The South American porphyry copper province includes most of the Andean orogen, excepting the tin province of Bolivia. Porphyry coppers have not been commonly found within the tin belt, though copper-tin deposits in San Rafael, Peru and copper-tungsten deposits in Llamuco, Chile, are known. James" shows the depth to the Moho to appreciably thicken where the tin belt exists, but disclaims any genetic significance from this coincidence. Table I gives some of the most important porphyry copper deposits explored to date, but does not include Antaminas, Peru, nor a number of other large skarn deposits associated with intrusions. V. D. Perry* points out that porphyry copper mineralization does occur to some extent in the intrusion associated with many of these skarn deposits. Also not included are the suspected possible porphyry type occurrences, such as, for example, quartz-sericitically altered lower levels of the Casapalca mine, Peru. Many deposits not well enough documented to list in a summary paper are also excluded. Should anyone care to tabulate all other large copper de- posits in South America, they could demonstrate that a tremendous potential awaits the proper political and economic climate in the future.

The mining district and the town of Tombstone are situated in Cochise County, Arizona Territory, at the northwest end of the Mule Pass range of mountains, in longitude 110°, and latitude about 31 40' N,, upon the right bank of the San Pedro River, from which the town is distant 9 miles east.. It is also 24 miles south of Benson station on the Southern Pacific Railroad of Arizona, and about 40 miles north of the Mexican line. Its altitude above the sen is 4600 feet. The Dragoon Mountains rise across a valley to the northeast, and the Huachuca Range similarly upon the southwest. The country is open, without timber, and the surface, where the mines are opened, is in general gently rolling, and accessible to wagons by. natural roads. The first locations were made in the pear 1878 by the Scheffelin brothers and Richard Gird, the latter being well known among the pioneers of Arizona as a surveyor and miner, who contributed largely to our knowledge of the geography of the Territory in early days,

A method is presented that provides a mathematical description of capillary pressure curves and, probably, of differences in pore geometry of samples. The technique is based on the observation that the location and shape of a capillary pressure curve reflect characteristics of the pore structure of the sample. INTRODUCTION It has been noted1-5 that the observed differences in shape and location of capillary pressure curves reflect some basic properties regarding the pore geometry of the samples. For example, according to basic concepts of capillarity, the following statements can be made regarding the location and shape of a capillary pressure curve.* The location of the curve with respect to the (Vb)pc and PC axes is a measure of the interconnected pore volume and of the cross-sectional area of the pore first entered by mercury, respectively. The shape of the curve depends on the interconnection of the pores and the sorting of the pore sizes. It has been the object of this study to use this information as a starting point in an attempt to find a unique mathematical description of the PC — (Vv)p, relations of different samples. It may be expected that parameters in such a relation can then be used to describe differences in pore geometry of these samples. For a practical description of the PC — (Vb)p, relation, however, it appears desirable to describe each curve (i.e., each sample) by a limited number of parameters so that the curves taken from all samples form a family, each member of which is uniquely determined by one single combination of values of all parameters.

The "semi-pellet" sintering method developed and currently being used at the Fuji Iron & Steel's Hirohata Works is discusssd. It is shown that the method makes fine-sized material easily sinterable and increases sinter production. The operation can be incorporated readily into conventional sintering plants. Sintering plant raw materials currently being used in the Hirohata Works consist of 40 pct pyrite cinder, 40 pct fines resulting from crushing and screening of imported ores, and 20 pct others, such as mill scale and iron sands. Pyrite cinder, a major component in the sinter feed, has been getting finer since 1952, due to the increased grinding required for the improvement of the results in the iron sulfide flotation and to the adoption of FluoSolid roasters in sul-furic acid plants; some fines pass 100-mesh sieve almost completely. Increased use of the fine-sized pyrite cinders in the sinter raw mix resulted in such difficulties as decreased bed permeability, uneven firing conditions, and low yield. In an attempt to study the cause and to find a remedy for this problem, a series of experiments were made, using an 80-kg experimental sintering pan. As a result it was established that, by rolling the fine-sized pyrite cinders into small balls of 10 to 3 mm diam (hereafter called semi-pellets) and mixing them into the sinter raw mix, the bed permeability was improved, the sintering time shortened, and the yield and production rate increased. It is proposed that this new method be called the semi-pellet sintem'ng. In recent years the pelletizing process has taken the spotlight in the agglomeration field for treating fine-sized ores here in Japan as well as in the U.S. and Europe. This process produces pellets suitable for the blast furnace charge as such, and consists of three major operations: fine grinding, balling, and firing. With regard to the firing technique, some problems still appear unsolved. In the semi-pellet sintering, however, several ad- vantages can be claimed: the balling operation is relatively simple because only small-sized balls are shown to be acceptable and the operation can be readily incorporated into the conventional sintering plant, since only balling, not grinding or firing, equipment is needed. Basic test work on the process was initiated in 1954 and favorable results were obtained. Accordingly a pilot plant was built in 1955 and the test work was continued. The semi-pellets thus prepared in the pilot plant were tested further by USing them in the actual sintering pan and their beneficial effects ascertained. In late 1956 a drum-type balling machine (2.4X4 m) was installed and it went into operation in April 1957 in conjunction with the Greenawalt sintering plant (8 pans having dimensions of 7.2 m in length, 3 m in width, and 0.3 m in depth). In October 1958 a cone-type pelletizer, with a 2.2 m diam, and later a disk-type pelletizer were further added in the plant. In the DL sintering plant (2000 tpd), newly built in July, 1960, four disk-type pelletizers (3.2 m diam, 10 tph capacity) were installed. By mixing the semi-pellets thus prepared with the feed, the sintering operation was found to be greatly improved. The results of the basic test work, and the equipment and operation of the semi-pellet sintering operation at the Hirohata Works will be described. ON THE SINTERING CHARACTERISTICS OF FINE SIZED PYRITE CINDERS To ascertain the effect of addition of fine-sized pyrite cinders on the sintering characteristics, a series of measurements on bed permeability was carried out by varying the size distribution of pyrite cinders. The composition of the raw mix used in the tests was fixed at 50 pct pyrite cinder, 20 pct Larap magnetite fines, 30 pct sinter return, and 5 pct coke; only the size distribution of the pyrite cinder was varied. DIAMOND drill research work was initiated at the School of Mines, University of Minnesota, in late 1949. The Drilling Symposium held in Duluth that spring highlighted the problem of high cost and core recovery and the need for controlled testing. An advisory committee made up of informed representatives of both mining companies and drilling companies was formed to suggest and advise on a program of drill research. A Hy-Mac hydraulic drill unit, see Fig. 1, especially designed for experimental testing, was obtained for this work by the School of Mines through the courtesy of the Carboloy Co. It is an extremely flexible unit, capable of exerting a forward thrust of about 1750 lb and turning at speeds from 650 to 2200 rpm. An autobiography, the story of a Hoosier boy who fought his way to manhood and power through early misfortune and poverty, from street urchin and newsboy, to editor and author; from lumberjack and dock walloper to statesman and Governor of Michigan. The reader has the measure of the man in the first chapter, a dramatic recital of how the fighting boy editor cleaned up a lawless mining camp of 40 years ago. The thread of the narrative is the author's life-long devotion to outdoor living, ex-ploration and travel. Residing in Sault de Sainte Marie, Mich., in the heart of the Lake Superior country, he took his delight and, incidentally, found his fortune in prospecting the north woods for iron ore; eventually, extending his travels to the continents and many of the islands of the world, he discovered what, he believes-to be a great iron range in Madagascar. In this book there is plenty of anecdote, a great deal of wholesome social and po¬litical philosophy and some interesting sidelights on the characters of some of the author's prominent contemporaries in the political life of Michigan. The style is direct and animated, flavored and illuminated with the vernacular of Hoosierdom and the woods country of the North. The author levies on the vocabulary of the sciences and the classics for many a noun and adjective and, with Rooseveltian license, now and then coins a word. The reader's interest will be gripped from cover to cover, albeit he may occasionally need a dictionary. R. C. A.

BEFORE me is a colored mining-claim map of the productive portion of the Robinson Mining district-sometimes called the Ruth-Kimberly area-that lies a few miles west of Ely, Nevada. It covers an area of 20 sq mi and at the end of 1954 had produced just under 2,000,000 tons of copper and about 2,000,000 oz of gold as a by-product. The three principal colors on the map and the meaning of each are: Red -Property of the Nevada Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation, formerly known as the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company. Yellow -Property of the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation. Green --Consolidated Coppermines property under lease to Nevada Mines. The striking feature of the map is the crazy-quilt intermingling of the colors and the tendency of property lines to intersect ore bodies. For example, the westerly one-fourth of Nevada Mines' Copper Flat pit, source of most of the ore,up to date, is in Coppermines property. Nearly half of Nevada Mines' Veteran pit is on leased claims; and Nevada's new Deep Ruth shaft is on a right of way on ground originally owned by Coppermines. On the other hand, the original Ruth underground mine and the new Kimbley pit are on Nevada Mines property; and the Morris and Brooks opencut mines, the most important of Cop-

Streams and rivers are the principal channels into which the weathering products of rocks and their contained ores are funneled. The inorganic load of a stream system is a crude sample of all the earth materials in the drainage basin of the stream, and the heavy mineral assemblage of sediments is one of the oldest and most successful guides to certain kinds of bedrock ore in unexplored terrain. Early application of this method was made possible by the ease of separation and identification of heavy minerals in the field with the simplest equipment. Water analysis for traces of base metals became a practical possibility about eight years ago with the development of rapid chemical tests that could be carried out at the field site. Since that time the water method has been widely used in mineral reconnaissance, and a substantial number of discoveries have been reported. Here again, the techniques developed for this work were relatively simple and could be performed easily at the field site.

In situ solution mining of uranium has environmental advantages over conventional mining. The leaching of uranium, however, alters the ground-water quality in the aquifer where the mining occurs. Currently, regulations require that the ground water be restored to approximately its original condition. This paper, a summary of a study funded by the Bureau of Mines, reviews the state of the art in restoring ground-water quality after in situ uranium leaching. Current restoration practices discussed include disposal of liquid wastes in deep disposal wells and evaporation ponds, producing from all wells during restoration, and recirculating water purified in surface plants. Methods for predicting the effectiveness and cost of current techniques are presented. Possible alternative techniques are also described. Two restoration operations are discussed.

Several simplifications have been accepted in filtration theory during the past fifty years in an effort to avoid apparently intractable mathematical problems. In effect, these simplifications ignored the variation in average cake porosity and average filtration resistance with variation in pressure drop or with time. This study examines the traditional approach and shows that, in many cases, it cannot give correct design guidance. Using a set of dimensionless parameters because of the large number of significant variables, a revised theory is developed which does not require that porosity and resistance values be set constant. Graphs developed in the traditional approach (e.g., dt/dv versus v or t/v versus V) have substantial curvature near the ordinate; but this curvature is frequently ignored in theory and is easily missed in experiments. The revised theory allows more accurate design calculations, especially for compressible cakes.

For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been investigating certain problems relating to the blast furnace. In the course of these investigations it was desirable to measure, with the optical pyrometer, the temperatures occurring in the hearth of the furnace. Since no systematic measurements of these temperatures have been published a statement of the results may be of interest. The data given in this paper were obtained it thirty-two blast furnaces operated by seventeen companies; twenty of these furnaces were making iron, eight ferromanganese, and five spiegeleisen. The collection of this information was made possible by the cooperation of the American Manganese Co., Bethlehem Steel Corpn., Brier Hill Steel Co., Buffalo Union Furnace Co., Clinton Iron & Steel Co., Donner Steel Co., John B. Guernsey & Co., Jones & Laughlin Steel Co., E. E. Alluvial valley floors constitute a valuable land resource and are important to ranching operations in the semiarid western United States. This resource may be in jeopardy locally if the alluvial deposits are disturbed by surface mining of coal deposits. Erosion problems caused by poor land-use practices can cause trenching of the unconsolidated alluvium with a consequent lowering of the water table and depletion of soil moisture needed to support vegetation. Historical evidence of this sequence of events is abundant in the geologic literature and serves as the basis for assessing potential impacts of surface mining. The potential geomorphic impacts of surface mining on alluvial valley floors with regard to fluvial processes are. (1) disruption of the longitudinal profile followed by valley trenching and high sediment yields downstream, and (2) replacement of the excavated alluvium with unconsolidated material that does not have similar physical characteristics and may be susceptible to erosion. Mining may disrupt the existing hydrologic framework affecting stream flow, ground-water levels, and water quality of both surface and ground water. Although functional hydrologic and geomorphic processes are similar, each valley represents a complex environment that does not submit to broad generalizations.

Gaspe Copper Mines Ltd., a subsidiary of Noranda Mines Ltd., operates a completely integrated copper mining, milling and smelting plant at Murdochville, on the Gaspe Peninsula of Quebec. Operating six days a week, the mine produces 8000 tpd of ore. The mill runs continuously and capacity is rated at 6500 tpd of ore. Treating Gaspe concentrate output plus a certain amount of custom concentrate, the smelter produces between 3700 and 4000 tons of copper anodes per month.

This paper gives a brief history of the mining and milling operations in the Juneau gold belt, and a general description of the geology of the district, followed by a suggestive discussion of the general problem of sampling gold ores and a detailed description of the mining methods used in the Alaska Juneau mine. The paper indicates that variations in assaying ore similar to that from the gold belt are unavoidable on account of the erratic distribution of the gold. A caving system that accepts dilution was adopted for the Alaska Juneau mine; the ore is sorted and the final mill feed has nearly twice the assay value of the ore trammed. THE property of the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Co., covering the Juneau gold belt for over a mile in length, consists of 136 claims and 24 mill sites; these are near Juneau, Alaska, in what is known as the Harris mining district.

In an earlier paper1 the composition-temperature limits of the gamma iron phase in the iron-tungsten system were reported as approximated by thermal analyses. At that time no attempt was made to develop metallographic evidence of the coexistence of two phases in the iron-rich solid solution at temperatures between 900" C. and 1400" C.
