O fenômeno de degradação granulométrica de minérios devido à crepitação se apresenta como uma fonte geradora de finos que em excesso prejudica a permeabilidade da carga e diminui o rendimento da produção. Neste trabalho, realizou-se um estudo da crepitação de minérios de ferro da Sidermin (Siderúrgica Mineira) para dois períodos diferentes de 8 dias cada, num primeiro período o mecanismo de secagem do minério estava ativo e no outro seguinte não estava. Os resultados para crepitação foram satisfatórios pelo processo de pré-secagem do minério de ferro com gás de topo, pois resultou num aumento de produção por amenizar o fenômeno de crepitação.

Black Thor chromite ore from the Ring of Fire deposit in Northern Ontario was carbothermically reduced in a microwave system to produce a ferrochromium alloy. The as-received ore contained 43.0% Cr2O3, 19.9% Fe2O3, 14.5% MgO, 13.4% Al2O3, and 7.0% SiO2. Activated charcoal was utilized as the reducing agent. Firstly, TGA/DTA and permittivity studies were carried out in order to determine the relationship between the reduction process and the microwave susceptibility. Secondly, microwave reduction experiments were performed on the chromite ore. The variables investigated were; the amount of carbon, processing time, input power and type of atmosphere. A maximum chromium grade of 76.1% and a chromium metallization of 82.7% were obtained for a processing time of 20 minutes, a power input of 800 W, and a carbon addition of 15% in an argon atmosphere.

During copper production in shaft and flash smelting processes at KGHM Polska Miedz S.A., lead bearing material of sulfide, sulfate, and oxide character is generated in forms such as slime from shaft furnace gas handling systems, converter dusts, and dusts from an electric furnace for copper removal from flash smelting slag. These materials are polymetallic concentrates of Pb, Zn, and Cu, with As, Cl, and Cd as impurities. Shaft furnace slime, containing. about 50% PbS and 15% bituminous substances, is the main lead-bearing material. At the Glogów copper mill, a new plant was commissioned in June 2001 to process 80,000 tonnes per year of lead bearing materials to produce 26,000 tonnes per year of crude lead. The plant consists of a feed conditioning system, three (3) rotary rocking furnaces with a capacity of sixteen (16) tonnes of lead feed fired with natural gas and oxygen-enriched air containing up to 45 vol% O2, and a gas handling system. The gas handling system includes a post-combustion chamber, a gas cooling chamber with Cl neutralization, gas mixing chamber, bag filter, and dry limestone scrubbing system for SO2 removal. The lead-bearing feed is smelted with five (5) wt% Na2CO3 and thirteen (13) wt% iron scrap at a temperature of 950 to 1050°C for three (3) hours. The smelting process consists of four (4) stages; feed drying, firing of gaseous hydrocarbons and solid coal from the feed, lead reduction from slag, and separation of molten products. The flow rates of natural gas and oxygen to the burners are controlled to ensure combustion of the bituminous material in the furnace. The process produces crude lead bullion containing (wt%) 0.1 to 0.5% Cu, 0.02 to 0.5% As, 0.05 to 0.07% Bi, 0.1 to 0.5% Sb, and 0.1 to 0.6%Sn. The process also produces a mixture of sodium silicate slag, Fe-Zn-Pb-Cu-S matte, and Fe-As speiss containing (wt%) 5 to 10% Pb, 2 to 6% Cu, 10 to 15% Zn, 1 to 3% As, 10 to 15% S, 0.5 to 3.0% Cl, 2 to 4% K, 4 to 7% Na, 20 to 30% Fe, and 5 to 10% SiO2. The dust is made up of PbO, ZnO, PbSO4, and PbCI2, KCI, and NaCI with a chemical composition (wt%) of 35 to 50% Pb, 5 to 15% Zn, 3 to 6% As, 4 to 8% Cl, 2 to 5% K, and 2 to 5% Na. The construction of the new lead production plant at the Glogów copper mill will process both current lead-bearing materials as well as lead-bearing material that have been stockpiled over the last fifteen (15) years to give a significant improvement in protection of the natural environment.

Este trabalho propõe a utilização de simulação computacional adotando princípios de volumes finitos para avaliação do escoamento gasoso em torre de apagamento de coque. Tal simulação poderá fornecer dados, favorecendo a aplicação de tecnologias para redução e controle de emissões de material particulado no período do banho do coque, assim como estimar as variações e características da pluma emitida com a instalação de dispositivos de controle ambiental. Neste estudo são destacados os principais fatores para aplicação da simulação computacional, considerando as condições de contorno; modelos de evaporação; propriedades termofísicas e previsão de saída. Como variáveis de entrada para o modelo apresentado, foram selecionadas a concentração e granulometria do material particulado de vapor d’água da torre de apagamento de coque, através de ensaio de isocinética; as características físico-químicas da água de apagamento; as condições estruturais da torre de apagamento de coque e ciclos de apagamento de coque. Para validar a proposta apresentada, são mostrados resultados baseados nas simulações com o modelo computacional proposto.

"The Moa JV was formed in December 1994 as a 50/50 joint venture between Sherritt Inc. and General Nickel Company S.A. of Cuba. The joint venture consists of the mine and Pedro Sotto Alba processing plant in Moa, Cuba and the Corefco refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. Throughout its now nearly 23-year history, the Moa Joint Venture has faced a number of global, operational and process challenges. Global challenges have included high input costs such as for fuel oil and sulphur, as well as low nickel prices. Operational and process challenges have included increasing ore haulage distances, decreasing ore Ni + Co grades, and increasing ore impurity contents. For example, increases in impurities such as Mg and SiO2 in the ore result in increasing acid demand in leaching and decreasing solids content of preheated leach feed slurry, respectively. In spite of these challenges, the mixed sulphide production capacity from the Moa Joint Venture has increased from 12,500 to 37,000 t/y Ni + Co since 1994 by judiciously targeting expansion projects and by continuously performing process and operational improvements.INTRODUCTION The Pedro Sotto Alba high pressure acid leach (HPAL) plant at Moa Bay, Cuba has a long history (Maslenitzkiy, 1969; Chalkley, 1996; Carlson, 1960; Roy, 1961; Carlson 1961). The plant was constructed by Moa Bay Mining Company and started up in late 1959 after several years of process development by Freeport Nickel Company, including operation of a 10 t/d plant in Hoskins Mound, Texas and a 50 t/d plant in Port Nickel, Louisiana (Southwick, 2004), as well as development work by Chemical Construction Company (Chemico) to precipitate metal sulphides (Roy, 1955a; Roy, 1955b). The Moa plant had an original reserve of 50,000,000 t of ore, graded at 1.35 wt% Ni, 0.146 wt% Co, 3.70 wt% Si, 1.00 wt% Mg and 4.5 wt% Al. At original design rates of 2,000 kt/y of ore, the design capacity of the plant was around 25,000 t/y Ni + Co as a mixed sulphide product, which would be shipped to the Port Nickel Refinery in Louisiana for processing. In 1960, the plant changed ownership and was restarted in 1961 under Cuban management. Between 1961 and 1989, the plant was also supported by involvement from the former USSR, supplying spare parts and consumables. In 1994, Sherritt Inc. partnered with the General Nickel Co. S.A. of Cuba and formed the Moa Joint Venture. This joint venture includes the mine and Pedro Sotto Alba HPAL processing plant in Cuba and the Corefco refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. Under this partnership, ore is processed in Cuba to produce a nominally 55 wt% Ni and 5 wt% Co mixed sulphide product that is shipped to Canada and processed by Corefco to produce class 1 nickel, high grade cobalt and byproduct ammonium sulphate fertilizer."

All samples tested showed some loss of heating value for the 5-month period under all 4 storage conditions. The losses increased as the time of storage increased, with the pan-storage samples showing somewhat greater losses than those in cans. The individual daily analyses for the first 2 weeks and the analyses every other day for the third and fourth weeks of storage vary within the approximate tolerance of the test for heating value. During the first 2 months of storage the changes in heating values were not Significant for the samples from Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Colorado. The Ohio coal indicated some loss by the end of I month, which increased to a value measurable with certainty by the end of 2 months. These data show that (1) small changes may occur even to samples in closed cans and (2) the laboratory sample should be handled as expeditiously as is practical until the analysis is completed. The statement by the ASTM that "If the B.t.u. determination is an important consideration in the sale of coal, the time elapsed between sampling and analysis shall not exceed 30 days,"3/ is quite adequate for 3 of the 4 coals tested. The change in the Ohio coal stored for 30 days is merely indicated and could not be determined with certainty by the techniques normally employed. The data on free-swelling indexes determined on can samples, after 30° C. air drying, show that only the Indiana coal lost more than one unit in free-swelling index number in 120 days. No significant changes were observed with the samples from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Colorado in the 5-month period.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar as possíveis transformações microestruturais ocorridas em um aço de alta dureza submetido a altas taxas de deformação induzida por impacto balístico de um projetil 7,62x51 mm perfurante (Pf). Este aço, produzido por siderúrgicas nacionais, compõe o quadro de materiais nacionais usados como blindagens para proteção veicular. Após o ensaio balístico, a microestrutura do material “como recebido” e da região adjacente ao impacto, foi analisada por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os resultados comprovaram o surgimento da microestrutura conhecida por banda de cisalhamento adiabático nos impactos que produziram perfuração, ou seja, penetração completa do projetil, de acordo com o critério da Marinha.

Two types of low-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation may be recognised in volcanic terranes. Chalcedonic Silica- Adularia-Illite type mineralisation is most common in rhyolitic terranes, whereas Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia- Kaolinite) type mineralisation is more typically formed in andesitic terranes. A third type of epithermal mineralisation, the high sulphidation or Vuggy Silica-Alunite- Kaolinite-Illite type, is also common in andesitic terranes. Episodic violent boiling, accompanying hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions, characteristic of geothermal systems in rhyolitic terranes, is stressed for the formation of Chalcedonic Silica mineralisation. Such boiling of deeply circulating meteoric groundwater, with some magmatic fluid contribution, provides chalcedonic veining, episodic banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S from the fluid to cause major gold deposition. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably caused by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwater with ascending deep geothermal fluids beneath andesitic strato- volcanoes. The cooling effect, oxidation, and increased acidity, overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of metals. Extensive formation of base-metal sulphides further enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling is restricted to local structural dilation sites, potentially producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

As matérias primas para Alto Forno devem ter qualidade física adequada para melhor controle do processo e estabilidade operacional. A distribuição granulométrica e consequentemente sua estabilidade são importantes, pois interferem na porosidade e permeabilidade no interior do Alto-Forno, criando assim uma condição adequada e específica de marcha com reflexo na estabilidade da produção de gusa. A Sinterização da ThyssenKrupp Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico (TKCSA) foi projetada sem britagem secundária, devido à fase de ajustes no processo operacional e baixa produtividade havia dificuldade para controlar a fração grossa do sinter (> 50 mm), impactando na distribuição granulométrica do sinter. Visando reduzir os desvios da qualidade física, estudou-se a melhor relação da altura de camada x velocidade da esteira encontrando um ponto de equilíbrio entre os níveis de produção e qualidade especificada que, juntamente com o início da operação do britador secundário, resultou na garantia da qualidade física do sinter para os Altos Fornos. Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar o desenvolvimento e resultados deste estudo.

TWINNING in magnesium is known to occur profusely under certain conditions, and when it occurs in polycrystalline materials it brings about a partial or even a complete change in the preferred orientation. The amount of research on this subject, however, has not been in proportion to its importance as a mechanism of deformation and reorientation. Much of the research has been limited to twinning in single crystals. The present study' concerns polycrystalline sheet, and is an investigation of the twinning produced by plastic deformation as a function of the following variables: I. Direction and type of deformation. 2. Amount of deformation. 3. Speed of deformation. 4. Temperature of deformation. 5. Composition and temper of the sheet. 6. Twins previously produced. 7. Twins previously produced, then annealed. By proper control of these variables it is shown that, on a laboratory scale, samples can be produced that are free from preferred orientations. MATERIALS AND METHODS The materials used were samples of commercial magnesium-alloy sheets with nominal compositions given in Table I. [ ] X-ray diffraction was used in most of this work to detect the twins and to estimate the amount of twinning. Since twinning on {102} planes causes a reorientation of the crystal lattice by 86°, it is very easy to study with X-ray diffraction patterns, particularly if one notices the diffraction ring from the basal plane the 002 reflection. By properly directing the X-ray beam, it is possible to produce 002 reflections from twinned material at, say, the 6 and 12 o'clock positions on the 002 ring, with the untwinned material reflecting to 3 and 9 o'clock positions; and by judging the relative intensity of the arcs on the diffraction ring at these positions, it is possible to judge the amount of twinned material relative to the untwinned. Ruídos elétricos afetam os circuitos lógicos e conseqüentemente podem comprometer a confiabilidade nos controles de processos, e para minimizar as influências desses ruídos, algumas medidas básicas foram tomadas, com instalações adequadas de todo o sistema, como padronização do aterramento, encaminhamento de cabos, etc. Depois que as medidas foram implementadas, o resultado foi um sistema mais confiável. Se apenas um fio for encaminhado de forma incorreta ou se o aterramento estiver inadequado, pode ser suficiente para causar problemas. A experiência mostra que é muito difícil que todas as medidas sejam aplicadas integralmente, mas se não forem tomadas pelo menos as medidas básicas, o sistema ficará suscetível.

A group of 17 American blast-furnace sinters, an American open-hearth sinter, an American iron ore, and a Swedish sinter were used to evaluate testing methods adapted to appraise sinter properties. Statistical calculations were performed on the data to determine correlation coefficients for several sets of sinter properties. Properties of strength and dusting were related to total porosity, slag ratio, and total slag. Reducibility was related to the degree of oxidation of the sinters. THIS report to the American iron and steel industry marks the completion of a 1949 survey of blast-furnace sinter practice sponsored by the Subcommittee on Agglomeration of Fines of the American Iron & Steel Institute. The use of sinter in blast furnaces, sinter properties, raw materials, and sinter plant operation have been reported recently.1,2 After preliminary research and study," test procedures were adapted to appraise the physical and chemical properties of sinter to determine what constitutes a good sinter. During the 1949 to 1950 plant survey each plant submitted a 400-lb grab sample to research personnel at Mellon Institute, Pittsburgh, Pa. A 400-lb sample was also submitted from Sweden. In addition, 2 tons of group 3 fines iron ore were obtained from a Pittsburgh steel plant. The following tests were performed on the iron ore sample and on the 19 sinter samples: chemical analysis; impact test for strength and dusting; reducibility test; surface area measurements, B.E.T. nitrogen adsorption method; S.K. porosity test; Davis tube magnetic analysis; X-ray diffraction analysis for magnetite and hematite; and microstructure. Results of these evaluations are discussed in this paper and supply a critical look at testing procedures used to determine sinter quality. Sinter Tests and Results Each 400-lb grab sample of sinter was secured at a time when it was believed to represent normal production practice at each plant. It was not possible to use the same sampling procedures throughout the survey; consequently samples were taken from blast-furnace bins, cooling tables, and railroad cars. These were very useful for evaluation of test methods, since they were obtained from plants with widely divergent operations. With the exception of Swedish sinter and sinter sample N, which were produced on the Greenawalt type of pans, all survey sinters were produced on the Dwight-Lloyd type of sintering machines. Sinters submitted for test were prepared in identical manner by crushing in a roll crusher (set at 1 in.), mixing, and quartering. To secure specific size fractions for tests, one quarter of the sample was crushed in a jaw crusher and hammer mill to obtain a —10 mesh size. The remainder was screened to obtain specific size fractions. The group 3 fines iron ore was dried and screened and samples were taken from selected screen sizes to be used for various tests. Prior to testing, each ore sample except the —100 mesh fraction was washed with water to remove all fine material and was then dried. This iron ore, a hematitic ore from the Lake Superior region, was used as a base line for comparing results of tests on sinters. The iron ore did not lend itself to impact testing, since it was compacted rather than crushed in the test, and no impact tests are reported. However, the iron ore was subjected to all remaining physical tests to be described. Chemical Analysis: Table I presents chemical analyses performed on the survey sinter samples. Included in this table are data obtained from determination of FeO and the slag relationships: CaO + MgO and total slag (CaO + MgO + SiO, SiO2 + Al2o3 + TiO2). The percentage of FeO was used as an indication of the percentage of magnetite in the sinter. It was believed that slag relationships could be correlated with sinter properties. During initial determination of FeO great disagreement arose among various laboratories, both as to the results and the methods of determining values. Table I lists the values of FeO resulting from the U. S. Steel Corp. method of chemical analysis,' which reports the total FeO soluble in hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids (metallic iron not removed) with dry ice used to produce the protective atmosphere during digestion. Use of dry ice was a modification required to obtain reproducible results. In this method, the iron silicates and metallic iron are believed to go into solution and are therefore reported as FeO. This is important, for in the study of the microstructure of sinters, glassy constituents suspected of containing FeO as well as crystallized phases of undetermined identity which may also contain FeO have been observed. Strength Test by Impact: In evaluating sinter quality, one of the properties stressed most by blastfurnace operators is strength. This strength may be described as the resistance to breakage during handling of sinter between the sinter plant and the blast-furnace bins. "The recovery of gold by gravity from grinding circuits differs from virtually all other gravity recovery approaches in that stage (or unit) recoveries are low, typically 1 to 5%, but overall recoveries are generally in the 25 to 60% range, because individual gold particles are presented many times to the primary recovery unit. Full-scale recovery is difficult to predict from benchscale tests. Further, maximizing metallurgical recovery is generally not the primary objective, because of the more efficient downstream recovery circuit (flotation or cyanidation). In this paper, a new concept, the gravity recovery effort, is presented to assist in the design and optimization of gold gravity circuits. It is defined as the product of the circulating load treated by the primary gravity unit, the recovery of this unit, and the gold room recovery. Predicted gold recovery is linked to the recovery effort, the size distribution of gravity recoverable gold (GRG), the dimensionless retention time in the mill and the partition curve of GRG. A case study of economic optimization of the gravity recovery effort is presented. INTRODUCTIONPredicting gold gravity recovery from grinding circuits has always been a hit-and-miss exercise. The problem can be traced to the highly variable gravity recoverable gold (GRG) content of ores, high GRG circulating load, fraction of the circulating load treated, and performance of primary gravity recovery and gold room. O presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a resistência à corrosão de dois aços alto teor de Manganês com relação à liga 9% Níquel em solução eletrólito 0,001M de NaCl. Para esta pesquisa foram utilizados dois aços com teores de Manganês de 22%, 27% e uma liga 9% Níquel que é amplamente utilizada na indústria petroquímica. Os ensaios realizados para comparação da resistência à corrosão foram o monitoramento do potencial de circuito aberto (OCP) e polarização linear anódica. Foi escolhida a solução de NaCl pela presença da maioria dos tanques de armazenamento e transporte de gás natural se localizarem próximos à região marítima portuária. Foram utilizadas as técnicas de Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV), Microscopia óptica e Espectroscopia de Energia Dispersiva de Raios-X (EDS) para a caracterização dos produtos de corrosão. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que os aços alto Manganês apresentaram valores similares de resistência à corrosão, mas ainda inferiores em relação ao aço 9% Níquel.

O presente estudo visa avaliar a resistência à corrosão de dois aços alto manganês com relação ao aço 9% Níquel em solução eletrólito 0,001M de H2SO4. Para esta pesquisa foram utilizados dois aços com teores de manganês de 22% e 26%, e a liga de aço 9% Níquel que é amplamente utilizada na indústria petroquímica. Os ensaios realizados para comparação da resistência à corrosão foram o monitoramento do potencial de circuito aberto (OCP) e polarização linear anódica. Foi escolhida a solução de H2SO4 pela presença do enxofre, oriundo dos campos de produção como impureza no gás natural. Foram utilizadas as técnicas de Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) e Espectroscopia de Energia Dispersiva de Raios-X (EDS) para a caracterização dos produtos de corrosão. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que os aços alto Manganês apresentaram valores similares de resistência à corrosão, mas ainda inferiores em relação ao aço 9% Níquel.

"Emission of industrial wastewater containing harmful oxoanions is one of the serious problems on account of its toxicity and the environmental pollution, especially caused by boric, phosphinic, arsenic and antimonic species. In this study, we developed a novel treatment technique of such polluted-water by hydrothermal mineralization. The treatment is “Geomimetic” method for precipitating oxoanions in aqueous media as natural ore resources by using hydrothermal treatment with calcium salts mineralizer. The treatment made it possible not only to detoxify the polluted-water, but also to recover the calcium minerals such as Ca2B2O5·H2O, Ca5(AsO4)3(OH), etc. Concentration of each ion in treated-water was lower than that of effluent standard in Japan. Moreover, the residual concentration of each ion was independent of the initial concentration, but it depends only on the solubility of the formed mineral under hydrothermal condition. Therefore, the hydrothermal treatment could be recommended as one of the treatment techniques of polluted-water.IntroductionVarious oxoanions such as boron and arsenic oxo-anions have high toxicity against human health and the environment. They are important resources, however, for plating or advanced material manufacturing industries[1-3], from which the wastewater containing these oxoanions is generated every day. An appropriate treatment is often required for industrial wastewaters to attain national effluent standards of Japan (NESJ, B: 10 mg/dm3, As: 0.1 mg/dm3). On the other hand, there is no production of arsenic and boric resources in Japan, and they are expected to be recycled. Therefore, the establishment of a system for the removal and recycling of arsenic and boron from wastewaters is of global significance.Several methods to remove them from aqueous media have been already reported by using adsorption[4], electro-coagulation[5], membrane separation[6-8] and biological techniques[9]. However, these methods have the following problems because of their stability in water. (1) Removal yield is low, especially for tri-valent arsenite ion (AsIIIO3 3-) and borate ion. (2) The applicable concentration range is narrow. In addition, the used adsorbents or collected residues after treatments are sill hazardous wastes, so that they must be treated by a proper method. But, it is very difficult to convert them to recyclable resources at most industrial plants. These problems are caused by the difficulty to recover these oxoanions as stable solid precipitates with low solubility in water. The establishment of recycling system of these hazardous compounds will be one of the world-important issues, especially, in Japan, which is poor in natural resources. On the other hand, compounds that contain high arsenic concentrations and are insoluble in water, are often found in natural minerals, for example, as haidinglite (Ca(AsO3OH)·(H2O) or Johnbaumite (Ca5(AsO4)3(OH)). This fact suggests that nature has an ability to produce insoluble As-bearing minerals. Similar phenomena can be found in case of boron, antimony, etc."

O grande desafio para as empresas, principalmente as de grande porte, é ter controles desenvolvidos e simplificados de seus processos eliminando as vulnerabilidades encontradas, aumentando a produtividade, evitando desperdícios assim reduzindo custos e garantindo um bom nível de serviço para seus clientes, sejam eles internos ou externos. Este trabalho tem como objetivo demonstrar os ganhos obtidos com a criação de uma ferramenta automatizada de controle de materiais sobressalentes que são debitados do estoque contábil e que ficam aguardando sua aplicação em eventos de manutenção programados. Para alcançar o objetivo, foi desenvolvida uma transação no sistema SAP que possibilita a inserção de todas as informações necessárias para controle destes materiais eliminando a necessidade de controles paralelos. Com esta nova transação, conseguimos manter a rastreabilidade dos materiais em todas as etapas do processo até a aplicação pelo usuário final, trabalhando dentro do sistema homologado pela empresa, além de reduzir os estoques, devido a ter visibilidade destes materiais pelo setor de planejamento de materiais, evitando compras desnecessárias.

ReCENT work has indicated that the substantial decrease in the rate of fatigue crack propagation for aluminum observed below a critical vacuum level can be attributed to the depletion of oxygen or water vapor from the vicinity of the fatigue crack opening.' At reduced gas pressures, generally below 10-2 Torr with fatigue strain amplitudes in the range *1 to 2 x 10-3 and cyclic loading rates of 25 to 50 cps, estimated rates of oxide or hydroxide monolayer adsorption on newly formed crack surfaces can fall behind the actual rate of crack extension. Changes in the critical pressure required for the transition in fatigue behavior with changes in temperature, strain amplitude, and cyclic frequency can be interpreted from variations in the adsorption and crack growth rates.'" Although the adsorption model generally appears to explain the enhanced fatigue resistance of reactive metals in vacuum, the specific adsorbing gas species and nature of the adsorption mechanism are uncertain. In addition to the direct dissociation and adsorption of O2 on the metal surfaces,3 the dissociation of H20 and subsequent adsorption of H ions have been advanced for aluminum alloys.4 The present note describes some measurements of the fatigue behavior of 1100 aluminum in reduced partial pressures of specific gases including O2, H2O, and H2 in order to provide additional experimental data. Cantilever-type specimens of 1100-H14 aluminum were fatigued in cyclic reverse bending at constant strain amplitude using a multispecimen vacuum apparatus and procedure described previously.' After initial vacuum evacuation to 1 x 10-7 Torr, the appropriate gas species was bled into the system through a calibrated leak valve. The input rate was adjusted to maintain the desired pressure level under continuous evacuation, thus minimizing possible changes in gas composition during testing. High-purity input gases including 99.9 pct O2, 99.999 pct H 2, and water vapor from triply distilled H 2 O were used to provide residual pressures. Trace amounts of contaminant species were limited by passing the Oz and H 2 input gases through liquid-nitrogen-cooled copper coils prior to entry to the test chamber. Care was taken to repeatedly flush the gas lines and valves before testing to minimize the effect of adsorbed contaminants. Residual gas pressures in the range 10-6 to 5 x x3 Torr were monitored by an NRC ionization gage corrected for each gas species. In the higher-pressure range, 5 x 1CT3 to 5 x 10' Torr, an NRC alphatron gage was used. In operation, eight simultaneous fatigue tests were conducted at a constant strain amplitude of *1.2 x 10 at cyclic bending rates of 25 and 50 cps to give an average fatigue life of 6.5x 105 cycles-to-fracture at standard atmosphere and 3.3 x 106 cycles in 1 x 10"7 Torr vacuum. Representative results for the effect of residual O2, H2O, and H2 contents on the fatigue life are shown in Fig. 1 for tests performed at 50 cps. It is apparent that the presence of either O2 or H2O gas in the system at partial pressures greater than 10"3 Torr was noticeably detrimental to the fatigue life. In contrast, the enhanced fatigue resistance typical of high-vacuum environments was retained with pure H 2 through the pressure range up to 1 Torr.
