge of prospecting a mercury property near Tonopah, Nevada, in 1940. Ballard later improved the design while the settler was being used at a manganese property in New Mexico. The operation is based on the "free settling" of comminuted particles in a quiescent liquid. The ordinary sludge box discharges over a lip 8 to 12 in. wide and consequently the water has sufficient velocity so that the discharge water is never clear. The cone settler used by Free-port Sulphur Co. discharges over the entire circumference, which gives a discharge ltp of 9 ft. in the size of cone used at the cinnabar and manganese prospects. Consequently, the velocity of the discharge water is slow enough so that all fine material settles and the discharge water is clear. When the drilling of a sample interval is complete, the sludge can be drawn off by the time the driller is ready to cut another sample. Thus, only one cone is needed per drill. The cone has been used by Freeport successfully in churn-drilling a manganese deposit, in diamond-drilling a mercury deposit, and in diamond-drilling a deposit of ore containing tin, copper, gold and silver. The cone is greatly superior to the old methods of collecting sludge and is now used on all Freeport drilling campaigns in the western states, both for surface and underground drilling. Fig. I shows the important details of a cone designed for average operating conditions, 30 in. in diameter and 36 in. high. Abnormal conditions may require some revisions in design. Fig. 2 shows a working drawing. A hose or pipe larger than the one used to convey water from the pump to the swivel head of the string of rods is connected to the stuffing box at the collar of a diamond-drill hole, The usual T-connection is used. It is not necessary to use a stuffing box if the top of the cone can be placed lower than the collar of the hole. Then the return water and cuttings can be made to flow by gravity. This hose or pipe discharges the cuttings of the drill bit and the return

Barite (BaSO4) is the most important industrial barium mineral from the standpoint of quantity consumed. In 1938 the amount was 365,000 tons. Its uses are numerous, some of the more important being in the production of pigments, as an inert filler in a wide variety of products, as a weighting material in oil-well drilling muds, in the manufacture of some binds of glass, and in the production of barium chemicals. The barite studied in this investigation occurs as the massive variety in a shale replacement formation near Magnet Cove, Ark. It is intimately mixed with quartz and small amounts of iron oxide and residual shale. Complete liberation of barite and quartz is not obtained when the rock is ground to I00 per cent through 325 mesh. The crude rock with which all test work was done assayed 85.1 per cent BaS04, II.II. per cent SiO2, and 2.85 per cent R2O3. Its specific gravity was 4.03. It was found in the course of the investigation that the barite contained a small amount of uniformly distributed carbonaceous material, so intimately dispersed that it could not be seen with the microscope, but gave a definite gray cast to the barite concentrates. The color of the barite in polished sections of the crude rock ranged from gray to almost black, while finely ground powder was a reddish gray. The reddish hue was due to the iron oxide present. In 1939, under the supervision of Oliver C. Ralston,* the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Milwhite Company, of Houston, Texas, undertook to study the flotation of barite from Magnet Cove, Ark. Flotation of several southern barite ores had already been investigated by the Bureau of Mines.' The Magnet Cove barite was unique, however, in that it had to be ground to such an extremely small particle size for liberation. The flotation of non-metallic minerals in the presence of a large amount of slime is usually very difficult, and when done is an innovation calling for conditions different from those under which granular material is separated. Laboratory Flotation Work Preliminary investigation showed that the flotation reagents recommended by O'Meara and Coel for separating barite and siliceous material were suitable, but much larger quantities of reagents were required to separate such finely divided material. Moreover, it was found that careful control of the frothing was necessary. When oleic acid and sodium silicate were used a voluminous froth was observed at the beginning of a test, and toward the end there was not enough froth to effect complete recovery of barite. The addition of pine oil as a frother gave proper frothing for the duration of the test, and the substitution of coconut fatty acid (crude lauric acid) for oleic acid produced a more heavily burdened froth. Calculations are reported on the differential sensitivity of the updip invasion of oil strata of varving permeability to the driving pressure differential. It is assumed that the water-oil interfaces advance with sharp fronts, or that the microscopic displacement efficiency is independent of rate and capillary pressure effects. It is found that, under such conditions, limitations of withdrawal rates will not greatly inhibit the "fingering" and bypassing tendency through high permeability strata unless the differential fluid head across the original oil column is of the order of or exceeds about 80 per cent of the driving pressure differential. In practice, such restrictions will be feasible only for oil reservoirs and aquifers of high permeability and dip, but may develop automatically under combined gas injection and water drive operations. INTRODUCTION A commonly expressed view regarding the intrusion of edge-waters into oil producing formations is that the geometry of such advance is rate sensitive. Specifically, it has been suggested that high rates of advance, stimulated by rapid withdrawals, will lead to "fingering" and an irregular type of invasion, whereas at low withdrawal rates the water encroachment will be more uniform. Two factors tend to support this view. One is the resultant effect of capillary pressure and gravity gradients in the displacement processes' involved in water intrusion, which are magnified at low rates of flow so as to improve the recovery efficiency. The other is the direct retarding effect of the rising water head as it advances upslope into the producing area. Capillary pressure forces give rise to a rate sensitivity of the oil recovery by water displacement in uniform strata as well as differential effects in non-uniform formations. These are basically independent of the effect of gravity and would also occur in horizontal beds or when the oil and water have the same density. Unfortunately, however, the fundamental equation describing the displacement process under the action of capillary pressures can be solved only by numerical or graphical procedures, and moreover the solutions are sensitive to the character of the capillary pressure and relative permeability curves.* On the other hand, the direct effect of gravity can be given a formal analytical solution if the simplifying assumption is introduced that the water advances with sharp fronts in the individual uniform strata. It depends on the absolute permeabilities of the water invaded zones and hence results in a rate sensitivity of the differential invasion in stratified media. Although a tieatment of this factor alone will not give a complete evaluation of the effect of rate on water intrusion in non-uniform pays, it should provide at least a semiquantitative measure of the sensitivity of "fingering" to withdrawal rate. Such a treatment will be presented in the following sections. GENERAL THEORY The basic element of the theory is the history of water advance updip in a uniform stratum (Fig. 1). TYPICAL of southwestern Wyoming are coal structures that dip from 4° to 17°. Those at the Reliance and Winton mines of the Union Pacific Coal Co. average 91/2 and 15°, respectively, and dip almost directly to the west. By using a hoist for main haulage, a method of mining has been developed whereby four places are driven on the pitch of the seam. Slightly upgrade from the strike at intervals of 300 ft. a two-entry system is driven to the north and to the south. In both fields, which are nongassy, an exhaust system of ventilation is used. Slope, manway, and lower or haulage entries are placed on the intake. Two air-courses and upper or breaking entries are placed on the return. A retreat system of mining is used exclusively. From the opening of its first coal mine, in the year 1868, until 1923, when the Joy loader was introduced into The Union Pacific Coal Company's operations, slopes, aircourses, and manways were driven by hand. Development work was conducted on the night shift or off shift, and the main hoist was used for haulage. The slope was driven down the pitch with crosscuts turned at intervals of 75 ft. and entries at 230 ft. Connections to the workings above were made by driving up the pitch 75 ft. Mule haulage was used to furnish cars to the hand loaders driving planes up the pitch. A sheave was placed at the upper end of the plane with a I¼-in. hemp rope dou- bling around it and having me end attached to the car and the other to the mule. The mulc, pulling downhill, raised to the working face a small wooden car of one-ton capacity. With the introduction of mechanical loading, mule haulage and small wooden cars disappeared and auxiliary hoists, electric locomotives, and steel cars with a capacity of 4 tons were substituted. Development work was done during two or three shifts of the 24-hr. period. Driving of haulage slopes down the pitch by hand continued. Crosscut intervals were changed to Ioo ft. and the crosscuts were driven with shaking conveyors. With the use of a 90° swivel, aircourses and manways were driven up the pitch. Entry intervals were changed from 230 ft. to 300 feet. Mobile loaders of the Joy type were first employed by this company in the year 1923 at Hanna, Wyo. In 1928, two 4-BU Joy loaders were transferred from Hanna to Winton No. I mine, where they were used in driving slopes and entries. At the time of transfer, the machines were about worn out and were not suited to the steep pitch, therefore frequent breakdowns occurred. However, experience justified the belief that the mobile loader was fitted for driving slopes in this field. During 1937 a unit was installed in Reliance No. 7 mine, and during 1939 one in Winton No. 7½ mine. With the introduction of this type of mobile loader, a new era of development began. The simultaneous adsorption of water and hydrocarbon vapor from natural gas by three grades of alumina has been studied at atmospheric pressure and temperature. Results of this investigation reveal that the presence of water vapor in the gas inhibits the adsorption of hydrocarbon vapor, although the presence of the latter does not have a pronounced effect upon the adsorption of water vapor. Adsorption of water-hydrocarbon mixtures from gas is divided into three phases. In the first, both water and hydrocarbon vapor are adsorbed; in the second, adsorption of water vapor proceeds while desorption of hydrocarbon takes place; in the third phase, the adsorbyt approaches complete saturation with respect to both water and hydrocarbon vapors. Both theory and experimental data can be applied to design and operation of commercial dehydration plants, and an illustration is presented. Introduction Dehydration of natural gas becomes increasingly important as the operating pressures employed in gas processing and transmission are increased above 500 ib. per sq. in. Gas produced from high-pressure wells is saturated with water vapor when it leaves the reservoir and it continues into the processing plant or transmission system in a saturated condition because of the substantial decrease in temperature due to expansion at the wellhead. Usually this gas is accompanied by liquid water and hydrocarbons that have condensed with the change in temperature and pressure. Without dehydration, gas temperatures must be held at relatively high levels to prevent solidification of gas hydrates. According to Hammerschmidt's data8 on the relationship of pressure to the freezing point of natural-gas hydrates, the minimum safe operating temperatures range from 55' to go°F. for pressures ranging from 500 to 3000 lb. per sq. in., respectively. Often it is difficult to maintain gas temperatures above the hydrate-freezing temperature because of climatic conditions, unless flow-line heaters are installed. Also, in processing gas for its gasoline content at high pressures, it is desirable to employ operating temperatures lower than the hydrate-freezing point. In distributing high-pressure gas, the large pressure drop from line pressure to town-gate pressure often prbduces sufficient cooling to freeze the regulators and disrupt consumer service. Therefore, it is highly essential to dehydrate high-pressure natural gas if smooth and economical operation is to be maintained at all times. Few published data are available on the simultaneous adsorption of water and hydrocarbon vapors. The place of geophysics in the curriculum of a college or an engineering school has been much discussed. There is uncertainty as to whether the graduate may be called a "geological geophysicist" or a "geophysical geologist." Some have used the term "geophysical engineer." The question of the specialized undergraduate curriculum versus a general undergraduate training in the parent sciences with the addition of cultural electives has been and is still being argued. The literature during the past Io years shows that there are two rather definite schools of thought on this subject. The prospective employer, engaged in active geophysical exploration, visualizes the graduate in terms of the routine work he will do in the field. The school administrator, grounded in many years of tradition in the cultural type of education, visualizes the graduate in terms of his position in a political and cultural society as well as in his work as a professional geophysicist. Both are right and both wrong. A third school of thought, that of the student himself, has been almost totally ignored. It would seem best, for the purpose of this paper, to treat these various points and allied material separately, and then to integrate the conclusions as a set of conditions that should be fulfilled as far as possible in the ideal curriculum. At the end the relationship of our findings to the curriculum that has been tentatively adopted at the University of Pittsburgh will be considered. Divisions in Definition or Field of Geophysics Geophysics is that field of science in which geological and earth problems are solved with the use of physical and chemical techniques. Altogether too much attention has been paid to the artificial separation in this science of the commercial applications from the so-called "pure" or academic geophysics. The only real difference in the two types of work is one of scale of operations. In the commercial field the scale is large in terms of fmancial backing, immediate economic importance, and speed of operations. In the academic field the scale is large in terms of breadth of interests, in eventual economic importance, and length of time allowable for theoretical investigations. In exploration work the scale is small in terms of dimensions, since the methods are applicable only to the outer 20,000 ft. or SO of the earth's crust. In academic work, the student is not pressed for results of immediate economic importance, and therefore can afford to spend more time on problems that seem unimportant at the time. In the sense of background knowledge of the parent sciences necessary to the geophysicist, no essential difference can be found. Physics, chemistry, geology, and mathematics together, and in their proper proportionate amounts, form the matrix from which geophysical ideas and methods may spring.

The North Texas district incorporated in this paper corresponds with the Railroad Commission's District No. 9, and includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Knox, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger, and Young.† Table I,Oil and Gas Production in North Texas District, has been changed to conform with the nomenclature of pools designated by the Commission in order to facilitate compilation of the data, since most of the companies operating in the area are coming more and more to recognize one central authority in the matter of naming each new oil pool. No effort is being made to discuss the structural characteristics of the region, since it is generally known by oil men that most of the oil and gas comes from Pennsyl-vanian, with some of less importance from the Mississippian and Ordovician. Development during 1944 There were 1550 wells drilled during 1944, an increase of 450. Of this number, 677 were completed as oil wells, and 11 as gassers. Production increased 1,505,025 bbl., making the year's total 43,172,005 bbl. of oil having an average gravity of 40". Development generally, however, was somewhat disappointing. The 47 new pools, extensions, or new pay horizons in old fields, had a combined initial production of only 19,146 bbl. It is estimated that these wells added approximately 10,000,000 bbl. to the reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was in the Caddo conglomerate in the Hildreth pool, Montague County. During the year, 66 wells were completed as the result of three extensions, I to 136 miles west, northwest and north of the field. Young, Archer, and Clay were the most active counties. Eleven new potential - oil fields were developed in Young County, nine in Archer and nine in Clay. Outlook for 1945 In spite of the fact that exploration as a whole was disappointing in 1944, prospects for increased development are bright for 1945. At the close of last year, 2.1 geophysical crews were operating in the district, which, together with the Ohio Oil Company's No. I W. R. Ross, a wildcat Strawn discovery in King County, 1 1/2 miles beyond the west boundary of district 9, stimulated a lease play extending over four counties. The bibliography of mining methods in the past few years has contained many articles dealing with the use of the diamond drill for blasthole drilling. In the Canadian mines, this method has been used with great success in stoping at Noranda, Aldermac, Waite Amulet, East Malartic and Sladen Malartic mines in the Province of Quebec. It has also been used at the Dorchester and Beattie gold mines in Duparquet, Quebec. The method has found useful application at Copper Mountain mine, British Colombia, and at Flin Flon mine in Manitoba. In the United States, the diamond drill blasthole method has been used at Cornwall Iron Ore Mines in Pennsylvania and at the Republic Steel Corporation magnetite properties in the Port Henry district of northern New York. In the Lake Superior iron district, the method has been used at the Anvil-Palms mine of Pickands, Mather and Co. at Bessemer, Mich., and is also used at the Book mine of the North Range Mining Co. at Alpha, Mich. Other companies in the district have also experimented in some degree with the method at some of their properties. This Paper is being offered as a prelimi- nary report on the use of the diamond drill method of stoping at the Book mine. Sufficient work has been done with it to prove its worth and it is the purpose of the article to present some results, operational details, equipment ideas and recommendstions which we have found in its use at our mine. Location and Description The Book mine is situated about a mile north of the village of Alpha, in the NE-NE1/4 and the SE-NE1/4 of set 12-42-33, between the Dunn mine and the Balkan-~~d~~~ mine, and about four miles southwest of the village of Crystal Falls, on the menominee Range of Michigan, The property was found to have ore near surface in sufficient quantities for open-pit operations and stripping was begun in the latter part of 1942 to prepare it for ore production in 1943. During 1943, 288,447 tons of direct shipping ore were produced from the open pit and 382,933 tons in 1944 While the mine was being operated as an open pit some 350,000 tons of lean ore were stockpiled for later treatment. This material is beilng treated in a washing and jig plant and concentrates are produced during the shipping season. The ore bodies at the Book mine are characteristic of the Menominee Range. They are found on the flanks of sharply folded anticlines which have a fairly steep pitch to the northwest. The open-pit operatiOns in 1943 and 1944 revealed two of these anticlinal structures.
