A method has been developed for calculating the average pressure in a bounded reservoir. The reservoir is first divided into the individual drainage volumes of each well, by using the criterion that at steady state each individual drainage volume is proportional to a well's production rate. The average pressure in each drainage volume is then calculated by a method developed in the report. By volumetrically averaging these individual drainage volume pressures, the average pressure in the entire reservoir is obtained. To calculate the average pressure in each drainage volume, a correction is applied to the ordinary extrapolated pressure, i.e., the pressure obtained by extrapolating to infinite time the linear portion of the graph of closed-in pressure versus log[?t/(t + ?t)], where At is the closed-in time and t the production time. The correction, which is a function of the production time, is presented in graphical form for different shapes of the drainage area (horizontal cross section of the drainage volume). INTRODUCTION It is important to be able to find the volumetric average pressure in a reservoir so that the size of the reservoir may be determined from material balance calculations. It is also desirable to be able to find the approximate distribution of pressure within a reservoir for detection of fluid movement. 'The purpose of this paper is to present a method for calculating both the average reservoir pressure and the approximate distribution of pressure within a bounded reservoir — that is, a reservoir with no water drive. In reservoirs where the pressure builds up rapidly after wells are shut in, the determination of average pressure generally poses little problem, for one often need only average the final buildup pressures. It is when pressure buildup is slow that difficulties arise. For practical and economical reasons, the time allowable for closing in wells is limited. If at the maximum allowable closed-in time the pressure has not reached a con- stant value (and this is more often the case than is generally realized), calculation of average pressure presents difficulties. One method which has been used in the past for obtaining an "average" pressure involves the extrapolation to infinite closed-in time of curves of pressure as a function of closed-in time. Contour maps of these extrapolated pressures are used in arriving at an average pressure. In some cases wells are shut in for arbitrary Lengths of time, and contours of these arbitrary shut-in pressures are used for calculation. All these methods are somewhat arbitrary and suffer from lack of fundamental theoretical basis. For example, no precise meaning can be given either to the extrapolated or to the arbitrary shut-in pressure. Furthermore, there seems to be no reason why either set of pressures should be contourable. It was because of the vagueness of these old methods and their lack of a sound theoretical basis that, the present method for determining average reservoir pressure was developed. Some problems concomitant with commercial exploitalion of marble are presented as examples of interesting, useful and profitable fields for application of scientific knowledge. The marble industry is only one such field and is selected because its varying new aspects are familiar to the author. However, what is true for marble is equally so in principle for many industrial minerals. The problems of any stone industry are to maintain markets, create new outlets for stone already in demand, and develop varied uses for varieties that are not so popular. Here the geologist has a different role from most of his colleagues in metal mining. The producing branch may ask about the expectable variation in thickness or size of a deposit as development proceeds. The stock department may call for the available amount of a given type of stone before accepting a large order. The sales force requires data on the use for stone from certain parts of deposits in order to divert grades to the most suitable use. The service department wants defects rectified and the cause determined to avoid recurrence The mills want data on durability and cutting quality of abrasives. The geologist occupies no special department; he is on general call, as may be illustrated by a few types of problems that may be classified as: (1) dominantly geological in character, (2) dominantly chemical in character, (3) dominantly physical in character. Geological Problems The geological problems deal almost exclusively with the size of blocks. Size across the deposit is limited by thickness of individual beds. and along the strike by the space between crosscutting joints. Frequently the vertical depth of a block is reduced by exfoliation shells arising from spontaneous expansion. All these factors require consideration in developing a deposit to fill an order. Early in the present century, prospect-ing was active in the area of the present Miami district. There were plenty of blue and green copper outcroppings, but very little ore of a grade that would stand shipping costs had been uncovered. Late in the first decade of the century, tunnels were driven into the north and south slopes of the Inspiration ridge, and two of them exposed disseminated copper sulphide ore. This was the original discovery of such ore on the ground of what eventually became the Inspiration Division of the consolidated company. By 1910 exploration of the ground area was well along and by 1911 underground development had been started. In the next few years a large tonnage of disseminated copper ore had been proven— sufficient to justify the expenditure of several million dollars in mine development and for mine equipment plus large sums for treatment plants. The mine and treatment plants were placed in production July 1, 1915. To Jan. I, 1945, there had been produced from the mines of the Inspiration Consoli-dated Copper Co., more than 106,000,000 tons of ore. Nearly all of this tonnage had been recovered by block caving. GeologIcal and EconomIc FActors Block caving is a mining system based on the fact that if a mass of rock has a sufficient number of fractures and planes of weakness the mass will disintegrate if the support of an area of sufficient size is taken away—that is, "undercut." If the material that caves away from the bottom of a block is drawn off the spalling is progressive. There is a limit to the speed of this spalling or caving action, which varies with the structure of the rock being caved. If the rock is drawn at a rate faster than the caving rate, and if this drawing is continued too long, a void may be created that could make a very dangerous condition if the area should drop as a block and force the air below the uncaved rock out through the raises and drifts. This can be a very destructive force. On the other hand, if the broken material is not drawn fast enough the swell of the material in place to broken material would pack the mass until it was almost solid again and could not be drawn without much blasting, or perhaps even partially undercutting again. Geologically therefore it would seem that any rock with seams and fractures would cave; but for block caving there should be enough seams and fractures in a limited area so that such an area will cave and produce a product that can be drawn safely, rapidly enough and at a cost justified by the value of the product being drawn. At the Inspiration the disseminated ores occur in two formations, the Pinal schist and the Schultze granite. There is no material difference in the grade of the ore formed in the schist and in the granite. The chief copper minerals are chalcocite, malachite, azurite and chrysocolla. Other copper minerals occur in limited quantity.

ROTARY kiln operators will agree that some of the most severe conditions a refractory must stand occur in the hot zone of a kiln burning Portland cement, dead burn dolomite, magnesite, peri-clase, and similar materials. Frequently the operator is faced with factors beyond his control which drastically shorten the life of refractories. Shutdown due to mechanical failure can be serious if the period is of sufficiently long duration to cause the dropping of coating or the loosening of the lining. A change in slurry can affect the coating and cause ring buildup. A change in type of fuel and its effect upon the flame can cause a shift in location of the hottest zone. Weekend shutdowns or any other interruption can cause the operator trouble and may damage the refractories, since stopping and starting a rotary kiln is certainly more difficult than stopping and starting a motor. Some operators have tried to set an estimate of damage for each shutdown in equivalent days of running time. Conditions affecting the refractory may be roughly grouped in four classes: chemical attack, mechanical stress, thermal shock, and abrasion. Chemical Attack: The drive to obtain maximum production through a kiln demands maximum operating temperatures, temperatures which are limited more by the ringing up or melting of the clinker. This can cause interface temperatures at the junction of coating and refractory which require the use of a basic kiln block to withstand the chemical attack. Chemical changes take place within the refractory itself, especially in chemically bonded or unburned kiln blocks. These changes cause the formation of the ceramic or burned bond. Migrating liquids or fluxes from the kiln charge have an effect within the refractory and lead to mineral or glass formation. The alkalies, sodium and potassium, migrate into the refractory as silicates, chlorides, sulphates or other salts. They may move under capillary action or may be caused to move by volatilization with condensation in the cooler portion. Mechanical Stress: Concentrated stress may be caused by several factors or combinations thereof. I—The rings of refractories must be kept tight and rigid within the kiln, and this alone demands considerable force to hold the blocks in place. So that the force will not be concentrated, the blocks should fit the circle as perfectly as possible, with the faces in contact overall. 2—As the kiln is heated, thermal expansion takes place at the hot end of the kiln block. Since this disturbs the plane face it too can cause a concentrated stress at the two ends of the block, and shearing stress can be set up within the brick itself because of the difference in expansion between the two ends. 3—If a lining becomes loose and moves in the shell very severe stress can be set up, and as the kiln rotates this load changes and gives the effect of repeated loading. Permanent expansion of the refractory can also cause severe loading. 4—Not least important, flexing of the kiln is frequently the cause of concentrated stresses. Thermal Shock: Thermal shock, the result of heating and cooling too rapidly, occurs on starting and stopping or when a large patch of coating drops, exposing the bricks. Again, its destructive effect is often the result of phase change, liquid to solid or the reverse; dense refractories loaded with glass-forming impurities are particularly susceptible. Thermal shock is a. problem with refractories set in the wall or roof of a stationary furnace, and becomes even more serious in a rotary kiln, the tendency to spa11 being magnified with movement and concentration of stress. Uniform rate of feed and loading insures both better coating and a more uniform stress. Abrasion: If the refractories do not take a coating, abrasion can become a most destructive factor. Movement of the lining in shell or movement of loose blocks causes abrasion, which is also most destructive if the refractories do not take a coating. An analysis of the problem of basic lining for the hot zone reveals, therefore, a number of desirable characteristics: high refractoriness, basic chemical reaction, resistance to spalling, good strength at all stages, ability to take coating, true sizing, volume stability, and abrasion resistance. INTRODUCTION ONE of the most important problems facing the steel industry at the present time is that of maintaining at a minimum the sulphur content of many grades of steel where sulphur is known to have harmful effects on both quality and yield. The present outlook in this struggle to reduce the amount of sulphur in steel is rather gloomy since the sulphur content of the raw materials available in the United States is gradually rising, with little relief in sight. A flow sheet of sulphur in the steel process is shown in Fig I. The values used here were obtained by averaging coke oven and blast furnace data at No. 5 furnace in Cleveland and are considered typical for high top pressure practice. The sulphur evolved in the blast furnace top gas was obtained by difference and since the amount is relatively small, little significance should be attached to this particular value. From Fig I it is apparent, however, that coals used in the production of metallurgical coke represent by far the largest single source of sulphur in steelmaking. As an indication of the decrease in quality of these coals as regards sulphur content the weighed average annual sulphur analysis of the coals supplied to two different steel plants, since 1925, is plotted in Fig 2.1 The sharp rise since 1940 is strikingly apparent. Another indication of this trend is found in estimates of coking coal reserves. Thus in the case of Pittsburgh seam coals available in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties in Pa. as of Jan. 1937 only 25 pct of the coal reserves would contain less than 1.50 pct sulphur after washing.2,3 Many of these lower sulphur reserves have been seriously depleted in recent years because of accelerated war demands. Still another demonstration of the increasing sulphur content of coals on a country-wide basis is found in a report by the Bureau of Mines4 which shows a steady increase in the sulphur content of coke made in the United States, It should be noted that this increase continues in spite of the wider use of coal washing in recent years. Sulphur occurs in coal in three forms, pyritic (FeS2), organic sulphur, and a small amount of sulphate sulphur (CaSO4), The sulphur is subsequently found in the coke in combination with carbonaceous material of unknown composition and as calcium and iron sulphides: In considering the general problem of sulphur elimination, the Republic Steel Corp. was interested in determining which, if either, of the two major forms of sulphur in coal contributes the greater portion of sulphur to the coke, Since the ratio of pyritic to organic sulphur varies widely in different coals, it was thought that if it could be shown definitely that the major part of the sulphur occurring in coke originates from one of the two major forms of sulphur in the coal, it would then be possible to select with confidence coal which, although high in total sulphur, would yield coke of fairly low sulphur content, Using the new

Hard-metal inserts have received considerable attention in the mining industry recently for a variety of excavating and penetrating purposes. Their use in percussive drilling and in coal cutting machines is well known, but attempts to utilize them in cutting materials such as dimension stone have been discouraging because of excessive tool wear and failure. Particular attention is given to those properties of hard-metal inserts that affect their resistance to wear. A consideration of the actual wear mechanism shows the importance of correct mounting of the inserts and of the selection of suitably powered driving motor so as to achieve minimum tool wear and maximum tool life. Comparisons are made between the performances of types of hard-metal inserts, relating their inherent properties with results obtained in laboratory tests. As part of a broad program to improve the quarrying and processing of industrial minerals, The Pennsylvania State University has been investigating the machinability of slate under laboratory and field conditions. It should be emphasized that the results of the research presented in this paper are also applicable to other natural structural materials, and particularly to the more workable ones such as limestone and sandstone. Improvements which accrue in cutting and sawing should prove of benefit to all the dimension stone industry. Further, it may be pointed out that the results reported here are applicable to rotary drilling (with drag bits) as well as to cutting and sawing of rock. INVESTIGATIONS IN RELATED FIELDS The investigation was initiated with an extensive survey of available literature related to metal cutting and to rotary drilling. The following similar features between metal cutting and slate cutting became evident: 1) Hard-metal inserts are widely used as a cutting tool in both cases. 2) The forces acting on the tool may be resolved into normal and tangential components. 3) Rate of penetration and tool wear are important criteria in each case. On the other hand, important differences also exist: 1) Most metals, exhibit plastic behavior, while slate (and most rock) is a brittle material under normal conditions. 2) In metal cutting the component of force acting parallel to the surface of the workpiece is considerably greater than the force holding the tool against the workpiece. 111 slate cutting, this situation is reversed. Similarities between drag-bit rotary drilling and slate cutting are as follows: 1) In both casts, a tool, usually of the hard-metal insert type, is used to penetrate a brittle material. 2) The drilling forces and related variables, such as rotation speed, are similar. 3) Chip formation in each case is essentially the same. 4) The shape of the tool is similar in rotary drilling and slate cutting. Important differences are also apparent: 1) The objective of drilling is to produce a directed hole, while in cutting it is to form a kerf. In core drilling, however, a kerf is also produced. 2) The horizonta1 component of force in rotary drilling decreases from the center to the outside of the tool, whereas in slate cutting the component is almost uniformly distributed across the width of the tool. 3) The power absorbed in the drill rod is greater in rotary drilling. 4) The clogging action of chips, if excessive power is applied to the tool and if flushing is insufficient, is more serious in rotary drilling. Because of the striking similarities between metal cutting and slate cutting, and between rotary drilling and slate cutting, it was considered that the findings of investigators in those fields would serve as a guide for experimental studies of slate cutting. The following is thus devoted to a discussion of those aspects of metal cutting and rotary drilling pertinent to the present investigations.

The low -temperature tensile and creep behaviors of single crystals of copper were evaluated and analyzed in such a manner as to provide an estimate of the separate contributions of short-and long-range stress fields to strain-hardening. Furthermore, the average force-displacement diagram for thermally activated intep-section of two dislocations was estublished. This diagram plus a knowledge of the variation of dislocation spacing and the long-range back stresses with strain permits on accurate prediction of creep rates. The calculated activation energy for intersection under conditions of a constant strain rate increases linearly with the absolute tempevatus-e as required by theory. AN understanding of the detailed mechanisms for strain hardening constitutes one of the principal unsolved problems in dislocation theory. Two major models for strain hardening have been advanced in the past. The one that has received greatest attention assumes that strain hardening arises exclusively from long range interaction stresses between moving dislocations and piled-up arrays of blocked dislocations on the slip planes. This type of interaction was first announced by Taylor' who revealed that the back stress fields due to a simple uniform array of positive and negative dislocations entrapped in the deformed crystal would result in parabolic hardening. Shortly thereafter Andrade and Henderson" demonstrated that the strain hardening of fcc single crystals was not parabolic, as previously thought, and finally it was recognized that a typical stress-strain curve consisted of three successive stages of deformation, niz., the easy glide, Stage I, linear hardening, Stage 11, and the parabolic hardening, Stage 111, ranges. The objections to Taylor's somewhat na'ive model, which were presented so forcefully by cottrell; were largely removed by the more realistic details incorporated in Mott's analysis.5 But because Mott's theory for hardening via long range stress fields gave somewhat analogous results to that of Taylor's (inasmuch as it also predicted a parabolic rate of strain hardening whereas the observed rate of strain hardening in Stages I and I1 were linear), it was not widely accepted. Major consideration was therefore given to models, such as those which were advanced by Friedel and seegere that were formulated for the ad hoc purpose of yielding linear rates of strain hardening. The second major thought regarding strain hardening is based on the concept that it arises principally from short-range stress fields due to the interactions between intersecting dislocations. Cottrell and stokes7 showed, several years ago, that the constancy of the flow stress ratio at two temperatures regardless of the strain was inconsistent with the concept that strain hardening arose exclusively from long-range back stresses. The argument that strain hardening was primarily due to local interactions of intersecting dislocations was presented in considerable detail by asinski.' Extending Basinski's method of analysis of the intersection process, Mitra, Os-borne, and dorn recently demonstrated that indeed the strain hardening in aluminum single crystals arises principally from local effects coincident with intersection; however, these conclusions, too, must be modified, as will be shown later in this report. The present investigation, devoted principally to the low-temperature deformation of copper single crystals, was initiated in an attempt to ascertain whether or not the same conclusions arrived at for aluminum also apply to metals, such as copper, which have much wider stacking faults. It was soon observed that the strain hardening in copper could not be attributed exclusively to local effects between intersecting dislocations. Previously no analytical method for arriving at the possible simultaneous contributions of long-range stress fields and localized forces on intersecting dislocations was available; consequently, the separation of these two factors could not be readily accomplished. In the present report a method of estimating the separate contributions of each of these two factors to strain-hardening will be presented. The authors will show that both long-range stress fields of the type contemplated by Seeger and Friedel as well as short-range forces of the type considered by Basinski are responsible for strain hardening in fcc metals at low temperatures. This method of analysis also accounts for, in a satisfactory way, the effect of stress, temperature, and strain on the creep rate under constant stress. Furthermore, in the course of presenting their methods of analysis the authors will also reveal the rather complete agreement of their experimental data with the concepts of the theory for thermally activated intersection of dislocations. INTERSECTION MODEL As shown by seegerl0 the strain rate arising from thermally activated intersection of dislocations is given by

In the normal operation of a brass-rolling mill, sheet and strip has, for the most part, been finished in comparatively thin gauges, involving a substantial amount of cold-work and a considerable number of anneals. This condition has been disturbed by the preponderance of cartridge brass, which is not rolled to thin gauges, and particularly by brass for artillery cartridge cases, on which the mill may finish its work at a thickness between 0.400 and 0.900 in. Obviously, the amount of rolling and the number of anneals to which such a product can be subjected are small compared with strip that is carried to a thickness of a few hundredths of an inch. As a result, critical examination into the internal condition of metal has been made on an extensive scale at a stage of manufacture that would not, in normal times, have been chosen for complete inspection. Under these conditions, a type of defect has been recognized that is not seen at thinner gauges. It might be more accurate to call it the appearance of a defect, since it refers to an apparently laminated, discontinuous structure, which, in fact, does not exist as such, and disappears after suitable treatment. For this reason it has been called a phantom lamination, which the authors consider an appropriate term. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the phenomenon and the conditions of its occurrence and, at least tentatively, to discuss its nature and cause. Great numbers of phantoms may be found in 2:r brass, either hot-rolled or cold-rolled. They are also found in 70-30 brass, sometimes when hot-rolled and generally when cold-rolled. It is not believed that phantoms are confined to these alloys but this paper is limited to them for the purpose of description. Hot-rolled 2:1 Brass For illustration, therefore, a typical cake of hot-rolled 2:I brass has been chosen. This was rolled to a slab 36 in. thick, from a casting 5 in. thick by 24 in. wide by 18 in. high, which was believed to have been sound. After hot-rolling and cooling, the slab was sheared and a portion of such a shear cut is shown in Fig. I. It would be difficult to convince anyone viewing this specimen that the metal was not unsound. The impression would be confirmed by the appearance of a tensile break, as shown in Fig. 2. This is an ordinary tensile-test piece from metal just described. Although there was nothing in its tensile strength or elongation that suggested unsoundness, it appeared run through with pipes and laminations. To question the reality of such a condition would imply questioning the obvious. But, considering the history of the metal, it would be difficult to believe that it could be so bad as it appeared. It seemed reasonable, though, that if the defects were what they appeared to be, they could be traced back from the sheared or broken face.

When the nucleation of silicon on a sapphire substrate is accomplished by gradually decreasing the substrate temperature while subjecting it to a constant impingement rate of hydrogen and silicon tetrachloride, the resulting deposit is characterized by widely separated islands of silicon scattered over an "open sea" of sapphire. Analysis shows that nucleation takes place mainly on sites of large adsorption energy, about 85 kcal per mole, and small surface concentration, about 108 cm-2. Crystal growth proceeds rapidly on these nuclei and results in enough depletion of Sicl4 from the ambient gas to suppress further nucleation. The technological importance of single-crystal films on dielectric substrates has prompted considerable work on the deposition of silicon on sapphire. This paper is concerned with the deposition of silicon, by the reduction of silicon tetrachloride with hydrogen, onto heated sapphire substrates. The apparatus consisted of a temperature-controlled container for the silicon tetrachloride along with gas lines and flow meters necessary to convey a hydrogen-silicon tetrachloride mixture to a reaction chamber constructed of quartz tubing. Heat for the substrate was provided by means of an inductively heated graphite susceptor. The observations pertinent to the present discussion were made with an American Optical Co. high-temperature microscope which allowed us to make motion pictures of the deposition process at a magnification of approximately 50 times. Two main categories of experiments were carried out: one on determination of critical condensation temperatures and the other on the deposition of epitaxial silicon films on the sapphire substrates. Critical condensation temperatures were determined in the traditional way by raising the substrate temperature well above that at which condensation could be expected at the impingement rates being studied and then gradually lowering the temperature until the condensation of the first silicon was observed. This was done initially with ellipsometry-type detection but it was soon discovered that the deposits were occurring as widely separated islands and groups of islands scattered over an "open sea" of sapphire. We have called these archipelago formations. They were most easily detected by optical microscopy. Data gathered from experiments of this type have been collected in Table I. Motion pictures of the formation of archipelago patterns show that the nucleation period lasts about 10 sec if the substrate temperature and impingement rate are kept constant. Essentially all of the nuclei are formed in a few seconds and all subsequent silicon deposition merely adds to the size of the established nuclei. After an archipelago formation has matured at a given substrate temperature and impingement rate, it is very difficult to stimulate any further nucleation in the open space between islands. Lowering the substrate temperature will occasionally stimulate nucleation but increasing the impingement rate hardly ever produces any more new nuclei. It should also be emphasized that the nucleation rates appear to be very small, about 104 cm-2 sec-1. They will receive special attention in the analysis section. Another series of experiments was performed employing a systematic variation of substrate temperatures and impingement rates approximating those expected to produce epitaxy. Sapphire substrates with surfaces normal to the 2233 direction were used. In contrast to the procedure that produces archipelago patterns, these films were deposited by raising the substrate temperature to a desired value at which time the silicon tetrachloride and hydrogen flow was begun. Of course, these depositions produced mainly films that were continuous. After removal from the deposition chamber, the substrate and silicon film were examined microscopically to determine the nature of the deposit and by X-ray diffraction to determine the extent to which a single-crystal film had been achieved. Results of these experiments are summarized in Table 11. Of interest for the present analysis is the fact that epitaxy appears to be confined to a fairly narrow temperature range between about 1050" and 1150°C. By comparing two longwall operations, one begun in 1956 and the other in 1960, the author is able to demonstrate the increases in production and performance made possible by longwall mining. These achievements have been brought about by continuous development of longwall mining equipment and associated roof supports. Because of this progress, longwall mining is able to provide, under proper conditions, high production per man-shift, remarkable cost savings, dependable roof control, safe working conditions and truly continuous production. It may seem odd that the title of this paper is not simply "Longwall Mining" but instead "Progress in Longwall Mining." However, the word "Progress" definitely has its place in longwall mining. If it had not been for progress in the development of longwall mining equipment and roof supports, the longwall mining method would not be able to compete in production and performance with modem coal mining machines. The longwall mining method was practiced at the beginning of the century and there were several successful operations in coal fields in Illinois. In those early days of longwall mining, the coal was undercut by hand 2 to 2.5 ft at the bottom of the seam and packwalls were built in the gob to support the roof. The roof eventually subsided and the weight of the subsiding roof was used to ride the face and break the undercut coal. Utilizing natural weight to soften the coal face is still practiced in modern longwall mining; however, the packwalling method has been replaced by the caving method and the roof is now supported by yielding steel roof supports and forepoling steel headers. The purpose of these yielding-type roof supports is to provide a safe working area for the crew along the entire longwall face, to permit continuous mechanical mining across the prop free face, and to provide a strong resistance for the roof by forming an even breaking line at the gob for the roof to cave. Roof supports and associated forepoling headers should be kept as close as possible to the face in order to prevent a caving between face and supports, especially under friable roof. This means that the coal should be extracted in small slices, allowing only a narrow roof area to be exposed and unsupported. The coal planer with its relatively high cutting velocity of 75 ft per min provides such an extraction of coal and has proved its high performance under difficult mining conditions. Since 1951, several longwall faces in southem West Virginia and Pennsylvania which have been equipped with the coal planer and friction-type manual roof supports have been successfully operated. Compared to today's longwall mining, these longwall faces required such a large crew, primarily to handle the roof supports, that the actual high production per shift was charged with too high a labor cost, thereby decreasing the tons per man. Yet, even then the longwall faces outperformed the conventional mining system under the same conditions. In order to demonstrate the progress that has been made in the development of longwall mining, a comparison will be made between a longwall face in Arkansas which was installed in 1956 and a modemized longwall face started in 1960 in southern West Virginia. LONGWALL MINING IN 1956 The 320-ft longwall face was developed in a 32-in. thick coal seam near Greenwood, Ark. The method of mining the 320-ft coal block was the advancing system in which three entries on either side of the face were driven ahead of the advancing longwall face. The face was equipped with a coal planer and a Panzer conveyor; timbering was done with wooden timbers and cribs. The roof supports were set without any pattern. The crew to operate the planer and to handle the roof supports (timbers and cribs) consisted of 15 men per shift. During a period of approximately eight monthsof single shift operating time, the average tonnage produced in this relatively low seam amounted to about 263 tons of clean coal per shift. To show the development in the coal plow from then until now, it should be pointed out that the standard plow was used in this operation. The plow was equipped with rigid bottom bits which could not be adjusted if the plow started to climb, thereby leaving bottom coal to be recovered by pick hammers end causing delays in production. Internal friction measurements were used to determine the effect of manganese on the solubility and precipitation kinetics of nitrogen. Manganese, in concentrations up to 0.75 pct, has little effect on the solubility at temperatures above 250°C. On the other hand, at Concentrations as low as 0.15 pct, manganese inhibits the formation of iron nitrides, especially Fe4N, even though it may not form a precipitnte itself. The precipitation and solubility of carbides and nitrides have been extensively investigated in the pure Fe-C and Fe-N systems.1-3 In recent years, some effort has been ispent in studying the influence of substitutional alloying elements on the behavior of carbon and nitrogen in ferrite.4 -7 In particular Fast, Dijkstra, and Sladek have investigated the effect of 0.5 pct Mn on the internal friction and hardness during the quench aging of Fe-Mn-N alloys.', ' They found that at low temperatures (below 200°C) the presence of 0.5 pct Mn greatly retarded quench aging. For example, after 66 hr at 200°C very little precipitation had taken place in the iron alloyed with manganese, whereas precipitation was complete after a few minutes in a pure Fe-N alloy. The effect of varying the manganese content and the details of the precipitation process were not mentioned in these papers. Fast' postulated that manganese causes a local lowering of the free energy of the lattice with a resulting segregation of nitrogen atoms to these low energy sites. The segregated nitrogen atoms are bound so tightly to the manganese atoms that they cannot form a precipitate. The internal friction measurements of Dijkstra and Sladek tended to confirm the concept of segregation of nitrogen around manganese atoms, and the increase in free energy on transferring a mole of nitrogen atoms from a segregated to a "normal" lattice site was computed to be - 2800 cal. Dijkstra and Sladek9 distinguished between two types of precipitates: ortho, a nitride of appreciably different manganese content than that of the matrix, and para, a nitride with a manganese content essentially that of the matrix. With each type of precipitate a solubility, again designated ortho or para, can be associated. Since the internal friction maximum in alloys which were aged several hours at 600" C dropped almost to zero, Dijkstra and Sladek9 concluded that the ortho solubility must be very low. The effect of temperature on the ortho and para solubilities has no1: been investigated. There are obviously several gaps in our knowledge concerning the influence of manganese on the behavior of nitrogen in a-iron. It was the purpose of the experiments described in this paper to determine the following: 1) The ortho and para solubilities of nitrogen as a function of temperature. 2) The details of the precipitation process at elevated temperatures. 3) The effect of varying the manganese concentration on the above phenomena. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Internal friction is conveniently employed in studying the precipitation of nitrides and/or carbides from a -iron because it is one of the few parameters, perhaps the only one, which is not affected by the presence of the precipitate itself. For this reason, internal friction techniques were heavily relied upon in the present experiment. A) Preparat of -. All specimens were prepared from electrolytic iron and electrolytic manganese. Alloys containing 0.15, 0.33, 0.65, and 0.75 wt pct Mn were vacuum melted and cast into 25 lb ingots. After being hot rolled to 3/4 in. bars, the ingots were swaged and drawn to 0.030 in. wires. The wires wen? decarburized and denitrided by annealing at 750° C for 17 hr in flowing hydrogen saturated with warer vapor. To obtain a medium grain size, - 0.1 mm, the wires were then heated to 945oC, allowed to soak for 1 hr, furnace cooled to 750°C, and water quenched. Subsequent internal friction measurements showed that this procedure reduced the nitrogen and carbon concentrations of the alloys to less than 0.001 wt pct. The wires were nitrided by sealing them in pyrex capsules containing anhydrous ammonia and annealing them for 24 hr at 580°C, the nitrogen being retained in solid solution by quenching the capsule into water. Immediately after quenching, the wires were stored in liquid nitrogen to prevent any precipitation of nitrides. By varying the pressure of ammonia in the capsule, it was possible to produce any desired nitrogen concentration. B) Internal Friction. WHETHER the United States and its allies can W meet the challenge of a war brought by the Communists will depend largely on who wins the battle of steel production. At the present stage of the world situation, the United States and the other members of the Western family of nations have the lead on iron curtain countries. But we have no sure way of knowing what is happening at Magnetogorsk and other Russian iron and steel producing centers. We must also face the possibility that we may have to meet the challenge alone. The fortunes of war and world politics can strip us of friends and co-fighters quickly. The destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are indicative of what the world can expect if war-madness ever grasps the earth again. Our domestic supply of high grade open-pit and underground iron ore is dwindling because of the drain of three wars and higher than ever civilian consumption. The production of iron ore and its eventual use in blast furnaces are the critical problems of an armed democracy today. The world crisis has led to efforts towards beneficiation for increasing ore supplies. The huge reserves represented by the magnetic taconites at the eastern end of the Mesabi, once in production, should provide us with a substantial portion of our native ore for many years. The estimated 10 to 20 million tons of concentrates annually can be increased in an emergency. If we had a certainty of peace for the next 50 to 100 years, the situation would be a stable, hopeful one, aided by importations of high grade ore from sources such as Canada and Venezuela. The hard truth is that we have little surety of peace tomorrow morning. Let us assume 'the U. S. could build sufficient processing plants for increasing production of magnetic taconites under the pressure of national emergency. We must also recognize the power of atomic warfare to contaminate an area as large as the Eastern Mesabi. Thus, it becomes imperative to seek some means of protecting our ability to produce the steel we may one day need to survive. The nonmagnetic taconites, completely dwarfing the magnetic taconites areawise as well as tonnage-wise, might provide us with this insurance. Present indications are that they will be considerably more expensive to treat, but in a desperate situation we might be very grateful for ores yielding 40 to 50 pct Fe recoveries at grades of 53 to 58 pct Fe carrying low phosphorus. The University of Wisconsin, because of the difficult iron ore situation in the state, has been working on the nonmagnetic taconite problem for the past three years in the hope of making a contribution toward its eventual solution. In Wisconsin, the Western Gogebic Range has been the state's most effective iron producing area. Today however, only two mines are in operation, both underground and approaching depths of more than 3000 ft. The range, however, does have a large supply of nonmagnetic taconites and presents a promising field for study. While the Gogebic offers one large source of nonmagnetic taconites, Michigan and Minnesota have even greater supplies of such material. Alabama, the northeastern states and the West all have low grade iron ore sources which might be utilized under extreme conditions. The Gogebic Range located in northeastern Wisconsin and northwestern Michigan has a total length of about 70 miles, about 45 of which are in Wisconsin. The iron formation averages 500 to 600 ft in width, dips 70' to the north and strikes at approximately N 63° E. The formation is sedimentary and consists of six distinct members characterized by alternating divisions of ferruginous chert and ferruginous slate. The footwall is generally quartzitic and the hanging wall of a sideritic slatey character. The iron minerals are mainly hematites with some magnetites, goethites, limonites and small amounts of siderite. In the area studied, very small amounts of iron silicates were observed. The magnetites occurred mostly in the Anvil-Pabst and Pence members, mixed with hematites and representing roughly about 10 to 20 pct of the total iron in the formation, thereby characterizing it as nonmagnetic. The gangue is of various forms of silica such as chert, opal and flint. Complete liberation of iron and gangue minerals is rare. There is always some iron present in the chert ranging from jasper-like solutions to fairly coarse iron oxide specks. Likewise, one always finds finely dispersed silica within the iron minerals. In late 1943 the Bureau of Mines carried out a trenching and sampling program in the two mile stretch between Iron Belt and Pence in Iron County, Wis. Preliminary work was based on samples from one of the four trenches cut by the Bureau of Mines. More detailed work following the preliminary analysis was then undertaken on samples composited from all the trenches, thereby giving a wider and more representative coverage of the area. A simple method has been developed with which flowing bottom-hole pressure data from two-rate flow tests in oil or gas wells can be analyzed to estimate the formation permeability, skin factor and average reservoir pressure. The required pressure data are obtained by observation of the transient bottom-hole pressure behavior after the stabilized producing rate of the well is changed to another, higher or lower, rate. The new method yields the same information as a conventional pressure buildup analysis, but eliminates the need for closing in the well. The analysis of a two-rate flow test is of the same degree of difficulty and requires about the same engineering time for application as a conventional pressure buildup analysrs. The extended closed-in periods experienced with conventional buildups because of long, low-rate afterproduc-tion periods are eliminated by fIow tests. Other anomalous pressure buildup effects, such as "humping" due to weli-bore phase segregation, can be successfully eliminated with the new method. Generally, flow tests of about 24 hours' duration run with conventional pressure measurement equipment are sufficient for interpretation purposes. Field testing of the two-rate flow test method has established that it is a reliable and economical method which can be used in many instances to complement or even replace conventional pressure buildup methods. INTRODUCTION The principal method for estimating formation permeability and well damage, or skin factor, in a producing oil or gas well is the analysis of shut-in bottom-hole pressure buildup data.' This familiar method has been used quite successfully by reservoir engineers for many years. It is based on the solution of the radial flow equation for constant rate conditions, and requires that the well be closed in for a sufficient period of time to obtain a clearly defined linear portion on the plot of observed t + ?t bottomhole pressure vs log t + ?/?t(where At is shut-in A? time, and t is producing time to the instant of shut-in). From the slope of the plot and other normally obtainable data, the permeability, skin factor, and reservoir pressure at infinite shut-in time (if the reservoir were infinite) can be estimated. Over the years several drawbacks have become apparent in the use of conventional shut-in pressure buildups for determining permeability and skin factor. The conventional pressure buildup interpretation theory assumes that a well is closed in at the sand face and that no production into the well occurs after shut-in. In practice, of course, the well is closed in at the surface, and inflow into the well continues until the well fills sufficiently to transmit the effect of closing in to the formation. This adjustment period is commonly referred to as the "after-production" portion of the pressure buildup. In the tight reservoirs, long, low-rate after-production periods frequently occur, and the well must be shut in for several days or, in some instances, even weeks to obtain an interpretable buildup curve.' Obviously, such long shut-in times can cause loss in current income, both from reduced oil production and from the fact that personnel and pressure measurement equipment are occupied with a single well for too long a time. In other cases, even long shut-in periods do not seem to be of much aid in obtaining an interpretable buildup." If there is considerable phase redistribution (liquid fallout or bubble rise) after a well is shut in, then curves with no interpretable portion are often obtained during the buildup. In addition to instances in which wellbore effects cause trouble, there are also cases in which the major objection to use of the closed-in pressure buildup is simply the fact that the well must be shut in. When there is no proration and when the well has limited producing capacity. closing in the well means loss of income. From the foregoing discussion it is apparent that it ib desirable to have an alternative method of obtaining the same information as that derived from a conventional buildup without the need of closing in the well. One possible solution which has been offered for this problem is the use of a bottom-hole shut-in tool' which isolates the major portion of the flow string from the formation face during the buildup. In this paper an alternative method which is frequently successful in avoiding wellbore effects and which does not require the use of special equipment is presented. A new, simple method has been developed with which the flowing bottom-hole pressure data from flow tests in oil or gas wells can be used to estimate permeability, skin factor and the average reservoir pressure. The required pressure data are obtained by observation of the transient bottom-hole pressure behavior after the stabilized production rate of the well is changed to another, higher or lower rate. The need for closing in the well is eliminated, and pressure measurement periods of only 18 to 24 hours arc usually sufficient, even in tight reservoirs. Thus, the new

In view of the increasingly widespread deterioration of concrete structures as the result of the interaction of the alkalies sodium and potassium released by hydration of portland cement and susceptible rocks and minerals in aggregates, it is believed that a paper summarizing the geographic distribution of these aggregates will be of interest to producers and users of concrete, concrete products, and concrete-making materials. THIS paper reviews the problem of alkali-aggre-gate reaction in concrete and describes the geologic and geographic occurrence and distribution of alkali-reactive sand and gravel in western United States. It includes no discussion of crushed stone or synthetic aggregates. Most deposits of sand and gravel are accumulations of particles of rocks and minerals from a variety of sources, and it is not unusual for at least one or two varieties of the rocks to contain some form of reactive material. Examination by petro-graphic methods of many sands and gravels, as well as manufactured aggregates, has shown that a comparatively high proportion of the deposits does contain, in greater or lesser degree, rocks and minerals known to be deleteriously reactive with the alkalies of cement. Fortunately the amount of reactive materials is commonly less than that necessary to cause deleterious effects in concrete. As investigation of unsound concrete structures progresses, it becomes evident that the alkali-aggre-gate reaction is even more widespread than supposed, Figs. 1 and 2. Even though some parts of the country appear at present to be immune, further investigations will probably show that the effects of alkali-aggregate reaction can be seen in many structures in these areas, although only on a small scale in most of them. Many concrete structures will, of course, have lived their useful life before disintegration from this cause is serious, and in others the alkali-aggregate reaction may never become significant even though the microscopic evidence of reaction is present. The alkali-aggregate reaction first was reported to be a cause of deterioration of concrete in 1940 when Stanton1 described expansion of concrete pavements in California. Similar expansion and deterioration of concrete was recognized during succeeding years in concrete structures located in many parts of the country, but particularly in the western states. A number of concrete laboratories2 became interested in the problem. It was soon determined that only certain combinations of aggregate and cement caused the alkali-aggregate reaction to take place, and moreover that the reaction progresses only in the presence of water. Further research proved that cements containing more than 0.60 pct total alkalies (pct Na,O + 0.658 x pct K2O), when used with aggregates containing appreciable amounts of reactive ingredients, caused the reaction to take place, usually with subsequent deterioration of the concrete. During the last few years this limitation has been adhered to in both government and private construction as the maximum allowable alkali content of cement to be used with aggregates of known alkali reactivity. Because of this limitation, it appears that deleterious reaction either has been reduced or eliminated in many recently built structures in which it probably would otherwise have occurred. Recent tests have shown that the degree of expansion obtained with any particular cement-aggre-gate combination depends not only on the alkali content of the cement but also upon the relation of this alkali content to the amount and degree of reactivity of reactive constituents in the aggregate.' In laboratory mortar bars, opal and cements with alkali content of as low as 0.2 pct (as equivalent of Na2O) have produced deleterious expansion as the result of alkali-aggregate reaction. These experiments demonstrate that aggregates containing even 0.1 pct of opal are deleteriously reactive. It was soon determined that alkali-silica gels were formed by the interaction of the alkalies of the cement and the reactive aggregate, Figs. 3 and 4. Osmotic or swelling pressures produced by the continued hydration of these gels cause expansion of the concrete with resulting cracking, warping, and dislocation. Evidence of the alkali-aggregate reaction can be seen by a petrographic study of the deteriorated concrete. Among the first structures studied by this method was Parker Dam on the Colorado River, California-Arizona. In the concrete from this dam pebbles of rhyolite, andesite, siliceous limestone, and chalcedonic chert were found to be reactive.

COAL mining technique progressed slowly until the advent of mechanized mining. The cutting machine was a forward step, but had only a limited effect upon improving the percentage of coal recovery. Previously, the physical fitness of the loaders and the total output of the miners fixed mine production. The miner was an independent contractor and supervision over his working place was superficial. Rising costs and the inroads of substitute fuels demanded increased output per man to lower the unit production cost. Therefore, the amount of coal loaded mechanically in underground bituminous mines has risen from 0.3 per-cent in 1923 to 7.4 in 1929, to 20.2 in 1937, and to 48.9 percent in 1943. When loading devices were introduced it became necessary to adapt them to existing systems of mining, or to alter the mining system to fit the machine. An increased amount of supervision was required as output depended upon proper operation of the machine rather than on the physical fitness of the individual.

The kinetics of thickening and of lengthening of ?' plates in an Al-3.93 pct Cu alloy in the temperature range 203" to 300" C were determined by means of transmission electron microscopy. The rate of thickening was found to be less than that allowed by volume diffusion control at all temperatures, by amounts which increased with decreasing temperature, in agreement with the predictions of a general theory of precipitate morphology.1 Thickening was treated on the basis of the ledge mechanism. Ledges were deduced to spread across the broad faces of ?' plates at volume dzjrfusion-controlled rates, as anticipated from the disordered structure of their edges. Lengthening of 8' plates, on the other hand, took Place more rapidly than allowed by volume dzjrfusion. This occurred despite clear morPhological evidence of a bmrier to growth at the edges of these plates. It was concluded that the misfit dislocation structure comprising the barrier requires that lengthening take place by a jog mechanism. The tnisfit dislocations, however, also serve as diffusion short circuits, and allow high overall lengthening rates to be achieved. In Part I' it was shown that, within the range of aging temperatures and times studied, the broad faces of 8' plates formed in Al-4 pct Cu are fully coherent with the a, matrix. Virtually .all of the dislocations present in these faces were found to have developed as a result of plastic deformation in the a phase. Such dislocations are thus "intruders", rather than the more usual misfit-compensating variety. The edges of 8' plates were confirmed, by extension of the earlier studies of Mat-suura and Koda,3 to be made up of edge-type misfit dislocations, in sessile orientation with respect to lengthening of the plates. These interfacial structures should cause 8' plates to thicken and to lengthen at rates less than those allowed under the condition of volume diffusion control, such as would be expected if the interphase boundaries had disordered structures.' The narrow width of 8' plates, the reproducible crystallography of their broad faces, and the appearance of these plates in cross section as octagons rather than as circular discs2 provide qualitative support for these deductions. The present study of the rate of thickening and the rate of lengthening of 8' plates was undertaken in order to examine them on a quantitative basis. I) THICKENING KINETICS OF THE BROAD FACES OF?' PLATES A) Literature Review. The measurements now available on the thickening kinetics of single-phase precipitate plates consist of one plot of the thickening of a proeutectoid ferrite plate in an Fe-C alloy,' showing (as predicted) thickening rates less than those allowed by volume diffusion control. B) Experimental Procedure. Details of the preparation of the 4-3.93 pct Cu alloy used in this study have been previously reported.4 As in Part 1,' transmission electron microscopy was the observational tool employed. A general description of the apparatus and procedures of the electron microscopy studies is given in Section I of Part I. In thin foils, 0' plates tend to form at and parallel to the foil surface.' A direct investigation of the thickening process by means of hot-stage transmission electron microscopy was therefore not feasible. It was thus necessary to use the conventional method of aging individual bulk specimens for a wide range of different times at the various temperatures studied. In each specimen, the thicknesses of a number of plates were measured. Since thin foils prepared from "bulk-aged" material contain a large proportion of grains with orientations near (001) , it was relatively easy to find, near the edges of the foils, the characteristic multifold patterns of intersecting extinction contours which indicate regions where the foil is exactly at an (001) orientation. The thicknesses of large numbers of plates were measured along the (200) branches of the "stars" so that the 8' plates were precisely parallel to the optical axis of the microscope. Wherever possible, intersecting extinction contours were adjusted with the parameter s > 0 to improve the visibility of the plates in bright-field illumination. These precautions, in combination with taking the measurements at the thinnest parts of the foils, minimized the errors in the measurement of the thickness of the plates resulting from inexact parallelism to the electron beam. Since the plates were very thin, it was not easy to measure their thickness on the photographs. The techniques of enlargement and of microdensitometry were employed to minimize errors from this part of the measurement. A further source of possible error, that the plates can appear thicker because of contrast associated with mismatch normal to the plane of the plate, was also considered. The images of the plates were usually thinner than those of dislocations, however, and no anomalous changes in apparent plate thickness were observed when regions of foil containing plates were tilted through various diffracting conditions. Any error from this cause must therefore be small. Other sources contributing errors were: a) the microdensitometer traces per se and the subjective estimates of their peak limits, and b) slight fluctuations in magnification associated with small changes in the current of the objective lens of the electron microscope. The overall error probably amounted to no more than 5 to 10 pct. In order to obtain readily interpretable data on thickening kinetics, it is essential that the diffusion fields of adjacent ?' plates not be allowed to overlap.
