The study of chemical reactions of liquid steel and basic open-hearth slag involves a complex slag system of at least eight important components, and often a number of others. In initiating an experimental program on the equilibrium relationship of slag and metal, it became evident that but little progress could be expected in the interpretation of the complex slags until an understanding had been gained of the simpler liquid systems composed of a limited number of slag constituents. The simplest system that in any way resembles open-hearth slag must contain lime, silica and iron oxide. Attempts to produce in an induction furnace slags containing only these constituents have met with serious limitations because of the solubility of refractories in the slag. Thus in acid-lined furnaces the slag is always saturated with silica and consequently contains between 48 and 63 per cent of this component. In basic-lined furnaces an undesired additional component, magnesia, is introduced to the extent of some 3 to 15 per cent, depending upon the acidity, sometimes with disastrous results to the furnace. Thus in a magnesia-lined furnace, Fetters and Chipman1 found it impossible to prepare slags in which the ratio (CaO + MgO)/SiO2 was less than that corresponding to the metasilicate (approximately 0.8:I). Between this composition and that of the true acid slags lies a field of composition about which very little is known and which cannot be explored by any ordinary means. This circumstance, as well as the desire to study the more basic slags in the absence of magnesia, calls for the development of a method by which slags may be brought into equilibrium with molten metal without coming in contact with refractory. Such a technic has been provided by the rotating induction furnace developed by Barrett, Holbrook and Wood.2 Three modifications of the rotating furnace were described by these authors. The first was essentially a rotating refractory cylinder containing the magnesia crucible, which was itself heated by a graphite crucible. In the second, only the magnesia crucible rotated, the cylindrical graphite heater being stationary. In the third, the coil and crucible revolved, and the metal was heated directly by induction. Experimental Method Furnace The furnace used in this investigation differed from previous designs and may be Sci- a fourth modification of the original rotating furnace. The U. S. Geological Survey has been actively engaged in work on coal for more than 50 years. During this long period we have released more than 300 publications containing information about coal and coal reserves, including details on the thickness, distribution, and quality of coal, and the structure and stratigraphy of the coal-bearing rocks. We have also cooperated with state surveys on many similar publications. For many areas these reports are the only reliable published data on our resources of coal. During the last several years we have substantially increased our activities above the wartime low. We now have field work in progress, or reports in preparation, on 13 detailed mapping projects distributed as follows: 1. Pennsylvania anthracite field 2. Casselman Basin, Md. 3. Leslie County, Ky. 4. Deep River field, N. C. 5. Coosa field, Ala. 6. Powder River field, Mont. 7. Spotted Horse field, Wyo. 8. Yampa field, Colo. 9. Paonia field, Colo. 10. Trinidad field, Colo. 11. Durango field, Colo. 12. Chaco River area, N. M. 13. Lewis and Thurston County fields, Wash. For two of these areas; the Paonia field, Colo., and the Coosa field, Ala., we have published recently preliminary reports, and final reports are in preparation. In addition, we are nearing completion of a coal reserve study of Montana, and are beginning similar studies in several other states, as part of a program of revising our estimate of national coal resources on the basis of presently available data. Factors Involved in Making Estimates Our responsibilities include detailed field mapping to secure information on areas of outcrop of coal beds, their range in thickness, nature of roof rock, amount of overburden, correlation of the beds, stratigraphy and structure of the coal-bearing rocks, and the preparation of coal reserve figures based on these data. The computation and estimation of resources of coal in the ground, like that of resources of other mineral commodities, involves consideration of many additional purely geological factors that can be appraised best through such regional studies. Regional variations in the thickness and texture of rocks overlying and underlying coal beds, for example, give evidence as to the probable position of the edges of the basin of coal deposition, or may aid in the delineation of sand-filled channels that sometimes cut out coal beds. It is apparent that the detailed field studies, in which data are gathered, are the basis for coal reserve studies, and in our present program these two phases of work are being carried on together. THE Whale Lode occurs in the main range of the Rocky Mountains, Park County, Colorado Territory, at Hall Valley. It has been opened up and worked to some extent by the Whale Mine, situated some 11,300 feet above the level of the sea. The mine, with 700 feet of the lode on either side of the discovery shaft, is the property of the Hall Valley Silver-Lead Mining and Smelting Company. The adjacent country rock is a compact, fine-grained gneiss ; its general strike is about north and south, dipping steeply to the west. In the immediate vicinity of the mine, the strata are very nearly vertical. The gneiss incloses numberless veins of a reddish granite, in which the feldspar largely predominates over the quartz and mica, the latter oftentimes being scarcely perceptible. As a general rule these granitic veins seem to more frequently follow the lines of stratification of the gneiss than otherwise. They are of varying width, some large, some small; the larger are from 5 to 6 feet wide. Gash veins of feldspar and quartz are also of very fre¬quent occurrence. The general trend of the lode is about northeast and southwest, intersecting the country rock at about an angle of 45° to its stratification. It dips to the northwest at an angle of 65°. I am unable to state accurately how far this lode has been traced upon the surface, but it is at least well known to extend entirely through the mountain upon which the mine is situated, and is traceable over the ridge by a hollow extending for some distance along the surface, in which the lode crops out. This hollow in the surface rock has probably been formed through decomposition of the vein matter by atmospherical influences. The width of the crevice is variable, generally between 5 and 10 feet; the pay vein varies from an inch, or less, to 36 inches. The vein is generally accompanied both on foot and hanging walls by a whitish, semi-decomposed rock, composed of quartz and decomposed feldspar, and in some places-where the process of decomposition has not reached as advanced a stage-a light-greenish or black mica. This rock, therefore, is in places composed of all the constituents of gneiss, and is undoubtedly nothing more or less than the same in a decomposed condition. Equilibrium data on the reactions of gases with carbon and oxygen dissolved in liquid iron are reviewed and correlated. A source of error in oxygen analysis of graphitic samples is exposed. New experimental data on the oxygen content of high -carbon iron in equilibrium with carbon monoxide indicate that the activity coefficient of oxygen is decreased by additions of carbon. The carbon-oxygen product decreases slightly with increasing carbon content. In recent years a number of investigations have been reported dealing with the equilibria between carbon and oxygen in liquid iron and gases containing carbon oxides. The laboratory study of these reactions dates back to 1931 with the publication of a paper by Vacher and Hamilton' on "The Carbon-Oxygen Equilibrium in Liquid Iron". The principal object of this study was to obtain data on the reaction shown by Eq. [3] below; their data and others by vacherZ permit evaluation of the other equilibrium constants as well. Subsequent studies have been reported by Matoba, Phragmen and Kalling and by Marshall and Chipman.5 The equilibria may be expressed by the following three equations: C + CO,= 2CO;Kl = Pc° [1] 0-+CO = CO,;K2=-P co, "0.PCO c + O = CO; K3 = In the equilibrium constants, ac and a0 are taken as equal to [% C] and [% 0] respectively in the infinitely dilute solution. At finite concentrations an activity coefficient is introduced such that ac =fc [%C], and so forth. It is to be noted that these equations represent only two independent relations, the third being derivable from any two. Richardson and Dennis have determined the conditions of equilibrium in reaction [I] at temperatures of 1560" to 1760°C. Their results have been confirmed by Rist and chipman7 who have shown how the data may be extended to cover the entire range of liquid compositions at temperatures from the eutectic up to 1760°C. An approximate confirmation has been reported by Fuwa and chipman.' These investigations also established the activity coefficient of carbon which was shown to increase rather rapidly with increasing concentration. For the very dilute solutions the value of Kl is expressed in the equation: log^i = - 7280/T+ 6.65 This equation leads to a value of Kl = 430 at 1540° C in excellent agreement with the average value of Marshall and Chipman.5 It is shown as line 1 in Fig. 1 together with the experimental observations. In the case of reaction [2] the direct experimental results can be supplemented by observations on the corresponding reaction with hydrogen, namely reaction [4]:

BLAST-FURNACE blowing engines are broadly of two main types: either steam- or gas-driven reciprocating engines, or turbine-driven rotary engines. Some results of experience with a furnace blown by an engine of the latter type may be of sufficient general interest to relate. The first engine of this type was installed at Oxford Furnace, New Jersey, before the writer's connection with this plant, in March, 1910. This furnace uses chiefly New Jersey magnetites and had been in blast seven months on its old engines when the turbo blower was started. It was 80 ft. high by 17 ft. 6 in. bosh and 11 ft. hearth diameter. It is of interest to see from the records what happened when the turbo engine was put to work. But of course, as the old blowing equipment was rather antiquated, consisting of two I. P. Morris engines with air cylinders 72 by 72 in., in good running order, however, it is evident that the comparison between their work and that of the turbo blower cannot be interpreted as being between machines that were respectively of equal excellence as representatives of their types. Still the results were gratifying and -interesting. The records show that, with the old engines blowing 13,630 cu. ft: of air per minute, measured by piston displacement, the furnace was working up about 480 tons of stock per 24 hr. and producing an average of 132 tons per day and a maximum of 166 tons. The rotary blowing engine installed was a General Electric Co. machine, the driving end being a Curtis steam turbine and the air end a six-stage rotary compressor, all running at about 1,500 to 1,600 rev. per minute, and having a capacity of 25,000 cu. ft. of air per minute up to 25 lb. pressure, and equipped with an automatic constant-volume variable-speed governor. After running this blower, for a period equal to that covered above by the old engines, at an average rate of 15,000 cu. ft. of air per minute, the furnace worked up an average of about 592 tons of material and produced an average of 170 tons per day. Thus, on an apparent increase of 10 per cent. in the air volume there was an increase of about 23.5 per cent. in the materials worked up and of about 28.8 per cent. in the product. The solubility of hydrogen in molten copper-tin alloys is of both practical and theoretical interest. From a practical standpoint, data on the equilibrium solubility as a function of temperature, pressure and alloy composition are valuable for a better understanding of porosity problems in bronze castings. From the theoretical point of view the determination of the hydrogen-copper-tin equilibrium is of interest since it extends the laws governing the solution of gases in metals. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the solubility of hydrogen in representative compositions of the copper-tin system at temperatures ranging from above the liquidus to I300°C. and at pressures from less than 50 mm. of mercury to about atmospheric. Review of Previous Work The solubility of hydrogen in copper was determined by Sieverts and Krumbhaarl in 1910 and by Roentgen and Moeller2 in 1934. Their values are in fair agreement. In 1926 Iwasé3 reported results that were very much higher. The published data on the solubility of hydrogen in tin do not agree. Smithells4 states that no reliable data are available According to Sieverts and Krumbhaar,5 hydrogen is insoluble in tin. Bircumshaw,6 on the other hand, found a definite solubility at 800°C. The latter's experimental procedure did not provide for stirring of the metal and in his opinion he failed to reach equilibrium. Iwasé3 again reported large solubility values. For copper alloys, Sieverts and Krumbhaar5 distinguished between alloying elements that do not markedly affect the solubility of hydrogen, elements that increase the solubility, and elements that reduce it. They named gold, tin, and aluminum as examples of this last group and reported hydrogen solubility data at 1225°C. for the copper-rich side of these alloy systems at atmospheric pressure. Without giving experimental results, they stated that the amount of hydrogen dissolved by liquid copper alloys is proportional to the square root of the pressure as in pure metals. These authors suggested that in a limited way the effect of an alloying element on the solubility of a gas is related to the constitution diagram for the alloy system. Sieverts7 also called attention to the fact that the curve of hydrogen solubility versus composition of copper-tin alloys shows a sharp change of direction at the composition of Cu3Sn and suggested that this compound persists at least to some extent in the molten state. Iwasé3 reported large hydrogen solubility values for several compositions of copper-tin alloys, which appear to be in error.

INTRODUCTION To extend our knowledge of the flotation behavior of sulphide minerals, the response of the following minerals to ethyl xanthate as collector was studied by captive bubble and cylinder flotation tests: antimonite (Sb2S3), arsenopyrite (FeAsS), covellite (CuS), marcasite (FeS2), orpiment (As2S3), pyrrhotite (FeS) and tetrahedrite (4CU2S, Sb2S3). Lollingite (FeAs2) was also examined to determine if its behavior could be correlated with that of pyrite or marcasite (FeS2). EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Mineral for Flotation and Contact Tests Mineral was prepared in the manner already described' and its behavior both freshly ground and "oxidized" was studied. Tests in which the mineral was allowed to oxidize for various periods showed that a uniform response to xanthate was reached in two days or less. Oxidation Products The soluble oxidation products from most of the above minerals were measured and their effect on the flotation of the mineral studied. The mineral samples were wet ground to minus-52 mesh and deslimed, and 20 g of this material placed in 200 ml of distilled water of a measured pH value, and C02 free air bubbled through each suspension at a constant rate (about 1 bubble/sec) for 5 days. It has been shown1 that the size of the mineral is unimportant in the rate of formation of oxidation products and that probably the supply of oxygen to the mineral is the rate-determining step. At the end of 5 days the pH value of the supernatant liquid was measured again, the mineral filtered off and the soluble products determined. Methods for estimation of sulphur acids, ferrous and ferric iron and copper have already been described.1 No satisfactory method was found for antimony. Arsenic was estimated as the arsenate.2 FLOTATION OF "UNOXIDIZED" MINERALS WITH ETHYL XANTHATE AS COLLECTOR Fig I to 3, 4, 6, show the effect of alkali and cyanide as depressants for the minerals with 25 mg potassium ethyl xanthate per liter as collector at 35°C. Wark and Cox3 have shown that with ethyl xanthate as collector, galena, pyrite and chalcopyrite show a greater tolerance to cyanide and hydroxyl ions at room temperature than at 35°C. A new process for the treatment of silver crusts from desilverization of lead has been developed by Societe de Penarroya. The zinc contained in the crusts is recuperated by vacuum distillation at low temperature. The use of special retort crucibles is avoided. AT Noyelles-Godault the Parkes process (zinc addition to a silver-bearing lead melt) is used to desilverize lead bullion from the blast furnace. The crust which rises to the surface of the bath is removed and pressed by a well-known process in a press of the Howard type. The pressed crust, called zinc crust or silver crust, contains 10 pct Ag, 30 pct Zn, and 60 pct Pb. It is melted under a salt bed in a small, narrow, and deep kettle heated only in its upper part. A liquid concentrated alloy is obtained which is called T.A.C. in France (triple alliage concentr6) analyzing approximately 25 pct Ag, 65 pct Zn, 8 to 10 pct Pb, and 1 to 1.5 pct Cu. This T.A.C. is a real metallic alloy, completely deoxidized, and can be stored indefinitely. The process used at Noyelles-Godault consists in distilling this alloy in a tight furnace, under low vacuum and at low temperature, so that only the zinc distills and is condensed into liquid form. The residual silver-bearing lead is almost entirely free from zinc and oxidized dross. The vacuum dezincing equipment, see Figs. 1 and 2, consists of: 1) A furnace, constituted of a casing of steel plate lined with refractory bricks, heated internally by means of graphite resistors. The temperature of the furnace is measured by a thermocouple device and controlled by an automatic temperature regulator which acts upon the flow of the current passing through the resistors. Two doors, numbered 1 and 2 in Fig. 2, are provided for, one for charging the T.A.C., the other for tapping the high silver-bearing lead. 2) A condenser, and an ordinary room lined with good heat conductor refractory material. This condenser is provided with a graphite resistor which serves to bring to temperature when starting the furnace. A thermocouple records the temperature of the zinc melt and controls the temperature in the furnace, that is, the flow of current through the resistors, by means of the above mentioned regulator, so that the distillation rate in the furnace does not exceed that of the condensation. The condenser is connected to the vacuum pump by a filter. The whole equipment should, of course, be fluid-tight. The operation is carried out under a vacuum of about 10 mm Hg.

Metallurgists have, in the last ten years, overcome many difficulties of high zinc in lead blast-furnace slags. This problem was brought to the front at the close of the war, by the price obtained for lead and the high cost of labor, fuel, and flux. The Port Pirie plant of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters, Australia, early in 1919 had increased the zinc oxide in its blast-furnace slags from 13.5 to 20 per cent., at the same time reducing the iron oxide in the slag from 33.5 to 25.6 per cent. These results were obtained by the addition of 10 to 12 per cent. granulated slag to the roaster charge, improved conditions of the crushing, mixing, and roasting of the constituents of the sinter. By experiments and improvements, the practice at this plant has developed a normal slag that carries 22 per cent. zinc oxide, and at times runs as high as 33 per cent. zinc oxide, with only slight furnace trouble. The granulated slag is used not only as a diluent to the sulfur in the roaster charge, but on account of its value as a slag-forming material and the physical properties it imparts to the finished sinter. The ore is mixed with flux and given a double roast. All the first roasting is by sintering with the Dwight & Lloyd machines. The final roasting is performed partly by Dwight & Lloyd machines and partly by H. & H. pots. The charge to the blast furnace consists chiefly of the final sinter, slag shells, siliceous and non-bearing sulfur lead ores. High blast and ore columns are the practice. The greatest care is taken to obtain in the final sinter as low a sulfur content as possible. Attracted by the success of the Port Pirie plant, The Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, at Trail, B. C., in 1920 treated its crushed primary sinter with about 15 per cent. granulated slag. The Trail smelter at this time was short of ore and a large part of the charge to the roasters consisted of the zinc-plant residue having the following analysis: 12 to 16 per cent. lead, 12 to 16 per cent. zinc, and 25 to 30 per cent. iron. The lead in the final sinter was low and the physical condition was so bad that all the sinter had to be screened before it could be charged to the blast furnace. The Montana Phosphate Products Co., subsidiary of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, operates three phosphate properties north and northeast of Garrison, Powell County, Mont. Production of all three is from the same phosphate bed, a 3 to 4-ft. member of the Phosphoria formation, whose outcrop is traceable across the mountains of the Garnet Range in a series of southeasterly pitching folds. Because of topographical differences and of variations in the attitude of the bed, each property has its own mining methods and problems. Most of the phosphate rock produced since 1930 has been shipped to the plant of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. at Trail, B.C., where it is treated with sulphuric acid for conversion to phosphoric acid, which in turn is used to produce various fertilizers. History The occurrence of rock phosphate in Montana has been known since 1910, and the Garrison area was mapped by the United States Geological Survey in 1913. In the nineteen twenties William Anderson, owner of a ranch 8 miles north of Garrison, discovered phosphate on his land, and the Montana Phosphate Co., which later became the Montana Phosphate Products Co., was formed to work the deposit. Montana Phosphate Products Co. later obtained United States leases on two adjoining parcels of ground, and this combined property, known as the Anderson mine, has been the main source of Con-solidated's phosphate rock. The mine now includes an adjoining parcel leased from Anaconda and mined from the Anderson workings. In 1940, the Graveley mine, a small privately owned property 6 miles east of the Anderson, was leased from the owner by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and a U. S. lease held by Graveley on some adjoining ground was subleased. In 1943 the Luke mine, on the Mineral Hill property, 1 3/4 miles south-southwest of the Graveley, a U. S. lease, which previously had produced a few thousand tons, was optioned from the lessees by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and is now being developed. At both these mines the rock is appreciably higher grade than at the Anderson mine. Geology The Phosphoria formation is the Permian member of an extensive sequence of Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks. It is underlain by Pennsylvanian (Quadrant) quartzite and Mississippian limestone, and overlain without any marked unconformity by Jurassic (Ellis) shale and Cretaceous shale and sandstone. The Montana Phosphate Products Co., subsidiary of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, operates three phosphate properties north and northeast of Garrison, Powell County, Mont. Production of all three is from the same phosphate bed, a 3 to 4-ft. member of the Phosphoria formation, whose outcrop is traceable across the mountains of the Garnet Range in a series of southeasterly pitching folds. Because of topographical differences and of variations in the attitude of the bed, each property has its own mining methods and problems. Most of the phosphate rock produced since 1930 has been shipped to the plant of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. at Trail, B.C., where it is treated with sulphuric acid for conversion to phosphoric acid, which in turn is used to produce various fertilizers. History The occurrence of rock phosphate in Montana has been known since 1910, and the Garrison area was mapped by the United States Geological Survey in 1913. In the nineteen twenties William Anderson, owner of a ranch 8 miles north of Garrison, discovered phosphate on his land, and the Montana Phosphate Co., which later became the Montana Phosphate Products Co., was formed to work the deposit. Montana Phosphate Products Co. later obtained United States leases on two adjoining parcels of ground, and this combined property, known as the Anderson mine, has been the main source of Con-solidated's phosphate rock. The mine now includes an adjoining parcel leased from Anaconda and mined from the Anderson workings. In 1940, the Graveley mine, a small privately owned property 6 miles east of the Anderson, was leased from the owner by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and a U. S. lease held by Graveley on some adjoining ground was subleased. In 1943 the Luke mine, on the Mineral Hill property, 1 3/4 miles south-southwest of the Graveley, a U. S. lease, which previously had produced a few thousand tons, was optioned from the lessees by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and is now being developed. At both these mines the rock is appreciably higher grade than at the Anderson mine. Geology The Phosphoria formation is the Permian member of an extensive sequence of Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks. It is underlain by Pennsylvanian (Quadrant) quartzite and Mississippian limestone, and overlain without any marked unconformity by Jurassic (Ellis) shale and Cretaceous shale and sandstone. Activity data of carbon as a function of both temperature and composition throughout the stable austenite range is correlated by mearts of an equation derived from a quasi-chemical model. The carbon activity data of austmite for temperatures between 800° and 1200°C are utilized in conjunction with the activity of carbon calculated for the y solidus using the activity of carbon in liquid iron and published austenite-liquid equilibria. The results agree very well with Chip-man's correlation; however, a small difference in the activity of carbon in the high-temperature range of the austenite field is evident. Excellent agreement is found for the heat of solution of graphite in infinitely dilute austenite; from this study the value is 10,550 cal as compared with Chipman's value of 10,680 cal. AS part of a program to study microsegregation in dendritic solidification of ternary Fe-C-Cr alloys, it was desirable to be able to describe the equilibria between austenite and liquid iron in Fe-C-Cr alloys. In this regard, it was necessary to correlate existing data on the activity of carbon in Fe-C austenite as a function of both temperature and composition. At that time, Chipman's analysis1 of the thermodynamics of binary Fe-C austenite was not available. It will be shown that this study and Chipman's study agree rather well throughout the stable austenite range of temperature and composition; however, some small differences appear at temperatures greater than the eutectic temperature. Benz and Elliott 2 presented isoactivity lines for austenite superimposed on their revised Fe-C phase diagram. Using an expression from Darken and Gury 3 representing Smith's4 activity data between 800" and 1000°C, they found that the activities extrapolated above 1000°C to the solidus did not agree with the activities determined from the corresponding liquidus compositions. It is the purpose of the following argument to reconcile carbon activity data of austenite with the activity in liquid Fe-C alloys as determined by Rist and Chipman. 5 In addition, a simple analytical expression is sought for computational convenience. ACTIVITY DATA OF CARBON IN ZRON Fig. 1 shows the activity of carbon in Fe-C austenite as determined by Smith, 4 Schenck and Kaiser, 6 Scheil et a1.,7 and Bungardt et al.' The lines are merely drawn to separate the data into the respective isotherms. These data are inadequate to determine the activity of carbon at temperatures greater than 1200°C. THE high corrosion resistance possessed by tin under most circumstances, combined with its generally satisfactory appearance and useful physical properties, has led to many and varied uses for the metal. These uses have been partly limited by the fact that tin is an expensive metal, therefore many applications have been developed in which tin has been employed in combination with lead, either by coating, as in tin-lined collapsible tubes, or by the formation of alloys containing various proportions of tin-rich and lead-rich phases, as terne plate. A detailed knowledge of the corrosion characteristics of the tin-lead couple therefore is of general interest and has become specially important at the present time, when every effort is being made to conserve tin as much as possible. The present study. has been limited to carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2 so that the results may be related to earlier work on the corrosion of tin and its alloys.1-3,6 In these papers, the effects of a number of anion and cation additions to these solutions have been observed. APPARATUS AND METHOD The electrodes for the corrosion cell were cut from rolled sheet about 1/16 in. thick. The length of all specimens was held constant at 7 in., while the width was varied from 1/2 to 2 in. These electrodes were fastened to brass electrode supports, which were attached to rubber stoppers fitting into tall-type one-liter Pyrex beakers that contained the electrolyte. The lead electrodes were prepared from Omaha pig* and the tin was rolled from a slab of Chempur.? After cutting to size, the sheets were polished with No. I emery paper and cleaned with carbon tetrachloride. The edges, back and upper parts of the specimen were coated with a synthetic lacquer, which was supplemented with beeswax for the lead electrodes. The binding posts were coated with beeswax after the electrodes had been damped. The pH of the electrolyte was controlled? by adjusting the ratio of carbonate to bicarbonate. Approximately 600 ml. of electrolyte was used in each beaker. The entire assembly was placed in an oil bath thermostatically adjusted to operate at 30°C. ± 0.10. Potentials were measured against a saturated calomel electrode connected. to the cell by an agar-agar salt bridge. Introduction The use of frequency of vibration measurements to determine tension has long been accepted by industries that use electrical or stranded cables of wire ropes in their operations. In contemplating how to determine the tension in chords of a roof truss, it seems almost inevitable that a similar approach should be investigated even though there are some important dissimilarities in physical behavior between a chord of a rod-type Birmingham truss and a stretched wire rope. While the dominant feature of both types of behavior is the existence of tension, the bending resistance of the vibrating truss chord cannot be ignored. And it is common to have attached to the chord, pieces of hardware (turnbuckles, extension sleeves, wedge boxes) that represent concentrations of mass not usually found in a vibrating wire rope. Analytical solutions to the problem of vibrating wires or beams can be found in the literature on vibrations (Timoshensko, 1955; Den Hartog, 1956). But in every case, at least one of the ingredients of the vibrating truss chord is missing. The presence of axial tension, or bending resistance, of concentrated masses and of end conditions peculiar to truss chords is a combination that appears not to have been dealt with before, although the techniques for dealing with it are commonly known. The purpose of this note is to report the results of a project to measure and calibrate such frequencies. The work was conducted by the University of Pittsburgh under the sponsorship of the US Bureau of Mines. Field observations Tests were conducted on 24 different truss installations. The first 18 trusses were installed in shale roofs above Kentucky No. 9 seam and Illinois No. 6 seam. The remaining six were placed against the competent sandstone over the Pocahontas No. 3 seam in West Virginia. Chord tension was determined by two electrical resistance strain gages, in series, applied diametrically opposite to one another on the rod before tensioning. Due to the combined effects of inexact gage placement, rod bending and residual torsion in the chord due to tightening, errors in tension as high as 1780 N (400 lb) were reasonably possible. Due to faulty soldering or damage, three of the first 18 trusses and one of the final six were rendered completely unreliable. In addition to strain, the first natural frequency of vibration was observed to the nearest 0.1 Hz. Dimensions recorded included the span between contact points at the bearing blocks (Fig. 1) and the locations and amount of excess rod and rod gap at the wedge box and turnbuckle, respectively.

THE design of the Chuquicamata concentrator offered an unusual combination of problems, all of which had, in one way or another, a definite effect upon the final arrangement of all the equipment and necessary facilities. First of all, a remotely located project of this magnitude required careful selection of equipment with an adequate supply of replacement parts and in some cases necessitated stand-by spare equipment ready for immediate use. Fortunately, in the course of determining the proper flowsheet, in itself a prime factor in the concentrator design, it was possible to conduct numerous grinding and flotation tests at the Anaconda and Andes concentrators. As a result of these tests made under actual operating conditions, most of the major equipment best suited for treating the Chuquicamata ore efficiently was decided upon while preliminary design layouts were still being made. The design has been based primarily on the treatment of sulphide ore crushed to about 3/4 or 1 in. However, until the new sulphide crushing plant is completed it will be necessary to handle ore crushed to 3/8 in. in the existing oxide crushing plants and to some extent a mixed ore which has had its oxide copper content removed by leaching. This mixed ore, known as leached residue, will contain a certain amount of sulphuric acid from the leaching process which necessarily requires special protective measures. Several factors influenced the final location of the Concentrator. The only established fact known during preliminary design layout was the elevation of the dumping floor over the fine ore bin. This was predetermined by the desired level railroad grade across part of the existing tailing and leached residue dumps from the oxide plant to the bin. Next it was necessary that a site be chosen that would not require an excessively long haul from either the present oxide plant or the mine and in addition provide a fairly constant natural ground slope sufficiently wide to accommodate the length of the ultimate concentrator. The site as finally chosen to meet the foregoing restrictions provided a natural ground slope of 6 to 7 pct. This was excellent, especially in a region subject to earthquakes, as it assured that foundations of heavy equipment and footings for building and crane columns would rest on cut or undisturbed ground. However, this shallow slope, although having some definite advantages in the overall consideration of plant layout, resulted in the need for extensive studies in the general arrangement of equipment. The trying times experienced by the steel industry during the past four years have emphasized the necessity of producing pig iron at the lowest possible cost. The trend in both design and operation of blast furnaces has been toward this end rather than toward securing maximum production from a unit or group of units. In the following discussion the trend in design of stacks and auxiliary equipment will be taken up before operation is considered. Although few furnaces have been constructed in the past few years, the trend is definitely toward larger furnaces with a hearth diameter of 24 or 25 ft. Such a furnace is very flexible, being able to produce efficiently any desired daily tonnage between 500 and-1000 or more. The detail of the design of furnace stacks, with the exception of the top, has changed little in recent years. To decrease the velocity of gas through the throat of the furnaces, thereby reducing flue-dust losses, the stock-line areas are constantly being made larger. The top dimensions of the larger furnaces are usually as follows: Stock-line diameter, 19 to 20 ft.; large bell diameter, 14 to 15 ft.; straight section of throat, 5 to 10 ft. high; inwall batter, 1 to 11/4 in. Pe ft. The ratio between the area of the stock line and the area of the large. bell is usually about 1.85 to 1. The stock-line diameter of some smaller furnaces has been increased to that of the hearth diameter of the stack at the expense of the stack batter. Remarkable decreases in flue-dust production are claimed for the so-called " Venturi top," which is achieved by flaring the stock line, in the form of an inverted cone, from a diameter of 17 ft. at 10 ft. below the large bell closed to a diameter of 19 ft. 6 in. at 3 ft. below the large bell closed. Time alone will tell which of the two designs is the better. Because of differences in raw materials, one top may be better for some plants and the other top for other plants. In the search for lower costs and higher efficiencies all operators are, adopting stoves that will maintain maximum hot-blast temperatures with a minimum gas consumption. To meet these requirements, stove capacity of approximately 7 sq. ft. of heating surface and 1.8 cu. ft. of brick volume is required per cubic foot of wind blown per minute.

IN 1938 Ralston4 reviewed the many attempts to find a satisfactory collector for the separation of cassiterite from its ores and in 1944 Dean and Ambrose2 summarized some further attempts. Generally, soaps and amines are effective but nonselective collectors. We have discovered that reagents containing either the polar group -SO4- or _S03- are excellent collectors for cassiterite and promise to be selective.1 The response to these reagents of cassiterite and of minerals commonly associated with it was studied, using the captive-bubble technique. Using these fundamental data, the practicability of separation and concentration of tin was investigated by flotation tests in a 2000gram Denver cell. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Reagents All inorganic reagents were of Analar grade. The preparation and purification of sodium cetyl sulphate, cetyl trimethyl-ammonium bromide, laurylamine and cetylamine have been previously described.5 The other collectors were commercial surface-active agents, which were used without purification. Tests Captive-bubble Tests and Cylinder Flotation Tests have been previously described.5-10 The full lines shown in the figures relating solution composition to contact (flotation) distinguish solutions in which contact (flotation) is possible from those in which it is not. The curve is derived by successive approximation and the accuracy is ±0.2 pH units and ± 5 mg. per liter of collector or depressant. Solution compositions for which it was shown experimentally that contact or flotation is possible are marked by a circle, those for which it is not possible, by a cross, and those for which it is doubtful by a cross within a circle. It is assumed that at all other solution compositions within (without) the curve, contact or flotation is possible (not possible). After testing in the collector solution, the mineral was removed, washed, and tested by the captive-bubble method in water, or floated in a cylinder with frother only. In this way the composition of solutions in which a mineral was conditioned but in which properties of the collector solution prevented contact or flotation can be defined. The composition of solutions in which conditioning was possible lie between the full and broken curve, and the experimental results are indicated by a square. The curves show the limits of composition of solutions in which flotation in a cell would be possible but many factors other than those considered in these tests determine recovery and grade of a given mineral in practice. Development in the Jackson gas field, Hinds and Rankin counties, for 1935 continued at a slow pace, there being only nine wells drilled on the structure, of which five resulted in gas producers and four in dry holes. There were no wells drilled deep enough during 1935 to test any of the horizons below the producing Selma chalk. There are 113 producing gas wells in the Jackson gas field, with three wells on the southeast edge of the field making some oil with a large quantity of salt water; this oil comes from the same horizon as the gas. The combined open flow of the 113 gas wells is about 4,100,000,000 cu. ft. The proven area of the field is approximately 8000 acres. The production of 10,291,000,000 cu. ft. for 1935 represents the largest yearly pull from the field by almost a billion cubic feet. The total production from the field to date is 45,104,000,-000 cu. ft. It is interesting to note that the rock pressure has dropped from 1010 lb. per sq. in. initial to 943 Ib. at the end of 1935, a decline of only 67 lb. in 6 years. There is a difference of opinion as to the age of the deepest formation tested on the Jackson structure; some people holding that it is Tuscaloosa, others, Trinity, and still others that it is Paleozoic, probably Pottsville. The production of the Amory gas field, Monroe County, continued to decline and the capacity was far under the demand. Originally there were four producing wells in the field with a combined open-flow capacity of approximately 15,000,000 cu. ft. and a rock pressure of 680 lb. per sq. in. At the end of 1935 only two wells were producing with a combined open-flow of less than 1 million cu. ft. and the rock pressure down to 100 lb. or less. No attempt has been made to drill new wells in the immediate field but three wells are being drilled in the county in an effort to secure new supplies of gas. The wildcat operations for 1935, with only 11 wells drilled, were the lowest since 1932, just about one-half the number drilled during 1934. None of the wildcat wells drilled in 1935 resulted in producers and, so far as the writer is aware, did not uncover any large structures. The 11 wells drilled were abandoned or junked at comparatively shallow depths, except the well drilled in George County to 6928 ft. by the United Gas
