An analysis is made of the formulas and ,methods used to estimate the contribution of grain boundary sliding to the overall strain of a polycrystal. The errors involved in the approximations and/or ,mistakes in earlier work are assessed quantitatively so as to make possible the critical use of previously published data. SINCE it has been found that, under conditions of very slow creep, the strain due to grain boundary sliding (?gb) may contribute as much as 80 pct of the total creep strain,1,2 it is obviously important to have reliable methods for estimating this grain boundary strain. In two recent papers Stevens3,4 has drawn attention to the pitfalls encountered in assessing ?gb. He criticizes 1) the assumptions made in the derivation of some of the formulas for ?gb, and 2) the indiscriminate averaging procedures used for obtaining the quantities substituted in these formulas. These and further criticisms of earlier work are mostly valid. Unfortunately the only formulas and procedures recommended are either impossible or very difficult to apply in practice. Furthermore no attempt is made to assess the errors involved by the earlier approximations or mistakes, and so it is not possible to make critical use of any of these early dab. The present article attempts to improve on these shortcomings by reference to empirical verification of easily applied formulas whose theoretical derivations involve some otherwise unjustifiable assumptions, and by a quantitative assessment of the errors in previous work. DEFINITIONS First it is necessary to define the terms and symbols to be used. The choice of symbols preferred here is a logical combination and extension of the v introduced by McLean5 and the u by Brunner and rant.' In Fig. 1 the two grains X and Y are displaced by the sliding vector AC. u is the component of sliding resolved along the stress axis, v is that measured perpendicular both to the stress axis and to the specimen surface, and w is that measured perpendicular to the stress axis but in the plane of the surface. Two angles define the orientation of the grain boundary: 8, between the stress axis and the surface trace of the boundary, and +, the internal angle on a longitudinal section cut perpendicular to the surface. In computing the strain resulting from the boundary displacement at all the in- dividual boundaries in a polycrystal the components u, v, or w are sometimes averaged along a longitudinal line (i.e., parallel to the stress axis), sometimes along a transverse line, and sometimes at randomly chosen boundaries. Averages obtained in these three ways are given subscripts 1, t, and r, respectively. Stevens rightly calls attention to the possibility of non-equiaxed grain shapes either at the start or at the end of deformation. In this article all values of numbers of grains per unit length will refer to measurements made before deformation. The subscripts 1 and t will be used for the number of grains per unit length obtained along longitudinal and transverse lines, r for that obtained by averaging along a number of randomly directed lines. FORMULAS FOR ?gb ?gt, as a Function of u. An obvious truth is that cgb can, in principle, be obtained by summation of all the v components at the boundaries intersected by a longitudinal line of known length I, viz.: where nl is the number of grains per unit length, parallel to the stress axis, in the unstrained specimen. There are assumptions in the analytic derivation of Eq. [I] due to Brunner and rant' but ~achinger' arrived at Eq. [la] by a rigorous method. Unfortunately the experimental procedure required by Eq. [ la] proves very difficult as boundary migration tends to obscure the points at which the longitudinal line meets the grain boundary and the errors on such measurements tend to be large, see Fig. 2. For example, on a specimen of Magnox AL 80 at a creep strain of 9.7 pct, 300 measurements of u obtained from the points of intersection of a longitudinal line with the grain boundaries gave ul = 8.95 ± 3.58 pm, or an error of ±40 pct, at the 95 pct confidence limit. These large errors due to migration may be avoided by measuring u from the separation of the segments

The operative deformation elements in a-uranium single crystals under compression at room temperature have been determined as a function of the compression directions. The deformation mechanisms noted may be arranged with respect to their frequency of occurrence and ease of operation in the following order: 1 — (010)-[I001 slip, 2—{130} twinning, 3—{~172} twinning, and 4bunder special conditions of stress application, kinking, cross-slip, {.-176) twinning, and (011) slip. The composition planes of the (172) and (176) systems were found to be irrational. Cross-slip was shown to be associated with the major (010) slip system, coupled with localized interaction of slip on the (001) planes. The mechanism of kinking was found to be similar to that observed in other metals in that it occurred chiefly when the compression direction was, nearly parallel to the principal slip direction [loo] and was associated with a lattice rotation about an axis contained in the slip plane and normal to the slip direction: the [001] in the uranium lattice. The resolved critical shear stress for slip on the (010)-[100] system was found to be 0.34 kg per mm2 In a single test it was shown that under compression in suitable directions twinning on the (130) also occurs at 600°C. DEFORMATION mechanisms of large grained polycrystalline orthorhombic a-uranium have been studied by Cahn.1 A major slip system identified as the (010) with a probable [loo] slip direction and a minor slip system on the (110) planes were reported; the slip direction of the minor system was not determined. The twinning systems that were identified experimentally included the (130) and the irrational (172) composition planes; observations of other traces which were not as frequent and which did not lend themselves to positive experimental identification led Cahn to postulate on the basis of indirect evidence that twinning also occurred on (112) and (121) planes. In addition to the foregoing slip and twinning mechanisms, Cahn also observed kinking and cross-slip in conjunction with the major (010) system; the cooperative cross-slip plane was not identified. The availability of single crystals to the present authors has enabled them to check these results, particularly with reference to the doubtful mechanisms and the preference of operation of any one mechanism in relation to the direction of stress application. The tests were confined to compression only, primarily because of experimental limitations imposed by the size and shape of the available crystals. The tests were performed at room temperature except for one crystal compressed at 600°C. The compression directions were chosen to obtain a representative coverage of one quadrant of the stereo-graphic projection. To test the existence of some of the deformation elements that were reported by Cahn, but were not found in the present study, several additional crystals were compressed in specifically chosen directions considered most ideal for their operation. Experimental Techniques The single crystals were obtained by the grain coarsening technique described by Fisher? They grinding and polishing on rotating laps, with final surface preparation performed in a H3PO4-HNO3 electropolishing bath. A typical crystal readied for compression is shown in Fig. 1; their dimensions were rather small and depended upon the testing direction. Crystals isolated for compression in a direction close to the [010] axis, which lay roughly parallel to the longitudinal axis of the polycrystalline rod, were about 3 to 4 mm long and 5 mm2 in cross-section, while those prepared for compression in other directions were smaller. Most of the crystals were free from twin markings and showed no evidence of Laue asterism. Several crystals, however, contained twin traces prior to compression; these were identified prior to compression so as to clearly distinguish them from those initiated during deformation. The origin of the twin markings prior to deformation may be ascribed to two sources: thermal stresses and specimen handling during isolation and preparation. Two other types of imperfections in the crystals should be mentioned: inclusions, which were probably oxides or carbides. and three of the crystals contained a small number of spherical included grains (<0.01 mm diam), which were remnants of unabsorbed grains from the coarsening treatment. The volume represented by these imperfections was small, and their presence presented no difficulties in the interpretation of the macrodeformation processes during subsequent compression. Two reagents have been proposed for the commercial extraction of copper from leach liquors, namely LIX64N produced by General Mills Chemicals, Inc. and Kelex 120 produced by Ashland Chemical Company. Each of these reagents consists of an active extractant and an additive. In the LIX system, the additive improves the kinetics of the extraction reaction whereas for the Kelex system, the additive acts primarily as a third phase inhibitor. Equilibrium and kinetic studies have been conducted with both systems. In general, the Kelex system effectively extracts copper at a lower pH than LIX64N; furthermore, the rate of extraction with Kelex is considerably faster than with LIX which indicates that systems employing the Kelex extractants might also be able to employ agitated columns rather, than mixer- settlers which are absolutely necessary for effective extraction with the LIX reagents.

Systematic data are presented on the relation of composition of nickel silvers to color, tarnish resistance, hardness and liquidus temperatures, for alloys containing up to 30 per cent nickel and 50 per cent zinc, further modified at certain nickel and zinc contents by 0 to 8 per cent of tin and 0 to 10 per cent of lead. Attention has also been directed, using a still more limited range of alloys, toward a study of tensile properties and such casting properties and characteristics as fluidity, shrinkage and pressure tightness. In some of these, rather broad ranges of composition are dealt with; in others, it has been expedient to focus attention on the Federal Specification 20 per cent nickel silver casting alloy, WWP-541. Introduction The demand for an alloy essentially white in color, which could be cast and worked by simple methods and which possessed strength and corrosion-resisting properties superior to the usual brasses, led to the discovery and early use of cupronickel alloys containing zinc, and sometimes tin, lead and other metals. This type of alloy was generally known as &apos;German silver until the war, when the term "Nickel Silver" became generally accepted. The element principally responsible for the white color of the alloy and for its strength and corrosion resistance is nickel, which may constitute from 8 to 30 per cent of the alloy. The functions of the other elements will be described later. The manifold uses of nickel silver are largely due to its color, corrosion resistance, ease of casting, fabrication, joining and rather moderate cost. In many instances the alloy is finished by grinding and polishing while in others it may be finished with a silver or nickel plus chromium plate. Electroplates applied to a nickel silver base behave more satisfactorily than those applied to the softer and less resistant alloys, and owing to the white color of the underlying metal the article will retain a pleasing appearance despite local failures of the plating.

The rotary gas fired reheating furnace used by the American Zinc Oxide Co. at Columbus, Ohio for Therotarygasfiredreheatingfurnacerefining lead-free zinc oxide is described. The outstanding features of this operation are that the color of the zinc oxide is greatly improved, sulphur is eliminated, and cadmium arethatrecovered without densifying the product to an objectionable degree. IN 1919 Leland S. Wemple obtained a patent for a process of reheating zinc oxide wherein the "coarsening of grain due to excessive heating was avoided." He taught in his specification that if solid carbonaceous material, such as lamp black, was added to the zinc oxide in proper amounts prior to reheating, objectionable sulphur compounds could be removed and the color would accordingly be improved and no objectionable densification would occur because of the relatively low temperature required. The situation that made this invention imperative was the newly opened zinc oxide plant of the American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Co. in Hills-boro, Ill. This was one of the early Western Type American Process zinc oxide operations. Characteristic of all of these early Western operations using Tri-State and Western ores was the great difficulty encountered in obtaining a product low enough in sulphur to compete with the Eastern Type American Process zinc oxides which were made from ores containing very low sulphur percentages. Wemple demonstrated that the refining process of his invention produced a superior color and although this was true and a most welcome feature, the primary purpose of the early refining operations at Hillsboro was to reduce substantially the high sulphur content of the crude zinc oxide. Although many and varied attempts had been made for refining zinc oxide none of the processes had a commercial history of any consequence until Wemple&apos;s invention became standard practice for the American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Co. in 1919 and their operations have been unique in that substantially all of their lead-free zinc oxide has been reheated since the first installation at Hillsboro. This process has become known in the industry as refining. The furnace developed by Wemple and continued in use by the company from 1919 until 1943 was unusual and merits some consideration by way of review in this paper. The furnace was essentially a double hearth coal-fired muffle furnace with a mechanical raking system consisting of a central shaft supporting six rabble arms in each muffle. The untreated or "crude" zinc oxide was fed onto the outer rim of the top muffle, moved to the center where it dropped to the lower muffle and progressed to the outer rim where it was discharged into an alloy screw conveyor. The retention in this furnace was extremely short, about 5 min, and the shallow zinc oxide bed on the hearths of the muffles was being continuously turned by the fast moving rabbles. Soft coal was burned on the grates below the lower muffle and the long yellow flame necessary to carry the heat around both muffles resulted in a very inefficient combustion of the fuel. The temperature of the top of the lower muffle seldom exceeded 65 °C although the oxide itself often reached 700°C before discharge. The capacity of this furnace was approximately 1/2 ton per hr. In our plant at Columbus it was necessary to keep four of these furnaces running in parallel to take care of the production because, as mentioned above, every pound of zinc oxide produced during these 24 yr passed through one of these refining furnaces. An essential part of this refining operation was the use of carbonaceous material admixed with the zinc oxide fed to the furnaces. Between 1 and 2 pct of a bran produced in the processing of cotton seed was added to all zinc oxide charged to the furnaces. The bran ignited on the top hearth and was still burning when the charge fell from the top hearth to the bottom hearth making a cascade of sparks. The rapid turning of the zinc oxide caused these particles of bran to flash on the hearths behind each rabble; but the combustion, of necessity, had to be complete by the time the charge reached the outer rim of the bottom hearth, otherwise the finished product would be contaminated with the charred particles of bran which would give the zinc oxide an unsatisfactory color. Although this operation was initiated to reduce objectionable sulphur percentages, as time went on new properties of the product were appreciated which made advisable continuing the refining process long after other methods of sulphur reduction became known in the industry. The particle size and particle size distribution, the absence of colloidal fines and perhaps a unique surface condition gave this product an outstanding performance when used in paints. The Wemple furnaces installed in Columbus in 1919 had to be rebuilt frequently and were extravagant in the use of fuel. The raking mechanism and the muffles required excessive maintenance expense and as the furnaces wore out the problem arose whether to continue along this line or to explore the possibilities of obtaining similar or better results in the simpler and more commonly used rotary furnace. Chemical and physical properties of thiol collectors are re-examined to compare the prospects,of heavy metal-thiolate or disulphide surface reaction products acting as actual collector species. Recent evidences for the existence and importance of each of these types of adsorbed species on sulphide minerals are also discussed. A conclusion is reached that partial coverage by chemisorbed heavy metal thiolate is often sufficient to confer practical levels of hydrophobicity and floatability. Only on a few highly conducting and "noble" sulphides does adsorbed disulphide-type collector oxidation product appear to be significant.

The process of leaching silver ores with sodium hyposulphite is comparatively new, and published accounts of the details and losses of the process are as yet very few. The following account of a careful series of experiments to determine the actual loss in this process may therefore be acceptable to members of the Institute. The ore treated was highly calcareous, and the principal sulphide present was iron pyrites. Following is an analysis by Professor Price, of San Francisco, of the ore treated : Per cent. Treated 1000 pounds in a four-hearth reverberatory. 8.30 p.m.—Entered fourth hearth, remaining there one and onehalf hours; sulphur began to burn. 10 p.m.—Changed to third hearth; ore became red-hot half an hour after entering; the fireplace was kept almost destitute of fuel. 2.30 A.M.—Changed to second hearth. Charge continued, giving off a large quantity of sulphurous fume; the fireplace was kept dark.

HOW much can the mine operator afford to spend on his coal burning boiler plant? The usual answer is as little as possible and still get the job done. Thus, attention must be focused on the spot where excessive costs are most likely to arise - the materials handling end of the job. Boiler plants consuming less than 30,000 tons of coal annually can be controlled to the point where costs for handling coal and ashes are under $1.00 per ton. There is a wide selection of coal and ash-handling systems that can be used in smaller boiler plants to provide labor savings and convenience required if management is to accept coal as fuel.

An experimental study is discussed of the state of strain, deformation and fracture around lined and unlined cylindrical cavities in rock under biaxial compressive static loading. The specimens were limestone plates 36 in. high, 24 in. wide and 3 in. thick with a 4 in. diameter hole unlined or lined with hydrostone and aluminum liners. The ratio of horizontal to vertical applied stress was one-third. Experimental techniques used were strain gages, differential transformers and photoelastic coatings. Strain distributions were plotted along the horizontal axis of symmetry for various levels of applied stress. The agreement with theory was good at low stress levels but appreciable deviations occurred at higher levels and near the hole. The experimental strain concentration factor was nearly the same, slightly higher and appreciably higher than the theoretical value for the hydrostone-lined, unlined and aluminum-lined specimens, respectively. Failure modes were splitting along a vertical plane for the unlined and hydrostone-fined specimens, compressive (shear) failure for one unlined specimen and splitting with radial cracking for the aluminum-lined specimen. In the latter, a maximum tensile stress of more than three times the uniaxial tensile strength existed at the interface with the liner at the time of fracture,

The efficiency of operation of a fixed-bed adsorption unit is infEuenced both by the absolute adsorption capacity of the bed and by the rate of adsorption. This paper describer studies of adsorption rate which were conducted in an experimental unit designed such that conditions existing in the treatment of high-pressure natural-gas mixtures could be duplicated. Variables investigated included pressure, temperature, gas composition, adsorbent particle size, depth of packed bed and gas velocity. The adequacy of a simplified mathematical model for predicting the observed phenomena was tested. A correlation is preserited which relates adsorption rate to the process variables stlldied. This correlation is useful in combination with the matheinatical model. INTRODUCTION Of the techniques available for contacting adsorbent particles with fluid streams to be treated, fixed-bed adsorption columns offer definite advantages in simplicity and ease of operation. As a result, they are often used in preference to others for such petroleum industry applications as dehydration and purification of natural gas and hydrocarbon recovery. Fixed-bed adsorption units usually consist of two or more towers filled with a desired adsorbent and operated in a cyclic manner. While one is being used to process the main flow stream, the others are undergoing regeneration to remove the adsorbed phase. When the tower on stream becomes saturated with the preferentially adsorbed material, the roles of the towers are switched, and the freshly regenerated tower is placed on stream. Cacle duration is determined by the bed capacity under the process conditions and by the flow rate through the bed. The sharpness of separation which can be effected is a function of both the absolute capacity of the bed and the rate of adsorption in the bed. The effect of rate for a particular set of conditions is evidenced by the sharpness or diffuse-ness of the adsorption front as it advances through the bed. Since data needed for design of adsorption units to treat high-pressure natural-gas systems were not available, an experimental program was designed to investigate the effects of different variables upon adsorption rate in fixed beds. In the present paper, effects of gas composition, column length, temperature, pressure, adsorbent particle size and flow rate (actual linear flow rate of the gas) are shown, and utility of a simplified mathematical model for describing the process is discussed. As gas enters the top of a cool, clean bed of adsorbent, preferentially adsorbed materials are stripped from the main flow stream by the uppermost particle layers. As these layers become saturated with a particular component, new supplies of this component are carried further down the column until fresh adsorbent is encountered. An adsorption wave thus moves through the column as material is supplied to saturate succeeding elements of the bed. Adsorption from a Multicomponent gas stream occurs as a succession of such moving waves corresponding to the different components in the gas. The leading edge of an adsorption wave for a component of a natural-gas stream moving through a bed of a common commercial adsorbent such as silica gel would be sharp but for the influence of certain broadening fac tors. These factors include a nonuniform velocity profile in the bed, longitudinal dispersion or mixing in the main gas stream, and the time required for a molecule to migrate from the main gas stream and be adsorbed at a site within the body of an adsorbent particle. If packing is uniform and the ratio of column to particle diameter is greater than approximately 15:1, the first factor is relatively unimportant&apos; Longitudinal mixing is of importance only for the case of moderately high mass transfer with extremely slow flow rates.&apos; The sharpness of an adsorption front, therefore, is, primarily a function of the rate of adsorption or the time required to saturate a particle of zdsorbent. Two methods for defining adsorption rate are used in this work. The first is a normalized or relative rate which describes the rate of saturation of a differential element of the packed bed. This can be measured by observing the time required for the concentration of the preferentially adsorbed material in the effluent gas from the bed to rise from zero to a value equal to that in the inlet gas stream. The second definition describes the absolute rate of mass transfer from the gaseous to the adsorbed phase. This definition is used in a mathematical description of the adsorption process. If the concentration of a component in the gas strcam leaving an adsorption column is measured and plotted as a function of time, a curve such as that shown in Fig. I results. It is seen that for a period of time the effluent gas is devoid of the component under consideration. As the bed approaches saturation, a small percentage of this material will appear in the effluent gas. The technology of nickel-activated sintering of tungsten powder has been successfully applied to the densification of plasma-sprayed tungsten. Nickel was added by infiltration in a zinc solution followed by evaporation of the solvent. After sintering one hour at 1300°C density 95 pct of theoretical and transverse rupture strength of 74,000 psi were obtained. Shrinkage was found to be anisotropic and the mechanism of densification was comparable to that found in the nickel-activated sintering of tungsten powder. 1 HE use of a plasma spray gun for the fabrication of massive tungsten parts has become increasingly interesting. Applications now exist where a deposit in the as-sprayed condition is satisfactory. However, these deposits are generally characterized by a lamellar anisotropic microstructure containing 15 pct porosity of which, typically, two-thirds is open to the surface. Mechanically, the as-sprayed deposits fail at relatively low stress levels with a biscuit-like fracture. As a result of these problems the possibility of improving structure and strength by sintering treatments subsequent to spraying is particularly attractive. Preferably this sintering treatment should be adaptable to large bodies of sprayed metal. The similarity between the as-sprayed tungsten structure and that of a powder compact suggests that the relatively low-temperature activated sintering technique1 might be profitably employed in the densification of plasma-sprayed tungsten. It was the purpose of the present investigation to develop a technique for introducing the nickel-activating agent into the sprayed structure, to evaluate the amount and mechanism of densification obtained as a function of time and temperature, and to obtain an indication of the relative strength before and after sintering. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Powder used for spraying was purchased from the Wah Chang Corp. in several size fractions ranging from an average size of 4 to 150 . These powders were sized further for an explicit study of the influence of average feed size on densification. All powders were dried at 200°C before use. Spraying was accomplished with a Plasma Flame unit manufactured by Thermal Dynamics Corp. Several modifications of the unit were helpful in conducting the investigation. A variable speed auger feed mechanism coupled with the carrier gas mecha nism facilitated the use of fine particle sizes. A coil of ten turns of copper tubing in series with the arc power and concentrically would around the nozzle improved nozzle life and extended the range of operating currents available. The function of the auxiliary coil was to cause the arc to spin and to prevent impingement at only one point in the nozzle. Normally air sprayed deposits were made with an arc maintained at 400 amp at 50 to 70 v. The arc was blown by a gas mixture containing from 5 pct H, 95 pct N for the finest powder feed sizes ranging to 20 pct H, 80 pct N for the coarsest size. The flow rate was maintained at 100 cu ft per hr NTP through a nozzle of 0.25 in. ID. When apraying in air, the powder stream was directed toward an aluminum substrate for ease of mechanical removal of the deposit. The substrate was cooled by diverting the plasma flame with an air jet, and a second jet was directed on the deposit surface. In this configuration a gun-to-work distance of 2 to 3 in. was found to be satisfactory. Fig. 1 represents a typical as-sprayed deposit micro-structure. Laboratory studies of protective atmosphere spraying were carried out in cylindrical chamber 8 in. in diam by 18 in. in length. In operating the nozzle attached to such a chamber, particular care was required to avoid nozzle burn out due to reduced gas flow. The structure and density of the chamber sprayed deposits varied over wide ranges depending on substrate temperature. For the purposes of this investigation, flat deposits were made approximately 2 in. sq by 3/8 in. thick. From these deposits individual samples were cut an ground to a rectangular shape typically 1 1/2 in. by 1/8 in. sq such that the long dimension was perpendicular to the spraying direction. For the study of shrinkage anisotropy deposits up to one inch thick were produced. From these, rectangular samples were cut having a longer dimension parallel to the spraying axis. Prior to the addition of activating agent, the samples were deoxidized in hydrogen at 800°C for 20 min. No detectable dimensional or microstructural change was observed after this treatment. At the request of a committee of the Engineering Division,&apos; National Research Council, a study of the properties of boiler plate at various temperatures up to about 900&apos; F. (482" C.) has been instigated. The following is a report of preliminary tests made on two grades of 1/2-in. plate and includes a description of the apparatus used in the determination of the proportional limit. Detailed reference to- the many published investigations in connection with the properties of steel at various temperatures will be omitted from this report. Suffice to state that results obtained for variation in tensile strength, elongation, and reduction in area with temperature are in substantial agreement with the effects now generally considered to be correct. Comparison of proportional limit values with results obtained by other investigators will be found in the conclusions. Materials Used The steels tested were $1/2-in. METALLURGISTS are properly interested in papers dealing with subjects ranging from the theories of the metallic state to very practical details on the use of metals. A review of theoretical metallurgy naturally excludes papers concerned with the usefulness of metals and limits itself to those concerned purely with the science of metals. Even in this more limited field the reviewer is confronted with thousands of papers dealing with facts and theories of metallic behavior, from which he can select only a few hundred. The selection is necessarily highly arbitrary. Certain classes of papers definitely fall within the scope of this review. Thus, papers on the deformation of metals, on the structure of alloys, on recrystallization, to select only a few, are fully represented. Other subjects, which verge on what is generally accepted as the science of metals, such as the magnetic properties of metals, the less familiar electrical properties and theories, adsorption of gases by metal surfaces, and the like, are treated scantily. Particular attention is given to reviews of subjects that fall with in the groups chosen; in a summary such as this, which is largely in the nature of a progress report, capably written reviews are of importance, particularly since the monograph and text book literature is so meager in this field.

THE GREAT advances made in mechanical engineering during recent years through the use of alloy steels, as illustrated by the development of the airplane and automobile, may be ascribed primarily to the application of nickel as an alloying element. The ternary system iron-carbon-nickel has a wide industrial application and forms, further; the fundamental basis of the even greater class of the widely used quarternary steels such as nickel-chromium, nickel-silicon, and nickel-vanadium. As is not uncommon with such cases of virile growth in an industry, the application of the alloy steel in a largely empirical manner has outstripped its scientific development so that a fertile field for metallographic research still remains. In this field, the basic nickel steels require first consideration and are the subject of the present investigation, which is offered as a preliminary to the study of the more complex alloys of industrial importance. Of the principal tools of metallography-microscopic examination, determination of -mechanical properties, and thermal analysis-the last has developed much more slowly in its application to industrial needs so that the situation often exists that heat treatment operations are based on empirically determined temperatures; that is, temperatures determined without regard to the actual transformation characteristics of the alloy. This situation is undesirable as there is no uniform standard for comparison of results. It is due, outside the usual difficulties involved in temperature measurements, to the pioneer character- of much of the published work; to the lack of definiteness of the Ac2 transformation,1 particularly in low-carbon steels; to the failure to define operating conditions completely; and to the paucity of information correlating thermal characteristics with results of heat treatment.
