One of the limitations of the 3-dimensional Lerchs-Grossmann pit optimisation algorithm has been the difficulty in calculating an optimum pit with variable wall slopes. The difficulties have been related to establishing various wall slopes without changing the sizes of the blocks used in the normal computation, but still retaining an optimum solution.

The magnetic reflux classifier, which utilizes the combined effects of magnetic fields and a hindered settling classifier, is a new tool for determining the quantity and quality of middlings in fine-sized magnetite concentrates. The criteria for use included acceptability of results, flexibility of equipment, ease of application, and economics. A recent paper by Adams and vreeland30 describes dislocation density changes in zinc as a function of shear strain. Beginning in 1974, the Bureau of Mines, US Department of Interior, sponsored research and development efforts related to further development and use of continuous face haulage in underground coal mines (Cowan, 1975). The Department of Energy continued this effort as of Oct. 1977. This paper represents an update of an article previously published in Mining Engineering magazine (Mayercheck, 1979). The surface charge, electrokinetic potential and surface conductance were studied for silica, alumina and rutile as the functions of PH and concentration of 1-1 electrolyte solutions. The adsorption potentials of potential-determining and specifically adsorbed ions were calculated from isoelectric and zero charge points on the basis of Stern equation and thermodynamic description. From surface conductance and charge data the mean ionic mobilities in double layer were estimated. The results give some information about the real structure of oxide-electrolyte interface and gel-layer concept.

DRILLING mud can be an item of great expense on the Gulf Coast. In order to understand the nature of a drilling mud, it is desirable to know the composition and size of the mineral particles that are present, The supercentrifuge has been adapted to the fractionation of mud, and this paper discusses the calibration and methods of operation and control. An alignment chart has been prepared, which was found useful in this work. Typical data are included, showing the comparative reliability of the method.

No matter how perfectly sectioned or skilfully manufactured the rails used may have been, or with what care the road-bed may he maintained, legitimate results from these important factors cannot be secured unless proper attention is bestowed upon the joint-fastenings. In this country, splice-bars of various patterns furnish the practically universal joint. Other forms have been used, and are now being experimentally tested, but the typical American rail-joint consists of angle-plates or splice-bars. At the same time, it is true that scarcely a railroad engineer is satisfied with his joint. He may consider it the best of which he has knowledge, but at the same time he is well aware of many of its weak points.

Chip formation in rock under a line load and in front of a drag bit cutter is numerically investigated. Analysis is accomplished by a special purpose interactive graphics finite element code, SICRAP, written for the simulation of mixed mode crack propagation under 1inear elastic fracture mechanics assumptions. The first study provides some interesting qualitative results, and in the second study, correlation with experimental tests on chip formation by drag bit cutter in Berea sandstone is found to be very satisfactory. This indicates that elastic analysis, coupled with fracture mechanics, is capable of modeling rock cutting.
