Lead blast-furnace bullion cools to near its freezing point in an operation known as copper drossing or hot drossing usually contains 0.02-0.06% copper. The removal of this copper is usually carried out in a batch operation known as sulfur drossing. Sulfur is stirred into the bullion at temperatures near its freezing point, and the dross of copper and lead sulfides that floats to the surface is skimmed off manually. A thermodynamic model has been developed to simulate the copper drossing. The phase diagram of Pb-Cu-S system has been calculated, and the effects of the process parameters, such as temperature, copper content, and sulfur content, on the drossing process have been simulated and discussed.

Troy Resources acquired the Karouni Gold Project in Guyana, South America in 2014 and immediately proceeded to a Pre-Feasibility Study and project implementation. The study considered two open pit mines feeding a conventional carbon in leach (CIL) gold plant with a capacity of 1Mtpa. The study assumed a total of 2.61 million tonnes of ore with an average grade of 3.84 g/t gold with a recovered gold production of 303,526 ounces over a three year mine life.The project development involved drilling metallurgical test holes, securing second-hand major pieces of equipment where suitable, and arranging shipping to Guyana. The remote location meant logistical considerations were paramount. The plant consists of conventional two-stage crushing with single stage ball milling and a gravity circuit. The tailings circuit includes DETOX.The extremely high rainfall presented challenges with water management and the necessity to dispose of clean water to the environment. The DETOX was also mandatory due to the highly sensitive environment and past history in the area. The criticality of this meant that in the design, any cyanide in the tailings would precipitate in a plant shutdown.Lessons were learned and the project has been both profitable and successful for Troy Resources in a new operating location. A new method, the gliding cylinder method, was proposed as a wide range viscometer for the measurements of molten salts, slags, and glasses. The method consists of two coaxial cylinders, cylindrical bob and a vessel containing a liquid sample. There is a narrow gap between bob and vessel. When the vessel moves against the bob, the generated force on the bob consists of three types of resistance: (1) Stokes’s resistance on the bob, (2) a capillary flow resistance though an annular gap between vessel and bob, and (3) lubricating resistance in a gap. The last two can be calculated on a theoretical basis but the first cannot be estimated by a simple calculation since a wall effect did not calculate easily. However, it can be assumed that the generated force depends on both the viscosity of a liquid and velocity of the vessel. Thus, the relation between viscosity and a force at desired velocity of the vessel was measured using several standard reference materials including glycerol aqueous solutions and standard reference oils. The results depended on the magnitude of the gap between the bob and the vessel. For the wider gap, it was shown that the viscosity is a linear function of a gradient of force with respect to a vessel velocity. In contrast, if the gap is small, the viscosity depends on the gradient (of force with respect to velocity). This implies that the non-linear phenomena would occur in Stokes resistance. Though detailed analysis is in a further investigation, a calibration method can be applied to determine the viscosity by this method, because good correlation was obtained among these quantities. Viscosity of molten salts, such as NaNO3and ZnCl2was measured by this method as high temperature demonstration. "Large quantities of slag are produced every year and dumped on slag heaps around the world, posing a potential environmental threat due to contained heavy metals content. Slags are waste minerals produced during furnace smelting of minerals. The contained values of base metals may be released into the environment under natural weathering conditions polluting ground and underground water. Copper losses into slag are a continuous problem in pyrometallurgical smelting operations. Due to shortage of ore concentrate, various mining operations have initiated the recovery of copper from dumped slag. The typical process uses crushing, milling and flotation. These operations create excessive liner wear rates during crushing and milling because the bond work index of copper slag is 22 kWh/t and this is considered a very hard slag. The process also has reduced flotation recoveries and requires high flotation reagent consumption. The present work shows that digestion of the milled copper slag slurry with concentrated sulphuric acid at a temperature of 250oC forms a solid cake and leaching of the solid cake with water is a possible option. However, the consumption of sulphuric acid can have a considerable cost on the recovery process. This can be limited by producing a leach residue containing gypsum and silicate materials as amorphous silica which are suitable for use as an additive for Portland cement. Laboratory results show that 90% copper recoveries can be achieved. The leaching is conducted to prevent silica gel formation and iron co-extraction. Leaching is optimum if silica gel-free solutions and good filterable residue are obtained. INTRODUCTION Slag is a waste by-product of smelting and converting operations in metallurgical plants. Both smelting and converting operations are aimed at iron separation from base metal sulphides in non-ferrous metallurgy. The iron sulphide component of the ore or concentrate is oxidized to iron oxide at higher temperatures in the molten form, and then fluxed with silica and other oxide rock minerals to produce fayalite (2FeO•SiO2) slag (Schlesinger et al., 2011). Slags are generally deposited on dumps and considered to be unreactive materials. Smelter copper slag contains significant concentrations of several potentially toxic elements, including arsenic, lead, cadmium, barium, zinc and copper. These elements can be released into the environment under natural weathering conditions and cause pollution of soils, surface waters and groundwater (David, 1998)."

Correias transportadoras de alta temperatura são ativos críticos para a pelotização devido ao prejuízo que sua falha pode trazer para a produção. Nesse sentido, deve-se avaliar a vida útil da correia em uso, visando, principalmente, auxiliar sua manutenção, e nesse contexto o presente trabalho tem como proposta utilizar a caracterização dos componentes e o estudo da degradação térmica do material da cobertura de correias transportadoras de alta temperatura. As caracterizações foram realizadas de modo comparativo entre três tipos distintos de correias transportadoras de alta temperatura fornecidas para a VALE S.A. Os reforços das correias foram caracterizados por FT-IR para análise qualitativa do polímero. De maneira semelhante, as borrachas foram caracterizadas por meio da análise do produto de pirólise via FT-IR e a densidade de ligações cruzadas por meio da técnica de inchamento do polímero e aplicação da equação de Flory-Rhener, o que ajudou a justificar o comportamento das diferentes marcas de correia perante a degradação térmica, estudada em um trabalho anterior. A partir desses resultados e utilizando dados de variação das propriedades mecânicas do material em função do tempo e temperatura de processo, pôde-se avaliar a taxa de dano causado a cada correia e, aplicando-se dados reais de processo, avaliou-se o desempenho das correias em trabalho.

This work describes a novel mapping technique that allows the direct overlay of calculated local phase equilibria on micrographs of the physical system. The technique demonstrated integrates FactSage™, ver 8.2 (by Thermfact Ltd. and GTT-Technologies) phase equilibria calculations with mapped compositions determined by Scanning Electron Microscope – Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) to visually express calculated properties while preserving the spatial information of the sample. The developed methodology is used to analyse interrupted blast furnace softening and melting tests containing mixed burdens of lump and sinter. Tests are interrupted at 1300C and cooled to room temperature for analysis. Phases present at room temperature are analysed to infer the liquid fraction and phases present at high temperature. Analysis of the interface regions between the dissimilar burdens allows insights to be gained into the interaction mechanism. During the transition from solid to liquid, migration and interaction of liquid oxide across the interfaces of the dissimilar burdens has been observed and demonstrated to impact softening and melting performance. Specifically, interaction of the oxides generated by lump (primarily FeO, SiO2 and Al2O3) and sinter (primarily FeO, CaO, SiO2, Al2O3 and MgO) are analysed, and the occurrence of a range of new mineral phases such as merwinite, melilite, olivine and bredigite observed.

Regardless of the advantages of the Friction Stir Process (FSP), for age-hardened aluminum alloys, the mechanical properties such as hardness in the stir zone decreased after FSP due to the growth or dissolution of strengthening precipitates. Here, as a new technique, FSP was introduced to alloy copper nanopowders in Al7075 T651. Mechanical properties of copper nanopowder- alloyed Al7075 T651 together with micro and nanostructures were compared with those of as-FSPed Al7075 T651 using SEM, TEM, and Vickers hardness testing to understand structure-property relationships. It was observed that Vickers hardness of the stir zone in copper nanopowder alloyed Al7075 T651 increased by 20% compared to that of the heat affected zone, while the as-FSPed samples did not show a noticeable increase in hardness in the same zone. Xray mapping showed traces of copper nanopowder after the process. TEM is being used to verify if there was CuAl2 formed in the copper alloyed sample.

Highwall mining is an important coal mining method. It appears that upwards of 60 highwall miners are presently in operation, and they may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. A review of the Mines Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data over the 20 year period from 1983 to 2002 identified 9 fatalities attributable to auger and highwall mining of which inadequate ground control accounted for 1/3. In the past 5 years, 1 fatality occurred in highwall mining. Estimates of the manpower requirements in highwall mining suggest that its fatality rate is essentially the same as for surface coal mining, thus highwall mining appears to be a very safe modern mining method. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern, and operators are required to develop and follow an appropriate highwall mining ground control plan. The plans usually specify the following geotechnical parameters: hole width, maximum hole depth, maximum overburden depth, seam thickness, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. Calculated web pillar stability factor exceeded 1.3 for most designs evaluated. This study examined records from 5,289 highwall miner holes with a total completed footage of about 2,560,000 feet to understand the reasons for early pull out. Average lost footage is typically about 20% of planned footage. Only 35% of the holes reached planned depth, and 20% were short due to rockfalls. Water and adverse geology accounted for 15% of the losses. Mechanical/electrical problems, guidance, and slope stability problems accounted for the remaining 30%. Web pillar stability factor for these holes also exceeded 1.3 in 95% of cases. Best practices to avoid trapped miners include: avoid mining in stream valleys, avoid mining near outside corners, careful alignment of each hole and the use of an onboard guidance system. Several issues in highwall mining ground control require further investigation including highwall mining through old auger workings, highwall mining near old underground mines, multiple-seam and multiple lift highwall mining and finally the size and frequency of barrier pillars.

Chromium ore exploitation has commenced in 1948 in Albania and there are produced about 24.3 million tons up to the end of 2006. Last years the prices and need were increased notably. Main export of chromium ores and concentrates was accomplished respectively 114 500 ton and 13 000 ton in People Republic of China during 2006 year. Location, status, reserves and grade of chromium deposits of Albania are presented in the paper. Chromium ore enrichment is related with their composition and Cr2O3 content, as well as with market requests. Actually, high grade chromium ores with Cr2O3 content over 38% ~ 40% are directly exported or treated in metallurgy, but last time have been exported and chromium ores with 28% ~ 30% Cr2O3 content for the reason that dressing plants can not be operated for investment lack. High grade chromium ores have been treated in heavy media separation plant before 1990. It is presented flow sheet, figures and necessity to put in operation HMS plant in the paper. Actually, low grade chromium ores with content 16% ~ 20% Cr2O3 are not enriched for the lack of investments, but before 1990 they have been concentrated in dressing plants producing chromium concentrates grade 48% ~ 50% Cr2O3. In the paper are shown technological schemes and industrial figures during more than 20 years operation and possibilities to reconstruct these mineral processing plants. Only chromium mineral processing plant of Bulqiza is in operation using as raw material its old existing tailings. The flow sheet and figures show that are possibilities to increase recovery and grade of concentrate in the plant. Separation and concentration of slimes in suitable equipment gives visible improvement of Cr2O3 recovery. Several tests have been carried out with flotation and magnetic separation methods for enrichment of low grade chromium ores. Flow sheet and figures of mineral processing ores content olivine as gangue mineral are interesting, because combination of gravimetric with magnetic methods is necessary in this case. In the paper are presented the tests and good results of low chromium ore pre concentration. Metallurgical treatment of chromium ores to produce Ferro chrome, as well as technological process, figures, consume of electrical power and materials in Elbasani and Burreli furnaces are shown and necessary investments to treat in metallurgy all produced chromium ores in Albania are considered.

Oxygen and carbon isotope mapping of hydrothermally altered wall rocks was applied to the blind ore prospecting of skarn Pb-Zn deposits in the Kamioka mining district, centralJapan, where the wall rocks consist of heterogeneous rock units. The results (d18OSMOW of -1.1 to +17.3ë and d13CPDB of -5.0 to +4.8ë for limestones, and d18OSMOW of -0.8 to +12.5ë for silicate rocks) show isotope zonations of the wall rocks with depletions in heavy isotopes (18O and 13C) toward the centre of mineralization. The isotope zonations likely formed by interaction of migrating thermal waters with the wall rocks during the mineralisation. The heavy-isotope depleted zone, which indicates higher temperature or higher water-to-rock ratio of the system, occurs in the footwall of a fault, indicating that the fault played the role of main conduit of the ore-forming fluids. A heavy-isotope depleted zone was also found in an area, where significant mineralisation had yet to be identified. Recent drilling in this area has intercepted a zone with a grade of 16.0% Zn, 0.8% Pb, and 35g Ag per metric tonne at a depth of about 360 m.

A NUMBER of proposals have been made for the hydrometallurgical recovery of copper from flotation concentrates, but as yet no process has been developed that has demonstrated an ability to compete with the present smelting methods under ordinary conditions. The treat-ment of copper concentrates by hydrometallurgical methods is in general similar to that used in the present electrolytic zinc process and involves roasting, leaching with H2S04 solution, separation of solutions, control of impurities and electrodeposition. While many of these steps are simpler and more readily carried out for copper than for zinc, a number of inherent difficulties have prevented the general adoption of the process. To compete with smelting, the following problems must still be con-fronted, although many solutions for their have been proposed: (1) con-duction of the roast in such a way that leaching will give an extraction of copper comparable to that obtained by smelting; (2) regulation of the ferric iron content of the solutions during electrolysis; (3) disposal of the excess acid regenerated from the sulphates formed in roasting; (4) eco-nomical recovery of the precious metals from the leach residues. The roasting problem is largely one of preventing the formation of copper ferrites, CuO.Fe2O, and Cu20.Fe2O3, which are quite insoluble in dilute sulphuric acid. These ferrites are apparently formed' to a small extent even at low temperatures and above 650° C. their formation is rapid1. While it is possible to carry out laboratory roasts in such a way that less than 5 per cent of the total copper is present in the insoluble ferrite form, a closer temperature control is required than can readily be obtained in industrial furnaces. The flash" roasting effects and consequent high temperatures that occur as the calcine falls from hearth to hearth in the ordinary multiple-hearth roaster are probably largely responsible for the inevitable formation of some ferrites. The result is that in a commercial plant the extraction of copper would not average more than 90 per cent in a single 10 per cent H2SO4 leach. This is

"The Carswell structure, located in the western part of the Athabasca Basin, northern Saskatchewan, has been extensively explored since 1967. This exploration has been successful and lead to the discovery, in 1970, of the D sandstone-hosted unconformity related deposit. By the end of 1984, five additional basement-hosted unconformity related deposits had been delineated: the OP and N discovered in 1970, the Claude in 1971, the Dominique-Peter in 1981, and the Dominique-Janine in 1984. The D deposit has been mined out; the Claude open-pit has already produced more than 500 tonnes of uranium, the development of the Dominique-Peter underground mine (first phase) has been completed, and production from the latter started in 1985.All six deposits are located in the southern part of the Aphebian metamorphic core, 18 km in diameter, which has intruded at least 1250 metres of Helikian Athabasca Group sediments during a cryptoexplosion event at 480 Ma, unrelated to the emplacement of uranium mineralization. The metamorphic rocks, affected by the Hudsonian Orogeny, are divided in two lithostratrigraphic units: the Peter River gneiss, aluminous gneiss series, and the Earl River complex, mixed quartzofeldspathic and mafic gneiss series. A well developed regolith profile is recognizable in the south along the contact with the sandstone and inside the metamorphic core sometimes associated with conformable sandstone beds.Basement and sandstone-hosted uranium deposits show many similarities:-linkage to unconformity;-mineralogy and geochronology with a first phase mineralization characterized by a polymetallic sulphide-uraninite-brannerite assemblage dated at 1150 to 1050 Ma, a second phase characterized by a simple sulphide-uraninite assemblage dated at 890 to 820 Ma, and a third phase characterized by a pitchblende-hematite dated at 380 Ma; and,-linkage to early Hudsonian structures with remobilization of these structures during intense hydrothermal alteration resulting in Mg chlorite-illite halos."

A seismic monitoring network has been installed in western Colorado (USA) in the vicinity of three underground coal mines to (i) distinguish and characterize seismic activity as either mining related or naturally occurring, (ii) implement a real-time event monitoring and notification tool, and (iii) collect data for use in research studies aimed at quantifying impacts from mining-related and natural seismicity. These potential impacts include dynamic rock mass failures such as coal bumps as well as strong shaking in the vicinity of critical structures such as impoundment dams, reservoirs, mine seals, mine openings, and steep slopes. Examples of two damaging seismic events are presented and the mining and geologic factors attending these dynamic failures are described.

"IntroductionThis paper on the kata thermometer is issued by the Bureau of Mines on account of the general interest in this instrument and the fact that it is frequently used in studies of mine ventilation conditions with regard to comfort and health of miners. It has been used in the studies being conducted along this line by the Bureau of Mines on the effects of high temperatures and humidities of air in mine working on the comfort conditions, as well as in studies of atmospheric conditions in mine, railway and vehicular tunnels.The study of the various physiological responses of the human body to different degrees of temperature combined with different percentages of relative humility in still and in moving air, now being conducted at the Pittsburgh experiment station of the bureau in the research laboratory of the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, cooperating with the Bureau of and the U. S. Public Health Service, presents an added opportunity of investigating the instruments that have been devised to measure atmospheric conditions as they affect the comfort and health of human beings.The ordinary mercury thermometer, as pointed out by Heberden3 almost hundred years ago is a very inadequate instrument for measuring the physiological effects of atmospheric conditions. It merely accounts for that part of the body heat lost by raliation and convection, while as a matter of fact greater part of the body heat resulting from the metabolic process within the body is eliminated by means of evaporation from the surface of the body."

It is suggested that the binary alloy systems of transition metals may be classified into groups according to "excess energy"E. For systems with positive ?E, the Laves phase, the TiNi3-, the TiCu3- and the Cudu-type rich in the smaller atom and the TizNi-type rich in the larger atom may exist. For systems with negative ?E and composed of two components of different crystal structures, the X, the Cr3O and the phase may exist on the side of the phase digrattz rich in the component with the higher "solubility factor" value am! the Cudu-type and the disordered hcp phase on the other side; if the crystal structure of two components is the same, the Cudu-type may exist on both sides. For systems with weakly positive ?E and cotnposed of different crystal structures, the u phase and the MgCd3-type may replace the Laves phase and the other types; the X, the Cr3O and the a phase may also exist. Finally, the equirnolar compounds of the CuAu- and the CsC1-type may exist irrespective of the sign of ?E. THERE are many factors which play a major role in the formation of binary intermediate phases in alloys, such as the crystal structure, the electronic structure, the atomic size and the electrochemical factor. To find the simultaneous effects of all these factors on the formation of intermediate phases of every metal would be a difficult task, especially because only a small fraction of experimental facts necessary for the complete formulation is known at present. Thus the past surveys of intermediate phases have been usually confined to few metals, several types of intermediate phases and some but not all controlling factors. In a previous paper1 the idea of "solubility factor" of metals was introduced. Although the suggested values are tentative and empirical, the formation of a continuous series of solid solutions in metals could be correlated with the interplay among the atomic size factor, the solubility factor and the crystal structure factor. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate qualitatively the interplay of these factors in the formation of binary intermediate phases among transition metals. FACTORS CONSIDERED The Crystal Structure Factor. With rare earths excluded, the transition metals are classified into three common crystal structures listed in Table I. The feasibility of breaking hard rock by thermal weakening and subsequent mechanical impacting was tested, Field tests at a basalt quarry in Dresser, Wis., demonstrated that large hard-rock blocks (5 by 5 by 5 ft) could be effectively reduced in size by this method. A series of secondary breakage tests, using air-propane heating, resulted in an average heating cost of $0.36 per ton. This combination energy approach provides an alternate means of size reduction of large hard-rock boulders for quarry and for underground are chute and grizzly operations where mechanical methods, used alone, are ineffective.

Although aluminum is easily leached from calcined clay with boiling mineral acids, the presence of fines and slimes in the leached residue has hindered the application of acid leaching processes. A feed preparation method was, therefore, devised that provided a dense, smooth-surfaced, fine-grained clay. The important factors affecting feed quality were determined to be (1) crushing the raw clay to the size desired for the leaching process, (2) moistening the crushed clay with a fine mist of water while tumbling on a rotating disk, (3) drying the misted clay, and (4) calcining the dried clay at 750° C in a fluidized bed. Clay treated by this method was leached with HCI, and its residue was washed by water displacement in 4-ft-deep beds. Bed permeabilities on the order of 47 darcys or 4.6 x 10-7 cm2 were obtained with the leached residues.

This seven-chapter document is the first volume of a two-volume report that presents a comprehensive outline of coal-mine electrical power systems from theory to practice. Together, the two volumes contain the vital aspects that go into planning and designing a mine power system. After a short introductory chapter, Chapter 2 discusses the history of electrical use in mining and introduces "typical" mine- power-system arrangements. Chapter 3, 4, and 5 supply basic information on electrical theory, circuit analysis, and motors. Next, the Grounding and Distribution Chapters detail unique aspects of mine power systems. Elements of surface and underground use are included in all these chapters. An index concludes Volume I and is cross-referenced to both report volumes.
