Electrical-resistivity )measurments were made be-trueetz room temperatrive and 1.5 oK on five different stocks of cerium metal, and the results were correlated with the types, amounts, and distribution of the impurities present. Magnesium, which appeared to be distributed as a solute throughout the cerium matrix, was found to have a large effect on the residual resistivity, 1 at. pct Mg being sufficient to increase the residual resistivity by about 10 microhm-cm. The formation of ß by repeated thermal cycling between room temperature and liquid-helium temperature is attributed to the deformation and faulting that occurs during the ? D a transformation. In preparation for starting a proposed study of cerium-rich alloys, we examined samples from severa1 stocks of cerium metal in order to choose the purest stock for future use in making the alloys. Low-temperature electrical-resistivity data were used to gain initial information about the purities of the stocks. Additional information was subsequently obtained from chemical analyses, density measurements, optical metallography, and electron-micro-probe analyses. Cerium that has been annealed at high temperature and cooled to room temperature has the fee crystal structure (? phase) with a = 5.16Å. When cooled further, in the region between about 250" and 150°K, some of the fee phase transforms to the double hcp form (ß phase) with a = 3.68 and c = 11.92Å. The remainder of the room-temperature fee form (and perhaps some of the hexagonal phase) transforms electronically in the vicinity of 100° K to the more dense or "collapsed" fee form (a phase), a - 4.85A, by transferring about 0.5 electron per atom from the 4f level to the valence band. Very little work related specifically to the effects of impurities on the physical properties of cerium has been reported in the literature. Gaume-Mahn1, 2 has studied the effects of calcium, magnesium. iron, silicon, and tantalum on the electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility of cerium between 60o and 300°K. Gschneidner, Elliott, and McDonald3 have discussed the effects of total impurity content on the hysteresis of the a —? (reversible) transformation and on the formation of the 4 and "a-? intermediate" phases. Smith and Morrice* have reported the effect of total impurity content on the resistivity of cerium at 4 and 293°K. In none of these reports, however, is it apparent that the distributions of the impurities were determined, L.r., whether the impurities were present in inclusions or in solid solution in the matrix is not mentioned; nor does it appear that the phase purity of the cerium was always considered. In the present study, five different stocks of cerium were involved. One was represented by a single sample of electrowon cerium, which was all that had remained from a stock of high-purity material obtained from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Reno, Nev., in 1959. The other four stocks were recently purchased from commercial sources and were specified to be 99.9 wt pct pure. EXPERIMENTAL Cerium stocks designated as #1, #2, #4, and #5 were obtained from commercial suppliers for the specific purpose of finding a reliable source of high-purity cerium. Although the purity level of the cerium was specified to be 99.9 pet, the specifications did not include limits as to the amounts of various impurities that would be acceptable. Consequently the chemical analyses of the different stocks varied widely. Stock #3, which had been obtained from the U.S. Bureau of Mines and which was the purest on the basis of chemical analyses, consisted of a single specimen of electrowon cerium. The possibility of extracting nickel from a low-iron, highly siliceous nickel ore of Indian origin using roast reduction followed by an ammonia leaching process has been examined. The ore used in the investigation contained 0.82 wt% Ni, 6.20 wt% Fe3O4, 12.04 wt% MgO and 60 wt% SiO2. Phase changes in the constituent minerals on heating were studied by differential thermal analysis which revealed endothermic peaks at 110 and 695 degrees C and an exothermic peak at 810 degrees C. Significant process variables in studies of roast reduction include the amount of reductant, the temperature of reduction and chemical kinetics. Maximum nickel extraction was achieved by reducing the ore with 10 wt% fuel oil at 750 degrees C. The reduced ore was given a preconditioning treatment in concentrated ammonium hydroxide solution to oxidise most of the metallic iron and was then leached in aqueous ammoniacal solution at ambient temperature to dissolve nickel. This gives 88.5% extraction of nickel as soluble ammine complexes.

Surface-tension measurements for liquid Fe-C-Co and Fe-C-Ni alloys were performed by the sesszle-drop technique at 1350o and 1425°C. Cobalt was shown to he more effective than nickel in lowering the surface tension of Fe-C alloys A minimum value for surface tension of 1640 dynes per cm was found in the Fe-C-Co system at a concentration of 1.5 pet C and 12pet Co. Analysis of these measurements in terms of adsorption and desorption behavior indicated that cobalt and nickel lower surface tension in Fe-C alloys by replacing carbon at the liquid-vapor interface. Comparison of results to date for Fe-C liquid alloys has shown that most substitutional-type elements having about the same atomic diameter as iron also have relatively the same influence on surface tension when present in dilute amounts. It has been shown previously that surface-adsorption behavior in liquid Fe-C ternary alloys is related to the manner in which the ternary addition affects the activity of carbon in the bulk solution.' Certain ternary additions, such as chromium, tending to decrease carbon activity cause adsorption of carbon and chromium to the liquid-vapor interface. Additions, such as silicon, increase the carbon activity, resulting in a desorption of carbon and an adsorption of silicon. Both cases were shown to cause a decrease in surface tension due to adsorption. It is the object of this paper, as part of the writers' continuing interest in the effect of alloying additions on the surface tension of Fe-C alloys, to present and discuss surface-tension data on solutions in the ternary systems Fe-C-Co and Fe-C-Ni. Available activity measurements for these systems in the solid state indicate a strong increase in carbon activity when either nickel or cobalt is added to Fe-C alloys.2, 3 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloy compositions used are shown in Table I. These alloys were prepared by vacuum melting in stabilized zirconia crucibles and then vacuum casting into cold-steel molds. The nominal analyses for the alloys used in this investigation are given in Table I. Surface tensions and densities were measured by the sessile-drop method4,5 in conjunction with the tables of Bashforth and bdams.' Specimens were prepared by slicing 1/4-in. cubes from the center of the vacuum-cast ingots and grinding the edges of these cubes until their shapes approximated spheres with flat bottoms. Proper handling techniques, including an acetone rinse immediately before use, assured minimum contamination from sources extraneous to the actual melting. For each experimental run a sample was placed on a BeO plaque and positioned and leveled inside a vacuum induction heating apparatus. The sample and plaque arrangement sat inside a molybdenum tube which acted as the susceptor. Diagrams of this apparatus may be found in the literature.= After heating to temperatures just above the liquidus at pressures of the order of 10-4 to 10- 5 mm Hg, photographs of the drop profile were made using its natural thermal radiation as a light source. Some measurements were made with partial pressures (-1 cm Hg) of a mixture of H2 and He gases. The H2-He atmospheres proved to be necessary at higher nickel contents to retard excessive vaporization losses. Chemical analysis for carbon and the ternary addition was performed for each alloy sample after completion of the experimental run.

Residual collectors and their byproducts (e.g., CS2) in flotation effluents can cause water contamination and even result in serious health hazards to humans and animals, Therefore, residual flotation reagents should be removed properly before discharge or recirculation into flotation circuits. In this work, four thiol collectors (potassium ethyl xanthate (EX), sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate (SN- 9), O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z-200), dianilino dithiophoshoric acid (DDA)) were chosen as model pollutants. The collector removal, mineralisation and byproduct formation were compared by sole O3 and O3/UV185+254nm. The degradation rate constants of thiol collectors by O3/UV185+254nm were 2~6 times higher than those by sole O3. The mineralisation of collectors was also remarkably enhanced by O3/UV185+254nm. The degradation efficiency by O3/UV185+254nm had the order: EX>SN-9>>Z- 200>DDA. The Z-200 and DDA were refractory flotation reagents. The degradation of thiol collectors caused the reduction of solution pH and the increase of ORP and conductivity. However, the O3/UV185+254nm achieved more evident changes of these parameters than sole O3. During the degradation of thiol collectors, less than 4% of total sulfur in collectors was emitted into air as CS2 and H2S. Compared to sole O3, the O3/UV185+254nm had additionally included UV185+254nm photolysis and O3/UV254nm, resulting in higher efficiency in removing collectors. The O3/UV185+254nm was an effective process in treating mineral flotation wastewaters containing organic reagents. In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies, including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training.

"INTRODUCTION The Warrior View mine of the Seaboard Coal Corporation is located in Tuscaloosa County on the Warrior River about 14 miles northeast of Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Brookwood bed at this point yields a coal with fair coking qualities, and the product from neighboring mines on this bed has been used for the manufacture of blast furnace coke. The output of the Warrior View mine, however, is used exclusively for domestic and steam-raising purposes.This paper continues the series° of reports on the washability of Alabama coals which are based upon the study of coal preparation in Alabama now being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama with the cooperation of the different coal mining companies. This paper contains screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of a representative sample of run-of-mine coal, and flakiness and crushing tests on certain sizes.Published information on the Brookwood bed is very meager. Fieldner6 gives the proximate and ultimate analyses for a number of seam samples taken from representative mines working this bed. Gandrud and Britton7 show sections of this bed taken at Searles, Ala. They also give the specific gravities of the coal, the bone, and the shale partings.Table 1 give the proximate and ultimate analyses for the 3/4 to 3/16 inch size of raw coal. Table 2 gives the sulphur content and the ash fusibility temperatures of the float-and-sink fractions for this same size. The character of the coal is very uniform throughout the range of sizes produced and, as it was not convenient to have these analyses on all sizes, this size was chosen as being representative of the coal. From the information available it is evident that the coal preparation problem is restricted to one of ash reduction.SAMPLING AT THE MINEAt the Warrior View mine the run-of-mine coal is dumped from the mine cars upon a 3-inch grizzly. The oversize is crushed in rolls set at 24 inches and joins the undersize before being elevated to the raw-coal bin ahead of the jig. The sample was caught at the point where elevates discharges into the raw-coal bin, by taking a proportional amount of the coal at 10-minute intervals over the period of a day's run, The total sample amounting to 2.7 tons was shipped to the laboratory at Tuscaloosa for the washability studies."

The molten salts M2S2O7and MHSO4, the binary molten salt systems M2S2O7-MHSO4and the molten salt-gas systems M2S2O7-V2O5and M2S2O7-M2SO4-V2O5(M = Na, K, Rb, Cs) in O2, SO2and Ar atmospheres have been investigated by thermal methods like calorimetry, Differential Enthalpic Analysis (DEA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Fundamental thermodynamic data like temperatures and molar heats of solid-solid transition and fusion, phase diagrams, heat capacities of solids and liquids, heat of mixing, and heats of complex formation have been obtained and are reviewed here. Also EPR spectroscopic evidence of V(IV) complexes and their structure are reported and the results are discussed in relation to the mechanism of SO2oxidation by V2O5based industrial catalysts. The optimal maintenance and control of the air flow and pressure distribution in a mine network are achieved by the correct positioning of the mine fans and regulators within the mine ventilation circuit. The principal considerations are the location of the main and underground fans or regulators and the attendant control of mine leakage. Air flow control is achieved by either passive or active regulation. Passive regulation adds resistance, usually in the form of a regulating door. Active regulation adds pressure sources in the form of underground booster fans. Ventilation engineers are increasingly turning to analytical tools to assist them in the design and operation of ventilation systems. O objetivo geral foi produzir e caracterizar a microestrutura de um compósito abrasivo nanoestruturado no sistema D-Si, via sinterização cíclica de alta pressão e alta temperatura (HPHT). A sinterização cíclica em alta pressão e alta temperatura de compósitos foi feita a partir de uma mistura de 70% diamante e 30% de Si como ligante, o qual foi moído por moagem de alta energia sendo então partícula nanométricaso. A sinterização foi realizada por 1 a 4 ciclos de pressão (P) de 7GPa- 4GPa e temperatura (T) 1600°C-300°C, para um tempo (t) de 1min. As análises de difrações de raios X mostraram a ocorrência, além do diamante, de SiC, FeSi e grafite. As análises de MEV e EDS mostraram uma distribuição uniforme dos cristais de diamante na matriz de SiC. A análise da região de fratura das amostras mostrou que todos os cristais de diamante foram abrangidos pelo ligante, ou seja, a liga formada a partir da interação de carbono e de silício. Finalmente, conclui-se que esta pesquisa aprimorou a técnica de produção de MCDs para uso futuro em bits de brocas de perfuração de poços de petróleo.

Evidence is produced below to show that the carbide "Mn,C," reported by Kw,and ersson' is really a mixture of two carbides. One is an Fe-Mn carbide which is probably isomorphous with hexagonal Mn15C4, reported by Bouchand and Pruchart.' The othev is a tetragonul Fe-Mn carbide with cell dzmensions close to those reported previously by the author3 for an Fe0.1Mno. carbide. IN a recent investigation several Fe-Mn carbide specimens, each weighing about 5 g, were prepared in a manner previously reported.3 Debye-Scherrer X-ray photographs were taken of at least two samples from different parts of each specimen using a 114.6-mm-diam camera. The exposure time was 2 hr using filtered chromium radiation, a tube voltage of 35 kv and a tube current of 10 ma. In the case of one specimen, which contained nominal weight percentages of iron, manganese, and carbon of 9.40, 84. 6,, and 6.0, respectively, duplicate chemical analyses indicated f1.2 and 5.5 wt pct C to be present in the two samples taken of the specimen: no graphitic carbon was detected. One powder-diffraction pattern of this specimen indicated the presence of the tetragons: carbide reported earlier,3 (a = 6.772A, c = 9.427A), plus cementite (O), plus an unknown structure. The melting points of mixtures of titanium dioxide and other titanates have been reported to a limited extent as binary systems and some results have been reported in conjunction with silicon dioxide. The limited data indicated that a low melting zone might exist in a ternary or quarternary system of CaO-MgO-TiO2-Al2O3, since the eutectics reported in the binary systems of MgO.TiO2-TiO2, Al2O3TiO2-TiO2 and CaO.TiO2-TiO2 were of about equivalent composition of TiO2. The importance of a low melting region with a high titanium oxide value in the developing of high titanium slags is fully appreciated by metallurgists. A comprehensive study was undertaken to establish basic information on low melting titanate mixtures. Compounds in the System CaO-MgO-TiO2 -Al2O3 Preparation of the titanates of CaO, MgO and Al2O3 confirmed reported data that the following compounds could be formed under oxidizing conditions in solid state reactions: CaO.TiO2, 2MgO.TiO2, MgO.TiO2, MgO-2TiO2 and Al2O3.TiO2. Under oxidizing conditions it was not possible to react MgO with TiO2 in mol ratios higher than 1:2 without having unreacted TiO2 in the product, nor was it possible to form calcium or aluminum titanates with a higher mol ratio of CaO and A12O3 to TiO2 than 1:1. By fusing mixtures of Al2O3-TiO2 and MgO-2TiO2 together a series of solid solution products were obtained, which showed an MgO-2TiO2 X ray diffraction pattern shifted to smaller inter-planar spacings. Range of Investigation Data in the literature1 indicated that these titanates had melting points which ranged from 1645 to 1860°C. Since the purpose of the study was primarily to provide useful data for smelting titaniferous ores, the work was restricted to the zone of the system which would include the crystalline phases present in the slags. The explored limits were bounded by CaO.-TiO2-MgO.TiO2-TiO2in the base plane. The system was extended to a fourth component Al2O3-TiO2 since many titaniferous ores contain appreciable amounts of A12O3. In the quarternary system CaO-TiO2-MgOTiO2-TiO2-Al2O3TiO2, a tetrahedron was used to represent graphically the components, with one component at each point of the tetrahedron. In the base plane, mixtures were pre- pared to represent fairly uniform changes of composition over the desired range expressed on a mol percent basis. Al2O3-TiO2 was brought into the system in increments of 10 mol pct up to 40 pct. Mixtures were then made up for each of the Al2O3-TiO2 planes. The ranges employed were then represented by five planes cutting the tetrahedron at 10 mol pct Al2O3-TiO2 intervals. Choice of Equipment Although it was necessary for all smelting work to be done in a strongly reducing atmosphere, it was decided that all melting point determinations should be done under oxidizing conditions. This decision was prompted by the fact that TiO2 reduced to lower oxides in a reducing atmosphere with consequent changes in melting points. The use of a micropyrometer and a platinum strip furnace for work of this type is adequately described in the literature.2 With modifications, equipment was selected which provided a fairly rapid method of determining melting points of refractory oxides. The final assembly, which was used, consisted of a platinum strip furnace and a Leeds and Northrup disappearing filament optical pyrometer attached to a special telescope which magnified the sample about 20 diam. The furnace assembly consisted of a platinum strip 0.005 X 0.3 X 2.2 in. mounted on brass posts on a refractory base. This was enclosed in a black steel shell which had a 2-in. opening at the top for purposes of sighting the telescope. The platinum strip was in series with two 0.04 ohm nichrome resistors connected to the secondary of a 2 kw transformer which supplied 17 volts. The current to the primary was varied

A new process for extracting cadmium from the electric precipitated dust produced by ISP process was studied. A leaching rate of 89.1% of cadmium was attained by leaching the dust with NH3?H2O-(NH4)2SO4 system under the best leaching conditions: ratio of liquid to solid(l:s)=2.5, c(NH3):c(NH4+)=3:5, total concentration of ammonium and ammonia=8 mol?L-1, leaching time= 1.5h, temperature=35. The most troublesome impurity of lead could be deposited from the leached out solution automatically after put it static more than 15h when the total concentration of zinc and cadmium was up to 45gL-1 , and the final concentration of lead was 0.0047 gL-1, which meant 99% of it was removed. Metallic cadmium which contained cadmium more than 99% was prepared by electrowinning under the conditions: current density=750Am-2, total concentration of Cd2+ and Zn2+>25gL-1. The current efficiency was about 87% and the energy consumption for every ton of cadmium was about 548KWht-1. Main impurities of the metallic cadmium were copper and zinc and all of they could be got rid of in the following pyrometallurgical refining step.

This article presents an overview of the experimental phase equilibria studies of S-containing systems (Ni-Sn-S, Cu-Sb-S, and Cu-Sn-S) and As-containing systems (Fe-Sb-As and Fe-Sn-As). These systems improve the prediction capabilities of FactSage in a 20-component ‘Cu2O’-PbO-ZnOFeO- Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2-S-(Al2O3-MgO-CrO-Cr2O3-Na2O)-(As, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ag, Au, Ni, Co) system for complex pyrometallurgical operations during both refining and recycling. Experiments involved equilibration at predetermined temperatures (300–1200°C) with or without preheating, followed by rapid quenching in a brine. Quenched samples were then directly measured using an electron probe microanalyser. For the Ni-Sn-S system, liquid phases (NiS- and SnS-rich mattes and liquid metal) and solid phases (Ni1+xSn, SnS, Ni3Sn, FCC-Ni, Ni1-xS, NiS2, Ni3Sn4, SnS2, Sn2S3 and β-Ni3S2) were observed. A new Ni3Sn2S2 phase was found to melt incongruently. For the Cu-Sb-S system, liquid metal, matte, FCC-Cu, digenite, Sb, CuSbS2, Cu3SbS3 and Cu3SbS4 phases were observed. For the Cu-Sn-S system, liquid metal, matte, digenite, SnS and Cu3Sn phases were found at liquidus.

"The influence of crystallographic orientation on the pitting corrosion behavior of Ni-Fe-Cr alloy 028 was studied by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), potentiodynamic polarization technique and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results show that there is anisotropy of pitting corrosion that strongly depends on crystallographic orientation of surface planes. The distribution of pits frequency in standard stereographic triangle shows that the crystallographic planes close to {100} are more prone to pitting corrosion compared to planes of {110} and {111}. The calculation of surface energy (001) and (111) shows that the planes of high packing density of atoms have low surface energy with concomitant strong resistance to pitting corrosion. A correlation function between crystallographic orientation and pitting corrosion susceptibility suggests a method not only to predict the pitting resistance of a known textured materials, but also to improve corrosion resistance by controlling materials texture.INTRODUCTIONNickel-iron-chromium(Ni-Fe-Cr) alloys are widely used in various industries and engineering sectors due to their combination of good mechanical properties and high corrosion resistance(Hibner, 2001; Thomas, 2006; Ghosh, 2005).Ni-Fe-Cr alloy 028 (alloy 028)has such important characteristics worth mentioning. Alloy 028 contains high amounts of nickel, copper and molybdenum which improve its resistant to corrosion attack in reducing medium, and presence of high level of chromium makes it more resistant to oxidizing species. Moreover, alloy 028 is less expensive because of higher amount of iron compared to other similar alloys. Currently, alloy 028 is manufactured as evaporator tubes applied in the phosphoric acid production; production tubing and casing used in deep and sour gas wells; heat exchangers employed in nuclear power plants, and seawater-carrying piping and seawater-cooled heat exchangers (Bankiewicz, 2012; Kivisäkk, 2003; Gómez, 2003; Xian, 2012; Bellezze, 2004)"

Measurements of current efficiency on iron-silicate slags in iron crucibles showed that conduction is about 10 pct ionic in slags with less than 10 pct silica and about 90 pct ionic in slags with more than 34 pct silica, increasing linearly in the intermediate range. The balance of the conduction is electronic in character. Silicate ions are discharged at the anode with the evolution of gaseous oxygen. Transport experiments show that the ionic current is carried almost entirely by ferrous ions, which may be assigned a transport number of one. THERE has been increased evidence in recent years that the constitution of liquid-oxide systems (slags) is ionic.1-3 The principal studies designed to establish the structure of liquid slags have been by electrochemical methods', " and conductivity measurements1,6,7 which also have indicated the presence of semiconduction in several silicate systems1,4-0 and in pure iron oxide.' It is well known that many slag-forming metallic oxides have an ionic lattice type in the solid state, and their properties are determined to a large extent by the lattice defects and ion sizes. As Richardson8 as pointed out, the detailed models of liquid slags cannot be found on thermodynamic data only but "must rest on a proper foundation of compatible structural and thermodynamic knowledge, combined by statistical mechanics." A careful thermodynamic study of the iron-silicate slags has been carried out by Schuhmann with Ensio9 and with Michal.10 They obtained experimental data relating equilibrium CO2: CO ratios to slag composition and made thermodynamic calculations of the activities of FeO and SiO, and of the partial molal heats of solution of FeO and SiO2 in the slags. It was found that the activity-composition relationships deviate considerably from those to be expected from an ideal binary solution of FeO and SiO2. However, the partial molal heat of solution of FeO into the slags was estimated to be zero. Their experimental results were correlated with the constitution diagram for FeO-SiO2 of Bowen and Schairer,11 with the results of Darken and Gurry" on the Fe-O system, and with the work of Darken"' on the Fe-Si-O system. All these studies were found to be consistent with one another. The variation of the mechanism of conduction with composition in the liquid iron-oxide-silica system in the range from pure iron oxide to silica saturation (42 pct SiO2) in iron crucibles was reported in a preliminary note." The current efficiency, or conformance to Faraday's law, showed some ionic conductance at all compositions, the proportion increasing with the concentration of silica. The current-efficiency experiments since have been extended. Furthermore, transport-number measurements have been completed in silica-saturated iron silicates to determine the nature of the conducting ions. Experimental Current Efficiency in Liquid Iron Oxide and Iron Silicates using Iron Anodes: This study was carried out by passing direct current through slags in the range from pure iron oxide to iron oxide saturated with silica (42 pct silica), using pure iron rods as anodes and the iron container as the cathode. A copper coulometer was included in the circuit to indicate the quantity of current passed during electrolysis. Assuming that the cation involved is Fe-+, the theoretical quantity of iron lost from the anode according to Faraday's law may be calculated and when compared with the actual loss observed, gives an indication of the extent to which Faraday's law has been obeyed. It also gives an indication of the presence and extent of ionic conduction in the melt. Preparation of the Slags: About 100 g of chemically pure Fe,O, powder is placed in an iron pot which is heated by induction until the contents liquefy. In this way, FeO is produced according to the reaction Fe2O3 + Fe = 3 FeO. More Fe2O3 or SiO, powder is added and, when a sufficient quantity of molten slag is obtained, the induction unit is turned off, the pot withdrawn, and the molten slag poured on to an iron plate. Homogenization and Electrolysis of the Slag: Apparatus—After considerable development, the setup illustrated in Fig. 1 proved to be quite satisfactory. A is an Armco iron cylinder, 1 in. ID and 1/8 in. wall, consisting of three sections placed one on top of the other. The bottom section is a pot about 5 in. long with a small hole drilled in its bottom to allow withdrawal of gases during evacuation of the apparatus. The middle section is 6 in. long and consists of a pot which serves as the slag container, while the top section is a hollow-cylinder continuation of the slag-container pot. The height of this latter section is about 5 in., giving an overall length of approximately 16 in. Os aços inoxidáveis austeníticos são materiais utilizadas nos ramos petroquímico, nuclear e aeroespacial cujas demandas se resumem essencialmente à: boa resistência mecânica, excelente soldabilidade e elevada resistência à corrosão. Apesar destes metais atenderem a estes requisitos, não raro são submetidos a etapas de conformação para elaboração de peças, o que pode modificar as suas propriedades originais. Basicamente, a causa desta mudança são alterações metalúrgicas induzidas por deformação, como a transformação da austenita (paramagnética) em martensita-a’ (ferromagnética). Tendo em vista que tais mudanças são acompanhadas de variações nas propriedades elétricas/ magnéticas destes aços, uma maneira de monitorá-los de maneira não destrutiva é através da técnica de correntes parasitas. Para este estudo, diversas amostras de aço inoxidável AISI 321 foram solubilizadas e deformadas por laminação a fim de produzirem diferentes frações volumétricas de martensita. Em seguida, submetidas à microscopia ótica, magnetômetro de amostra vibrante e correntes parasitas. De acordo com os resultados, percebe-se que toda a transformação martensítica se passa no intervalo entre 0,10 e 0,55 de deformação verdadeira. Além disso, com os dados de magnetização de saturação, foi possível estabelecer uma curva de calibração de comportamento exponencial, permitindo a quantificação da martensita de maneira não destrutiva.

"Sensor-based ore sorting is on its way to establish as a standard option for physical separation. The increasing number of installations in coal, iron ore, industrial minerals and hard-rock metal mining segments underlines the technological and financial potential that is beginning to be untapped. The Ma’aden Phosphate installation with 1.650 t/h sensor-based ore sorter feed sets a new benchmark for the possible capacity of stationary installations. Besides stationary installations, including multiple sorters parallel in different size ranges and multiple stages, containerised semi-mobile plants are applied. These offer two advantages, first being the reduction of transport costs when applied close to the mining face. The second is that semi-mobile systems enable processing of tens of thousands of tonnes of ore in a piloting phase with an approximate duration of 0.5 to six months, verifying the results laboratory mini-bulk tests on 5–10 tonnes of sample. This is especially important for low-grade metal ores because of the inherent Fundamental Sampling Error, as well as the Grouping and Segregation Error. The paper elaborates the results achieved within the I2MINE project, treating polymetallic ore at the Boliden Concentrator in Sweden.INTRODUCTIONSensor-based ore sorting (SBS) is becoming a standard option for physical separation, applied in all segments of mineral production. The Umm Wu’al project sets the bar for stationary SBS installations with 1,650 t/h feed (TOMRA, 2015). Especially for low-grade hard rock metal ores, an interdisciplinary approach is necessary applying experts for all aspects of mineral production. Due to the impact on the whole process stream, it is important on the end user side to have high level managerial support and involve all disciplines to ensure that all stake holders are involved in the analysis."

This report describes a study to develop a detailed set of guidelines and equipment recommendations to be used as a guide for mine operators, mine inspectors, and equipment manufacturers in implementing the emergency escapeway standards for metal and nonmetal underground mines. It was sponsored by the United States Bureau of Mines. The first part of this report reviews the historical background of metal and nonmetal mine fires and the development of present and proposed mandatory standards. This is followed by a discussion of the survey of representative mines and how the proposed standard effects these mines. The remainder of the report covers technical discussions of each escapeway component including a comprehensive computer simulation of mine evacuation. Following the technical discussion of each group of escapeway components is a list of the pertinent guidelines. "A thermodynamic study of the equilibrium phase assemblage AgBi3S5-Bi2S3-S was made by an EMF-technique, using the RbAg4l5 solid electrolyte. The ternary phase was synthesized from the pure Ag2S and Bi2S3 in an evacuated silica ampoule and grinded into powder and mixed with appropriate compositions of B12S3 and S, in a series of experiments, for pressing in to pellets. The pellets were assembled to form the galvanic cells Pt (-) | Ag ] RbAg4ls | AgBi3S5+ Bi2S3 + S + (C) I Pt (+). The EMF-measurements were made in the temperature range 299 - 460 K.In this paper, thermodynamic functions of the ternary phase AgBi3S5 (pavonite) have been determined. The agreement between the obtained results and the literature values were established.IntroductionThe complex group of ore minerals constitutes from trace amounts to a major proportions of sulfosalts. Although the sulfosalts rarely form massive ore bodies, they are commonly associated with rich sulfide ore minerals for the base and precious metals and widely distributed in a metal poor sulfide minerals [1]. For instance, Ag-bearing sulfosalts are encountered in ore minerals for the production of the base metals and are common sources of silver. Nevertheless, thermodynamic properties of the sulfosalts are poorly known.Reliable thermochemical data are essential for quantitative modeling of the chemical behavior of the sulfosalts in equilibrium with sulfides, which in turn would promote the optimization of complex minerals treatment and extractive metallurgy of the valuable metals."
