A theoretical and experimental ana1ysis is given of the change in volume of a porous medium due to changes in external and internal pressures. The result enable one to deduce directly the effect of large increlents in stresses. It is shown that the three-dimensional representation of the volume of a nonlinear porous system is a cylindrical rules surface, the generating lines of Which have a slope according to the solid rock compressibility. Analytical expression for such a ,surface is very simple. It follows that the bulk and pore compressihilities depend only on the difference between pore fluid and external hydrostatic pressure, i.e., the effective rock frame pressure. From measurements on a number of sandstones as well as limestones it can be conduded that for practical values of this effective frame pressure the pore compressibility falls in the range between the compressibility of water and that of undersaturated crude oil. In general, pore compressibility is found to be higher the lower the porosity. For a particular limestone reservoir pore compressibility and porosity could he related by means of a simple empirical formula. Results from the described study find a direct applicxtion in material balance calculations and in prob1ems of liquid flow through porous media. Since the elastic constants of the rock bulk material enter into equatiorls for velocity of acoustic waves, the results are also of importance for calculating rates of wave propagation in these media. It is shown for sandstones with 1.5 to -10 prr cent porosity that laboratory measured porosities may differ from those lender reservoir conditions by about I per cent of their value. The difference for low porosity limestotnes can be of the order of 10 per cent. The subsidence caused by elastic deformation of reservoir rock is shown to he very small. General formulas relating pore and bulk volume to external and internal pressure can be derived, as has been shown by Biot1, Gassmann2 and Geertsma.2 Their theories describe the differential change in volume caused by a variation in pore fluid tension and external hydrostatic tension. It has been known for a long timei that the stress-strain relations of a packing of spheres are essentially noninear. Our experiments show that for almost all reservoir rocks which arc elastically deformable the relation between volume and loading is also a nonlinear one, resembling that of a packing of spheres very closely. The behavior of these media is often described by using the linear stress-strain relations for small incremental stresses and strains in the vicinity of a pre-stressed condition." The present study differs from these considerations in that it enables one to deduce the effect of large increments in the stresses directly. In analogy to the stress tensor for a homogeneous body the stress tensor for a porous body can be written in the conventional way: where the tensor components, o, and t, represent the total forces acting on the faces of a unit cube of porous material. This tensor can be split into two parts. a hydrostatic and a deviatoric part, as follows2,3,1 where the component of the hydrostatic stress system, a. equals The hydrostatic stress causes a change in volume whereas the deviatoric stress system gives rise to a change in shape only. One of the difficulties in describing changes of volume occurring in reservoir rocks is that the relations connecting these volume changes with external and internal stresses are essentially non-linear. A complete description requires the bulk volume, V,,, as well as the pore volume,V,,. to be known as a function of both the changes in pore fluid tension (v) and the hydrostatic tension on the outer boundary.

From the measurement of internal-oxidation band widths in Ag-In and Cu-A1 alloys, products for the solubility No and the diffusivity Do of oxygen in silver and apparent NODo products in copper have been obtained over a range of temperature. The NODO products for silver are in agreement with the product of the individually determined No and Do values of Eichenauer and Müller. Although interstitial diffusion of oxygen in silver is expected, the temperature-independent factor Do of the diffusion coefficient does not agree well with the theory of Wert and Zener. For Cu-A1 alloys internal oxidation does not follow the expression derived for ideal kinetics, since the apparent NODo product calculated from internal-oxidation measurements is a function of the alloy content in the specimen. Thus, unequivocal values for No or DO or even the product NODO in copper are not available from the literature. RELIABLE values for the saturation solubility NO and diffusivity DO of oxygen in fcc metals are lacking and difficult to determine, partially because internal-friction measurements are not applicable. Permeability experiments and Sieverts7-type adsorption -desorption methods3 have met with difficulty; however, Eichenauer and Müller4 have recently reported on the solubility and diffusivity of oxygen in silver as determined by the latter technique . Rhines, Johnson, and Anderson,5 and independently Meijering and Druyvesteyn,' introduced the possibility of deriving values for the product NODO in a metal from measurements of the widths of internal-oxidation zones (subscales) formed during the internal oxidation of alloys. In addition to these authors, several other investigators7-9 have made such measurements in various silver and copper alloys at various temperatures, mostly using me- chanically polished specimen surfaces. The purpose of this investigation was to determine over a range of temperature the calculated products NODO in silver and copper from systematic measurements of the widths of internally oxidized zones in Ag-In and Cu-A1 alloys, using specimens with electro-etched surfaces. Consider the internal oxidation of a dilute solid-solution alloy in which the base metal is not oxidized. If diffusion of oxygen is the rate-controlling step, then the depth 5 of the internal-oxidation zone is given by where y is a dimensionless parameter and t the oxidation time. Based on the solution of the diffusion equation, wagnerl0 has shown that under certain conditions several mathematical simplifications may be used in the evaluation of y, so that Eq. [I] may be expressed for the case that y « 1, and y(Do/DB) 1, where N(so)the is the equilibrium solubility (mole fraction) of oxygen in the solvent metal for the given oxidizing atmosphere, is the mole fraction of the solute metal in the bulk alloy, 4 is the diffusivity of the solute in the base metal, and v is the ratio of oxygen atoms to solute atoms in the precipitated oxide BO,. Rearranging Eq. [2] Maak' has derived an expression analogous to Eq. [3] for the case that an external-oxide scale, in addition to an internal-oxidation zone, is formed. For this combined external and internal oxidation for the case that 5/2 where 5 is the distance of the internal-oxidation front from the original external s.urface, and X is the distance of the external oxide/metal interface from the original external interface. "THE mineral industry is constantly undergoing changes and facing challenges, and today we are in the midst of another serious one -namely, manpower requirement at every level in the mines, shops and plants. In the not too distant past we had a situation where labour was plentiful, although the equipment, by present-day standards, was quite inadequate, and that's easily understandable when you look back at the primitive methods by which our Western mines were first developed and operated, and then improved by the inventiveness and ingenuity of man.I'd like to show you a few slides from drawings made by Buck O'-Donnell which illustrate some of yesterday's methods of mining. Some of you probably had first-hand experience with some of these so you know they were tedious, time-consuming and involved a lot of heavy labour.Taking the Anaconda Company operations at Butte as an example, we can see what has happened in just the past ten years. In August of 1956, the Butte mines had 5,516 day's-pay employees and 976 salaried employees, for a total payroll of 6,492. In August of this year, there were 3,645 day's-pay employees and 605 on the salaried roll, for a total of 4,250. The number of contract miners had gone from 1,347 in 1956 to 606 in 1966 and that of other underground miners from 2,893 ten years ago to 1,149 this year. Along with these changes, however, another change of special significance has taken place, and that is in the number of skilled craftsmen, surface engineers and so on required for our operations. In 1966, we had 1,890 of these people, 600 more than in 1956 and nearly three times as many as just twenty years ago."

"The Harricana-Turgeon belt (HTB) is a poorly known volcano sedimentary belt in the NW part of the Abitibi Sub-province; it includes the Matagami, Joutel, Brouillan and Casa-Berardi mining districts. The HTB is dominated by volcanic rocks, which covers 65% of its surface area, followed by sedimentary (18%) and plutonic (17%) rocks. It is also transected by numerous deformation zones located either at the contacts of volcano-sedimentary units and granitoid bodies or cross-cutting them. A preliminary geological synthesis shows that mineral deposits are associated with certain regional geologic elements.The volcano-sedimentary units are grouped here into twelve band-shaped lithotectonic domains, most of which extend for more than 150 km E-Win the HTB. Each domain is defined by lithologies and facies associations, and gradiometric and electromagnetic signatures.Eight domains are composed of basaltic or basaltic to komatiitic associations, interlayered with thin pelagic sediments, representing sub-marine lava plains. Two domains are composed of basaltic to rhyolitic associations that are interpreted as volcanic arcs formed by one or several central volcanic complexes.The sedimentary rocks are grouped into two lithotectonic domains. Each is composed of rhythmic sequences of turbiditic sandstone- siltstone-shale, Algoma-type banded iron formations and conglomerates bearing plutonic and volcanic pebbles. These three facies come partly from mass flow at the bottom of a slope in a moderately deep marine environment. In each domain, a conglomerate sandstone- siltstone sequence, containing poly genetic pebbles of local provenance, is similar to Timiskaming-type alluvial deposits.The nineteen granitoids, found within the HTB and at its border, belong to numerous petrographic suites, and have been grouped into four structural families: pre-tectonic, pre- to early-tectonic, syn- to late-tectonic, and late- to post- tectonic. The pre- to early-tectonic plutons are presumed to be sub-volcanic and are generaly associated with the volcanism of central complexes.The HTB mineral resources consist essentially of polymetallic (Cu-Zn-Ag-Au) and gold (Au-Ag) deposits. The polymetallic deposits are located exclusively in the two lithotectonic domains composed of basaltic to rhyolitic associations (Matagami-Brouillan and Joutel Raymond). All gold deposits are associated with deformation zones superimposed on lithotectonic domain contacts and highlighted by graphitic units. Most of the deposits are hosted in the Casa-Berardi and Douay deformationzones, located at the contact of the Cartwright basaltic to komatiitic domain and the Taibi sedimentary domain"

The use of the Scanning Electron Microscope to characterize Coal Mine Dust has been possible because of two circumstances. First, the imaging process of the SEM allows multiple signals (secondary electrons, back scattered electrons, x-ray emission, etc.) to be viewed. Second, the use of a computer to analyze the signals and perform statistical tests on the results. The parameters described are size, shape, chemical composition, mass distributions, and particle thickness. Although the system is intended for particular systems, those of agglomerates (whether tile same or not) are handled by special aspects of the computer programs. The work on fibers is not completed at the time of this report. This work discusses the hardware (developed especially for this process) and software (both on an IBM 360/370 and a PDP 11/20). The latter system allows direct interaction between the operator of the SEM and computer for maximum information at the least time.

THE state of Kansas had a daily average crude-oil production of about 87,000 bbl. at the beginning of the year. This showed a steady but consistent decline during the 12 months, so that the daily average production at the end of the year was slightly over 68,000 barrels. GREENWOOD COUNTY THE most active development in Kansas during the year was in Greenwood County, in a line from near Sallyards in T 25-R 9 to east of Madison in T 22-R 11. The main part of this development has been in a succession of pools beginning at the south with the Polhamus pool in 34-24-9 and 3 and 4-25-9; Thrall pool in 28, 29, 32 and 33-23-10; Burkett pool in 13, 23, 24 and 26-23-10; Seeley and Wick pool in 22, 27, 28,. 32 and 33-22-11 and 5, 6, 7, and 8-23-11; Frohm pool in 11, 14 and 15-22-11; Madison pool in 31 and 32-21-12 and 6, 22, 12 and 1-22-11. Some of these pools have two or more sands, locally called Bartlesville and Burgess Sands. They range in depth from 1850 ft. near Madison to 2450 ft. near Sallyards, the general dip being to' the west. The thickness of these sands run from 20 to 100 ft., the initial production of the wells being 50 to 1000 bbl of 40-gravity oil or better.

This paper reports a biogeochemical study of the Siberia lode of the Herberton tin field. Soil near the orebody contained high levels of Fe, Cu, Pb, Sn, As, Mld Mn. Polycarpaea spirostylis and Indigofera dominii were associated with these high levels but several other species apparently could not tolerate them. The potential of these species as indicator plants is discussed.

[Asphalt and road oil are the principal products manufactured from Wyoming ?clack oils? which, because of their high asphalt an high sulfur content, are difficult and costly to refine into high-grade motor fuels, burning oils, and lubricants by pre sent methods. Accordingly, the remand for these asphaltic residuums for the construction of roads and other uses is a controlling- factor in the quantity of crude oil produced. The increasing utilization of special asphalts as inexpensive bonding, insulating, and waterproofing materials indicates the desirability of obtaining information on the yield and properties, of asphalts from Wyoming black oil to promote a wider and more stable caret for these asphaltic materials.]

The paper is a general review of practice in design of sub-level open stopes in Northern Rhodesian copper mines and gives examples of some interesting developments during the last five or six years. It discusses the effect of hangingwall subsidence and the methods used to combat rock pressure on working areas.INTRODUCTIONAll producing mines on the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt have large ore reserves and are designed for high rates of production. The three mines (Mufulira, Rhokana Corporation, and Roan Antelope) where sub-level open stoping is used, hoist from 250,000 to over 400,000 short tons of ore a month so that any stoping method used must be adaptable to concentrated' mining. Keywords: Anglo American, Anglo Platinum Ltd, Waterval, Mortimer, Polokwane, ACP, pyrometallurgy, platinum, PGMs Anglo Platinum Ltd is the largest primary platinum producer in the world and operates three smelters in South Africa: Waterval, Mortimer and Polokwane. The operational details of the smelters are covered in previous reviews, thus only unit operations that have been upgraded are discussed. The most significant of the upgrades include the installation of a second ACP converter at Waterval Smelter in 2006 and the anticipated upgrade of Mortimer Smelter to 38MW in 2011. Several advances have been made in the smelting operations to improve the furnace stability and longevity. Control of the chromium input to each of the smelters has substantially allowed continued operations at levels below the spinel saturation point in slag, which results in lowered matte and slag temperatures. Mogalakwena concentrate, arising from the Platreef ore, is used to dilute high chromium-containing concentrates. In addition, furnace controls have improved in terms of crucible temperature and condition monitoring, improved feeding control, management of alarms and trips and having the quality of instrumentation and operational rigour required to support this. Advances have been made on the ACP converter in terms of good converter matte quality, and increased intensity and efficiency of operation. Combined with improvements to both the conventional and tower sulfuric acid plants, the emissions from Waterval Smelter have been reduced substantially since the introduction of the ACP. This is in spite of increasing metal throughput. The Anglo Platinum Ltd smelting operations have made significant progress since 2006 and further advances are envisaged to further improve on safety, reduce costs, increase efficiencies and throughput, while reducing emissions.

In referring to two subjects of interest to the Members of this Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, I would at the outset desire to express our gratification that to-day we are able to welcome as now united with ourselves, those members who until recently constituted the New Zealand Institute. It is hoped that the amalgamation so amicably arranged may be productive of the best results to all concerned, incorporated as this combination has been at the moment of the fulfilment of that greater political union, the Australian Commonwealth.Since last Annual Meeting held in Brisbane, we have come under the same roof as the Chamber of Mines of Victoria, and we entertain the hope that as that Chamber and this Institute possess so many interests in common in the encouragement and advancement of mining and metallurgical progress in these colonies, that much mutual benefit will ensue. There are many directions in which each body can assist the other, and I trust that a friendly co-operation will be maintained.It is gratifying to feel that in all the colonies a distinct movement is being made to increase the facilities for education in Mining and Metallurgy but if I may refer to our colony of Victoria in particular, we have to express the profound regret that in the means of education in the higher branches, we occupy an inferior position, and it is quite certain that we will continue to do so unless the Government is prepared to subordinate provincial considerations to the weightier.

In 2016 at Głogów Copper Smelter KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., after shutting down the shaft furnaces new FSF was launched. Currently, it is the only smelter with two direct to blister flash smelting furnaces in operation. The main difference between the vessels are the dimensions and production capacity. The new furnace design output is about 30% higher compared to the old flash smelting furnace working for 40 years. The paper presents a comparison of both FSFs operation, differences in technology and the way to optimize the process to maximize efficiency. INTRODUCTION KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. is the only company in Poland (eastern part of Europe) that extracts and processes copper ores. It is located in the south west of Poland and this region is called the "Copper Basin”. KGHM PM S.A. consists of three underground mines: Lubin, Polkowice-Sieroszowice, Rudna, concentrator plants, a tailings pond plant, three copper plants: Legnica, Głogów and Cedynia wire rod plant in Orsk. The publication relates to the operation of the furnaces in Głogów (the plant in Głogów consists of Głogów 1 and Głogów 2 which form integrated smelting and refining facilities). In 2016, after closure of the shaft furnaces technologies in the Głogów 1, a new FSF commenced operation. The simplified process flow sheets are given in Figure 1 and 2. Technological schemes are similar, but due to the differences in them, they will be discussed separately. Głogów 1 Enriched ores are discharged and directed to the feed preparation plant. Delivered concentrates are built up on the three bedding aisles in appropriate proportions. The concentrates are distributed in even layers in one of the three aisles. Aisle emptying is done with a blending machine which cuts across the concentrate layers and collects thus blended material, sending it via belt conveyors to a storage bin. From the cross- blending machine and conveyor assembly, the mixture of concentrates is directed to drying in the steam dryer. Part of the charge is directed to the FSF and part to the roaster for carbon elimination. Known in the world roasters are used to eliminate sulfur compounds or arsenic. In the case of KGHM deposits, the aim of the process is to reduce the energy value of the feed by eliminating carbon and converting sulfur from sulfide to sulfate. Changing the nature of exothermic to endothermic material is crucial in the case of furnace operation with design performance. Roaster is a separate furnace with an innovative character.

Os aços utilizados na fabricação do vergalhão CA50 conforme norma NBR7480 são usados em todo o Brasil. A grande aplicação deste tipo de produto é na indústria de construção civil em função de sua excelente resistência mecânica e soldabilidade. Estas características permitem o avanço na construção de grandes empreendimentos. Em 2009, a Votorantim Siderurgia na sua Unidade de Resende, iniciou a produção do vergalhão CA50 em escala, procurando aumentar a sua participação no mercado de construção civil. Foi identificada uma grande variação nos resultados de limite de escoamento nos ensaios de liberação de produto realizados a partir de amostras coletadas no início das bobinas de vergalhão CA50. Em função disso, foi feita a caracterização do limite de escoamento e microestrutura ao longo da bobina onde foi identificado que esta grande variação do limite de escoamento estava presente em toda a bobina. Desta forma, foram definidos os principais parâmetros do processo de laminação que poderiam estar influenciando na variação do limite de escoamento e realizado um planejamento de experimentos (DOE) para o vergalhão CA50 16,0mm, aço 1030, onde foram identificadas que a combinação da melhor distribuição da vazão de água nas Caixas d’água utilizadas no tratamento térmico de têmpera e auto revenido, somada à maior distribuição das espiras no pelo Formador e à ventilação do Stelmor no mínimo apresentaram resultados de limite de escoamento acima do mínimo especificado pela norma NBR 7480 com menor desvio padrão quando comparado aos parâmetros de processo que eram utilizados na produção do vergalhão CA50.

Rio Algom Limited has mined uranium at Elliot Lake, Ontario for 20 years. The production of this energy-generating element results in the need to dispose of low-level radioactive solid wastes and liquid effluents. Because of the wet-temperate climate at Elliot Lake, the liquid effluents are of particular importance. Radium-226 is the isotope which requires most attention, and the current practice for its control is by addition of barium chloride and retention of the resultant precipitates in large settling ponds. Analyses of typical effluents and waste streams are discussed and typical levels of radium-226, thorium-230, thorium-232, thorium-228, lead-2iO, polonium-2iO, and uranium isotopes are presented.

Traditional, calcium compounds cannot be used in vanadium extraction processing due to the limitation of sodium roasting technology, which results in unsatisfied dephosphorization for vanadium-containing hot metal in converter and thus increasing the dephosphorization burden for subsequent steelmaking. The calcium roasting technology is an alternative for vanadium extraction and allows adding lime into vanadium slag in converter. In the present study, vanadium was leached by soda from roasted vanadium slag with high calcium content. Effects of roasting temperature and time, leaching temperature, Na2CO3 concentration andliquid to solid ratio on vanadium leaching rate were studied. The results show that 94% of vanadium was extracted by roasting the vanadium slag at 950℃ for 2.5h and then leaching in 160g/L Na2CO3 liquid at 95℃ for 1h with liquid to solid ratio of 10:1 ml/g. Impurities of Si and P reacted with calcium and formed insoluble Ca2SiO4 and Ca3(PO4)2 respectively.

"Zinc is the fourth most widely used metal in the world after iron, aluminum and copper. The primary zinc production is through flotation of zinc concentrate, roasting, leaching and electrowinning. Close to 60% of the metal produced is consumed in galvanizing the steel by making a thin layer of zinc coating on the steel surface by hot dip galvanizing. Process Research ORTECH Inc. has developed an efficient energy-saving sustainable technology for the recovery of zinc from secondary sources such as galvanized steel scrap, dross, dusts etc. The process consists of treating the zinc containing scrap in an alkaline solution to remove the zinc and thereby producing a zinc free steel scrap for recycle. The zinc containing leach liquor is subjected to a solvent extraction process to recover value added zinc oxide as the final product. In this paper, important industrial processes for the recycling of zinc including the PRO process will be discussed. BACKGROUNDZinc is the fourth most widely used metal in the world after iron, aluminum and copper. Global refined zinc output increased by 2.7 per cent to 13.16 million tonnes in 2011 and is expected to increase by an additional 2.4 per cent to 13.48 million tonnes in 2012 [1]. The primary zinc production is through flotation of zinc concentrate, roasting, leaching and electrowinning. Close to 60% of the metal produced is consumed in galvanizing steel by making a thin layer of zinc coating on the steel surface by hot dip galvanizing. Other major usages of zinc are in the production of brass and bronze, die casting and zinc-air batteries. The additional demand for zinc could come from its addition to fertilizers to increase crop yield.While the demand for zinc is increasing, many mines are scheduled to close in near future after being depleted of ore. The mines set to close between now and 2015 are Teck Resources’ Red Dog Mine in Alaska, Minmetals’ Century Mine in Australia and Vedanta Resource’s Skorpion Mine in Namibia [1]. The depletion of resources due to continued use and exploitation is becoming a great concern for the zinc industry. As a result, the sustainability of natural resources for continued societal care has become extremely important. Resource conservation and recovery by recycling with minimal environmental impact is a key element for sustainable development. In this paper, important industrial processes for the recycling of zinc including the PRO process are presented."

A program to investigate the effects of hardened washers on the uniformity of roof bolt tension and the resulting ground control in an underground mine was carried out. The complete roof bolt installation and roof bolt loads, mine convergence, and bed separation were monitored for a period of five months. The results show no evidence to support or refute the theory that mechanical roof bolts offer better support when they are installed with a high uniformity of tension. Also shown is the fact that if the bolts are installed with a maximum deviation from the mean torque of ±15% the addition of hardened washers significantly improved the uniformity of the installed tensions in the roof bolts.

Computer programers are often required to make modifications to unfamiliar Fortran routines. This Bureau of Mines report describes a computer program designed to aid the programer in such a situation by reorganizing: Fortran routines. This reorganization includes a sequential renumbering of the routine's statement numbers, a sequential renumbering, and relocation of format statements, an alphanumeric reordering of dimensioned and typed variables, a uniform pattern of text spacing, and a sequential numbering of the records in the final Fortran routine. The computer program has been extensively tested by the author and has proved to be a valuable tool for reorganizing Fortran routines developed under contract and later utilized by the Bureau, and for preparing routines for publication.

Este sistema comprende dos tipos de inyección: mantenimiento de presión y circulación, cuya ventaja radica en la estabilización de la producción, elimina el tiempo para agotar el reservorio, reduce los costos de producción, y permite un mayor rendimiento de la gasolina natural.

R. T. Hukki has extended his study of ball mill grinding at supercritical speeds with an excellent mathematical analysis of tumbling mill grinding. When he speaks of supercritical speeds he is referring to the original Fahrenwald critical-speed formula. He said that, as an example of the use of supercritical speeds, if a fine grinding mill of any type is wet-grinding ore of 3.5 sp gr with steel balls at a certain conventional subcritical speed, the same power input and capacity should be obtainable with autogenous medium of 3.5 sp gr at a speed 100 to 120 pct of the critical in a grate- type mill of the same effective size. In addition, he introduced what he calls the base mill concept which, he stated, makes it possible to compare performances of mills of different sizes grinding with a metallic medium or with an autogenous medium of any specific gravity and at any speed. He showed the use of this concept and explained how it makes possible the evaluation of mill sizes and motors for any grinding purpose at any accuracy well within the conventional standards of design in milling practice. He further stated that the maximum capacity in pilot plant mills with various media, either metallic or autogenous, has always been found to be within the supercritical speed range. In his discussion of this paper he substantiated these findings with statements showing the increased capacity obtained in a milling plant in Finland which followed his principles.
