This study presents the results of the mineralogical characterization of Ti-Zr ore from the Jiboia deposit, located in the municipality of Brejo Grande, Sergipe State, Brazil. The goal is to identify the main Ti, Zr, and REE carrier phases in the different particle size fractions in order to subsidize the development of a cost-effective processing route for the production of heavy minerals concentrate. The mineral resources are estimated at 31.5Mt @ 3.5% of total heavy minerals (THM) for the Jiboia Ti-Zr deposit, of which 5 Mt @ 3.39% THM were classified as measured and indicated. The mineralogy of the heavy mineral concentrate recalculated to 100% is represented by 22% pseudorutile, 20% ilmenite, 15% zircon, 5% rutile, 2% monazite, and 36% gangue. The ore minerals are preferably concentrated in the 150 × 53-μm granulometric fractions, which represents 80% of the THM and only 27% of the ROM (Run-of-Mine) ore. Therefore, by cutting the ore to 150 μm, it is possible to discard 73% of the ROM mass and recover 80% of the THM, including 100% of the zircon and monazite which are the most valuable minerals present in the heavy mineral concentrate. The global recovery of THM starts to decline rapidly in the fractions finer than 106 μm and the mass disposal (tailing) does not follow in the same proportion. Higher zircon contents in the concentrates of the fractions finer than 150 μm imply a significantly lower recovery of heavy minerals like ilmenite, pseudorutile, and rutile that make the fractions coarser than 150 μm.

Top-down construction (or cut and cover construction) is providing important advantages when comparing with conventional construction techniques for commercial developments with deep basements, underground car parks or near surface infrastructure and traffic tunnels. Main features are substantially reduced restrictions to surface usage, avoidance of intervention with adjacent property, provision of rigid substructures resulting in minimal deforma­tions and settlements and, last but not least, accelerated construction pro­gramme. The present contribution illustrates the construction method in general and elaborates in detail on the special foundation works for a major urban commercial high rise development requiring a six level basement structure.

Deep open-pit mines are becoming increasingly common in the highly mineralized arctic and sub-arctic regions. Air inversion is a frequent occurrence in these regions, and is exacerbated by the natural topography of an open-pit mine. Due to such inversions, the air quality in open-pit mines deteriorates very rapidly. Transport of gaseous pollutants under arctic air inversion is complex and involves an interaction between flow, thermal and convective transport systems. This paper discusses the construction and validation of a three-dimensional model that simulate the flow of air and the transport of gaseous contaminants in an arctic open-pit mine and the effect of low influent velocity and large gust velocities on the contaminants profiles in the mine. It was found that while higher velocities may remove contaminants from the pit bottom, they may not remove the contaminants from the pit entirely, necessitating artificial mitigation measures.

After Nobel invented dynamite, blasts were carried out by trial and error, without the use of equations based on the fundamental principles of Chemistry and Physics, although everyone accepted that shock waves were involved; but no equations were available to calculate their intensity. Around 1950 however, M.A. Cook proposed a procedure to calculate the thermochemistry of an explosive, and thus evaluate theenergy released during the explosion of a fully confined explosive. Some blasters then began to use theEnergy Factor; the latter, however, does not subdivide the energy into its three kinds of activities necessaryfor a successful blast, as demonstrated in 1968 by reference 2, namely i) the shock wave which weakensthe rock; ii) the stress field SS which fully fragments the rock; and iii) the release of the stress SS whichcauses the fully fragmented rock to burst out with the velocity necessary to move the rock into the muckpile. The article explains that the way to achieve a successful blast is by insuring that the explosive energy divides properly into the weakening action of the shock wave which is necessary to prevent large collar blocks and toe, and into adequate stress field intensity SS which is necessary to obtain good fragmentation size distribution at the crusher, as well as adequate burst out rock movement to achieve easy mucking.

The economic advantages of large diameter ball mills can be compromised by unexpected capacity limiting conditions. These arise because media rotational flow to ore axial flow ratios, and the number of mill revolutions that ore is subjected to during residence, are both inversely proportional to mill diameter. Because of this, mixing efficiency and grinding kinetics may decrease and become capacity limiting when mill diameters reach a critical range. There are two possible scale-up problems involved in the design and use of mineral processing machinery: • Selecting the size and operating conditions for available larger equipment, to insure that operating results will match those obtained with smaller units; or •Extending the size ranges of equipment beyond existing limits. Previous research at Columbia University into flotation machine hydrodynamics has demonstrated the importance in scale-up of internal flow relationships; these perform a similar role in grinding (Arbiter and Harris, 1980).

In order to investigate the variation of the load-displacement relations of piles in a site, vertical load tests were carried out on 25 small diameter steel pipe piles. Out of 25 piles, 15 piles were close-ended pipe piles attached with a blade at the pile toe and 10 piles were open-ended pipe piles. To carry out these load tests in a short period, two types of rapid load test methods, Spring hammer load test and Falling mass load test, were employed. The load tests of all piles were completed in two days with 180 blows in total. In order to estimate a static load-displacement of a pile, non-linear damping method was used. It is shown from the test results that the performance of the pipe piles such as the ultimate pile resistance and the initial pile head stiffness is improved by re-driving.

"INTRODUCTION Several mining properties in the Pine Creek area of the Coeur d'Alene mining region of Idaho were examined by engineers 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in 1942. As a result, a broad program of exploration was recommended for the area, particularly in the eastern end, where chances for the discovery of new ore shoots seemed favorable. This report describes the work done and the factual information obtained by the Bureau of lanes.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The xanthate flotation of chrysocolla can be improved by preheating the ore to 500° to 600°C. Addition of water vapor reduces the preheating temperature required. The temperature range of flotation improvement correlates well with the range over which dehydroxylation occurs. This observation is consistent with changes in the structure and properties of the mineral as detected by measurement of solubility, D.T.A., T.G.A., X-ray diffraction, and infrared absorption and with recently proposed explanations of chrysocolla flotation. A brief experiment by one of the authors several years ago showed that exposure of chrysocolla to high temperature water vapor resulted in increased recovery by subsequent xanthate flotation. Recently renewed interest in flotation and thermal properties of chrysocolla1-5 prompted further study of this effect and more detailed reporting.6 This paper explores the response of pure chrysocolla recovery in Hallimond tube flotation tests to the time and temperature of exposure and to changes in the water vapor pressure. Brief attention is paid to the effects of such treatment on accessory minerals. A single experiment with flotation of chrysocolla from an ore is reported. MATERIALS Chysocolla from Inspiration, Gila County, Ariz. was crushed in a porcelain mortar, cleaned of visible and magnetic impurities, and screened to obtain -48 +65 mesh (Tyler) material for flotation test work. The clean material contained 28.5% Cu and was identified as chrysocolla by comparison of X-ray diffraction, D.T.A., and infrared absorption data with that reported for similar materials by others.4,5,7 Samples of malachite and chalcopyrite, prepared in a similar way, were also identified by X-ray diffraction. The sources of these materials are unknown. A sample of chysocolla-bearing oxidized copper ore from Pima, Ariz. was crushed and dry ground for thermal activation and subsequent flotation. PROCEDURES Activation: The apparatus used for exposure of materials to high temperature water vapor is illustrated in Fig. 1. The furnace temperature was controlled to ±5°C Water vapor pressure was controlled by pre-saturating a nitrogen carrier stream with water in an adjustable thermostatted saturator (multiple bubbler). A water manometer and capillary orifice flow meter were used to measure nitrogen flow rates for activation and for subsequent Hallimond tube tests. Gas flow rate and temperature were adjusted prior to introduction of samples. Exposure time was measured from the moment of introduction of the sample to the furnace, hence includes an initial drop below the control temperature. After heating, the samples were removed from the furnace and stored at room temperature in air. Representative samples of activated materials were examined by X-ray diffraction and infrared absorption.

THE slag performs two useful functions. in open-hearth steel-making. First, it is the means of disposal of all the impurities, save carbon, which are removed from the charge materials in refining the steel, so it must be suited to receiving and retaining as much as possible of undesirable elements with minimum loss of iron and useful alloying elements. Second, the slag serves as a buffer between the flame and the bath and transfers oxygen to the metal at a measured pace contrasted with the violent and difficultly controlled oxidation of the bessemer process. At the same time, the slag is a thermal insulator that limits the rate at which heat can be delivered to the metal from the flame, and a heavy slag blanket thereby serves as a brake on production rates. It has been said with justification that the secret of good steel- making is to make a good slag and the steel will take care of itself. In a broad sense, the subject of slag control includes not only the adjustment of the composition of the slag but also of its relative weight in terms of percentage of the metal-bath weight. The slag is made up essentially of: (1) oxides formed by oxidation of silicon, manganese, phosphorus, and iron in the charge, (2) SO2, MnO, MgO, and other oxides charged as such or introduced incidentally with ores or fluxes or by refractory erosion, and (3) lime charged or fed to the heat to neutralize the "acidic" oxides present (SiO2 and P2O5). Obviously, if practically perfect control were possible over the composition of the charge as well as over the oxidation process during the melting period, both slag weight and composition would be very nearly predetermined, and the control problem would be solved. Unfortunately, only a somewhat imperfect control over these factors is possible, so the operator must begin during the lime boil and continue through the refining period to discover and correct departures from the normal pattern of slag development. The use of high vacuum on a large industrial scale in the ferrosilicon process for the production of magnesium marks the coming of age of an important new metallurgical technique. The economical production of reactive metals, such as magnesium, which combine with all the well-known furnace atmospheres, has until recently been successfully carried out only by electrolytic methods. It is now apparent that, through the use of high vacuum, the distillation or sublimation of many metals can be done industrially at much lower temperatures, and hence in much simpler equipment, than heretofore has been thought possible. At the beginning of the present emergency, when the ferrosilicon process of producing magnesium was brought to the fore, little was generally known about vacuum engineering, practices, and techniques. In a comparatively short time, the available equipment has been adapted, new equipment designed and built, and a fund of know-how evolved to make possible the production of thousands of pounds of magnesium per day at pressures less than 1/ r0,000 of an atmosphere. Pilot-plant operations have been consistently maintained at pressures even as low 2s one micron (0.001 mm.). These low pressures, which previously were regarded as prohibitively costly or impossible to attain, have been demonstrated as economically feasible on an industrial scale. Necessity for Vacuum The main function of vacuum in the ferrosilicon process, and hence in most vacuum smelting processes, is to lower the temperature at which the metal may be distilled or sublimed from the reduction mixture. A secondary function is to protect the distilled metal from attack by the furnace atmosphere and to permit the formation of a dense condensate. In the ferrosilicon process, magnesium is formed by the reaction between dolomite and ferrosilicon: 2(Mg0-Ca0) -\- HFeSU / t=> aMg + MFe + (CaO)2-SiO2 The metal is distilled from the pelleted charge at a free air pressure of about 0.100 mm. of mercury (100 microns). This low pressure is not needed for the reaction, but rather serves to protect the metal vapor from the oxygen or nitrogen of the atmosphere and permits the formation of a condensate free of pyrophoric material. The reaction proceeds at air pressures as high as several millimeters of mercury, and evidence has been offered to show that the actual equilibrium pressure of magnesium at operating temperatures of 2I50°F. is somewhat higher. Zincite and spinel phases are present in the complex slag systems encountered in zinc/lead sintering and zinc smelting processes. These phases form extensive solid solutions and are stable over a wide range of compositions, temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. Accurate information on the stability of these phases is required in order to develop thermodynamic models of these slag systems. Phase equilibria in the Fe-Zn-O system have been experimentally studied for a range of conditions, between 900 and 1580°C and oxygen partial pressures (pO2) between air and metallic iron saturation, using equilibration and quenching techniques. The compositions of the phases were measured using Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The ferrous and ferric bulk iron concentrations were determined using a specially developed wet-chemical analysis procedure based on the use of ammonium metavanadate. XRD was used to confirm phase identification. A procedure was developed to overcome the problems associated with evaporation of zinc at lowpO2s and to ensure the achievement of equilibria. An isothermal section of the system FeO-Fe2O3-ZnO at high ZnO concentrations at 1200°C was constructed. The maximum solubilities of iron and zinc in zincite and spinel phases in equilibrium were determined at pO2=1*10-6atm at 1200and 1300°C. The morphology of the zincite crystals sharply changes in air between 1200 and 1300°C from rounded to plate-like. This is shown to be associated with significant increase in total iron concentration, the additional iron being principally in the form of ferric iron. Calculations performed by Fact Sage with a thermodynamically optimized database have been compared with the experimental results. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted a series of laboratory tests to investigate the effectiveness of using a flooded-bed scrubber with exhaust ventilation in deep-cut faces of up to 12.2 m in length. An experimental test program to determine the impact on respirable dust levels resulting from changes in face airflow, curtain setback distance, operator positioning, and operating parameters of the external spray system on the miner was completed. Gravimetric sampling was conducted in the immediate return and at three sampling locations on the off-curtain side of the entry. Statistically significant differences in dust levels on the order of 0.5 to 1.2 mg/m3 were observed between specific sampling locations and changes in several test parameters. Dust sampling results indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber and exhaust ventilation can be a viable dust control system for extracting deep cuts up to 12.2 m in length. The impact on methane was not evaluated.

In this study, the cyclonic static microbubble flotation column (FCSMC) was investigated for fluorite beneficiation. The structure and principle of the specially designed column are described. Fluorite samples from the tungsten separation tailings of the Shizhuyuan Mine, Chenzhou, Hunan Province, P.R. China, were tested using a small-scale continuous flotation test unit, and concentrates with a fluorite grade higher than 98% were obtained. One rougher and three cleaner stages in the FCSMC achieved the same separation performance as one rougher and eight cleaners in conventional flotation cells. This greatly simplified the flotation circuit and reduced operating costs.

The nucleation process for y', Ni3Ti, is shou'n to change from heterogeneous to uniform as the undercooling within the phase boundary increases. As unifornz nucleation beconres copious, (100) alignment is observed in the early stages of aging; howecer. whether or not the alignment is due to spinodal decomposition could not be determined. The presence oi a large-scale reversible segregation of titanium and not the intermediate precipitate y' may be the cause of the initial strengthening in this alloy system and the discrete regions detected magnetically by Ben-Israel and Fine. Evidence is presented for the role of dislocations in the formation at long aging tines oJ the equilibrium precipitate . ThE nickel-rich portion of the Ni-Ti phase diagram consists of a terminal fcc solid solution of titanium in nickel called y.' For temperatures below 1290°C if the solubility limit is exceeded and the temperature is high enough, the excess titanium will combine with nickel to form q, Ni3Ti, a four-layer hcp ordered structure with stacking sequence ABAC."~ Since a change in structure is involved, formation of q is slow and a metastable precipitate referred to as y' forms. This metastable precipitate is an ordered cubic phase in the unconstrained state having a structure similar to Cu3Au (LIZ) with the composition Ni,Ti."'5 From X-ray studies,8, 7 the following sequence is indicated for the precipitation reaction at low temperatures: 1) The appearance of satellites around low-index diffraction spots and splitting of high-index spots, indicating the formation of a slightly tetragonal phase in an imperfectly periodic arrangement. The tetragonal phase is y' or the depleted matrix, depending on the volume fractions of matrix and precipitate (and hence, the alloy composition); tetragonality apparently arises from coherency strains. 2) The appearance of diffraction spots from the equilibrium second phase, q. Ben-Israel and Fine'" used magnetic methods to measure the changes in matrix composition during aging, and to estimate the precipitate composition in a Ni-10.1 at. pct Ti alloy. They observed that the alloy, solution-treated at 1270°C and quenched, contained heterogeneities with discrete compositions which gradually vanished upon aging. It was suggested that y' may initially form as a defect structure with several possible compositions deficient in titanium as compared to Ni3Ti; the composition Ni3Ti develops with prolonged aging. The initial composition was Ni6Ti which would require a very large deviation in stoichiometry for y'. It was noted that at 700°C the precipitation reaction was 80 pct complete after 2 hr and that the volume fraction of second phase was 0.2 after 1 hr. Mihalisin and Decker' suggested that the equilibrium precipitate, besides being nucleated at grain boundaries, could also form at stacking faults. ~errick" examined the formation of in Ni-Cr-Ti, and suggested that a collapsed vacancy cluster within y' acted as a nucleus for intragranular q at high temperatures, 820" and 900°C. After long aging times at lower temperatures, 650" and 750°C, diffraction patterns taken from regions containing ribbons of stacking faults showed spots associated with q. Aging greatly enhances the mechanical properties of these alloys, even at high temperatures, and the metastable precipitate y' is thought to be responsible.' At 600°C the hardness of a Ni-10.1 at. pct Ti alloy increases rapidly during the first 20 hr of aging and continues to increase slowly thereafter.'" At 700°C the hardness reaches a maximum at 1 to 2 hr and then decreases.l1 In this paper the kinetics of formation of y' and the mechanism of transformation to in a Ni-Ti alloy are described. Evidence is presented that suggests that large-scale regions of titanium segregation are present initially and these may have an important influence on the initial strengthening of the alloy: these regions may be the heterogeneities detected by Ben-Israel and Fine. I) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The Ni-10.3 at. pct Ti-0.6 at. pct A1 alloy was prepared by vacuum melting. Its chemical analysis is given in Table I. A 0.007-in.-thick strip was sandwiched between foils of the alloy and placed in an open Vycor tube with titanium chips (to get oxygen) and solution-treated for ; hr at 1150°C in a Globar Furnace under a flowing argon atmosphere. Following a quench into an ice-brine mixture at -5" to -2"C, a sample to be aged at temperatures up to and including 700°C was sealed in an evacuated Vycor capsule before being put into a fused salt bath. Aging above 700°C was carried out on bare samples in a salt bath. For stockpile design, the flowability and structural interfaces are critically dependant on the stress conditions throughout the pile. Historically, the predictive methodologies for stress determination have been too conservative, which adds inefficiency to the stockpile reclaim interface selections, especially for live reclaim stockpile systems. In addition, accurate pressure profiling throughout stockpile is essential to correctly design the stockpile support structures, which are buried within the stockpile. Such buried structures include trestle legs or columns to support load-out conveyors or the roof of bulk storage sheds. Improved methodologies with respect to the development of the hoop stress condition which exists in material ædrawn-downÆ within the stockpile has been developed. This hoop stress approach has significantly improved the live capacity prediction to over 90 per cent accuracy and improved rathole structure prediction within live reclaim stockpiles. Additionally the methodologies in estimating the vertical and circumferential stress variation acting on buried stockpile structures have been significantly progressed, with experimental testing shown good agreement with the theory.CITATION:Williams, K C, Roberts, A W and Prigge, J D, 2013. Integrating seismic reflection, borehole geophysical, and physical rock property studies is an effective means of mapping lithological contacts and structures in the crystalline crust. At Les Mines Selbaie in the northern volcanic zone of the Late Archean Abitibi Subprovince, a high-frequency seismic reflection profile has provided the first images of deep crustal structures of this important polymetallic mine site. Physical rock property and borehole geophysical studies confirm that prominent seismic reflections can be caused by lithological contacts, faults and sulphide mineralization. At Les Mines Selbaie, the first two of these are shown by this study. Clearly identifiable reflection images from sulphide mineralization have not been demonstrated in analysis of the profile. The seismic images provide useful information about gross structure in the vicinity of Les Mines Selbaie. They can also place important constraints on the sequence of tectonic events and, therefore, can aid future deep exploration programs.

The efficiency of water sprays in suppressing airborne colliery dust depends on many variable factors. A survey of previous work in this field shows that swirl spray nozzles are the best dust suppressors.Investigations carried out in an experimental dust chamber show that, in spite of limitations to the application of water sprays in underground use, promising dust suppression efficiencies in mechanised mining can be obtained with swirl spray nozzles.INTRODUCTIONA dust hazard has always been associated with coal mining, and the recent growth of mechanisation has resulted in a greater production of fine coal and dust, thus increasing the hazard. A better knowledge and appreciation of the medical aspects and dust explosion factors has led to practices reducing the seriousness of the problem. However, the dust hazard still exists and its control is basically an engineering problem.Dust, as with any atmospheric pollution, may be removed from the, mine by ventilation, which is an indirect method of control. Direct methods, in which the dust is prevented from being produced and from becoming airborne, should be employed where possible. Of these direct methods the most significant is the use of water sprays.THE DUST HAZARDAn appreciation of the physical nature of the more important dust hazards is necessary before considering the removal of the hazard. The main hazards associated with colliery dusts are the health hazard and the explosion hazard. "Dust" comprises solid particles of size minus 20 mesh Tyler (833 microns).

The extension of the commuter railway system (S-Bahn) in Leipzig, Germany willrequire the construction of an underground line crossing the downtown area of thecity to tie the Bavarian Station in the South to the Main-Station in the North. The City-Tunnel-Leipzig is currently one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe. This system extension will have a length of approximately five kilometers. 3.9 kilometers of that length are currently being constructed using either cut & cover construction or tunnelingmethods. The design and construction of this project currently is and will continue facing very significant challenging urban and demanding geotechnical conditions.

The Fankou Mine in Guangdong province, China, processes a polymetallic ore containing averagely 4.2% Pb, 8.5% Zn, and 90 g/t Ag. The main metal minerals including sphalerite, galena and pyrite are very finely disseminated and unevenly occurred in the ore, making it difficult to liberate them from each other. This paper presents the processing technology of the Fankou plant and the characteristic features of the novel technology applied.
