When Haematite Explorations Pty. Ltd. began prospecting for petroleum in 1960, there was only ill-defined geological evidence on the land bordering Bass Strait to support the belief that petroleum lay trapped in sedimentary formations beneath its shallow waters.A reconnaissance of the area, made in 1961 by the airborne magnetometer method, covered the waters and islands of the Strait and overlapped the Victorian and Tasmanian coasts. The survey indicated the presence of the Bass Basin (which is completely water-covered), assisted in outlining the Otway and Gippsland Basins, and showed that each basin contains sedimentary rocks over 10,000 ft thick. Information on the regional geology and minor volcanic activity was also obtained.Marine seismic surveys carried out from 1962 to 1965 defined these basins more accurately and showed the nature and structure of the thick sedimentary sections.Correlation of the seismic data with onshore wells identified the sediments as Tertiary and Mesozoic. Subdivisions of the former in all basins and the latter in the Otway Basin were made. These Tertiary and Mesozoic rocks are not seriously deformed and they have good prospects of containing petroleum.Possible structural and stratigraphic traps, recognized from the seismic record sections by petroleum geologists, are being tested by offshore drilling which began in 1964.

The factors which influence the reduction of chromite are investigated with special reference to Coobina chromite. This was compared with a South African chromite ore. The reduction characteristics are outlined and the reduction kinetics studied Temperature has the most significant effect, followed by particle size, silica addition and type of coal.Electron microprobe analysis of the products indicates that iron in the chromite is first reduced at temperatures above 1100°C, followed by chromium at around 1200°C. At temperatures greater than 1200°C metallic iron and chromium are formed simultaneously and subsequently give an iron-chromium-carbon alloy. It was observed that the metallic carbide contains a small amount of silicon. The decomposition of the chromite spinel was observed to pass through the FeO.Cr2O3, MgO.Cr2O3 and MgO.AI2O3 forms before slag formation. It is concluded that Coobina chromite is suitable for the production of ferrochrome if direct prereduction followed by intensive bath smelting is used.

The range of environments which control the level of ground support required vary greatly in terms of rock type, rock structure and the mining method used. At the operating mines visited during this review the level of ground support was such that incidence of rock-fall- related accidents were rare. It was also found that methods existed to support most of the conditions encountered. The main problem areas were weak rock, major geological structures, areas of heavy jointing, high development density and areas affected by high mining-induced stresses and blasting. With stope support the level of success was much lower than that achieved in development; the larger spans and more rapid changes in geometry of open stopes compared with cut and fill stoping (where cables were originally used) led to significant problems. Before a useable design method for cable support of stope walls and pillars can be obtained the precise failure mode of the walls and pillars, and the interaction of the support and the rock mass must be investigated.

Mineralogical analysis of a nickeliferous laterite from the Rockhampton region shows that the nickel is largely associated with the manganese wad and opaline silica. The laterite also contains an appreciable chromite content (about 12 per cent Cr2O,) although this tends to be poorly liberated.Leaching with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, at atmospheric pressure at the boiling point is non-selective with respect to iron dissolution.The degree of dissolution increases as the acid concentration and retention time are increased; cobalt dissolution requires less aggressive conditions than does the dissolution of an equivalent amount of nickel.Leaching with sulphuric acid at elevated temperatures and pressures leads to a minimum amount of iron dissolution, is rapid, and requires a reduced acid addition rate. Nickel and cobalt recovery from the clarified leachate would be simplified because of the leach selectivity.Pressure leaching appears to be the most practical route for treating the Rockhampton laterite. The economics of processing would be made more attractive by the recovery of a chromium concentrate from the leach residue. This would typically contain about 45 per cent Cr2O, and could be used as a source of chromium chemicals.

A cellular precipitation reaction in which cells consisting of an Ni3Ti (DO24) phase and austenite are formed has been studied in an austenitic Fe-30 Ni-6 Ti alloy. The variation of the growth rate and interlamellar spacing of the Ni3Ti cells with temperature has been determined m the range 400" to 975°C; the interlamellar spacing is proportional to the degree of undercooling; the growth rate can be expressed by an equation of the form G = K?T)2 exp(-Q/RT). The habit of the Ni3Ti lamellae is (001)Ni3Ti (111)y;[010]Ni3T2 [010]y. An almost perfectly coherent interface is formed between Ni3Ti lamellae with this orientation rela -tionship and the intervening austenite. This first Ni3Ti cellular product is subsequently consumed by a second cellular reaction of much coarser spacing. CELLULAR precipitation reactions have been studied in copper-base,1,2 Au-Ni,3 pb-sn,4 and iron-base ferritic5,6 solid solutions, and this mode of precipitation has been treated theoretically by smith," Turnbull,8,9 cahn,10 and more recently by bohm.11 In the case of substitutional austenitic iron-base alloys little or no data are available, Cellular precipitation reactions are well known in austenitic nickel-base alloys12,13 but usually these reactions do not proceed to completion because of general precipitation occurring in the matrix, and they have not been studied in detail. Precipitation from an austenitic Fe-30 Ni-6 Ti alloy was studied as part of a larger investigation of the mechanisms of precipitation from substitutional iron-base alloys. This alloy, austenitic at high temperatures, decomposes at lower temperatures by a double cellular precipitation reaction. The first decomposition product consists of alternate lamellae of an Ni3Ti(DO24) phase and austenite. The reaction proceeds to completion, consuming all of the original austenite. This first cellular product is subsequently consumed by a second cellular reaction of much coarser spacing. The first cellular reaction was studied in detail by light and electron microscopy, hardness measurements, and by X-ray and electron diffraction. Interlamellar spacings and growth rates were measured during isothermal aging in the range 400" to 975°C. The orientation relationship between the Ni3Ti and austenite lamellae was determined and indicates that an almost perfectly coherent interface exists between the two phases. This first Ni3Ti cellular reaction is of particular interest because it occurs over such a wide temperature interval. This allows cellular growth rates and interlamellar spacing data to be obtained for much larger degrees of undercooling than reported hitherto. Mine seals are used extensively in underground coal mines to segregate mined-out areas and to isolate fire zones or underground areas that are susceptible to spontaneous combustion. Over the years, 30,000 mine seals have been erected in underground coal mines in the United States. Mine seals, along with rock dusting and ventilation, represent the fundamental means of preventing underground coal mine explosions. In this study the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) used ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology to determine if each of three test mine seals were uniformly constructed. Three mine seals representing different construction methods and materials (cast-in-place foamed cement; solid block, polyurethane foam and gravel; and wire mesh, rebar and gunite) were erected at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory’s underground mine as part of an on-going research program. The seals were imaged using GPR with 400-, 500-, 900-, and 1,000-MHz antennas. We found that variations in uniformity existed in the material for the cast-in-place foamed cement seal. Variations in uniformity also existed in the seal made from solid block, polyurethane foam and gravel. The post-processed radar records correlated closely with recovered core samples (areas of gravel and polyurethane foam, and areas containing only polyurethane foam). Finally, the radar records of the seal made of wire mesh, rebar and gunite showed the various components. The results of this work suggest that GPR could be used as a tool to evaluate mine seal characteristics and construction uniformity.

"CP-06 is an NATM cross passage which connects up-line and down-line metro tunnels near Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai. It lies completely in loose silty sand to dense sand with water table almost touching the ground surface after Chennai floods. Pre-grouting was done before excavation to seal the area and to ensure no-loose pockets. The heading was excavated successfully but while benching excavation huge water ingress started seeping out. Sand also permeated along with water which became unstoppable due to cavity formation and caused the up-line tunnel to sink considerably. A large grouting exercise was carried out with different grout materials and techniques both from the ground surface and inside of tunnel to stop the water ingress and stabilize the tunnel. This paper describes the chronology of events that occurred in the tunnel during CP-06 issue. It elaborates all the different grouting techniques involved in the whole process of the tunnel stabilization. It includes a finite element analysis using Rocscience RS2 9.0 software showing the possible cause of sand incursion with water from the CP invert which lead to the tunnel settlement. This paper also describes the after effects and the lesson learnt from the whole incident.INTRODUCTIONConstruction of Metro Rails has become the latest alternative to cope up with the transportation demand of the growing urban cities population. L&T SUCG JV constructed Chennai Rail Metro Phase II Contract UAA-04 which included design and construction of approximately 4 km of route length of underground mass transit railway including 3 underground stations. This package also includes 12 cross passages which are NATM tunnels connecting upline and down-line side of TBM tunnel for safe evacuation of passengers in case of emergency. As per NFPA guidelines, this is a mandatory structure and there should be atleast one cross passage in 244m tunnel length.CP-06 is a cross passage connecting upline and downline tunnel between Pachiyappa College Station and KMC Station, in Chennai Metro. During the construction of CP-06, heavy water seepage of around 450 liters per minute was encountered during second round of benching excavation after full heading was excavated. An inflow of around 12-15 cum of sand and silt was also observed inside the tunnel along with the seepage water, which created piping inside the TBM tunnel causing it to settle continuously with time. A huge effort was made to stop the water ingress along with loose sand which was causing the running tunnel to settle, involving all possible grouting methods and temporary support installation."

"Environmental considerations are a key driver within marine mining consenting processes across different national and international legislative regimes and are critical in shaping the global public perception of the industry. As a result, it is vital that mining companies seeking to operate within marine environments establish a robust understanding of the sensitivities of the seabed environments in which they are active, the impacts of their activities and the ability of the environment to recover from these impacts. The significant risks of failing to do so include an inability to either obtain or maintain operating permits. At the individual project level, the environmental effects of any given development project are typically defined within the scope of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). For well-established industries operating in well-studied environments this approach typically works well. However, where emerging industries or existing industries that are operating within new environments are concerned, there may be significant knowledge gaps pertaining to our understanding of how specific anthropogenic practices or activities interact with the marine environment. These knowledge gaps can cause significant uncertainties pertaining to the likely significant effects of a project. Such uncertainties may result in barriers to industry and economic progress, increased consenting risks, increased project costs to be borne by individual project developers through the acquisition of additional environmental data during the pre-consent or post-consent project phases, project delays and/or significant increases in environmental monitoring burdens with corresponding increases in project costs."

Experiments were made with a batch reactor to determine the effect of gas pressures, temperature, and gamma radiation intensity on the reaction CO + Ch ? COC12. The equation, [dp = 0.0110 (1 - 0.01t) (PCOI)1/2 PC12] where [dP] is the change of pressure of phosgene with time (atm/hr), t is the temperature (°C), PCO and PC12 are the reactant pressures (atm), and I is the radiation intensity (r/hr), was found to best fit the data. Oxygen and a large ratio of reactor surface to volume retarded the reaction, but inert gases had no effect. A low-temperature reactor system is proposed to take advantage of the conditions which give a high reaction rate with gamma radiation and a simple scheme of product purification.

Interest in the tantalum-niobium minerals has been greatly stimulated in Western Australia by the fact that these rare minerals occur at numerous localities in that State, and in the adjoining parts of the Northern Territory, sometimes in mineable concentrations, as at Wodgina and Greenbushes. A large proportion of the world's tantalum comes from these deposits. The late Dr. E. S. Simpson, in particular, made an extensive study of the chemistry and mineralogy of these minerals, and the following observations are based upon the examination of specimens which he and Mr. H. Bawley, Government Mineralogist of Western Australia, have submitted to me for examination from time to time. The fact that so many of the specimens have been analysed provides a unique opportunity for the interpretation of the phenomena observed in the polished sections.TANTALITE-COLUMBITE SERIESIt has long been considered, on the basis of crystallographic form, chemical analyses, and specific gravity measurements, that ferrotantalite (FeO. Taz05), manganotantalite (MnO. Taz05)' ferrocolumbite (FeO. Nbz0 5), and manganocolumbite (MnO. Nbz0 5 ) form a complete isomorphous solid solution series (Simpson, 1937) and this is confirmed by study of polished sections of these minerals, Pehrman (1929) examined a series of five analysed specimens with Nbz0 5 contents as follows:-

Operation improvement efforts at Hyuga Smelting Co., Ltd. have focused on calcining capacity in the reduction rotary kilns ("the kilns"), whose limited feed rate capacity had capped production at around 18,000t-NiN since 1995. To improve the kilns' feed rate capacity of 80 wet t/hr, attempts were made to increase the gas flow in the kilns by increasing the capacity of the off-gas fans. However, as the increased gas flow resulted in only limited improvement of the kilns' feed rate, a scoop feeder was installed on each kiln to add coal to the middle of each kiln's interior to gain a higher efficiency of thermal supply and conversion. With these gas flow and coal charge addition operations, the kilns' feed rate capacity increased up to 120 wet t/hr, with burner fuel efficiency increasing by approx. 10% (approx. 5% in total with the additional coal included). As a result, production was raised to a level of 22.000t-Ni/Y Keywords: reduction rotary kiln, scoop feeder, additional coal charge.

Victor G. Hills, Cripple Creek, Colo. (communication to the Secretary): In continuation of the subject of the perform ance of "baby machine-drills," presented by Mr. Thane, I sub mit the following records of work done with these drills in the Cripple Creek district of Colorado. Two years ago, the Anchoria-Leland mine began to use baby drills ; and, to make the experiment more complete, began by purchasing two machines, of the same size, but of different make. The little drills were first used for stoping and up raising, in which they achieved at once an unqualified success. Soon after, they began to be used for the smaller branch-drifts and prospecting cross-cuts, while the large two-man drills were still used for the main drifts. Now they have almost entirely superseded the large drills, since it has been found that they will do any ordinary work in the mine at less cost, both for labor and for powder, per ton of rock broken. The large drills, of course, make more rapid progress; but it is only where time is a specially important factor that they are now used. The Portland mine, where, until within a year, only the large machines were used, is now using some small drills for stoping, and also for drifting. Mr. Thane speaks of having two men to operate a baby-drill; but in this district the baby-machine is always worked by one man without help. Again, in Prof. Christy's postscript, the quoted extract from a letter of Mr. L. T. Seymour, the South African engineer, mentions a " 2 1/2-inch Little Giant," as though that were the smallest machine used in that region. These statements leave some doubt as to just what Mr. Thane means by a " baby-drill." To avoid any such uncertainty as to the present communication, I will say that the large or two-man drill in common use at Cripple Creek has a 3 1/8-inch cylinder; while a few mines employ a 3-inch, and a few, in running large tunnels, a 3 1/2-inch drill. DEPOSITS of iron are widely scattered in the folded Cretaceous rocks and the associated igneous intrusives of Puerto Rico. Most of them are too small for commercial development, but a few have aroused some scientific and economic interest, among them the large body of residua] limonite at the west end of the island near Mayaguez1-6 (Fig. 1) and the mixed hematite and magnetite deposit on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Cayey, about four miles north of Arroyo.7-9 Neither of these orebodies has been developed, nor have investigations of the widely distributed deposits of magnetite, which include all the remaining occurrences of iron deserving of economic consideration, proceeded beyond the exploratory stage. With the possible exception of the mixed deposit near Arroyo, the magnetite is directly associated with andesitic and dioritic intrusives, which invade the Cretaceous rock section, and the bulk of it, occurring in calcareous sediments, is clearly of contact-replacement origin. THE tensile and notch tensile ductile-to-brittle transition characteristics of several refractory metals and alloys have been well documented.1-3 Electron-beam melted tantalum and columbium have been shown to retain excellent ductility at very low temperatures. Some indications of brittle behavior (low ductility and cleavage fracture) were observed with columbium tested at -253oC, but no similar effects were noticed with tantalum. Increasing the interstitial oxygen content in these two materials resulted in the detection of indications of brittle behavior at higher temperatures, although good ductility was retained in both bases at -196°C when they contained about 1 at. pet 0. Detailed descriptions of the impact transition behavior of these two materials at various purity levels have not been available. This technical note describes the effect of interstitial oxygen on the impact properties of wrought, fibered tantalum and columbium and compares the transition behavior to the previously determined tensile transition characteristics. Tantalum and columbium impact specimens with three different interstitial oxygen levels indicated in Table I were tested at temperatures ranging from -196o to 300°C. Va.-How near the size of the sand can the coal to be treated be brought? Do you use an 8-mesh coal on that cleaner? J. J. RUTLEDGE, Baltimore, Md.-From the little I have seen of the apparatus in operation, I should say 8-mesh. In my experience in metalmine concentration work, trying to separate different minerals on one jig, sometimes I have succeeded and sometimes not. This apparatus has appealed to me; something of this kind should be useful with the silicates and carbonates of zinc. I think this apparatus has possibilities in metal mining. Recently in our coal field a screen has been introduced for cleaning coal; it is giving excellent service. When I asked the inventor why he did not take it to the metal mines, he said there was a good and sufficient reason, in a patent way. There may be reasons why it would not be applicable for metal mining; but the simplicity of it appeals to me and I cannot see why it could not be so used. T. FRASER (written discussion).-We feel that 8-mesh would be about -the minimum size of coal practicable to treat by the air-sand process. This would depend partly upon the friability of the coal. The more nearly the lower size limits of the coal- approaches the size of the sand, the more .time will be required in screening the sand out of the cleaned coal, which would mean a little more chance of breakage. In regard to the treatment of ores; this would necessitate the use of some heavier mediums than ordinary silica sand, or some other means of making the separation at a higher specific gravity than is required for coal. We are now working on a method of obtaining this effect for the preparation of anthracite coal without resorting to the use of heavier and more expensive material than common sand.

Keywords: Magnesium, pyrometallurgy, Mintek Samples of crude magnesium produced by the Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process were refined in two stages. The first stage consisted of co-melting of batches of the crude metal and MgCl2-KCl flux (cleaning), followed by stirring at 30 rpm for 30 minutes and settling of the sludge (mixture of molten salt and solid impurities) from the magnesium melt. The operating temperature was 680?730°C. Most of the contained calcium and significant proportions of iron and silicon were transferred into the sludge phase, which left a metal containing, on average, 950 ppm Si, 470 ppm Fe, and 230 ppm Ca. In the second stage, small-scale refining tests were conducted on cleaned samples from the first stage, as well as on crude magnesium. FeCl3 was used as the refining agent. These tests were carried out at 715?760°C with various amounts of the refining agent. The refined metal was suitable for the production of various magnesium alloys, particularly AZ91D.

Apatite ore plays a critical and irreplaceable role in fertilizer production and is being upgraded in quality in northern Vietnam. The old tailing of the Bac Nhac Son beneficiation plant (Vietnam) has a significant apatite amount in the form of coarse unliberated particles. These millions of tons of tailing ore have 6–8% of P2O5 content, which can be retreated to provide fertilizer factories. This work presents the results obtained in recovering apatite from this tailing in the laboratory. By the combination of the processes of classification, preliminary flotation, re-grinding and cleaning in the flotation column, an apatite concentrate of 30.68% P2O5 can be obtained with the total recovery of 37.76% from the initial tailing of 7.56% P2O5. The study results not only provide an appropriate technical solution for recovering the apatite ore from tailing ore but also have outstanding meaningness in the recovery of mineral resources under the context of a circular economy.

On the more important mines it is almost essential to have a general plan of the surface. A special feature of this plan should be the indication thereon of a suitable arrangement of contour lines, either wholly over the surface of the property or at parts where may seem most useful. The importance of having these contours marked on the plan will be best appreciated by the engineer, in selecting the best available site for a proposed new plant, in locating a tramway, in connecting the surface with the underground workings to the best advantage, or in solving many similar problems that come within his province. The closer the contours are together vertically the better, the limitation being the trouble and expense of getting them on to the plan. They may range from five to fifty feet apart but a distance of ten feet will be found, in most cases, to be the most useful.In deciding the datum level from which these contours are to be measured, it is best to depart from the ordinary sea level datum, and use instead the highest available point on the property. This datum will be called zero and all levels will be reckoned so many feet below it; thus by a contour marked 160 on the plan, it will be understood that the level of the plane of the contour is 160 feet below the highest available point on the property. This system of measuring levels downward is readily suggested from measuring the depths of shafts from the brace or of excavations from the original surface.
