Os aços avançados de alta resistência do tipo dual phase (DP) são aplicados na indústria automobilística, principalmente, em componentes estruturais. Alguns desses aços são revestidos com zinco e suas ligas, visando maior resistência à corrosão. Atualmente, o processo de união de aços mais utilizado em veículos é a soldagem por pontos. O emprego inadequado de parâmetros de soldagem pode provocar trincas por fragilização por metal líquido (LME, do inglês liquid metal embrittlement) em regiões de soldas a pontos de aços de alta resistência revestidos com zinco. O metal líquido, neste caso, consiste em ligas de Zn-Cu provenientes da combinação de cobre dos eletrodos de soldagem com o zinco do revestimento, que penetra em contornos de grãos, reduzindo a sua energia coesiva. Sob solicitação mecânica, tal fragilização pode ocasionar origem às trincas. Neste trabalho foram investigadas as condições de formação de trincas por LME na soldagem de aços DP da classe de 600 MPa de limite de resistência galvanizado por imersão a quente (HDG - GI). Verificou-se, em todas as condições de soldagem avaliadas, a penetração do metal líquido na superfície da solda. A ocorrência de trincas, no entanto, só foi constatada em condições de soldagem que implicaram na geração de tensões. Tais tensões foram intensificadas com refrigeração inadequada, causada por diferentes vazões de água nos eletrodos inferior (1,5 l/min) e superior (7,5 l/min), e/ou soldagem sequencial. Não foram observados efeitos prejudiciais de trincas por LME nas resistências estática (cisalhamento por tração) e dinâmica (fadiga sob cisalhamento).

"An autogenous grinding circuit was commissioned at the Brunswick concentrator in October 1998. The autogenous grinding circuit replaced existing surface crushing plants, fine ore storage, rod and primary ball mills. The 8.54m diameter x 4.27m long (EGL) AN1 mill is driven by a bidirectional variable speed 6.3MW ABB wound rotor motor with Slip Energy Recovery (SER) drive. The AG mill was subsequently converted to SAG operation in May 1999 for a number of reasons. The mill is operated in closed circuit with horizontally inclined 660mm diameter cyclones to produce a circuit product P80 of 85 microns. Extensive test work and JKSimMet design modeling resulted in a production circuit operating closely within design expectations.The circuit is highly instrumented and controlled via a hybrid Programmable Logic Controller (PLC-5) and Fisher PROVOX Distributed Control System (DCS) that is in communication with the property information highway. An expert control system (Gensym G2) is used for control of the SAG mill load.Engineering and construction were completed in 28 months from the time of management approval for the project. The Brunswick AG/SAG mill circuit was commissioned on schedule at the $M 23.5 forecast budget."

Magnesium borates of varying compositions and properties are synthesized using different reagents and methods for the possible potential uses as termoluminescent material, anti-wear and anti-friction additive, fire retardant, catalyst for the conversion of hydrocarbons, whisker material and ferroelastic material. In the current work, the conditions for synthesizing MgB4O7 compound by high-temperature solid-state reactions were investigated using boric acid and magnesium oxide as the starting materials. The MgO:B2O3 mole ratios applied in the experiments were 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and the thermal behaviours of each mixture were studied between 25~1200°C by TG/DTA analyses under static air atmosphere to find out the probable formation temperature of MgB4O7 phase. Considering TG/DTA results, freshly prepared boric acid and magnesium oxide solid mixtures were heated at predeter-mined temperatures and the phases were identified by XRD analyses. Accordingly, MgO:B2O3 mole ratio of 1:2, heating temperature of 950°C and a reaction time of 2 hours were selected as the optimum conditions for the formation of maximum amounts of MgB4O7. After obtaining solids prepared at the pre-determined optimum conditions, their chemical composition, IR spectrum, TG/DTA pattern, B.E.T. surface area value, particle size distribution and SEM images were deter-mined to point out the possible use areas. Experimental results showed that it was not possible to obtain pure product at the optimum conditions due to formation of minor amounts of t-Mg2B2O5 and the presence of some unreacted B2O3. The product synthesized has the potential for use as a corrosion inhibitor on some metal surfaces.

Pastilhas de Urânio (UO2) são empregadas como combustível nos reatores de potência, onde as condições operacionais introduzem elevados gradientes térmicos nas pastilhas. Potências elevadas propiciam a fusão da parte central das pastilhas. O inchamento das pastilhas UO2, decorrente dos produtos de fissão, causa trincamento do material e o estudo do seu comportamento é importante. Esse trabalho avaliou a aplicação de método ultrassônico na obtenção de constantes elásticas. Em função das dificuldades no manuseio do material nuclear, optou-se por um estudo comparativo em pastilhas de alumina (Al2O3). Foram fabricados e usados dois conjuntos de 10 pastilhas de Al2O3 com densidades de 92% e 96%. Foi utilizada técnica ultrassônica por transmissão obtendo medidas do tempo de percurso de ondas ultrassônicas, longitudinais e transversais, usadas para a determinação das constates elásticas do material. Equações relacionando densidade do material e velocidade da onda ultrassônica ao módulo de elasticidade, módulo de cisalhamento e coeficiente de Poisson, permitiram obter essas constantes elásticas, que apresentaram excelente concordância com a literatura disponível para o Al2O3.

Blasting is an integral part of mining activity and is an inherently destructive process. The quality of the rock mass in which an excavation is being driven has a strong influence on the level of dynamic forces to which the rock can be subjected and sustain damage. Though each specific rock mass occurrence is unique, yet there are common rock mass features which influence the outcome of controlled blasting in a similar way. A field study was conducted which involved assessment of blast damage at several operating mines and blasting of small scale models. The effects of block size and strength, joint parameters, ground water, weathering of rocks and rock mass rating on the results of controlled blasting have been investigated and discussed in this study. The influence of number and thickness of weak layers on overbreak control has been discussed in the light of practical data. Critical particle velocity ranges for damage to rock masses with different qualities have been outlined. An approach for the judicious design of perimeter hole pattern and charge concentration has been proposed.

As ligas livres de chumbo (Lead-free solder alloys) potencialmente utilizáveis em processos de soldagem branda, tais como as ligas à base de Sn, vêm sendo estudadas como alternativas para substituir as ligas do sistema Sn-Pb. Em vista disto, o presente trabalho, aborda tanto a análise das características microestruturais formadas durante a solidificação transitória das ligas eutética Sn-0,2%Ni e hipereutética Sn-0,5%Ni, quanto a determinação das suas respectivas correlações com os parâmetros térmicos de solidificação: velocidade da isoterma eutética (VE) e taxa de resfriamento (?E). Para tanto, as ligas foram solidificadas unidirecionalmente no sentido vertical ascendente e em regime transiente, e caracterizadas por técnicas de microscopias ótica e eletrônica de varredura. Na liga hipereutética Sn-0,5%Ni, o aumento da quantidade de Ni na liga influenciou tanto o comportamento térmico quanto o espaçamento celular (λC), proporcionando maiores valores de ?E, porém, λC mais grosseiros.O intermetálico NiSn4 formou-se na região eutética de ambas as ligas, enquanto que na liga Sn-0,5%Ni, as fases primárias identificadas por EDS-MEV foram NiSn4 e Ni3Sn4. A transição morfológica celular/dendrítica(?E> 1,2ºC/s) ocorreu apenas para a liga eutética, enquanto que as células regulares da liga hipereutética deram origem as células do tipo placas(?E> 1,4ºC/s).

The Main Zone and Waterline pit lakes at the Equity Silver Mine near Houston, BC (Canada) are the sites of a new 3-yr research program with three primary goals: 1) understanding controls on metal concentrations in the lakes; 2) using mesocosms to test a variety of remediation strategies; and 3) verifying and improving an existing coupled physical-geochemical model with the goal of improving predictions of pit lake water quality. Initial data from two summer surveys in the Main Zone pit lake reveal elevated dissolved metal concentrations (e.g. [Zn] as high as 800 µg/L) present in a two-meter-deep mixed layer, and elevated particulate metal concentrations towards the bottom of the water column. Hydroxide sludge, a byproduct of ARD treatment, is being discharged to the surface waters of the Main Zone pit lake. The sludge sinks rapidly to the lake bottom, leading to deep waters with elevated levels of dissolved O2 and total metals. By contrast, the deep waters of the proximal Waterline pit lake are mildly reducing, manifested by depletion of O2 and elevated levels of dissolved Fe. These reducing conditions have led to elevated levels of As (up to 1500 µg/L) in Waterline pit deep waters. The contrasting behavior of these two pit lakes, as well as the processes controlling metal concentrations in the lakes, will be discussed.

The effect or various oxidants on gold and silver dissolution in thiourea solutions (0.05 M in H2SO4) was studied using the rotating disc technique, a.t 2s c and 600 rpm. These studies were carried out at constant (4:1) initial molar ratio or thiourea to oxidant concentrations, to produce 50 % thiourea. oxidation. The initial dissolution rate of gold was approximately four times higher in the presence. of ferric sulfate (5.37 x 10-3mg cm-2 s-1) than in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), potassium persultate (K2S2O3), or monopersulfa.te (KHS06). The dissolution rates for silver were considerably lower than gold for the same oxidants. Oxidation of thiourea in the presence of peroxygen and persulta.te compounds is a. fast reaction and it is completed in less than ten minutes. On the other hand, the oxidation or thiourea with? ferric.sulfate is slow, yielding a second-order reaction rate constant k = 6.09 I mol-1 h-1. Sulfur formation in the ferric thiourea system begins when ferric ion reduction approaches to completion. With hydrogen peroxide, sulfur is observed at lower thiourea concentration than ferric. Suifate. The presence of a large excess or free thiourea i.e., s to 20 % thiourea oxidation) retards sulfur formation and maintains favorable dissolution rates. Finally, carbon-in-leach experiments indicate that thiourea solutions a.re stable for several days, with ferric sulfate or hydrogen peroxide. The dissolution rates of gold and silver doubles in the presence or activated carbon when hydrogen peroxide is used as oxidant.

A nitretação dos aços inoxidáveis tem sido objeto de diversos estudos nas últimas décadas. O objetivo primordial é promover o endurecimento superficial e com isso elevar a resistência ao desgaste, sem comprometer a resistência à corrosão. Em vista disto, a nitretação sob plasma a baixa temperatura, abaixo de 430oC, tem se mostrado um processo eficiente para inibir a precipitação de nitretos de cromo e promover o endurecimento superficial pela formação de fases expandidas pela supersaturação de nitrogênio. Este trabalho mostra a formação de ferrita expandida em um aço inoxidável ferrítico. Para isso foi utilizada o processo de nitretação sob Plasma-DC na temperatura de 400oC por 20 horas em mistura gasosa contendo 75%N2 e 25%H2. Os resultados de Difração de Raios-X mostraram que a nitretação em baixa temperatura é capaz de formar uma camada nitretada de ferrita expandida. Em Microscopia óptica observa-se uma camada homogênea com profundidade média de 32 microns de profundidade e dureza média de 1296 HV promovendo um endurecimento superficial do aço inoxidável ferrítico em mais de 5 vezes sem que ocorra a precipitação de nitretos de cromo e, com isso, preservado a resistência à corrosão.

In situ synchrotron X-ray and in situ neutron diffraction-based experimentation have been implemented to characterise the formation of the complex calcium ferrite iron ore sinter bonding phases silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) and SFCA-I. Experiments were carried out using fine-grained (<20 ¦m) sinter mixtures containing ~77 wt per cent Fe2O3, 14 wt per cent CaO, 3.5 wt per cent SiO2 and 5 wt per cent Al2O3, with diffraction data collected during heating until 1300 - 1350¦C, which was enough to ensure complete melting of the SFCA phases. In the case of the in situ synchrotron experimentation, results showed that altering the nature of the starting sinter mixture (ie substitution of goethite for hematite; substitution of an amorphous Al2O3-based mineral for gibbsite) did not have a significant effect on the thermal stability range of the SFCA phases. It did, however, have a profound effect on the formation and rate of consumption of the calcium-rich ferrite phases C2F and CF, and on the formation mechanisms of SFCA and SFCA-I. The in situ neutron diffraction experimentation is the first described in the context of iron ore sintering, and the observation of both SFCA-I and SFCA formation in the in situ diffraction data represents the first step in achieving the goal of charactering iron ore sinter phase formation in large volumes of industrial sinter starting materials with a wide range of particle sizes (up to 6.3 mm).CITATION:Webster, N A S, Pownceby, M I, Madsen, I C, Studer, A J, Lu, L, Manuel, J R, Kimpton, J A and Fisher-White, M J, 2013. O desgaseificador RH é um reator de refino secundário bem estabelecido. Nesse equipamento, gás inerte é usado para promover a circulação de aço entre a panela de aciaria e uma câmara de vácuo. A predição correta da dispersão de gás na perna de subida do RH é importante para a modelagem confiável do processo. O presente trabalho estudou a penetração de gás na perna de subida do RH por meio de modelos físico e matemático. No estudo, foram considerados apenas um ou dois bicos injetores e vazões de gás, por bico, entre 5l/min e 50l/min. Para as condições com um bico injetor, os resultados das duas abordagens mostraram boa concordância qualitativa. Já para as condições com dois bicos injetores, a concordância só foi satisfatória para vazões de até 30l/min por bico. Adicionalmente, os resultados obtidos indicaram que o problema de penetração de gás em modelos matemáticos de desgaseificador RH identificado na literatura está relacionado com erros numéricos e não com falhas na modelagem da física do problema.

A influência da temperatura de reaquecimento e do tempo entre passes na evolução microestrutural dos ASTM F138 e ISO 5832-9 durante o processamento termomecânico simulado foram investigados. Ambos os materiais foram reaquecidos a 1200°C e, por comparação, o ISO 5832-9 foi reaquecido a 1250°C. As amostras foram submetidas a simulações de deformações em testes de torção com tempo entre passes de 50 e 5 s. As amostras foram caracterizadas por MO, MET, EDX, EBSD e testes de microdurezas. As curvas de tensão-deformação, a evolução microestrutural e precipitação foram analisadas e correlacionadas com o refinamento de grãos. O aço ISO 5832-9 reaquecido a 1250°C mostrou um comportamento diferente devido a maior dissolução dos precipitados.

O objetivo do SHTPN (Solution Heat Treatment after Plasma Nitriding) é a adição de nitrogênio em solução sólida na superfície, formando austenita durante o tratamento térmico de solubilização, possibilitando a obtenção de martensita de nitrogênio após o resfriamento. Foram ensaiadas amostras nas condições: de fornecimento (microestrutura ferrítica); nitretada (com camada de compostos); após SHTPN (martensita não revenida); e SHTPN seguido de quatro temperaturas de revenimento (martensita revenida). Os ensaios tribológicos foram realizados em placa contra esfera de metal duro, movimento recíproco. Os mecanismos de desgaste foram caracterizados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e as profundidades das pistas foram medidas em rugosímetro 3D. A condição de maior resistência ao desgaste foi a nitretada. Entretanto, a superfície desgastada destas amostras apresentou microtrincas. O comportamento tribológico da amostra revenida a 600°C foi similar ao observado para amostra no estado de fornecimento, pois apresentaram predominância do mecanismo de adesão, com grandes deformações plásticas na superfície. Todas as outras condições apresentaram menores profundidades de desgaste do que o estado de fornecimento, com mecanismos predominantes transitando de abrasão para adesão com o aumento da temperatura de revenimento. Na amostra após SHTPN, a baixa capacidade de deformação plástica da camada martensítica não revenida causou fratura do material nas laterais da pista, o que não ocorreu para as condições revenidas.

AN intrusive body is a mass of igneous rock that has migrated upward, presumably from great depths. Great variations in form, composition and depth of burial occur. It is not proposed in this paper to go into all of the details of the problem. Instead, it will be assumed here that the intrusive has the form and characteristics represented in Fig. I. According to W. H. Emmons,1 minerals are not deposited in appreciable quantities below the "dead line." Important amounts of ores of virtually all metals may be found around summit cupolas, but only gold, copper and zinc (in limited quantities) are usually associated with trough cupolas. Most students of ore deposits agree that temperature changes are largely instrumental in precipitating many ores in the "hood" and that the difference in temperature between the intrusive and that of the country rock may be the chief factor in determining the mineralogy of a deposit. A problem then of some interest is to correlate the principal physical features of the intrusive with the phenomena of heat conduction as evidenced by the cooling curves and the isothermal surfaces. MATHEMATICAL THEORY In order to show the possible application of heat conduction to the interpretation of the processes of metalliferous deposition associated with intrusives, it will be assumed that the intrusive is a large parallelopiped of dimensions, 2l, 2m, 2n. Quantitative knowledge of the time clement involved in austenite transformation in a particular steel provides a sound basis for understanding and planning heat-treatment. Such knowledge is conveniently obtained by measurement of austenite transformation as it occurs at each of a series of temperature levels. The results of these measurements usually are summarized in the form of the now familiar isothermal transformation diagram (I-T diagram, TTT diagram, or S-curve). Although a considerable number of such diagrams already have appeared in the literature, there remain many compositions of commercial importance for which no I-T diagram is available. The diagram for many such steels may be predicted from published data with sufficient accuracy for most practical purposes, but for others no satisfactory prediction can be made because the effect on austenite transformation of one or more of the important alloying elements present is not well enough known. Such a steel is Nitralloy, Type 13s-Modified, which, containing about 1.25 per cent aluminum, differs from any whose I-T diagram has been published. This paper presents results of a study of the isothermal transformation behavior of a sample from a commercial heat of this aluminum-chromium-molybdenum steel, together with pertinent supplementary data including the equilibrium transformation temperatures (Aeaand Ae,), the temperature range of martensite formation, and the end-quench harden-ability. These data are directly applicable to the hcat-treatment of this type of steel and are of interest in revealing some of the fundamental effects of aluminum as an alloying element in steel. Material All specimens were prepared from a 1 1/4 i-in. diam bar forged from a 5 by 5-in. billet from a commercial heat made in an electric arc furnace. The composition of the bar was; C, 0.41 per cent: AIn, 0.57: P, 0.016: S, 0.005: Si, 0.24: Ni, 0.17: Cr, I.j7: Mo, 0.36: All 1.26. The forged bar was normalized from r750°F (95s°C) and then tempered for one hour at rzoo°F (650°C), this tempering treatment having been given to facilitate the machining of specimens. Such knowledge is conveniently obtained by measurement of austenite transformation as it occurs at each of a series of temperature levels. The results of these measurements usually are summarized in the form of the now familiar isothermal transformation diagram (I-T diagram, TTT diagram, or S-curve). Although a considerable number of such diagrams already have appeared in the literature, there remain many compositions of commercial importance for which no I-T diagram is available. The diagram for many such steels may be predicted from published data with sufficient accuracy for most practical purposes, but for others no satisfactory prediction can be made because the effect on austenite transformation of one or more of the important alloying elements present is not well enough known. Such a steel is Nitralloy, Type 13s-Modified, which, containing about 1.25 per cent aluminum, differs from any whose I-T diagram has been published. This paper presents results of a study of the isothermal transformation behavior of a sample from a commercial heat of this aluminum-chromium-molybdenum steel, together with pertinent supplementary data including the equilibrium transformation temperatures (Aeaand Ae,), the temperature range of martensite formation, and the end-quench harden-ability. These data are directly applicable to the hcat-treatment of this type of steel and are of interest in revealing some of the fundamental effects of aluminum as an alloying element in steel. Material All specimens were prepared from a 1 1/4 i-in. diam bar forged from a 5 by 5-in. billet from a commercial heat made in an electric arc furnace. The composition of the bar was; C, 0.41 per cent: AIn, 0.57: P, 0.016: S, 0.005: Si, 0.24: Ni, 0.17: Cr, I.j7: Mo, 0.36: All 1.26. The forged bar was normalized from r750°F (95s°C) and then tempered for one hour at rzoo°F (650°C), this tempering treatment having been given to facilitate the machining of specimens. Equilibrium Transformation Temperatures In hypoeutectoid steel the minimum temperature at which austenite is completely stable, Aep, and the maximum temperature at which austenite is completely unstable, Ael, are of great significance in heat-treatment. Coal bumps are brittle, violent failures associated with high stresses and competent host strata. To study bump mechanisms, conditions in the vicinity of a deep longwall mining face in bump-prone strata were monitored using three discrete systems. First, a microseismic monitoring network recorded mining-induced seismic events throughout the mine and surrounding strata. Second, pressure variations and distributions on the longwall shield legs across the face were recorded. Last, tomography surveys imaged seismic transmission properties ahead of the face. Results from the three systems were correlated in an effort to increase understanding of mining-induced stress redistribution and bump potential. An initial, one-week study showed that the correlation between averaged tomogram values and seismically active areas had a coefficient of correlation (R) of 0.89. Further results of these studies demonstrate that the tomography system is capable of imaging heavy shield-leg loading and bump-prone conditions prior to them disrupting the face operations.

A utilização de fibras de naturais como agente de reforço tem sido amplamente estudada, pois é uma alternativa para o desenvolvimento de materiais sustentáveis. Assim esse trabalho tem por objetivo estudar o comportamento em flexão de compósitos de matriz poliéster reforçados com fibras de bagaço de cana de açúcar. Foram produzidos compósitos com adição de 0, 10, 20 e 30% em volume de fibra e, depois, testados em flexão em 3 pontos. Os resultados mostraram que adição das fibras reduziu a resistência à flexão, porém, mesmo com uma queda dessa propriedade, os resultados são similares aos encontrados na literatura.
