Introduction Since its creation in 1910, the Bureau of Mines has conducted a wide-ranging program of research on mining technology. Over the years, the Bureau has perhaps become best known for its accomplishments in mine health and safety technology, a field that has been the object of much public attention. Nevertheless, the Bureau's program in other areas of mining technology has always been strong and remains so today. A distinguishing feature of the current effort is its tendency to concentrate on high-risk, high-gain projects. Throughout the federal research establishment, the Administration's policy has been to phase out short-term research that could be performed by private industry, in favor of long-terms projects that industry cannot usually afford to fund. This tendency is evident in the following account of the highlights of the Bureau's current mining technology research program. Underground Mining Technology Fragmentation. Research studies on fragmentation have focused on nonexplosive concepts. If successfully developed, these concepts would lend themselves to continuous automated operation and reduce time and costs of fragmentation in underground mines. A special laboratory-scale device to investigate ripper cutting was designed and fabricated in 1982. Experiments were conducted with large drag cutters to develop an efficient cutting technique for hard rock. Tests were successfully conducted with 76- and 152-mm (3¬and 6-in.) bits in rocks up to 138-MPa (20,000-psi) compressive strength. Because of the success of these initial tests, larger-scale proof-of-concept tests are planned. To prepare for these tests, a tester capable of cutting a 1.8-m (6-ft) opening was fabricated. This device will allow ripper cutting to be carried out at full scale, and will also allow mucking and holddown requirements to be investigated. Preliminary estimates indicate that this concept has the potential to double excavation rates while reducing costs up to 30%. Mobile Hydraulic Monitor. A mobile hydraulic monitor system was designed, fabricated, and used to mine the St. Peter sandstone at an average rate of 22 t/h (25 stph) from a face in Martin-Marietta's foundry sand mine at Clayton, IA. A slurry transport system worked in tandem with jet cutting, resulting in a continuous mining and transport system. Problems with spray from the jet hitting the sandstone showed that a remote-controlled mobile monitor was needed at a station 15 m (50 ft) from the face, so the operator would have a clear view of the face and be safely out of the backwash. Crushers. Research on crushing systems to improve efficiency in underground mines is continuing. Final testing of a low-profile, portable crusher for underground applications has begun. A system for handling oversize feed to the crusher was conceived and tested. Underground crushing systems, portable enough to be kept near the face, offer considerable improvement in materials handling because main haulage by conveyor is often less costly. Hoists. Research to increase hoisting efficiency and speed and to reduce energy requirements has led to experimental ore skips. The skips feature guide rollers to improve riding characteristics, bearing improvement at critical locations, and weight savings of about 1.8 t (2 st). An experimental aluminum skip was installed last year at Kerr McGee's Church Rock mine. Performance is being monitored under production conditions. A portable service hoist for low-cost, efficient movement of men and supplies in raises between mine levels was designed, fabricated, and tested on the surface. A kinetic study of the hydrogen reduction of taconite from the Wisconsin Gogebic range was made over the temperature range from 500° to 1000°C on eleven size fractions from 4 to 150 mesh. Two stages of reduction were observed, a rapid initial reaction followed by a slower reaction presumably taking place at an internal receding FexO-Fe interface. Calculated mean activation energies for the two reactions were 7800 and 14,600 cal per mole respectively. In recent years there has been an increased interest in the direct reduction of iron oxide ores to metallic iron by means of gaseous reducing agents such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide.1,2 These investigations have been motivated by the desire to develop a process that will by-pass the blast furnace in the production of steel. The majority of these processes have been developed to produce metallic iron by direct reduction from high-grade iron oxide ores.3"5 Very little work has been done on the low-grade siliceous iron oxide ores.6"8 The work reported here is directed principally towards the fundamental aspect of the reduction reactions of siliceous iron oxide ores, since the practical aspects of the gaseous reductant process were discussed previously. The ore used in the investigation was obtained originally from the United States Bureau of Mines10 trench sample of the Yale member of the Wisconsin Gogebic range iron formation. The Yale taconite has an average analysis of 28.2 pct Fe and approximately 50 pct SiO2. Chemically, these nonmagnetic taconites contain on the average about 53 pct silica and 30 pct Fe. An average analysis calculated fron the USBM10 figures for a composite of the five members (Norrie, Plymouth, Pence, Pabst, and ale) of the iron formation is given in Table I. Mineralogically, based on previous X-ray diffraction and other studies, the principal minerals are hematite (Fe2O3), geothite (Fe2O3.H2O), and quartz (SiO2). Minor amounts of iron containing silicates, siderite (FeCO3) and magnetite (FeO. Fe2O3) are present.10,11 The iron minerals and the quartz are finely disseminated requiring extremely fine grinding for liberation. For the experimental work, the ore sample was screened into a number of size fractions, the analyses and densities of which are given in Table II. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The reduction experiments were carried out in a 24 in. by 2 in. ID nichrome-wound vertical-tube furnace mounted on a stand. A 1 1/2 in. OD zirconium-oxide combustion tube was used inside the furnace to contain the atmosphere. To the top of this combustion tube was joined a pyrex ground-glass joint to which was attached a glass bulb with a small (1.0 mm) opening at the center, and with two outlets controlled with a stopcock on each side. A pyrex-glass joint with connections to three stopcock joints for introducing hydrogen, nitrogen, and mixtures of hydrogen and nitrogen gas was joined to the tapered bottom of the combustion tube. The sized ore fractions were contained in a 1 in. diameter by 1 1/2 in. 150-mesh nickel screen basket. The basket was suspended in the furnace from a balance by means of a supporting nickel wire which hung freely inside the combustion tube. Essa tecnologia de simulação tem uma ampla aplicação no estudo de processos, o que permite a obtenção do seu conhecimento e domínio operacional. Além disso, possibilita melhores definições nas etapas de projeto, além de realizar uma análise de confiabilidade mais realista. O presente trabalho consiste em realizar uma análise de confiabilidade, através da simulação dinâmica, para entender como as paradas não-programadas influenciam a produção de uma planta de beneficiamento de ferro. Ainda, visa entender o desempenho fenomenológico dos equipamentos de acordo com a entrada de diferentes tipos de minérios e também como são suscetíveis a condições climáticas.

A fosfatização é um pré-tratamento superficial que tem como principais funções: a lubrificação, proteção contra corrosão e proteção contra abrasão. Os metais fosfatizantes mais comumente utilizados são o zinco, manganês e o ferro, sendo o zinco o mais aplicado nas indústrias siderúrgicas, automobilísticas e de linha branca. Atualmente, grande parte das pesquisas relacionadas aos processos de fosfatização é referente ao fosfato de zinco, sendo escasso o estudo sobre fosfato de manganês. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a cinética de formação da camada de fosfato de manganês em aços baixo carbono, analisando a influência do substrato na formação da camada fosfatizada. As análises foram baseadas na obtenção das curvas de ganho de massa, sendo caracterizadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os resultados indicaram que para o substrato constituído essencialmente de martensita revenida, uma maior quantidade de carbonetos resultou em uma menor taxa de ganho de massa, pois estes funcionam como sítios ativos no processo de fosfatização, fazendo com que exista uma maior densidade de núcleos.

No entanto esta capacidade não segue um roteiro, simples ou complexo, de tal forma a possibilitar respostas inovativas em alto nível e por toda a equipe da organização. Este trabalho propõe o ensino da metodologia TRIZ e de ferramentas auxiliares a todos os colaboradores das trefilarias. A TRIZ é uma metodologia sistemática, isto é baseado em regras, o que permite a obtenção de uma solução direcionada, portanto, muito mais assertiva no processo de inovação. A natural criatividade do profissional brasileiro pode ser amplificada com o aprendizado de uma metodologia que sistematize o desenvolvimento de novas soluções para antigos e novos problemas no processo de trefilação. O aprendizado das ferramentas básicas de TRIZ, associado a outras ferramentas, podem tornar os profissionais da área de trefilação mais confiantes e efetivos na análise de problemas, geração de ideias e prevenção de falhas.

In June of 2002 Hilti North America received the first MSHA permissible approval for usage of a powder actuated tool device in a gassy mine atmosphere. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the implementation of this commonly utilized tool technology in the construction industry, to the underground gassy mining industry over the course of the last 5 years. Prior to June of 2002, underground gassy mining industry had attached materials such as ventilation curtains, power cables, communication cables, signage, and other materials by either manually driving individual spads or nails into the mine roof or rib or by attachment to existing roof bolt bearing plates. The Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool is portable, durable, and lightweight (4.5 pounds). The Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool system is powered by Hilti .27 caliber permissible explosive boosters. The energy force of the Hilti .27 booster?s acts on a captive piston principle in the Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool, that applies the setting force for the direct fastening to the individual fastener chosen for the application by the end user. HAVING had some experience in the use of gasoline-gas in a laboratory, I have been induced by frequent inquiry to present a few hints concerning it, which I hope may be of some value to those who are out of the reach of coal-gas, and who contemplate using this gas. While I will not delay to describe the method by which this gas is made, it may not be out of place to note that, unless frequent charges are put into the carburetter, the gas is variable in richness. This may be partially avoided, it is said, by repeatedly pumping from one cell in the carburetter to another. If a machine is in constant use for many months without re charging, the gas becomes rather poor for illuminating purposes ; but in this condition it may be burned in a Bunsen burner with advan tage. Could the gas be used always in this condition, no difficulty would be experienced, and it would be quite satisfactory for general laboratory purposes. Considerable annoyance, however, is experi enced whenever the machine is filled with gasoline. The Bunsen and other burners then produce a flame too smoky to be used with com fort, and, in fact, with most of them, a full supply of air; turned on at the base of the burner, will not suffice to completely burn off all the carbon. Finding it necessary to adopt some method by which I could get a flame free from unconsumed carbon, I adopted a plan which has in every way proved satisfactory. In addition to the pipe conveying the gas to the table, and ar ranged with a stopcock, there is brought to the table, within a fern inches of the gas-pipe, another pipe, conveying air direct from the pump. This pipe is also arranged with a stop-cock. The air- and gas-pipes are now connected with one pipe by a T joint; and to this last pipe is attached, by rubber tubing, the Bunsen or other burner. I have successfully used this simple system in connection with both small and large Bunsen burners, a burner with three tubes, arid a Fletcher burner; and recently I have added a new still to our equipment, and have been tising with it a Fletcher special high power burner No. 6, to which this system has been applied. "One kind of tailings from gravity separation of polymetallic mine contains 0.5–0.8% SnO2. The proportion of –0.037 mm size fraction of the tailings is 37.12%, and the distribution rate of SnO2 is 60.32% in it. For this tailings, two processing technology was carried out. One was felt-shaking table gravity separation in which the concentrate with a grade of 30% SnO2 at a recovery of 10% was obtained. Another was flotation-gravity separation in which the concentrate with a grade of 51.20% SnO2 at a recovery of 51.69% was obtained, but the dosage of collectors was as much as 990g/t. Therefore, the experimental research on the influence of grain size composition on the cassiterite recovery were conducted. The results show that: (1) the flotation recovery of the cassiterite distributed in +0.043 mm size fraction is only 10%, flotation recovery is not suitable for it; (2) a portion of cassiterite distributed in –0.01+0.005 mm size fraction could be recovered by flotation, but the tin flotation performance will be worsened rapidly and the dosage of collectors will be increased due to the increase of the content of –0.010 mm size fraction; (3) flotation processing is not suitable for –0.005 mm size fraction of the tailings. According to the results, a new technology has been carried out, that is discarding tailings by gravity separation-hydrocyclone desliming-flotation-gravity separation processing flow. The processing index is close to that of the flotation-gravity separation processing flow, and the collector dosage is decreased to 360 g/t by this processing technology. And, it has been achieved that the cassiterite slime is recovered economically and reasonably.INTRODUCTIONAs the density of cassiterite is higher than that of gangue, gravity separation is considered to be a low cost, pollution free, and effective process for cassiterite recovery (Wills, 2009). However, cassiterite is a kind of fragile mineral, over crushing is easy to take place and a large amount of slime is inevitably produced in the crushing and grinding of cassiterite. For the cassiterite slime exists in –0.043 mm size fraction, the efficiency of gravity separation decreases sharply. The production practice shows that, for the fine cassiterite, the recovery of tin exists in –0.043 mm +0.010 mm size fraction is about 13% through shaking table gravity separation, and the tin exists in –0.010 mm size fraction is almost impossible to be recovered by gravity separation. If flotation is adopted to recover fine cassiterite, the problems of high reagent dosage, high cost, environmental pollution, and poor economic benefit would take place. Therefore, the recovery of cassiterite slime is a worldwide problem. A key way to increase the utilization of tin resource and increase the economic benefit of tin mines is developing suitable beneficiation process for fine cassiterite."

O aço inoxidável duplex (AID) representa uma classe importante de aços inoxidáveis, particularmente para aplicações que exigem alta resistência mecânica e à corrosão. Sendo assim, o estudo das propriedades eletroquímicas dos filmes passivos formados em AID tem sido uma contribuição importante para a compreensão do comportamento protetor contra a corrosão. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar o filme passivo formado no aço 2205 laminado a morno utilizando espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica, (EIE), em ambiente de íons de cloreto. Para esse propósito, as chapas como fornecidas de AID foram laminadas a morno a 600°C até 60% e 80% de redução na espessura e submetidas aos testes eletroquímicos. O estudo mostra que o tratamento termomecânico utilizado não favoreceu a formação do filme passivo nessas condições e levou a uma menor resistência à polarização. O AID 2205 como fornecido apresentou uma maior resistência à transferência de carga na comparação com as amostras laminadas a morno.

Este estudo trata da simulação numérica por elementos finitos de um conjunto de trilhos, talas e parafusos de fixação, com o objetivo de verificar as tensões que ocorrem no conjunto, devido às cargas solicitadas e aplicadas nas condições de apoios estabelecidas pela norma NBR MB 3076/1989, além de duas condições de aperto dos parafusos: pré-carga de 50% da tensão de escoamento e 90% da tensão de escoamento do parafuso. Os resultados mostraram que o efeito de aperto do parafuso é mais significativo na distribuição de tensões do conjunto do que o efeito da carga externa. O aperto do parafuso a 50 e 90% do escoamento provocou maiores valores de tensões de Von Mises distribuídas tanto no parafuso quanto na tala, ultrapassando o escoamento dos materiais. É recomendável considerar que os menores valores de torque podem facilitar o desaperto da porca na prática, devido às passagens da roda sobre o conjunto.

The Mt Todd Project is located 42 km northwest of Katherine in the Northern Territory. The identified mineral resource estimate for the Batman gold deposit is 66.7 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t). Proved and Probable Ore Reserves total 42.3 Mt grading 1.5 g/t. Orebody definition and reserve estimation is based on extensive percussion and diamond drilling. Exhaustive bias analysis comparing grades produced from different drilling techniques has been undertaken. Similarly, detailed check assaying programs have been run to validate grade data produced by commercial laboratories used during the exploratory drilling phase. Significant biases were established from both studies and appropriate 'corrections' were made to drillhole databases prior to final resource and reserve estimation. 3D geostatistical modelling has been utilised for resource and reserve estimation, with specialist consultants contracted for this work. Introduction Over the last five years, a large number of small- to medium-sized carbon-in-pulp treatment plants have been built in Australia, most designed to treat between 250,000 t/a and 1.5 Mt/a of ore. Because of the limited capital resources and tight cash-flow positions of these relatively small mining companies, the primary requirement was often to get a plant built and operating in a short period of time and at minimal capital cost. Therefore, since the inclusion of both pre-leach and tailings thickeners represents an obvious and significant capital cost, most of these plants were built without thickeners or even detailed, cost-benefit analyses on their inclusion. In some cases, the increasing use of High Rate Thickeners (HRTs) in the mineral processing industries has, however, resulted in a reassessment, because of their considerably lower cost. This reassessment was triggered primarily by the need to conserve water in arid mining areas where borefields are costly to install and water is limited. With the startup and operation of these installations, the resulting significant savings in cyanide consumption has been recognized, in many situations, as a primary justification for the installation of HRTs. Solution balances Degradation of cyanide occurs in the tailings water discharge to slime dams. The degree of degradation (cyanide loss) in the water recovered depends on a number of factors, but it is usually assumed to be about 90%. The most important mechanisms of CN loss are through HCN losses and oxidation by oxygen in the air, which also assists in the hydrolysis of CN. These mechanisms are supported by the large dam surface area and the long retention time of the tailings water in the dam. By thickening the CIP tailings at the plant and recovering as much tailings water as immediately possible, these losses are avoided. The retention time in an HRT is less than three hours, and the surface area is relatively small. Therefore, CN losses are negligible, which is not necessarily the case in conventionally-sized thickeners. Fig. I shows a block diagram of a 100-t/h gold plant without a thickener. In this example, 50% of the tailings water pumped to the tailings dam is recovered, and the CN concentration of the returned water is 10% of the tailings CN concentration of 150 ppm. Fig. 2 represents a plant with an HRT on tailings, thickening to 55% w/w solids. In this case, the thickened tailings are pumped to the dam, and 25% of the contained water is recovered. The recovered water and the mill make-up water are not sent directly to the mill; instead, they are added to the thickener feed and mixed with it prior to thickening. By doing this, the tailings are effectively washed, and the additional cyanide is recovered. Solution balances over these two circuits show cyanide recoveries of 5% and 65%, respectively. Thus, the thickener use increases cyanide recovery by 60%. Fig. 3 shows a two-stage HRT circuit in a countercurrent decantation (CCD) configuration. In this example, an additional 13% of cyanide is recovered through the use of the second-stage unit. This configuration can be justified when residual cyanide levels are high. "The direct reduced iron powder and Ti-V-rich material was prepared from vanadium titanomagnetite concentrate by solid-state reduction-magnetic separation. The result indicated that under the studied conditions, adding KS can effectively improve the metallization rate of pellets. 2% KS was well mixed with vanadium titanomagnetite concentrate to make the pellets. The green pellet was preheated at 900 ? for 6 min. The preheated pellet was reduced at 1050 ? for 100 min, then crushed and ground to more than 80% was below 0.045 mm. The direct reduced iron powder and Ti-V-rich material were separated from the slurry by wet magnetic separation at 800Gs. The TFe content of magnetic material was 90.63%, and the Fe recovery rate reached 96.53%. The TiO2 and V2O5 contents of Ti-V-rich material were 28.40 % and 1.64 %, respectively. The TiO2 and V2O5 recovery rates were 69.05% and 96.82%, respectively. 1. Introduction The ilmenite and rutile are the main titanium resources which can be used in the present technical level and economic conditions[1,2]. However, with the rapid development of China’s economy, the market demand of titanium products is increasing sharply. The current supply of ilmenite and rutile cannot meet the needs of chemical industry[3]. China is rich in vanadium titanomagnetite concentrate which contains abundant titanium and vanadium resources. The TiO2 and V2O5 content of vanadium titanomagnetite concentrate are usually about 7% and 0.3%, respectively[4]. Because the TiO2 and V2O5 grades are low, it generally requires pre-concentrated to Ti-V-rich material before extracting the titanium and vanadium. Therefore, it is vital to find effective processes for pre-concentrating the titanium and vanadium in vanadium titanomagnetite concentrate. There are many methods[5-13] developed or under development to pre-concentrate Ti-V-rich material from vanadium titanomagnetite concentrate, including the blast furnace process, pre-reduction electric furnace process, to utilized vanadium titanomagnetite concentrate are direct reduction-electric furnace smelting, sodium salt roasting-direct reduction-electric furnace smelting and direct reduction-magnetic separation and so on. The blast furnace process and other methods cannot effectively utilize the titanium and vanadium resource due to the technical or environmental problems[9]. In this study, the vanadium titanomagnetite concentrate was obtained from Panxi region of China, the reserves of which account for 11.6% of vanadium and 35.17% of titanium all over the world[3]. The preparation of direct reduced iron powder and Ti-V-rich material based on reduction-magnetic separation is proposed. The process utilizes a new catalyst for titanium ore reduction in rotary kiln followed by magnetic separation. Using this novel technology, the titanium-vanadium and iron are successfully separated. Compared to the traditional reduction of Ti-bearing ore, the reduction temperature reduced to 1050 ?, leading to higher efficiency, lower energy consumption and investment, and broader applications."

"Abstract - The Louvicourt Au-Ag-Cu-Zn-Pb sulfide deposit is hosted by a Middle Ordovician calc-alkaline sequence of aphyric rhyolite flows and associated fragmental rocks at the top of the Flat Landing Brook Formation. The Zr/TiO2 (average = 0.110) and Y/TiO2 (average = 0.021) ratios in the footwall felsic volcanic rocks are consistent with known values for the Reids Brook member. The deposit consists of two concordant lenses of semi-massive to massive sulfides, approximately 150 m long and up to 9 m thick, which represent a fold repetition of a single exhalative horizon. The deposit contains a geologic resource of 136 000 tonnes grading 1.2% Pb, 1.0% Zn, 0.4% Cu, 90.9 g/t Ag, and 0.96 g/t Au; the deposit locally contains elevated Au (2.9 ppm) and Ag (320 ppm) contents. A laterally continuous iron formation that contains barite caps the deposit, and is gradational vertically and laterally into laminated siltstone. The exhalite confirms the stratiform nature of this deposit, but a large percentage of sulfides occur as late replacements of altered felsic fragmental rocks in the footwall. Abundant examples of colloform pyrite and perlitic and spherulitic textures in volcanic clasts are well preserved. The base- and precious-metal content of the Louvicourt deposit is atypical of the Bathurst Mining Camp (BMC). Reported assay data (n = 27) indicate an average Pb/Zn ratio of 2.6, the highest in the BMC (average = 0.39). Lead exhibits a strong Spearman Rank correlation (r' = 0.92) with base metals throughout the sequence, indicating a preponderance of galena in both the stockwork and stratiform zones. The Ag and Au contents in this deposit are among the highest in the BMC and exhibit a Au-Ag- Cu-Pb association. Barite-rich exhalative pyrite exhibits a moderate Au correlation with Ag (r' = 0.77; n = 10) and Cu (r' = 0.76) and occurs in portions of the exhalative sulfides that are enriched in Pb. Chemical exhalative rocks are conformably overlain by trachy-andesitic volcaniclastic (possibly pyroclastic) rocks that are assigned to the Little River Formation. These are enriched in Nb (average = 38.4 ppm) and P2O5 (average = 0.17 wt.%), and have much lower Zr/TiO2 (average = 0.056) and Y/TiO2 (average = 0.0062) relative to rocks higher in the hanging wall. The intermediate volcanic rocks are conformably overlain by massive to pillowed basalt flows and related hyaloclastite that have Nb/Y = 0.60 and high TiO2 contents (average = 2.8 wt.%). This chemistry is consistent with rocks of the Brunswick Mines member (Little River Formation), except that these rocks are considerably enriched in P2O5 (average = 0.82 wt.%). This syngenetic exhalative deposit is unique for the BMC with a high Pb/Zn and elevated Au and Ag contents, as well as an epithermal signature (Sb-Ag-Au-Tl-Hg), analogous to high sulfidation volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Its intimate relationship with an emergent felsic dome (Flat Landing Brook Formation), chlorite-silicate-oxide-sulfide exhalite (locally hematitic), and the abundance of barite are classical features of many of the Kuroko deposits."

Thermodynamics of Ti, N and O in liquid iron was studied in order to establish a data base for the prediction of TiN and TiOx formation in liquid stainless steels containing various alloying elements including Cr, Ni and Si as a function of temperature. The interaction parameters of these elements on Ti and N were determined using the metal-nitride-gas equilibration technique. The TiN stability diagram for a commercial stainless steel grade was constructed from the measured thermodynamic parameters, and its validity was confirmed experimentally. The interaction parameters between Ti and O, and the equilibrium constants for Ti deoxidation reactions for the formation of Ti2O3 and Ti3O5 were also determined by the equilibration of the melts with those oxides identified by the XRD and the EPMA analyses.

I must tell you at the outset that I come to this conference deeply disturbed at the `role of Government in international dealings in mineral and energy resources'. I am disturbed by the confusion that now passes for policy. I am disturbed by the short- range view of critical problems taken by a majority of Governments. I am equally disturbed by the even shorter range of view taken by a growing army of industries. Many of them clamour for Governments to solve their problems in a specific way, with little regard for any other sector but their own-and with even less regard for the fact that every time a Government takes over some of their responsibilities they surrender some of their freedom. I would not say that longer range views don't exist. But I would say that they don't prevail at the present time. Instead, we are seeing the con- stant development of many policies for individual problems which don't tackle the fundamental causes. We must get back to basics without delay.

Vanadium is a transition metal, ductile, silver-gray metal. It is harder than most metals and steels and it has a good resistance to corrosion, it is stable against alkalis, sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. Vanadium is oxidized in air about 660 °C, although an oxide layer forms even at room temperature. The chemistry of vanadium is noteworthy for the accessibility of the four adjacent oxidation states 2-5. In aqueous solution the colors are lilac V2+, green V3+, blue VO2+ and, at high pH, yellow VO42-. Considered to be as abundant as zinc, metallic vanadium is not found in nature, but it is known to exist in about 65 different minerals. Economically significant examples include patronite (VS4), vanadinite (Pb5(VO4)3Cl), associated to the uranium mineral carnotite (K2(UO2)2(VO4)2?3H2O) and in a vanadium mica called, roscoelite K(V3+,Al,Mg)[(Si,Al)4O10](OH)2. Other important vanadium ore oxides are montroseite (V,Fe)O(OH) and corvusite (Na,Ca,K)V8O2.4H2O. Much of the world's vanadium mine production comes from magnetite-hosted deposit and to a lesser extent, in sedimentary-hosted sandstone. Vanadium is also present in bauxite and in fossil fuel deposits such as crude oil, coal, oil shale and tar sands. In crude oil, concentrations up to 1,200 ppm have been reported. A significant vanadium production comes from the processing of petroleum residues, fly ash and recycling spent catalysts. In 2011, metallurgical applications accounted for 93% of the use of vanadium. Here, an alloy called ferrovanadium is utilized to strengthen steel to be used as rebar in the construction industry, in the manufacturing of axles, crankshafts, gears and chassis in the automotive and transportation industries and in the manufacturing of high-speed tools. In the aerospace industry, vanadium is utilized as a titanium alloy in the manufacturing of airframes and jet engines. The reason for the wide use of vanadium as alloy is its high strength-to-weight ratio, the highest of any engineered material on earth. The major non-metallurgical use of vanadium is in the production of catalysts for the chemical industry. The most commercially important compound is vanadium pentoxide (V2O5), which is used as catalyst in the production of sulfuric acid.

A produção siderúrgica em usinas semi-integradas gera resíduos de processo, dentre os quais pó de aciaria elétrica (PAE). A presença de zinco e os custos crescentes para a disposição deste resíduo são fatores de motivação para sua reciclagem ou incorporação em outros materiais. Entretanto, fatores como o teor de zinco e as espécies minerais existentes, têm influência no processamento do PAE. Adicionalmente, a presença de outros elementos como o chumbo, cromo e o cloro muitas vezes afetam de modo determinante os processos de reciclagem ou aproveitamento. Neste estudo, após análise, são feitas considerações acerca da influência da composição do PAE em processos piro e hidrometalúrgicos de reciclagem. Complementando o trabalho, são feitas simulações sobre o possível comportamento de algumas espécies químicas do PAE em processos de reciclagem, com auxílio da ferramenta termodinâmica computacional FactSage.

Mining in Peru is mainly concentrated on metallic and polymetallic ores of gold, copper, lead, zinc, silver, tin, iron, etc. However, little has been done to develop extensive and rich non-metallic or Industrial Minerals deposits with the exception of some silica and phosphate deposits. This paper presents the characterization and metallurgical studies for the development of a feldspar deposit. These studies showed that the special characteristics of the ore, such as high porosity, high Al2O3 content, low clays content, and sized material allowed us to obtain commercial products applying relatively simple and low cost concentrating unit operations. The characterization studies showed that the feldspar products contained no quartz and about 90% of albite (NaAlSi3O8). The 14x40-mesh size fraction product analyzed 5.91% Na2O, 22.56% Al2O3, 65.73% SiO2, 0.65% K2O, 6.50% CaO, and 0.40% Fe2O3; whereas, the 40x150-mesh size fraction product analyzed 6.22% Na2O, 24.30% Al2O3, 60.80% SiO2, 0.91% K2O, 7.06% CaO, and 0.54% Fe2O3. These products could be used for manufacturing glass, ceramics, refractory, and filters in different applications. In addition, Middlings, could be used as insulation material due to its porosity (bulk density of 0.828 Kg/dm3), analyzing 4.46% Na2O, 15.7% Al2O3, 67.2% SiO2, 2.57% K2O, 3.94% CaO, and 4.24% Fe2O3. The material showed a sphericity of 0.77, a roundness of 0.68, and acid solubility of 13.3025% on only washed and 2.72% effective for clean material suitable for use in these applications. No selective accumulation of the valuable mineral was observed at any specific size fraction. However, iron and titanium bearing impurities trended to concentrate in fine fractions (minus 70 mesh -212 µm-). Metallurgical studies demonstrated that this feldspar ore required sizing at 14x40 mesh and 40x150 mesh to render commercial products. In the case of the 14x40-mesh size fraction, the process involved magnetic separation, gravity separation, and flotation for feldspar (direct flotation) using a blend of primary and condensate amines. However, the reverse flotation for mica-biotite and iron bearing minerals was also possible using petroleum sulfonate. The metallurgical process for the 40x150-mesh size fraction required magnetic separation and reverse flotation of iron and titanium bearing minerals, the feldspar being reported in the sink material. Commercial products from this feldspar deposit for glass, ceramics, refractory, and filtration; and for the manufacturing of insulation material were obtained.

Uma das maneiras mais eficientes de aumentar a campanha dos refratários de conversores é o uso de técnicas de slag splashing e slag coating. Nestes processos, antes de sua execução, a escória de fim de sopro é modificada pela adição de materiais contendo, principalmente, MgO. Escórias de conversor contendo alto teor de FeO tem, como fase de equilíbrio mais provável a magnesiowustita (MW). Este estudo visa determinar se, nos curtos tempos de processo em conversor, e sempre a temperaturas bastante inferiores ao ponto de fusão do MgO, ocorre a dissolução do MgO e a saturação da escória em MW ou se a escória se mantém fora de equilíbrio. Os resultados indicam que a MW é formada e, em muitos casos, sua composição pode ser prevista com razoável precisão através de cálculos de equilíbrio por termodinâmica computacional.
