Grossmann's method1 for calculating the hardenability of steel from the composition and grain size has gained wide acceptance, and when properly used, has been well proved in practical application, both for estimating the hardenability of known compositions and for selecting compositions to meet known hardenability requirements. The Grossmann method uses as the criterion of hardenadility the "ideal critical diameter," DI, which is the' size round that will just harden to a structure of 50 per cent martensite at the center when given the theoretically fastest quench, or "ideal quench." The DI can be related to actual quenching practice if the severity of quench is known; or the DI can be correlated with hardenability as determined by the Jominy end-quench method.2 The effect on hardenability of each element present in a steel can be represented by a multiplying factor, the value of which depends on the amount of the element present and the degree of effectiveness of the particular element. (The value of the factor for a given carbon content varies with the grain size.) When the factors for all elements present in a steel have been determined from charts, they are multiplied, and the resultant product is the DI of the steel. The validity of Grossmann's scheme of multiplying factors has been confirmed in a number of other investigations.3-6 It can be appreciated that a certain desired level of hardenability can be obtained by adding chromium, molybdenum, nickel and vanadium to a base composition containing carbon, manganese, silicon and the usual impurities. Many of the ranges of hardenability used commercially can be obtained by any of the foregoing alloying elements used singly in the base composition. The same hardenability levels also can be obtained through use of any of a great number of multiple element combinations of these alloying elements. In this report a method will be presented for determining what one combination is the most efficient (based on hardenability and cost of added alloy) for a given level of hardenability. It should not be assumed from the emphasis given to hardenability, that hardenability is the only criterion for the selection of an alloy composition. Such properties as the hot-working characteristics, machinability, carburizing characteristics, amount of distortion during quenching and the retention of austenite may be considerations of importance in many applications. However, hardenability is one of the most important properties of an alloy steel and one that must be considered in almost all cases involving heat-treatment by quenching. Therefore, a method for determining the lowest-cost alloy combination should be of considerable value. Since the equation of continuity governing transient flow of gases through porous media cannot be integrated mathematically into a simple usable expression free from series terms, empirical and approximate equations have been advanced relating cumulative production and future production rates from gas reservoirs with time. In order to check the accuracy of these empirical equations and to obtain an insight into the initial conditions pertinent to the solution of the fundamental equation of continuity, experimental work has been conducted on a vertical 2-in. tube, 91.6 ft. high, packed with unconsolidated Wilcox sand. The results presented in graphical form show the accuracy of the approximate relations. Data from unsteady-flow runs on the 2-in. experimental tube are presented graphically, and are applied to obtain an equation for this specific case, and are offered as an aid in future investigations of this basic equation. The close agreement between equations calculated for steady-state flow and the experiments indicates that the decline of actual gas reservoirs may be treated by an application of these equations without serious error. Muskat1 has shown that the general differential equation is simply the La Place equation in P2. Direct solutions may be at once obtained. The unsteady state, on the other hand, is not analytically reducible. Since nearly all phenomena of practical interest in gas production involve flow in the unsteady rather than in the steady state, it has been necessary to derive approximate Solutions to the general equation. The validity of such approximations has not hitherto been adequately tested. In the experiments to be described a simple, closed, linear system is substituted for the real complex gas field. The general results, however, are independent of the geometry Of the system' The problem studied is the rate of production, and the accompanying variations in pressure, when one end of a linear porous system is opened to the atmosphere and permitted to produce to exhaustion. An approximate solution to the general differential equation, based upon the assumption of an "infinite series of steady states," is then applied to the results to determine the validity of this method of dealing with actual reservoirs. Theoretical Considerations The fundamental differential equation governing the flow of a gas through a Porous medium can be derived easily from the equation of continuity, Darcy's law, Boyle's law and a statement of the thermo-dynamic nature of the flow. DITHIOPHOSPHATE collectors are commonly used in the flotation of sulphide minerals. Studies of the interaction of a typical dithiophosphate collector with galena surfaces have been previously reported from these laboratories.'* These fundamental studies were carried out by employing phosphorus labeled radioactive dithiophosphate. Radioactivity determinations then could be used to measure readily and accurately the small concentrations of dithiophosphate that are present under conditions of flotation processes. Measurements were made on ground mineral, determining the amount sorbed indirectly from the concentrations in solution; and studies were also made with single crystals, determining the amount sorbed directly by counting the crystal surface. The rates, isotherms and reversibility characteristics of dithiophosphate sorption, the competition between phosphate and dithiophosphate for the mineral surface, and the exchange of sorbed dithiophosphate with dissolved dithiophosphate were studied. These studies have now been extended by sorption measurements in flotations with a Fagergren machine. For this work, the selective flotation of galena and sphalerite from quartz was chosen, using ammonium di-(sec-butyl) dithiophosphate as the collector, sodium cyanide as depressant for sphalerite, and copper sulphate as an activator for sphalerite. While the selective flotation of galena and sphalerite using a single dithiophosphate collector is not typical of flotation practice (two different collectors are generally used), it was found that a reasonably good separation could be obtained by using zinc sulphate with the sodium cyanide in the galena flotation and by cleaning the sphalerite concentrate or by carrying out the sphalerite flotation in an alkaline medium. Data of practical importance on the distribution of collector between the concentrates, tailings, and solutions were obtained, particularly with regard to the effect of copper sulphate and sodium cyanide. In addition to the selective flotation of galena and sphalerite from quartz, single flotations of galena-quartz and sphalerite-quartz mixtures were carried out, along with blank flotations on quartz alone. The present paper describes the results of these experiments. As in previous papers, the term sorption is used to designate uptake of collector by the mineral, without implication as to the nature of the processes involved. Experimental Materials: The mineral system was a ground synthetic mixture of galena, sphalerite, and quartz. The galena was from Galena, Kans., and contained 75 pct lead (theoretical 85.6 pct Pb for PbS); the sphalerite, from Ottowa County, Okla., contained 63 pct zinc (theoretical 67.2 pct Zn for ZnS); and the quartz from Klondike, Mo., analyzed as 99.97 pct SiO,. Sulphur labeled radioactive di-(sec-butyl) dithiophosphate was prepared from SS supplied by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory on allocation from the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The synthesis consisted of precipitating barium sulphate, reducing the barium sulphate to barium sulphide, acidifying to form hydrogen sulphide, and oxidizing the hydrogen sulphide with iodine to elemental sulphur.

PRESENT-DAY design of launders is essentially an art depending to a marked degree upon the experience of the designer, whose problem is that of determining the dimensions of a conduit that will transport the pulp within the physical limitations of the plant and in the most economical manner. This paper has been prepared in an effort to place launder design upon a more scientific basis. A method is developed from elementary principles and presented in a form that may be used directly by the designer in determining launder dimensions.. The equations that are developed are believed to represent an advance over older ones, in that they give due consideration to all the pertinent variables, either including them in the analysis or showing that they may be neglected within the limits of applicability of the equations. Experimental data from several sources are used in evaluating the coefficients that are not determined in the mathematical analysis. On the basis of the material presented, it is concluded that launders may be designed with a much greater degree of accuracy than previously believed possible, when due consideration is given to all the factors involved in the problem. However, a great deal of work still remains to be done in the laboratory before a complete answer to all the questions in launder design can be made available. HISTORY OF LAUNDER DESIGN Among the references1-11 are cited accounts of many experiments that have been conducted in an effort to advance the knowledge of the flow of liquid-solid mixtures in flumes and pipes. With three notable exceptions, this work was carried on in such a manner that the results have limited value in solving the general problem, since not all the pertinent variables were measured and controlled. The exceptions are found in the works of Blue,6 Gilbert,7 and Blatch,11 who exercised great care in controlling and measuring all the significant quantities involved in the experimentation. It is notable that much of the work done by men directly connected with the mineral industries1-4 lacks somewhat in completeness, owing apparently to preconceived notions concerning the factors that determine the flow. For example, many measurements on flow in pipes and flumes carrying liquid-solid mixtures determined only the slope and percentage of solids, with no mention of size of particles, depth of flow, roughness of channel or specific gravity of solids. Material in current handbooks8,9 and textbooks is based largely on the experimental work cited above. Although most discussions of the topic-include statements that the results to be obtained by using the data presented are limited by the fact that all variables have not been considered, it is

IT is the purpose of this paper to describe in detail the laboratory development and mill application of an unusual combination of flotation reagents employed in the concentrator of the Climax Molybdenum Co., on the Continental Divide, near Leadville, Lake County, Colorado. This development originated in an ore-dressing research laboratory maintained by Climax at the experimental plant of the Colorado School of Mines, which is staffed by men directly employed by the Climax Molybdenum Co. Mill-scale testing of laboratory developments was supervised by a representative from the testing laboratory, working in close cooperation with the operating staff at the mill. General milling practice at Climax is ably described in a paper by E. J. Duggan,1 mill superintendent. Other aspects of the Climax project have been described in papers by W. J. Coulter,2 by Butler, Vanderwilt and Henderson3 by Allen Kissock,4 and by Leo H. Glanville.5 Consequently, this paper will be confined to the metallurgical aspects of recent reagent developments, avoiding, as much as possible, repetition of material covered in these earlier publications. BRIEF HISTORY OF REAGENT PRACTICE AT CLIMAX Prior to the year 1937, the only reagents employed at Climax for froth production and collecting action in the flotation of molybdenite were steam-distilled or destructively distilled pine oils. The only exceptions to this practice were brief periods of mill testing, when reagents of various types were tried on an experimental basis. None of these experimental runs was sufficiently encouraging to justify its continuation as regular practice. Sodium, cyanide has been employed since the very early days of milling at Climax as an inhibiting agent for control of pyrite and chalcopyrite. Alkaline reagents such as lime or soda ash have been used in recent years to minimize the detrimental effect of iron salts on flotation of molybdenite. The presence of these harmful salts is attributed to the decomposition of fine metallics abraded from liners and balls in the first stage of regrinding rougher concentrate. Flint pebbles are used in subsequent regrinding, since alkaline reagents are not entirely adequate to offset the inhibiting effect of iron salts as the grind becomes progressively finer and the grade of concentrate progressively higher. Climax metallurgists were familiar at an early date with the use of petroleum products such as kerosene and gas oil as promoters of flotation of molybdenite. Charles C. Oliver6 discussed the use of pine oil and kerosene as early as 1920, in connection with the milling practice at Dominion Molybdenite Co., Quebec. Never theless, the early attempts to apply this knowledge in the Climax concentrator were complete failures. MANY theories have been advanced to explain the phenomena of elastic and plastic deformation. The object of this report is to present a mechanism for deformation, not radically differing from existing theories, but embodying certain principles and concepts of these theories. This proposed theory cannot be the complete answer to the age-old problem of deformation but it is believed that it will be a step further in the proper direction. The plastic properties of solids have recently been reviewed by Seitz and Read.1 Zener2 has reviewed and correlated the existing work on the anelasticity of metals. With these and othersa3,4,5 present theories of deformation are well-known. Of the many theories now extant, those receiving most attention have been proffered by Griffith,6 Becker,7 Smekal,8 Polanyi,9 Orowan10 and Taylor.11Although differing quite widely in details, these theories are based more or less on a common principle of flaws or dislocations that exist in the crystal lattice. The effect of stress concentrations surrounding a flaw or crack has been treated most recently by Fisher and Hollomon.12 The various authors differ as to the exact nature of the flaws or dislocations, the causes of their appearance, or the manner in which they initiate slip. All of the theories agree that the number of dislocations increases with progressing deformation. It is universally agreed that the shearing process is not a simple gliding of ideally perfect atomic lattice planes. It is also agreed that the "macroscopic process of gliding, or slip, is brought about by the spreading of a large number of locally initiated "glide steps" through the whole crystal. The occurrence of these "glide steps" is closely related to the presence of some kind of deviations from the "ideal" lattice structure, even in the undeformed crystal. These deviations are overcome "one at a time," in a manner of speaking, due to some stress-concentrating effect." PROPOSED THEORY Many solids show a continuously increasing deformation if subjected to a constant load of suitable magnitude in an extended range of temperature for a sufficient time. This deformation, or flow, may be said to be due, in general, to the tendency of the atoms or molecules in an elastically stressed body to readjust themselves in such a way that if the deformation were kept constant, a release of stress would take place. If rupture does not occur, this process of relaxation causes the rate of flow to obtain a final constant value, as shown in the curve (Fig I) obtained by Taylor and Quinney.14 In. this state the release of stress by relaxation exactly counterbalances the increase due to the elastic strain on the test pieces. .

IN the early fall of 1025, the writer was conducting, in the Ledoux and Co. labora-tory, New York, experiments directed to-ward ascertaining the effect on its impurity content when cathode copper was subjected to a current of various gases at an elevated temperature below the melting point. The apparatus consisted of a vertical I-in. dia. silica tube about 12 in. long, heated on the outside. The cathodes were broken to pass 3/8-in. mesh, and a current of various differ-ent gases was passed up through a 4-in. long column of these loose cathode particles in the vertical tube furnace. Temperature was maintained to 1500° to 1600°F. and the gas treatments lasted from 3 to 6 hr. The writer observed that whenever reducing gas (H2 or CO) was used, these cathode par-ticles stuck together at points of contact with each other. The cohesion was so marked and tenacious that an examination was made of the fractured surfaces, when cathode particles were broken from the cluster. Crystal growth was always found to have taken place across the surfaces where separate particles were in contact, but only after all oxides, sulphates, etc., had been completely removed. The idea of a possible new process was then conceived and was disclosed to A. M. Smoot (V. P. Ledoux and Co.) with intent to obtain his views. The first conception as given Smoot was "to gas-clean broken cathodes, put them in an extrusion press, solidify and extrude them at around 1500°F." Smoot's reaction, after a few moments considera-tion, was, "It looks perfectly all right to me." The writer and his assistants, W. H. Osborn and H. H. Stout, Jr., after confer-ring as to ways and means, decided to go ahead with preliminary laboratory experi-ments, which, it was thought, would move the new process from the possible to the probable. This program followed a course indicated by three basic considerations: I. Since brittle cathodes were often unin-tentionally produced, it seemed probable that the laws controlling this type of deposi-tion could be ascertained. 2. We had already proved the gas-clean-ing feature. 3. There remained to prove: whether a sound, homogeneous metal billet could be produced with crystal growth established over the entire surface of each individual particle in the billet; and, if so, what would be the physical properties? Osborn arranged with Columbia Uni-versity for conducting experiments in its research laboratory to prove or disprove the third item; Columbia assigned C. A. Phillipi, Jr. to assist in the project. A press with a cylinder 2 in. high and of I-in. dia. was used. It was surrounded and heated by a resistance coil of Nichrome wire. Broken tough cathodes were used.

At first glance this paper may seem unique among those comprising this symposium on designing for powder metallurgy, since it is evidently concerned with everything but Powder metallurgy. This paradox mill be at once resolved, however, when the real Purpose of the symposium meeting is understood—to present factually and objectively the things that can and cannot he done with powder-metallurgy methods, and especially to set forth with brutal frankness the limitations of Powder metallurgy, so that costly over-enthusiasm and misapplication may be prevented. Since much of powder metallurgy's future development (and many of its present disappointments) has been in competition with other and long-established methods of fabricating parts, it is easy to see that its true competitive possibilities in any given case cannot be accurately appraised without rudimentary knowledge of what the competition can do. This paper, therefore, presents a few reminders of things you all know—a background to be kept in mind as you examine the data on each of their specialties given by the authors of the papers that follow. From the standpoint of the design engineer powder metallurgy is often in Competition with one or more of the following: sand casting, die casting, permanent-mold casting, precision investment casting, ma- chined bar stock, screw-machine parts, cold-heading, drop-forging, and stamping and drawing. We will here briefly discuss each of these individually, and set forth so, rough (and therefore dangerous) generalizations about its competitive position, especially with respect to powder metallurgy. Sand Casting Sand-casting of small parts is sometimes an inexpensive method of manufacture, for its raw-material costs (i,e., for gray iron) are the lowest of the various methods and it involves the use of no tools and dies of jewelry quality. its design flexibility— that is, the ability to make complicated, cored and undercut parts in one piece—is about the highest of the competing processes and in this respect it can do many things that are impossible by powder metallurgy. For small castings its production rates may be higher, by using multi-impression molds, than can be achieved with parts of the same size by powder metallurgy. But its labor charges for melting, pouring, patternmaking and molding are comparatively high and the waste it entails in gates and risers is always considerable. Tolerances of sand castings are wide (+1/6 to 1/32 in- per in.) and where precision approaching that of powder metallurgy is required sand castings must be machined to final size, thus increasing their cost. Steel sand castings are more expensive and less precise than iron, and nonferrous the most costly of all.

HIGH temperature-high pressure techniques have long been used to great advantage in the organic chemical industry, the petroleum industry, and the paper industry. Only recently, however, have these methods been used to extract metals from their ores on a commercial scale. The Chemical Construction Corp., together with interested producers of nickel and cobalt, has done much to develop methods of producing nickel and cobalt powders by the use of high temperature-high pressure techniques.' The Howe Sound Co. is currently operating a plant near Salt Lake City in which the new Chemical Construction Corp. technique is applied to cobalt-arsenic sulfide concentrates. In this method the concentrates are leached in a dilute solution of sulfuric acid under air pressure at a high temperature. Near Edmonton, in Alberta, Canada, the Sherritt Gordon Co. is also using the new method in conjunction with its ammoniacal leach process.' National Lead Co., at Fredricktown, Mo., is operating a process similar to that of Howe Sound. In spite of the rapid growth of high temperature-high pressure hydrometallurgical processes, there has been very little work done on fundamental principles involved in this type of process. Conse- quently the literature lacks any significant data in this field. Oxidation of pyrite,3 sphalerite,4 galena," and recently molybdenite" in alkaline solutions has been reported to some extent. This investigation was initiated, therefore, to broaden the application of high temperature-high pressure hydrometallurgy and also to contribute some insight into the basic mechanisms of oxidation in an aqueous medium under these conditions. In addition to the immediate consequences of these processes much valuable information remains to be learned about fundamental reactions when they are carried out at temperatures and pressures slightly higher than those normally encountered. Leaching of molybdenite by alkaline solutions under oxygen pressure has recently been reported in the Russian literature by E. S. Usataya,6 ho found that leaching rate increased with an increase in the pH of the solution—the strongest effects being observed at a pH of 10—and also with an increase in temperature. Usataya also has reported the formation of a protective film on the surface of the molybdenite when the leaching solution was weakly alkaline, neutral, or acidic. He believes that this oxidation process explains the migration of Mo++ in the oxidation zones of molybdenite ore deposits and the subsequent impoverishment of the ores. Equipment: The high temperature-high pressure reaction unit used in this work was especially designed for kinetic studies of this nature, emphasis being placed on accuracy of measurement and precision of control. As details of the unit's construction and operation have been discussed elsewhere,' only basic features and principles of operation will be discussed at this point.

OLIVINE is considered a valuable potential source of metallic magnesium in the chloride electrolytic process. Treatment of olivine with hydrochloric acid can be carried out under conditions that prevent the formation of gelatinous silicic acid, which would inhibit the reaction by forming a covering around the ore particles. It is our hypothesis that the formation of gelatinous silicic acid is avoided by the dehydrating action of the magnesium chloride, which takes up water to form a series of hydrates and leaves the silicic acid in granular condition. Leaching serves to separate the magnesium chloride from the silicic acid and unattacked ore, which can be treated with fresh acid in successive steps until extraction is essentially complete. The leach solution can be purified by the addition of caustic magnesia and the precipitated impurities removed by decantation or filtration. The resulting magnesium chloride contains: Fe, less than 0.001 per cent; Mn, 0.012 per cent; Ni, none. Chlorinationt of olivine has two major defects: (I) a large part of the chlorine goes to form silicon and iron chlorides, (2) the anhydrous magnesium chloride is held by absorption in the finely divided silica. SUPPLY It is well known that olivine, a silicate of magnesium and iron, is present in large amounts in several localities in the United States. The largest deposits occur in the southeast and on the Pacific Coast.1 The southeastern deposits were surveyed by Lewis2 in 1896 and by Hunter3 in the period 1933-1940. It is estimated that high-grade olivine, conveniently located with regard to transportation and power, is present in excess of 230 million tons above local drainage level in western North Carolina and north Georgia. PREVIOUS TECHNICAL WORK In the past few years, olivine has attracted considerable attention in the refractory field. In the chemical processing industry, however, it has long been thought axiomatic that the cost of processing silicates is an economic barrier to their utilization, especially where more reactive minerals, such as carbonates, oxides or salts, are available. This attitude is not entirely justified in connection with olivine. Unlike most silicates, olivine is readily attacked by acids, chlorine and other reagents without resorting to fusion to break down the silicate structure. Olivine has been suggested as a raw material for making epsom salt by roasting with pyrites.4 Other processes include acid treatments and digestion with calcium chloride.6 Recently a small plant was built near Webster, N. C., for making epsom salt from olivine by treatment with sulphuric acid. This plant is now in commercial operation, producing approximately two tons per day. Olivine is also receiving attention from the fertilizer industry as an inexpensive source of soluble magnesium.

Attempts have been made to predict the volumetric and phase behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mix-turesl-6 but these methods have not been extended to the higher pressures and tem-peratures that are currently encountered in some producing formations. Furthermore, the methods of prediction at present avail-able have not been tested in a sufficient number of cases to ensure their applica-bility to all naturally occurring hydrocar-bon mixtures, even at the lower pressures and temperatures. For these reasons the behavior of a number of hydrocarbon mix-tures from a field in which the subsurface pressures are above 4500 lb. per sq. in.t and the temperatures are in the neighbor-hood of 250°F. was investigated. Method The objective of this program was to determine the volumetric behavior of ma-terial as it existed in the reservoir as a function of pressure, temperature and com-position. Strictly speaking, this cannot be accomplished in any simple fashion. How- ever, the variations in composition that are encountered within a producing reservoir may be approximated roughly by means of mixtures made up of two arbitrarily chosen constituents. Experience indicates that the liquid and gas phases from a high-pressure gas trap afford a simple source of material for this purpose. Throughout this discus-sion the samples of the gas phase and liquid phase from the production trap will be called the "trap-gas sample" and the "trap-liquid sample," respectively. The volumetric behavior of both of the trap samples was determined throughout the temperature interval between 100" and 250°F. at pressures up to 5000 lb. per sq. in. In addition, the behavior of eight different mixtures containing varying proportions of the two trap samples was studied throughout the same temperature and pressure intervals. The experimental results yielded information concerning the specific volume of the material as a function of pressure, temperature and the relative quantity of the trap samples. The relative amount of each of the paraffin hydrocarbons of lower molecular weight than n-hexane was determined for each of the trap samples. In addition, the specific weight, viscosity and average molecular weight of the hexanes-and-heavier fraction of the trap-liquid sample were determined as well as similar information for each of five fractions separated from this material by distillation. From these data the weight fractions of each of the components from methane through pentane were determined for the trap samples and eight systematically chosen mixtures. THE ores treated at the concentrating plant largely come from the blanket replacement deposits of the northeastern part of Hardin County, Illinois, and consist of complex mixtures of galena, sphalerite and fluorspar in a gangue of quartz, limestone and sandstone. The several minerals are so intimately intergrown that they are not liberated at the sizes usually treated by gravity concentration in the usual fluorspar plant. For this reason, an all-flotation method of concentration was developed in cooperation with the station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.1 This flotation separation made possible the commercial production of four concentrates: (I) lead concentrates, (2) zinc concentrates, (3) acid-grade fluorspar concentrates and (4) metallurgical-grade fluorspar concentrates.2,3 Although fluorspar had been floated in Canada in 1921 4 and a plant at Rosiclare had been floating fluorspar since March 1929, fluorspar flotation was given considerable impetus by the Mahoning developments, since some features of the separation were quickly adopted by other fluorspar companies. The Bureau of Mines5 reports that in the 10 years preceding 1938 only 50,552 tons of fluorspar flotation concentrates were produced in the United States. The rise from this almost nominal figure to 153,750 tons (largely acid grade) in one year (1944)6 is indicative of the activity in fluorspar flotation occasioned by the war. The industry thus proved to be in a position to expand and keep up reasonably well with the requirements imposed upon it by such developments as occurred in high octane aviation gasoline alkylation, in the use of Freon as a refrigerant and as carrier in the Aerosol "bug bomb," and in the atomic bomb project as well as in the expansion of other activities requiring hydrofluoric acid; such as, for example, the aluminum industry. Despite the fact that the greater portion of acid-grade fluorspar produced in the last few years went directly into war uses, the future of the acid-grade field still appears bright. As a result of the activity in fluorine chemistry during the war, it seems likely that in the relatively near future almost every phase of human endeavor will find some fluorine compound involved. The other three concentrates produced deserve some attention in these introductory remarks. The lead concentrates first produced contained both zinc and fluorspar but these did not interfere with their marketing. As will be pointed out later, the quality has steadily improved until today it is a relatively high-grade product. Although some zinc smelters accept concentrates containing limited quantities of fluorspar, it is a very objectionable impurity. THE native methods of mining and milling gold-ores in Korea may not present any specially new features, but are chiefly interesting as primitive practices, still followed at the present day. In mining where the rock is hard, wood is piled up near the face of the tunnel or drift and then set on fire. The fire bums for twenty-four hours, after which, three or four days are given for the rocks to cool, before the miners go in and extract the loosened material. The only tools in use are a hammer, a steel gad about five inches long, and a flat spoon-shaped basket. The pay-streak or chute is closely followed, and in places the workings are very small and intricate. Rock not yielding more than $6 per ton is not extracted. The manner of opening a mine is to begin on the outcrop, where the rock pays, sink a shaft or run a tunnel on the vein, and follow the pay-streak and more easily worked ore. When this is exhausted, or the influx of water interferes, the opening is abandoned and operations are begun again at a new spot on the outcrop. The place usually selected is as high up on the mountain as possible, and in no instance is advantage taken of the topography by running a cross-tunnel to tap the vein. The ore is brought in baskets to the surface, and there placed in sacks, holding about 150 1bs. each, and taken to be crushed. The rock is first crushed between two stones, as shown in Fig. 1. The upper stone is oval and rounded on the bottom, so that it can be readily rocked on the under stone. Two pieces of wood, used for handles, are placed, one on each side, in grooves in the upper stone, and held in position by means of straw rope. The lower stone is not smooth on top, but exhibits three elevations running lengthwise, with shallow depressions between them. The middle elevation acts as a fulcrum on which the upper stone may be rocked. From two to ten men, according to the weight and size of the stone used, are employed in rocking. With four men, from 300 to 350 lbs. of rock can be crushed per day, the stone making 50 complete oscillations per minute. The men squat on each side of the stone and move it to and fro by means of the wooden handles. The ore is fed, in pieces up to the size of an egg or even larger, by one of the men. "The richest hill on earth" had its start as a placer gold camp in 1864. The gold was quickly worked out but then silver was discovered in the copper ores in Butte Hill. After ten years as a silver camp, rich copper ore was found in 1881 and the future of Butte was assured. In the early 1960's, the Anaconda Company began the shift from underground mining at Butte to open pit mining of the enormous, low-grade copper deposit surrounding the old high-grade veins which had been worked for over eighty years. Their first primary crusher was a 66 in. by 84 in. (168 m by 2. 13 m) jaw crusher. The pit was expanded at such a rate, however, that its location became endangered. Additionally, the new Clyde Weed concentrator had been built at Butte; and in 1969 construction of a new gyratory installation was started. The primary crusher at the Clyde Weed concentrator is one of the most unusual primary crushers ever put into operation. At times, the ore from the Berkeley pit contains large amounts of timber, pipe, rails, and so forth left in the ore body from the old underground mining operations; and the crusher installation had to be designed so this tramp material could be readily removed ahead of the crusher. Ore is delivered by 100- and 150-ton trucks to two side-by-side dump pockets, each with a capacity of 400 tons. Originally, a hydraulic grapple was installed on the dividing wall between the dump pockets; but it was found that oversize boulders large enough to block the discharge opening at the bottom of each hopper were rapidly covered with other material, and the grapple was unable to reach and remove the large boulders causing the blockage. In addition, the grapple was located in a quite vulnerable position; and it sustained damage from being struck by rock dumped from the trucks. Oversize boulders are now blasted. Underneath each pocket is a vibrating grizzly feeder with the grizzly bars set at 4 in. (102 mm). These feeder-grizzlies are 84 in. (2. 13 m) wide and 32 .ft (9. 75 m) long, with grizzly sections 16 ft (4. 88 m) long. Approximately 75% of the ore passes through the grizzlies and grizzly oversize then drops onto two parallel 6 ft (1. 83 m) wide picking belts. The belts are 3 in. (76 mm) thick and rest on idlers supported by air- filled rubber shock absorbers. At the side of each picking belt is a hydraulic grapple which is used to remove timbers too large to be removed by hand. At times, four men are used to remove timber and tramp iron. Timbers are dropped onto a transverse belt conveyor which discharges into a truck stationed outside the primary crusher building,

This paper presents the ingredients composing a type of oil-base mud that has been successfully used in drilling oil horizons in California, the effect of ingredient concentrations on physical properties, methods of handling at the well and possible advantages of a waterless drilling fluid with excellent plastering properties. INTRODUCTION AN oil-base mud is a rotary drilling fluid in which oil has been substituted for water as the principal liquid ingredient. In recent years such a mud has been developed and used successfully for drilling the oil horizons of wells in various California fields. There are several types of oil-base mud, but only the type that is currently used to any appreciable extent will be considered at this time. The oil-base drilling-mud compositions used by Shell Oil Company, Incorporated have been covered by several patent applications on which patents are expected to issue at an early date. The purpose of this paper is to present data on the fundamental design of the mud; the ingredients used and their specifications; the effect of ingredient concentration on physical properties; the selection of the proper mud; the facilities needed for handling the mud; and a general discussion [oil] drilling with oil-base mud. In view of the early stage of development of oil-base mud, the great number of variables, and the almost unlimited possible combinations of these variables, which in turn require extensive laboratory study, there are certain irregularities and omissions in the data presented here. However, it is believed that sufficient data are at hand to permit a fairly complete analysis of the characteristics of oil-base muds. In view of the excellent plastering properties of oil-base mud when properly proportioned, its use should: (I) minimize the possibility of impairing the natural flow potentialities of the producing horizon such as that resulting from infiltration of water from water-base muds; (2) permit smaller clearances for setting liners, since the mud sheath has no appreciable thickness; (3) eliminate the possibility of clogging the perforations of the liner with thick mud sheath; (4) facilitate the removal of the mud sheath from the walls of the hole, for its mud sheath has no appreciable strength; (5) assist in drilling through formations, such as "heaving shale," where water wetting appears to be a source of difficulty. (6) permit cores to be obtained without contamination from drilling water. FUNDAMENTAL DESIGN OF AN OIL-BASE MUD In the design of any rotary drilling mud it is necessary to select materials that will fulfill the following requirements: (I) act as the liquid medium and regulate the viscosity; (2) impart initial and final plastering properties; (3) give gel strength and structure in order to prevent settling; (4) serve as a weighting material.
