Titanium can exist in three different oxidation states. Its oxides are numerous and in presence of iron and oxygen, iron-titanium oxide compounds can also form. Some of the oxides are non-stoichiometric, making the determination of the thermodynamic properties of titanium and its oxides in molten steel and in slag difficult. Therefore, for the assessment of titanium activity in molten steel using the electrochemical measurements of oxygen partial pressure, the identification of oxides in equilibrium with titanium is important. This paper reports on an investigation of solid titanium oxide inclusions, which have been identified by combining different methods of analysis on quenched samples. These samples were taken from a Fe-Ti-melt at 1600°C, quenched in cold water then mounted and polished for optical microscopy. The oxide inclusions were analysed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Both single crystal and polycrystalline diffraction patterns were used to identify the oxides by comparing the d spacings with those in the ICDD X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) database. XRD was used to analyse the oxide particles on the top of slow cooled samples. It was found in the TEM study that the similarity of the diffraction patterns of the various phases meant that unique identification was difficult to achieve in some of the diffraction patterns. However, TiO, Ti2O3, Ti3O5, Ti4O7were identified in quenched samples, while TiO2, FeO.TiO2and iron oxides were seen in slow cooled samples. Behaviors and evolutions of MgO·Al2O3 in non-oriented silicon steel during calcium treatment were investigated by thermodynamic calculations and high-temperature experiments. MgO·Al2O3 inclusions were the main type of inclusions before calcium treatment, which is also confirmed by the stability diagram of MgO/MgO·Al2O3/Al2O3 from thermodynamic calculations. After calcium treatment, the majority of original MgO·Al2O3 inclusions were mainly modified to CaO-MgO-Al2O3 system inclusions, this would be beneficial to improve castability and product quality of silicon steel. But there was no modification happening to some MgO·Al2O3 spinels which were directly surrounded by CaS inclusions. The content of Al2O3 occasionally existed a sudden increase besides a common decrease in the product layer of CaO·MgO·Al2O3. Then the evolution mechanisms of MgO·Al2O3 inclusions were proposed in present work. Thus, Al/Mg atom ratio had a significant influence on the modification of MgO·Al2O3 spinel.

O presente trabalho faz parte de um amplo programa de pesquisas que envolvem o desenvolvimento de procedimentos de soldagem para componentes de sistemas de ancoragem de plataformas de petróleo. Particularmente, realiza-se um estudo das propriedades mecânicas de um metal de solda de alta resistência obtido pelo processo de soldagem GMAW para atendimento dos requisitos necessários para a soldagem de aços da classe IACS W22 Grau R4. Foram soldadas juntas multipasses pelo processo GMAW, com preaquecimento de 150°C, corrente contínua, posição plana e aporte térmico médio de 1,0 kJ/mm. Após a soldagem, realizaram-se ensaios mecânicos e metalográficos em corpos-de-prova retirados integralmente do metal de solda depositado, tanto na condição de como soldado quanto após tratamento térmico pós-soldagem a 600°C por 1 hora. Os resultados mostraram que foi possível obter propriedades mecânicas que atendem os requisitos de aços da classe Grau R4 em todas as condições analisadas. Adicionalmente, verificou-se que o tratamento térmico pós-soldagem propiciou uma melhoria na tenacidade ao impacto devido ao revenimento da microestrutura do metal de solda.

O presente estudo objetivou avaliar as diferenças no processo de flotação entre as frações -0,150 +0,038 mm e -0,038 mm, bem como a redução de custo no processo de flotação. Verificou-se que as frações apresentam resultados bem distintos em recuperação mássica, recuperação metalúrgica, seletividade, razão de enriquecimento e teor de sílica no concentrado, condições ideais de adição de reagentes e qualidade final de concentrado e rejeito entre as frações e também se comparada a ao experimento controle, composto com a mesma amostra sem ser fracionada. Através dos testes executados segundo o planejamento fatorial, foram estabelecidos os pares de variáveis ótimas para a flotação para cada fração distinta e as possíveis otimizações utilizando-se a ferramenta estatística. Os resultados obtidos dos testes de bancada apontaram que a amostra composta e as frações separadas apresentam comportamentos distintos quanto às variações dos fatores dosagem de amina, dosagem de amido e pH de flotação e que os resultados do processo melhoram significativamente em relação ao processo sem o tratamento fracionado.

The coming years should see moderate growth in the US coal industry. That growth may come at the expense of the oil and natural gas industries. Conoco pegs coal growth at 2% a year, until the year 2000. During that same period, Conoco projects only 0.5% annual oil growth and "a flat or negative trendline" for natural gas. This is compounded by the fact that coal has a delivered cost per Btu that is only half as much as it is for natural gas and only a third as much as it is for oil. So said Ralph Bailey to many of the 2600 attending the opening session of the American Mining Congress Coal Convention, May 12-15, in Pittsburgh, PA. Bailey is chairman of the AMC. He is also chairman of Conoco. While coal's projected growth is not spectacular, "it is in fact almost an assured growth," Bailey said. Weak oil and gas prices will likely prevent faster growth for US coal. Most of coal's increased demand will come from the electric utility industry and expanded steam coal exports. Conoco's study projects that domestic coal demand will be strengthened in the 1990s. By then, the present surge of nuclear power plant constuction will be over. And there will be a lack of acceptably priced, large-scale generation alternatives for utilities. "It is not likely that any electric utility is going to be ordering new nuclear reactors," Bailey said. "And as oil and gas supplies become scarcer and more costly, it is only logical that coal is going to fill the gap." At the same time, Bailey believes the US coal industry must find ways to lower its costs. He said cost excesses can be found in "regulatory overkill, labor, and simply bad habits" hidden by years of high inflation. "Those costs have now been laid bare, because we are going through a pe¬riod of disinflation. We have to put our house in order, particularly if we are going to compete in world markets." Bailey also touched on coal research. "The industry certainly accepts the fact that we must find a way to burn coal as cleanly as possible. A lot of work in that regard is going on. I expect there will be some significant break-throughs." Bailey said the coal industry is being squeezed this year. Last year, coal customers accumulated inventories in anticipation of a major coal strike that never materialized. Now, many utility customers are working down these inventories. So they are not taking deliveries on their coal contracts. But coal use is up in 1985, compared with 1984, Bailey said. So increased coal use, along with supply drawdown, should strengthen the coal market before the year is out, he said. After Bailey's presentation, some 100 speakers addressed policy and technical topics at 15 sessions during the four-day meeting. It was the first time since 1977 that the AMC Coal Convention has been held in Pittsburgh. And this year's attendance was up 40% from the last AMC Coal Convention held two years ago in St. Louis, MO. This year's registrants included 228 companies, 225 manufacturers, and 106 associated members. The only negative was the David Lawrence Convention Center. It was less than ideal. By turns, meeting rooms were too small, too cramped, or too far from one another. The session on longwall mining was so crowded that the doors were propped open so conference delegates could peer in. A concurrent manufacturers' forum session needed 50 more chairs to accommodate those wanting to attend. However, on to summaries of some of the presentations. Coal transportation and export Since Congress approved the 1980 Staggers Rail Act, railroad rates for hauling coal have not been excessive. In fact, rail rates for coal have increased less than 0.5% a year, in real terms, since 1980. Moreover, the market oriented principles written into Staggers are contributing to the improved financial and operational health of the nation's railroads. But no railroad is earning excessive profits. That is the gist of a coal transportation study being completed by the US Department of Energy. William Vaughan is DOE's assistant secretary for fossil energy. He affirmed the thrust of the upcoming report. Vaughan did allow that Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) regulations on rate reasonableness could permit the railroads to exploit their monopoly power on captive shippers. At present, the Codelco Norte smelter processes in the Teniente Converter and the Flash smelting Furnace 1,420,000 t/y of its Chuquicamata concentrate with an arsenic content of up to 1.5%. In a near future Codelco-Chile is considering different processing options for a new projected concentrates from the Alejandro Hales mine (former Mansa Mina mine with an arsenic content of up to 6%). The main option is the possibility to process 3,000 t/d of mixing concentrates from the Alejandro Hales and the Chuquicamata mines, in the Teniente Converter. The main feature of this smelting unit will be high volatilization of arsenic when processing high arsenic-bearing concentrates. The CN smelter staff carried out a technical feasibility study to evaluate the processing of high arsenic-bearing concentrates directly in the Teniente Converter, thus the low arsenic-bearing concentrates can be processed in the FSF. Accordingly, laboratory scale tests were carried out at the Tohoku University facilities. The lab-scale results allowed an industrial scale test at the Codelco Norte smelter to smelt 2,300 tpd of high arsenic-bearing concentrates in the TC and evaluate the metallurgical impact in the smelting, converting and refining areas of the smelter. The main industrial-scale result confirmed the stabilization of the arsenic content at 0.5% in the 70% Cu produced white metal at the test condition.

Juntas soldadas por centelhamento (flash butt welding) de trilhos de aço do tipo intermediário foram caracterizadas mecânica e estruturalmente. Além disso, ensaios preliminares de dilatometria foram aplicados ao metal base e correlacionados ao processo de soldagem. Os resultados indicam que o metal base atendeu aos requisitos da Norma AREMA (2013). A microestrutura de toda a região soldada é formada por perlita e os ciclos termomecânicos provocaram significativas alterações no tamanho das colônias perlíticas e na sua morfologia, com destaque às mudanças de espaçamento interlamelar em toda a junta e início de esferoidização na região de transformação parcial. Como consequência das alterações morfológicas da perlita, a microdureza foi significativamente reduzida na região de transformação parcial e refino de grãos. A taxa de resfriamento média após o processo de soldagem foi estimada a partir dos ensaios de dilatometria.

"The adsorption of dehydroabietylamine acetate on quartz, hematite, rutile and baddeleyite has been deter-mined for concentrations ranging from 0.3 to 5,600 µ. moles/I and for pH values ranging from 2.5 to 10.5.The surface tension, UV and IR spectra, equivalent conductance and ion concentrations for dehydroabiety lamine acetate solutions have been determined.Contact-angle and flotability studies have established that good collection may be obtained with this amine but that selectivity depends on the suitable use of depressants for some of the minerals."

Os aços inoxidáveis martensíticos, em geral, aliam boas propriedades mecânicas e satisfatória resistência à corrosão, características associadas à possibilidade de realização de tratamentos térmicos de têmpera e revenimento. Nesse contexto, no presente trabalho foram avaliados os efeitos das condições desses tratamentos na microestrutura e nas propriedades mecânicas de um aço inoxidável martensítico de médio teor de carbono. Foram consideradas três temperaturas de aquecimento na têmpera e seis temperaturas de revenimento. A avaliação microestrutural foi realizada por meio de microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. As propriedades mecânicas foram avaliadas por meio de ensaios de dureza. Foi observada a elevação na dureza do aço com o aumento da temperatura de aquecimento na têmpera, assim como a dissolução dos carbonetos presentes no material. No revenimento subsequente observou-se o aparecimento do pico de dureza referente ao endurecimento secundário a uma temperatura de 500°C.

The Fairbanks Mining District in central Alaska was discovered in 1902 and since then approximately 7.5 million troy oz of placer gold, 250,000 troy oz of lode gold, and several thousand short tons of antimony and tungsten hap been produced from an area of about 1000 km . Historic lode production was from high grade gold-quartz veins that averaged 1.3 OPT free milling gold. Five main types of mineral deposits' are recognized in the district. I. Conformable, stratabound volcanogenic zinc, antimony, lead, and copper sulfides in places containing gold, silver and tungsten in bimodal metavoleanics (Cleary Sequence). II. Complex precious metal-bearing lead sulfosalt-quartz veins in Cretaceous granitic intrusives. III. Tungsten skarns adjacent to granitic intrusives. IV. Gold-bearing polymetallic sulfide-quartz veins crosscutting metavolcanics and metasedimentary units of the Cleary Sequence. V. Antimony-bearing gash veins along axial plane shears in various lithologies of the Cleary Sequence. Type I and Type IV mineral occurrences are currently being evaluated as low. grade bulk tonnage (target model 16-20 'million tons of 0.05 to 0.15 OPT)'and high grade moderate tonnage (target model 0.5 to 2.5 million tons of 0.5 OPT) gold deposits. The host rocks for Type I mineralization occur over a 30 km strike length and are at least 300 meters thick. As a result of the consumption and the rising cost of raw materials for ironmaking, steel producers have increased their utilization of low-cost, low-grade raw materials such as high alumina iron ore. The effect of Al2O3 and the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio on the viscosity, surface tension and sulfide capacity of the CaO–SiO2–Al2O3–MgO–TiO2 blast furnace slag system were studied in the present work. At a fixed CaO/SiO2 ratio of 1.20, 9 mass pct MgO, and 1 mass pct TiO2, the viscosity increases with an increase in Al2O3 content at a range of 16–24 mass pct, and decreases when the Al2O3 is higher than 24 mass pct. Increasing Al2O3/SiO2 from 0.47 to 0.92 causes a slight decrease in viscosity of the slags and has an opposite effect when Al 2O3/SiO2 is more than 0.92. The surface tension increases with increasing Al2O3 content at a fixed Al2O3 content and Al2O3/SiO2 at a fixed CaO content. The desulfurizing capacity decreases with increasing of Al2O3 content, while increases with increasing Al2O3/SiO2 at a fixed CaO content.

Em uma usina de processamento mineral podem existir dezenas de controladores que alteram automaticamente variáveis como taxa de minério, vazão de polpa, nível de caixa, quantidade de insumos, etc. Esses controladores existem para manter o processo em seu estado mais produtivo com o mínimo de ação humana. Para que este sistema de controladores funcione adequadamente, é preciso que estes sejam avaliados e sintonizados periodicamente. Devido à grande quantidade de controladores, diversos métodos de avaliação e inúmeras técnicas de sintonia, a tarefa pode se tornar extremamente complexa, confusa e longa. Por esta razão, nesse trabalho é proposta a aplicação da abordagem Seis Sigma DMAIC para gerenciar de forma eficiente e concisa as atividades de avaliação e sintonia de controladores industriais. A aplicação foi realizada na SAMARCO Mineração S.A. em Mariana/MG e os resultados comprovam a importância da abordagem proposta.

O refino de grão da estrutura bruta de solidificação da liga Cu-30%Zn (latão 70/30) a partir de adições de P e Zr ao banho líquido foi investigado utilizando-se microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica e microanálises. Foram conduzidas medidas de tamanho médio de grão pelos métodos planimétrico e do intercepto linear e foram realizadas microanálises por espectroscopia de dispersão de energia (EDS) e de comprimento de onda (WDS). Nas amostras obtidas observa-se que, quando são adicionados P e Zr, sempre ocorre a diminuição do tamanho médio de grão em relação àquele das amostras onde apenas P é adicionado. O menor tamanho médio (? 200 ?m) ocorre para um teor de 0,16% de Zr. O refino de grão coincide com a formação de precipitados geralmente facetados, contendo Zr e P em uma proporção equivalente à da fase ZrP. Sugere-se que as adições causaram a formação de partículas sólidas de ZrP, sobre as quais ocorreu a nucleação heterogênea de grãos da fase Cu-?, resultando no refino de grão.

A família de aços avançados de alta resistência – AHSS contempla uma variedade de materiais que são utilizados principalmente na indústria automotiva. Os aços bifásicos incluem-se nesta classe e são assim denominados devido a sua microestrutura composta por ferrita e martensita. Apresentam alta resistência mecânica associada à ductilidade, o que permite a aplicação de grandes esforços em pequenas áreas sem que ocorra fratura. Este trabalho visa verificar, através de caracterização metalográfica, ensaios de tração e anisotropia, as propriedades mecânicas do aço DP600 para trabalho a frio. A curva tensão-deformação de engenharia para este aço foi estabelecida através de ensaios de tração até a ruptura do corpo de prova. Foram obtidos valores médios de 330 MPa para o limite de escoamento, 589 MPa para o limite de resistência à tração e 20% de alongamento. Os índices de anisotropia também foram verificados através de ensaios de tração. Estes resultados foram comparados com valores encontrados na literatura. De um modo geral, as chapas ensaiadas resultaram em uma diferença de valores de aproximadamente 10%, possibilitando sua utilização a frio.

Os aços inoxidáveis duplex (AID), apresentam em geral uma microestrutura composta de austenita e ferrita em proporções aproximadamente iguais. Para ter o controle dos processos de fabricação e desempenho é importante conhecer sua evolução microestrutural, devido à precipitação de fases intermetálicas como sigma (s) e chi (?), que causam grave deterioração das propriedades mecânicas do material. Neste trabalho foi estudada a evolução da fase sigma (s) durante tratamentos térmicos em temperaturas intermetálicas (800°C-900°C) de amostras do aço inoxidável duplex tipo SAF2205 (DIN 1.4462/UNS 31803). Foi observada uma gradual redução da intensidade do sinal do ruído de Barkhausen com o aumento do tempo de tratamento térmico, indicando uma redução na fração de fase ferromagnética. Para tempos de tratamento de 24 horas, o sinal de Ruído de Barkhausen está quase totalmente inserido dentro do ruído de fundo da medida, indicando haver uma fração volumétrica bastante reduzida de ferrita. Por meio da produção de amostras padrão para calibração, essa pode ser uma via de avaliação não destrutiva de componentes submetidos em campo a temperaturas nas quais se formam fases intermetálicas.

Os precipitadores eletrostáticos são equipamentos responsáveis pelo despoeiramento dos gases de processo que atravessam o forno de grelha móvel. O processo de sinterização no forno gera uma grande quantidade de particulado que são retidos por estes equipamentos, portanto têm grande importância no processo da Samarco e para qualidade do ar nas comunidades do entorno. A eficiência dos precipitadores é monitorada através da emissão de particulado no topo das chaminés. Neste estudo foram analisados os fatores elétricos e dimensionais que afetam a eficiência de despoeiramento e, portanto, os mecanismos que recolhem as partículas. Foi também avaliado o balanço de massas do equipamento e a capacidade de coleta de particulado de cada campo do precipitador eletrostático. Desta forma foi realizada a otimização do tempo entre batimentos de placas e ajustes lógicos para a diminuição de entradas de ar falso no precipitador. As ações resultaram em aumento da eficiência do funcionamento do equipamento, com redução do baseline de emissão de particulado. Resultados adicionais foram identificados através da redução de manutenção de válvulas duplas, maior controle operacional.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a TTDF do aço ASTM A36 com diferentes graus de encruamento após ensaios de impacto Charpy, sob diversas metodologias. Não se notaram diferenças no comportamento do material quando se avaliam os valores de TTDF obtidos pela medição da expansão lateral dos corpos de prova, nem considerando o valor da TTDF na qual o material apresenta 50% de fratura frágil, usando as metodologias de avaliação visual das faces de fratura dos corpos de prova, embora os valores sejam divergentes dos valores obtidos pelos métodos analíticos. A avaliação das faces de fratura dos corpos de prova por microscopia eletrônica de varredura permitiu visualizar que nas regiões onde visualmente considerou-se que havia apenas fratura frágil, também haviam regiões típicas de fratura dúctil. Conclui-se que a metodologia mais indicada é aquela que considera a TTDF como a temperatura na qual a energia absorvida é a média dos patamares superior e inferior, pois é um método simples, de fácil reprodutibilidade e que melhor refletiu a tendência de comportamento do material nos diferentes graus de encruamento estudados.
