There are two types of ore transportation systems in use at Newmont's Magma Copper Co. San Manuel mine in Arizona-rail-mounted, box-type rotary cars and the newer rail-mounted, bottom-dumping ASEA cars. Though the cost per car for the ASEA units greatly exceeds the cost per rotary car, the advantages of the ASEA units, including much faster dump times, have made the ASEA system a successful alternative at the San Manuel mine. The rotary system of ore transportation has been in use at San Manuel since production began in 1956. The system employs 7.9-m3 box-type cars to transport ore by rail to shaft pocket areas. A rotating dumping mechanism turns three cars at a time upside down to empty them, and returns them to an upright position. Trains of 15 cars each are dumped in about six minutes. Each 15-car train is pulled by an 18-t rated trolley locomotive. There are about 400 rotary cars in service at San Manuel and the system is used for the majority of ore haulage. This well-proven rotary method was instrumental in achieving the December 1977 world record of 272 Mt hoisted from an underground copper mine. Magma Copper Co. began using ASEA cars in late 1977. Designed by ASEA of Sweden, the cars are built for San Manuel by Kasper-Hall Manufacturing Co. in Tucson. The cars basic design feature is a hinged floor that opens at the side as the car is pulled through the dump. As it passes over the dump, a fifth wheel attached to the hinged floor (opposite the hinges) travels along a rail in the dump. This rail dips down into the pocket and then returns to track level. As the fifth wheel travels along the rail, the car floor opens, the car dumps, and the floor is then returned to track level. As the car is dumping, the body remains suspended over the pocket by wheel rollers attached to each side of the dump. Trains of 10 cars each are emptied in about 45-50 seconds. Each ASEA train is pulled by an 18-t rated trolley locomotive, adapted at San Manuel to allow it to pass through the ASEA dump. At minimal cost, "wings" are welded to each side of the locomotive. These wings suspend the locomotive over the pocket as the train passes through the dump. Advantages of the ASEA System Major design characteristics of the ASEA and rotary systems are shown in the accompanying table. The comparison points out some of the following advantages demonstrated by the ASEA system. • Faster dumping-An ASEA train dumps in 50 seconds, while a rotary train takes at least six minutes. There is no stopping or starting when dumping an ASEA train. The train enters the dump area, dumps, and leaves in one continuous motion-in contrast to rotary trains which must stop and start five times to dump. With the rotary system, three cars are spotted in the dump mechanism by remote control. When the cars are in place, the train operator activates the dump, the cars are turned over, and then returned to an upright position. This process is repeated until all 15 cars in the train are emptied.

Slope monitoring has been an important issue in static terrestrial lidar for some time. Several solutions for monitoring the progress of a slide have been devised over the years. All of these solutions have required users to be in the field operating the lidar equipment. This paper presents a new system developed using the Optech ILRIS-HD or ILRIS-LR lidar and the scripting language of PolyWorks to produce an autonomous slope monitoring system. This system has proven invaluable in detecting and alerting mine workers to potential danger within their mine sites. It has already been deployed in two mine sites and is scheduled to be installed at a third.

THE present article makes no claim to be exhaustive, since it cannot contain all the knowledge which scientists and manufacturers of the compounds of the rare earths have gained. The following notes are, therefore, simply an attempt to ascertain andclearly record the occurrence, properties, and uses of the more important of the rare earths, with a special reference to their commercial values and the industries based upon them.HISTORYIt was the mine manager, Gcyer, of Stockholm, who, in 1788, first drew attention to a black mineral which had been found in a quarry near Roslagen, in Sweden. In 1805 Klapproth received some specimens of this mineral, which he declared to be a newmineral. Subsequently Gadolin, professor of chemistry at Abo, analyzed the same mineral, and determined the presence of an unknown earth resembling alumina and lime. He named the mineral ytterbite, and afterwards gadolinite. Klapproth has alsothe merit of having detected (1804) another rare earth, which he named ochroit-earth, found in the Bastnas mine, near Riddarhyttan, in Wcstmannland, Sweden. Chromite ore processing tailings and low-grade manganese ores are typically considered waste due to their limited or negligible utility, leading to environmental and storage concerns. Researchers globally have explored various methods to utilize or upgrade these wastes, particularly because dumping chromite ore has been linked to severe health issues through Cr(VI) leaching. Individually, these ores lack economic value, and there has not been research on simultaneously reducing both low-grade ores. In this study, the focus lies on smelting these ores together, aiming to create a precursor alloy for 200 series stainless steel scrap. Initial research indicated the potential for scrap formation, validated through lab experiments with varying coke rate, basicity, and holding time. The investigation discovered that smelting this combination could yield a metal product comprising 59% Fe, 24.93% Cr, 7.56% Mn, 0.62% Ni, and 0.93% Si. The optimum basicity was found to be 0.6 with 80% recovery. Notably, this process eliminates intermediate steps in 200 series stainless steel production, potentially reducing overall CO2 emissions. This proposed method represents a cleaner, sustainable approach to repurpose these two waste ores, projecting a net profit of USD 330 per ton.

Coking coals are very much in demand on a world wide basis, particularly the higher rank coking coals, which form an important part of many coking blends and which represent the smallest portion of the world'scoking coal reserves. Conventional coke oven plants, using these coals, will predominate at least until the next century.Blending schemes for conventional coking require definition of the basic properties of coals so that the factors influencing the carbonization behaviour may be assessed. Several concepts, which are relatively simple, ate available to help promote a better understanding of the bask factors controlling -coke strength and are also useful in suggesting possible lines to follow in the blending of coals for coking.The interpretation of carbonization behaviour and coke structure in terms of petrographically defined coal rank and type provide a basis for planning and exploitation of coal Teserves. The optimum parameters for coking are suggested as follows.1. Type- Vitrinite content (% m.m.f. by volume) 55 ± 5%2. Rank- Mean maximum reflectance of vitrinite 1.30 ± O.10% Carbon content of vitrinite (% d.m.m.f.) 87·5 ± 1·0%The value of a coal should be assessed in relation to all its possible uses in blends. This is a more realistic and productive approach, as compared with considering coals only in relation to the results of blending with"good" coking coals. The production of a homogeneous self-fluxing sinter is an important step in iron making processes. A good sinter should have good permeability and reducibility and has to keep those characteristics for a certain time. An early melt down of the sinter in the blast furnace, where its solid state reduction is essential, would cause many problems such as low permeability and reductibility. Nevertheless, the important factors that influence these characteristics, such as the chemistry of the sinter and the fluxing effect during sintering and sinter reduction conditions have not yet been clarified. In today's new reality where many new minor components such as Al2O3 and MgO enter to the sinter through raw materials, the quantification of the fluxing effects during sintering becomes even more important. In this work, the liquidus surface and phase relations of the sinter primary melts in the CaO-FeO-Fe203-Si02 system at sintering conditions have been quantified. The fluxing effect of oxygen potential, Al2O3 and MgO has also been quantified by the means of some practical diagrams that can directly help the optimization of the sintering processes.

We are so familiar with water in its liquid and its solid form, that we seldom think of it as a mineral, and still less as a mineral product of any considerable industrial importance, though in the form of ice it is mined and stored up in enormous quantities yearly. The industry is peculiarly American, and in no other country has the business of cutting and storing ice been so well systematized and perfected. The interest has grown steadily from year to year, until it has attained large proportions, the annual production being counted in millions of tons, requiring, in the aggregate, a large investment of capital in all the Northern States. It gives employment, also, to thousands of men and horses, in the depth of winter, when farming work cannot be carried on. Ice is not only a luxury, but a necessity, in our climate, and is indispensable in many manufacturing operations: and finds constantly increasing applications and uses. As the industry has grown, so the necessity for suitable implements and tools has grown with it, and it has become necessary to systematize and cheapen the methods of handling such a large amount of material with rapidity and economy. As the industry is properly a branch of mining, and as our mining literature does not, to my knowledge, contain any description of the methods and appliances used in it, it seems desirable to place a brief description on record in our Transactions, and I therefore offer to the Institute the following outline description, based partly upon observations for several years past of the methods and processes employed, and partly upon the information obtained from prominent ice-miners and from the manufacturers of ice-tools. My acknowledgments are particularly due to the firm of W. T. Wood & Co., of Arlington, Massachusetts, for much information in detail, and also to the Knickerbocker Ice Company, of Philadelphia. The wood-cut blocks used in the illustration of this paper, have been kindly lent by both of these firms. The sequence of operations in getting ice is as follows : 1. Wetting down a light snow. 2. Scraping off an excess of snow, if present. 3. Marking out the field. 4. Ploughing and cross-ploughing. 5. Cutting the channel and detaching large floes.

If anyone has any questions to ask Mr. McClure I am sure he will be glad to answer them at this time. MR. WEITZEL: I want to ask Mr. McClure whether in the instance he described by-passing the drier, whether there was any rest period between the crusher and the furnace, whether the powdered coal that was not dry was allowed to rest in the pipe or was blown directly into combustion chambers. MR. McCLURE: Yes, it moved directly; there might have been some difference had we given it an opportunity to rest. We just had to get in and get out so as not to interfere with operations. MR. WEITZEL: Your idea is, even though you did use a high moisture lignite, you could store it under water if you eliminated surface moisture later. That is a new idea to me; I always had thought that you had to reduce the moisture down under 2 per cent, and to try to store it with anything more than that, any higher moisture, you would have to break the stuff loose again, as it gets so hard it won't move. McCLURE: It might develop I am absolutely wrong; I am just saying what I observed, and I may have had some unusual condition, which I did not detect; something may actually develop which will make my statement of drying lignite entirely wrong. "Maceral separation is one possible technique to expand coking coal resources, either by increasing the blending ratio of non- or slightly caking coal or rationally utilizing the coking coal according to the different behaviors of macerals in coking. The success of maceral enrichment for a given coal using flotation is dependent on the differences in flotation kinetic rate among macerals. This paper presents the flotation rates and zeta potentials of the vitrinite-rich and inertiniterich maceral concentrates obtained from six coal samples of different ranks – from high-volatile B bituminous coal with mean random vitrinite reflectance (Rrandom) of 0.64 percent to low-volatile bituminous coal with Rrandom of 1.73 percent – using a float-sink procedure. The flotation results show that vitrinite-rich concentrates can be produced in tap water using froth flotation only with frother for the high-volatile B and A bituminous coal samples, but there was no good performance for the high-volatile C bituminous and medium- to low-volatile bituminous coal samples. The zeta potential results show that froth flotation could probably separate the high-volatile C bituminous coal samples well by adjusting pH, but there was no good performance for the higher-rank coal samples. IntroductionMetallurgical coke is used in blast furnaces for steel production and is produced by the carbonization of coking coal. Because caking coals are rare and expensive, they are often blended with non- or slightly caking coals. Considering the tight supply-demand situation for coking coal in China, it is important and urgent to develop highly efficient technologies for rationally utilizing and expanding coking coal resources (Mochizuki et al., 2013)."

"Abstract A seven storey Northbridge area of Perth, Western Australia presented residential apartment complex located in the an opportunity for a novel application of Cutter Soil Mix technology (CSM). The development included a two-level basement for car parking which covered the full site area. However, the basement was also required to extend under an existing single story heritage building. Soil conditions comprised 2m of fill overlying medium dense to dense sands that in turn were overlying a very stiff clay stratum at approximately 14-16m depth. The ground water table was located at a depth of approximately 1m below the natural surface level.A site boundary consisting of a reinforced CSM retention system and was designed and installed to allow the excavation to proceed to basement level. Two rows of temporary soils anchors or inclined struts were required to achieve this. A CSM support system for the heritage building was also designed and constructed to provide temporary support during excavation and permanent construction works. The brief for the contract works emphasised that it was vital that settlements of the heritage building be kept within strict limits.CSM is a relatively new introduction to the Australian construction market, using a modified trench cutter to mix a binder slurry with in situ soils, generally to form cut-off walls, retaining walls and soil improvement works. This project is understood to be first application of the CSM for underpinning work in Australia.This paper discusses the site background details leading to the decision by the client to adopt CSM technology, and the design and construction aspects to meet the challenges offered by this project.Introduction190 Newcastle St is a 7-level residential apartment complex located in the Northbridge area of Perth, Western Australia. Jointed rock slopes are generally stable, as there is no freedom of movement for blocks of rock. In an open- pit mining environment, blasting opens up space into which blocks of rock can fail, resulting in the common occurrence of slope failure. Prior to the blasting of a trim pattern, the immediate highwall is scaled, where loose rock material is removed by means of a mechanical scaler. As mining of the pit progresses, the height of the scaled highwall from the pit floor progressively increases. These highwalls are never scaled again for the remainder of the pit life, and time-dependant deterioration contributes to these highwalls becoming subject to rockfall and, sometimes, slope failure. This paper documents the development of a South African innovation, a remote-controlled mechanical highwall scaler, a world first for the mining industry. The scaler will enable open-pit highwalls to be scaled from crest to toe whenever the need arises. It will reduce the risk associated with highwalls and deliver on the Anglo American promise of producing safe, profitable platinum.

MR. McCLURE: Mr. Chairman, you sprang a surprise on me; I really came over here for a good time. Gentlemen, I am not at all qualified to pose as an expert on pulverized fuel; I have merely been making some rather interesting observations, and unfortunately at the present time, a great deal of substantial data, the technical data, I don't happen to have with me; it is still in the process of being calculated, but I will be very glad to tell you some of the observations as I have made them, and in as truthful and complete a way as I can. The question of how we would handle fuel became a very pressing subject in this new Valmont electric plant, which is now under progress. We have studied the methods of burning fuel for a number of years on different types of stokers at the existing plants in Denver; we are burning it with a natural draft chain grate and with underfeed and with forced draft chain grates, and I am very frank to confess at the present time that I have no answer as far as stokers are concerned for a better solution of the problem of burning lignite. In other words, I could not tell you that this or that is a better type of stoker to use for that coal. However, to boil the thing down, after considerable trials, the underfed stoker was chosen as the one most adaptable for the utilizing of lignite fuel if stokers are to be used. In other words, the chain grate was put aside. I might say in support of the chain grate, the prime reason for which that type of stoker was condemned, as far as lignite goes, is the initial investment charge and the large maintenance which is involved.

(communication to the Secretary*). -We must keep in mind, in balancing the savings-to be anticipated by the most efficient combustion of gas, the best heat absorption by stoves or boilers, and by heat conservation of the thermal equivalent carried in. blast-furnace gas-against the cost in operation, maintenance, depreciation and interest charges of the equipment required to realize the savings, that in boilers and hot-blast stoves we are basing our economies upon two different, combustion phenomena. In a boiler, evaporating water at a heat efficiency of 70 per cent., approximately 47,550 B.t.u. is consumed per boiler horsepower. Taking the blast, furnace gas cited in the above paper, we are using about 38 ¾ lb. of cold-washed gas per boiler horsepower. Using the hot-cleaned gas, the same equivalent heat is furnished by 34 1b. of the gas , This leaves of the 38 ¾ lb. required in the case of cold-washed gas, 4 ¾ lb. or 6,650 B.t.u. available for raising more steam when dry-hot gas is used, which means that an equivalent amount of coal firing can be dispensed with. Per ton of iron, this figure 2/3 X 12,000/38.75 X 4.75 = 980 lb. gas or 1,372,000 B.t.u. or 100 lb. coal. At $1.50 per ton of coal, the net saving per ton of pig iron produced by the use of dry-hot over wet-cold cleaning will, therefore, be about $0.06 2/3. At a stove heating 8,500 lb. of air per toil iron from 150° F., one-quarter of the dry-hot cleaned gas, or 3,000 lb., would heat the air to 1,450° F. 3,000 X 1,400 X 0.70 = (8,500 X 0.255) = 1,300. The cold-wet gas would heat the same amount of air to 1,280° F. 3,000 X 1,225 X 0.70 = (8,500 X.0.255) = 1,130.

As the mining industry moves further into developing countries in search of new resources, its role in international development is coming under increasing scrutiny. This is a trend that is likely to accelerate, along with the potential for headaches among managers in the industry. Public interest in development and environmental issues is rising as faith in “big business” falls. This has strengthened nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) campaigning for sustainable development. And it has put more pressure on banks, governments and development agencies to curb corporate misdemeanors. Developing world governments are also becoming emboldened to reject previously agreed terms they do not consider equitable. The mining industry has begun to formulate a response to these pressures but must go much further. Societal and environmental issues must move from public relations to core strategic thinking. Abiding by rules or codes is not a relevant response. Instead, genuine support for sustainable development is required. This will involve delegating the responsibility for engaging with local communities to on-the-ground staff and developing a dialogue with local stakeholders rather than conducting an initial assessment and disengaging.

The Gippsland Basin is unique in Australia in that it is a major resource based industry centre within a sensitive and special environmental context supplying Melbourne, a major urban/industrial environment with most of its energy 'on-line'. The environmental effects of the supply systems are generally local and mostly affect only those who are directly or indirectly dependent on the upstream systems. The major urban metropolis which is served remains largely unaware of the environmental impacts of the system upon which it is dependent, except when specific attention is drawn to them as in the case of the Latrobe Valley Outfall, algal blooms in the Gippsland Lakes, etc. This paper discusses the environmental context within which the energy industries operate, the environmental legislative framework which applies, the likely environmental impacts and some solutions. The energy resources of the Gippsland Basin occur in an area where the physical environment exhibits a wide variety of inherent energy states in its physical and biological regimes. The off-shore regions of the oil and gas platforms has to be able to withstand the wind and wave energy generated in a shallow sea in a confined waterway lying athwart the main current and climatic stream. The coastline includes the delicately balanced quiescent environments of Corner Inlet with its 'wilderness' tourism industry and the powerful surf and long shore drift and dunes of Ninety Mile Beach.

Soldier pile and lagging is a conventional means of temporary excavation shoring. Timber lagging design has traditionally been based upon the designer's experience or empirical rules. One such method is the Goldberg Zoino chart used by the Federal Highway Administration. Most of these methods restrict the designer to a consistent soil profile, certain pile spacing, construction grade timber lagging, and limited depth. The methods do not take into account surcharge loads or a variety of other factors that could arise. A designer working outside of ordinary circumstances with unusual loads, varying soil conditions, or alternate lagging materials has difficulty estimating lateral earth pressures. In rigid earth retention systems, lateral earth pressure is generally assumed to be constant along the length of the wall. In soldier pile and lagging systems, the lagging is often considerably less stiff than the steel soldier piles. As the lagging deflects, the soil tends to bridge between the stiffer elements resulting in a lower pressure on the lagging. Several previously published methods by others for determining this reduced pressure are summarized and discussed. These methods typically consist of using a portion of the active earth pressure in several different pressure distributions. A simple theoretical model is presented for determination of lateral earth pressures on wood lagging. The model is based on a three-dimensional "silo" shaped sliding wedge analysis. Results of the model are compared with other published methods. The model compares well with these methods which cover the normal spectrum of design situations. In addition, the model can be used to estimate lateral earth pressures outside typical situations.

With the decline in fine diamond production from the Argyle mine in Australia, there is a greater emphasis on efficiently treating the finer size fractions through a DMS circuit. Although it is generally well understood that smaller diameter cyclones are more appropriate for this application, practical results do not necessarily meet this expectation. In this paper the operational performance of particular sized cyclones throughout the group was compared. Based on the results there is evidence that under certain practical operating conditions, small cyclones are not necessarily best for fine size particle treatment, particularly given the production pressures faced by all mines. However, there seems to be considerable merit in using larger sized cyclones, which tend to exhibit less performance variability, irrespective of operation conditions.

(written discussion t).-This paper is a discussion of some of the results of a recent investigation1 of Prof. Zay Jeffries, and of his interpretation and generalizations from these results. This work I have followed with great interest and with appreciation of its value in clarifying our views on the nature of deformation in metals and its relation to structure. It is only by such close study of the relation of structure to mechanical properties that we shall ever be able to describe the latter in terms of their ultimate elements, and thus explain what are still mysteries in the mechanical behavior of metals; experiment and thought along these lines are in my opinion of the utmost value. If I, therefore, here record some of the difficulties I have experienced in understanding some of the generalizations of Prof. Jeffries, it is only in order that perhaps from the discussion may emerge a clearer and more consistent statement of hypothesis or theory in explanation of the facts discovered by him.
