INTRODUCTION Background Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is one of the largest cities of the world. As many as 33 million people live in Tokyo and three neighboring prefectures although the city occupies only 0.6% of the area of the country. The network of Metropolitan Expressways serves as a major artery for daily physical distribution in Tokyo. The Central Circular Route of the Metropolitan Expressway (MECCR) is located innermost among the three circular routes in Tokyo (Figure 1). Once completed, MECCR is expected to drastically mitigate traffic congestion in the central Tokyo area and provide drivers wider varieties of options in route selection. Alleviating congestion is estimated to reduce 400,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The eastern and northern sections and part of the western section of MECCR have been completed with the total length reaching 33 km. The western section will be extended southward by approximately 4 km in the spring of 2010. An 11-km-long western section of MECCR that is currently being constructed is composed mostly of tunnels. A large number of power supply, gas supply, telephone, drinking water and sewerage pipes have been placed under the Yamatedori avenue along which MECCR is being constructed. The shield tunneling method has therefore been adopted for constructing tunnels along the route. The method involves the advancement of a shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) through the ground simultaneously assembling segmental rings within the shield. The method not only enables the building of highway tunnels more quickly and efficiently than other methods but also minimizes the effects of construction work on the surrounding area and the environment. Constructing the tunnel using the conventional cut-and-cover method might have required large amounts of time and cost because relocating the numerous objects buried under the Yamatedori avenue might have been necessary during tunnel construction. It was also considered desirable to place the tunnel at a depth of 30 m or more from surface to prevent tunnel construction from adversely affecting railways because the tunnel was expected to cross eleven railways and subways. This is one of the reasons for selecting shield tunneling as an effective method. The shield tunneling method was finally adopted for a length of 7 km in the 11-km western section of MECCR. The shield tunneling method was also employed in the Ohashi Tunnel located southernmost in the 11-km western section of MECCR. This paper describes the construction of the Ohashi Shield Tunnel.

This paper presents an overview of the New Mississippi Tunnel Outfall for the Transportation Expansion Project (T-REX). The Outfall conveys highway and other urban drainage to the South Platte River as well as provides long needed relief from flooding problems in the southeastern portion of the Interstate 25 highway corridor. The Outfall tunnel incorporates a one-pass precast concrete segmented liner to convey storm water under I-25 then under Mississippi Avenue to the river. The Outfall crosses both the existing I-25 as well as the future improvements including under the Light Rail Transit, a new bridge abutment, widened lanes, and new retaining walls. The Outfall also crosses adjacent to several buildings and five bridges, under major traffic and utility intersections, and through difficult geology.

Introduction The Energy Metals Corporation (EMC) holds numerous mineral properties in the northern portion of the Great Divide Basin including the JAB Property, one of several potential properties being planned for development as a satellite facility to the greater Antelope Uranium Project. A National Instrument 43-101 Technical Report has been completed for the JAB property. This report estimates total measured and indicated mineral resources on the property totaling 3,555,022 pounds U3O8 contained in 2,400,875 tons at an average grade of 0.073 % U3O8 at a .25 GT cutoff in accordance with CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves. The JAB Property is located in Sections 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23, Township 26 North, Range 94 West, approximately Latitude 42o 14’ North and Longitude 108o 00’ West (Figure 1, Location Map). This property consists of unpatented mining lode claims and Wyoming State mineral leases comprising approximately 2,100 acres.

In the course of investigating the soft X-ray absorption spectra of Ni-A1 alloys, Das and ~zfiroff' observed an anomalous brittleness in solid solutions containing 3 to 5 at. pct Al. The brittle alloys also had anomalously larger lattice constants' and the fine structure at the nickel K edge of an alloy containing 3.96 at. pct A1 unexpectedly resembled that of NiA1 more closely than that of a solid solution containing 5.51 at. pct Al. This led them to suggest the possibility that short-range ordering was produced during the homogenization anneal to which each specimen was subjected, similar to that observed in dilute solutions of vanadium and of chromium in nickel: as the principal cause of embrittlement. It was decided to repeat the above measurements on several alloys in this composition range in order to test the above hypothesis and to establish the effect of heat treatment on the alloys' properties. Three solid solutions in this range were prepared containing, respectively, 3.16, 4.00, and 4.54 at. pct Al, in addition to alloys containing 6 and 9 pct. All samples were annealed in vacuum at 1800°F for 100 hr and then furnace-cooled to room temperature, as in the original study. The lattice constants of these alloys are shown by open circles in Fig. 1 and can be seen to fit quite closely the curve established by the previously measured values, indicated by solid circles. (The experimental errors are of the order of the size of the circles, +o.oo~R.) The three alloys containing 3 to 5 at. pct A1 were found to be quite brittle, as previously reported. In order to test the possibility of ordering, these three solid solutions were again heated to 1800°F and, following a few hours at that temperature, were quenched directly to room temperature. All three alloys lost their brittleness. In order to verify the proposed ordering hypothesis, it was decided to subject each sample to several cycles of quenching and annealing (disordering and ordering). The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the West Virginia Office of Miners? Health, Safety, and Training (WVOMHS&T) investigated the explosion at the Sago Mine in West Virginia, which occurred on January 2, 2006, and resulted in 12 fatalities. As part of the investigation, the agencies requested that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory evaluate the effects of explosions on specific mine ventilation seals and other structures and objects at its Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM). The results of the LLEM study would assist MSHA and WVOMHS&T in a more thorough understanding of the various questions that arose during their investigations of the explosion. Six large-scale explosion tests were conducted in the LLEM from April to October 2006. The protocols for these tests, and in particular the procedures for constructing various Omega block seals, were developed mainly by MSHA and WVOMHS&T. NIOSH developed the experimental procedures at the LLEM that would provide the required range of explosion pressures against the seals. Three 40-in-thick seal designs using Omega 384 low-density block were constructed in the LLEM and exposed to various explosion pressures. These seal designs are referred to in this report as the ?2001 design,? the ?hybrid design,? and the ?Sago design.? The 2001-design Omega block seal (80 in high) located in crosscut 2 of the LLEM survived all six explosions, with pressure loadings up to 51 psi. The 2001-design Omega block seal (88 in high) in C-drift was destroyed during Test 2, which subjected the seal to a head-on explosion that resulted in a pressure loading of 51 psi. The height difference between the two seals and the orientation of each seal to the explosion were contributing factors. The higher seal would be weaker for the same seal thickness. The hybrid Omega block seal in crosscut 3 survived an explosion at a pressure loading of 25 psi and failed during another explosion at a pressure loading of 39 psi at the seal. Based on these tests, it seems that the hybrid seal design is weaker than the 2001 seal design. The Sago Omega block seals were constructed in crosscut 3 and C-drift before Test 3. The crosscut 3 seal survived a pressure loading of 18 psi and was destroyed during an explosion at a pressure loading of 35 psi at the seal. The C-drift seal survived a head-on explosion that resulted in a pressure loading of 21 psi and was destroyed during an explosion with a pressure loading of 57 psi at the seal. Based on these LLEM tests, it seems that the Sago seal design is weaker than the 2001 seal design, yet it still complied with the requirements of 30 CFR 75.335(a)(2) that were in effect at the time of the mine disaster. During these LLEM explosion tests, the distance of seal debris travel was also measured. In Test 5, the C-drift seal was destroyed during a head-on explosion that resulted in a pressure loading of 57 psi, and the seal debris was thrown over 500 ft. In Test 6, the C-drift seal was destroyed during a head-on explosion that resulted in a pressure loading of 93 psi, and the Omega block debris was thrown over 900 ft. During these tests, the explosion pressure effects on other structures and objects were also documented. Unless otherwise specified, all of the pressure data listed in this report represent the highest recorded smoothed (averaged over 10 ms) explosion pressure loadings. The information in this report was used by MSHA and WVOMHS&T as supporting data in their analyses and investigative reports of the Sago Mine explosion.

Strategy is about making choices. Mining companies choose to do certain things and not to do other things. Mining is a long-term business, and the choices made typically have large investments attached to them, long payback periods, and significant socio-economic consequences. In today’s uncertain world, it is important to make the right choices. The mining industry in South Africa finds itself in a difficult situation. Operating conditions are tough, the socio-political environment is complex, and financial performance is under pressure. The choices made by all the stakeholders in this industry in the short term will shape the future of the industry. This paper characterizes some of the big, difficult decisions faced by the mining industry in the South African context, and discusses how these decisions could be approached in a fact-based and robust way.

According to the data provided by the most recent European Survey on Working Conditions, roughly 25 per cent of the European working population is exposed to mechanical vibrations for no less than one quarter of the work shift duration, while around ten per cent are exposed for the entire work shift. The occupational exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV), in particular, represents a major health risk in mining, quarrying and civil excavation activities. In accordance with European Directive 2002/44/EC, the latest version of the Italian law on physical risks has recently confirmed the possibility of using relevant literature data on vibration magnitude in order to evaluate personal occupational exposure (vibration database or data provided by the manufacturer). Still the alternative option, based on field measurements, represents the most appropriated method of risk assessment, as it accounts for the actual operating condition at the workplace; actual operator and vehicle under investigation and specific working cycle. The article discusses the vibration measurements taken on a number of heavy machinery (excavators, loaders, trucks, dumpers, etc) employed for talc extraction in a mine located in Sardinia and the resulting personal exposure for the drivers. The assessment was carried out in accordance with the specifications of ISO 2631-1 and EN 14253.

The major waste product of the alkaline extraction of alumina from bauxite [Bayer Process] is known as red-mud. Approximately, a ton of red-mud is produced for every two tons of bauxite mined. The red-mud produced from Jamaican bauxite is rich in hematite, alumina and titanium oxide. It has been shown that over 90-wt. pct. alumina can be recovered from red-mud by soda-ash sintering and caustic leaching. Hematite can be carbothermically reduced with a degree of metallization of over 94 pct resulting in attempts for magnetic separation. These separations are desirable in the notion that there is no waste product generated from this type of processing and consequently an opportunity for complete utilization of the waste material. Conversely, the pre-separated material could be charged through the tuyeres in an iron blast furnace or smelted to produce pig iron. If smelted, the concentration of titanium oxide in the slag will be significantly high justifying its recovery by established acid-leach process. This paper describes the results of alumina recovery and the plans for titanium oxide recovery from red-mud. In addition, the situation of ongoing efforts in iron extraction, particularly, the method of magnetic separation of the reduced material. The problems associated with the use of reduced red-mud as an alternative to direct-reduced iron [DRI] has also been discussed. Critical assessment of the recovery sequence chosen for the products has been described based on economics.

The Mount Angelo prospect outcrops as two copper rich gossans, the larger of which is 250 ft long and 70 ftwide. The mineralization is epigenetic and replaces part of a brecciated and disturbed lime tone and calcareou sediment sequence.Magnetic and self potential survey indicated a substantial body of sulphide mineralization, the top of which was approximately 100 ft below the surface.Diamond drilling confirmed this and established the presence of a mineral body of at least 500,000 tons, extending to a depth of 300 ft. Of the 500,000 tons, 200,000 ton are primary copper ore which a ays 2 per cent copper.This mineral body is not economic at present, but could become economic if copper mining is established elsewhere in the district...

Ceveland-Cliffs uses a specialized software package in mine planning at the Empire Mine, an iron ore mine it manages on Michigan’s Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience that began in the early 1960s on the eastern end of the Marquette Range. The Empire Mine is in its 38th year of production. It uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low-grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short- and long-range planning.

ABSTRACT: Underground hydrocarbons storage is a very specific domain for the designer. He is usually free to adjust the section, shape and layout to cope with the geological and geotechnical conditions. This paper presents a panorama of the geotechnical design of mined underground storage caverns, then lists a number of uncommon features encountered in a storage excavated in Sydney, Australia, the Elgas LPG project that had to face major non-isotropic conditions with numerous local variations, impacting on the achievement of the design profiles. Changes in geotechnical design methodology and practice are examined through this project, now in operation, which will have lasted altogether almost ten years. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die untertaegige Speicherung von Kohlenwasserstoffen unterliegt in der Planung sehr spezifischen Bedingungen. Der planende Ingenieur hat bei der Dimensionierung und Formgebung der Speicherhohlraeume gewisse Freiheiten, muss jedoch vorgefundene geologische und geotechnische Bedingungen beruecksichtigen. Der vorliegende Beitrag gibt zunaechst einen allgemeinen Ueberblick ueber die geotechnische Planung von bergmaennisch aufgefahrenen Speicherhhohlraeumen. Darueber hinaus werden Besonderheiten betrachtet, mit denen das Elgas LPG-Speicherprojekt in einer bergmaennisch aufgefahrenen Kaverne in Sydney, Australien konfrontiert war. Hierbei ging es um die Beruecksichtigung anisotroper Bedingungen mit zusaetzlichen Heterogenitaeten im Gestein und den daraus erwachsenden Schwierigkeiten, die geplante Hohlraumform zu verwirklichen. Ueber einen Zeitraum von fast 10 Jahren, in denen das jetzt in Betrieb befindliche Projekt unterschiedliche Betriebsphasen durchlaufen hat, wurden verschiedene geotechnische Entwurfsverfahren auf ihre Anwendbarkeit geprueft. Anaconda initiated an extensive underground exploration and discovered a super gene copper blanket which was developed into a small open-pit mine-mill operation that ran from 1970 until the depletion of the copper ore in 1974. East West Minerals, an Australian public company, purchased the mine in 1986 and operated for only seven months producing a single bulk lead-zinc concentrate. In 1995, Breakwater acquired the Restigouche Open pit and Caribou underground deposits. Breakwater began milling operations in July 1997 but Caribou Mine failed to commercialize production, and the company decided to shut it down in August 1998, because of declining metal prices. The mill was plagued by mechanical and design problems, but deficiencies in metal recoveries prevented the operation from reaching desired levels."

THE " Munroe effect" of shaped explosive charges was discovered by Charles E. Munroe more than 50 years ago (in 1888), but it was not until World War II that it was put to any practical use. Both Allied and Axis armies used the principle effectively in bazooka projectiles, artillery projectiles and in fixed shaped charges. The first two were used primarily to combat tanks and other armor and the latter to assault pillboxes and other fixed concrete emplacements. Many engineers and others who saw the military application of the jet effect of shaped charges believed application would be possible in many industrial fields where blasting is used, such as mining and quarrying. Some work has already been done on the problem of making shaped charges applicable to mining operations. Experimentation conducted at the National Tunnel and Mines' was directed primarily along the lines of use of shaped charges for secondary blasting in connection with long-hole stoping methods. Experimentation initiated earlier and conducted by the author2 at the University of Utah on a more scientific basis was directed at revealing the basic principles of the functioning of shaped charges, as well as the feasibility of using them in mining operations after the principles of their operation had been clearly defined. It was found that: (I) a given design of charge required an optimum standoff to make it most effective, either in penetrating solid rock or steel (see Fig 3); (2) for a given design of charge there exists an optimum ratio of charge diameter to charge height above which the increase in effectiveness of the charge decreases rapidly (see Figs 4 and 5); (3) partial confinement has the effect of making charge performance much more consistent; (4) the higher power and higher velocity explosives tested are much more effective than relatively low-strength explosives; and (5) shaped charges may be adaptable to mining operations in secondary breakage and drilling blasting holes. Fig I is a diagrammatic sketch of the action of a shaped charge for two types of cavities, while Fig 2 shows the approximate manner in which the jets are believed to be formed when an explosive wave encounters the cavity, approaching it from the top. The experimentation already completed has laid the foundation for further research in the study of shaped charges. The mining industry is generally regarded as a high risk industry, mainly because of the difficulties in estimating the tonnage and grade of mineral resources, the fluctuations in metal prices, mining problems and other problems which occur with mining in offshore and remote locations, such as appropriation or disruption to supply. As a consequence, finance providers require a high reward from mining projects. In the past two decades, the development of "mega" projects has led to the packaging of the finance becoming more sophisticated. Some would see this move as a measure of the evolution of banking rather than an intrinsic facet of mining finance itself. Project financial managers now require a thorough knowledge of all the financial tools which are available and have to be aware of the funding options so that they can put together a finance package which minimises the cost of the financing with the risk spread adequately between the partners of the financing. The different sources and types of finance for mining projects are described herein along with the factors which determine their costs. To understand the ramifications of financing mining projects, it is essential to appreciate the fundamental difference between debt and equity, which illustrates the importance of gearing. Costs of finance are determined by the interaction of supply and demand forces. Bankers and other financiers have become more adept at isolating a wide selection of risk elements and have devised a formidable range of insurance mechanisms. There is still a lot of money looking for good project risks and if a good project is properly presented and structured, financing can be obtained in today's market.

The Belle Eldridge Mine is an inactive lead-zinc mine in Spruce Gulch south of Deadwood, South Dakota. Acidic mine drainage (AMD) produced at the site drains into Spruce Creek, a tributary of Whitewood Creek. The site is on U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. Extensive fieldwork was done at the Belle Eldridge Mine through the cooperation of the BLM and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The site was extensively mapped to identify physical and environmental hazards such as tailings, waste rock, collapsed buildings, adits and workings. An exhaustive search of the historical records of the Belle Eldridge Mine was conducted. Maps of the under-ground workings of the Belle Eldridge dating from the 1930’s and 1940’s were found. The maps were used to correlate currently collapsed features to old adits and tunnels. Using hand corers and a portable drill rig, waste rock, tailings and soil core samples were collected and depth to bedrock was determined and the total volume of waste and tailings pile were determined. Related work examined the hydrology of the site. The site is very complex hydrogeologically. Numerous underground and surface workings and tunnels add to the complexity. Several seeps are located at the site, one of which is producing AMD. Recharge to the site was studied, and a 100-year flood plain map was produced.

Some conceptions, particularly those regarding the necessity of depth, have been fairly well shattered, as we find that they are present in the water tunnels of New York, on the surface at marble quarries in Vermont, and in the coal mines of the United States, as well as in the deep mines of the South African and Kolar gold fields, and in the nickel, copper and gold mines of Canada. The widely accepted kinetic model for the gaseous reduction of hematite is critically examined. The formation of the wustite layer during internal reduction cannot be explained in terms of solid-state diffusion. Present evidence indicates the existence of a micropore system in the wustite adjacent to the magnetite with the gas/solid type of reaction occurring not only at the iron/wustite interface but also at the wustite/magnetite interface. During the partial reduction of dense hematite pellets, in a controlled atmosphere, porous magnetite and wustite are formed as products. The mean pore size, as measured by mercury injection, increases with time at constant temperature and with temperature increase over the range 6500C to 950°C. The sizes of the pores indicate that Knudsen diffusion is the principal gaseous transport mechanism across thick layers of magnetite or wustite.The kinetics of the gaseous reduction to iron are consistent with a mixed control mechanism involving the interaction of gaseous diffusion effects with a first order reversible chemical reaction at the iron/wustite interface. "The effect of reduction temperature on the vanadium titano-magnetite carbon composite pellets was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the discussion has put emphasis upon the enhanced reduction mechanism of additives containing CaF2 and NaF in this paper. The results showed that the reduction temperature of 1350°C was needed for the generation, mergence and growing up of metallic iron as well as monomer dissociation between metallic iron particles and slag phase in the vanadium titano-magnetite metallization pellets. The iron compound was completely reduced into metal iron, and Fe2Ti04 was mainly transformed into metal iron, (Fe,Mg)Ti205 and FeTi03 at 1350°C. The maximum metallization ratio was only 88.5% at 13500 for 30 min without any additive. However, with the addition of 3.0% CaF2 or NaF, the metallization degree of pellets could reach up to 94.8% and 92.5%, respectively.IntroductionVanadium titano-magnetite which is mainly distributed in the area of Panxi, Chengde and Maanshan in China is a kind of complex iron ore which contains various valuable metal elements such as iron, vanadium, titanium, etc. Among the above areas, Panzhihua (Sichuan Province in China) area possesses the largest deposits of vanadium titano-magnetite and the future reserves are more than 100x108t, and the reserves of Ti existing as Ti02 reach to 8.7x108t which occupy over 91% of the whole nation and ranked No.1 in the world[1]. Lots of researches on the comprehensive utilization of vanadium titano-magnetite have been conducted in the world. And many technological processes have been applied successfully in industrial production. Among these processes, the process of rotary kiln-electric furnace is employed to recover iron and vanadium in South-Africa, while the process of blast furnace-rotary furnace is widely used in Russia and China. Besides, many researchers have made efforts on employing new direct reduction process to realize the effective comprehensive utilization of vanadium titano-magnetite[2-4]. However, the direct reduction process is only researched in laboratory and it has not been used in industry."

The pile foundation of Sutong bridge pylons is an extra large pile foundation. The length of piles is 115m, and the diameter of the piles is 2.5-2.8m. Since the traditional design method may not determine the settlement and capacity reasonably for such a large pile foundation, the finite element method is used to study stress and deformation of the foundation. The interface element is set to simulate the possible slide between piles and soil layers. The hyperbolic model is taken for soils. Parameters are determined from triaxial test first, and then modified by back analysis on basis of in-situ loading test. The computation results show that the axial force of piles changes with the location of the pile. Outer piles support greater axial force and also friction. The settlement will not be greater than 26cm. The stress and deformation of the pile cap, the abutment, are obtained too. The whole foundation is safe.
