This paper has been prepared at the suggestion of Mr. Dunbar D. Scott, to supplement his " Evolution of Mine-Surveying Instruments."† Before entering into a detailed history of solar instruments, a few remarks will be made touching upon land-surveys in general, and on what has led to the development of these instruments.The oxidation of metals melted in contact with air takes place with dissimilar results. Tin, lead or zinc are examples of a class, the oxides of which float on the surface of the melted metal. First a film is produced, which covers the surface; then, if agitation from any cause exposes new metal to the action of the air, additional oxidation takes place, and the film is increased in volume. This change goes on until a considerable quantity of oxide (or " dross," as it is technically called) is formed; depending, of course, upon the duration of the exposure of the metal to the atmosphere. When such metals are poured, the dross may be skimmed off; and clean metal will be left underneath. The removal of such oxides is, therefore, merely a mechanical process. In the case of copper, however, the result is quite different. The sub-oxide of copper (Cu2O) is readily soluble in molten copper; and therefore, instead of the formation of a film of oxide, to be finally removed as dross, the surface of the metal remains bright and clear, because the oxide has been dissolved as soon as it was produced. It is customary in the process of copper-refining to leave a small quantity of oxide in the metal, in order to oxidize any traces of bismuth, arsenic or antimony which have not been entirely removed. The structure of eutectics has been studied by a number of investigators, and the complexity of the structural relationship of the components has been agreed upon, especially that of the "eutectic colony," type III of Portevin's1 classification. This paper does not attempt to alter the present classifications of eutectics; rather, it discusses the relationship between the macrostructure and the microstructure of the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, and describes in detail the mechanism of the formation and the structure of the eutectic. Further, throughout the entire discussion it attempts to point out certain misconceptions in regard to the interpretation of the observed structure of the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, one of the so-called "eutectic colony" types, and to correlate as much as possible the work done by the writer with that done by other investigators. Of the three types of eutectics listed by Portevin,2 the eutectic colony type has presented the greatest difficulty in interpretation. Although the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic is typical of the eutectic colony type in appearance, it may not be truly representative because the copper forms about 96 per cent of the eutectic and the cuprous oxide about 4 per cent. The interpretation of the origin and structure of the "eutectic colony" given here is strictly limited, therefore, to the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic. Macrostructure Fig. 1 shows the macrostructure of the eutectic at 3 diameters, the melt having been chill-cast into an iron mold, the resulting specimen sawed into two parts and the section polished and etched with the usual mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ammonium hydroxide. This specimen contains 0.48 per cent oxygen and is only slightly hypereutectic. If such a melt is allowed to cool slowly, large macrograins will form without the columnar structure of Fig. 1 and the well-known phenomenon of liquation will occur, forming copper oxide dendrites at the top and copper

A NUMBER of methods have been developed for the determination of the dust concentration in air, some of which have been reported as very efficient and for research may be more satisfactory than the method about to be described. In practical mine use, however, the accurate research equipment is unwieldy and requires a high degree of technical skill to manipulate it. Also, it gives less general practical information to the operator in the same length of time than the method described here. Moreover, it is doubtful whether at the present stage of affairs the results obtained from the precise methods have any more practical significance than those obtained with simpler and more portable apparatus, which can rapidly give a sufficiently reliable indication of the relative dust hazard. HISTORY OF DUST DETERMINATION IN ONTARIO The first record of mine-dust determination in Ontario is given in an article by Dr. J. H. Elliott,' in which he records a few dust counts made with the Palmer spray apparatus. There were insufficient data from which to draw any definite conclusions or reasonably compare with present-day counts using the konimeter. The first konimeter dust sampling was started in the Porcupine district in 1926, using light-field counting without adhesive and with no sample treatment before counting. A method of semidark-field counting was used from about 1928 to 1931 and dark-field illumination was adopted permanently about December 1931. The konimeter has been continued as the principal means of dust sampling in the mines of Ontario, where South African practice has been adopted because in South Africa most careful study has been given the problem of silicosis, and very complete records of work done there are

Ground raw material as fed to the cement kiln generally is a mixture of two to four components, each of which may have widely varying physical and grinda-bility characteristics. Chemically similar materials found in the same or different deposits may also differ appreciably in physical properties, depending on their crystalline structure. The calcareous or principal cement raw material may vary from a soft chalky limestone or friable cement rock at one plant to a hard limestone or oyster shell at another plant. Argillaceous materials include clays, shales and granulated slag. Siliceous and/or iron-bearing material, including sand, iron ore and cinders, may also be required in addition for certain types of mixes. Frequently differences in grindability characteristics are not given the attention they deserve in comparing grinding results at one plant with those at another or in selecting suitable circuits or equipment. Many types of crushing and grinding units are used, with numerous open and closed circuit arrangements. Both wet and dry processes are used successfully. When rebuilding or installing a new grinding department, the choice of process or circuit in some cases may be dictated by the nature of the materials being ground but in other cases it may be the result of good salesmanship or a compromise. An over-all evaluation of wet process vs. dry process grinding should not be made without considering the effects on all other producing departments in the plant. In general, the more recent grinding installations, both wet and dry, have employed closed circuits, but many older open circuits are still in successful operation. In our experience, closed-circuit raw grinding pays, because of lower power consumption and less operating labor per ton of product. However, some dry open-circuit mills with improved equipment and operating methods compare favorably in performance with dry closed-circuit units. Character of Ground Raw Mix (Kiln Feed) Grinding in the cement plant in general requires a considerably her product than in most ore-grinding operations. A distinction between fineness of kiln feed and of cement may be made in that kiln feed preferably should be ground to a limiting size,whereas finished cement should include a range of size fractions including sufficient fine flours to give a product with satisfactory physical qualities. Grinding raw mix for kiln feed therefore is more comparable to ore grinding, although the limiting size is smaller. Most kiln feeds are ground from 85 to 95 per cent passing 200-mesh, depending on mix composition. Some cement chemists believe that raw materials cannot be too he, since finer particles theoretically combine more readily and intimately in the kiln. However, there are certain definite practical objections to extremely fine kiln feed, such as loss of kiln dust, unstable material flow through the kiln and greater dificulty in control of chemical composition due to dust loss, and the disproportion of fines from the more easily ground component. Discussion of the paper of ROSWELL H. JOHNSON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 221 to 226. A. C. LANE, Tufts College, Mass.-About a year ago Mr. Washburne read a paper on the same characteristic oil-sand waters, discussing their chemical character, and the possibility of their chemical character being modified by adsorption in passing through the shale. We are used to consider circulation as being in one stratum, and I have often gone so far as to think that 2,000 or 3,000 ft. clown I could recognize the chemical character as in part connate to a given water. For instance, the St. Peter sandstone, far underneath oil sands, seems to retain' a relatively fresh and peculiar character. I am, therefore, tempted to ask the writer if in his experiments lie has made any test to see whether the chemical character of these waters is also changed, where there is any adsorption, so that the water passing through these fine-grained beds should leave behind its salt as well as its oil. In many cases salt-waters are associated with oil and-gas. A second question has occurred to me. In these days when we hear a good deal about oil flotation, may it not be well to repeat these experi-ments with pyritic concentrates, and see if they observe precisely the same with regard to the selective accumulation of oil and gas. ROSWELL H. JOHNSON.-I thank Profesor Lane for bringing this question forward. I recognize its importance, but. am not able to say I have any data upon that point. It is also very interesting in connection with Dr. Day's hypothesis of fractional filtration, and we may very easily get something happening to the water corresponding in some degree to what we get with oil. D. B. REGER, Morgantown, W. Va.-Mr. Johnson in his paper states his belief that the oil is formed originally from organic matter in the shale, and is forced out of the shale into the porous reservoir of the sand above the shale. He states further, that as you go deeper iii the measures where there is an increasing overburdens, the oil becomes less and the gas increases in large proportion, or lie says that the oil is forced back out of the sand by pressure, into the shale.

THE United Verde mine is in the north central part of Arizona, on the northeasterly slope of the Black Hills, near the town of Jerome. Ore was first discovered in the district about 1875, and the first mining claims were located by M. A. Ruffner and associates in 1877. In 1888 the late Senator William A. Clark secured control of the property and under his ownership it developed into one of the country's most important copper producers. The property was sold to the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1935, and since then has been under this Corporation's management. Except for shutdowns caused by general world-market conditions, production has been continuous from 189o to date. GEOLOGY The mineralized zone ranges in area from approximately 12 acres to less than 5 acres. All mineralization occurs in the pre-Cambrian intrusives. The first intrusion, according to geologic records, was the quartz porphyry, which later was intruded by augite diorite. Following the diorite intrusion through a series of intrusions of lesser magnitude, a pipelike mass of massive sulphide, quartz and rock was formed. The diorite forms the hanging wall of this mass, and the porphyry the footwall. Between the footwall and the sulphide a band of chlorite schist was formed, probably owing to metamorphic conditions. Commercial ore occurs along the contact of the schist and sulphide extending into the sulphide, sometimes entirely through the schist, and fingering out into the porphyry. The ore deposit was formed by replacement similar to deposits formed in limestone areas. Faulting and deformation occurred in pre-Cambrian times and again in the Tertiary period, removing approximately 2000 ft. from the top of the main United Verde ore body, forming the United Verde Extension ore body, the only other major ore body in the district. Major development work has shown that the sulphide mass extends to the 3300-ft. level, and diamond drilling below this level has indicated that the mass might extend below the 3700-ft. level, but in a diminished quantity. While many copper minerals exist in the mine, the chief commercial mineral is chalcopyrite. GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND PHYSICAL CONDITION OF MINE After over 50 years of active production, ore still exists on almost every level of the mine. This condition is due to many causes -mine fires, which broke out as early as 1894, caused the abandonment of certain areas; subsidence and ground movements retarded the cleaning up of others. Furthermore, in the early days there was such an abundance of ore that when mining became difficult it was a simple matter to replace the production by going to a deeper level. A consideration of the literature shows the inadequacy of Fick's Laws to describe the diffusion of hydrogen in steels below 400°C. These laws are modified an the assumption that hydrogen is delayed at fixed sites in the lattice. Approximate and exact solutions of the resulting nonlinear system are derived for simple geometrical shapes. The results qualitatively account for the observed anomalous behavior. Experimental methods for verifying the theory are suggested. 1 HIS paper presents a new analysis of the diffusion behavior of hydrogen in steel based on a physical model which supposes that hydrogen atoms wander in a random manner through the crystal lattice, but tend to get trapped or delayed at certain fixed sites uniformly distributed throughout the metal. These sites, which will be called traps, are regarded merely as potential wells of significantly greater depth than those encountered in regular regions of the crystal lattices and no assumptions are made concerning their nature or origin. The results of experimental studies of the diffusion of hydrogen in iron and steel have usually been reported in the literature in terms of a diffusion constant D derived under the assumptions that the hydrogen concentration C is governed by Fick's laws.1 Fig. I is a composite of published graphs of the man. ner in which the values of D, so derived, vary with temperature. It is convenient to consider this material in two categories; the high temperature results above 400°C, and the results at lower temperatures. The graphs 2, 3, 4, 5 in the first class lie within a factor of three of each other and are relatively consistent compared with the low-temperature values. There is an increasing divergence in values of D with decreasing temperature till at room temperature they are spread over three orders of magnitude. Small values of D have been obtained for work-hardened specimens.' It is evident that D is a function of other variables besides temperature in this range and that these neglected variables are in some way connected with the work hardening experienced by the specimen. In view of evidence for an interaction between hydrogen in solution and dislocations9'10 and adsorption on crack surfaces,' some doubts must be entertained about the validity of Fick's laws and their associated physical model of noninteracting particles in random motion through the medium. More direct evidence of their inapplicability to the diffusion of hydrogen in steel was first produced by Darken and smith." Consider the permeation of hydrogen through a plate of thickness a under a boundary concentration Co at the ingoing, and zero at the outgoing, face. The Aldrich Mining Go. holds under lease from the Illinois Central R. R. Co. about 14,000 acres, in the east half of Township 12, Range 12 W., in Marion county, Alabama, and owns other lands, of which about 1,000 acres adjoin this leased tract, making a total area of about 15,000 acres, all of which is underlain by the coal-seam upon which the company is operating. This seam is nearly horizontal; and a ravine, diagonally crossing the tract, exposes the outcrop on either side for about 2 miles. The territory has been so divided that nearly the whole of it can be worked out by two collieries. The mines at Brilliant were opened in the fall of 1898, and shipments began in the following spring. The original plan was to furnish steam-coal for locomotives to the Illinois Central R. R. Co.; and upon this expectation the investment of capital was made. The field was entirely new; and the softness of the coal at the outcrop induced the belief that it could be very cheaply mined. A contract for the delivery of a large quantity of coal to the railroad was accordingly executed. But with the advance of' the entries to increasing distances from the outcrop, the coal proved so hard that it could no longer be drilled with a breast-auger; and the expense of mining became so great that the contract for cheap steam-coal had to be canceled. It became evident that the work must be done with machinery and explosives, if it could be profitably done at all. On the other hand, the excellent quality of this coal opened, at the same time, a possible market not specially contemplated at the outset—namely, that of a first-rate coal for domestic and general uses. THe Pocahontas district occupies the extreme southern end of West Virginia, principally McDowell, Mercer and Wyoming counties, and a part of Tazewell county, in southwestern Virginia. The first record of the coal field is a report by Prof. J. P. Lesley, of Pennsylvania, about 1880, in which he mentions a coal opening at the upper end of Abbs Valley, Tazewell county, Va. C. R. Boyd, a mining engineer of Wytheville, Va., published a series of articles in 1881, mentioning coal on Indian Creek, Tazewell county, and on Horse Pen creek, which coals, he stated, extended toward the Ohio River. He also mentions the Abbs Valley coal reported by Lesley. In 1881, F. J. Kimball (who became president of the Norfolk & Western R. R. in 1883)) after examining the Scott mine in Abbs Valley, went northward across Abbs Valley Mountain to the place now known as Pocahontas, where he located what has since been called No. 3 vein of Pocahontas coal. In November, 1882, Jed Hotchkiss and others prepared a cross-section of the Flat Top Mountain coal measures, some notes on which were published by Mr. Hotchkiss, between 1880 and 1892, under the title of " The Virginias.' In May, 1881, the Norfolk & Western R. R. was organized through the purchase of the Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio R. R., an old line running from Norfolk, Va., to Bristol, Tenn., with branches from Petersburg to City Point and from Glade Springs to Saltville. At that time, charters had been granted for three railroads tributary to the New River Valley, but their proposed routes would indicate that the promoters were concerned with minerals, timber, and a connection with the Chesapeake & Ohio R. R., rather than the development of any coal in the Pocahontas district. One of them was projected to extend up Bluestone River a short distance, but not far enough to reach the coal in the Bluestone Valley, and a little grading was done for a narrow-gage road between New River Station and a point in Giles county, Virginia, near the West Virginia line. All charters and railroads in this district were acquired by the Norfolk & Western R.R.

EXPERIMENTAL work on liquefaction of coal was taken up by the Bureau of Mines in 1936 when it became evident that a prudent policy from the national point of view should include preparation for the time when gradual exhaustion of petroleum resources would require supplementing the growing demand for motor fuel with gasoline and diesel oil from coal. At that time (1936) certain foreign nations that had no home sources of petroleum, especially Germany, England, and Japan, were conducting active research and at least two of them were producing liquid fuel from coal on a commercial scale. Germany was reported to have an annual producing capacity of 800,000 metric tons of gasoline per year, and England had just put into operation the Billingham plant of Imperial Chemical Industries for the hydrogenation of bituminous coal and tar by the Bergius-.I.G. process. The annual capacity of this plant was about 150,000 long tons of gasoline per annum (3500 bbl. per day). With these developments taking place in foreign countries, it seemed important to undertake a long-range program of fundamental research in this country to establish a sound groundwork for the evaluation of foreign work on synthetic liquid fuels and at the same time to obtain data on the oil yields and operating difficulties using various kinds of American coals and lignite to the hydrogenation process. The results of such research would be useful in determining the yields and quality of liquid products obtainable from various coals so that American industry would be in position to select the most suitable coals and make rapid progress in establishing this new industry when the commercial need should arise. It was hoped, also, that progress in a better understanding of the chemistry of coal hydrogenation would reduce the cost of the process materially. To carry out this program, a small continuous unit capable of hydrogenating 100 lb. of coal in 24 hr. was installed at the Central Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh, Pa. Small steel autoclaves or bombs of 0.3 gal. (1.2 liters) capacity also were used for batch-hydrogenation experiments in the study of the chemical fundamentals of the process. Much valuable assistance was obtained in planning the experimental program and designing the equipment from the Fuel Research Station of Great Britain and the Fuel Laboratories of the Mines Department of Canada, where such investigations had been in progress for several years. Relative permeability and relative electrical resistivity curves are obtained for networks of tubes with a tube radius distribution by means of a network of resistors used as an analog model. These curves are similar to those obtained from real porous media. The effects of pore size distribution and network structure on relative permeability and resistivity are demonstrated. INTRODUCTION Study of the dynamic properties of networks of single size tubes in paper IT' of this series has shown that the network model has flow properties similar to those observed on real porous media. The comparison of properties of single size tube networks with those of real porous media cannot be carried far because very few porous media have uniform size pores. The capillary pressure curve from most porous materials such as soil, sandstone, and sintered glass indicate that these materials have pore size distribution similar to those shown in Figs. 5-1, 9-1, and 10-I.† To properly test the network model, it is therefore necessary to compare the dynamic properties of real porous media with those of networks of tubes in which the tube radii are distributed accord- ing to the distributions in the aforementioned figures. A network in which the tube sizes are distributed cannot be treated in the same manner as a network of single size tubes. In the single size tube network, the relation between tube geometry, flow resistance, and tube volume did not have to be known if the assumption was made that whatever relation did exist was the same for all tubes in a particular network. In a network of distributed tube size, the relation between tube geometry and flow resistance must be known or assumed in order to replace the tubes by equivalent electrical resistors. Relation of Tube Geometry to Flow Resistance The interchangeability of tubes and electrical resistors in the network model is possible because of the analogy between Poiseuille's law and Ohm's law. Poiseuille's law for a cylinder is q= pr4/8µl ?P.........(1) where q is the volumetric rate of flow, µ is the viscosity, ?P is the pressure gradient, r is the tube radius, and 1 is the tube length. Ohm's law is I=1/R?E..........(2) where I is the flux and is equivalent to the volumetric rate in Poiseuille's law, R is the resistance, and ?E is the voltage gradient. Both laws give the flux as a function of the potential drop and the resistance of the medium. By analogy then, 1/R=pr4/8µl ?P...........(3)

SOME years ago we collated all laboratory data then available to us on the distribution at equilibrium of manganese and of sulphur between metal and simple slags, and used the results in setting up an equation, which proved to be in accord with determinations of the distribution ratio of manganese and of sulphur between liquid steel and open-hearth slag, over a wide range of operating conditions. We now present an outline of our calculations and inferences on these two closely related questions, which are of especial importance because of the advisability of conserving manganese wherever possible. In general, our results show that in the open-hearth furnace equilibrium between metal and slag, with respect to both manganese and sulphur, is substantially attained during the finishing period of the heat, or in about a half hour to an hour after any additions were made. This implies that the end result will be identical whether manganese is added as alloy or metal to the liquid steel or as oxide to the slag. The proportion of total manganese retained by the steel is favored: (I) by use of the minimum amount of lime, consistent with other operating limitations, required to give a lime-silica ratio of about 2.4, which usually corresponds to a minimum practical slag volume; (2) by a high concentration in the slag of MnO relative to FeO; (3) by high operating temperature. Absorption of sulphur by the slag from the liquid metal is favored: (I) by large slag volume; (2 by a high concentration of active (or "free") lime and of manganese oxide dis) solved in the slag; (3) by low concentration of silica, iron oxide, and phosphate dissolved in the slag. DISTRIBUTION OF MANGANESE BETWEEN SLAG AND METAL AT EQUILIBRIUM On the basis that the distribution of manganese between liquid steel and slag is controlled by the reaction [FeO + Mn = MnO + Fe [A]slag metal slag metal] the distribution at equilibrium, at a given temperature, is expressed by the equilibrium constant for this reaction, which is defined as [K" aMoO aFeI1 dFec) aMn] where a is the activity of the molecular species denoted by the subscript. The activity of each of the several components, although it is not known precisely, is approximately equal to the concentration of each component expressed as its mol fraction; that is, as the ratio of the number of mols of the given component to the total number of mols of all the molecular species present in the metal or slag, as the case may be. Moreover, since the activity, or concentration, of iron in the liquid metal is in fact substantially constant, the term [afe] may be combined with K" to give a new constant K'. Making these changes,

Little correlation has been made between the character of ground to be drilled and sampled and the type of drilling most desirable for procuring satisfactory samples. In development work, the engineer and metallurgist often desire the recovery of a sample in as physically natural a condition as possible, particularly when the sample must provide material for process tests as well as chemical and physical analyses. This paper describes the results of experimentation in drilling unconsolidated materials carrying titanium minerals in the Magnet Cove area, Ark. The drilling was most difficult in that the ground varied much in consistency, and it was vitally necessary to recover a physically natural sample. Ordinary churn drilling recovered a sample that could be analyzed chemically, but the sample was not in its natural state. The problem was successfully solved by utilizing and further developing methods used in the oil and clay industries.

UNder the impetus of new demands caused by the defense program, the oil and gas industries of Kansas established new records during the year 1941. In all, 2113 wells were drilled, which compares favorably with the record total drilled in 1937. These 2113 tests resulted in 1446 oil wells, 76 gas wells and 592 dry holes. In all three categories there was an increase over the previous year, but unfortunately the most marked increase was in the dry holes. Nearly 80 per cent of the increase must be allocated to the drilling 01 unsuccessful tests. This was partly because of the increasing difficulty of finding new reserve areas and partly because of the erratic character of the production in the Arbuckle dolomite, which is now the main producing zone. Closer analysis of the totals reveals that western Kansas accounted for 1634 tests, of which 1186 were oil wells, 34 were gas wells and 415 were dry holes. The total potential initial daily production uncovered by the successful wells amounted to 1,691,000 bbl. of oil and 508,000,000 cu. ft. of gas. Both figures indicate a considerable decrease when compared with the proceeding year; in 1940 the respective figures were 2,128,000 bbl. and 1,289,000,000 cu. feet. In eastern Kansas a total of 479 wells were drilled. Among these, 260 were oil wells accounting for a daily initial potential production of 45,662 bbl. The new gas wells numbered 42 and added 290,438,000 cu. ft. per day to the gas potential production of the state. The remaining tests, 177 in number, were dry. It is interesting and significant that almost half (791) of the total wells drilled in western Kansas were drilled by the independent operators. Among the large companies the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 169 wells; the Stanolind Oil and Gas CO., 101; the Skelly Oil Co., 80; the Continental Oil Co., 99, and the Shell Petroleum Co., 63 wells. In eastern Kansas the independent operators drilled 406 out of the total of 479 wells. Among the major oil companies the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 38; the Phillips Petroleum Co., 13, and the Sinclair-Prairie Oil Co., II wells. The figures on relative percentages of dry holes to successful oil or gas wells are revealing. In western Kansas approximately one third of all wells drilled by the independent operators were dry holes. The major oil companies drilled approximately 844 wells in western Kansas, of which 678 were successful in finding either oil or gas. It thus appears that the major companies fared much Getter than the independents. In eastern Kansas the major companies drilled 73 wells of which 63 were successful in finding commercial quantities of oil or gas. No less than 286 wildcat tests were put down in western Kansas and 72 in eastern Kansas, or 358 in all, during 1941. Considerably more than half of these were drilled by independent operators; zoo in western and 66 in eastern Kansas. An exploratory hole % mile or more from production is regarded as a wildcat well in Kansas. The camphor-anthracene system was chosen as a transparent low-melting analog of the zirconium carbide -graphite system. Camphor and zirconium car -bide both grow nonfaceted, while casting of mixtures yields platelets of both anthracene and graphite. Zone melting of thin layers of organic was observed under the microscope. Irregular lamellar structures were produced at high values of the ratio of the temperature gradient G to the zoning rate V. The anthracene invariably led the camphor, indicating lower kinetic undercooling for the anthracene. The lamellar spacing was an order of magnitude greater than typical spacings for metal eutectic systems. Exact behavior depended on orientation of the anthracene. Oriented dendritic structures were produced at low values of G/V. Transient and oscillatory behavior were also observed—much of it unexpected. A.RC-CAST refractory carbide-graphite mixtures are promising thermal-shock resistant materials. Oriented structures of these materials would be superior to arc-cast materials for many applications. Mollard and Flemings1 and Cline2 have shown that aligned structures can be obtained for a wide range of Pb-Sn alloys. However, these metals both solidify in a nonfaceted manner while graphite yields platelets or flakes. In addition only small diameter samples of Pb-Sn alloys were produced because it was necessary to avoid free convection and to have high temperature gradients. The purpose of the present work was twofold: 1) To observe the solidification of a transparent low-melting analog of carbide-graphite systems and 2) to see if larger diameter samples can be produced. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE When zirconium carbide-graphite mixtures are cast, the resulting structure naturally depends on composition. Carbide-rich mixtures yield metal-like nonfaceted carbide dendrites in a eutectic matrix. Graphite-rich alloys have graphite platelets in a eutectic matrix. Empirically it was found that camphor-anthracene mixtures produce similar structures with camphor being nonfaceted and anthracene forming plates. The organic eutectic melted at 116°C and was composed of 78 wt pet camphor.3 The camphor used was U.S.P. grade from Fisher Scientific Company; the anthracene was 98+ pet fro Aldrich Chemical Co. The impurity content is judged to be on the order of 1 pet. Mixtures ranging from 50 to 88 wt pet camphor were employed for the experiments. All but one of the experiments were performed on the microscope-stage zone melting apparatus described in detail elsewhere.4 The organic mixtures were contained in horizontal cells made of microscope slides or cover glasses. In most of the cells the organic was present as a very thin layer, thus giving almost two-dimensional growth behavior. The cells were moved slowly under a heated wire, which caused a molten zone to move through the solid at rates ranging from 0.01 to 5.4 cm per hr. The temperature gradient was estimated before moving the zone by measuring the distance between the line where all solid was melted (freezing point) and that where solid first began to melt (eutectic temperature). The temperature gradient was found to be 465°C per cm in the thinnest cells used, which were made by pressing together two microscope cover slips in the organic melt and then rapidly withdrawing them. RESULTS The experimental results are described in four parts: simultaneous growth, dendritic growth, irregular growth, and transients and erratic phenomena. An analysis has been made of the factors responsible for tilted fluid contacts in petroleum reservoirs. The factors are static and dynamic with the former being controlled by those variables responsible for the capillary rise of fluids, and the latter include rate of formation tilt and hydraulic circulation. The explanation that rate of formation tilt may be responsible for tilted contacts appears untenable. The role of some of these factors in the migration, fractionation. accumulation and possibly the prospecting for oil is indicated. INTRODUCTION While it is generally considered that the segregation of gas, oil, and water in a petroleum reservoir results in approximately horizontal planes separating these phases. there are factor; which modify this simplified picture to a very great extent. Some of these factors are static. and the departure of the fluid interfaces from horizontal may represent a static equlibriun. Some of these factors may be dynamic and the interface positions may be non-equilibrium and represent a steady .state condition. Of course combinations of these two situations may also exist. The reasons most commonly given for this behavior are hydraulic circulation of fluids, change in character of the formation, and a rate of tilt of the formations more rapid than the rate at which the fluids may re-establish an equilibrium. Russell's Principles of Petroleum Geology' contains an extensive discussion of tilted fluid interfaces and their importance in the migration and accumulation of petroleum. Russell cites examples of tilted water tables at Lance Creek, Wyo.; Rock River, Wyo.: Cut Bank. Mont.; Cushing, Okla.: and Graham; Okla. Also given was the Wasson Field of West Texas which has saucer shaped oil-water and gas-oil interfaces with the saucer being deeper in the case of the oil-water contact. The Bradford Field in Pennsylvania has a tilted water table. San Ardo. Coalinga None and some other California field.; have tilled contacts. A recent paper by King Hubbert discuses the effect of hydraulic circulation of the water underlying the oil in a given stratun and it- implications in the accumulation of and drilling for the oil. The foregoing would indicate that tilted fluid interfaces are not uncommon and that it would be of importance to underbtand the forces which are responsible. Further. it would be of interest to examine certain idealized models of situations which may cause tilting with the thought in mind of deriving relatinnships between the important variables. These relationships may only hold exactly for the model* assumed but the results may apply semi-quantitatively to actual formations and at least indicate trends. The discussion will be divided into the effect of static factors and the effect of dynamic factors. STATIC FACTORS It has already been mentioned that one reason given for tilted contacts is a variation in formation properties. Specifically this is a change in the pore size of the formation capilaries. If the internal surface of the reservoir is preferetially wet by water, capillarity will cause the water 10 rise to a greater extent above the free water table in a small capillary than in a large one. Consequently the water-oil contact will be higher in the lower permeability sands than in the higher permeability sand.;. The free water table may be defined as the position the oil-water interface would take if capillarity were absent. Since the phenomenon is the capillary rise of water in an oil environment, a derivation of this shold give a relationship between the variables. Results of impulsive wedge penetration tests on two synthetic, plastically deforming rocks are presented. Basic data obtained were force-time, displacement-time, and force-displacement curves for the impacts, plus the crater geometry. Wedge geometry and blow frequency were varied over a considerable range. The synthetic rocks consisted of wax-sand mixtures; two waxes of diflerent ductilities were used to provide variable "rock" characteristics. Conventional triaxial tests showed that these synthetic rocks exhibited force-deformation curves and Mohr envelopes quite similar to real rocks, except that strengths were much lower. Measured forces from static penetration tests agreed closely with theoretical values; however, dynamic force values were much higher than the static. These latter disparities are attributed to the viscous nature of the waxes. Thus the utility of these or similar rock models must depend on the scaling of rock viscosity, which is as yet unknown for impulsive loadings at elevated stress states. It appears, however, that some macroscopic, static phenomena may be studied with wax-sand rock models. INTRODUCTION The resistance of solid materials to indentation or perforation by projectiles or other penetrators has been studied by workers in many areas. Despite these efforts no universally accepted laws or formulas are available for describing experimental observations. In the metals field the force-deformation behavior of impacting bodies is often analyzed by the Hertz law for elastic collisions, the Meyer law if plastic deformations occur, or some combination of both.' The similarities of these expressions to empirical drilling formulas of the oil industry are apparent. Beginning with the basic contributions of Simon and co-workers at Battelle,' a number of experimental papers concerning the reaction of rocks to vertical impact have appeared in the U. S. mining and petroleum literature.'-' Most published data have, to date, been obtained at atmospheric pressure, although some early high pressure information was reported by Payne and Chippendale.8 Maurer" has recently utilized available brittle impact data to develop a drilling rate equation based on the experimentally observed proportionality between crater volume and blow energy. His result agreed with earlier efforts by both Somerton, who used dimensional analysis, and Outmans, who used plasticity theory. It has long been known that rocks exhibit different modes of failure depending on the state of stress. The literature in this area is considerable; however, papers by Bredthauer, Handin and Hager,13 nd Robinson", are adequate to illustrate the point. Since rocks flow plastically at certain triaxial stress conditions, the mathematical theory of plasticity has been used to analyze the rock drilling problem. Cheatham'" has altered the wedge identation solution of Randtl to rocks, and has developed useful equations for penetrator forces under a variety of conditions. Outmans" has utilized Hill's solution in a similar manner to develop a drilling rate equation. Both Cheatham and Outmans used the linear Mohr-Coulomb rule to relate rock strength and confining pressure. The actual stress at the hole bottom is not easily ascertained, although photoelastic studies by Galle and Wil-hoit," plus the analytical treatment of Cheatham and wilhoiti8 provide some insight. Consequently it is not clear to what extent the highly idealized rheological model of a perfectly plastic solid can be realistically applied to the rock drilling problem. This paper is the first report on a long range experimental study of crater formation in rocks at elevated stress states. The data presented here are from the first phase of the project. Data obtained from impulsive wedge impacts on two synthetic, plastically deforming rocks are presented. MODEL ROCKS Geologists have long been faced with modelling the behavior of the earth and, as a consequence, have studied scaling problems in some detail.' In general, their main problem is handling the wide disparity between laboratory and geologic time. In our studies the time effects (blow velocity or rate of loading, blow duration, etc.) were essentiafly the same for both. model and prototype, as were were geometry and tooth penetration.
