INTRODUCTION Coal gold agglomeration (CGA) is a new concept in gold processing. It involves the recovery of oleophilic (oil-loving) gold grains by causing them to adhere selectively to the surfaces of coal oil agglomerates. Under optimum conditions very high recoveries of gold. can be achieved. The agglomerates are recycled to build up gold loading to typically 1000 - 5000 g/tonne. Bullion can be produced by burning the loaded agglomerates with subsequent recovery of gold from the highly loaded ash either by dissolution/electrowinning or smelting. A wide-ranging programme of laboratory testwork has been performed to investigate the response of different ore types to the process. This has shown CGA to be most applicable to ores in which the gold is liberated or easily liberatable, relatively coarse (ca 500 µm) and fine (<5 µm) gold grains being recoverable with equal ease. The best opportunities for CGA seem to be: • placers containing fine gold not recoverable by gravity concentration • low grade gravity concentrates to avoid multiple magnetic/gravity separation stages and amalgamation • free milling ores where the gold can be liberated at a reasonable ore particle size eg >d80 50 µm • tailings past or present from gravity concentration plants. CGA testwork ranging in scale from laboratory to pilot plant on tailings produced by gravity concentration in the 19th century Australian gold rush has already been reported (Bonney, C F, 1988; House, C I, Townsend, I C and Veal, C J, 1988). An economic appraisal for a Canadian free milling gold ore has also been published (Buckley, S A, House, C I and Townsend, I G, 1989). This paper describes results of a detailed laboratory programme to assess CGA as a means of recovering gold from a beach sand deposit in New Zealand. The area from which the samples were taken consists of quarternary interglacial marine, lagoonal, fluvial and eolian deposits. The heavy minerals present are predominantly ilmenite and garnet and small concentrations of gold. In certain locations the sands and gravels are consolidated by a limonitic cement. In the 19th Century some parts of the deposit were mined and the ore processed using stamp milling and gravity concentration. Gold recoveries were low, probably below 50%, due primarily to the fine size of the gold grains, the flaky nature of the gold and also imperfect liberation by the stamp mills. Our laboratory testwork was divided into three parts: i) Preliminary studies on an initial sample to assess the feasibility of treating the ore by CGA ii) Extended studies on further samples from various locations in the deposit to confirm predictions from (i) iii) Conventional gold recovery techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All CGA tests were performed by agitating a slurry of ore in water in a 0.6 dm3 pyrex beaker fitted with four vertical baffles. When required, potassium amyl xanthate collector was added and the slurry conditioned for 5 min. Coal (ex BP Coal Australia&apos;s Tahmoor Colliery) previously ground to a d80 50 µm was added followed by a commercial grade of gas oil (density 840 kg/m3). The agglomeration time was 30 min. The agglomerates were separated from the tailings by screening, both were then dried and analysed for gold by fire assay. This test procedure provides a reasonably accurate estimate of gold recoveries that might be expected from our 1 tph pilot plant. This document is a users manual intended as a reference for personnel interested in the analysis of coal-mine-electrical-power systems under either normal operating conditions or fault situations. The interactive procedures developed for this purpose are described and implementation considerations are discussed with respect to the mine-power system. Considerations for choosing a solution technique and a number of examples are included. Procedures available include Gauss-Seidel and Newton-Raphson iterative techniques for the analysis of normal operation or balanced faults as well as a non-iterative Z-bus technique for analysis of unbalanced or balanced faults.

Many buildings in Boston are founded on untreated wood piles, which can deteriorate and lose their structural capacity if groundwater levels are lowered below the tops of the piles, exposing the wood to air in the unsaturated soils that surround the piles. The problem of wood pile deterioration due to lowered groundwater levels in Boston first became evident in 1929 following discovery of rotten piles beneath walls of the Boston Public Library building. Repairs to reconstruct the library building?s wood pile foundations were made in 1930 using pit underpinning methods. Today, more than 80 years later, the subsurface conditions beneath several of Boston?s historic neighborhood areas continue to be plagued with low groundwater levels - regrettably resulting in ongoing deterioration to the wood piles that support some of Boston?s oldest and most beautiful buildings. Pit underpinning is still recognized as the preferred approach to repair wood piles and restore uniform foundation support beneath the impacted buildings. This paper provides a brief historical review of the land filling in Boston through the early 1900s that led to the use of wood piles as building foundations. Also discussed is the impact that groundwater level can have on the long term performance of wood pile foundations and the pit underpinning procedures used to reconstruct decayed wood pile foundations in 1930 beneath the Boston Public Library, and today beneath some of Boston?s oldest buildings. Also included are discussions on engineering controls and permitting requirements that help ensure safety and protection to the workers and buildings during underpinning, and some procedures being used to supplement and improve the loading capacity of the reconstructed foundations and facilitate construction of new useable below-grade space.

Finely ground beryl was decomposed by mixing with ground limestone and soda ash and heating at 900&#176;C for 4-6 hr. The sintered mater:al was then crushed and leached by boiling under reflux with 5N sulphuric acid for up to 4 hr. The liquor containing Be, AI, Fe and other elements as sulphates, was separated from the residue which consisted mainly of silica and gypsum, either by filtration or bydecantation washing.The clarified leach liquor was first treated to remove Fe+++ by contacting with a primary amine-kerosene solution in 2 countercurrent stages. The iron free liquor was then passed to a 4-stage counter-current extraction unit where it was contacted with O&#183;5M di- (2 ethyl hexyl) phosphoric acid (EHPA) in kerosene. Under the operating conditions, 99 per cent of the Be and 7 per cent of the Al was extracted.The Be and Al were stripped from the organic phase by sodium hydroxide solution of suitable concentration to form soluble &quot;beryllate&quot; and &quot;aluminate&quot; respectively. Most of the Be was subsequently precipitatedas Be(OH)2 by heating the alkaline solution to 90&#176;C, the Al remaining in solution. After filtration and washing, the Be(OH)2 could be ignited directly to BeO at about 1000&#176;C or used as a feed to further purification stages if required.A small counter-current extraction unit was operated continuously using liquor derived from the sintering and leaching stages. Dataobtained in batch laboratory tests were confirmed. A product obtained by ignition of the washed &quot;beryllate&quot; precipitate contained more than 99 per cent BeO.INTRODUCTIONIn 1958 an investigation was commenced into the recovery of beryllium oxide from beryl, as part of a programme to utilize mineral resources of South Australia. Unplanned stope panel collapses occur on most near-surface and shallow mines in South Africa. Although these incidents often occur during blasting, they pose a major threat to the safety of underground workers and the economic extraction of orebodies. Most stope panel collapses occur due to excessive panel lengths (resulting in excessive stope spans) that are not designed according to a systematic design procedure or methodology. Instead, panel lengths are often dictated by the equipment in use and by previous experience under similar conditions. Hence, a rock engineering design methodology for the design of stable stope panels between pillars is of vital importance for optimum safety and production in shallow mining operations. Using the proposed design methodology described in this paper, rock mechanics practitioners and mine planners should be able to identify and quantify the critical factors influencing the stability of stope panels. The critical factors should then be used as input to the design of stable stope panels that will provide the necessary safe environment for underground personnel working in stopes. The proposed design methodology is an iterative process, which includes aspects such as rock mass characterization, estimation of rock mass properties, identification of potential failure modes, consideration of appropriate stability analyses and other elements of the rock engineering design process. This process continues after implementation. During monitoring, new data should be included in the database and the design process repeated on a regular basis. Design approaches included in the proposed design methodology include empirical methods such as different rock mass classification methods, analytical methods such as elastic and Voussoir beam analyses, kinematic analyses, probabilistic analyses, and numerical analyses. The emergence of Impact and Benefit Agreements (IBAs) in the Canadian mining sector has been read by many as a positive governance innovation. Negotiated directly between mineral resource developers and Aboriginal communities with limited government interference, IBAs serve to manage impacts associated with a mining project and deliver tangible benefits to local communities. Notwithstanding their increasing use and significance, limited systematic analysis has been undertaken to determine whether they are, in fact, working. This paper reports on the effectiveness of a number of IBAs negotiated in support of three northern Canadian diamond mines, drawing on evidence from time-series data, key informant interviews, and focus group meetings in Yellowknife and Dettah, NWT, and Kugluktuk, NU. While some deficiencies were apparent and perceptions of effectiveness varied somewhat by Aboriginal community, the IBAs were generally found to be meeting their objectives, especially with respect to the delivery of benefits. For Aboriginal communities affected by mineral development in the Canadian North, this represents a significant change to typical outcomes of the past. Moving forward, research on IBA effectiveness needs to adopt a longer timeframe and begin to gauge the degree to which IBAs are able to address long-standing concerns associated with hinterland resource extraction beyond their agreement-specific objectives.

Solids suspension influences the quality of mixing and energy requirement in a solid-liquid system, both of which determine the efficiency of industrial processes such as nickel precipitation. Nickel solids concentration distribution in a stirred tank was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental methods. The concentration distribution of the nickel solids was compared with that of sand and glass. The laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) method was used to measure the velocity field for the liquid-only system and an optical technique was employed to determine the axial solids concentration distribution. Regions of in homogeneity in the tank were identified. It was found that, for a given solids loading, the solids concentration distribution depended on both particle size and particle size distribution. High solids loadings were investigated and a difference in the concentration distribution pattern was obtained with nickel, flint glass and sand particles. The CFD simulation results highlighted problems that could be associated with some conventional experimental methods of determining solids concentration distribution in a stirred tank. Refractory gold ores have been the subject of intensive metallurgical study in order to achieve more efficient recovery of contained values and at the same time to minimise environmental impact. Considerable innovative gold processing technology was introduced in New Zealand last century, the most notable being the first successful commercialisation of the cyanidation process by the Crown Mines Company at Karangahake in 1889. The Karangahake gold-silver deposit was second only +to the Waihi Martha mine in total bullion production from the region with active mining from 1882 until about 1920 and sporadic production between 1930 and 1944. Reevaluation at Karangahake with associated metallurgical testing has continued since that time becoming particularly active in the last decade as a result of increasing gold prices. Gold processing technology is reviewed and results of some recent test work are presented and discussed in the context of Karangahake history and future development possibilities. This work confirms the variability and complexity of the Karangahake deposit both mineralogically and metallurgically and suggests flotation followed by new and innovative smelting is the most appropriate processing route for the recovery of gold from the high grade ore which could be produced from the Karangahake workings in moderate tonnages.

"GENERAL STATEMENTThe purpose of this report, which is the first of a series of three covering mines in the Fairmont district of West Virginia, is to give the result of a' study conducted in seal mines to ascertain the nature of the safeguards employed to prevent injury to the workmen from falls of roof and coal. In presenting the subject matter, consideration must necessarily be given to factors, features, and conditions such as method of mining, timber regulations and practices, supervision and natural conditions; and, for comparative purposes, a certain amount of statistical matter bearing upon the relation of fatalities and injuries to their causes, tonnage produced, men employed, days worked, and time lost.Those features and practices found to promote safe protection are summarized and suggestions made for such additional safeguards and practices as appear to give greater protection against injury from falls of roof or coal.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis study of falls of roof and coal in mines in Harrison County has been conducted by the U. Proper analysis of washabiity data can lead to the development of a maximum yield coal preparation plant flow sheet. Simulations, as simple as spreadsheet mass and water balancing, are important in examining yield maximization and middlings liberation. Key to such attribute tracking flow sheet simulations is the distribution model, expressing the probability of a species reporting to the product stream. There are many such models in the literature. This paper examines a functional form that can represent or fit most of the proposed distribution functions.

ORDERING reactions of Fe-Si compositions in the a region have been mentioned in a number of review articles.7-8 However, little is known in regard to the critical temperature, T at which this transformation takes place. Greiner and Stoughton,&apos; in a study of the constitution of iron-rich Fe-Si alloys below 800°C, placed the onset of order at a composition of about 4 to 5 wt pct (7.5 to 9.5 atomic pct) Si. They observed that at this composition the ductility and strength begin to decrease sharply and brittleness develops. During X-ray studies they observed only the appearance of superlattice lines for compositions containing 12.5 atomic pct Si. More recent X-ray diffraction studies- etected the appearance of superstructure lines (corresponding to the calculated positions of [Ill] and [ZOO] reflections) for alloys containing 9.5 atomic pct. This fact confirms Greiner and Stoughton&apos;s original hypothesis in regard to the onset of order at compositions containing about 7.5 to 9.5 atomic pct Si. The physical properties.of Fe-Si alloys containing more than 10 atomic pct Si have been studied only to a limited extent. Their extreme brittleness and difficulties of sample preparation render them of little industrial use in comparison with alloys in the 0 to 10 atomic pct Si range. The properties of Fe-Si alloys reported to date are mostly properties measured at room temperature on ordered compositions It appears that because of experimental difficulties fully disordered alloys could not be produced in the critical composition ranges and their properties could therefore not be reported. In Figs. la, lb, and lc, a summary of physical properties of Fe-Si alloys, measured during recent investigations of the influence of silicon additions to iron, is presented. No mention of determination of the critical temperature, T for disorder could be found in the literature. The following is an account of work done in an attempt to: 1) produce the disordered state of various Fe-Si alloys and establish the critical temperature, T for disordering, and 2) compare the electrical and thermal conductivity characteristics of the ordered and disordered phases as functions of composition. Materials, Preparation of Test Samples, and Testing Methods Fe-Si alloys with high silicon contents (about 10 atomic pct) are usually prepared using powder metallurgy techniques. This method insures accurate compositions and high purity through the use of protective atmospheres during solid state diffusion alloying of the mixed powders."" Iron and silicon powders were mixed in the desired proportions, cold or hot pressed, and then homogenized at 1150°C for periods ranging from 6 to 12 hr under a protective getter and in a hydrogen atmosphere. Fully homogenized samples were quenched in water from various and successively higher temperatures to establish the critical temperature for disorder. Temperatures were determined using Pt—Pt-Rh thermocouples in contact with the test samples. Test bars were approximately 0.6x1.25x7.5 cm. Electrical measurements were made at room temperature by determining the potential drop over a 1.5 cm span for a current of 10 amp. Densities of the samples were determined by immersion. "SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONSTests conducted at Mount Weather indicate that clear water is the best bit coolant and cuttings-removal medium for diamond drilling. All of the mediums tested did show that drilling speed increased when drilling with the faster feed ratios (greatest pressure on the bits). In no case, how¬ever, did the increased drilling speed amount to over 16 percent, and even in a long hole the slight increase in drilling speed would be more than offset by the extra time consumed in setting up.Bit wear was excessive when lubricating agents were used, the most footage per bit was obtained when drilling with clear water in the normal manner, and the next best footage was obtained when drilling with circulated water containing no lubricating agent. The diamonds showed little or no wear in any of the bits, and all bits cut well throughout the tests. They were only taken out of service when erosion of the cast metal had progressed to the point where the diamonds were about to roll out. The lubricating agents evidently hold some of the cuttings in suspension, which in turn help to cut the rock but also wear the metal of the bit.No hard-matrix bits were tested, and it is possible that one or more of the lubricating agents might increase the efficiency of such a bit by keeping it sharp and doing away with the necessity of sharpening by sand blasting. Some tests are planned with hard-matrix-type bits and the same lubricating agents used in the tests under discussion, but it is realized that any drilling advantage gained by the bits sharpening themselves may but at least partly offset by excessive wear of the Pump parts."

In the present work an attempt has been made to study beneficiation of low-grade iron ore associated with manganese clay by selective flocculation. The representative samples obtained for this purpose were initially subjected to chemical and mineralogical studies. The chemical analyses indicated 42.56 % Fe, 6.25% Mn, 8.72 % SiO2 and 13.60 % Al2O3 in the representative sample. The mineralogical analyses carried out under optical microscope showed that the ore mineral predominantly comprised of iron oxides and hydroxides along with manganese and silicate as gangue minerals. Prior to the beneficiation studies, the samples were subjected to settling tests. These tests were carried out by using poly acrylic acid (paa), poly acryl amide (pam) and guar gum (gg) as the flocculants. From these studies it was observed that settling rate of particles increases with increase in pH and a maximum settling rate of 0.23 cm/secwas obtained at pH 9 in presence of poly acryl amide. Further, the samples were subjected to selective flocculation studies using above-mentioned reagents. From these studies better results were obtained in the experiments carried out with poly acryl amide as the flocculant. Thus, it was possible to upgrade the iron content from 42.5 to 53%, with a recovery of 92%. However, 51% Fe with recovery of 87% and 50% Fe with recovery of 94 % was obtained using poly acrylic acid and guar gum respectively.

Laboratory scale equipment was developed to recover zinc as oxide fume from granulated lead blast furnace slag. The cyclone furnace process is characterised by high treatment rates combined with continuous and independent operation.Results were sufficiently encouraging to warrant pilot plant scale trials being undertaken.INTRODUCTIONSince granulation of lead blast furnace slag started at Port Pirie in 1921 the stockpile of this material has increased to nearly 5 million tons which averages 17&#183;5 per cent zinc by weight. Although a number of processes for recovering the zinc have been examined, economic considerations indicate that a slag fuming process is likely to be most suitable.In the conventional slag fuming process zinc is extracted by injecting pulverized coal and air into a molten slag bath. By maintaining a suitable air to coal ratio the oxidised zinc contained in the slag is reduced to metal. Volatilization of the zinc is followed by reoxidation in the gaseous phase with the addition of further air above the bath. The zinc oxide fume so produced is collected by normal gas cleaning methods.By examination of the thermodynamics of this process Bell, Turner, and Peters (1955) determined the zinc oxide activity of the slag over the duration of the fuming cycle.A combination of high temperature and high carbon monoxide/carbon dioxide ratio was found necessary for rapid zinc elimination.Since melting of the slag is an essential step in the slag fuming process, only two treatment methods appeared possible at Port Pirie until recently...

New Mexico ranks 2nd in uranium reserves in the U. S., which amounts to 15 million tons ore at 0.277% U3O8 (84 million lbs U3O8) at $30/lb (EIA, 2006). The most important deposit in the state is sandstone within the Morrison Formation (Jurassic) in the Grants district. More than 340 million pounds of U3O8 have been produced from these deposits from 1948-2002, accounting for 97% of the total production in New Mexico and more than 30% of the total production in the United States. Sandstone uranium deposits are defined as epigenetic concentrations of uranium in fluvial, lacustrine, and deltaic sandstones. Three types of sandstone uranium deposits are recognized: tabular (primary, trend, blanket, black-band), roll-front (redistributed, post-fault, secondary), and fault-related (redistributed, stack, post-fault). Several companies are planning to mine these deposits by in-situ leaching.

With gold first discovered at Carrick in 1864, exploration and mining on the Carrick Goldfield in Central Otago, New Zealand, has now been ongoing for more than 130 years. Recorded historical hard rock production from up to 52 different mining claims from 1864 to about 1921 is 24,047 ounces (oz) of gold. &nbsp; Since 1980 Amoco Minerals New Zealand Limited, CRA Exploration Pty. Limited, Amax Gold Mines New Zealand Limited and Summit Gold (New Zealand) Limited have conducted modem systematic exploration campaigns targeted at locating shear controlled gold bearing quartz lodes and stockwork deposits. More than NZ $1million has been spent by these companies on aerial photography, geological mapping, stream sediment surveys, soil and rock chip geochemistry as well as reverse circulation (RC) percussion and diamond drilling. &nbsp; RC drilling by Summit Resources in 1997 has identified a 1,500 m long zone of low-grade gold mineralisation at Lower Carrick, with an average grade of 1.00 g/t Au over a 14 m average thickness. This gold mineralisation, hosted within a low angle shear zone, has analogies with the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone in eastern Otago. Recent exploration and drilling at Carrick has revealed the potential to discover large (&gt;0.5 million ounce (Moz)) low-grade bulk shear controlled quartz vein and stockwork gold deposits similar to those now being mined at Macraes.

This paper will present the results of an analysis of several abandoned coal mine projects and includes field data for over a dozen different reclamation projects recently completed in the state of West Virginia. The analysis was performed with the objective of summarizing and or classification of the environmental consequences with reference to the characteristics of the mining facilities (surface, underground, etc.). The analysis also addressed the itemized cost of remediation with respect to procedures, environmental concerns and time. The results of the analysis are that each abandoned coal mine site in West Virginia have/had many unique features and in most cases include a combination of environmental concerns that complicate comparisons. The study also revealed that the abandoned mine land program for mines abandoned prior to 1977, that is being financed by a tax on the production of coal, has produced many benefits for the state of West Virginia. This grant program administered by the Office of Surface Mining, has resulted in a high quality methodology of remediation that has been successful for many years in greatly minimizing and/or eliminating environmental concerns from abandoned coal mines.
