Permian coal seams from the Tomago Coal Measures in the Northern Coalfield, New South Wales, were analysed petrographically and reflectance measurements made for each. Vitrite contents were moderate to high for most of the coals but for two they were very low.The mineral-matter contents were low to moderate by Australian standards. Different profiles of a particular seam could be correlated by petrographic methods.Standard seam profiles were drawn up and from these an idealized Tomago seam sequence was compiled. All the coals were of high-volatile bituminous rank. Their carbon contents, but not thcir reflectances, varied significantly with the quantity of vitrinite present.

En ese sentido, el presente texto describe una manera de cuantificar dicha deformación a través del monitoreo de convergencias, donde se emplea un simple extensómetro de cinta manual y asímediante una análisis estadístico, seleccionar estaciones de convergencia por rangos de mediciones.

Natural gas has been used as a fuel and source of energy almost from its discovery, but its use as a chemical raw material may be said to have begun in 1918, when Brooks and Humphrey3/ showed. presence of alcohols in the diluted acid oil obtained by the sulfuric acid-treatment of cracked petroleum distillates. However, development of the utilization of natural gas for chemical syntheses was slow, partly because erroneous ideas existed regarding the nonreactivity of tine hydrocarbons composing natural gas. Data accumulated by petroleum chemists throughout the world, particularly since about 1930, have shown that these hydrocarbons will react when activated by the effects of heat, pressure, chemical reagents, and light; also that the reactions can be made to proceed of practicable speeds and to provide good yields of useful products with moderate operating conditions, especially if catalysts are employed. As those results became known, the possibility of a synthetic organic chemical industry based upon these reactions became apparent, and today this industry is large and growing rapidly in importance. In this paper the story of the manufacture of chemical products from natural gas is told simply in graphic form. The industry is developing so rapidly that soma products may have been omitted, but every effort has been made to include all that are important or likely to become so. The difficulty of keeping information of this tape up to date is shown by reference to an information circular4/ or, the sore subject published by the Bureau of Mines in 1930, in which the important products are shown on a single chart, where as five charts are employed for the cane purpose at present.

Herein, the coal-based reduction was proposed to utilize the ferronickel slag of Jingchuan company. An excellent index with metallization rate of 99.22%, iron grade of 77.91%, and iron recovery of 92.79% was obtained at carbon addition coefficient 2.0, reduction temperature 1573 K, reduction time 60 min, the particle size of coal and ferronickel slag − 2.0 mm, and CaO content 15%. The 2FeO·SiO2 was reduced to Fe and SiO2 with the increase of temperature. The CaO could promote the reduction of iron oxide. Most of the sulfides (Fe, Cu, Co, and Ni) in the sulfonium were reduced to metal. The reduction degree increased with the reduction time and reduction temperature. The higher reduction temperature represented the higher peak value of reduction rate and the shorter time of reaching the peak value. The isothermal reduction process included three stages: early stage, middle stage, and late stage. The mechanism function were f(α) = 1/2(1 − α)3, f(α) = 3/2(1 − α)4/3[(1 − α)−1/3 − 1]− 1, and f(α) = 4(1 − α)[− ln(1 − α)]3/4, respectively. The activation energy of three stages was 183.498 kJ·mol−1, 420.077 kJ·mol−1, and 656.619 kJ·mol−1, respectively.

It has been shown for an important class of complex transition intermetallic compounds (a, P, R, 6, and p phases) characterized by "normal" coordination [CN12 (icosahedral), CN14, CN15, CN16/ that interatomic distances nay be calculated to a good approximation as the sum of characteristic atomic radii. Two radii, one for major ligands and one for minor ligmds, are specified for each atom, except in the case of CN12 where only a miaaor-ligand radius is specified. The same appears to be true of transition-metal phases of simpler struc-ture: Laves phases (CN12, CN16), and p-tungsten phases (CN12, CN14). In the case of known examples of the more complex phases, a simple rule is given which specifies these radii. However, only a fraction of the known examples of the simpler phases obey this rule closely. To include the latter phases the rule may be modified by considering the radii as linear functions of the weighted average of the Pauling CN12 radii of the two kinds of atonzs, with the radii weighted according to the over-all chemical composition of the alloy. With very few exceptions interatomic distances for both tlze complex and the simpler transition phases can b$ predicted with this modified rule to within 0.06A. ManY intermetallic compounds are known of composition A,By, in which A is a transition element to the left of the manganese column in the periodic table and B is a transition element in or to the right of it. Frequently the coordination numbers (CN) found in these compounds are CN12 (icosahedral), CN14, CN15, and CN16 (called "normal" coordinations by Frank and Kasperl). Well-known examples are the cubic and hexagonal Laves phases which have CN12 and CN16, and the 0-tungsten (CrsO) phases which have CN12 and CN14. In the more complicated (often ternary) phases, such as the a phase,2 the Beck phases p3 and R~, the 6 phase,5 and the p p atoms occur with CN12, CN14, CN15, and (except for a) CN16; in many cases several crystallographically independent atoms of one particular CN occur in the asymmetric unit. A large number of independent interatomic distances are found in these complicated phases, varying from 20 in the a phase to 94 in the 6 phase. These distances show a large spread; they vary, for example, from 2.358 to 3.278A in the 6 phase. In our analysis of these distances we found that in each of these compounds every atomic position can be characterized by either one or two radii. The CN12 positions are characterized by a single radius, The higher coordinated positions are characterized by two radii, namely: the CN14 positions by 4 in the direction of the twelve "5-coordinated" ligands3 (called 'minor" by Frank and Kasperl) and by r:, in the direction of the two "6-coordi-nated" ligands (called "major" by Frank and Kasper); the CN15 positions by r15 for the twelve minor and r:, for the three major ligands; the CN16 positions by rlE for the twelve minor and r:, for the four major ligands. We have expressed the experimentally determined interatomic distances in observational equations as the sums of the appropriate pairs of these characteristic radii and the value of these radii have been determined by the method of least Squares. Despite their wide range, the interatomic distances could then be predicted by the sums of these atomic radii with an average deviation in any one compound of 0.06A or less. The results are summarized in Table I. Inspection of the radii thus obtained shows that in the structures in Table I the radii (in A) are given to a first approximation by the simple relationship: Where CN is the coordination number (12, 14, 15, or 16), and A = 1 for major ligands and = 0 for minor ligands. The interaLomic distances can be predicted within about 0.1A by sums of these atomic radii. Another phase belonging in this group with CN12, 14, 15, and 16 is the y phase & B7, in which A is molybdenum or tungsten and B is iron or cobalt. Recently the M%C phase has been refinedE and the observed distances also agree well with those calculated with Eq. [I]. (In the original determination of the structure of W6FeV7 the F$(II)-W(II1) distance was erroneously given as 2.84A, but we have recalculated it fro? the published parameters and found it to b? 2.57i4, in good agreement with the value of 2.6A predicted with Eq. Viscosity of multicomponent slags is one of the crucial physicochemical properties for many industrial processes and technologies. While the viscosity-temperature relationship of completely molten slags can well be described by an Arrhenian-type law, the compositional dependence of viscosity is still not fully understood, especially in compositional regions with the lack of experimental data (eg at the glass-former concentration of 90 molar per cent or higher). In the present work major compositional relationships of the activation energy of viscous flow have been revised for numerous binary and ternary slag systems on the basis of experimental data collected and stored in the viscosity database OxiVis. For example, it has been found that the activation energy relevant to the polymerisation effect in binary systems of the MO-GFO type, where MO is the modifier oxide (ie monovalent K2O, Na2O, Li2O and bivalent CaO, MgO, BaO, MnO, PbO etc) and GFO is the glass-forming oxide (SiO2 or B2O3) is not always proportional to the third power of XGFO (contrary to the Urbain formalism) and can vary significantly dependent on the slag system. Also, the activation energy of the charge compensation effect has been revised for ternary systems of the AO-MO-GFO and AO-MO type, where AO is the amphoteric oxide (Al2O3, Fe2O3 or other). A simple polynomial model has been proposed on the basis of the carried-out analysis for estimation of viscosities of multicomponent slag systems. The model has been optimised against the experimental viscosities in the selected binary, ternary, and higher-order oxide systems and has been shown reasonable agreement with the experimental data.

"In the paper a criterion for the evaluation of the sharing of the lateral loads in a piled foundation is presented. It relies on the the compatibility condition between the rotation of the rigid pile cap and the rotations of the pile heads, following in that the criterion suggested by the Eurocode 8 - Part 5. This assumption leads to an analytical solutions which allows to deal with the sharing of the lateral loads and moments by means of two main interaction parameters only. A sharing domain is also derived and it shows the role played by the eccentricity of the lateral load on the values of the axial forces and of the bending moments at the head of the piles.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the interaction among soil, piles and foundation is one of the most complex subject to deal with in Geotechnical Engineering. Its rigorous study needs to employ suitable finite element software nowadays available and able to take into account the non linear behavior of the soil as a continuum and the inelastic response of the structure. A deep insight to the topic of the sharing of the loads cannot obviously renounce to this approach.On the other hand it is a daily need of the designers to have at their disposal simple tools that allow to make preliminary evaluations of the basic equilibrium conditions. To this purpose many methods of analysis have been developed in the past to face the sharing of the loads in a simplified version. The present contribution follows this way trying however to introduce some improvements that leads to find a solution that satisfies both the equilibrium of the forces and the compatibility of the movements (Lenzi, Gambi, Olivucci, 2002). The proposed model allows to identify the basic parameters which govern the sharing of the lateral load and it allows to perform also parametric analysis and quick checks that may be useful in the design of the piles."

The Tolukuma gold-silver prospect is located approximately 100km N of Port Moresby in the Central Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Epithermal "adularia-sericite" style mineralisation crops out over 1200m within an en echelon quartz veined zone 1 to lOm wide. At a 4g/t cut-off grade, a geological resource of approximately 1.47Mt @ 13.77g/t Au is indicated from 38 diamond drill holes completed since discovery by Newmont Pty Ltd in September 1986. At a regional scale, Tolukuma miner- alisation appears localised in a dilatant zone at the intersection of a 1150 magnetic structure, and the western margin of a N-S trending graben which is filled by a Pliocene volcanic complex contemporaneous with the Mt Davidson Volcanics 30km to the W. A l0km diameter circular Landsat feature, which may reflect magma emplacement at depth, occurs immediately N of Tolukuma and nearby mineralisation. Mineralisation at Tolukuma occurs in sub-vertical quartz veins at, or adjacent to the faulted contact between Pliocene basic and intermediate volcanics/intrusives, and quartz mica schists and phyllites of the Cretaceous Kagi Metamorphics. Most veins display evidence of multiple episodes of brecciation and textures indicative of cyclic boiling, including crustiform rhythmic banding and quartz pseudomorphs after platy calcite.

In December of 2007, a joint venture of J.F Shea, Skanska and Schiavone referred to as S-3II, was awarded a $1.15 billion (? 886,880,000) contract to construct the run-ning tunnels and station structures for the Number 7 Line Extension Project in New York City by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction (MTACC) and New York City Transit (NYCT). As part of the contract, a technically complex and critical connection of the new tunnel to the existing, operational 7 Line subway was required. This paper describes the innovative design approach that was conceived to carry out the underpinning and excavation works both within the east-west 7 Line subway tunnel and beneath the north-south, 4 track, 2 level Times Square Station for the A, C & E trains. This underpinning provided temporary support to the subway substructure as the grade of the tunnel invert was lowered up to 10 feet (3 meters) into the rock sub-grade to allow the future subway to pass under the basement of the world?s busiest bus terminal. In addition, the creation of a new portal connecting the existing subway tunnel and the subterranean level of the Port Authority Bus Terminal by means of underpinning structural footings and horizontal spiling/poling of existing ground will be discussed.

Sooner or later the potential miner of industrial minerals reaches the conclusion that of the various factors he must consider, the marketing of his product is. the most important. The sooner he realizes this the better, as successful industrial mineral producers .will confirm. Herein lies a difference between i.ndustria1 mineral mining and metal mining. Often in the latter, technical problems of mining or concentrating are equal to or even surpass those of marketing. This is not meant to imply that there are no problems in mining and beneficiation of industrial minerals, but these usually are outweighed by the problem of marketing. Recentlv. an official of a nationally known corporation :i the elecl.ro-metallurgical industry made an industrial mineral survey in the Pacific Northwest. In the course of his investigation he interviewed producers and potential producers of the various industrial minerals scheduled for use in the plant now being constructed in this area. He stated that he was interested in only three factors: namely, (1) Can your product meet our specifications? (2) Are you able to supply our tonnage requirements? and (3) What will be the delivered price? If there are several sources of supply of sufficient grade and tonnage, as is often the case in the Northwest, then the third factor becomes the important and deciding one. While industrial minerals are usually sold f.0.b. cars with the freight being paid by the buyer, it is the delivered and riot the f.0.b. price that determines the competitive position of the producer and his industrial mineral product. Unfortunately for both the consumers and producers of industrial minerals in the Northwest, the sources are generally a considerable distance from the markets. This necessitates long rail hauls, for which transportation charges make up the largest share of the delivered cost and the delivered price of the product. Is it any wonder then, that rail rates play such an important part in the marketing of industrial minerals? In order to sell his product, the producer must be able to deliver to the market at a competitive price. It must be remembered that his largest cost factor is rail transportation, and that he is limited to markets that he can reach competitively. Since the cost of rail transportation is so important, let us compare various freight rates in the Northwest and attempt to determine their influence on marketing. A study of all rates on all industrial minerals transported in this area, is beyond the scope of this paper. For the purposes of comparison, let us consider limestone (broken, crushed, or ground), and silica rock. These are widely used industrial minerals, and are carried by several different rail routes from.the sources of supply to the centers of consumption in the Pacific Northwest. Markets and Sources of Supply: Limestone has a number of uses in western Oregon and Washington. Among them are agricultural lime for the soils of the Willamette Valley and southwestern Washington; paper rock for the mills in such cities as West Linn, Oregon City, Newberg, St. Helens, and Salem, Oregon, and Camas and Everett, Wash.; chemical and metallurgical-grade limestone for the metallurgical plants centering around Portland, and the Tacoma-Seattle areas'; and sugar rock for the sugar refineries at Toppenish, Wash., and Nyssa, Oregon. The magnetization curves for specimezs containing superparmagnetic particles are considered. It is shown that the curves may differ from a Langezlin function because of particle anisotropy, particle interactions , and the presence of a size distribution of particles. The various causes of particle anisotropy are considered, and magnetization curves for specimens with cubic and uniaxial anisotropy are presented. The magnetization curves depend on the In the particle-size below 100A it is quite difficult to obtain quantitative size and shape information on precipitate particles. All of the available techniques have their limitations; however, quantitative applications of superparmagnetism have not been developed as fully as possible due to a lack of analysis of the complete magnetization curve. With such an analysis it appears possible to obtain from a single magnetization curve of a specimen containing randomly oriented SPM (superparamagnetic) particles a quantitative volume distribution and a description of the particle shape.* sign of the anisotropy energy and in the case of a negative uniaxial anisotropy (prolate spheroids) the resulting curves may differ very considerbly from a Langevin function. A graphical technique is developed whereby it is possible to separate out the effects of the size distribution, the particle interaction, and the particle anisotropy. Thus it is possible to obtain quantitative values for both the particle shape and the size distribution. Langevin function2 I/Is = ctnh(HVIs/k T)-k T/HVIS [ 1 ] where I, is the saturation magnetization, V the particle volume, H the applied field, T the particle temperature, k the Boltzmann constant, and I the magnetization in the direction of the applied field. Such behavior is rarely if ever observed in actual systems. One explanation for this is that the SPM particles do possess a significant anisotropy and thus the magnetic energy associated with the particle depends on the direction of magnetization in a more complicated way than for the isotropic particle of Eq. [I]. In general the magnetic energy E of an isolated SPM particle embedded in a nonmagnetic matrix can be expressed as a sum of several contributions: E = Eh + Ed+Es+Ec [2] where Eh is the external field energy, Ed the energy resulting from the particle demagnetizing factor, E, the magnetostriction energy, and E, the crystalline anisotropy energy. In each term we consider only the part dependent on the orientation of the magnetization vector and the particle axes as the shape of the magnetization curve will be determined by these contributions. Os aços inoxidáveis são materiais utilizados em ramos da indústria que demandam além de boa resistência à corrosão, elevada resistência mecânica. As ligas inoxidáveis austeníticas geralmente são submetidas ao trabalho a frio visando seu endurecimento, uma vez que não são endurecíveis via tratamento térmico. Devido à deformação plástica, pode ocorrer a transformação da austenita em martensita para algumas classes de aços. Esta transformação, dependendo da fração de fase transformada pode levar à redução da tenacidade. O foco deste trabalho está, portanto, na identificação e quantificação da martensita em amostras deformadas. Para isto, corpos de prova de aço austenítico AISI 321 foram deformados mediante laminação a frio e caracterizados pelo magnetômetro de amostra vibrante (VSM) e pela técnica Bitter modificada ao ferrofluido. Os resultados exibiram a fácil formação de martensita no aço e uma abordagem muito eficaz para revelar esta fase nas imagens de microscopia ótica. Com os valores de saturação magnética provenientes do VSM foi possível estimar a fração volumétrica da martensita para cada condição de deformação.

Productivity and operating expenses are everything when it comes to judging how well your mine and company are doing. Stakeholders are always looking at these numbers and trying to understand if productivity is improving, if operating costs are trending downward and what you are basing your decisions on. o make improvements you first need to understand how you are performing. If you can?t get this basic information, you will never improve. You will not be able to make simple decisions related to maintenance, operations or production. Forget about planning, as you will only be guessing based on the numbers some stakeholder or your executive wants to see. The problem miners run into is not that the data doesn?t exist; it does, but typically it?s raw, it?s everywhere and its volume is huge. Today there is more on-board computing capability in shovels than we had on our desktops three years ago. Add other mobile equipment, plant systems and multiple OEM vendors to the equation and the challenge is daunting.

Assessments of the stability performance of open pit highwalls have traditionally been based on consideration of surface movement rates. Although generally accepted in industry, this approach presents challenges for establishing appropriate threshold values to allow for safe mining operations and does not address the issue of total strain. Surface movement monitoring data from a limited number of open pit mining operations in North and South America has been evaluated in terms of highwall strain, rock mass quality and inferred mechanism of instability. Threshold strain levels for key stages of highwall stability proposed from previous work have been reviewed and are generally endorsed based on evaluation of additional data. An empirical highwall strain criteria for the assessment of highwall stability performance is postulated based on the observed trends in highwall strain data from the case histories presented.

In the last 20 years, In Line Inspection (ILI) using intelligent pigs has become the principal tool used by pipeline operators to assess the condition of their pipelines. New pipelines are normally designed to take intelligent pigs, but many older pipelines require some modifications and special procedures for their inspection. This paper is aimed at practicing engineers and managers of pipelines, or people aspiring to those positions. The paper describes the benefits of ILI and some of the practical issues regarding pipeline preparation and cleaning, choice of inspection tool, running pigs in pipelines, and what to do with the data collected. What are the responsibilities of the Pipeline Engineer ? ? Maintain reliable and acceptable performance of the pipeline in terms of safety and product delivery at economical cost. ? Provide a defined margin of safety for operating the pipeline at its designated pressure. ? Provide timely information on all pipeline defects such that repairs can be carried out according to a managed schedule. What Defects does the Pipeline Operator have to cope with ? A useful record of actual incidents seen in pipelines can be obtained from the web site of the US Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS) - http://ops.dot.gov/stats/stats.htm. US pipeline Operators are obliged by Law to report all pipeline incidents exceeding certain threshold criteria (e.g loss of life, escape of product, cost of incident etc). These OPS statistics show that corrosion and third party damage have remained consistently the prime causes of reportable incidents in the US, with similar experience elsewhere. Esso-BHP have installed a production supervisory control system that is presently controlling the offshore oil and gas facilities on the Barracouta and Marlin platforms from an onshore master station. This control is achieved with a computerized master station onshore which uses a UHF radio system for telemetry and control.The system is designed to control, monitor, and gather data from a large number of oil and gas production platforms and has flexibility to handle future variations in operating conditions.The system will be extended to the Halibut platform late in 1970 and to the Kirlgfish platforms during 1971.

The cost of preparing a feasibility study is notoriously difficult to estimate. Studies for mining projects are typically commenced when an exploration programme has identified a mineable resource and pre-feasibility studies have shown that development of the resource would lead to an economically viable project. Pre-feasibility studies will normally include an estimate of the cost of a formal feasibility study and this estimate would then be firmed up before a commitment is made to proceed with the formal study. Data for preparing the feasibility study cost estimate will be sketchy, geological investigations, metallurgical testwork, and marketing studies may be needed before the scope of the project and hence the scope of the formal study can be finally determined. Before an estimate of the work required and hence of the cost of the feasibility study can be prepared the source of project funds must be decided. Studies for internally funded projects are often less rigorous than those which must be "bankable" and subject to the scrutiny of external financial institutions. This paper sets out suggestions for preparing more accurate cost estimates for feasibility studies by ensuring that all activities are included and shows how a staged approach to preparing such studies can minimise costs and guard against cost overruns. It also provides a case study showing how the estimate compared with actual costs for a recent feasibility study completed by Pancontinental Mining Limited.

En los arcos jurásico, paleoceno y oligo-mioceno ocurren pórfidos de distintas características, los cuales presentan diferencias litogeoquímicas (LaN/YbN>20, Sr/Y>40, Eu/Eu*>1, U/Th>0.27, NbN/TaN>0.7). Estos parámetros pueden ser utilizados como guías de exploración, ya que son anomalías desde el punto de vista litogeoquímico. En caso no haya mineralización visible (depósitos ocultos), el empleo de estos trazadores en unidades ígneas (diques, cuerpos subvolcánicos e intrusivos) puede señalar la probabilidad de encontrar depósitos en profundidad.

"SUMMARYThe K.M.A. reservoir was discovered to be oil bearing at a depth of 3,719 feet on March 11, 1931. Extensive development, however, was not begun immediately, because the discovery well had a low initial daily oil production, and market conditions for oil were unfavorable. Development of the field progressed slowly for the next 6 1/2 years. In the latter part of 1937, a wildcat well approximately 2 miles southwest of the discovery well was drilled on a magnetometer high and completed with an initial flowing production of 2,016 barrels of 43° A.P.I.-gravity oil in 12 hours. Rapid development of the southwestern part of the K.M.A. field was begun immediately and continued until over 700 wells were drilled and approximately 12,500 acres proved oil productive.Because of the large size of the entire K.M.A. field, this report is limited in scope to the southwestern part only, and the discussion that follows pertains to this area only. The closing date for production statistics is August 1, 1949.The K.M.A. structure is a complex anticline having a maximum closure of 250 feet, and the K.M.A. formation is composed of sediments that grade from limestone through sandy lime and limy sand to sandstone with thin streaks of shale. Two distinct members of the K.M.A. formation, zone I and zone II, are oil productive. Core analyses indicate the average porosity to be 16.5 percent for zone I and 16.1 percent for zone II. A relationship was established from core data, which showed the correlative permeabilities to be 42.1 millidarcys for zone I and 39.5 millidarcys for zone II, whereas the arithmetical averages of the permeabilities were 84 millidarcys for zone I and 216 millidarcys for zone II. Connate water saturations were 17.5 percent for zone I and 20.0 percent for zone II. The porosity-saturation method, using a thickness-correction factor, was employed to calculate the volume c 168.1 million barrels of stock-tank oil initially in place in the reservoir. Analyses of the reservoir oilIn that, although the initial reservoir pressure was 1,750 p.s.i., the original reservoir oil was saturated to only 1,300 at which pressure 1 barrel of stock,tank oil contained 525 cubic feet of gas in solution.A serious decline in reservoir pressure during the 2 years of rapid development alarmed the operators and caused them to consider a cooperative pressure-maintenance program. In the latter part of 1939, the K.M.A. Pressure Maintenance Association was organized, and the gasoline plants in the field agreed to process the wet gas and return the dry gas to leases having gas-injection wells. Approximately 27 percent of the cumulative volume of produced gas had been returned to the reservoir by August 1, 1949."
