In the extractive industry the term ‘continuous improvement’ (CI) usually means procurement of the latest state of the art equipment. This is generally perceived as the only way to add further value to the supply chain, with the driving philosophy of increased tonnage to dilute operational costs. However, not all market places can facilitate this approach. RJB lives in a fiercely competitive market and has targeted the standard efficiency drivers of rationalisation and stock management with a vengeance; and also operate CMMS (Computer Maintenance Management System), RCM (Routine Condition Monitoring)and CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) methodologies. Ultimately though, these systems are only as good as the people who operate and manage them and to add further value without procurement, people must be re-introduced back into the operation. Through TPM (Total Productive Mining), that is what RJB have set out to do.

Mineral deposits in New Zealand whose origin can be ascribed to primary magmatic segregations are associated with mafic-ultramafic complexes related to two orogenic episodes which took place during Palaeozoic and Mesozoic times. These mafic-ultramafic complexes are essentially of two types. One is ophiolitic and has podiform chromite mineralisation presumably formed below a spreading ridge. The other type occurs as intraplate layered intrusions in which Fe-Cu-Ni sulphides and Fe-Ti-V oxides have formed as a result of liquid immiscibility with the host magma, and have subsequently accumulated by gravity means. Generalised descriptions are given for some deposits in NW Nelson, Fiordland and Marlborough districts.

ANFO was being used as one of the blasting agents on a construction site in New England. Groundwater was encountered in numerous blast holes. The blasting contractor was employing typical explosives loading procedures for wet conditions. An abutter to the project complained that blasting caused her well water to have an odd taste and smell. Through testing, it was determined that there were hydrocarbons and nitrates in the well water. Several days later a second neighbor complained of foul tasting water; again it was determined that hydrocarbons and nitrates were present.

The seepage forces generated around pressurized water tunnels in rock are investigated using the analysis tools of geomechanics. The theoretical background of the two-phase material behavior is explained and the equations of motion and continuity are presented. Applications on two case studies typically occurring in practice deal with the required minimum rock cover for a pressurized tunnel and the separation between two tunnels carrying different heads. The rock mass behavior as described by the Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown material models is investigated by numerical analyses and the results are compared. The effect of key material parameters on the safety factors and the associated modes of failure is discussed.

Welina mai to the 40th Underwater Mining Institute, UMI 2011 - Marine Minerals: Recent Innovations in Technology. Since the first conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1970, the UMI Founder Professor Robby Moore always insisted on actively seeking the participation of industry, academia, and government. History has proven the wisdom of this approach, which is probably the key to its survival for so many years. The UMI is very much influenced by the cyclical pressures of the minerals commodity markets. When minerals demand and prices are rising rapidly, industrial participation in the Institute dominates the agenda, and participants share optimistic and aggressive views of the commercial prospects of the day. When metals prices are falling and world economies lethargic, academic experts continue to provide guidance and breakthroughs in the concepts and practices of exploration, technology, and environmental protection. Throughout the ups and downs, government participants provide a stabilizing force with conservative and environmentally sensitive policy statements, patient development efforts with long-term objectives, authoritative resource assessments and, sometimes, much needed regulatory clarity.

In the early 1970s, it became a concern that exposure to the mineral fibers associated taconite ore processed in Silver Bay, Minnesota would cause asbestos-related disease including gastrointestinal cancer. At that time data gaps existed which have now been significantly reduced by further research. To further our understanding of the types of airborne fibers in Silver Bay we undertook a geological survey of their source the Peter Mitchell Pit, and found that there are no primary asbestos minerals at a detectable level. However we identified two non-asbestos types of fibrous minerals in very limited geological locales. Air sampling useful for risk assessment was done to determine the type, concentrations and size distribution of the population of airborne fibers around Silver Bay. Approximately 80% of the airborne fibers have elemental compositions consistent with cummingtonite-grunerite and the remaining 20% have elemental compositions in the tremolite-actinolite series. The mean airborne concentration of both fiber types is less than 0.00014 fibers per milliliter that is within the background level reported by the World Health Organization. We calculate the risk of asbestos-related mesothelioma and lung cancer using a variety of different pessimistic assumptions. (i) that all the non-asbestos fibers are as potent as asbestos fibers used in the EPA-IRIS listing for asbestos; with a calculated risk of asbestos-related cancer for environmental exposure at Silver Bay of 1 excess cancer in 28,500 lifetimes (or 35 excess cancers per 1,000,000 lifetimes) and secondly that taconite associated fibers are as potent as chrysotile the least potent form of asbestos. The calculated risk is less than 0.77 excess cancer case in 1,000,000 lifetimes. Finally, we briefly review the epidemiology studies of grunerite asbestos (amosite) focusing on the exposure conditions associated with increased risk of human mesothelioma. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. Volume I of this report described the demonstration of cross-ridge mountaintop coal mining. This document, Volume II, is intended for use as a supporting document to Volume I. This report describes the MATHMINE Mine Simulation System, a modularized software system used to support the demonstration of cross-ridge Mountaintop coal mining. The MATHMINE Mine Simulation System was used to generate mine plans for coal extraction at lowest cost. The functional details, data requirements and output of the software system are detailed here. The computer program was written in FORTRAN. One module which generates resource location data required the use of SAS?.

AS part of a research project sponsored by the Signal Corps Engineering Laboratories, which had the objective of obtaining a magnet wire of good conductivity and low temperature coefficient of resistance, a comprehensive literature survey, supplemented by experimental work, revealed that a linear relationship exists for solid-solution alloys between the electrical conductivity, K, and the temperature coefficient, a, as expressed by the equation: k = a/ß where ß is constant for the solvent metal and a - per°C. tR0 It has long been known that the electrical conductivity at a given temperature and the temperature coefficient of resistance of binary alloys are related to their constitution by the LeChatelier-Guertler rules, as illustrated by Figs. 1 and 2: Rule 1—In alloy systems consisting of a heterogeneous mixture of two phases, the electrical conductivity and temperature coefficient vary as a straight line, if the composition of the alloys is given in volume percentage, Fig. 1. Rule 2—In solid solutions, the electrical conductivity and temperature coefficient are always lower than those of the solvent metal, and usually a considerable decrease occurs with the first small percentage additions of the solute metal, Fig. 2b. If the two components form a continuous series of solid solutions, the electrical conductivity and temperature coefficient curves take the form of a U-curve, Fig. 2a. That some kind of proportionality exists between electrical conductivity and temperature coefficient of resistance is implied by the LeChatelier-Guertler rules and by study of data such as those given by Smith and Palmer,' Fig. 3. Dellinger2 in 1910 first recognized this relationship in a number of commercial copper wires, ranging in conductivity from 94 to 100.7 pct I.A.C.S. He gave the ratio of temperature coefficient to the percentage of conductivity as a constant, C = 0.003939. A year later, Lindeck observed that the linear relationship was valid for a wider range of conductivity in "various sorts of copper," and concluded that the product of resistivity and temperature coefficient was 6.78x10-5 1.5 pct. Since then, this relationship seems to have been entirely ignored. Conductivity-Temperature Coefficient Relationship If the electrical conductivity of copper solid-solution alloys with phosphorus, silicon, arsenic, antimony, aluminum, nickel, manganese, and iron is plotted against the temperature coefficient of these alloys, the diagrams in Figs. 4 and 5 are obtained. The study proposes the Ambidextrous Leadership-Technology Adoption (ALTA) model, which integrates leadership styles such as transformational, transactional, adaptive, and ambidextrous leadership into the technology adoption process. The model emphasizes the balance between exploration (fostering innovation) and exploitation (ensuring operational efficiency). The findings suggest that transformational leadership fosters innovation by encouraging risk-taking and creativity, while transactional leadership ensures efficient technology integration. The article also identifies key barriers to technology adoption, such as organizational resistance to change, which can be mitigated through adaptive leadership that addresses employee concerns. "Introduction.The theory of fractional ""education"" of oil from oil shale has been used by several inventors as the basis for the design of retorts for the production of oil from the oil shales of the United States. The term fractional ""education"" gives expression to the rather common belief that when an oil shales is heated it produces light, low-boiling oils as low temperatures, and increasingly heavier, higher-boiling oils as the temperature of retort¬ing rises. The theory evidently had its origin in the fact that crude petroleum may be fractionally distilled, yielding light oils at low distillation temperatures, and heavier oils as the distillation temperature increases is as, gasoline is produced from petroleum at relatively low temperatures, kerosene at higher temperature, and heavier products such as gas-oil and lubricating distillation at still higher temperatures.The writers have examined several oil-shale retorts designed to take advantage of the belief that crude, and in some cases refined, gasoline can be recovered from the shale at low temperatures; kerosene at higher temperat.res, and so on. Such retorts are usually designed to operate continuously and have several vapor-pipes lending from them at differing intervals and passing to separate condensers. Designers of such retorts repeat that the distillate from the low-temperature parts of the retort will be gasoline, and that as the shale passes to zones of increasingly higher temperatures, the vapor lines lending from these zones rill remove increasingly heavier products such as kerosene, gas-oil etc."

The torsion effusion method has been used to measure the vapor pressure of thallium over pure thallium in the temperature range 931" to 996'k The resulting 100 cal per g-atom is in excellent agreement with previous values. Vapor pressures of T1 above seven Ag-Tl alloys ranging from 33 to 90 at. pct T1 were measured at 979K. Calculated silver activities show a positive deviation from Raoult's law, approaching ideality near the liquidus. Measured thallium activities scatter less than previous measurements using the electromotive force technique. Values for the silver component were calculated by Gibbs-Duhem integration. This paper reports the results of a study of the liquid Ag-T1 system by the torsion effusion method. The method has been discussed in detail previously1 and will be only briefly summarized here. The sample is contained in a cell which is suspended on a torsion wire. Vapors effusing from orifices on opposite sides of the cell exert a torque on the wire. The torque is related to the vapor pressure by the following relation: where D is the torsion constant of the wire, 4 the angle of torque, fl and f2 the correction factors determined by Freeman and seamy2 to account for orifice length, a1 and a2 the areas of the orifices, and ql and q2 the distances of the orifices from the axis of rotation. By using the same cell for pure thallium and the alloy, it follows that: so that most systematic errors are eliminated in determining the activities. EXPERIMENTAL 99.999+ pct T1 was obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. and 99.999 pct Ag was obtained from Cominco American, Inc. Seven Ag-T1 alloys, ranging in composition from x^\ = 0.33 to 0.90, were prepared by melting together weighed amounts of the pure metals in sealed, evacuated Vycor tubes and quenching the melts in water. The apparatus and graphite cells were the same as those used by Hawkins and Hultgren3 in their study of the Pb-Sn system. RESULTS Ten measurements were made on pure thallium in the temperature range 931" to 996K, and the results are presented in Table I. Values of were calculated using tabulated Gibbs (free) energy functions.4 No dependence of on temperature or orifice size was found, indicating that equilibrium was attained. Data for the Ag-T1 alloys are shown in Table 11. Values were smoothed with respect to composition by a plot of where . DISCUSSION The value = 43,520 * 100 cal per g-atom for pure thallium (95 pct uncertainty limit) is in excellent agreement with previous investigations.4 In the Ag-T1 system, this study shows positive deviations from Raoult's law at all compositions. Fig. l gives the phase diagram according to Hansen, and Fig. 2 presents the activity values measured in this study as well as those from electromotive force measurements at 950°K by Terpilowski, Kundys, and slaby.'

ON Oct. 5, 1926, the day before the general ses-sions of the fall meeting of the American Insti-tute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at Pittsburgh, a round table conference on the combus-tibility and testing of coke was held at the Bureau of Mines Experiment Station. There were about fifty present, with A. C. Fieldner, chief chemist of the Bureau of Mines, as chairman. The following organi-zations were represented: American Institute of Min-ing and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society for Testing Materials, American Gas Association, Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association, Gas and Fuel Division of, American Chemical Society, and Southern Ohio Pig Iron and Coke Association. In opening the proceedings, Mr. Fieldner explained that the meeting had been called at the suggestion of several members of the Institute and members of other organizations. The subject is of interest to the pro-ducer and the user of coke whether it be in a blast furnace, cupola furnace, house-heating furnace, open grate, gas producer, or in a water-gas generator. There has been much confusion on this subject largely because there is no common definition of combustibility. Does the blast-furnace superintendent, the coke-oven operator, and the fuel engineer have the same under-standing of the term "combustibility"? If a common understanding can be reached, many differences of opinion will disappear. COMBUSTIBILITY OF COKE R. H. Sweetser of Columbus, Ohio, disagreed with the statement of P. H. Royster, T. L. Joseph, and S. P. Kinney in Reports of Investigations, Serial No. 2524, of the Bureau of Mines, in which it was stated that the coke-oven op-erator cannot change coke combustibility by modifying oven practice. Mr. Sweetser held that the coke-oven man can change the combustibility of coke. Blast-furnace men know that coke that will burn easily with low pressure and will. come down in the regular way in the furnace can be pro-duced from a given mixture of coal. His idea of the combustibility of coke is the rate of flow through the com-bustion zone of the blast furnace. If the coke does not pass through in normal manner it is highly incombustible. H. J. Rose of the Koppers Co., Pittsburgh, objected to being pinned down so closely on this phase of the com-bustibility and incombustibility of coke. Coke-oven men are frequently obliged to change oven conditions to make a coke which gives blast-furnace men what they want. The size of the coke and the screening have an important bear-ing on combustibility, and there are many cases on record where by simply changing the different sizes of the coke, everything worked smoothly, and that is a much more combustible coke.

Significant movement to an existing slurry wall which serves as a retaining wall on 'O' Street in Southeast Washington, D.C. initiated the Department of Public Works for the District of Columbia to invite specialty contractors to propose a rehabilitation and stabilization for the failed slurry wall. Nicholson Construction Company proposed and was awarded a contract for the construction of an anchored precast lagging and soldier pile wall to be located approximately 4 feet in front of the existing structure with granular fill placed between the new and existing walls. Stabilization of the existing slurry wall also included drilling horizontal weep holes and demolishing the failed panels down to the existing ground surface. A new and improved drainage system was also constructed to increase the amount of water directed toward the existing storm sewer system running along 'O' Street. This paper provides a detailed account of these construction activities.

The great variability of mineral and energy prices has motivated some governments to incorporate a windfall profits tax into their mineral taxation regimes. Windfall profits taxes are a means for governments to capture additional mineral revenue when mineral prices are considered higher than some historic level. Governments need to be aware of the effects of such contingent taxes on the exploration, development and operating decisions of mining companies. Mining companies need to be able to calculate the full impact of windfall profits taxes on the economics of their projects. This paper examines the valuation of a multi-phase copper-gold project in the presence of a windfall profits tax. Real options Monte Carlo simulation is used to characterise the different exposures of the mine owner and of the government to the risky cash flow streams that they receive from the project. The results highlight that Monte Carlo simulation paired with the real option valuation method is able to account appropriately for the differing risk exposures, while the traditional discounted cash flow valuation model is not. Our key conclusion for governments and mining companies is that the impact of contingent tax and royalty terms can and should be assessed using advanced valuation techniques, and the results used to improve contract designs under the constraint of actual and perceived fiscal system stability.

May I, at the very outset of this second gathering, congratulate the Institute on the great progress that has been made in the interval. At the first meeting in New Zealand in the year 1903, I understand that less than 20 persons were present, and now in the large concourse before me I believe there are not fewer than 140 persons, while if every member of the Institute to-day where here there would be over 500 with usagreat change from a membership of only 250 in 1903. I feel deeply appreciative of the honour you have conferred upon me by electing me your President for the year 1911. "In the autumn of 1977 Bethlehem management initiated feasibility studies on recovery of by-product molybdenum from concentrate produced at the existing Highland Valley mining operation. Over the fall and winter months test work was carried forward concurrent with design, flowsheet, equipment specification and cost studies. The decision was made to go ahead with a 200 ton-per-day treatment plant. Construction started in early 1978 and progressed to an initial start-up stage in mid-June. Full operational status was reached in August 1978. Operational results through August 1979 are presented. INTRODUCTIONBethlehem Copper Corporation operates a 20,000 ton-per-day Open Pit Mine and Flotation Plant located in the Highland Valley, some 30 air miles Southwest of Kamloops and 20 miles Southeast of Ashcroft, B.C.Two open pits are worked; the Iona Pit with limited reserves of higher Mo content, and the lower grade, more extensive Jersey Pit. Upwards of 150 tons per day of bornite-chalcopyrite bulk concentrate is produced, ranging 0.25% to 1.5% in molybdenum grade depending on the area mined."

"Removal of silicates and carbonates from sedimentary phosphate ores by the use of new synthetic collector/formulations was investigated in a comparative study with traditionally used collector systems as references. In the direct carbonate flotation the new formulations showed higher efficiency, contributed to an improved balance of P2O5 recovery and P2O5 enrichment in the recovered material. Efficiency of the new formulations containing synthetic surfactants was 1.5–2 times better than potassium salt of fatty acid sulfonate based formulations that are traditionally used for that purpose. The new formulations also provided up to 7% increase in P2O5 recovery at the same P2O5 grade. The new synthetic collectors for removal of silicates showed extremely good selectivity towards silica bearing minerals. The selectivity factor for the flotation tests when new formulations were used was 32–52 and for the flotation tests with the traditional collectors: 20–32. The ratio between distribution of an amount of silicates (as SiO2) and distribution of phosphate in the froth (waste) is defined as the selectivity factor. The new formulations provided more than 2% decrease of the amount of SiO2 at the same P2O5 recovery.INTRODUCTIONPopulation growth and decrease of arable land are the main reasons for constant increase of consumption of apatite (phosphate ore) in the fertilization field (Lannefors, Gorochovceva, Klingberg, Lima, & Gustafsson, 2015). Fertilizers play a key role for farmers to produce more with less land. The phosphate component of the fertilizer is vital for producing healthy and large amount of crop. As a result the demand for phosphate rock is growing.The largest producers of phosphate rock are the Unites States, Morocco, Tunisia, China, Russia, and Brazil. The term “phosphate ore” includes all phosphate-bearing minerals and rocks, but only two of them are of industrial interest: apatite (igneous origin) and sedimentary phosphate (Peres, Araujo, El-Shall, Zhang, & Abdel-Khalek, 2007). The majority of the world’s phosphate deposits are of the sedimentary type. There are two different types of sedimentary phosphates: siliceous and carbonaceous which are categorized based on gangue minerals (such as quartz, carbonates, mica, and clay)."

We present experimental results for the liquidus in the system Cu2O - CaO -Al2O3 at 1250 oC. In this study, we quantified the liquidus by the equilibration/quench/analysis technique, with Cu2O, Al2O3, and CaO as primary materials exclusively. Experiments were conducted in air at an at oxygen pressure (p) = 21.3 kPa). Equilibrated specimens were quenched in brine solution of 10 wt% NaCl. We then quantified the liquid chemical compositions by means of Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and Electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA). This study reveals inconsistences in liquidus surface of the present ternary diagram of the system here in mentioned. Differences of up to 10 wt % compositions of the species have been observed.
