The Skorpion process comprises three processing steps, atmospheric leaching in sulphuric acid, zinc solvent extraction and electrowinning to produce special high grade zinc. The major mode of impurity transfer was attributed to crud runs in the solvent extraction circuit. Crud may be described as a heterogeneous, partly inorganic, partly organic mass of material which accumulates predominantly at the interface between organic and aqueous solutions. The paper describes the route causes of the crud formation in the solvent extraction circuit and optimisation strategies which are being followed to prevent impurity excursions in electrowinning. Dawsonite bearing oil shale of Colorado's Green River Formation offers a unique and vast (6.5 billion tons of Al2O3) resource of easily extractable alumina. The processing methods required by the thermal reactions dawsonite and its oil shale carrier also require production of shale oil, soda ash, and nahcolite as marketable coproducts. These production methods are presented. The alumina production process is contrasted with the Bayer process to describe technical advantages of extraction of alumina from oil shale which may offset the problems associated with processing a relatively lean ore. While alumina production from oil shale requires development of new technology, the technical problems appear solvable. Only the political problems arising from the now onerous and completely unnecessary Federal oil-shale withdrawal appear less solvable.

The Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits had as its wartime objective the most effective immediate utilization of these resources in the interest of National security. Since the war, the results of individual projects are being prepared for publication as rapidly as practicable. Numerous chromite deposits were examined, among them those of the French Hill Mine in northern California. Situated 16 miles east of Crescent City, 76 miles from the nearest railroad shipping point at Grants Pass, Oreg., this deposit had a recorded yield of about l4,000 tons of metallurgical-grade chromite to the end of 1943. By the end of 1946, total production was more than 25,000 tons, averaging 43 percent Cr2O3, with a chrome:iron ratio of about 2.5:1.

The semi-solid metal casting process results in a unique solidification path. The microstructural features that were identified during the characterization of the as-cast microstructure, were used as evidence of the process history in order to determine the solidification path followed during the evolution of the microstructure. The morphology of the grains was characterized using SEM and the extent and distribution of the elemental segregation within the grain structure was analysed using EDS. Many factors affect the overall performance of a gravity circuit beyond that of the primary gravity recovery device. It is critical to examine the gravity circuit in its entirety in order to determine the dominant operating variables that affect overall performance. Knelson has developed a mathematical model which has been used to assist in the design of gravity circuits, and in particular, in making accurate predictions of plant scale gravity recovery. More recently, inclusion of recovery by particle size class and additional data from various mine sites and research studies has made the model more robust. The model is now able to predict GRG (gravity-recoverable-gold) recoveries using various devices such as centrifugal concentrators, shaking tables, jigs and flash-flotation within the grinding circuit. The benefits derived by these recent advancements in modeling capability are two-fold; the first is as a tool to assist in circuit design and correct equipment selection and the second is as an analytical tool to help to evaluate and enhance the performance of existing gravity circuits.

he destruction of free cyanide on a Co3O4 doped carbon felt was studied. The experiments were done with an eiectrochemical filter press cell on dilute alkaline solutions containing 250 mg/l NaCN. No chloride ions were added to the solutions. The cobalt oxide protects the felt against corrosion and has a catalytic effect on the degradation of the cyanide. This kind of electrode allows working with current density as high as 1200 Aim without any visible degradation of the felt. The most interesting results were obtained with a current density of 400 Aim' at which the cyanide concentration can be lowered to 5 mg/l with a current efficiency of more than 70 % and a specific energy consumption of about 10 kWh/ kg CN.

While there could be as many directions on regulations as there are viewpoints surrounding the asbestos controversy, there are a few basic criteria that generally will influence government thinking, namely: - their definition of the problem to be regulated, - their interpretation of the scientific evidence available to them, and - their sensitivities to the views of, and the implications for, various interest groups in society. Clearly, different assessments of these criteria by various governments will lead to differing regulatory regimes. The consequence, of course, is a patchwork of non-conforming regulations among nations, with all that thin implies for the distortion of international trade and the unsettling of international relations. I would therefore argue that when governments are examining regulatory action, they should explicitly take into account their common interests in stable and cordial international relations, and when possible, efforts should be made to ensure that movement on regulation is at least, in principle, in accord with the general views of the international community.

The subject of haulage and heisting hazards is one that merits the attention of everyone engaged in mining. The purpose of this circular is to the importance of such hazards as are shown by Bureau of Mines accident figures, to give some examples of recent accidents and briefly analyze the immediate contributing causes, and to discuss some general means found by metal- and coal-mining companies to minimize those hazards. Haulage and hoisting accidents collectively constitute the second most common cause of accidents in and about coal mines and the third most common cause in and about metal mines. In both these types of mines falls of ground cause more accidents than haulage, and in metal mines falls of persons in raises and similar openings also exceed haulage accidents in number.

Gap electroluminescent diodes have been prepared by the vapor phase diffusion of zinc into n-Gap crystals which were grown from a gallium solution (10 wt pct Gap) doped with tellurium and Ga203. A marked improvement in the efficiency of the red electrolumines -cence has been achieved by heat treatment after diffusion. External quantum efficiencies of diodes annealed under optimum conditions are 0.2 to 0.6 pct at room temperature, or about 200 times higher than the efficiencies of diodes quenched after diffusion. The optimum dopant concentrations in the gallium melt from which the crystals were grown are 3to6 x at. pct Te and 4 to 8 x 10-2 mol pct Ga203. The efficient diodes are characterized by linearly graded junctions with an i-layer 0.1 to 0.2u thick. Annealing increases the emission intensity by a factor of 20 to 50 and decreases the current density to 1/3 to 1/8 that of quenched diodes at a given bias. The decrease in current is attributed to an annihilation of deep recombination centers in the depletion layer. The increase in emission intensity is interpreted in terms of an increase in lifetime of minority carriers and an increase in the relative intensity of red-to-infrared emission. The dependence of these quantities on the tellurium and oxygen doping levels is also discussed. A number of studies have been made of the red light emission from for ward-biased Gap diodes.' At room temperature this emission band is centered at 7OOO? with a spectral width of nearly 1000?. Low-tempera-ture photoluminescence indicates that this emission is due to either the radiative annihilation of an exciton bound to a pair of zinc and oxygen atoms substituting on nearest neighbor lattice sites2,3 or the radiative recombination of an electron bound to this Zn-O pair with a hole bound to an isolated zinc shallow acceptor.3 An emission band is also observed with a spectral peak at 9800?. This infrared emission has been shown to be due to the recombination of an electron trapped at an isolated oxygen deep donor with a hole trapped at an isolated zinc acceptor.4 The red emission from Gap diodes is fairly efficient at room temperature because the nearest neighbor Zn-0 pair forms a deep electron trap at 0.3 to 0.4 ev below the edge of the conduction band.2'4 In diodes grown by liquid epitaxy an external quantum efficiency of 2.1 x 10-2 (photon/electron) has been attained by heat treatment at relatively low temperatures.5 This heat treatment was found to increase the efficiency by a factor of 3 to 6. However, no detailed studies have-been reported on the effects of heat treatment. We can only cite Onton and Lorenz's work6 on the change ; in the relative intensity of red-to-infrared emission. Heat treatment has also been tried on junctions built in during growth, but contrary to expectations the efficiency decreased. In-diffusion is a simple and controllable method of fabricating p-n junctions. For Gap, zinc is generally used to form a p-type layer on n-type crystals. The emission efficiencies of in-diffused diodes are, however, extremely low in comparison with liquid epitaxial diodes.' Although efficiencies as high as 2 x 1O-3 have been reported, values from 10-6 to 10-4 are generally obtained by typical diffusion techniques. Out-diffused diodes are known to be a little more efficient than in-diffused diodes. Nevertheless, the quantum efficiency is at most 7 x 10- 3 and ordinarily of the order of 10-4.8 NO results have been reported on heat treatment of either in-diffused or out-diffused diodes. This paper reports a marked improvement in the efficiency of the red emission observed for in-dif-fused diodes as a result of heat treatment after diffusion. The method described reproducibly yields diodes with external quantum efficiencies of 2 to 6 x 10-3. The observed dependence of efficiency on annealing time and on doping level will be discussed in terms of the lifetime of minority carriers and the formation of Zn-O complex pairs. EXPERIMENTAL A) Diode Fabrication. The n-Gap crystals used in this study were grown from a saturated gallium solution by a slow cooling method.8 The Gap content in the gallium melt was fixed to 10 wt pct corresponding to a growth temperature of about 1100 Tellurium was chosen as the n-type dopant and added to the melt in concentrations ranging from 0.001 to 0.06 at. pct. Oxygen was added in the form of Ga2O3, whose concentration was varied from 0.004 to 0.2 mol pct. The resulting crystals were platelets with well-developed (111) surfaces. Typical electrical properties were Hall mobilities of 130 to 30 sq cm per v-sec and carrier concentrations of 1016 to 10" cm-3 at room temperature. Diodes prepared from crystals with relatively low doping levels, in which u = 130 to 100 sq cm per v-sec and n = 0.6 to 6 x 1017 Cm-3, were examined in detail. The p-n junctions were produced in these n-Gap crystals by the diffusion of zinc from the vapor phase by the following procedure. The platelets were carefully lapped on both sides to a thickness of 150 to 200 u while maintaining the (111) orientation. After being etched in hot aqua regia, the crystals together with the zinc were sealed in an evacuated 12 mm ID quartz ampoule 20 cm long. "A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MURRAY BROOK MINERAL DEPOSITDuring the mid-1950's intensive exploration activity in northern New Brunswick followed the discovery of the world class Brunswick base metal deposit. Using the prototypes of modern airborne geophysical and geochemical exploration techniques many mineralized areas in the Bathurst-Newcastle area were quickly identified. This base metal - silver camp is situated within the metavolcanic - metasidementary rocks of the Tetagouche Group which forms a roughly circular caldera-chaped voloanio complex of Ordivician age.One of the early results in the exploration history in the camp was the discovery of the Murray Brook Deposit by Kennco Explorations, (Canada) Limited. During routine ground checking of geophysical anomalies, most of which turned out to be graphitic schist, the discovery of some copper bearing float was made by the exploration team. This encouraged the company sufficiently to carry out a regional stream sampling program which lead to a large anomaly associated with a hematitic gossan. Diamond drilling of a weak Slingram anomaly over the gossan zone resulted in the discovery of massive sulphide lenses. This was followed in 1956-7 with an intensive drilling program. The result was the delineation of a potential ore body containing an estimated 23 million tons with an overall grade of 0.44% copper, 0.86% lead, 1.95% zinc, 25.73 g/tonne (0.91 oz/ton) silver, 0.28 g/tonne (0.01 oz/ton) gold. Within this package were higher grade zones of copper and lead-zinc mineralization approaching ore grades.A thick blanket of gossan was present and is reported to have caused the drillers considerable trouble as they attempted to penetrate it to get to the underlying sulphides. The gossan, consisting of iron oxides and silica fragments sits on top of the massive sulphides and attains a remarkable thickness of 45.5 meters (150'). Early work had suggested that the gossan was enriched in gold and silver. If this were the case and if the precious metal could be leached out with cyanide, then mining and recovering those values might be economic.With this in mind Northumberland Mines Limited optioned the property from Kennco in 1985. Preliminary leach tests indicated that indeed the gold in particular leached readily. Subsequent drilling of the gossan (using triple core barrel technology for better recovery of the easily ground core) indicated 1,536,363 tonnes (1,690,000 tons) with an average grade of 1.05 g/tonne (0.037 oz/ton) gold and 42.13 g/tonne"

Abstract -The Halfmile Lake stratiform volcanogenic massive-sulfide deposit consists of pyrrhotite­ rich breccia-matrix sulfides and pyrite-pyrrhotite-rich layered sulfides that form a laterally continuous sheet stratigraphically underlain by an extensive pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-quartz stringer zone. Mineralization is hosted by a sequence of felsic pyroclastics and volcanic-derived, fine-grained metasediments. The proportion of volcanic to sedimentary rocks indicates increasing vent proximity from southwest to northeast across the deposit area. Fine- to medium-grained felsic pyroclastics and roughly equal amounts of fine-grained metasediments comprise the stratigraphic footwall to the mineralization. Quartz-feldspar porphyritic bodies cut this sequence and may have provided the heat source for exhalite activity. Felsic tuffs, locally crystal-rich, and lesser amounts of metasedimentary rocks make up the immediate stratigraphie hanging wall. This sequence is stratigraphically overlain and locally interfmgered with matie volcanics that contain substantial proportions of felsic fragments. Deposition of sulfides post-dated the beginning of felsic volcanism, which places the deposit in the middle of the Lower Tetagouche Group. Compositions of the volcanic rocks range from basait to rhyolite and exhibit sub-alkaline affinities. Strongly overprinted whole-rock, trace-element, and REE geochemical signatures resulting from mineralizing hydrothermal activity confirm the genetic relationship be­tween the stringer zone and the mineralized sheet. Large-scale D1 folding has overturned the entire sequence. D1 thrust faults and related sheath-like folds have profoundly affected sulfide distribution. D2 is manifested by a penetrative S2 foliation, and D3 is represented by large-scale open folds.

Remote sensing methods have been used to evaluate vegetative growth patterns for many applications, though relatively little work has focused on tracking mine reclamation progress. For coal mines in Central Appalachia, reclamation approaches that include production of biofuel feedstocks are increasingly attractive, as these may yield significant post-mining land values and contribute to carbon-neutral energy supplies. To optimize biomass productivity, the influence of reclamation practices on biomass production must be well understood, which necessitates tracking biomass production over long time periods. Satellite-based estimations may offer low-cost alternatives to conventional biomass estimations and, also, the potential to provide critical input for carbon accounting at varied spatial scales. In this paper, experimental biomass production plots on reclaimed mine sites established in Wise County, VA, are used for a comparative study of satellite spectral derivatives, which are evaluated against groundbased biomass estimates. Metrics based on four spectral derivatives, band ratios and spectral transforms were regressed against biomass measured in situ for different species. The results demonstrate that greenness and principal component 2 (PC2) were more efficient than the other spectral derivatives for monitoring the biomass of this reclaimed area. Also, it is shown that Landsat-5 TM has provided promising results for monitoring of the biomass changes occurring from 2008 to 2010 over the study area.

Introduction Thick seams constitute a considerable portion of Polish coal reserves. In producing mines and those under construction, the reserves where the height is more than 4.5 m (15 ft) total about 24% of all the hard coal reserves. The reserves that are under urban and industrial areas can be extracted using stowing methods for surface protection. About 50% of thick seam reserves can be extracted by caving methods. Thick seam mining methods Thick seams are usually extracted by multilift methods. There are some methods of thick seam mining that generally can be divided into caving and stowing methods. The stowing method is more expensive, but must be used when mining to protect surface features. The more known methods of thick seam mining include • extraction of thick seam in ascending order with stowing ; • thick seam mining in descending order with consolidated stowing; • thick seam mining with gob consolidation; • thick seam mining in descending order with roof caving ; • sublevel caving thick seam mining system; and • thick seam mining system using an artificial roof. Thick seam mining with introduction of an artificial roof The most advantageous method of thick seam mining is the method using an artificial roof. The artificial roof usually consists of wire mesh. Such wire mesh must be durable and must prevent small rock fragments from passing through. The mesh is usually made of steel properly protected against corrosion. The artificial roof is placed on the coal floor of the top slice (Fig. 1). Caving rock falls on the artificial roof and is thus separated from the coal. The next slice is extracted under the artificial roof. The producing face of the next slice must progress within 10 m (33 ft) behind the front of the first slice. As the second producing face progresses, the wire mesh moves down on the coal floor and may be used as an artificial roof for the next slice. Thus, one artificial roof allows the extraction of several consecutive slices. Application of the artificial roof allows for clean extraction and reduces coal losses. It also eliminates the hazard of spontaneous combustion. Introduction of the artificial roof has been limited due to a lack of artificial roof laying equipment. Manual laying of wire mesh is a labor-intensive operation, and it delays face progress, resulting in poor productivity. To eliminate these problems, artificial roof laying equipment was designed at the Polish Central Mining Institute. The support and the method of laying operation is covered by a patent. Drill cores from Section 62, New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd., were used to study the petrology of rocks associated with the zinc lode. The distribution of the rock types in relation to the lode structure was determined. The distribution of the gahnite-bearing rocks was shown to be only partly conformable with the structure.It was concluded that large scale metasomatism was not widespread, that the rocks associated with the lode (except, perhaps, the quartz-gahnite-garnet rocks) were formed by metamorphism of sediments, and that rocks and lode were contemporaneously metamorphosed.INTRODUCTIONThis investigation was undertaken in order to study the rock types associated with the zinc lode of the Broken Hill orebody, and their relationship to the structure of the ore horizons. The work was confined almost entirely to the laboratory, and is therefore limited in its scope. It is hoped, however, that the information gained may throw some new light on the genesis of the lode.Certain inferences which are drawn from this work are at variance with the ideas of a number of earlier workers.In particular, the idea of large scale metasomatism developing many of the rocks associated with the lode, especially those containing manganese, is questioned. On the contrary, the rocks associated with the lode are more simply explained as highly metamorphosed sediments, in some cases modified by water introduced from surrounding rocks into zones of strong folding and faulting. The ore, as sent to the sulphide mill, is a mixture, in varying proportions, of oxidized ore from above the 450-ft. level and sulphide ore from above and below (to date mainly from above) that level. The oxidized ore consists essentially of quartz, with varying amounts of kaolin and clayey material which passes into the slime and, in excess, creates a serious problem in settling. Pyrite may be present in small amounts. The gold is free and extremely fine.The ore, classed as sulphide, consists of pyritic material in a quartz gangue. The sulphides have been exposed to weathering, leaching by descending solutions and attack by ascending gases and actual burning. The alteration products occur in widely varying proportions and this variation adds to the difficulties in settling and control of grinding and flotation.Copper Minerals.-Chalcopyrite is the principal copperbearing mineral with smaller and varying amounts of covellite, which is sometimes associated with chalcocite, both these minerals being apparently of secondary origin.Examination of tailing by Dr. Stillwell has revealed all stages between clean chalcopyrite, chalcopyrite tinged with covellite, covellite with residual cores of chalcopyrite and clean covellite.The chalcopyrite is free floating, very few particles of clean chalcopyrite being observed in the tailing from granular flotation. A modified liquation technique was developed for recovering tin from tinhouse scruff metal or hardhead containing about 10 per cent iron and 15 per cent occluded flux, palm oil, and moisture. This was effectedby heating the scruff metal to 950°C followed by rapid cooling to suppress the formation of FeSn2 and FeSn, and then subjecting it to the ordinary liquation and drossing processes of refining. By this method it was possible to recover about 83 per cent of the original tin content and, with subsequent smelting of the irony drosses, an overall recovery of 92 per cent was obtained.

"Crucible slag tests were employed to evaluate different refractory brick classes for the Cerro Matoso electric furnace. Comprehensive analysis was conducted to evaluate the crucible erosion and characterize any slag/refractory reaction products.The classes of refractories investigated were:•,tar-impregnated magnesia;•,rebonded fused grain magnesia-chrome;•,direct bonded magnesia-chrome;•,alumina-chrome;•,picrochromite; and•,magnesia-alumina (spinel).It was concluded that tar-impregnated MgO bricks were the most suitable for the slag chemistry and furnace environment according to corrosion and infiltration resistance. A picrochromite (MgCr2O4) brick performed exceptionally well with regards to erosion resistance, however, the slag infiltrated extensively through the brick pores. Alumina-chrome, direct bonded magnesia-chromite, and spinel (magnesia-alumina) bricks were evaluated as not suitable for use in the furnace."

GENERALThe lode, for purposes of description, may be said to be divided into two portions which are usually referred to as the Southern and Northern Orebodies.The southern ore-body is the larger and in places attains a width of 200 feet. The northern ore-body is, generally speaking, comparatively narrow. These ore-bodies have a northerly pitch of approximately 45' and a westerly dip of 60. In the southern ore-body a grid of ore chutes is provided at 31 ft. 8 in. (5 square set) intervals and this necessitates an elaborate arrangement of cross-cuts, portion of which have to be driven through the foot-wall. Crushed country rock adjacent to the foot-wall makes it necessary for drives to be placed at least 60 feet from the lode.In the northern ore-body the ore chutes are arranged along a longitudinal drive, thus making a much simpler layout. These layouts were described in detail by A. R. West (Proceedings A.I.M.M. No. 117). In opening up a new level from the shaft plat, a heading is extended in a westerly direction until a point approximately 60 feet from the footwall of the lode is reached.At this point the direction of the cross-cut is altered to a bearing approximately 90 to the general strike of the ore-body, and the cross-cut continued until the hanging-wall is intersected. From the information obtained together with that from diamond drilling, the outline of the ore-body is plotted as closely as possible, and this serves as a basis for the layout of the level. Drives south and north from the main cross-cut are made in order to determine the southern and northern extremity of the southern ore-body.
