All persons, actively engaged in your profession, must have a natural interest in the subject of weights and measures. All members of the engineering profession have to do with operations of weighing and measuring—some with measuring more than weighing, and some with weighing more than measuring—but all with both of these processes to a greater or less degree. Methods of weighing and measuring have improved constantly from the earliest times and have kept pace with the advance of other technical processes. It is, therefore, believed that you will be interested in a few remarks concerning some of the more recent advances in relation to the establishment of decimal standards of length and mass in this country. Before speaking of this, I will refer very briefly to some facts which may not be very generally known regarding our customary system of weights and measures. Although the yard is universally accepted as the unit of length, and the pound as the unit of mass, it is not generally understood, I believe, just in what respect the yard is the unit of length, or the pound the unit of mass. That is to say, it is not generally known in what degree these units have been legalized by Acts of congress. Doubtless, many of you are familiar with the facts which I will briefly recapitulate. The Constitution of the United States authorizes Congress to establish a system of weights, measures and coinage. The establishment of a system of coinage, as you know, was one of the first acts of the government, and the system then adopted is certainly one of the most perfect, if not the most perfect, that the world has yet seen. But, although Congress had the power to establish a system of weights and measures, it has never yet seen fit to exercise this power; that is to say, Congress has never yet

The Duquesne property of the Callahan Zinc-Lead Co. is about 20 miles east of Nogales, in southern Arizona. One mine is near the mill, but most of the mill feed is hauled in by truck from a number of small mines. The same sulphides are found in all the ores, in general, but the amounts vary considerably. All ores contain silver, copper, lead and zinc minerals but one mine ships ore high in silver and lead and low in copper and zinc; while another mine ships ore high in copper and zinc, and low in silver and lead. The common sulphides are galena, carrying most of the silver; chalcopyrite; sphalerite, carrying iron in solid solution; and pyrite, in a gangue consisting of limestone, quartz and garnet. Mineralization is fairly coarse. At the present grind of about 66 per cent minus 200 mesh most of the sulphides are liberated A small amount of chalcopyrite is locked up with the sphalerite and cannot be liberated at an economic grind, and the copper carried into the zinc concentrate with the sphalerite accounts for the comparatively poor recovery of copper in the copper-lead concentrate. Production oF Two Concentrates The milling problem, which was complicated by the extreme variation in the grade of the feed, was first attacked with the idea of producing a silver-copper-lead con- centrate and a zinc concentrate, both with satisfactory grades and recoveries. By February 1941, it was felt that these objectives had been attained, when the grades of the various products and the recoveries were as shown in Table I. A rough outline of the flowsheet and reagents used is as follows: Minus ¾-in. feed to a 7-ft. by 36-in. Hardinge ball mill working in closed circuit with a 36-in. Wemco classifier. The classifier overflow passes to the second cell of an 8-cell bank of No. 18 Special Denver Sub-A flotation machines (volume, 22.5 cu. ft. per cell). A rougher concentrate is removed from the second to the fifth cells inclusive, and returned to the first cell, which is the cleaner. A scavenger concentrate is removed from the sixth, seventh, and eighth cells, and returned to the third cell. Consump-

Current mineral industry trends toward handling the high tonnages of lower grade ore and tailings retreat lead to a continuing need for large volume flotation cells. The benefits which accompany the larger cell flotation circuit include reduced capital cost, less mill floor space, reduced operational complexity, and less maintenance, provided the metallurgical performance and solids suspension capability of the cell are not compromised. This study reviews development considerations pertinent to large mechanical air induction type flotation cells from the standpoint of cell internal hydrodynamic characteristics and metallurgical performance. While the importance of process related factors such as chemical usage, pH control, solids size and loading, and circuit arrangement cannot be denied, this study will emphasize the relationship of cell size (volume), mechanism geometry (impeller diameter), and mechanism operating conditions (rotor speed and submergence), to air transfer, liquid circulation, liquid "rise velocity" and mechanism power draw. Specific hydraulic performance maps for large capacity 300 and 500 cu ft flotation cells will be reviewed in terms of the relationship between the operational variables and the air and liquid flow conditions within the cell. Metallurgical results, obtained under plant operating conditions for 300 and 500 cu ft cells, are included to illustrate the metallurgical performance similarity of flotation cells which follow hydrodynamic scale-up criteria set forth in this investigation.

CHALK is soft, pulverulent limestone formed from calcareous remains of microscopic organisms. Whiting is the powder made by the fine- grinding of limestone. Although European chalk dominated the early American market and is still shipped to the eastern and western seaboards, the domestic producer, by new technical processing, improved equipment, and proper selection and mixing of raw materials has shown that the United States can be independent of foreign sources. DISTRIBUTION European Chalk-Outcrops of Cretaceous chalk are found in the area roughly bounded by Antrim, Ireland, on the east, East Prussia on the west, Sweden and Scotland on the north, and Nice, France, on the south. Commercial chalk is mined from the chalk cliffs between Dover and Hull, England; from deposits near Mons, in the Departments of Pas de Calais and Nord in northern France; and from similar de- posits in Denmark and Belgium. United States-Some grade of limestone is found in every state of the Union, but true chalk of Cretaceous age is limited to three large areas in the central and southern states. Niobrara (Cretaceous) chalk outcrops are found as a narrow band encircling the Black Hills in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska, and in much larger exposures in southeastern South Dakota, eastern Nebraska, and western Kansas. A third chalk belt extends from west central Arkansas into Oklahoma and connects with the Austin beds, which almost cross Texas. In the southeastern states, the Selma chalk extends from western Tennessee south through northern Mississippi and turns east across central Alabama. Most of the domestic chalks are discolored with iron oxide or carbon. Some marls can be included with chalks of commercial possibilities. ARTHUR BRICE deSAULLES In the death of, Major A. B. deSaulles at South Bethlehem, Pa., on Dec. 24, 1917, the Institute lost a valued and esteemed member, one of the last few of those who, in May, 1871, at Wilkes-Barre, attended the first meeting of the Institute, in response to a call that had been issued by R. P. Rothwell, Eckley B. Coxe, and Martin Coryell. Major deSaulles was born Jan. 8, 1840, at New Orleans, and was the son of Louis and Armide Longer deSaulles, each of French descent. As a boy he was privately tutored in the South, and then schooled in New England to enter the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was graduated with honors in the class of '59. Following his graduation he studied in France and Germany for two years, returning to New Orleans in 1861 to enter the Confederate Army, in which he served with distinction- as an engineer throughout the Civil War, rising to the rank of Major and the command of his Corps. After the close of the war he pursued his studies abroad for another year, returning to New York in April, 1866, when be became engineer for the New York & Schuylkill Coal Company, and remained at its plant near Wilkes-Barre until October, 1871, when it was sold to the Philadelphia & Reading Coal and Iron Company.. He then returned to New York where for several years he was engaged in the practice of his profession. In 1869, he married Catharine M. Heckscher, daughter of Charles Heckscher of New York City. Mrs. deSaulles survives him. In 1876, Major deSaulles became superintendent of the Dunbar Furnace Company in Fayette County, Pa., with which company he remained until 1883. IT is well known that the martensite reaction can be induced to occur isothermally above the M, temperature by plastic deformation of an alloy in its austenitic state, and also that as the test temperature is increased above the M. temperature, plastic deformation under a given set of conditions merely causes additional slip with a corresponding tendency toward the formation of less martensite per unit of strain. Thus it appears that a maximum temperature exists above which martensite cannot be formed isothermally by plastic deformation. This temperature is commonly designated as the equilibrium temperature Te. Attempts to determine experimentally the equilibrium temperature have indicated that a critical temperature is observed, under a given set of conditions, above which martensite cannot be formed isothermally by plastic deformation. But the observation of a "so called" critical temperature, Te, should not be confused with the equilibrium temperature, Te. In order to clarify this anomaly, true stress-strain curves were obtained for a series of type 304 stainless steel specimens (manufacturer's analysis, 0.08 pct C, 18 to 20 pct Cr, 8 to 10 pct Ni, balance Fe) over the temperature range 67" to 300°K.' Since martensite is magnetic, a quantitative measure of the amount of martensite that was produced by plastic deformation was obtained by determining the magnetic permeability as a function of strain. The results of these tests are given in Fig. 1. They appear to indicate that a plastic critical point does exist at about 240°K for the stainless steel under investigation here. But that 240 °K is not the equilibrium temperature nor even a true plastic critical temperature can be seen from Fig. 2 wherein the permeability of the same material is shown to increase with cold rolling at 293 OK. Consequently the observation of a "so called" plastic critical temperature is dependent on the mode of deformation and has no theoretical significance. THE smelting of galena in the ore hearth has been practiced in many countries for several hundred years with varying success. In the United States the water-jacketed American hearths and the Jumbo hearths have found some favor, in the Missouri lead belt, where large quantities of non-argentiferous galena concentrates are produced. In form and method of operation the ore hearth has changed but little since its earliest conception. A detailed description of the furnace is not needed here; it has been fully described in most works on the metallurgy of lead and in many technical papers. Since its field is restricted to non-argentiferous galena, containing over 68 per cent. of lead, its .use is limited to a few districts; and, on account of certain disadvantages attending its operation, modern sintering and blast-furnace practice has nearly driven it out of the Missouri field. It is not generally known that the cost of producing pig lead is smaller by the hearth method than by sintering and blast-furnace smelting. Yet it is doubtful if any metallurgist knowing this to be true would recommend an American hearth installation-by reason of the disadvantages which will be briefly enumerated. The furnace has been limited to a length of from 4 to 5 ft., requiring for its operation two men working an 8-hr. shift as a maximum. The product per man is small; the work is hot and laborious; and the difficulty of completely removing the dust and fume has made it a notorious source of lead poisoning. Although suitable, for, operations on a small scale a large number of hearths would be required for a plant smelting 10,000 tons of 68 to 70 per cent. concentrates per month; and the number of semi-skilled laborers would be six times the number of hearths-a condition which is prohibitive. On account of the high percentage of dust and fume produced, a large flue and bag-house installation is required and, in the past, the handling and re-treatment of. this dust and fume has been a serious problem.

An electrical model study has been mode to estimate the effect of horizontal fractures in thick reservoirs on pattern conductivity. For the patterns studied, it is shown that fracturing all the wells in the pattern in-creases the conductivity considerably more than frac-turing only single wells. For certain conditions one large fracture is more effective in increasing conductivity than several fractures of half the radius. Particularly in thick reservoirs and with large fractures, the center of the pay is found to be more responsive than other locations. For the seven-spot pattern fracturing the center well is more effective in increasing pattern con-ductivity than fracturing all outer wells with fractures of the same size. INTRODUCTION Although commercial fracturing has been used for some time very little quantitative information is known about the effects of fractures on reservoir behavior. The purpose of this work was to estimate the effect of horizontal fractures in thick reservoirs on the con-ductivity of various flooding and cycling patterns.2 Circular fractures originating at the wellbore and extending symmetrically into the pay were considered. ANALYSIS Electrical models were used in making this study. Horizontal fractures were simulated by copper sheets shaped like the fractures and of a proportional size; the wellbore was simulated by a copper wire. A dilute salt solution served as a conducting medium. A con-ductivity bridge was used to measure the conductivities of the various patterns studied. EFFECT OF HORIZONTAL FRACTURES ON CONDUCTIVITY Fig. 1 shows the effect on square and staggered line drive patterns of horizontal fractures located in the center of the pay. The model is shown schematically in the insert. The upper and lower groups of lines show the effect on conductivity when all wells are fractured, and when only one well is fractured, respectively. In general, pattern conductivities are substantially improved by fracturing all wells. Fig. 2 shows the effect of multiple horizontal frac-tures on the conductivity of a line-drive pattern. At

A number of Cu-SiO, and Cu-A1203 alloys of low oxide content, produced by internal oxidation of copper-silicon and copper-aluminum dilute solid solutions, were exposed at temperatures up to 1050°C for fairly long times to bring about partial or total re crystallization. The creep-rupture properties of these re crystallized alloys were compared to those in the as-extruded condition at 450° C. Some of the alloys were cold worked after re crystallization to note changes in creep-rupture properties, also at 450OC. SINCE the introduction of the SAP alloy in 1949,~ many studies have been carried out on similar oxide and intermetallic dispersion hardened alloys to determine properties and to establish the mechanisms involved in the strengthening process which led to stable, high-temperature behavior.'-' To date, it has been indicated that, however achieved, the structure should be composed of a continuous ductile metal matrix in which is dispersed a fine, submicron size, hard, insoluble second phase (or at least, essentially insoluble at temperatures very near the melting point), with a submicron or near submicron interparticle spacing. Stored energy, obtained by a high strain rate deformation process appears desirable, as an additional strengthening means beyond pure dispersion.=

THE work described in this paper was carried out under the sponsorship of the Foreign Economics Administration and in cooperation with the Departamento Nacionál da Produção Mineral, Rio de Janeiro. The project was undertaken to obtain complete data on the variations in washability of coal to be used for coke manufacture in the steel industry and to determine the economy of preliminary hand-sorting operations. The coal-producing industry of Brazil is in that pioneering stage in which operat¬ing practices and methods are just being developed. Increased wartime demand for fuel, coincident with a drastic curtailment of foreign supplies due to lack of shipping facilities, has put a tremendous pressure on the national industry to furnish more coal. Under this incentive, production facilities are being expanded and new methods of operation are being tested. Such changes are being developed both by improvement of existing methods that originated in the field and by adaptation and modification of methods introduced from the United States and Europe. These mining condi¬tions and mining practices in Brazil are typical of what the American mining engineer will find in many instances when he goes pioneering into the developing coal fields of the Southern Hemisphere. The producing coal fields of Brazil are all in the southern states of that country. The coal measures are in a band roughly paralleling the coast and extending in a generally southwesterly direction from northern São Paulo through the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul to near the Uruguayan border in the vicinity of Bajé. The accompanying map1 (Fig. I shows the general location of these fields and also the principal routes of movement of both national and imported coal in a late pre-war year (1940). In the second half of the 19th century, bimetallism progressively was replaced by gold standard. After World War I and the 1931-33 depression, gold was mainly reserved for official international transactions and internal use was restricted. Changes since 1971 have shrunk official international use of gold. International payments deficits and surpluses are now financed by Private and official credit, rarely by gold. This historical review covers evolution of: (1) internal and external private use, (2) internal official use, (3) external official use, (4) its role in the International Monetary Fund, and (5) use as unit of account. For this paper I have tried to take a longer perspective than is usually possible, and to look, even if very briefly, at the changing relationship of gold to the monetary system over the last 200 years or so. There are, I believe, some long-term trends, continuing down to the present day. These trends have seen gold replaced by some form of paper assets in one monetary function after another. These past trends may help us to understand where gold stands now, and possibly will throw some light on the future. Because it seems to me that gold in the past has performed various functions related closely or marginally to money, I have divided this rapid historical review into several sections: (1) the internal and external private use of gold, (2) the internal official use of gold, (3) the external official use of gold, (4) gold and the International Monetary Fund, and (5)gold as a unit of account.

A party, consisting of George I. Adams, of the United States Geological Survey, A. H. Purdue, of the University of Arkansas, and Ernest F. Burchard, was engaged, during the summer of 1902, in the study of the zinc- and lead-deposits of Northern Arkansas. An extensive report on this field is now in preparation. The following preliminary statement of results and conclusions is made in advance of the final publication, which will be accompanied by detailed geologic maps and other illustrations and a fuller treatment of the subject. Location.—The Northern Arkansas field embraces Marion county and adjacent portions of Boone, Baxter, Newton and Searcy counties. Outside of this area there are a few scat tered mines, notably in Sharp and Lawrence counties. The mining development lies north of the Boston mountains, in what is known as the Ozark Plateau. The country has a broken surface, as a result of dissection by streams, and there are numerous exposures of the mineral-bearing horizons in the valley slopes. This has greatly facilitated prospecting. History.—Lead-ore was discovered in Northern Arkansas by the early explorers and pioneers, and at first was utilized for rifle-ballets. Later, it attracted considerable attention, and in the '50's was smelted in the vicinity of Lead Hill. There was a revival of the industry during the "70's, but the cost of transportation was so great that it was practically abandoned. Zinc-ores at first attracted little attention, probably because they were not so well understood. Before the Civil War, however, some zinc was smelted. In the '80's, prospecting was carried on generally throughout the field, and resulted in finding zinc at so many places and so readily accessible that

In mid-1970, Park City Ventures, a Utah partnership of Asarco and the Anaconda Company, initiated a six-phase exploration and development program in the Park City District, Utah. Geologic studies had delineated a number of exploration targets in several areas of the district. Discovery of ore in any of the target areas and continued favorable downdip development below then productive ore bodies would allow for reserve expansion and mill construction. The targets were: replacement mineralization in the Mississippian Humbug formation below productive ore bodies on the east flank of the Park City anticline; replacement mineralization in the Humbug formation in an unexplored fault block in the footwall of the Hawkeye structure on the east flank of the anticline; vein and replacement mineralization along the Silver Fissure; potentially higher grade replacement mineralization in the Humbug formation in a theorized structural block on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario vein; replacement mineralization in the Permian Park City formation in the West End shaft area of the Silver King mine; vein mineralization along the Back vein in the Judge mine. In 1971 the Judge and Silver King Projects were suspended, due to a 30% cutback in the exploration budget. In spite of the cutback additional reserves were developed below the Humbug East Flank ore bodies; a major zone of ore grade mineralization was discovered along the Silver Fissure, five new ore bodies were found in the Humbug and Doughnut formations on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario vein. First concentrates were shipped from a new mill in May 1975.

How to interpret the composition of rocks has been a question which has caused a great deal of discussion and investigation among geologists and chemists. It is evident that that analysis will give the clearest results, which will give the relative proportion of the different minerals composing the rock as well as the weight of their different constituents. This, however, is a very difficult matter, and in those rocks which seem to the naked eye entirely compact, like obsidian and other rocks of that class, appears to be impossible. Cordier, in the early part of the century, invented a process which is known as the " mechanical analysis of rocks," which is really a method of mechanical preparation, and consists in crushing the rock to a certain fineness, and then, by virtue of their density, washing out the different minerals, so as to make a mineralogical analysis, separating completely the different constituents of the rocks. In the hands of so skilful a man, this was a comparatively easy matter, and Cordier found no difficulty in ascertaining the mineralogical composition of a rock. The ultimate chemical composition was ascertained from the sum of the elements contained in the different materials. In the light of to-day, it is very easy to see that the complete chemical analysis of the rock does not necessarily lead to the explanation of its character. It has been so difficult, however, to have any other kind of analysis made that most chemical examinations have been made as ultimate, and not as mineralogical analyses. The panning out of the different minerals composing the rock, which are often very nearly of the same specific gravity, is so difficult that a person of ordinary mechanical skill is scarcely able to do it; consequently the mechanical analysis which Cordier proposed, and was able himself so skilfully to effect, has never been practiced to any extent. A school was formed in France consisting of a very small number of Cordier's followers, which, in face of the difficulty of acquiring the method, very soon died out as a school, though some of his most skilful followers are still living. I WAS led some time ago to draft a statement of economic principles immediately affecting our national welfare from the standpoint of the engineer. It was the intention to offer this to the American Engineering Council as a resolution to be adopted, or a declaration to be made, of course after suitable con-sideration and debate. The presentation has not been . formally made, but I have been asked to let it be made to the mining engineers through the medium of MINING AND METALLURGY, the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers being a constituent part of the Federated American Engineering Societies. I shall welcome any expressions of opinion that this statement may inspire. The statement follows: The engineers of, the United States, functioning through the American Engineering Council of the, Federated American Engineering Societies, feel it their duty to advise the American people respecting the present state of economic affairs in the nation, just as an individual engineer would his client. The people of the United States constitute a great corpora-tion, whose business affairs are analogous to those of a commercial company -multiplied many times. The engineers feel constrained to offer their opinion owing to the responsibility to do things which rests upon them. Confronted by the steady impoverishment of natural resources and the operation of the economic law of diminishing returns it devolves upon management, functioning through the engineering profession aided by scientists, to make such improvements leading to increased production and such elimination of wastes as to offset the increasing adversities of nature merely to hold our own; and to do more than offset them in order to improve the scale of living of the people. The engineers accept this responsibility, but in so doing they demand attention to their advice respecting fundamental economic matters, lest they be unduly hampered in the performance of the professional duties, which they acknowledge. The American Engineering Council therefore declares the following as the advice of engineers to the American people:

Maurer's review summarizes quite thoroughly the various theoretical developments and experimental findings that contribute to the knowledge of rock mechanics in drilling. This discussion supplements Maurer's paper by including generalities that either have been incompletely treated in his review, or formulated from new considerations by the discussant and from hitherto unpublished experimental data. These generalities are associated with the observation that all mechanical methods of rock drilling essentially comprise a sequence of indexed, concentrated loadings on the bottom of the hole being drilled.

(written discussion *).-Without doubt the excellent results obtained at Ajo will cause surprise among metallurgists; 75 per cent. average capacity and 80 per cent. extraction during the first year of operation of a plant using a new metallurgical process are figures that speak for themselves. It is obvious that the most troublesome feature of the process is the fouling of solutions. The effects of this are most evident in the electrolytic tank house; but apparently the solutions are so heavily loaded with salts that their dissolving power is also impaired. This is indicated by the fact that copper comes into solution during washing after the leaching of the ore is completed, as shown by the decreasing ratio of acid to copper in the various washes tabulated in Table 4, and also by the fact that 4.9 per cent. of the total copper in the ore remains in the tailings in a soluble form. Even though the extraction in leaching and the ampere efficiency in electrolysis would be benefited by keeping the salts in solution at a lower concentration, it is doubtful whether it would pay to decrease these salts by discarding more electrolyte without other changes in the, process, since this would increase the amount of cement copper produced, which is already very large. If, however, it would not disturb the process otherwise, this object could be accomplished by increasing the range of electrolysis, so that solution going to the tank house would contain, say, 4 per cent. copper and 1 per cent. acid, and the solution returned to the leaching plant 1 1/2 per cent. copper and 4.8 per cent. acid, and by increasing the volume of solution to be discarded, this to be taken from the electrolyzed solution returned to the leaching plant. By this arrangement, more salts will be removed from the system per ton of cement copper produced; and if sufficient solution is discarded to keep the iron content down to 1 1/2 per cent. it would he feasible to recover the copper from

Illinois supplies coal to seven states in the Upper Mississippi Valley —Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and portions of the Dakotas, Nebraska and Kansas. In this same area are marketed large quantities of coal from West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere; fuel oil from the crude petroleum supplies of the Mid-Continent fields, and natural gas from Louisiana, Kansas and the Texas Panhandle. The boundaries of this "Illinois coal-market area" are determined by competition from other coal fields and from other forms of fuel. Within the area so described 90 per cent of Illinois coal is marketed. Thus in the Southwest, an abundance of fuel-oil supplies and natural gas dominates the market almost to the exclusion of coal. The westward movement of Illinois coal in Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas is met by an eastward flow of high-grade coals from Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. In the lake-shore counties of Minnesota and Wisconsin, the market is dominated by Appalachian coals, cheaply carried over the Great Lakes and reaching the ports of Lake Michigan and at the head of Lake Superior. Illinois coals find their largest market in the southern and western sections of these two lake states. Only small quantities of Illinois coals are shipped east of the state line. This market area is occupied entirely by the neighboring coal fields of Indiana and the Appalachian coal fields in Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Illinois Coal-makket Area , With these factors in mind, the map of the Illinois coal-market area may be drawn. Within this boundary is the area that is logically and economically served by Illinois coal. However, this area is by no means exclusively dependent upon coal from Illinois mines. The preponderance. of Appalachian coal in Wisconsin and Minnesota has been mentioned. Appalachian coal, also, moves in large tonnages into Illinois itself, particularly the Chicago district. The Iowa and Missouri local coals share the market with imported coal from Illinois; throughout the market area, fuel oil and natural gas are important factors in the total energy supply.

Blast-furnace flue dust is one of the most troublesome operating factors in the iron and steel industry. It is usually involved in all the unpleasant phases of blast-furnace operations. It adds to our aggravations until we are willing to spend large sums of money to keep it out of our stoves and boilers and more money to handle it again and again on one scheme or another to induce the furnaces to retain it without bad after effects. Several successful operators claim that it is useless to recharge raw flue dust because the furnace would never have blown it out if it had been suitable material for blast-furnace consumption. Most of us who have made persistent efforts to return raw flue dust to the furnaces have decided that it is very often false economy to do so. Yet some remarkable results have been attained at the Ohio Works of the Carnegie Steel Co. through recharging raw dust. The plant comprises six modern blast furnaces. Up to 1909, about 300,000 tons of flue dust had accumulated in stock piles. During the last 10 years, there have been recharged into these furnaces all of the flue dust recovered from the furnace operations, the entire stock pile of Rue dust, and nearly 80,000 tons of dust shipped from other furnaces of the Carnegie Steel Co. The results obtained arc. shown in Table 1.

The introduction and development of the flotation process have proved to be of such momentous importance to the mining industry of the United States that they deserve to be considered historically.* The origin of the use of oily matter in separating minerals in ores is obscure, because its beginnings were unregarded. The story told by Herodotus concerning the recovery of gold from the mud of a lake by means of feathers daubed with pitch in the hands of apocryphal virgins is as pertinent to our inquiry as the yarn, two thousand years later, of a young school-teacher in Colorado that was washing oil-stained ore-sacks in her brother's assay-office when she noted the floating of pyrite on the water contaminated by the oil. In any event, the method patented by Carrie Everaon in 1885 was a complete failure, except as factitious evidence for trying to disprove the originality of subsequent inventions. An early and inadvertent use of the affinity of oil for metallic surfaces is suggested by the story of Jason and the Argonauts, who extracted gold from the gravel of the river Colchis by means of sheepskins. The woolly hide sewed, like the blankets used in our early stamp-mills, to arrest the gold, which was further detained by the oil on the fleece. Strabo, referring to a later period, says that in the country of the Soanes, who inhabit the valley of the Colchis, “the winter torrents are said to bring down even gold, which the barbarians collect in troughs pierced with holes, and lined with fleeces; and hence the fable of the Golden Fleece”.† William Pryce
