No one would maintain that all ore deposits or all deposits of useful minerals have been formed by the same processes. Generally they have originated by special processes of concentration but these may be of many different kinds. Some deposits have their origin in chemical or biochemical processes of concentration in rivers, lakes or seas, others, developed on land by, means of chemical reactions of surface waters on various forms of rocks. Certain insoluble substances remained behind; others were dissolved and precipitated in favorable places. This action -proceeded in the realm of the oxidizing surface waters or in the deeper zones to which the waters from the surface could find their way. Examples of the latter kind may be found in the extensive copper and vanadium deposits of some sedimentary beds or in the lead and zinc deposits of certain broad limestone strata. In these instances the evidence for any other mode of origin would seem to be very weak indeed.1 Nor does it seem possible to deny that circulating waters may form deposits of the more common metals along fissures after having dissolved many constituents from paths traversed. Another very large class has been formed by magnetic processes of concentration. The last 40 years have been a period of intense activity in. the investigation and description of a vast number of deposits; all modern methods have been employed and the result is an accumulation of data, difficult or impossible to master. It has been a period similar to that in petrography. The generalizations, the able deductions have lagged behind. Evidently several geologists have become weary of this "infinite detail" and a mistrust of the microscope seems to have. arisen. In the present work, experiments determined the effect of the order-disorder reaction near the Fe,Al composition on the magnetic anisotropy and magnetostriction of single crystals: A material which is more difficult to magnetize in one direction than in another is anisotropic, that is, the ease with which ferromagnetic materials may be magnetized in different crystallographic directions determines the anisotropy. Two investigators have estimated the anisotropy of the aluminum iron alloys from poly-crystalline data;1,2 however, these estimates should not be considered to be reliable. Siege1 made two accurate measurements of the first anisotropy constant* from single crystals of 4.0 wt pct aluminum sotropy throughout the ferromagnetic aluminum iron system have been described. These results were obtained from single crystals which were slowly cooled and, hence, ordered near the Fe3Al composition.4 Magnetostriction is the change in length per unit length resulting from applying a magnetic field to a ferromagnetic material. For the purpose of this report, the saturation magnetostriction was measured. This is the maximum change in length per unit length resulting from an applied magnetic field large enough to saturate the material in a given direction. This magnetostriction has been determined for single crystals of the ferromagnetic aluminum-iron system.' The crystals near Fe3Al were also ordered. PREPARATION AND TREATMENT OF SINGLE CRYSTALS Single crystal bars were grown from the melt.' The raw materials for these crystals were iron and aluminum of 99.9 and 99.99 pct purity, respectively. The Tri-State zinc-lead mining district embraces an extensive area, including the northeastern part of Ottawa County, Oklahoma, the southeastern part of Cherokee County, Kansas, and adjacent portions of Missouri, mainly in Jasper County. The Oklahoma-Kansas portion of the district, in the vicinity of Picher, Okla., has been the principal producing area since 1917, and the present milling practice in that section is the subject of this paper. This district is the largest zinc-producing field in the United States. In 1926 it produced 55 per cent of the nation's zinc and 15 per cent of its lead, and in 1933 it produced 35 per cent of the zinc and 10 per cent of the lead. From 1842 to 1933, inclusive, the total output of the district was 18 1/2 million tons of zinc and lead concentrates valued at 818 million dollars. Of this production, the Oklahoma-Kansas, or Picher, field yielded over 9 million tons valued at over 400 million dollars. Mining operations in the Oklahoma-Kansas field near Picher and Baxter Springs began in 1915. The mills built it that time consisted merely of gravity concentration plants employing jigs and tables and the same flow sheets as had proved satisfactory with the free-milling ores such as were mined in the Joplin-Webb City fields in Missouri. The Kansas-Oklahoma ores proved to be much richer but also more refractory to treatment than those in the Joplin area, and contained a considerable percentage of zinc mineral not freed by the amount of crushing usually practiced in preparing the ores for jigging. Thus the old Joplin type of mill, with its usual two or four jigs and a few tables, proved inadequate and resulted in excessive tailings losses sometimes as high as 50 per cent

There are a number of complex factors that influence the effectiveness of anchorage to maintain tension in rock bolts. However, a plastic analysis of the anchorage site employing certain simplifying assumptions with application of the Mohr-Coulomb criterion appears to explain the observed phenomena. Such an analysis has been made and a correlation sought with field and laboratory tests. Field tests were made in an anthracite mine in eastern Pennsylvania and included pull tests and long-term tests of a variety of anchorage devices in two basic lengths, 30 and 42 in. in two widely differing seams. Performance is reviewed for wedge, expansion shell, and resin anchorage. Laboratory tests duplicated many of the field conditions but in addition compared the performance of shells with normal and reversed serrations. This performance was compared with the predicted results from the plastic analysis. One of the major problems in conducting long-term underground tests is the selection of suitable instrumentation. All installed bolts were fitted with spherical and hardened washers to insure the best possible torque wrench readings. In addition, commercially available load cells were used. Finally, the performance of a specially developed strain-gage-equipped ring cell is viewed. Rock bolting as a method of support continues to increase with applications in many other industries in addition to mining. Nevertheless, with nearly 55,000,000 roof bolts installed in coal mines alone last year, this remains as the single greatest use. While bolts have frequently supported ground where conventional timbering could not, there are relatively few design criteria; and trial-and-error procedures prevail. Furthermore, there has been a lag in development of suitable instrumentation that is simple to install and read out, sensitive, durable, reliable, safe, and economical in evaluating the effectiveness of a bolt over long periods of time. Therefore, the pull test continues to be the most popular method of evaluating the applicability of a certain type of roof bolt under specific installation conditions. At The Pennsylvania State University in the Dept. of Mining, research has been conducted for a number of years to measure bleed off in carefully controlled laboratory experiments as well as in underground investigations."-' Unfortunately, most of the instrumentation developed has been primarily suitable only for research purposes, not possessing all of the aforementioned characteristics desirable for routine underground use. Other groups also have met with restricted success. Therefore, while relatively crude, the torque wrench continues to remain as the most widely used load measuring device. While both field and laboratory tests continue to be con- ducted, analytical analyses are attempted to discover the more important design parameters in order that more efficient anchorage might be devised. Bolts are being used for a greater variety of purposes in mining. Suspending wire sideframe belt conveyors from roof bolts is a common application. The suspension of a monorail transportation system presents yet another. One such system has just been installed in a recently reopened anthracite mine and is presently being evaluated under production conditions. Preliminary studies revealed that a considerable cost reduction was possible by suspending the monorail on bolts anchored in the top. The monorail was to be installed under two widely differing conditions—a competent sandstone above the Buck Mountain seam and a softer shale top above the Skidmore. The type of anchorage device, length of bolt, and long-term performance, consistent with economy and safety, had to be established for the installation once the decision was made to suspend the system on rock bolts. This paper describes some of the testing procedures leading to a final selection. Theoretical Analysis of Expansion Shell Anchorage A detailed look at an expansion shell assembly might shed some light on the factors involved in the design of a suitable shell, Fig. 1. When a bolt is rotated, the tapered plug is forced downward, expanding the leaves laterally to grip the sides of the hole. Two friction surfaces are present: (1) the interface of the plug and leaf and (2) the interface between leaf and rock. The relationships of these friction planes, geometry of expansion shell, and properties of the rock are important in the design of an expansion shell. Therefore, an analysis assuming the rock to behave as a rigid plastic material with its yield governed by the Mohr-Coulomb criterion was made." Furthermore, the effect of friction between the leaf and rock produced by serrations was analyzed.

This paper covers an investigation of the magnetic roasting characteristics of several iron ores when treated in the form of small pebbles (1/8" to 1/2" in size), and in the form of balled fines. The roasting treatment was carried out with apparatus capable of very close control of time, temperature, face velocity, and per cent combustible in the reaction gas. The effect of rapid initial heating was not studied although it is believed that this has a major effect on the results when processing solid pebbles. The test equipment is a fixed bed type, with such a wide range of gas velocities, temperature, combustible content and etc., that the results obtained can be made to approximate those from various commercial roasting processes. The data presented in this report covers reaction rates, effect of processing variables on silica in the concentrate, flow resistance of beds, and to a limited extent, the effect of particle size. The work is far from complete and raises many more problems than it gives answers for. We believe, however, that much of the information will be useful to those engaged in investigation of magnetic roasting processes. We measured the time required for various degrees of completion of the reaction of hematite to magnetite, for finely pound material in balled form and for carefully sized crushed ore. Measurements were made for a variety of Minnesota and Labrador ores. This report covers an ore requiring fine ginding (-325 M) for liberation (Lower Kevin) and an ore requiring coarser grinding (-100 M) for liberation (Upper Olson). These ores represent approximately the range of characteristics for a group in the west end of the Mesabi Range. Our data shows that the reaction rate is very fast for the finely ground material and that tests are readily reproducible. The reaction rate of the larger size material, in the range of 1/8" to 1/2", is much slower and the results more erratic. We found that for the ores tested, the percentage of silica in the Davis tube magnetic concentrate was a function of iron recovery. Normally the concentrate had a low and relatively uniform percentage of silica up to a critical value of recovery. Above this critical recovery value the percentage of silica increased very rapidly. For example, for one particular ore roasted in the form of 3/8" diameter balls made from -28 mesh fines, the silica remained at about 7% to 8% until the recovery exceeded about 93%. Increasing the recovery beyond 93% resulted in over 25% silica with the additional recovery. The degree of conversion of hematite to magnetite (% completion of roast) required to obtain 93% recovery for balled material, varied inversely with the gas flow rate. Percentage silica in the concentrate resulting from roasting 3/16" and 1/2" solid material was relatively erratic. However, for varying degrees of iron recovery the lowest silica percentages corresponded to those obtainable when roasting fines. It is thought the probable reason for the erratic values was the variation in shattering or cracking of the pebbles during initial heating and roasting. There is some indication that very fast initial heating will greatly increase the permeability of the individual particles of ore to gas flow so that the reaction rate for coarse sizes will approach that obtainable with balled fine material.

SAND and gravel are unconsolidated granular materials resulting from the natural disintegration of rocks. The two materials nearly al- ways occur together, variably proportioned in widely available de- posits. A commercial sand comprises the fine granular material, usually less than f in. in diameter (ASTM Designation C58-28), and gravel consists of the coarse, granular material larger than sand (ASTM Designation C125-46T). Gravel falls within the range of 1/4 in. and a top size usually of 3 ½ in. Chemical definition is impossible. Sand and gravel are always of secondary origin. They were formed from various massive rocks through the action of chemical and mechanical forces; then transported, abraded, washed, sorted, and classified by streams, glaciers, waves, or winds, to be redeposited in beds as they are found. Chief disintegrating forces in the reduction of rocks into granular particles were frost, rain, the dissolving action of acid and alkaline ground waters, the mechanical action of streams and waves, and the action of glaciers. Method of formation and deposition have imparted physical properties to sands and gravels that largely determine the commercial value of the materials for particular use and influence the manner of exploitation. In the early days of the commercial industry, purchasing specifications were relatively lenient but in. the past decade much more rigid quality requirements have had to be met for acceptance by all classes of purchasers. The trend to further severity in requirements is a challenge to the industry that commands full knowledge of the nature of raw materials at hand and skillful application of processing into commercial products. OUTCROPS of gypsum rock near the present site of the city of Gland Rapids, Mich., were known to fur traders early in the nineteenth century. However, the deposits seemed without value and were not worked for some time. So far as cat1 be learned, Michigan gyp- sum was first used by a plasterer who settled in Grand Rapids in 1834 as a member of its fourteenth white family. In building a house for one of the early traders, be used some otnamental stucco mouldings manufactured from the local gypsum deposits for decorations in the gables and around some circular windows. The gypsum was broken out with a hammer, ground in an Indian corn mill, and burlled in a caulclron kettle,. After two attempts, the ornaments were successfully set, and remained on the house until it was destroyed by fire in 1850.

This study was undertaken primarily to determine the reasons for certain varia-tions in the soundness of gravel aggregate taken from a number of widely separated points on the Tennessee River. Under laboratory tests, concrete made with these various aggregates it some cases exhibited marked differences in specific gravity, crushing strength and durability. Gravel was studied in detail from Chattanooga to the mouth of the river and to a lesser extent from Chattanooga to Knoxville. The causes of variation were determined, and variational curves were constructed, which accurately predict the composition of aggregate at any point on the river and therefore its relative suitability for use in concrete. The aggregate at any point is suited for making sound concrete; the variance of suitability is due to varying percentages of sandstone and weathered material, which are less sound than other constituents.

These notes are submitted, not as a discussion of the modern practice of electrolytic-copper refining, but as the record of a refinery that was among the pioneers in the field and that is to-day, and has been for 17 years, operating under conditions not to be found in any similar plant in the country. I refer to the current density, which is at least 60 per cent. higher than that regularly employed elsewhere, and to the fact that the anodes treated are the direct product of the converter rather than of the reverberatory furnace. The writer has no knowledge of any other refinery treating anodes of this character. II. History. This refinery, now one of the oldest plants of its kind operating in this country, was built in 1892 by the Boston & Montana Consolidated Copper & Silver Mining CO. to refine the product of its Great Falls reduction works. The estimated capacity of the plant as designed was 65,000 lb. of cathodes per day at a current density of 16 amperes per square foot.

INTRODUCTION by F. R. ZACHAR and A. G. GILBERT Coal producers are not only faced with the problems of mining coal, but must also decide to what extent they can invest capital and what operating and maintenance expense they can afford, after mining, to market their product in sufficient volume and at a reasonable profit. Regardless of whether the operator is contemplating a new operation or merely considering expanding present facilities, market requirements, ability to make a product meeting requirements, probable costs and possible future changes in raw coal or finished product must be considered. In addition, such items as flow sheet, structural designs, storage facilities, etc, must be examined individually and collectively. In estimating preparation costs to meet predetermined market specifications, the operator must calculate the economics of present preparation practices to anticipate the increase to total production which results when the quality of the finished product is increased. The consumers of coal are continually seeking to obtain the best and most adaptable product for their money. Regardless of whether coal is used for coking, industrial requirements, electric power generation, domestic fuel or for other purposes, it will be scrutinized from such standpoints as delivered cost, suitability for utilization in certain equipment, ease of ash disposal, adaptability to material handling system plans and its potential for generating dust problems. Utilities, due to large capacity volume requirements, are generally in a position to select coal that will result in the lowest over-all cost per million Btu. Freight costs, paid by the utility, are important and are given utmost consideration when a coal is under consideration. Steel companies, whether producing or purchasing coking coal, are continually seeking coal that will result in lowering the cost of pig iron production. Since it is usually necessary to clean to lower specific gravities, say 1.40, to turn out a product meeting metallurgical requirements, it follows that a high ash "middling" product is created. These low quality middlings do not command a good price. Therefore, unless the metallurgical coal can command sufficient realization to carry or subsidize the middlings, the operator may be ahead economically to prepare steam coal at a higher specific gravity. While the "unit-train" rate reductions have been helpful to the economy of the coal industry, the establishment of these rates has made mandatory the installation of storage and rapid car loading facilities at mines and plants shipping utility coal (see Chapter 15). The following description of the Alabama coal-,fields is taken (with slight omissions) from the report " On the Warrior CoalField, by Henry McCalley, A.M., C. and M. E., Assistant State Geologist:" The coal lands of Alabama are of the great coal basin of the Ohio, or of the great Appalachian coal-field, and are estimated at 8660 square miles. They formed one connected field prior to the great Appalachian revolution, when there was pushed up through them long, narrow, anticlinal ridges which have been denuded into the present well-known anticlinal valleys, and thus this great field has been divided up into three more or less distinct parts. These parts were named by Prof. Tuomey, in 1849, the Warrior, the Cahaba and the Coosa coal-fields, respectively, from the names of the rivers which drain them. They are of very unequal size, the Warrior, with an area of 7810 square miles, being nearly ten times as large as the other two combined, and about two-thirds as large as the coal-area of Great Britain. This Warrior field is the most northwestern of the three coal-fields of Alabama, and comprises all of the coal-measnres in Alabama, northwest of the Alabama Great Southern railroad, or all of those drained by the Warrior and Tennessee rivers. The greater part of this field, almost all of it away from the present railroad lines, has never received more than a surface-examination. Still, we have in the Warrior coal-field one of the richest coal-basins of this or any other country. As a whole, the Warrior coal-field is a broad, shallow, tray-shaped depression, sloping towards the southwest, and with its southwest end covered by a newer formation and its southeast side, especially, complicated by folds and fractures. As is the case with all of our Coal Measures. it is composed of a series of sandstones. conglomerates, shales, slates and coal-seams, with some little limestone at several horizontal positions, but contains no thick bed of this last rock like the Measures of Pennsylvania and other States. PREPARATION CONTROL IN UNDERGROUND MINING Selective Mining According to district Depending upon the particular geographic loca- tion or seam characteristics, modern raw coal preparation practices can be used to obtain improved product quality and uniformity. Nevertheless, certain coal markets may require only marginal quality while others may require very high quality, and these objectives may be sought by commencing the preparation of coal underground at the "working face." Under- ground preparation involves choosing those portions of the seam which can be cleaned to satisfy predetermined market requirements involving ( 1 ) maintenance of uniformity in chemical quality, (2) elimination of removable impurities, (3) control of sizes and size ratios, and (4) control of moisture. The methods employed to attain these objectives vary widely with the (1 ) seam under development, (2) mining equipment available, and (3) changing trends in the consuming markets. When a mining property is opened and development progresses from one section to another, the (1) petrography of the coal in the seam does not remain uniform, (2) character of roof and floor are subject to change, and (3) character and prevalence of mineral impurities are subject to considerable variation. The quality of coal shipped to market from any mine depends upon intelligent foresight, planning, execution, and supervision. Mining becomes a highly technical art. The quality of coal as determined by chemical and petrographic analysis is without question one of the most important considerations in the development and life of any coal-mining property. Variations in such proper- ties as volatile matter, ash, sulfur, Btu content, and petrography are of considerable interest, and to a limited extent so are such properties as phosphorous content, free swelling index, plasticity, hardness, pressure formation during coking, and ash composition. The maximum and minimum specifications of these characteristics as established by competitive market conditions place definite limits on the marketability of a coal.

Inflammability and crossing point apparatus were used to study the influence of increasing amounts oi such inerts as ash, fly-ash, pyrite, limestone and Portland cement with several pulverized bituminous coals. The results indicate that it requires large proportions of inerts to substantially suppress the ease of ignition. The ignition phase of the combustion of solid fuels has been under study periodically since 1900. With the advent of pulverized coal firing some 60 years ago, a technique now dominating the coal utilization field, the ignitibility characteristics have become increasingly important. Much of the early work was directed toward the prevention of coal dust explosions and improved mine safety rather than combustion. Many factors affecting ignitibility have been studied and numerous methods devised in an effort to measure the ignition temperature and these have been reviewed by other authors. A recent survey was made by Finney and Spicerl in 1959, so a discussion of previous work will be omitted. Despite these efforts, the initial stage of combustion, termed ignitibility, is still a little understood phenomenon. In fact, no ASTM method has been adopted for the calibration of this illusive property. The greatcr part of the literature on the plastic behavior of magnesium dates back to that active period of research in crystal mechanics immediately following the widespread preparation of isolated metallic crystals large enough for the application of conventional methods of mechanical testing. These investigations, performed on single crystals, revealed an analogy between zinc and magnesium with respect to their fundamental mode of deformation. in the operation of glide and twinning, respectively, on crystallographically similar planes. Mathewson and Phillips (1928)' by geometrical analysis identified the plane in magnesium as the twinning plane. Schiebold and Siebel (1931) confirmed this twinning planc, established the basal plane as the plane of slip, and a digonal axis I as the slip direction. They also rcported twin formation in a secondary role on the {IOI} plane. Schmid (1931)³ summarized and discussed the earlier evidence and presented the results of his own experiments on the effect of temperature and small amounts of soluble elements. From X-ray studies on extended wire single crystals, he concluded that slip along the basal plane in the direction of the digonal axis I closest to the stress direction was the sole slip system operating at atmospheric temperature. This conclusion was based on experiments with crystals of many different orientations relative to the stress axis. Special attention was directed to the basal plane and the digonal axis I, as the plane and direction of greatest atomic density. Determinations of resolved shear stress at the onset of plastic yielding-—i.e., the critical resolved shear stress—were also made; the average of these calculations showing 82.9 grams per sq. mm. This value varied only slightly up to 300°C. at which temperature it was found to decrease to 70.5 grams per sq. mm. The bath and the liquid metal in the aluw~inuw~ electrolytic cells are moving under the action of the Laplace forces. Consequently there are differences in level at the interface of the liquid. This phenomena is studied by means of a computer; the characteristics of the mathematical model used are presented with the results corresponding to two typical cases. This study gives a new and origi~zal interpretation of magnetic ej-jects; their action depends very closely on the hydraulic phenomenon which explain the sensibility of the cells to the slope and thickness of solid bath frozen around the pot. MAGNETIC effects produced in the electrolytic cells used for the production of aluminum are known to exist, a factor whose importance is well-known by producers through its influence on cell operation and output. In particular, these effects bring about movements in both the bath and metal as well as interface variations in level that are detrimental to sound electrolysis . A direct study of these effects by means of an experimental device would raise a number of problems particularly difficult not to say impossible to solve in the present state of techniques. It is for this reason that we had recourse to an electronic computer for working out the speed and pressure distribution within the liquid in the cells. We have assumed that all other possible causes for movement, such as thermal convection and evolution of gas at the anode, are acting without any connection with magnetic effects, and that consequently we may study each of these causes separately. A basic cause for magnetic effects lies in the presence of Laplace forces within the bath and metal. Electric current and magnetic field distribution have been calculated with the help of an electronic computer, and two communications about it have already been made to AIME.* 1) PRESENTATION OF THE MATHEMATICAL PATTERN In order to solve this problem, it was essential to assume a number of simplifying hypotheses with regard to both the geometry of the actual cells and the phenomena themselves. A first simplification consisted in assuming that the movements of the conducting liquid modify neither the electric currents nor the magnetic fields. In consideration of the magnitude of the values involved this assumption seemed accep-tible. 1.1) Finding the Equation of the Problem. The problem raised consisted in determining the flow of two viscous immiscible liquids with different densities subjected in a complex environment to gravity and Laplace forces. The greatcr part of the literature on the plastic behavior of magnesium dates back to that active period of research in crystal mechanics immediately following the widespread preparation of isolated metallic crystals large enough for the application of conventional methods of mechanical testing. These investigations, performed on single crystals, revealed an analogy between zinc and magnesium with respect to their fundamental mode of deformation. in the operation of glide and twinning, respectively, on crystallographically similar planes. Mathewson and Phillips (1928)' by geometrical analysis identified the plane in magnesium as the twinning plane. Schiebold and Siebel (1931) confirmed this twinning planc, established the basal plane as the plane of slip, and a digonal axis I as the slip direction. They also rcported twin formation in a secondary role on the {IOI} plane. Schmid (1931)³ summarized and discussed the earlier evidence and presented the results of his own experiments on the effect of temperature and small amounts of soluble elements. From X-ray studies on extended wire single crystals, he concluded that slip along the basal plane in the direction of the digonal axis I closest to the stress direction was the sole slip system operating at atmospheric temperature. This conclusion was based on experiments with crystals of many different orientations relative to the stress axis. Special attention was directed to the basal plane and the digonal axis I, as the plane and direction of greatest atomic density. Determinations of resolved shear stress at the onset of plastic yielding-—i.e., the critical resolved shear stress—were also made; the average of these calculations showing 82.9 grams per sq. mm. This value varied only slightly up to 300°C. at which temperature it was found to decrease to 70.5 grams per sq. mm. INTRODUCTION The regional characteristics of porphyry copper deposits in South America southward from Pantanos and Pegadorcito, Columbia, will be summarized. The age of formation of deposits spans the period from the Permian to the present. Where possible, the general characteristics and the individual structural features of the deposits are integrated into the plate tectonic model. Individual deposits cited in this chapter, located in Fig. 1, are the best known and most fully described, and form the Andean copper belt (Peterson, 1958). Smaller porphyry copper deposits fall both east and west of the line of large, high grade deposits (e.g., Chuquicamata and Toquepala) that make up the spine of this belt. Most of those smaller deposits (e.g., Mi Vida [Koukharsky and Mirre, 19761) are omitted from Fig. 1 and Tables 1 and 2, however. Neither the Andean orogen nor the individual deposits within it are as well de- scribed in the literature as are their counter- parts in the Cordilleran orogen of North America. Therefore, generalizations relying on regional geologic mapping, geophysics, and isotopic geochemistry lack details pertinent to this type of deposit in the Cordilleran orogen. The South American porphyry copper province has been described by Hollister ( 1974) to include most of the Andean orogen excepting the tin province of Bolivia. Porphyry copper deposits have not been commonly found within the tin belt, although copper-tin (e.g., San Rafael, Peru) and copper-tungsten (e.g., Llamuco, Chile) de- posits are known. James (1971) shows the depth to the Moho to be appreciably greater where the tin belt exists, but disclaims any genetic significance from the coincident appearance of the tin-tungsten province and the inhibition of porphyry copper development where the sialic crust thickens. Dates on tin mineralization in this belt (Clark and Farrar, 1973) are similar to some dates for porphyry copper mineralization known else- where in the Andean orogen. It seems that some mechanism is needed to explain the geographic separation of porphyry copper- molybdenum and simultaneous tin-tungsten- molybdenum metallization within the same tectonic system and appearing at similar distances from the trench. The thickened crust of the tin belt is one of the few known differences. Tables 1 and 2 list some of the most important porphyry copper deposits explored to date, but do not include Antaminas, Peru. or a number of other large skarn deposits

The electronic pickup tube is the image-to-video signal-converter or transducer in tele vision-like systems. Images may relate to visible light or IR excitation as in conventional TV systems, X-ray excitation as in some medical and production control applications, or electron excitation as in electron microscopy. The latter process is also important in some forms of light or X-ray sensitive pickup tubes as an intermediate step. In virtually all of these devices the image ends up as a stored charge pattern on a suitable target electrode and the video signal is created by periodically scanning the target with a low energy electron beam and removing the stored charge. In a major group of tubes radiation induced conductivity creates the charge pattern. In others, photoemission is used. In this paper an attempt is made to illuminate some of the device requirements placed on materials exhibiting radiation induced conductivity, some of the materials and techniques that are used, and the problems. The emphasis will be on visible light and IR sensitive targets although some attention will be given to X-ray and electron imaging. Photoconducting films as well as diode arrays will be discussed. ELECTRONIC pickup tubes find their greatest use in commercial, entertainment television, and in industrial and educational closed-circuit television. Video telephone systems, such as AT&T's PICTURE-PHONE System will become eventually the greatest user. Military use is also very important. Nevertheless the use of electronic pickup tubes in technology, science, and medicine is assuming ever greater relevance and demands the greatest diversity and perfection in the pickup tube art. Commercial television and closed-circuit television use requires visible light response, high resolution, low lag, and uniform response. Video telephone use requires the same plus extreme reliability, stability, and low cost. Military use emphasizes, in addition, sensitivity, IR response, and ruggedness. (Devices for far IR response will not be considered here.) The use of pickup tubes in medicine and biology emphasizes UV response for microscopy, X-ray response for radiology, and energetic electron response for electron microscopy. Astronomy and nuclear physics demands low light level response, storage ability, and resolution (here the tube is a successful replacement for film). The interested reader might profitably read Advances in Electronics and Electron Physics, vol. 12,' 16,2 and 22A3 and 22B4 for detailed discussion of the use, properties, and technology of electronic pickup tubes. In general, because of the importance of these uses, none of the above properties will be ignored. Nevertheless attention will be restricted to only those imaging devices, called pickup tubes, using a scanning electron beam to dissect the image with a resulting video signal for conventional CRT display. However pickup tubes have become so complex that many of them include components such as image in-tensifiers which would be normally excluded by this restriction. Thus some of the other imaging devices will not be ignored entirely. We will first review the fundamental elements and physical phenomena involved in modern electronic pickup tubes, then the relevant materials and some of the material problems and then an interesting goal yet to be achieved. REVIEW OF PICKUP TUBE PRINCIPLES In all modern television systems using pickup tubes there is an interval called the frame interval, during which the incoming radiation flux is allowed to produce a cumulative effect in the form of a stored charge pattern which is a replica of the radiation image, and a scan interval during which the stored charge pattern is converted into a video signal. The frame interval bears no fixed relation to the scan interval and may be shorter or longer. In conventional, real time television the scan interval including retrace is identical to the frame interval. Integration and storage is the key to the sensitivity of modern pickup tubes, in contrast to earlier tubes such as the image dissector. At equivalent light levels and without integration, the number of photons contributing to the video signal in the image dissector is lower by a factor approximating the number of picture elements in the displayed image, a number of order 10. Statistical fluctuations in the number of contributing photons represent a serious limitation to the attainable signal to noise ratio, resolution and contrast. As a result considerably greater light levels have to be used then in targets which integrate over the full frame period. Thus the crucial elements, common to all modern pickup tubes, are the charge storage surface and the scanning electron beam which is incident on the charge storage surface at very low energy. These are shown in Fig. 1(a). The charge storage insulator is generally very thin with a thickness of several microns or less. The surface of the insulator is held near cathode potential. The backplate potential is held at cathode potential or at a small positive voltage relative to cathode. The combination of storage insulator and backplate electrode is commonly called the "target".
