Evaluating the performance of a shielded tunnel boring machine (TBM) can be difficult because the ground cannot be observed directly and in relation to the TBM attitude within the excavation. It is difficult to determine whether performance problems are caused by ground loading, steering issues, fine muck packing against the shield, or migration of annular grout around the shield. The Arrowhead Tunnels Project in Southern California uses strain gauges on its shielded hard rock TBMs to detect shield strains early and correlate them with tunneling conditions, thereby increasing the chances that problems will be correctly diagnosed and addressed to optimize TBM performance. The frequent automatic measurement of shield strain has also been valuable by confirming whether remedial methods used to free the machine after stoppages are effective. This paper discusses the qualitative interpretation of characteristic strain patterns on the Arrowhead Tunnels TBM shields and discusses installation details and special considerations for setting up a strain measurement system.

Base on the thermodynamic calculation of vapor pressure of lead, antimony and arsenic at high temperature, the possibility of separating lead, antimony and arsenic in different temperature was analyzed ,and the practice of producing qualified antimony white from lead-antimony alloy by direct blowing was introduced in detail in this paper. The blast furnace reduction smelting was brief introduced firstly, and then alkaline refining was applied to removing arsenic from lead-antimony alloy that contains As1%,Sb39%,Pb58%,the arsenic in the treated lead-antimony alloy could decrease to 0.009% by that method. The antimony white containing Sb2O3 99.5% could be produced by air blowing in the special furnace at 650? from the treated lead-antimony alloy. And the electrolytic lead could be achieved by electrolysis from the lead-rich alloy which contained 83% lead.With high-grade product being obtained the process was shortened. The technology has been applied successfully many years in Guangxi, China.

Assumptions are made of ideal mixing and that the density of silver can be obtained by extrapolating reported liquid density-temperature data through the freezing point back to the temperature range of interest. The results of this procedure using liquid silver density data of Kirshenbaum et al.5 are presented in Table I1 where it is observed that agreement is everywhere within <0.1 pct and generally is within 0.05 pct. Because the Sn-Ag alloys are dilute, the assumption of ideal behavior is, therefore, probably justified. In conclusion, the densities of dilute liquid solutions of silver in tin have been determined. Even for concentrations as low as 0.1 pct, the effect of silver on the density of liquid tin is clearly measurable. This work also suggests that for dilute alloys at temperatures far below the freezing point of the solute metal, densities may be accurately calculated by extrapolation of the pure metal data without having recourse to physical measurement on the alloy itself. plutonium having a grain size of about 100 µ. This paper presents data showing that large elongations of fine-grained a Pu can be obtained by using slow deformation rates. Large plasticity, however, of a Pu in compression has been observed.4 Reductions in thickness of 90 pct have been observed with no edge cracking. These large reductions are accompanied by concurrent re-crystallization. The deformation modes, which are quite complex, have been studied extensively by observing the deformation microstructures of polished surfaces that had been deformed in compression.5-7 Although slip apparently is a predominant mode of deformation at room temperature, grain boundary sliding and concurrent recrystallization become more predominant at high a temperatures.4&apos;7 Although recovery occurs,8,9 no grain growth has been reported in a Pu even at temperatures near the a =ß equilibrium temperature (-115oC), which is 0.7 of the calculated melting temperature of a Pu.10 From studies on other materials, it appears that high elongations can be obtained in alloys when the THE purpose of this technical note is to present briefly some data revealing high ductility of a Pu, which is normally considered brittle. The very low ductility of a Pu in tension has been reported by many investigators.&apos;-3 Gardner,1 for example, reported that the total elongation of a Pu at a testing speed of 0.015 ipm is less than 0.1 pct at room temperature and only about 1 pct at 100°C. "Quinsam coal mine is located about 25 km west of Campbell River on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Using continuous miners in a fully mechanized retreat room-and-pillar operation, it produces low sulphur, “super compliance” thermal coal for domestic and international markets at a rate of about 2600 t/d. Currently, 65 people work at the site, including some corporate employees.Opened in 1993, the Quinsam mine had a dismal safety record until 1997. Lost time injuries and medical aids were unacceptably high. In 1998, a change in corporate structure brought a change in safety attitudes; a total and unequivocal commitment to safety as job No.1 by corporate and site management. This commitment was clearly spelled out in a new mission statement, circulated to all employees by the new President and CEO, David Slater: “Safety is job No. 1; Production flows from safety; and Think safety at all times.” As well as re-defining workplace safety practices, QCC tightened engineering controls and enforced strict adherence to mine plans.This paper provides a general background to the mining operation, and describes the safety practices that have resulted in an enviable safety record in recent years, reflected by provincial and national recognition."

In the experimental concentration of Vermont talc-magnesite ores, talc concentrates and tailings rich in magnesite were obtained. On account of the possible market value of the magnesite, the tailings are given consideration&apos; in this report along with the talc. After some comments about the talc industry, the magnesite that accrued as tailings will be considered. Then the flotation results will follow.

Structurally- controlled deep leaching processes have removed vast quantities of carbonate from a substantial portion of the &quot;silica-dolomite&quot; enclosing the 500 copper orebody. Mine drainage subsequently allowed free access of air to the porous environment created and oxidation of sulphides commenced. During the mIne development stage the exothermic and temperature-dependent nature of these hydrolysis reactions resulted in a slow general elevation of ground temperatures. and levels of 90 - lOO&#176;C were attained in restricted moist sulphide-rich areas.With the advent of production and extensive use of explosives, the oxidation processes were locally raised to new levels of activity. Direct interaction of explosives and sulphides in favourable conditions caused temperature rises to above 260 C. Above this point the dry oxidation of sulphides in air was initiated and rapid escalation to the vicinity of 800 C has been known to occur in isolated cases.Ground reactivity is a function of the complex interrelationship of several controlling factors and no simple index exists.Control techniques are presently aimed at prevention of temperature rises in the range 100 -260 C. Inhibition of the rapid dry oxidation processes above 260 C is difllcult and current efforts have met with only partial success.

INTRODUCTION IN June, 1911, the writer spent a few days in studying the economic geology of the vicinity of Park City. During this rather hurried visit a number of specimens of ore were collected, which have since been examined. The results of these investigations show that bournonite (PbCuSbS3) is present in the ores in greater or less quantity. This fact has never before been reported, as far as can be learned. The failure to recognize this mineral is due to its similarity to tetrahedrite, with which it has probably been confused during a long period of years. Jamesonite (Pb2Sb2S5) has been reported from the region in a rather doubtful manner, but the writer has seen it in notable amounts from several mines, and can offer the first analysis of this mineral from the district. Calamine (H2Zn2SiO6) was found at one mine and has never been recognized and reported from the district.

Ensuring that diesel particulate matter (DPM) levels in underground metal and non-metal mines are maintained below statutory limits is an essential requirement of mine ventilation systems. However, despite the cost of providing ventilation, air ventilation rates are usually based upon models, assumptions, or measurements integrated over long durations rather than actual need. Real-time measurement of DPM, interpreted in terms of mine activity schedules, can offer better ventilation management to keep DPM within regulated levels while controlling costs. This work presents data from three demonstration sites with in-mine applications of an environmental particulate sensor that measured black carbon (BC) as a surrogate for DPM.Aethalometers are a class of environmental monitors that measure the light absorbance of aerosol particles at several optical wavelengths. A model AE33 Aethalometer was operated in three separate mines for periods of two weeks, three months, and seven-plus months, and the data was reported in real time as a concentration of BC. Concentration of aromatic organic compounds, which can indicate other forms of combustion, was also reported. The data was used to:- measure the relative efficiency of a new scale-model DPM air scrubber- determine if ventilation could be reduced in a shotcrete loading facility without compromising air quality- evaluate diurnal and weekly DPM levels in a large-entry stone mine. Instrument data were displayed locally and stored for later downloading in all cases. In one mine, the instrument was connected to a local controller, and in another it was connected to the mine’s underground network so that DPM data was presented in real time to a display in the mine ventilation engineering office on the surface.The results showed that the air scrubber removes from 82&#160;per&#160;cent to 95&#160;per&#160;cent of the DPM; that DPM produced during shotcrete loading is only a minor part of overall DPM levels; and that wide variations in DPM levels exist in the limestone operation. The DPM monitor operated continuously for extended periods in these underground environments. The only maintenance required was the routine replacement of filter tape, typically on a two-week schedule. A sample diluter, which is currently being tested, could extend the intervals between filter changes. This paper forms the second of a series, in which it is proposed to communicate the results of an extensive research into the influence of alloying elements on the physical properties of lead, now being carried out in the Metallurgy School of the University of Melbourne.Some general comments on this research were made by the present writer as an introduction to the first contribution by R. S. Russell*: It was there pointed out that it was the intention to prepare lead as pure as possible, to determine its properties and then to make alloys with the various elements added singly, and in various combinations, in order to determine the effect of each. This line of action is still being pursued.It occurred to the writer, however, that this fundamental attack might, with advantage, be accompanied by a parallel investigation in which lead of commercial purity would form the basis material. Wind erosion can be a major cause of the loss and dispersion of tailings material from a tailings dam into its surrounding environment. Such dust dispersion can be a serious nuisance, as well as a health hazard to inhabitants in nearby settlements, and can also damage the health of animals, degrade crops, making them less marketable, and cause soil and water pollution. The problem of wind erosion can affect tailings dams in all types of climate, but becomes worse as climatic aridity increases. Because clouds of dust are often observed billowing across the top surfaces of tailings dams in dry windy weather, there is a common misconception that the dust arises from wind erosion of the top surface. As a result, much effort and money is vainly spent on treating the tops of tailings dams to prevent dust generation, whereas the slopes of the dams are the true major dust source. This paper briefly reviews what is known of erosion of tailings dams and then proceeds to describe the mechanics of wind erosion in general, and how it affects tailings dams in particular. Finally, recommendations are made for mitigating wind erosion of tailings dams and the resulting blowing dust.

The evaluation of historical goldfields has been common over the past 15 years, reflecting changing economic conditions, improvements in knowledge and technology and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins, which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold, have variable geometry and architecture and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation, since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. Mine records include documents such as plans, sections, reports, news cuttings, production tabulations, etc. A major advantage for the modern explorer is the capability of computer modelling to display this data in 3D. Historical records can give the explorer substantial information on various deposit characteristics, not least grade and geological continuity, geometry and architecture, mineralogy, metallurgical properties, bulk density and ground conditions. From an evaluation perspective, historical records can be used to support a Mineral Resource estimate, though its application will depend upon the quality and quantity of the data and judgement of the Competent Person. Effectively used, historical records can reduce geological uncertainty and focus evaluation efforts û thus reducing project risk.

In reviewing available vacuum filtration equipment in this paper, several types of filters have been included which are probably not familiar to operators in the mining industry. However, it was felt that these units might be of interest in the event that an application should arise for the filtration of a product in the future that does not exist today. In addition, exposure of our industry to equipment used in other industries might have a tendency to be thought provoking and perhaps lead to the development of equipment and/or applications in our industry which do not necessarily exist at this time. Most innovations in filtration equipment have been confined to the improvement or design change of components and accessories, particularly reflecting the availability of materials of construction that have been developed. Recent developments in the application of horizontal belt filters have been innovative. The application of this unit as a substitute for or an adjunct to thickeners in a CO circuit can certainly be innovative and perhaps provide a basis for reduction in capital and operating costs in this area. For example, mill tails are generally pumped at the highest possible density that will adequately flow. Tailings ponds and dams with their attendant design requirements are based upon this estimated water volume. Availability of a much dryer, non-flowing filter cake opens up several new options for disposal. Considerable cost savings could result in the design and planning of disposal areas for containing dryer material. . No attempt has been made in this paper to provide a manual for the operation of all of the many types of equipment that are available. Rather, the paper tries to present an overview.

This information circular is a revision of I.C. 7238, Danger from Carbon Monoxide in the Home, by L. B. Berger and H. H. Schrenk, issued in April 1943. Each winter brings its toll of deaths and serious accidents from the deadly gas, carbon monoxide. Newspapers carry warnings to the public of the, dangers of this gas, and frequent news items report the finding of persons dead at unconscious from the effects of carbon monoxide, yet these accidents continue. Either these warnings are not read, or they are unheeded by people who feel that, "It can&apos;t happen to me." It can happen to you carbon monoxide is no respecter of persons.

Svedala started a development program in 1997 to develop a process to convert waste tires into valuable commodities. A review of numerous approaches revealed short-comings in the various approaches either process, mechanical, combination of factors, or trying to emphasis the production of low value products. A market study revealed that a process that could produce a good grade of carbon black would be economically feasible. This paper discusses the laboratory and pilot plant development and commercial plant design.

The primary problems of pillar design in seams subject to interaction are due not only to difficulties in predicting loading, but also to the often unsymmetrical nature of the stress fields. The effects of uneven stress fields on failure patterns within a pillar were studied wing a two dimensional finite element method. Lower seams, including ultra- close mining situations were evaluated considering conventional pillars. Pillar case study data for under mining were analyzed to determine if empirical trends in stable pillar sizing could be derived. Recommendations for multi-seam pillar design are made, based on anticipated loading conditions within a pressure bulb. Applications of the research results are demonstrated using case studies

Ecuador a gross domestic product (GDP) grew 8% despite a slowdown in production and sales of petroleum, the dominant economic sector. Crude petroleum exports, which amounted to about 35% of total exports in 1977, were valued et $484 million,2 a decrease of 14% from 1976 values. Petroleum export sales were depressed because foreign buyers were somewhat uncertain that State-owned Corporación Estatal Petrólera Ecuatoriana (CEPE) held legal title to the oil until final settlement with Ecuadorian Gulf Oil Corp. In addition to the legal complication, Ecuador maintained a relatively high export price for oil until late in the year. There was also a shrinkage of traditional U.S, markets owing to the Alaskan pipeline becoming operational and an increased availability of Mexican supplies. The export market was also affected by increased domestic production in Peru and Chile, which lessened their import needs, and the pressure of greater competition from the Middle East in supplying crude oil to Caribbean refineries. About 20.4 million barrels or 40% of Ecuador&apos;s total crude exports went to the United States. Only 27 wells were drilled in Ecuador during L977; of these, 16 produced oil, 3 were dry holes, and 8 were suspended. About 31 wells were planned for 1978. Three new oilfields were discovered during 1977; two by CEPE in northeastern Ecuador and one by the Argentine State oil company Yacimientos Petraliferos Fiscales (YPF), operating in Ecuador under a service contract. Underground mining accidents in the USA in recent times have prompted the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to review emergency and tracking systems for underground mines. Several communication and tracking systems are available on the market and various systems have been installed in mines around the world. In addition, MSHA?s standard on Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) requires mines to comply with the final PEL of 160µg/m3 by May 20, 2008. Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc., Underground Division, has been in operation since 1995 and an extensive control and monitoring network, and a leaky feeder voice network is in place. Enhancements to the communication and control system are currently being implemented to include a PED emergency notification system, wireless LAN with tracking of personnel and equipment in the mine, and a ventilation control system that will use the tracking information and ventilation data to automate much of the mine ventilation system. Expected benefits from such a system would be enhanced communication with miners, emergency notification, location of miners and equipment, energy savings, improved ventilation control, and improved atmospheric conditions in the mine including reduction of diesel particulate matter (DPM).

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Eng.) Metallurgy and Materials Engineering Small and large welded aluminium specimens were tested in fatigue and the results compared with design curves for aluminium in specification BS8118. Metallurgical tests were also performed on the specimens in order to correlate microscopic and macroscopic phenomena. The small-scale fatigue test results were in reasonable agreement with results in BS8118, whereas the large-scale fatigue tests showed that BS8118 is conservative.

The ore extraction rate and the incorporation of new areas are key operational parameters. In massive deposits mined by caving techniques they both control the cave back geometry, which is mostly responsible for the induced stress state around productive levels. Early detection of deviations from admissible geometries will prevent stability problems related to geomechanical hazards, helping to improve safety and working conditions and reduce the potential for lost reserves.This paper describes a mine planning tool currently in use at the El Teniente mine. This tool involves the control of the cave geometry based on rules that have been defined as a result of different studies and experience collected during the operational history of the mine.This mine planning strategy achieves an extractive mining process with lower risk than conventional planning methods, ensuring ore reserves extraction if followed as planned while reducing unexpected changes in mining sequences.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Pinochet, A and Caviedes, C, 2016.
