When supplies of high pressure mercury or other liquids are required in analytical work, it is convenient to have the source of supply at a relatively constant pressure and available in sufficient volume to satisfy the requirements of the apparatus in use. It is also desirable that the pressuring device be as simple and as inexpensive as possible and convenient to operate. This pump combined with a small storage reservoir containing gas under pressure has the attributes of (1) positive control of the maximum output pressure through the use of a regulator in the low pressure air supply; (2) an increasing capacity as the rate of withdrawal of mercury from the pressured system is increased; and (3) simplicity, requiring only the use of a lathe, drill press, and welding unit in its construction. DESCRIPTION Essential parts of the pump are shown in Fig. 1. In appearance the unlt is similar to the usual steam pump in common use in industrial applications although considerably smaller in size. The main differences lie in the area ratio of the air and mercury pistons and in the design of the air valve mechanism. Approximate diameters of these pistons are 4.25 in. to 0.375 in. respectively, giving an area ratio of about 130 to 1. The air piston (2) is attached to the end of shaft (4), with the mercury piston being merely a reduced extension of the shaft. Mercury intake and discharge to the pump are controlled by high pressure check valves that screw into the ports indicated at (6). Air supply is controlled by the valve assembly mounted on top of the

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining-maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining-reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them. .

The electrical resistivity of rocks has been studied quite extensively, in particular, the effects of temperature and confining pressure on resistivity. References 1 through 6 at the end of this chapter pertain to electrical resistivity of rock and contain further references on the same topic. The present study is motivated by an interest in determining the in-situ properties of rock as well as the stress state of the rock and how these quantities are changing with time. Most of the previous work on the electrical resistivity of rocks has been directed toward saturated rocks at relatively high confining pressures and temperatures. The present study was oriented towards air-dry surface rock that might occur in mine pillars. The mean stress and temperature under such conditions are comparatively low. It has been demonstrated that the resistivity of rock is highly dependent upon the porosity. In fact, for saturated rocks, a relationship referred to as Archie's law has been established between porosity and electrical resistivity. In the case of saturated rock, the property that is actually being measured is the resistivity of the solid/fluid system. Since the resistivity of the fluid alone is usually much lower than that of the dry rock, it is understandable that the resistivity of a saturated rock is in general several orders of magnitude lower than the resistivity of a relatively dry rocli. For dry rock, it seems reasonable that the electrical resistivity should increase as microcracks open within the material. Since microcracks open as material is stressed closer and closer to its failure point, it appears that there should be a correlation between electrical resistivity

A bentonite-clay drilling mud when treated with tetrasodium pyroarsenate underwent substantially the same reduction in viscosity and water loss as when treated with the complex phosphates. The complex arsenate showed a slightly higher reversion after heating; the other arsenates showed poor viscosity-reducing properties. Introduction During the past 10 years the chemical control of drilling mud has become of major importance in affecting the successful drilling and working over of wells. The desired properties of drilling mud have been well established, and in obtaining these characteristics there has developed a large market for viscosity-reducing chemicals. Viscosity reduction produced by humic acid, tannic acid, sodium silicate, sodium tannate, Calgon, and the complex phosphates has been described by Loomis, Ford, and Fidiam.l The effects Of treatment with complex phosphates and ammonium PolyPhosPhates on the rheological properties of muds were investigated by Fancher2 and the alkali vanadates have been described by Williams.3 Laboratory Investigations It is the purpose of this paper to point out the effects of arsenates in controlling the viscosity and gelling characteristics of a drilling mud. Viscosities and gel strengths were measured at room temperatures with a Stormer viscosimeter calibrated in centipoises and operated at 600 r.p.m. Water loss was determined at 80°F. with the Baroid low-pressure wall-building tester at a pressure of I00 lb. per sq. in. for 30 min. The hydrogen-ion concentration was measured with a glass electrode. The bentonite-clay suspensions were prepared in the laboratory and allowed to age several days before testing. Members of the Arsenic Group in the periodic Table include arsenic, antimony and bismuth, but this investigation was limited to arsenic. Phosphorus also occurs in Group V of the Periodic system and phosphorus and arsenic form many closely related compounds such as pH3 and AsH3, P2O5 and As2O5, H3PO4 and H3AS04 Samples of tetrasodium pyroarsenate were prepared by fusing c.p. disodium arsenate (Na2HA5O4.7H2O). According to Friend,' this re-forms the ortho-arsenate on dissolution in water. Sodium trihydrodiorthoarsenate was prepared as described by Mellor,5 from arsenic pen-toxide as follows: As2O5 + 3H20 -> 2H3AsO4 2H3AS04 + 3NaOH Na3H3(AsO4)2 .3H20 Sodium dihydrogen orthoarsenateWaHz-As04) was obtained by fusing together equivalent quantities of arsenious Oxide and sodium nitrate, dissolving the residue in water and allowing it to crystallize.

L. J. Dijkstra and R. Sladek, (Ontario Research Foundation, Toronto, and Institute for the Study of Metals, Chicago, respectively)—This interesting paper confirms some results obtained some years ago in collaboration with Fast: namely the broadening of the nitrogen peak by the presence of small amounts of manganese. Later on a more extensive study of this effect was made at the Institute for the Study of Metals at Chicago. As the work has not yet been submitted for publication we wish to mention here briefly some of the results. The effect of about 0.5 atomic pct manganese, chromium, molybdenum, or vanadium on the nitrogen-peak in iron was examined. The broadening found previously in the case of manganese was even found to be more pronounced for chromium. In the case of molybdenum and vanadium a double peak was observed which seemed to justify the idea that in all cases mainly two relaxation times were involved: namely, the normal relaxation time as found in pure iron and a second relaxation time related to the existence of abnormal interstitial lattice sites introduced by the foreign metallic element. The analysis showed that for the normal nitrogen-peak as a reference at 22°C the abnormal peak was found at about 32°, 47°, 75°, and 87°C in the case of manganese, chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium, respestively. In the manganese alloy the free energy difference for a nitrogen-atom at an abnormal and a normal lattice site was estimated at 2800 cal per mol. This means that for temperatures above 100°C the solid solubility and overall diffusion rate of nitrogen is not much affected by additions of 0.5 pct Mn. We believe that the difference in rate of precipitation of nitrogen in pure iron and the manganese alloy is mainly a question of the number of potential nuclei available in the different steels. In studying the effect of these alloying elements on precipitation of nitrogen, a distinction must be made between the para reaction and ortho reaction, using terminology introduced by Hultgren.7 The ortho reaction in which the alloying metallic element participates in the diffusion under formation of nitrides occurs at high temperatures such as 600°C. The para reaction in which the alloying metallic element does not diffuse and in which the nitride inherits its alloy content from the matrix occurs at lower temperatures. To prevent the ortho reaction the alloys have to be quenched rapidly from the phase. It is not surprising that the authors find that the height of the peak indicates a lower nitrogen content than chemical analysis. In the first place the peak is not a single relaxation peak and secondly, the steels were not quenched from the phase after the nitrogen was introduced at 580 °C.

LESTER GUTTMAN* The question of whether classical thermodynamics alone imposes any lower limit to solid solubilities was raised during a discussion among various members of the Institute for the Study of Metals. Although our conclusions are not new,1 they may be worth reiterating, since confusion on this subject seems to persist. In a binary system (A,B), the conditions for equilibrium, at constant pressure and temperature, between a solid solution and a liquid solution are µAs = µAl [la] µBs = µbl [lb] Here µ denotes the chemical potential either of component A or B, as shown by the subscripts, and the superscripts s and l refer to the solid and liquid solutions, respectively. These two conditions are just sufficient to determine the compositions of both phases. Suppose, however, that the solid phase is found experimentally not to contain any of component B; then we cannot evaluate µbs, which is defined by Here nAs and nBs are the number of mols of A and B, respectively, in the solid, whose free energy is Fs. Eq lb cannot be used, but it is no longer needed: we stated at the outset that the solid has the composition "pure A," and only the liquid composition need now be determined, from Eq la. All the equilibrium properties of the system can be derived from Eq la rigorously and simply. Hence there is no purely thermodynamic reason to exclude phase diagrams which show precisely zero solid solubility. Marsh2 has objected to such diagrams as implying that even the transformation of pure A begins at the eutectic temperature. In any case, the user of the diagram must have a certain minimum knowledge of how to interpret it, and it would seem simpler to remember the general rule that eutectic temperatures have no significance for pure components, rather than to show, say, by broken lines, on a scale which will often be exaggerated, a hypothetical solid-solubility about which we know only that it is less than a certain amount. The case of an intermetallic compound in equilibrium with a binary liquid solution does not require a separate treatment since nothing in the foregoing was dependent on the nature of the components. Therefore, thermodynamics alone does not exclude the possibility that (intermetallic) compounds may exist with compositions always precisely those given by their chemical formulas. With the aid of extra-thermodynamic methods, one may conclude that the solubility of one solid in another is never exactly zero. On the other hand, one would generally expect that the solubility will be small unless the components resemble one another (as do the metals), or form weakly-bound crystals. Therefore, it is useful to know that when there is no direct evidence for solid-solubility, one may neglect it without violating thermodynamic principles.

As a practicing mining engineer, I face many rock mechanics' problems daily and would like to mention one or two examples to illustrate the current gap between laboratory investigations and actual field problems. I would like to endorse Dr. Obert's suggestion that more field measurements and observations should be undertaken. There is an ever-increasing body of data beginning with Hast's results in Sweden,l then measurements at Elliot Lake, Canada, and so on, including our own measurements at White Pine, which clearly indicate that the horizontal stresses underground are often at least as large as the vertical stresses. Visual obsenation of the deformation of roof and pillars (including failure due to horizontal compression) also demonstrates that the horizontal stresses are often most important. Yet almost every laboratory investigation begins with the assumption that the only stresses acting are vertical. Roof spans in layered formations. for example, are calculated on the assumption that the rock behaves as a gravity loaded beam. This is all too often unrealistic. Roof bolts are also often considered to be simply means of suspending the gravity loaded beams. As Dr. Reed has mentioned they are probably, in fact, acting to restrain a beam which is attempting to buckle due to lateral pressure. The fact that moisture can reduce the strengths of some rocks as much as 50 percent has been known for many years. In the mine me are almost always faced with wet rock, yet no one has investigated ways in which this wakening effect can be overcome. as, for example, by waterproofing the rock. C. Fairhurst, University of Minnesota I would like to mention that we have found,2 from stress-relief determinations, that appreciable (over 1000 lb per sq in.) horizontal pressures occur also at the surface in granites quarried in central Minnesota. Whilst I agree that more field measurements are desirable, it is important to point out that most university research is undertaken by graduate students who must attend classes daily. Their research is therefore restricted to the laboratory. A.M. Starfield, University of Minnesota No one denies the importance of obtaining: data from field measurements. It is equally important, however, that field measurements be guided by theory. Much time and money can be wasted by indiscriminate measurement. An example of the value of theory in interpreting measurements is given in Dr. Obert's comments on the time dependent strain observed in a salt mine. He anticipated that the stress at the wall of the opening would change with time because salt is viscoelastic rather than elastic. It can be shown from theory that if an excavation in a viscoelastic medium is unsupported, then the stress at the wall does

AS reported several years ago,' nitrogen may be taken up from the atmosphere by austenitic Cr-Ni steels during creep or creep-rupture tests. This was indicated by chemical analysis and by the appearance of a new microstructural phase, or phases, tentatively identified as chromium nitride (S), at the surface or at the intergranular cracks associated with fracture. The nitrogen pickup was observed to be dependent on time, temperature, and deformation. In a more recent investigation, a sample was obtained in which there was sufficient of the precipitate to suggest that it could be readily identified by X-ray diffraction. This sample had been taken from a 1/4 in. diam creep-rupture specimen of annealed, type 304L stainless steel of the following initial composition: C, 0.03 pct; Mn, 0.65; P, 0.010; S, 0.019; Si, 0.54; Cr, 19.50; Ni, 12.02; N, 0.031; and Al, 0.005. The specimen had ruptured after 10,470 hr at 1500°F (2000 psi). In this case nitrides were distributed across the whole section of the sample, Fig. 1. The precipitate occurred both at the grain boundaries and within the grains; the latter precipitate had in some cases the appearance of pearl-ite, and in others was distinctly Widmanstatten. Chemical analysis of the sample after test showed 0.64 pct "soluble" nitrogen (soluble in 1:1 hydrochloric acid: water) and 0.18 pct "insoluble7' nitrogen (insoluble in the hydrochloric acid solution but dissolved by fuming sulphuric acid). For identification of the precipitate by X-ray diffraction, the matrix in the surface layer of the specimen was dissolved by prolonged attack in an alcoholic solution of picric and hydrochloric acids. The appearance of the specimen surface after such etching is shown in Fig. 1c. The diffraction pattern of the surface-concentrated precipitate was obtained with a recording spectrometer in both the forward and back-reflection regions (the latter by adapting a special fixture to the conventional X-ray unit). The observed X-ray diffraction lines, Table I, show the presence of Cr,N and CrN; the agreement with interplanar spacings calculated from reported data2,3 is quite good. Since it has been suggested' that CrN dissolves only in concentrated sulphuric acid, whereas Cr2N dissolves in dilute hydrochloric or sulphuric acids, an effort was made to distinguish between the two nitrides. This proved possible, inasmuch as etching in a dilute solution of hydrochloric acid gave a sample in which microscopic examination showed that much of the Widmanstatten-pearlitic precipitate within the grains had been eaten out, leaving the grain boundary precipitate in relief, and which, when examined by X-ray diffrac-

The San Francisco Section met on September 11 to discuss the problem of Labor in its Relation to the Mining Engineer. Mr. W. H. Shockley was in the chair. T. A. Rickard opened the discussion under four heads: The recognition of the union, the rustling-card, the sliding scale of wages, and the' contract system. He expressed his belief that collective bargaining cannot be ignored, and insisted that the mining company represented a collective bargaining of its shareholders with the men. employed in its mine. He held that the contract system was often used unfairly, but that used fairly it was the best check on labor tyranny. The rustling-card he held to be right in principle, in so far as it gave the employer the choice of employees, but he believed that it was often used in an irritating way to black-list refractory laborers. The sliding scale of wages was easy to establish in prosperous times, but it would inevitably lead to trouble when conditions went against the miner. His conclusion was that the quarrels of labor and capital were due mainly to a lack of the sense of fair play and of social justice. Albert Burch agreed with most of the foregoing, and insisted that 90 per cent. of the men were inclined to be just, but that the 10 per cent: made all the trouble. He stated that he had introduced the rustling-card in the Coeur d'Alene in 1899, as a means for getting rid of agitators. E. L. Foucar considered that labor was irresponsible. He described his experience in Peru, where the authorities promptly stopped a strike of Italian miners by threatening prompt punishment for any display of violence. Morton Webber also gave a bit of his own experience, to show that the chief trouble is that the men do not think for themselves, and are therefore easily led by fomenters of trouble. F. H. Probert described his experiences in Germany and. also in Arizona, and insisted that too often the men were not given a fair hearing. E. T. Blake argued that a manager must get the workmen's point of view, in order to control them effectively. He believed that young men who started life doing manual labor were in a better position to understand their fellow workers. George J. Young suggested that the mine owners should encourage the good men to lead the unions, and not leave the direction of the unions to the noisy element.

FIVE miles southwest of Mt. Holly Springs, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Clay Co. has been mining and milling a white clay since 1896; for use in white cement, as a filler in rubber, pigment and paper, in the manufacture of insecticides, and for other minor purposes. Until late in 1942, when the mine was abandoned because of labor shortage, combined underground mining and surface stripping produced approximately 30,000 tons of clay a year, of which 10,000 tons were refined in the mill. GEOLOGY Lower Cambrian Antietam quartzite and the Montalto quartzite, stratigraphically older, trend N.55°E. and make a sharp 1600-ft. anticlinal ridge of the South Mountains. The Tomstown dolomite overlies the Antietam quartzite on the southeast flank of the anticline, which is displaced near its crest by a steeply dipping oblique fault. Erosion of the less resistant Tomstown formation has resulted in a narrow valley at an elevation of 700 ft. Directly on top of the Antietam quartzite and at the base of the Tomstown formation is a zone of sandy white clay, lenticular along the strike of the formations, ranging in thickness from 10 to 300 ft. within a mile. All of the formations dip steeply to the southeast, from 65° to vertical. The clay crops out at an elevation of about 1000 feet. ORIGIN AND CHARACTER The uppermost part of the Antietam formation is sericitic and schistose at many places, and at all these places weathering is in an advanced stage. The clay is the residual product of weathering of this sericitic quartzite or sandy schist. The crude clay has the physical aspect of a sandy kaolin, but there are large areas in the clay formation that are low in free silica, and commonly the 30 ft. adjacent to the Antietam quartzite is notably free of silica. The overlying Tomstown dolomite has been weathered almost completely to a mixed yellow and brown clay, which carries a zone of nodular and chunky limonite and manganese ore, 4 to 12 ft. thick, about l00 ft. from the contact with the white clay. In mining, this zone is an important "marker," indicating where the white clay may be expected in an advancing tunnel. The contact of the white clay formation with the yellow and brown clay of the Tomstown formation is relatively sharp, although the line of contact is irregular and therefore responsible for the lenticular character of the white clay formation. Following is an analysis of the refined clay containing less than one per cent of moisture when dried at 212°F.: Si02, 67.05 per cent; A1203, 22.27; Fe203, 0.40; CaO, 0.00; Ti02, 1.05; MgO, 0.52; Na20, 0.04; K20, 0.88; ignition loss, 7.65; total, 99.86.

The connection between short-range order and thermodynamic activities in binary solid solutions has been pointed out by Birchenall1 who calculated approximate values of the energy of interaction of Zn and Cu and of the degree of short-range order in alpha-brass at one composition and two temperatures. The purpose of this note is to call attention to a somewhat more accurate theory than that used by Birchenall and to extend the calculations to a wider range of temperatures and compositions as a means of testing its applicability. This is an example of the well-known general method of comparing measured thermodynamic functions of a system with those calculated from a microscopic model by means of statistical mechanics. In this case, mathematical approximations must be used which make difficult any decision about the validity of the model. Birchenall's statistical method resembles closely that calletl by Fowler and Guggenheim2 the "quasi-chemical" method which has been shown to lead in certain cases to results identical with those obtained by the method of Bethe.3 The quasi-chemical method has been extended by Takagi4 to give general formulas for the free energy of binary solid solutions based on several lattices at all compositions and temperatures. Specifically, he treats the four systems typified by: I. ß—brass; 2. a— brass; 3. AuCus; 4. AuCu. THE Tri-State Zinc, Inc., Galena, Ill., was confronted with the problem of securing ore from a deposit because the hoisting shaft was several thousand feet from the mill. The orebody is several thousand feet long, averaging 200 ft in width and 60 ft in height and opened up by vertical shafts some 300 ft deep. Mining is by the room-and-pillar method. During the initial operation the ore was loaded by conventional electric 1/2-yd boom-and-dipper shovels and hauled to the shaft by 8-ton diesel trucks. This underground ore loading and hauling was well adapted to the conditions and productive of low costs per ton. However, with the mill situated as mentioned, a triple handling of all broken rock was necessary: l—from the stope to the shaft by truck, 2—up the shaft by skip br can into the surface hopper, and 3—by truck from the surface hopper to the crushing plant at the mill. In addition to the repeated handling, serious troubles were encountered during the winter because of freezing in the shaft hopper. Consideration was given to either moving the mill to the new orebody or to the construction of a second mill. The presence of other orebodies to be mined at a later date made the first alternative impractical while the capital outlay for a second mill, when the present plant of approximately 850 tons per day was deemed sufficiently large for the total reserves, made the second alternative also unwise. It was decided to retain the mill in the originals location and continue to move the ore to it. The idea of driving an inclined adit from the surface to the bottom of the orebody suitable for truck haulage and big enough to allow the passage of all mechanical equipment was conceived. Among the apparent advantages of such an incline were: 1— Direct haulage from the stope to the mill without rehandling. 2—Elimination of virtually all grizzlies. Trucking from underground to the mill would do away with all hoppers, chutes, gates, and skips and make the maximum rock size dependent solely on the size of the shovel dipper at the mine and the crusher opening at the mill. 3—Less secondary blasting would be needed. 4—Ease of transporting equipment and supplies underground. Shovels and trucks could be taken through the incline intact. 5—Equipment could be brought to the surface for repairs and servicing without loss of time. The same advantages of ease in moving would be present in the handling of men, steel, powder, and supplies. 6—There would be far less difficulty in increasing the amount of tonnage that could be moved by truck up an incline than would be found in attempting to increase the capacity of a shaft. 7—All the broken ore in the stopes would serve as bin capacity, as it would take the breakdown of all of the loading and hauling equipment to have the same effect as a delay in shaft hoisting. 8—All danger of men being trapped in the mine as a result of shaft fire or power stoppage would be eliminated. 9— Virtually all trouble from severe winter conditions would be eliminated by the direct haul underground to the mill. The decision was made to proceed with the driving of an inclined adit. The topography of the surface between the orebody and the mill was such that it was possible to locate the portal at a point 170 ft above the mine floor and 1800 ft horizontally from the central point of the orebody to the south and 2500 ft from the mill to the north. A grade of 10 pct was found to be optimum for continuous truck haulage when the various factors of speed, safety, and truck maintenance were all considered. The incline as driven was consequently 1700 ft long on 10 pct grade and 12 ft high by 17 ft wide in cross section. The tunnel-driving equipment was chosen so that it could be used in mining after the completion of the tunnel. Drilling was done with a jumbo with two Joy jibs mounting 3-in. drills, loading with an Allis-Chalmers diesel-powered, front-end loader of approximately 11/4-yd capacity, and hauling by Koehring Dumptor trucks of 8-ton capacity, diesel-powered. The width of the tunnel allowed the end loader and Dumptor to be placed abreast. Since the Dumptors can be driven either forward or backward with equal facility, loading was accomplished without turning around either machine throughout the loading operation. The crew in addition to the tunnel foreman was comprised of three men per shift at the start and in the later work, four men. Each crew could perform any part of the working cycle. If the drilling was completed and the round blasted in the middle of a shift, the same men would proceed with the loading and hauling. Since the mine already had been drained to the bottom levels, no water was encountered. At the halfway point the tunnel was widened for approximately 100 ft to permit trucks to pass. The total cost of the tunnel excluding the capital outlay for equipment, which was all continued in use in the subsequent mine operation, was $60,363.00 or $35.50 per ft. The tunnel was completed at the end of June, 1949 and has been in continuous use since that time. In the five months from July to November inclusive, 106,049 tons have been transported to the mill or an average of 835 tons per day. No unforeseen disadvantages have been encountered and the advantages which had been predicated before the adit's construction have been more than realized. As previously mentioned, the deposit is worked by the room-and-pillar system with occasional faces up to 125 ft high. Except in driving development drifts when diesel-powered, front-end loaders such as were used in the tunnel are employed, all shoveling is done by Yz-yd boom-dipper type shovels electrically driven. These units need a width of 25 ft and a height of 14 ft in which to operate. All hauling is by diesel trucks, mainly Koehring Dump-tors. The year 1927 witnessed numerous developments of significance in California. The State's shut-in production increased from an average of 58,000 bbl. daily in January to a maximum of 93,000 bbl. daily in August, and a total of about 25,000,000 bbl. was withheld from the market during the year. This not only lessened the effect of large production at Hunt-ington Beach, Seal Beach and Alamitos Heights, but also was a most effective conservation move. Since 1922, it is estimated that approximately 100,000,000 bbl. of oil that would otherwise have been produced have been held in the ground. I. Outstanding Field Developments of 19271 1. Production increased from about 10,000 bbl. daily in January, to a peak of 66,000 bbl. in June. Huntington Beach finished the year 1926 with a production of 102,000 bbl. daily, which declined to 60,000 bbl. by the end of 1927. Due to production in these three areas and the tempering effect of shutting in numerous wells, the California production curve for 1927 was held at a fairly even level. The desirability of bringing about greater uniformity in specifications governing iron and steel is generally recognized, and has found expression within recent years, in the efforts of numerous technical societies in that direction. When the International Association for Testing Materials was organized at Zurich in 1895, a committee was appointed, charged as follows: " On the basis of existing specifications, to seek methods and means for the introduction of international specifications for testing and inspecting iron and steel of all kinds." The American representation on this international committee consisted originally of five, and now of eight members. In view of the magnitude and importance of the subject, the Executive Committee of the American Section of the International Association for Testing Materials, since incorporated as the American Society for Testing Materials, appointed a committee of 34 members, including the American members of the above-named international committee, to frame standard American specifications for iron and steel. This committee reported on specifications for (1) Structural Steel for ridges and Ships; (2) Structural Steel for Buildings; (3) Open-Hearth Boiler-Plate and Rivet-Steel; (4) Steel Rails; (5) Steel Splice-Bars; (6) Steel Axles; (7) Steel Tires; (8) Steel Forgings; (9) Steel Castings ; (10) Wrought-Iron. These specifications were designed to be fairly representa-tive of the best current American practice, and were adopted by letter-ballot of the Society in August, 1901. The leading engineering societies have participated at various times in the discussion of these specifications and have lent valuable assistance through the appointment of special committees on like, or closely related, subjects. THE treatment of Balbach-Thum slimes at Copper Cliff by the Ontario Refining. Co. is of interest because it differs considerably from methods usually employed for the recovery of fine gold from parting-plant slimes. Owing to the comparatively high percentages of pal-ladium and platinum, wet methods are used to remove the greater proportion f these metals before electrolytic refining in the Wohlwill cells. THE PLANT The platinum-metals department, Wohlwill room, and gold-melting room extend along the north side f the silver refinery and are separated from the parting plant by a glass partition (Figs. 1 and 2). The platinum-metals department resembles a laboratory built on a large scale, with the various pieces of equipment laid out on terraces to facilitate handling. Because of the corrosive nature of the solutions, chemical stoneware is used throughout. Elevation of acids is accom-plished by means of Mariotte bottles. On the top level are three steam-jacketed stoneware kettles of 50-gal. capacity, also a packed tower. One kettle is used for digesting the slimes while the remaining kettles are used for precipitating the gold. The dissolver is equipped with a treated concrete hood, which is connected to the flue system. Gases are drawn off through the packed tower by means of a 6-in. stoneware exhaust fan. A 15 per cent solution of sodium carbonate is continually circulated through the tower. On the intermediate level are two suction filters, one for removing silver chloride and the other for the gold sand. The filter medium consists of an asbestos pad covered with a filter paper on which is a layer of twill.
