Production of magnesium metal in the United States during the past decade has increased from less than 600,000 lb. in 1928 to more than 4,800,000 lb. in 1938.1 The growing industry has stimulated interest in methods of production and in sources of raw material. All of the present domestic production is from brines. However, the availability of large tonnages of magnesite in the state of Washington, together with the possibility of cheap power, have created interest in the utilization of magnesite for the production of magnesium metal as well as for other purposes. Magnesite, the carbonate of magnesium (MgCO3), usually is associated with limestone (CaC03) and dolomite (MgCO3. CaC03). It occurs in crystalline and microcrystalline (sometimes termed amorphous) forms.2 The more common crystalline mineral is found in various shades of white, gray, yellow and brown, the colors being due to impurities, chiefly iron. Magnesite has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.5 and a specific gravity of 3.0 to 3.1. It forms rhombohedra1 crystals in the hexagonal system, having a vitreous, pearly luster. The quarries and mines of the Northwest Magnesite Co. near Chewelah, Wash., are large producers of magnesite for refractories. The deposits are extensive, some veins being hundreds of feet wide. The boundaries of the veins are indefinite, and the magnesite is interfingered with dolomite. Calcite, talc, serpentine, quartz and shale are disseminated through the deposits. The quality of the ore cannot be determined by appearance or by simple tests; chemical analysis is required. These features make it difficult to determine the boundaries or total quantity of workable ore.3 Only the higher-grade ores are mined, and a considerable proportion of the magnesite content is discarded by hand-sorting and log-washing methods. After calcining, the sorted product meets the specifications for usual refractory material, as it contains approximately 81 per cent MgO, 7 per cent SiO2, 6 per cent CaO and 6 per cent Fe203 + A1203. A sample of the reject material had the following analysis after calcining: 65.4 per cent MgO, 6.3 CaO, 21.1 SiO2 and 6.5 R2O3. The percentage reported as R2O3 includes compounds whose chlorides are acid-soluble but give precipitates in ammoniacal solution that are ignited and weighed. The more common constituents are Fe2O3, A1203 and TiO2. The sorted magnesite product is not the best grade. even for refractory purposes, and leaves much to be desired for a reduction process. The rejected material contains a large proportion of magnesite. It is apparent that an effective concentration method would yield a higher recovery and a better product. In the preparation of this paper, the author has drawn upon experience with the operation of a blast furnace on Ioo per cent scrap burden, which he believes was the first operation of its kind in the country. It is the writer's further belief that much of the controversy attending discussions of this subject may be obviated by the presentation of a group of facts that should be known by blast-furnace men and open-hearth men alike. The following question has been raised: "Is iron made with scrap in the blastfurnace charge as good iron as that made without scrap—made with straight ore?" This question may he answered in part by the fact that the open-hearth men of the Bethlehem Steel Co. who used pig iron from a blast furnace that operated on Ioo per cent steel scrap found no difficulty in the processing of such iron other than that to be expected from the known analysis. Operation with ioo PeR Cent Steel Scrap During World War I, there was accumulated at the Bethlehem plant of the Bethlehem Steel Co. some 22,000 tons of alloy-steel turnings and borings. This scrap material was highly corroded and, like alloy-steel turnings of that period, were as a drug on the market. There was also a small tonnage of scale, rich in valuable metal. If this scrap could be worked up into pig iron, it would become readily available for use in the open hearth. In order that the pig iron should contain the maximum percentage of nickel, permission was obtained from the Management to try a Ioo per cent scrap operation. Accordingly, a blast furnace was swung over on July 25, 1919; the percentage of steel scrap increased more or less irregularly until July 29, when Ioo per cent steel turnings were charged. Except for occasional charges of nickel scale as an "cxtra," the operation continued uninterruptedly until Aug. 27, when the furnace was swung back to the regular ore—ore and scrap—operation. During this period, the furnace production ranged from a low of 568.60 tons to a maximum of 766.07 tons. At the swing-over from Ioo per cent scrap to the regular burden, the charge I hung up rather severely. While the latter condition has nothing to do with the object of the paper, a brief discussion of the experience will appear later because of the interest it may have for blast-furnace operators. In Table I, results of the first and last days of the ore charge are shown, July 25 and July 29. The last column shows a summary for the period of maximum scrap ' charge. The furnace employed had a hearth 16 ft. o in., bosh 22 ft. o in., stock line 15 ft. 6 in., bell 11 ft. 6 in., batter in., bosh angle 73' 27' and a Balrer-Neuman top, with gas-engine blowers. Re crystallized TD-nickel mi-2Th0,) in both coated und uncoated conditions was fatigued at 1800°F at total strain ranges varying .from 0.2 to 0.75 pct. The fatigue life of uncoated inaferal, Nf, was related to the total strain range, ?eT, by (2Nf/021AeT = 0.014. A duplex Al-Cr pack coating increased the fatigue life by about a factor of two. The cracks that led to failure in both coated and uncoated material were initiated at the outer surface, indicating that the mechanical properties of the surface layers were important in determining fatigue life. Crack propagation and subsurface crack initiation in the TD-nickel occurred preferentially at grain boundaries with cavitation at thoria particle-matrix interfaces an integral part of the grain boundary fracture process. The importance of both the grain morphology developed during thermome chanical processing of TD-nickel and the distribution of thoria particle sizes to fatigue resistance are discussed. THE fatigue properties of only a few dispersion-strengthened metals have been studied at temperatures 0.5 Tm;1,2 among these have been lead and aluminum containing oxide dispersions. TD-nickel is a material of interest for application in aircraft gas turbine engines, but little fundamental information is available on its behavior under cyclic loading conditions. In this study, the low-cycle fatigue properties of TD-nickel were determined at 1800°F with emphasis on the 101-lowing; 1) the relation of the grain morphology produced during thermomechanical processing to crack initiation and propagation; 2) the role of thoria parti-cles in the fracture process; and 3) the effect of an oxidation resistant coating on fatigue life. I) MATERIAL AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The TD-nickel was supplied by DuPont as a 5/8-in. thick plate which had been subjected to a proprietary series of thermomechanical treatments with a final anneal at 2000°F for 1 hr in hydrogen. The composition of the material is given in Table I. At the test temperature of 1800°F, the 0.2 pct offset yield stress was 15,000 psi, and the elongation and reduction in area were 4.6 and 3.0 pct, respectively. The microstructure of this material has been previously described.&apos; Briefly, it consists of an array of lath-shaped grains, about 0.15 mm in thickness, with the long dimension of each grain parallel to the primary working direction, Fig. 1(a). The presence of very small annealing twirls, Fig. l(b ), together with the absence of extensive dislocation networks, Fig. L/C), indicated that the material was in the recrystal- Table I. Commercial TD-nickel sheet has a similar grain size and shape, but unlike the present material is not recrystallized as evidenced by the absence of annealing twins and the presence of a well-developed dislocation substructure.4 The plate material had Young&apos;s moduli in the rolling direction of 22 x 106 psi and 13 x 106 psi at room temperature and 1800°F, respectively, indicating a texture with a strong {100}<001> component in agreement with previous observations on recrystallized TD-nickel sheet.596 The 2.3 vol pct of thoria particles were uniformly distributed although some clustering and stringering of larger particles was occasionally seen. The average diameter of the particles was 450 and the calculated mean planar center-to-center spacing was 2100Å. Two specimens were coated with a duplex A1-Cr pack coating. The coating was somewhat nonuniform from one position to another along the gage length. An area of the coating after testing is shown in Fig. 2. Electron microprobe analysis revealed the following zones in the various lettered regions indicated in Fig. 2: A) a bcc matrix of B-NiA1 with some chromium in solid solution along with a fine dispersion of a chromium-rich second phase which was probably precipitated during cooling from the test temperature to room temperature; B) fcc y&apos;-Ni,Al with some chromium in solid solution; C) porosity; D) a two-phase mixture of a chromium-rich solid solution containing nickel and aluminum and a small volume fraction of a nickel-rich solid solution having approximately the same composition as the immediately adjacent portion of region E, E) the TD-nickel substrate containing chromium in solid solution to a depth of 5 to 10 mils. As expected from the nature of the diffusion processes involved,7 the thoria particles were present only up to the layer of porosity, region C, Fig. 2. The measured thickness of the coating proper, zones A to D, after testing was 1 to 2 mils. The specimen design and testing techniques have been previously discussed.&apos; Stressing was axial and parallel to the lath-shaped grains (i.e., parallel to the rolling direction). The total strain range was controlled between zero and a maximum tensile strain varying from 0.2 to 0.75 pct. Soil and Materials Engineers, Inc. (SME) has utilized drilled cast-in-place (D-CIP) piles on a number of projects in the midwest. These foundation systems have typically consisted of drilling an 8 to 9-inch diameter borehole with a rotary type drill rig or driving a casing with a small hammer. A structural steel member is installed in the center of the excavated space, and the borehole or casing is grouted to complete the installation of the D-CIP pile. This type of piling system has also been called: mini-pile, micro-pile, or drilled-in pier. The capacity of these piles varies depending upon subsurface conditions, as well as the structural capacity of the pile. The structural capacity can be modified based on the size and yield strength of the structural steel member. SME has used the D-CIP piles for underpinning of lightly-loaded structures for a number of years. Steel brackets can be welded to the structural steel member in the center of these piles, and the bracket extended underneath existing foundations to provide proper foundation support. D-CIP piles have also been used for new construction where access was limited. Recently, SME had the opportunity of providing design as well as construction monitoring services for a unique project where these piles were used, but at much higher capacity. The project involved adding seven additional floors on top of a five-story building (total of 12 stories). New columns were extended through the existing building to support the new floors. Access to construct foundations was available to one level of underground parking beneath the structure, as well as to a basement area. Access required equipment to travel through a 3-foot wide hallway. A special duplex drilling machine was used to access the foundation locations and to install the piles in a limited headroom condition. Eight-inch diameter D-CIP piles were extended to a depth of approximately 40 to 50 feet below grade and socketed into a dense clay till or sandstone, and No. 18 or No. 20 threaded bars were installed in the center of these piles. The design pile capacity was as high as 190 kips and were verified by a compression load test. The load test was performed with limited access and headroom. These piles were installed by Spencer White and Prentis Foundation Corporation (SWP). For conditions where rock or hard soils are encountered at reasonable depths, D-CIP piles can provide working load capacities comparable to larger driven steel piles. The ability of the equipment to access very restricted areas, combined with the high capacities results in a very attractive solution to a number of difficult foundation problems.

O presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar o efeito da conformação mecânica nas propriedades da liga Ti42Nb forjada a frio com 80% de encruamento e seguido de envelhecimento. Foram realizados ensaios de tração, medidas de dureza, metalografia e microscopia das superfícies de fratura. Foi possível observar que a liga Ti42Nb apresentou maior dureza e consequentemente maior resistência após o envelhecimento.

The evaluation of historical goldfields is currently topical, reflecting a high gold price, improvements in knowledge and technology. and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold; variable geometry and architecture; and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. The historic Engineer Mine property is located 32 km west of Atlin, British Columbia on the east side of Tagish Lake. The economically important Engineer and Double Decker veins belong to a NNE-SSW vein set. These are narrow, commonly &lt;2 m dilational veins with a minor sinistral strike component and of an epithermal type. Documented ore production between 1910 - 1952 is recorded as approximately 14 263 t at 39.4 g/t Au and 19.5 g/t Ag (for 18 000 oz Au and 8950 oz Ag). The underground workings consist of about 5500 m of tunnels, shafts, raises and stopes over eight levels. The mine is currently being re-evaluated. In 2011, an Inferred Mineral Resource of 41 000 t at 19 g/t Au for 25 000 oz Au (at a 5 g/t Au cut-off) was defined from historical data supported by modern drilling into the Engineer and Double Decker veins. A metal diaphragm pressure relay system was constructed to measure vapor pressures of the metal halides, oxyhalides, and other substances at temperatures up to 700° or 800° C. The vapor pressure of arsenic (III) oxide (As2O3) was determined to verify the reliability of the apparatus for such measurements. The data for the liquid AS2 Os (2820 to 4830 C) are represented by the equation, log Pmm = 6.875 - 2,929/T, from which the normal boiling point was calculated to be 461° C. The heat of vaporization calculated from this equation was 13.40 ±0.09 kcal/g mole As4OS and is essentially constant over the interval studied. The melting point of the octahedral arsenic (III) oxide was determined to be 278° C from the inter-section of the solid and liquid vapor pressure curves, A thermal analysis apparatus is also described by which melting and transition temperatures could be checked by a method independent of vapor pressure data. The melting points of the monoclinic and octahedral forms were determined to be 314.4 ±1.4° C and 278 ±5° C, respectively.

The Mount Charlotte gold mine is located 0.75 km east of the General Post Office in Hannan Street, Kalgoorlie WA and about 3.5 km north of the Fimiston Operations on the famous Golden Mile.Mechanised underground bulk-mining at Mount Charlotte has been in continuous operation since 1963. For the 30-year period ending December 1992, the mine produced 22 million tonnes (Mt) of ore for a recovery of 2.73 million ounces. During 1991/92, the mine produced 1.53 Mt of ore at a head grade of 3.15 gramshonne (g/t) for a recovery of 135 822 ounces.The principal ore source at Mount Charlotte has been the Charlotte Orebody which is now largely mined out. Since 1990, approximately 75 per cent of production has been sourced from the Reward Orebodies. The Charlotte Orebody was a relatively homogeneous quartz stockwork with simple geometry and average bulked grades in the range of 4.0 to 5.5 g/t. This is in contrast to the Reward Orebodies and the more recently defined Charlotte Deeps and Maritana Stockworks, which have complex grade distribution and geometry with lower average bulked grades (2 to 4 g/t). The lower grades are principally due to the decreased density and volume of stockwork venation and related vein halo alteration. Typically, these stockworks comprise a patchy mosaic of quartz veins and vein swarms, with irregular distribution and geometry within the quartz gabbro host rock.

I CANNOT agree with the results obtained by the committee. The gas obtained per pound of coal is too high in calorific value and the amount of gas is too large. It should require about 190 cu. ft. of oxygen per 1000 cu. ft. of gas and not 75.14 cu. ft. as is given on page 35 of the report, or about 2.5 as much. Calculating the calorific value per pound of coal from the coal analysis given on page 34, according to Dulong&apos;s formula, the gross and net calorific heat are about 12,890 and 12,430 B.t.u., respectively, which is about 18,600 and 17,900 B.t.u., respectively, per pound of carbon in the coal. This is an unusually high figure, as ordinary bituminous coal has less than 18,000 gross B.t.u. per pound of carbon. Assuming, however, that the calorific values calculated are correct, the following results are obtained. On page 35, the net calorific heat in the gas per pound of coal is given as 12,856 B.t.u. and calculation for the gross value shows it to be about 13,950; in other words, the gas contains (13,950 - 12,890) ÷ 12,890 = 8.2 per cent. more heat than the coal on a gross basis and (12,856 - 12,430) ÷ 12,430 = 3.4 per cent. more on a net basis. The calculated amount of carbon in this gas per pound of coal gasified is about 0.688 lb., or nearly the same as in the coal (0.6972) and the gross and net calorific heat per pound of carbon in the gas are 20,300 and 18,710 B.t.u. which are 9.1 and 4.5 per cent. more than for the carbon in the coal. These calculations show that the results given in the report cannot be correct. There must always be some heat losses in the gasification of coal, in radiation from the producer, and in sensible heat in the gas; there must be some loss of carbon in ashes and in soot, and there are always tarry vapors in the gases that are condensed and do not appear in the fixed gases. From the excessive heat in gas per pound of carbon contained therein, it can also be concluded that the percentage of hydrogen in the gas is too high, from which it follows that the moisture decomposed is too high and that more free oxygen must be used.

IN 1949 an orebody containing some 10 billion lb of recoverable rare earth metals was discovered in the Mountain Pass district of San Bernardino County, California.&apos; The following year Molybdenum Corp. of America purchased a number of claims at the deposit and a mill on the property which had been constructed to process the district&apos;s gold ores. Average composition of ore from the San Bernardino deposit is less than 0.1 pct Tho2, 25 to 35 pct calcite, 10 pct rare earth oxides, 15 to 20 pct silica, and 30 to 40 pct barite.&apos; Rare earth content of the ore analyzes 50.7 pct CeO2, 4.2 pct Pr6O11, 11.7 pct Nd2O3;, 1.3 pct Sm2O3,, and 34.3 pct La2O3 and others.&apos; By floating the barite and depressing the bastna-site, Molybdenum Corp. of America produced a concentrate that contained 60 to 70 pct rare earth oxides. More than 25 pct of the rare earths, however, was lost in flotation. It seemed likely that a more economical method could be found. At the present time most of the rare earths in the concentrates are converted to rare earth chlorides, which are either fed to ion exchange columns for separation of the individual rare earths or reduced to misch metal. Current investigation shows that solvent extraction may achieve this separation more economically than ion exchange. The study reported here was undertaken to develop an economical method of preparing a pure rare earth nitrate mixture from California bastnasite ore. Results indicated that more than 98 pct of the rare earths could be recovered. Several possibilities were considered for processing bastnasite ore, but only the method outlined in Fig. 1 was investigated. This involved leaching the calcined ore with nitric acid. The nitric acid process is discussed under the following headings: 1) calcination of the ore, 2) leaching of calcine, 3) filtration studies, 4) solvent extraction, and 5) nitric acid recovery. Calcination: Since California bastnasite ore contains 25 to 35 pct calcite and about 10 pct bastnasite, calcination was needed to reduce the violence of reaction with nitric acid. Weight losses of 26 to 30 pct were obtained by calcining the ore at 900°C for I hr or at 800°C for 4 hr. Longer periods resulted in no further weight loss. A modified transpiration reactor was used to measure the composition of the equilibrium gas phase formed above compounds in the Hg-O-S system at high temperatures (600 to 900K). A thermodynamic database {(AGo°f AH°t. AS°t)} for-HgO, HgS, HgSO4, Hg2SO4, HgSO4?HgO, and HgSO4?2HgO was developed based on the experimental results. Prior to this study, only estimated data were available in the literature for the sulfates and oxysulfates at temperatures above 298K. A series of vapor pressure&apos; stability diagrams were constructed from 473 to 973K with isobars of Hg(g), HgO(g), S2(g), and SO3(g). These diagrams were found to be significantly different than those available previously and do provide insight to the phase relations of importance during the thermal processing of Hg-containing wastes. The thermodynamic results were used to conduct a series of Gibbs energy minimization calculations for a thermal processor&apos; afterburner system for the treatment of HgS-containing wastes. The retention of Hg in the discharge calcine was examined as a function of temperature and excess air. Hg was found to report to the calcine as HgSO4, Hg2SO4, or HgSO4 HgO depending on the process conditions, and Hg retention occurs at temperatures as high as 930K. The precipitation of Hg-containing phases from cooled afterburner discharge gas starts at approximately 900K and the cooling of the gas an additional 30K (to 870K) results in over 50% of the Hg being preCipitated as HgS04?HgO. It was also determined that for small amounts of Hg present in sulfide concentrates during roasting, the Hg will be retained as HgSO4 or HgSO4?HgO at temperatures as high as 870K.

O alto-forno, primeiro montado de um total de dois fornecidos, foi desenvolvido para conferir à VSB a maior flexibilidade operacional possível sendo capaz, inclusive, de operar com coque ou carvão vegetal, alternadamente. A instrumentação e automação são modernas e avançadas, oferecendo à VSB amplo controle sobre o processo. A presente contribuição técnica visa apresentar as características que tornam o altoforno 2 da VSB um reator especial e o mais moderno em sua categoria.

O comportamento mecânico dos diferentes tipos de materiais é influenciado por diversas variáveis, dentre as quais, as condições adotadas para o processamento mecânico dos mesmos, as características estruturais e os aspectos metalúrgicos, por exemplo. Considerando essas variáveis, este trabalho apresenta o estudo do comportamento mecânico do aço inoxidável ferrítico AISI 430, estabilizado ao nióbio, para diferentes modos de pré-deformação: estampagem (estiramento) e tração com o subsequente carregamento em cisalhamento. Os resultados indicaram que o comportamento mecânico do material variou em função da direção de aplicação do esforço mecânico e do modo usado para a pré-deformação desse aço, ocasionando endurecimento e amaciamento.

Com a redução acentuada do preço do minério de ferro a redução de custos de produção de pelotas se torna ainda mais necessária. Nos fornos das usinas de pelotização é consumido o combustível responsável pelo maior custo de produção das pelotas, que é o gás natural. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo reduzir o consumo de gás natural utilizados nos fornos do tipo grelha móvel das usinas de pelotização, através da otimização dos fluxos de gases e temperaturas necessárias ao processamento térmico das pelotas.

In this research, the thermodynamic study of sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8) solution in the presence and absence of H2SO4 and Fe3(SO4)3 was done. Eh-pH and equilibrium distribution diagrams were constructed using Outotec HSC Chemistry Software and the main stable ionic species were determined. Also, the mean activity coefficient and Pitzer model coefficients were evaluated. Effects of system composition, sodium persulfate concentration and temperature were investigated. According to the results, HS2O7 -, HS2O8 -, S5O3 2-, S4O3 2-, S3O3 2-, HS- and NaSO4 - are the main stable species in these three systems. Increasing of sodium persulfate concentration resulted in disappearing of SO4 2- and the appearance of NaSO4 -. The main effect of increasing the temperature from 25 to 75oC, is changing the stability regions of HS2O7 -, NaSO4 -, SO4 2- and S2-. From equilibrium studies, it was concluded that at 25 and 50oC, increasing the persulfate concentration results in a 55-60% decrease for HS2O7 - and an 20- 30% increase for HS2O8 -. At 75oC, HS2O8 - becomes the main species and its percentage decreases with increasing the persulfate concentration. Keywords: Thermodynamic, sodium persulfate, activity coefficient

Metal-slag phase compositions of molten iron and ilmenite smelting slags or solid titanate phases were determined between 1500° and 1700°C. The influence of oxygen partial pressure and impurity oxide additions including Al2O3, Cr2O3, MgO and SiO2 were investigated along with amount of reductant-carbon. The XRD revealed that the quenched slag crystallized as pseudobrookite (M3O5) solid solution in equilibrium with iron. Silica additions formed separate silicate phases because of its immiscibility in the titanate phase. Under strong reducing conditions iron oxide was almost completely reduced and the slag phase solidified as a consequence thereof. Cr2O3. SiO2 and MnO were also reduced to a high degree. Under weak reducing conditions the slag was fully molten and non of the impurity oxides were reduced. A significant portion of manganese, some magnesia and silicon, in the form of SiO gas, were removed via the gas phase due to their considerable vapour pressures. Alumina was not reduced under the applied conditions. A comparison of the experimental results with industrial data clearly suggested that industrial ilmenite smelting process operated under non-equilibrium conditions.

Geopolímero é um material inorgânico formado por ativação alcalina durante a qual processos de polimerização de alumino-silicatos formam a cadeia polimérica que consiste em tetraedros de Si-O e Al-O. Com o intuito de encontrar subprodutos para serem usados como uma alternativa de aglomerante na formulação do geopolímero, um subproduto oriundo do processamento de rochas ornamentais foi utilizado. O presente estudo consiste na caracterização da capacidade de flexão do material geopolimérico resultante da adição do granito como aglomerante alternativo. Estudos foram elaborados de modo a avaliar ambos o efeito e a viabilidade de seu uso em formulações futuras do geopolímero.
