This report on the electrodeposition of gold and silver from cyanide solutions represents work that has occupied my time at intervals during the past 20 years. The investigation has been carried on simultaneously with my duties as professor of mining and metallurgy of the University of California. During shis long investigation I have been assisted in the details of the work by, a number of my former students, acting in turn as assistants. Particular mention in this connection is due W. H. Hilton, who graduated in 1900; C. T. Dozier, 1902; N. C. Stines, 1905; H. N. Herrick, 1907, and L. C. Uren, 1911. It is impossible to publish full details of the many thousands of experiments performed. Effort has been made to present only the essential data. Wherever possible, the results of the experiments have been expressed in diagrammatic form by curves showing the relation between the simultaneous variables of the experiments. It is necessary to show, as nearly as may be, the state of the art. This is difficult because of the meager literature on electrodeposition in the cyanide process; hence resort must be had to the specifications and claims of patents, most of which seem never to have been applied on a working scale. Such information consequently can not be taken at its face value. Expressing the essential ideas evolved in such specifications is no easy task. Clearly, in quoting from patent records it is not ·feasible to enumerate all of the specifications or the claims allowed the inventors. A statement of the chief contributions to the art in the patent cited must suffice. Legal details, of course, must be obtained from the original patent. In the study of patent literature, when one compares the ardent hopes of the inventors with the results realized from their efforts, it becomes clear that in the development of an art no one man contributes everything. Each subsequent inventor stands on the shoulders of the one who has gone before. It is only through the summation of the contributions of many inventors that the art as a whole prospers. On October 19, 1887, a British patent was granted to McArthur and Forrest for the use of dilute cyanide solutions for treating gold and silver ores. The rapid extension of this process, in various forms, all over the world, has almost revolutionized the treatment of ores containing precious metals. It is a remarkable fact, however, that long before this patent was granted there was issued, on February 5, 1867, to J. H. Rae, U. S. patent 61866, for an electrocyanide process. Thus a method of electrodeposition from cyanide solutions used for treating ores was invented 20 years before the McArthur and Forrest patent .was granted, although the process did not come into general use. On May 24, 1889, U. S. patent 403202 was granted to McArthur and Forrest for the use of zinc shavings for removing gold and silver from cyanide solutions. The use of finely divided zinc is still the standard method for recovering 'gold and silver from cyanide solutions. Since this patent was granted, many attempts have been made to replace the precipitation upon the zinc by methods of electrodeposition. It is the purpose of this report to give an outline of some of these methods, as well as to show the relative advantages and disadvantages of the zinc and the electrical methods of recovering gold and silver from cyanide solutions.

"Molybdenum recovery by solvent extraction has gained interest partly due to advances in concentrate leach technology. Historically, both molybdenum and rhenium have been produced using amine-based extractants with the ability to co-extract both metals. Alternatively, a phosphinic acid-based extractant (CYANEX® 600) can be used depending on the flow sheet. CYANEX® 600 selectively extracts Mo leaving Re in the raffinate, which is a valuable feature in plants which require rejection of the rhenium from the molybdenum circuit. CYANEX® 600 piloting results are reviewed and compared to commercial experiences with an amine-based extractant. INTRODUCTION Molybdenum is most commonly found as molybdenite (MoS2) in primary porphyry deposits (about 59% of global reserves) and copper porphyries (about 39% of molybdenum reserves)[1]. Recovery from molybdenite traditionally involves flotation (concentrates typically containing 85 – 95% MoS2) followed by roasting to produce MoO3. Solvent extraction is also used to recover molybdenum from acidic aqueous solutions resulting from scrubbing of roaster and smelter off gasses and leaching of molybdenite (uranium ores). Molybdenum is also frequently found in low concentrations in copper leach inventories[2]. More recently, pressure oxidation has gained interest to treat molybdenite concentrates. Molybdenum Chemistry The chemistry of molybdenum is complex with a series of extractable species existing dependent on the pH and oxidation state as shown in Figure 1.Under strongly basic conditions, molybdenum primarily exists as MoO42- while under strongly acidic conditions MoO22+ becomes the predominant species. In between, a number of isopolymolybdates such as Mo7O246- and Mo8O264- are dominant. Equations (1) – (3) demonstrate some of the proposed molybdenum equilibrium reactions[1]."

Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas have occurred at various times in several working districts of Metropolitan Colliery, N.S.W.They have occurred in headings only, under both hand and mechanised conditions, and with seam gas ranging from mainly methane to nearly pure carbon dioxide. A modification of inducer shotfiring using a shear cut was introduced in 1955, and in 1961 full face firing both to a machine cut shear and off the solid was introduced. The current series of outbursts -1961 to 1963 - has been induced under these systems with full control of the time of outburst, but without prediction, and with some disappointing production features.Various aspects of current conditions and practices at Metropolitan are considered singular, such as the coarse granulometry of outburst coal, the prevalence of floor heave, the absence of strong structures at outburst sites, the possibility of outburst at any stage in pillar formation up to the last few yards, the effect of rate of advance on outburst occurrence, and the mildness of many outbursts experienced.It is concluded that inducer shotfiring is a reliable control but it suffers by comparison with outburst-free conditions, and that control by preyention would be preferable.INTRODUCTIONThe phenomenon of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas has been described in detail previously (Hargraves, 1958). Briefly, it is a combined gas and stress hazard of deep coal mining, usually occurring in virgin work and during active face advance, when coal and seam gas burst from the face into the workings.Instantaneous outbursts have occurred sporadically at Metropolitan Colliery, N.S.W., since 1895. The industrial importance of the sillimanite group of minerals depends upon the beneficial properties exhibited by porcelains and refractories in which substantial amounts of these minerals are utilized as raw materials. The presence of "sillimanite" (now known to be the closely related mineral, mullite) in conventional porcelains and refractories has been known since before the turn of the century. As early as 1906 German investigators observed a direct correlation between the "sillimanite" content of a porcelain and its electrical and mechanical properties. Acting upon this discovery, U. S. Bureau of Standards investigators during World War I developed improved pyrometer tubes and spark plug porcelains, by increasing substantially the amount of "sillimanite" at the expense of quartz. The success of these experiments, first reported in 1918, at once aroused a lively interest in the location of natural sources of sillimanite and its related minerals. As a result of diligent search, the large andalusite deposits in California were discovered in 1919. Within the next several years large deposits of kyanite and sillimanite in India and kyanite in the United States had been reported. The search for these minerals in quantity, by both private and governmental agencies, has continued unabated during the ensuing forty years. A number of domestic deposits of kyanite have been worked during the past 30 years. Of these, only the Virginian and South Carolinian deposits are currently in substantial production. The only commercial andalusite production in the United States has been in California and Nevada. A dumortierite deposit in Nevada, known since 1917 but ignored for want of a commercial use, began production in 1925. A topaz occurrence in South Carolina has yielded a small production since about 1940. Domestic production of andalusite, dumortierite and topaz had virtually ceased by 1950. There has never been any commercial development of domestic sillimanite deposits. Kyanite has been mined almost continuously in India since about 1922. The remoteness of the large deposits of Indian sillimanite had caused it to be neglected until 1949. In that year sillimanite production began, and it has continued to the present. South African andalusite has been marketed from the 1930's until the present time. From 1944 to 1955 Kenya, British East Africa, was an important producer of kyanite. Commercial deposits of kyanite in Ontario, Canada should soon be in production. The first production of kyanite in Europe began in Austria in 1953. No commercial deposits of mullite are known anywhere in the world. It is of interest to note that synthetic mullite, which as "sillimanite" first elicited interest in the A12O3-rich aluminosilicate refractories, has enjoyed a marked increase in production in recent years. This is a result of the gradual depletion of known deposits of high-quality kyanite and related minerals."' Replacement of an aging twin span river crossing in Vermont required a temporary bridge to accommodate traffic during construction. Soils beneath the temporary approach embankment consisted of very soft organic clayey silt underlain by interbedded, loose alluvial fine sand and silt/clayey silt. Reinforcement was required for the southern temporary approach embankment to limit settlement and to increase global stability factors of safety. A ground improvement design was developed using Rammed Aggregate Pier® reinforcement and was included in the contract documents as an FHWA Category II Experimental Feature. Instrumentation intended to document the performance of the supported embankment was installed. Piers were then constructed and monitoring commenced as embankment and bridge construction occurred. Weekly instrumentation data reports indicated continuing excess pore water pressure, settlement, and lateral deformation of the subgrade soils as the embankment and temporary bridge abutment was constructed. In response to the unanticipated monitoring results, further investigation indicated that significant deviations from the conditions and basis upon which the ground support design was developed were made during construction. This paper discusses these deviations and their specific impacts to embankment support performance, how these deviations occurred, the role that the ground support system played in maintaining global stability, measures taken to limit further detrimental impacts to the embankment, and provides recommendations for contract document preparation and construction oversight to prevent similar situations from occurring on future projects.

Room temperature infrared reflection spectra of 2 n-type homo-epitaxial epifilms have been measured in the work. The effect of the refractive index on the determination of layer thickness using traditional calculation measurement is studied and some improvements have been added to the measurement to improve the accuracy and stability of the measured results. Results of the improved method have great agreement with the results from SEM and both variance and mean relative error decrease an order of magnitude.

The rate of formation of silicon monoxide from silica spheres has been measured at 1500°C in H2, H2-H2O, H2-He, H2-Ar, and CO-CO2 gas mixtures. Indications are that in the hydrogen-containing gases the reaction rate is mainly determined by convective diffz~sion. In the CO-CO2 mixtures the rate approches a constant value which is independent of sphere diometer (and gas velocity). This suggests that a surface reaction becomes rate controlling in CO-CO2 gas. WHENEVER silica is exposed at elevated temperature to a strongly reducing atmosphere there occurs, inevitably, a volatilization of silica by the formation of gaseous silicon monoxide. Because of the importance of this reaction in metallurgical processes and laboratory experiments, its kinetics were studied in the present work. EXPERIMENTAL The spheres made of vitreous silica were suspended by a molybdenum wire in the hot zone of a gas-tight high-purity recrystallized alumina furnace tube of 3.1 cm internal diam and 100 cm length. Molybdenum wire resistance heating was used. A purified H2, H2-H2O, H2-He, H2-Ar, or CO-CO2 gas mixture was passed through the tube, from top to bottom. The amount of silicon monoxide formed was determined by weighing the silica balls before and after the experiments. The silica balls were made from commercially available translucent fused quartz glass. In experiments with hydrogen-containing gases the silica stayed vitreous during the experiment, whereas in experiments with CO-CO2 mixtures, which were performed over longer times, the balls were always crystallized to cristobalite (as determined by X-ray examination) at the surface. Constant-pressure head capillary flowmeters were used to control the composition of H2-He, H2-Ar, and CO-CO2 gas mixtures. The oxygen and water vapor were removed from the gases containing hydrogen by passage through columns containing platinized asbestos (450°C) and an-hydrone. The CO was purified from O2 and CO2 by passing it through activated copper (200°C) and through ascarite. The H2-H2O gas mixtures were prepared by passing purified Hz through a mixture of oxalic acid dihydrate and anhydrous oxalic acid held at a constant temperature in a water bath. The equilibrium water vapor pressures of oxalic acid dihydrate-anhydrous oxalic acid mixtures were taken from the available data.1 The furnace system was checked for sufficient gas tightness at regular intervals. As an additional check, the H2O and CO2 contents were measured in the exit gas and were found to agree closely with the metered contents when H2-H2O or CO-CO2 mixtures were used. When purified H2 was used, H2O pressures found in the exit gas were always below 0.1 mm Hg. These contents originate either from an incomplete reoxidation of silicon monoxide in the cold part of the furnace or from small leaks which cannot be avoided. If the latter is the case, such small uncontrolled H2O contents decrease the partial pressure of SiO in equilibrium with SiO2 by less than about 7 pct, which is considered small in comparison to other experimental uncertainties. The temperature of the furnace was controlled automatically in the usual manner. The reported temperature was measured with a Pl-Pt/l0pct Rh thermocouple and was accurate to ± 5°C. TRANSPORT-CONTROL LED RATE OF REDUCTION The gaseous convective diffusion from the surface of a sphere can be predicted from the semiempirical relationship obtained by Ranz and Marshall2 in a study of the evaporation of water and benzene drops in air. Professor D. Howat (President) was in the chair. At the conclusion of the three technical sessions the Symposium Chairman commented as follows, indicating that he would prepare a written summing up at a later stage: "The tone of the colloquium has had a sincerely practical note about it. It would have been a pity if the ventilation experts talked only theory and little practice. This practical theme has, I am sure, made the colloquium interesting to both ventilation men and others whose daily tasks do not touch so closely on this fascinating subject. This practical theme was in evidence through all the papers and contributions. Some of you may have felt that there was not enough emphasis on the word 'economics' as advertised in the broad title of the colloquium. I do not think this was really a valid criticism because as someone said 'it all boils down to Rands in the end!' So whether it was a case of low fan efficiency, poor design of cooling towers, wrong planning or low human efficiency due to high heat stress. . . it all boils down to money saving and therefore economics, whenever improvements are forthcoming. The title of the colloquium was thus not misplaced. The views of senior mining men on the production side are appreciated. Let us say that this exchange of views between ventilation engineers and those who have to take the final decisions and spend the money, should prove to be most rewarding." Professor Lambrechts finally thanked the Session Chairmen and everybody who had helped to make the colloquium a success and the meeting closed at 4.0 p.m. In a subsequent written summing up, the Colloquium Chairman gave the following as his impressions of some of the highlights which emerged from the papers and discussion thereof: (The names indicate the authors only). Drummond: It was hinted that the time had arrived to consider the introduction of a South African fan test code which would be better suited to local conditions than the currently acknowledged B.S.S. code which, however, is seldom enforceable in practice. In this connection also, there was prominent reference to the thermodynamic approach of McPherson. Wide variations in the quality of maintenance of, and repair work on, fans were stressed. It was mooted that ventilation engineers responsible for estimating the basic duty specifications for large fans, frequently played safe by overestimating the pressure required, thus ensuring that there would not be a shortfall in air volume delivered. This usually meant reduced fan efficiency and it was suggested that decision makers seemed to lay more emphasis on volume of air delivered than on real eco-

"New Gold Inc.’s New Afton concentrator commenced operation in June 2012, producing a copper-gold-silver concentrate. During the first two years of operation, various optimization efforts have improved mill throughput, recoveries and concentrate grade. Daily mill throughput has increased 20% above the design rate. This was achieved through more consistent instantaneous feed rate and size distribution from the mine reclaim stockpile, higher pebble crusher reliability, changes to the SAG and ball mill grinding media sizes, larger SAG grate openings, reduced SAG discharge screen-deck aperture size and an increase in the maximum ball mill power draw limit. Metal recoveries at New Afton are primarily limited by liberation in the coarser size fractions; therefore, improving the grind size at a given mill throughput has been the main means of improving recovery. The average rougher flotation feed F80 size was reduced from 175µm in Q1 2013 to 165µm in Q1 2014, while the average operating mill throughput increased by 25%. Other flotation circuit changes focusing on recovery improvement include the addition of froth crowders to the rougher cells and the use of a stronger frother. The average concentrate grade increased from 22% Cu in Q1 2013 to 25% Cu in Q1 2014. This was achieved by redirecting the flash flotation concentrate stream to the regrind circuit and by the addition of lime to the cleaner circuit.This paper describes the above improvements made at the New Afton mill. The paper describes the objectives, timing and end result of each area of improvement.IntroductionThe New Afton Mine is situated approximately 10km west of Kamloops, British Columbia, 340km north-east of Vancouver. The mine has a moderate climate, access to transportation and electrical infrastructure, nearby fresh water supply, and close proximity to industrial and mining service businesses. The population of Kamloops is around 90,000 with most mine employees living in or around the city."

In the last few decades, many developing countries have tried to expand and improve upon higher education, which is acknowledged to be the leading factor for development. In this respect, develiping countries have significantly increased the number of tertiary institutions and their students. These rapid expansions, along with all the benefits, have drawbacks as well. An example is the status of mining engineering education in Iran. Presently, the number of active mining engineering departments in Iran (27) is more than the sum of similar departments in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and South Africa (23 altogether). Also, the number of annual mining graduates in Iran (645) is more than the cumulative graduates of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia (613). The expansion of mining engineering education in Iran has coincided with the closing or merging of similar mining departments, as well as a decline in the number of interested students in the industrialized world. The present study shows that the need for development and the excessive number of high school graduates, resulting from high population growth in the early 1980s, are the two primary factors influencing the significant expansion of mining engineering education in Iran.

A formação de depósito de carbono é inerente ao processo de coqueificação, com tendência a se acumular nas regiões da zona livre do forno (teto, boca de carregamento e paredes) e no tubo de ascensão dos gases. Contudo, o depósito quando em excesso, se não for removido a tempo, pode causar queda na produtividade, além de impactos ambientais e redução da vida útil da coqueria. Neste contexto, foram avaliados os mecanismos de formação de depósito de carbono, bem como os fatores relacionados ao processo de coqueificação e da mistura de carvões. Foi realizada uma análise estatística dos dados da coqueria, para identificar as principais variáveis que influenciam a formação do depósito de carbono. Em paralelo, foram avaliadas amostras coletadas nas regiões da boca de carregamento, no tubo de ascensão dos gases e do MIQ de alcatrão. Verificou-se que as amostras são formadas por partículas de carbono pirolítico (craqueamento do gás) e majoritariamente pelas partículas carreadas, correspondendo a 60%, 54% e 72%, respectivamente para as regiões da boca de carregamento, da base do tubo de ascensão e superior do tubo. Foram identificadas e sugeridas ações visando minimizar a formação de depósito de carbono, tais como: redução da temperatura da zona livre; aumento da densidade da carga; controle da fração superfina (< 0,105 mm); redução do teor de matéria volátil da mistura de carvões e uso de técnicas de descarbonização.

The purposes of the research were to assess the applicability of new accident investigation methods to mining accidents, and to adapt those found to be applicable in the development of a new methodology for use in mining. The development included field testing, evaluation and modification of the new methodology. The report is in two volumes. Volume one discusses the background research, the design of a methodology for field evaluation, preliminary field tests in Utah mines, and work done to prepare for a formal, complete evaluation by federal government mine safety officials. This, volume 2, discusses the field evaluation done by the contractor and cooperating mines after the program was re-directed by the Bureau of Mines. It relates to research done during a period of approximately eighteen months, ending in April, 1983.

In view of the great interest now taken in the tests of castiron and details of foundry practice, with the number of investigators at work, and recent improvements in the methods of research, it would seem that the time is ripe to attempt the solution of some of the many problems with which iron founders have to contend. Recent papers and discussions on these subjects* have opened up s large field for investigation, and have emphasized the importance of many considerations generally overlooked. With the view of promoting a comprehensive and systematic discussion, I have attempted to tabulate, in conveilient form, some of the most important points for investigation, on the general plan suggested, with such good results, by our former President, H. M. Howe, for the discussion on the Physics of Steel, at the Virginia Beach meeting, last year. This table can, no doubt, be modified or enlarged to advantage, and put in shape to serve as a guide or reminder to all who are interested in this line of work. INTRODUCTION Before a mine is planned in detail, a preliminary analysis is often conducted. This preplanning permits the mining engineer to make a rapid assessment as to whether or not a particular mining property warrants further consideration. In fact, a properly conducted preplanning phase can come within 10% to 20% of the actual results, thereby saving the mining engineer valuable time before committing himself to a fine-tuned analysis. The questions to be answered by mine preplanning are (1) What will be the operating conditions for the mine? and (2) How long will it take to complete the project? To answer these questions, calculations dealing with reserve estimation, production planning, man- power planning, and project scheduling are conducted. The following sections discuss these various phases of mine preplanning in greater detail. RESERVE ESTIMATION The estimation of the various characteristics of a reserve, such as quantity, grade, and thickness, is an ongoing process throughout the life of a mining venture. However, the reserve-estimation phase of mine planning is more closely associated with the preplanning phase. There are many different techniques employed in reserve estimation of solid mineral deposits; variations among them are introduced because of such considerations as ease of application or level of accuracy. In any event, each technique is developed in the following manner: (1) the mineral body is represented pictorially and then subdivided into blocks related to one or more samples of exploration data, (2) the area and volume of each block is determined, (3) the volumes are converted to representative tonnages (or, for example, grades), and (4) the results are tabulated. To illustrate this procedure, the polygonal (area-of- influence) technique will be presented due to its ease of application, flexibility in dealing with different deposits, and general acceptance. The polygonal method assumes that all characteristics of a mineral body extend halfway between a point of observation and any other point of observation. The explored portion of the mineral body is represented by polygonal prisms whose depths relate to the characteristic in question (grade, thickness, etc.) and whose plane bases relate to the area of influence of each point of observation (drill hole, etc.) as shown in Fig. 1. The polygons must be constructed in a definite order, usually clockwise and from the periphery to the center of the deposit. Table 1 can then be used to calculate the characteristics in question. Since, by definition, the polygonal method assumes that the characteristics of a mineral body extend half- way between points of observation, it becomes readily apparent that the evaluation of a vertical-drill hole exploration program requires that the sides of the polygons be formed by the intersection of perpendicular bisectors (Fig. 2). Figs. 3 and 4 show correct and incorrect construction of the polygons. The criterion for correct construction of the polygons is that all points within a particular polygon must be closer to its rallying point than those located in any other polygon. This is clearly not the case for certain points that are located in the polygon containing rallying point B in Fig. 4. Although this method can be used where the drill holes are irregularly spaced, calculations become less tedious when a square net (Fig. 5) or a chessboard (Fig. 6) grid is adopted. The numbers shown in Figs. 5 and 6 represent the relative weight for each of the shaded areas. In general, the greater the number of polygons, the more continuous the mineral body, and the more regular the grid, then the more accurate the computations will be. PRODUCTION PLANNING Before an acceptable evaluation of the production potential of a mine can be determined, a thorough exploration program should be conducted. It seems obvious that the nature and properties of the deposit and adjacent strata, the presence of impurities, and other mining conditions should be adequately determined prior to production planning and equipment selection. The lack of sufficiently detailed knowledge of the many mining parameters has led to the failure of numerous operations. For example, targeted production tonnages and equipment sizes for a coal mine are intimately related to the seam thickness. Needless to say the quality of information that is gathered from an exploration program can have a tremendous impact on the production plan. Although auriferous beach and fore-dune sands at Five Mile Beach south of Okarito township had been intensively mined by hand and primative mechanical methods drilling of the sandspit by the Gold Development Corporation in 1929 indicated that the grade and quantity of undisturbed black and grey sand below the water table was sufficient to support a mining operation. Worked sand above the water table also contained fair prospects. The Okarito Five Mile Beach Gold Dredging Co Ltd, was formed and an hydraulically powered, bucket ladder, sluice box dredge built. In 13 years of operation (1931 - 1943) the dredge returned 556.39 kg (17 890 oz) of gold at a recovered grade of 225.4 mg/m3. A total of ú42 000 was distributed as dividends on the ú30 000 capital investment. Recent drill and bulk sampling at the northern end of the beach has confirmed that reworking of the historic tailings by a modern gravity recovery plant would not be economic.

In mid-1991, the design/build contractor set to work on the Pergau HEP in a remote corner of Malaysia, armed with only a slim volume of conceptual drawings. The next five years saw roads, power lines, buildings, dams, and over 30 kilometers of tunnel constructed, followed by two years of E&M installation and commissioning. Along the way, the project overcame geothermal groundwater, faults, land disputes, monsoon rains, marauding tigers, and those most fearsome of foes, politicians and the press. This paper is a testament to the ingenuity, commitment, and persistence of the construction industry professionals who brought this massive project to fruition.

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of this circular is to describe the sealing off of a mine fire and subsequent use of carbon dioxide gas to extinguish it.A fire of electrical origin occurred in the Valier mine of the Valier Coal Co., Valier, Franklin County, I11., on March 29, 1949, at about 1:35 p.m. It was discovered about 3:35 p.m. in 5 south west intake airway inby 1 and 2 west panels. The No. 5 southwest airway had caved, and the fire was in the top coal beneath a large fall of rock. All men, except officials, were ordered from the mine. The mine officials decided to seal the fire, and four temporary seals were erected, which isolated approximately 200 feet of 5 south west entry. The seals were completed on March 30 at 2:45 a.m., but on March 31, at 3;40 a.m,, two of them were blown out by an explosion of gas that was produced by the fire. The two seals were rebuilt, the work being completed on March 31 at 12:00 noon, but they were blown out by another gas explosion at 12:10 a.m. on April 1. It was then decided to extinguish the fire with water if possible.To accomplish this, concrete-block dams were constructed. On April 1, about 4:25 a.m., when the dams were about half completed, water was introduced into the fire area through a 2-inch pipe.On April 4, J. G, Crawford, general manager of the Valier Coal Co., notified James Westfield, chief of the Vincennes (Ind.) Branch, U. S. Bureau of Mines, by telephone of the fire in Valier mine and requested assistance to combat it. Westfield, accompanied by F. J. Smith and H. C. Brumbaugh, Federal coal-mine inspectors, went underground and inspected the seals and dams. Later, during a conference with company officials, it was decided that the concrete-block dams were not strong enough to withstand the hydrostatic pressure that would be produced by flooding the fire area. It was then decided to use carbon dioxide gas to extinguish the fire. Four seals were completed, and 5 tons of carbon dioxide gas was introduced into the fire area, which extinguished the fire."
