This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Also included are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

Albian Sands Energy is scheduled to begin production at its oilsands operations in the fall of 2002. Start-up includes the selection and implementation of over 75 IT systems or computer applications. These include engineering applications, systems required to control mining activities, maintenance, the processing plant and utilities, and also systems required to run the company, such as human resources, finances and inventory/warehousing. This paper outlines the processes used for the selection, implementation and integration of these systems in order to optimize the use of information and to meet the technical, business and IT requirements of the company. The first step in Albian?s approach to identifying system requirements is the development of a Business Activity Model, outlining all tasks involved in running the operations. The computer applications required to accomplish each task are then identified by having the IT team work closely with each technical and business unit. Historically, at some companies, the selection of systems has been lead by the IT team or by consultants, with little input from the technical or business units. Typically, this results in products that don?t meet the company?s expectations. To ensure a more positive outcome, Albian believes that it is imperative that the company?s technical and business people are closely involved in the selection process. Integration of the IT systems is also key, including linking all applications through a Data Warehouse and EDMS. Over 120 required integrations have been identified. This ensures the storage of all data in only one location, data security, and easy data and document retrieval for all requirements throughout the company.

The problem of removing hydrogen sulphide from natural gas has become within the last few years one of major importance to the natural gas and petroleum industry. Several gas fields in the United States produce natural gas containing hydrogen sulphide, and a number of oil fields produce gas which contains hydrogen sulphide. 3 The percentage of hydrogen sulphide in natural gas produced in these fields varies from a fraction of 1 per cent t6 as high as 20.5 per cent by volume. 4 Hydrogen sulphide is probably the most toxic gas associated with natural gas,5 and from the standpoint of health and safety it is important that the hydrogen sulphide be removed if the gas is to be used for domestic purposes. Hydrogen sulphide, besides being toxic and therefore a hazard to animal life, is under certain conditions an active corrosive agent and very destructive to equipment. 6 The annual loss caused by the corrosive action of hydrogen sulphide on equipment amounts to hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of dollars. 7 The largest percentage of natural gas produced in the United States comes from wells which also produce oil. This associated gas invariably carries with it light fractions of petroleum, which when separated from the gas, condense to the liquid form at ordinary temperatures and pressure. Commercial application is made of this natural condition, and "wet gas" is processed to obtain so-called natural gasoline by employing the principles of absorption, adsorption, or compression and subsequent expansion accompanied by cooling. "Some non-flotation chemicals are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust in other areas of the operations. Since dosage levels are generally not high, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect of a specific chemical on the productivity of the flotation circuit. This paper presents a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5–100 g/t). Results indicate that this protocol helps to predict potential interference by a particular chemistry on the flotation circuit.RÉSUMÉ Certains produits chimiques ne servant pas à la flottation sont ajoutés directement et indirectement aux circuits de flottation afin de contrôler des problèmes tels que l’entartage et la poussière dans d’autres secteurs des opérations. The substantial investment in tunnels anticipated in the next twenty years has focused new attention on the economics of tunnel construction itself and on some costly problems associated with underground work: the uncertain geologic conditions, the performance and adaptability of men and equipment, and the need for quicker, more efficient excavation methods. There also exists a need to develop better ways of estimating tunnel construction. Inaccuracies in current bid estimates stem from a number of causes, among them (1) the effects of geologic conditions, which are not adequately known prior to construction, (2) the dependence of actual cost on the construction method used and on the interactions among the operations occurring underground, and (3) the reliability of tunneling equipment. Inability to estimate final costs for conventional tunneling more accurately has in turn caused difficulty in gauging the costs and benefits attributable to new tunneling technologies either under development or for which R&D programs are planned. ATTRIBUTES OF THE TUNNEL COST MODEL This paper presents a computer based Tunnel Cost Model (TCM) which quantitatively assesses the uncertainties inherent in underground work, and is detailed enough to aid in preparing estimates or bids. To gather additional field data from the western United States, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) installed an array of field instrumentation at a longwall coal mine in Central Utah. The purpose of this field site was to monitor ground movement and changes in pressure during mining where conditions include massive, stiff overburden and relatively deep cover. To accomplish this, field instrumentation was installed in the two-entry gate road between the fifth and sixth longwall panel in the current mining district.

A yield point effect attributed to short-range ordevi?g (SRO) occurs in Cu base Al. At at 296°K varies with heat treatment, decreasing as the annealing ternperature is raised .from 433Oto 598°K. Davies aid Cahn' observed a corresponding decrease in SRO. (523 °K anneal, measured at 77°K) is approximateZy proportional to the variations of A7 with strain rate and testing temperature are also Consistent with the idea that is associated with SRO. A preliminary investigation of the tensile properties of a Cu-Al single crystals showed the presence of a rather strong yield-point effect (drop in flow stress after initial yielding). The object of this research was to investigate its origin and behavior. a Cu-Al alloys are particularly interesting because diffuse X-ray scattering measurements by Davies and Cahn,' Houska and Averbach,' and Borie established the presence of short-range order. The degree of local order may be changed with heat treatment.' cottrel14 suggested that the presence of local order might result in a yield-point effect, and thus the possibility exists here for experimentally ascertaining the importance of short-range order with respect to yield points in these alloys. Since a 12 pct difference exists between the atomic sizes, elastic or Cottrell locking5 must also be considered. Further, Howie and swanne have shown that the stacking fault energy of copper is reduced by aluminum additions. The width of extended dislocations should thereby increase. hus the conditions appear attractive for Suzuki locking.' Finally, the possibility of stress-induced order at dislocations, schoeck locking,' must also be examined, EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys up to 14 at. pct Al were prepared by induction melting high-purity (99.999 pct) Cu and (99.996 pct) Al in a graphite boat under a dynamic vacuum of 5 X 10o mm of Hg. After homogenizing the ingots at 900°C for at least 24 hr under vacuum, they were rolled with intermediate anneals to strips 1.55 mm thick. Single crystals 10 in. long were grown by lowering strips, contained in a split graphite mold sealed in fused quartz at 5 X lo-' mm of Hg, through a single coil induction heater at a constant rate of 1/2 in. per hr. Tensile specimens 1.25 in. long were cut from the single crystal strips and reduced cross sections about 0.7 in. long and 3.0 to 3.5 mm2 in area were introduced by filing and abrading.8 To remove the worked portion about 10 pct of the cross-sectional area was removed by etching. Back-reflection Laue photographs of a filed and etched specimen were taken before and after annealing at 900°c for 24 hr. Small, well defined Laue spots were obtained with no visual difference in the two photographs. Further, specimens with and without the reduced sections began yielding at about the same stress. Hence, for our purposes, filing and abrading did not affect the structure of the specimens. Each single crystal specimen was annealed at 900° c in vacuum for at least 24 hr and furnace cooled; while cooling through the range of 250o to 200°c, the rate was about 55°C per hr. The following report covers the history of the development of the mine, present equipment, methods and costs of mining and milling. In addition, a description of the ore deposit is given with emphasis on the origin of the fractures, mode and types of ore occurrence, and mechanics of granite emplacement. An endeavor has been made to present a complete and accurate statement of the San Mauricio mine, the highest grade gold mine in the Philippine Islands. Credit is gratefully acknowledged to the mine staff for descriptions and details regarding their particular field of work. All analyses were made by Mr. T. A. DeVore, head chemist, San Mauricio Mining Co. Messrs. Edward Wisser, J. E. Fyfe, A. F. Skerl and W. B. Meek, geologists, have contributed geologic information and ideas, for which thanks are extended. The Executive Committee of Marsman and Co., Inc., Managers of the Company, has kindly given permission for publication. Mr. J. B. If I told you tonight at the outset that my prognastications for the future of mine ventilation were imparted to me by a palm reader or inspired by a vision, you'd dismiss what I had to say before I said it! If, on the other hand, I told you that my forecasts were the result of an elaborate computer model, derived from a complex algorithm, which in turn relied on finite element analysis -- and the entire projection confirmed by on-site experiments with a turbo hybrid-flow mine fan -- you'd sit up in anticipation and hang on my every word!! All of which places me in a terrible dilemma, because my predictions really lie somewhere in between. My intent is to talk to you out of my background of forty years in mine ventilation, looking ahead to conditions that I expect to prevail in the next fifteen years. You may be curious why I picked an unlikely time span of 55 years for my overview, and my response is that it bridges a career lifetime. "The last forty", of course, corresponds with the period of my professional employment since graduating with a B.S. and M.S. here at Penn State. "The next fifteen" bridges the period I expect (the Lord willing) to remain professionally active -- and coincidently brings us into the beginning of the 21st century. (I must confess to stacking the deck a bit: Since it's infinitely harder to look ahead than to look behind, I purposely minimized the forecast period and maximized the history! Besides, "forty" and "fifteen" have a nice phonetic ring, perfect 20/20 vision sums to "forty", etc., etc.). With these disclaimers, I'll invite you to join me now in a fast 55-year overview of mine ventilation, of necessity limited to a broad-brush treatment of the subject. (After all, this is an after-dinner talk, not a marathon!) In each- segment, I've selected the seven topics that seem to me of paramount importance: in the first part, seven accomplishments in retrospect, and in the last, seven expectations for the future. (The number "seven" needn't confound you, either: In the bible, it signifies "wholeness" or "completeness".))

A study was carried out which aimed to: determine the effects of blasting on excavation perimeters and nearby slopes; establish a low-cost blast monitoring and field observation programme to determine peak particle velocities and blast damage; and to develop criteria for observable blast damage that are based on the peak particle velocity. Full-scale production blasts in a large open pit copper mine were monitored and studied to develop damage criteria for various rock types. Better blast designs can be achieved by correlating the results of blast monitoring with field observations of damage at the pit walls and on benches. Back-break and damage are related to blast-induced ground vibration. Peak particle velocity is accepted as a reliable measure for the prediction of ground vibration levels. Empirical models for the estimation of rock damage can be developed and used for blast design. The models are used to determine the zones of damage within the rock face. Rock damage models can also be used to design trim shots to achieve further reduction of back-break in more critical areas

"Tensile strength of rock samples is measured by direct and indirect tensile tests in accordance with standard guidelines. Due to the difficulties in performing direct tensile test, the indirect tensile (Brazilian) test is conventionally carried out to obtain the ultimate tensile strength. A limited number of studies have been conducted to investigate the role of sample size (length to diameter ratio = L/D) in the stress distribution of the Brazilian test using numerical and analytical methods. These investigations showed that the tensile stress distribution along the loading diameter is not uniform. They also indicated that the difference between the tensile stress at the middle part and at the sides of the sample with higher L/D ratio is greater than that in the other samples.The objective of this study is to show the effect of tensile stress distribution on the fracture surface created by the Brazilian test from a morphological point of view on the samples with different L/D ratio. Hence, a series of fracture surfaces created using the Brazilian tests on the rock samples with L/D of 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25 and 1.5 were investigated.In this study, all fracture surfaces were scanned by a 3D laser profilommeter. A number of roughness profiles parallel and perpendicular to loading axis have been selected from the samples with different L/D ratio and spacing of 1 mm. The results show that the roughness of the profiles perpendicular to the loading axis increases with an increase of L/D ratio, while the roughness of the profiles parallel to the loading axis decreases. Furthermore, some roughness profiles parallel to the loading axis were chosen and divided into three segments. The results revealed that the segment in adjacent to the upper loading platen possesses higher roughness than the other segments."

Despite modest improvements in the performance of domestic interest rates and gross national product,1 fixed investment in domestic producers' durable equipment continued to weaken during the second quarter of 1982 and declined at a 12.8 percent annual rate compared with the first quarter.2 Large declines occurred during the second quarter in expenditures on many of the major mineral-consuming industries such as aircraft, computers, agricultural and construction machinery and mining and oil field equipment. These data appear to be consistent with the low level of business investment plans for 1982 reported in the DOC's Bureau of Economic Analysis survey of expenditures on new plant and equipment.3 Domestic and foreign industrial production and mineral industry production activities continued to decline in the most recent period because of weak demand conditions (Tables 1 and 2). The U.S. mining production index declined 7.7 percent between April and June as compared with 1.2 percent for total U.S. industrial production (Table 1).

U.S. Bureau of Mines research has found that maintenance of surface mining equipment is involved in slightly more than one-third (34.1 pct) of all surface mining accidents. Two groups of machines, haulage trucks and power shovels, accounted for over one-half of all surface mining mobile equipment maintenance accidents in 1978-84. Maintenance work-time histories for these machines were compared with accident records to identify the most hazardous-to-maintain systems within the machines. Recommendations to reduce the accident risk associated with maintenance of these hazardous systems are presented.

The use of a single tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnel of approximately 12 to 13 m (40 ft to 43 ft) diameter for transit systems to house both light rail or subway tracks in a stacked configuration is an advanced concept that allows significant savings in construction cost and time while reducing, to a large extent, the negative effects on the environment. This solution, similar to the recently completed Barcelona Metro Line 9, integrates station platforms, train storages, crossovers, bypass tracks, ancillary areas and utility corridors inside a single tunnel. Each of the underground stations consist of a cut-and-cover entrance structure and ventilation shafts, that also serve as emergency exits. The excavations for the station structures and shafts can be done on one side of the street with nominal impact on traffic and utilities.

As part of an effort to decrease U.S. dependence on imports of critical and strategic metals, the Bureau of Mines investigated three leaching methods for extracting the base metals and recovering platinum-group metals (PGM) from matte prepared from Stillwater Complex flotation concentrates. Because of a limited supply of natural material, synthetic matte of composition similar to matte prepared from natural concentrates was used to devise the extraction sequences. The validity of the sequences was verified with matte prepared from Stillwater concentrates. In two-stage matte leaching, first-stage H2S04 leaching extracted 99 pct of the nickel and iron from the matte but negligible amounts of copper and PGM. Second-stage oxidative leaching with Fe2(S04)3 or FeC13 solubilized more than 98 pct of the copper and no precious metals. Sequential leaching, in which acid and oxidizing lixiviants were added sequentially to the matte without an intervening filtration step, extracted 99 pct of the Fe, Ni, and Cu. A roasting-leaching technique, in which the residue from first-stage leaching was roasted between 360° and 500° C before a second leaching with H2S04, solubilized 98 pct of the copper. The three leaching methods yielded high-grade PGM residues containing more than 98 pct of the PGM in the matte.

The Ispat Mexicana SA de CV (IMEXSA) pelletising plant is located at Lazaro Cardenas on the west coast of Mexico. It is the primary source of feed stock for the adjacent direct reduction (DR) plants and steelmaking facilities. The initial design of the pellet plant began in 1981 for 3 Mtpa of DR grade pellets using local concentrate received by pipeline.' Several construction delays, an ownership change, and a decision to use imported concentrates delivered in 60 000 to 90 000 tonnes ship cargoes required flowsheet modifications and additions. The design concepts are described for the plant which includes concentrate regrind to final pelletising particle size.

BEEDON AND C. J. JONKER* Dr Bleloch's paper has outlined the advantages of recycling stack-gas of low nitrogen content in the blast furnace. In the first instance it would appear to be extremely beneficial in controlling the hearth temperature and allowing a 100 per cent oxygen-blast to be used. On a second point however we have to disagree. It is claimed that heat is liberated in the combustion zones by the oxidation of CO to CO2 near the tuyeres and in the subsequent reduction of the CO2 by CO. The author has hypothesized as follows, and we quote: 'The C+CO2=2 CO reaction in the outer combustion zone at about 1 700°C is no longer endothermic due to loss of stability of CO2 and its consequent dissociation into CO and free oxygen.' This statement requires closer examination. If we consider the individual events occurring with the CO in the recycled topgas, with the oxygen in the blast and with the coke in the burden, as done by Dr Bleloch, the following heat considerations emerge. All heats of reaction are calculated from the enthalpy values of each reactant and product, as well as the temperature dependence of their molar heat capacities. (a) At the tuyeres: CO+1/2 O2-+CO2 . . . . . (1) CO, CO2 at 500°C; O2 at 25°C. ?H reaction = -65 000 cals/mole CO The reaction (1) is exothermic. (b) In the outer combustion zone: CO2+C?2 CO . . . . . . . . (2) C, CO at 1 700°C; CO2 at 500 0C. ?H reaction = -56 000 cals/mole CO Reaction (2) is endothermic. The overall heat gain of reactions (1) and (2) is ?H=+56 000 - 65 000= -9000 cals/mole CO i.e. the overall reaction is slightly exothermic, the amount of heat liberated is however smaller than suggested by Dr Bleloch. (c) The dissociation CO2+CO+1/2 O2 . . . . . (3) is a highly endothermic reaction at 1 700 0C, requiring 82 000 cals/mole CO2 to proceed to completion. Furthermore, this reaction (3) is energetically not favoured to proceed, as can be observed from the free energy-temperature relationship of figure (3), which favours the formation of CO2 at 1 700 0C. Hence direct dissociation of CO2 at 1 700 0C appears to be unlikely.* The concept of recycling topgas is however still intriguing from many other points of view. Apart from providing a very efficient method of hearth temperature control, it will create a much higher CO partial pressure in the stack.
