The U.S. Department of Energy has undertaken, in a cost sharing partnership with industry and utilities, an extensive coal-oil mixture (COM) combustion program in a number of promising applications. One of these is the injection of COM through tuyeres into a blast furnace in lieu of oil. From work done previously, it has been established that COM can be burned in existing oil, fired facilities. The issues being addressed by the current DOE program are: 1) determination of best available technology to achieve environmentally acceptable operation, and 2) determination of applications for which COM can be utilized economically.

This project focused effort on three separate areas: demonstration of a low seam longwall illumination system, design of illumination systems for low coal auger miners, and an assessment of machine lighting systems for machinery used to mine low seam coal. Results indicated illumination systems can be purchased by the mine operators of low coal seams. These systems can be supplied with the equipment as a factory integrated system or can be retrofitted to the machine or longwall equipment.

"Thin film multilayer anti-reflection coatings (Si02/Si/Si02) having thicknesses 286/571/143nm were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering deposition technique on 0.5mm thick Si(100)-substrates. Post-deposition annealing is also carried out in the temperature range 150-650°C for 4hr at the rate of 10°C /min. Si Optical window was designed at 4.21lm wavelengths and correlated with modeling software. The films are transparent in the 3-51lffi band of the electromagnetic spectrum, firmly adhered to the substrate. The prepared multilayer thin films are characterized optically and structurally using a spectrophotometer, an atomic force microscope, x-ray diffraction and a scanning electron microscope. Optical and structural characterizations show that the %transmittance is between 60% and 75%, no appreciable change in crystal structure and roughness of coatings vary between 9 and 25 nm when annealed in the temperature range of 150-650oC. Local elemental characterization on the surface of the thin film was carried out using energy dispersive spectroscopy. The quantitative result of energy dispersive spectroscopy has also shown that the ratio of Si to 0 on the film is 0.67: 1.IntroductionSi02 thin films have unique properties in the interfaces with Si and most studied materials in the field of microelectronics and optical devices [1]. Multilayer thin films are using nowadays in the design and fabrication of the shrinking systems with a variety of fields such as optoelectronic devices. The physical properties and parameters can be controlled at scales of microns down to nanometers by using RF magnetron sputtering system [2].Silicon and Silicon dioxide are used as coating materials [3]. These thin films are laid on top of each other in SiO2/Si/Si02 order by RF magnetron sputtering on top of a substrate as given in Table 1."

"INTRODUCTION The Holt-McDermott Mine is wholly-owned gold mining operation of American Barrick Resources Corp. that begun operations in June 1988.The property is located 0.5 km. south of Highway 101 East in the Harker-Holloway Townships of Northeastern Ontario, 7 miles south of Lake Abitibi and 15 miles west of the Quebec-Ontario border.Employees of the operation travel daily from various communities in the area, predominantly from Kirkland Lake, Ont., which is located 65 km. to the southwest.The significance of the operation is that it is the first full scale operation associated to the Oestor-Porcupine Fault to go into full production in recent history as well as the first Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) operation in the province owing to the natural occurring carbonaceous ores that are associated to the ore body and the geological fault systems.GEOLOGYThe Holt-McDermott deposit is located in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt, a short distance west of the Ontario-Quebec border. Ore grade material follows the footwall contact of a fault zone known locally as the McKenna Fault, which is thought to be a splay off of the Oestor-Porcupine Fault, itself a major feature in the Abitibi belt.The McKenna Fault strikes approximately east-west (as does the Oestor-Porcupine) and dips to the south at sixty-five to seventy degrees. The fault lies within a package of mafic volcanic rocks (basalts). These rocks have been strongly altered and mineralized adjacent to the McKenna Fault, and the resulting lens-like ore bodies constitute the mining targets."

"ABSTRACT: The axial and lateral monotonic and cyclic behavior of helical pile foundations was investigated and new innovative helical screw systems suitable for seismic loadings were developed and patented. More than one hundred full scale field load tests were conducted on instrumented helical screw piles installed in cohesive soil. The piles included: plain helical screw piles (P-HSP); grouted (G-HSPs); fiber reinforced polymer FRP-G-HSPs; and reinforced grouted RG-HSPs. The RG-HSP piles axial capacity was more than twice that for P-HSP, with minimal reduction after cyclic loading, and their lateral capacity was more than 3 times the P-HSPs capacity. A 3-D finite element model was established. The results of 3-D finite element modeling were used to establish the load transfer mechanism and a design methodology for the considered piles.INTRODUCTION AND LITERATURE REVIEWHelical (screw) anchors have been utilized in tension loading and have gained popularity for bearing load applications. Helical piles represent an overall cost effective alternative to conventional piles for new construction and repair applications. The helical piles speed and ease of installation, less noise during installation added advantage with regards to their efficiency and reliability for underpinning including re-support and reconstruction of distressed and damaged foundations for either stabilization or rehabilitation. The “square shaft” SS175 pile is a segmented deep foundation system with helical steel bearing plates (helices) welded to a central steel shaft. Load is transferred from the shaft to the surrounding soil through these bearing plates. Segments or sections are joined with bolted couplings. Practically installed depth is limited only by soil resistance and economics. A helical bearing plate or helix is one pitch of a screw thread. All helices regardless of their diameter have a standard 75 mm pitch (Figure.1). The performance of single helical anchors and group action were studied experimentally and theoretically by several researchers, the researches focuses on the installation torque and uplift resistance. Some researches focus on the load carrying capacity with little pile response to cyclic loading effects or to instrumented full scale field testing. Helical piles axial compressive or lateral loading still is not well characterized and needs more analyses and their seismic performance was not investigated. For such this research was initiated to investigate the helical piles monotonic and cyclic performances under axial and lateral loadings to consider their usage in different applications in seismic zones. Among the several researchers, Clemence (1983); Mooney et al. (1985) conducted field and laboratory testing; Hoyt (1989), Hoyt et al. (1995), and Ghaly and Clemence (1998) conducted theoretical and experimental testing, Puri and Vijay (1984), Huang et al. (1995), Perko (2000), and Pack (2000) conducted theoretical analyses. Rao and Prasad (1993), Prasad and Rao (1994), conducted experimental testing; Vickars and Clemence (2000) studied the performance of helical piles with grouted shafts."

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. This will be the 21st Annual National Mining Museum and Induction Banquet. The four inductees are Lew Eklund, 76, Carrie Jane Billings Everson (1843-1914), ?Colonel? William C. Greene (1851-1911) and Arthur L. Hawkesworth (1860-1905). Lew Eklund founded Eklund Drilling that is now based in Elko, NV. He invented many designs that play a major role in today?s mining industry. His Cyclo Blower and various sampling devices he designed helped to revolutionize gold deposit exploration by allowing mining companies to effectively sample microscopic gold. Carrie Jane Billings Everson discovered and proved a method for bulk oil flotation concentration of mineral ores, the precursor to modern froth flotation methods of minerals concentration. She patented her process in 1886. In the early 1890s, coworkers built and operated demonstration plants incorporating her bulk oil flotation process. ?Colonel? William C. Greene was responsible for the development of the great copper mining properties of Cananea, Mexico. In seven years, he went from ragged cattleman and adventurer to the greatest captain of industry the borderlands have ever seen. Arthur L. Hawkesworth was a master mechanic for Anaconda Copper. He invented the detachable drill bit. His invention generated tremendous savings for the mining industry in time, in dollars and in safer operating conditions underground. His bit?s long lasting contribution to improved mine economics is immeasurable. The 21st Annual National Mining Museum and Induction Banquet will begin with an open house and reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The inductions will bring to 201 the number of mining ?greats? whose engraved photographs and biographical sketches are installed in the National Mining Hall of Fame.

"""Pilot Plant Operations"" is a final-year core course given to the Metallurgy and Materials Science students at the University of Toronto. This course involves a laboratory study of an industrial project at an industrial site. Details of this program are discussed and reviewed after eight years of experience. IntroductionEducators in the field of Metallurgy and Materials Science have long agreed that ""hands-on"" experience is an important component in the education of metallurgical engineers. This philosophy is reflected in the undergraduate curricula of most metallurgical schools. The major problems encountered with laboratory-associated courses are the requirements for equipment, space and funds for both purchase and maintenance of equipment. For example, consider an exercise in crushing and grinding treatment in a mineral processing laboratory. Such operations require the handling of tons of material and often equipment of large size. The problems of storage of ore, methods of handling and maintenance of equipment are a few of the concerns facing the department. Considering that metallurgical departments at universities are, in general, relatively small, the support to purchase and maintain largescale equipment becomes an annual budgetary concern. In reality, universities today are not geared to operate mini-pilot plant equipment, either in terms of space or personnel.For the above reasons, in 1972an undergraduate core course called ""Pilot Plant Operations"" was introduced to the fourth year curriculum in Metallurgy and Materials Science at the University of Toronto. This course consists of I to 2 full weeks (8 hrs per day) of pilot plant laboratory study at an industrial site on a project of mutual interest with the industrial organization whose facility is being used. The first 5 years of the program were carried out at the pilot plant facility at the Ontario Research Foundation; Stelco's Research Centre in Burlington, Ontario, was used for the last 3 years. The nature of the projects undertaken during the 8-year period is shown in Table 1."

The acid plant consists of the following units: 1. Glover tower. 6. Mills-Packard type chambers. 3. Reaction towers. 6. Gay-Lussac towers.The sulphur dioxide bearing gases, used in the manufacture of the acid, are obtained from the roasting of zinc concentrate. Six Herreshoff type furnaces are available, each with an effective hearth area of 520 sq. ft.The concentrate contains approximately 30% sulphur, of which about 72 is ultimately recovered as acid. The oxides of nitrogen are added to the gases in the requisite proportions partly from nitrous vitriol and from nitric acid in the Glover tower, and partly from nitrous vitriol in some of the chambers and connecting flues.The acid leaving the Glover tower is cooled by the ordinary water-cooling coils, while the cooling of the chamber gases is effected by circulating water over the outer surface of the chambers, and by spraying nitrous vitriol and weak acid into them.Flow of gases throughout the plant is regulated and controlled by means of regulus metal fans, fitted with variable speed gears.

Recent hotel investment projects in China often involve very tight programmes for design and construction. An example given in this paper involves a 24-storey reinforced concrete hotel tower with 460 bedrooms and a 3-level podium commercial complex. The building is supported by relatively widely spaced columns and shear walls below which 88 number large diameter piers were excavated through fill, silty and bouldery clay on to dolerite and slate at depths between 15 to 3 0m below ground level. Whereas much experience has been accumulated in Hong Kong, hand-excavated pier foundation was only adopted for the first time in Dalian. This paper describes and discusses the various factors influencing the choice of the type and design of the foundation system. The criteria for determining appropriate founding levels are then explained. During installation, revisions to the acceptance procedure were made to cater for local conditions. Emphasis is placed on the role of the geotechnical engineer in making on-site decisions during construction. The advantage of the foundation system in accommodating on-site changes resulting from local complex ground conditions is demonstrated. The pier foundations were successfully completed ahead of programme.

"Abstract: The combination of failure in joints of diaphragm walls and their exposure to water pressure may have far reaching effects ranging from water leakage to the risk of catastrophic loss of stability for the retaining wall and civil structures behind it. Investigations of imperfect joints in diaphragm walls have led to the development and testing of a quality tool to monitor the joint integrity of diaphragm walls during construction. By applying independent mechanical sensors (“joint inspector”) to the steel frame of hydraulic or mechanical grabs, it is now possible to record the surface conditions of exposed primary joints during the construction of secondary panels. This allows for the implementation of corrective action during the construction process should joint quality not indicate a watertight connection to the adjacent panel. The joint inspector, used for different types of stop ends, was tested on a full scale test field at several construction sites. The implementation of this new quality tool drives a new quality standard for deep excavations in inner city areas.General introduction to diaphragm wallsDiaphragm walls are reinforced concrete elements constructed using bentonite slurry to temporarily support an open trench in the ground. They are used in two main fields of application in civil construction, as foundation elements for vertical and horizontal loads (barrettes) and as retaining walls for excavation pits.Particularly for deep excavation pits in inner city areas, diaphragm walls are used as temporary or permanent walls of retaining walls. Alternative retaining wall systems would be secant pile walls, sheet piles or soldier piles, but these have disadvantages in structural strength when compared to diaphragm walls. If the vertical load of existing buildings next to the excavation pit has to be accommodated, the most practical solution can be found using diaphragm walls supported by prestressed anchors, steel struts or slabs."

A numerical model for analysing the drainage of fill in mine stopes has been described. The model can be used to analyse the process of fill drainage in existing and proposed mine stopes. The validity and potential value of the model have been established by experience with a simpler, 2-dimensional numerical model and by testing the new model against the earlier model. The new model is more useful than the 2-dimensional model because it allows for heterogeneity of fill material within the stope - a factor that has been demonstrated to affect drainage characteristics significantly. The 3-dimensional model is also capable of predicting pore pressures and drainage rates at specific locations in the stope without the need to resort to 2-dimensional generalisations. Such information, integrated with relevant field data as they become available, will provide valuable mine planning information for the scheduling of filling operations and design of fill mixes

As we look back through the Proceedings of our Institute, we find few papers dealing directly with education and recruitment. Apart from papers prepared in the earlier decades of this century, there was little written discussion on the subject until the 1950s, and mostly this was by the professionals, the professors and lecturers who staff the various mining schools of Australia and New Zealand.I use the term "mining school" in its fullest and widest meaning, to cover all aspects from ore to metal, and not in the narrow meaning that the word might imply. At the same time, in restricting the parameters of this address to "ore to metal" I recognize that I am excluding the very important fields of physical metallurgy and materials science; this I do because there is a limit to the quantum of any paper, and in fact these subjects are more closely allied to the use rather than the production of metals.However, the lack of education papers does not mean that education has been regarded lightly by The Institute. Sir Maurice Mawby in his presidential address in 1968, reminded us of the original objectives of The Institute, one 'of which was, "To promote the arts and sciences connected with the economical production of the useful minerals and metals ...". Our present Royal Charter is more specific when it says that one of the objects of The Institute is, ". . . to encourage the study of engineering with special reference to mining and metallurgy ...". If we recognize that in itself membership of our Institute is one means of continuing our education, it is true that education has been a concern of The Institute since it was first founded.Occasionally in recent years, an intrepid president has ventured to tell the academics what the industry needs, and he generally does this in a "no-question" situation! However it is encouraging that those entrusted with mineral education have always accepted this; they keep coming back for more and ask us to tell them what we want, and they will provide it.In 1948 a considerable dialogue on education was initiated when a standing committee was established by the Council of The Institute. RESEARCH strengthened the position of cesium as the preferred material (commonly but erroneously called "fuel") for ionic propulsion engines. Its use as an element of the plasma thermocouple for generating electricity also seemed more likely. Domestic Production.-No domestic ore of cesium and rubidium was produced. San Antonio Chemicals, Inc., San Antonio, Tex., and Maywood Chemical Works, Maywood, N.J., continued to produce cesium and rubidium compounds including carbonate, chromate, hydroxide, nitrate, sulfate, and all four halides. Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., began producing various cesium and rubidium salts. American Potash & Chemical Corp., Los Angeles, Calif., offered cesium and rubidium for sale.

The 1989 Annual Meeting and Exhibit of SME in Las Vegas, NV, February 27 - March 2, 1989, was the largest ever, drawing more than 4000 regis¬trants and 240 exhibit booths. Technical sessions included presentation of nearly 500 papers, including symposia on Biotechnology in Minerals and Metals Processing, Surplus Capacity in the International Metals Industry, and APCOM `89 - the 21st International Symposium on Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry. Technical sessions covered the gamut of minerals industry interests; however, the proximity of the meeting to recently surging gold development in Nevada drew special attention to gold operating practices. Several of the papers on gold processing are reviewed below. To keep pace with the strong world- wide interest in gold development, SME has scheduled three additional upcoming programs that will focus specifically on gold: World Gold '89 - Gold Forum on Technology and Practices will be held November 5 - 8, 1989 in Reno, NV, as a joint meeting and exhibit between SME and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Technical sessions will encompass a full program of papers covering geology and exploration, mining, and mineral and metallurgical processing. Cooperating sponsors for this meeting include the Canadian Mineral Processors Division of CIM, The Institute of Metals, The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, The Mining, Geological & Metallurgical Institute of India, and The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Gold '90 - Salt Lake City, UT, February 26 - March 1, 1990, will be a symposium held in conjunction with the 1990 SME Annual Meeting. Current research on the processing of refractory gold ores will generate innovative papers on process mineralogy at this symposium, with special emphasis on gold with pyrite and gold with carbon. Other sessions are planned for gold exploration and mining, gold metallurgy, gold plant design and practice, and gold in scams. Advances in Gold and Silver Processing Conference, October 1 - 3, 1990 will be held in Reno, NV. Preliminary planning calls for technical sessions on heap leaching practice, refractory ore processing, non-traditional lixiviants, bioleaching, metal recovery from solution, and the environmental aspects of processing operations. PLANT DESIGN, OPERATION Technical sessions organized by the Minerals and Metallurgical Processing Division of SME at this year's meeting in Las Vegas covered a wide range of gold operating practices. Eight papers relating to gold plant design, operation, and equipment are summarized here. Preprints of these papers are available by writing to Publications Sales, PO Box 625002, Littleton, CO 80162-5002 ($2.50 per paper for AIME members, $4 for nonmembers). Continuous elution process A. M. Stone, of Bechtel Australia Pty. Ltd., described the "Development of the Continuous Elution Process for Extraction of Gold from Carbon" (pre-print 89-75). Developed by Bechtel Pacific Corp. for Ok Tedi Mining Ltd., the Continuous Elution Process uses the same reagents as batch processes for elution of gold from carbon, while yielding significant savings in stripping vessel size and energy consumed in comparison with equivalent batch processes. The process is also simpler to operate than batch processes. Other advantages include reduced maintenance costs, higher average eluate grade, and near steady final eluate grade. Pilot testing for the Continuous Elution Process was conducted at Western Mining's Kambalda gold plant beginning in December 1982. Semisoluble salt minerals are characterized by their ionic bonding and are distinguished from soluble salt minerals by their limited solubility in water. One group of semisoluble salt minerals being considered is the alkaline earth salt minerals, including fluorite (CaF2), calcite (CaCO3) and apatite (Ca5F (PO4)3), as well as celestite (SrSO4) and barite (BaSO4). Another group of semisoluble salt minerals being considered is the rare-earth salts, which include bastnaesite ((Ce, La) CO3F), monazite (CePO4) and xenotime (YPO4). Surface chemistry features of these selected semisoluble salt minerals are discussed with respect to flotation separations. First, the surface chemistry features of alkaline earth semisoluble salt minerals are reviewed, and then the surface chemistry features of rare-earth semisoluble salt minerals are examined. The discussion includes electrokinetic behavior, wetting characteristics and collector adsorption.

Three main divisions of the Proterozoic are recognized in the North-West Division of Western Australia. These are referred to, in order of decreasing age, as the Mt. Bruce Supergroup, the Bresnahan Group, and theBangemall Group. The stratigraphy and distribution of each is described, their relative ages discussed, and a brief geological history of the whole area is presented.

The composition of ferromanganese slag is very important as it determines the slag/metal equilibrium relations including MnO content of final slag, melting relations and slag viscosity. The slag composition is further expected to influence the process temperature. The properties of ferromanganese slags are suitably described by its basicity and A/S mass ratios. The influence of slag basicity has been discussed in the previous papers. The present paper will discuss the effect of Al2O3 on melting relations, viscosity and MnO-content of final slag. This discussion will be based on assessed thermochemical databases and a recently developed viscosity model.

The present study investigates the influence of ferrous iron (as FeSO4) and ferric iron (as Fe2 (SO4)3), and pyrite (FeS2) on the ability of bacterial leaching of a high-grade sulfide Zn–Pb ore. In this regard, shake flask experiments were carried out at 5% (w/v) pulp density of the ore sample (having 40.7% Zn and 12.4% Pb initial metal content) using a consortium of mesophilic iron and sulfur-oxidizing acidophiles. A concentration of 0.04 mol/L of ferric iron in the leaching media was found to be optimum for zinc extraction without affecting growth of the microorganisms. Under this concentration, the dissolution of Zn, Pb, Cd, and As was found to be 57%, 0.2%, 0.03%, and 9.9% in 25 days. Using ferrous iron in the media, 0.16 mol/L of Fe2+ was found to be the optimum concentration for efficient bacterial growth and metal dissolution (54.6% Zn, 0.08% Pb, 0.03% Cd, and 10.2% As) from the sample in 25 days. On the other hand, using pyrite as the source of energy for bacterial growth, an initial 12-day lag period was observed when compared to the effect of ferrous iron in the media. Under the optimum concentration (test with 0.24 mol/L iron in the form of pyrite), the dissolution of Zn, Pb, Cd, and As was found to be 39.8%, 0.1%, 0.03%, and 10% in 25 days. The surface chemistry analysis indicated formation of a sulfur layer over the particle surface that hindered reagent diffusion and affected metal recovery through bioleaching.

In the course of the last twenty eight years the copper lodes of New Caledonia have been periodically worked or abandoned, until quite recently, probably attracted by the higher price of the metal, British capital has again been induced to embark upon the further development of several copper properties, which at present give reasonable promise of becoming regular producers. Owing to its proximity to Australia (only a three day's journey by mail steamer from Sydney) New Caledonia becomes of additional interest to Australian commerce in general, and it is to be hoped that the French Government may see their way before long to make the best of this natural position, to the mutual benefit of both countries concerned.Op till now all copper ores and concentrates which have been shipped from New Caledonia, were treated in Australian smelting works furthermore, Australian mine managers and miners have from time to time been connected with New Caledonian mining ventures, but, unfortunately, it must be said that nearly everyone of them returned to Australia thoroughly disgusted with his experience over there. Even to the casual observer, it is not so very difficult to find a proper explanation for these shortcomings in the peculiar economic conditions of the 'French colony, as many of the objections which have hitherto existed in connection with mining operations, were the direct consequences of a system of colonisation which could not possibly have been productive of better results.
